so i know no one will ever believe me but when i started writing carve i was much less into current hockey & its players than i am now. steve is very very VERY loosely giving carey price vibes bc i have been a habs girl forever, but cross my heart hope to die i did not really know much about brad pre writing the fic.

as soon as the comparisons started rolling in & i learned more about current hockey players (and developed a highly uncomfy brad crush), i leaned right into this bc its soooo right. you’ll see brads influence more in the prequel, if you read that next 😏

This got quite a bit longer than five sentences! And I'm pretty sure you were aiming for war-style angst, but my brain went somewhere else entirely :)

His arm had gone numb again, at the worst possible time. Maedhros sighed and crouched down to put his nephew back on the ground. “Tyelpë, I’m sorry, but I can’t carry you further,” he said. The child looked up at him with wide eyes. “Does your arm hurt, Uncle Mae?” “Yes, a little. Here’s what we’re going to do. You’re going to hold onto my sleeve real tight, alright? We’re almost home.” Maedhros’s left hand was busy carrying their groceries, and his right shoulder was on fire. Even the slight pressure of Tyelpë’s hand gripping his sleeve was painful, but it was better than letting his nephew cross the street on his own. To his credit, Tyelpë was perfectly well-behaved for the three blocks it took to get home. “Are you okay?” he asked with adorable concern when Maedhros dropped the groceries onto the floor of the elevator and dug his hand into his shoulder muscles, his breath hitching with the pain. “Don’t worry about me,” Maedhros smiled at him. The elevator dinged, and the door opened. Tyelpë grabbed the grocery bag and tried to lift it, but it was far too heavy for him. He started dragging it behind him instead, making for Maedhros and Fingon’s flat. Maedhros laughed. “Thank you, Tyelpë, but I’ll take it. Go open the door, it should be unlocked. Get Finno for me, alright?” “Yes, Uncle Mae! Uncle Finno!” he yelled on the landing, already running to the door. Maedhros chuckled and picked up the bag, gritting his teeth against the pain. In seconds, Fingon was at his side, taking the groceries and slinging his arm around his waist. “Hey,” he murmured. “The shoulder again?” “Yes,” Maedhros gritted out. “‘t’s fine, I just need to rest it.” “Go lie down,” Fingon said, guiding him into their flat. “I’ll handle Tyelpë and the groceries.” “I’m the one who’s supposed to be babysitting.” “Tyelpë loves me. Besides, he can colour on the coffee table if you’re on the couch. That still counts.” Maedhros sat down, and caught Fingon’s arm before he could move away. “Thanks. You’re the best.” “Always,” Fingon smiled.

YES. I like the idea of it being carved with magic too, something akin to cattle branding. Just blinding burning pain as Joel's name is carved in gold on his foot. It hurts, it hurts so much.

Fuck. And he has to walk around, he can't just, stop everything in his life because of Joel being an asshole, so he continues running the town like that. Puts his boots on, and gets to work.

He can feel it. Every. step. he. takes. It hurts, it fucking burns, he can almost distinguish and feel every single letter. He can't keep Joel out of his mind, even if the mark is hidden away in such an innocuous place. He thinks about him all day long, for weeks. He belongs to Joel, and Joel made sure to remind him.

Its nowhere the filthiest thing I've ever written, ive ever thought about, but its gonna stay in my mind for so long. The sense of ownership Joel has over Jimmy. How uncaring and shitty it is from Joel to do a thing like that, obviously without asking permission. Jimmy's helplessness in the situation, he can't do anything about it, besides what? Waiting for it to heal, for the pain to stop? Put some cream on it? There's nothing he can do to make it stop. Or to erase it. The hidden possessiveness it carries, yeah Joel says its a joke, and Gods sure do make the most cruelest of jokes, but you think its just a bit? Or is it that Joel wants to own Jimmy? That he's actually jealous when Jimmy flirts with other people? He owns him now, it's his, Jimmy's got his name on him. What if, because of magic reasons it never stops hurting? Jimmy would be obliged to get used to it.

Even if it was made with just a knife, just imagine the process of it. Joel holding Jim down and carving his name on his foot. Jimmy absolutely fucking hated it.
