once katya became bedridden due to her illness, lydia was immediately called to her side. the worried mother wasted no time in rushing to her daughter, not bothering to change out of her travel frock before she tended to her.

after a thorough examination, lydia turned away and stared at her trembling hands, quiet sobs coming out of her mouth. lisette couldn't contain her worry any longer. "please, tell us the diagnosis, mrs. miotke", she asked with a quivering voice, holding back tears herself. lydia sighed deeply before speaking, as if her saying it out loud would make it true. "...it must be the epidemic going around", she finally said, her voice heavy with dread. "the symptoms are awfully similar." nathanael, also in the bedchamber, finally spoke up. "the spanish influenza...? are you sure?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"regrettably, i am quite certain, nathanael", lydia responded, her tone tinged with irritation as she fixed her gaze on her son-in-law. "based on most other cases, she will not have long." her words carried a piercing glare as she spoke. although nathanael couldn't know for sure, he couldn't help but guess what the concerned mother was asking him to do. he shuddered at the thought - seeing her, face to face - but knew it had to be done.

PWHL completed their draft! Full results are here

Corinne Schroeder signed a 2 year extension with PWHL New York

Lina Ljungblom (who was drafted in 2023 and played in the SDHL last year, winning SDHL league mvp) signs a three year deal with PWHL Montreal

Zoe Boyd and Natalie Snodgrass a one year extension with PWHL Ottawa, Aneta Tejralová signs a two year extension

Former Colgate University women’s hockey coach Greg Fargo is hired to coach PWHL New York

Natalie Darwitz is forced out of PWHL Minnesota, who will begin their GM search

Mélodie Daoust, Brittyn Fleming announced their retirement

PWHL Boston expected to stay at Tsongas next season

SDHL (Sweden)

Next years schedule has been released, with the season starting in September

Swedish national team defender Jessica Adolfsson signs with HV71. She was with Linköping last season

Forward Lisa Johansson signs with SDE HF. She was with Luleå last year

Italian defender Nadia Mattivi signs with Luleå. She spent the last several season with Boston University, where she was also captain

Finnish forward Ida Kuoppala signs with Skellefteå AIK. She spent the past few season with UMaine and was one of their top scorers

University of Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji state forward Reece Hunt signs with Luleå

SWHL/Postfinance Women League (Switzerland)

HC Ambrì-Piotta Girls sign two big names from Naisten Liiga. The first is Michaela Pejzlová, a star from Czechia who led Naisten Liiga in points, was a first team all star, and won her second championship. HIFK teammate Julia Liikala is the other player from Naisten Liiga joining, she was a second team all star for the league and played on Finland’s national team that won a gold medal

HC Ambrì-Piotta Girls also gets three players who played in the SWHL last year: the first is young Swiss goaltender Sofia Bernardasci, who’s played solid backup minutes the past two years on other teams. 23 year old Italian center Greta Niccolai, who represents her national team and also captained ladies team Lugano last year, joins the team as well. Lastly, young defender Valérie Christmann joins from HC Davos Ladies

Naisten Liiga (Finland)

Naisten Liiga schedule announced and can be viewed here. The season will star in September with a mini showcase in Turku where all teams will play their first few games

Forward Pauliina Salonen returns to HIFK. The 20 year old was one of their top producers last season and spent some time on the national team during their five nationals tournament

Kiekko-Espoo extend Minttu Tuominen, Tiia Pajarinen, Aliisa Toivonen, Siru Lehtopelto, Tea Villilä, Nea Katajamäki, Lisette Täks, and Nea Koskipalo. Tuominen, a star defender who was drafted by the PWHL but ended up playing in China and then Finland instead last year. Also notable is Pajarinen had 16 solid starts for Kiekko-Espoo last year, and got some looks on the national team. Tea Villilä has also been a mainstay producer on Kiekko-Espoo for the past several years. Täks finished with the most goals in Naisten Liiga. All this to say, Kiekko-Espoo has brought back significant core pieces

HIFK brings back goaltender Miia Vainio, who had the most shutouts last season

Tilli Keränen, who captained Finlands U18 team in 2022-2023, will play one more year at KalPa before going to the NCAA in 2025-2926

KalPa also brings back Captain Johanna Juutilainen

One of Ilves top scorers, Noora Mylläri, will return this year

EWHL (Central/eastern Europe + other assorted counties)

EV Bozen Eagles announced the signings of Justine Reyes and Kristen Guerriero to play in the EWHL and Italian women’s domestic league. Reyes was one of the SDHL’s top scorers last season, and Guerriero had a productive season in the SWHL

Veteran defender Enikő Tóth returns to the EWHL after spending last year in the SDHL, signing with MAC Budapest

Charles de Lorraine - 2nd cardinal de Lorraine, one of the foremost members of the powerful Roman Catholic house of Guise and perhaps the most influential Frenchman during the middle years of the 16th century. He was intelligent, avaricious, and cautious.

christmas arrived with joy and merriment at the crowley estate, but it brought a sense of unease for nathanael. despite his inner turmoil, the family embraced the festive spirit, reveling in the celebrations and commemorating the end of the war. however, amidst the cheerful atmosphere, katya found herself battling a cold, dampening her spirits.

little alice ophelia crowley was born in 1915 in the midst of the war, her birth being assisted by her aunt and grandmother. luckily, the birth went over smoothly and the child was a happy and healthy little girl.

with the days flowing by, it wasn't long before katya went into labour! nathanael was disturbed by the perils of childbirth and opted to stay out of the birthing room, leaving katya with only the support of lisette. fortunately her prior experience with midwifery ensured a safe delivery for her mistress.

after a long and arduous night of labour, katya brought two precious lives into the world. the little boy, born first, was named joseph jonathan crowley, after katya's beloved friend and the boy's grandfather. the little girl, on the other hand, was named lucretia lydia crowley, after her grandmother.

nathanael left off for war in germany in the early autumn of 1914, leaving his pregnant wife and three children home waiting for his return.

one cloudy morning, katya went into labour, this time a short one - after two hours of pushing with the help of lisette, she gave birth to a little girl! the child was named marian eleanor crowley, after her paternal grandmother.

life at the crowley estate was increasingly dull and lonely for katya as she spent most of her days alone. although she could visit town, she had no friends or connections there. as she fell pregnant, it was decided that hiring a lady's maid would be the best solution. katya was thrilled by this - having a new friend would be lovely.

the new maid hired to keep katya company was a miss lisette schroeder, whose cheerful disposition was a much needed ray of sunshine in the otherwise cold estate. from the moment they met, katya and lisette got along swimmingly, quickly forming a deep bond. her new companion was a breath of fresh air for katya, who had been sullen by shortcomings in her life time and time again.

on a chilly november evening, as katya immersed herself in the melodies flowing from the piano in the parlor, lisette approached her with an unusually radiant and excited demeanor. "miss katya, have you heard!?" she silently screamed. "the war is over! germany has finally surrendered!"

katya turned around, a loud gasp leaving her mouth. "oh my days, lisette! that's simply fantastic!" the two women hugged and danced, giggling like schoolgirls from the happy news. "nathanael, sir, did you hear?" lisette asked nathanael, who sat in the corner smoking his cigar. she received no reply, only a glum glance to her direction, and knew to leave well enough alone.

nathanael watched the women's jubilation, longing to experience even a fraction of their joy. while he was glad the war had come to an end, a sense of uncertainty weighed heavily upon him. what would come next?
