Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Paul Belmondo in Léon Morin, Priest (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1961)
Cast: Emmanuelle Riva, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Irène Tunc, Nicole Mirel, Gisele Grimm, Monique Hennessy. Screenplay: Jean-Pierre Melville, based on a novel by Béatrix Beck. Cinematography: Henri Decaë. Art direction: Daniel Guéret. Film editing: Jacqueline Meppiel, Nadine Marquand, Marie-Josèph Yoyotte. Music: Marital Solal, Albert Reiser.
The “hot priest” trope got a brief revival recently in the series Fleabag, when Andrew Scott and Phoebe Waller-Bridge struck a few sparks together in an amusing flirtation. Otherwise, priests have had a bad rep in the media since the news broke about widespread clerical sexual abuse. We have to go back to Jean-Pierre Melville's Léon Morin, Priest in 1961 to find a serious and unsensational treatment of the moral crisis that clerical celibacy can foment. It's a story set during the German occupation of France during World War II, in which a young woman (Emmanuelle Riva) finds herself attracted to a young priest (Jean-Paul Belmondo). It's a richly developed story in which faith, sexuality, and politics converge, made more intriguing by the performances of Riva and Belmondo, who vividly portray not only the sexual tension but also the intellectual and spiritual questions provoked by the encounter.

An addition to the previous ask, right here.
I want to insist: the literary study of fairytales is not *my* method. I do not think it belongs to me, and it is not some sort of exclusive thing I cannot get out of.
The “literary” angle of study is the method of my research director, the method of the university teacher that gave us a class on fairytales, it is the method of the various current experts on fairytales authors (Tony Gheeraert, Nadine Jasmin...) in France, it is the method favored by teachers of comparative literature in university... And it is the one I favor when studying French literary fairytales - Perrault and d’Aulnoy. (Because being literary works, trying to look at them primarily through folklorist lenses does not work)
But it is not “my” method, I do not consider myself some sort of representative or agent of this method. I just want to be clear on that.
Again, I want to insist: the “literary studies” are primarily for literary fairytales. And given right now I am speaking of Basile, Perrault, d’Aulnoy and many more authors of fairytales, I am bound to favor, prefer and push forward the “literary” aspect first and foremost. Cause they’re literary fairytales, you know? But the game might shift when it will come to others (I notably plan to cover the Kabyle fairytales for my ogre series, and there I cannot use the “literary study” in any way - oh yes I also don’t know if what I said was clear, but “literary vs folklorist” only applies to European fairytales. It is about the main corpus formed by the most famous European tales: Perrault, Grimm, d’Aulnoy, the Pentamerone, the Andrew Lang books, etc etc... Outside of Europe, the debate stops. Except for America, where the debate can extend thanks to a lot of European fairytales being brought over there - for example, there is an old Missouri French-speaking folktale that has been collected, and that is very obviously just an oral variation of madame d’Aulnoy’s “Cunning Cinders”, with too many details borrowed from her to be purely folkloric in any way. I’ve got it in my books if you are interested)

also hank/nadine!
falls asleep on the couch: Hank, after a long case.
makes friends with the neighbors: Honestly, probably Hank.
is the adventurous eater: Mmmmmm Nadine. She loves to try new foods from different cultures and such.
hogs the covers at night: HANK. But usually Nadine solves this with cuddles.
forgets to do the dishes: Neither of them forget, but Hank often has to drop everything and go work a case. When he can do the dishes, though, he does.
tries to surprise their partner more often: Both of them love coming up with small romantic surprises for each other.
leaves dirty laundry on the floor: Nadine likes to take care of her home, but laundry's definitely her weak spot.
stays up til 2 AM reading: BOTH. They'll be leaning against each other, her reading some fascinating nonfiction about anthropology and him reading a murder mystery he solves by chapter 3.
sings in the shower: Hank. Loudly.
takes the selfies: Neither of them are big selfie people, but when selfies happen, it's usually Hank taking them.
plans date night: MMM I feel like I've answered Hank for most of these, but honestly, he fits for most of these. Sometimes, though, if he's been working a pretty intense case for awhile, she'll put something relaxing together for him once it's over.

Throwing Back The Apple: The fiction of Carmel Bird.
From the pages of Carmel Bird’s 2004 novel, Cape Grimm, come dark and disturbing images of elemental and charismatic evils set on an island Eden tainted with blood. That Eden is Tasmania — wild and beautiful, but redolent with a history of atrocity, massacre, and murder. The paradox of Tasmania’s beauty, and it’s relation of generational brutality, has led a lot of writers to use it as a setting to explore gothic themes. The paradox is a profoundly powerful metaphor in the work of Tasmanian native, Bird’s work.
“Tasmania is attractive to other writers who are not from within it, but also see the possibility of the Gothic there,” says Carmel Bird. “But Tasmanian writers like Richard Flanagan and myself can’t help ourselves and have to write about it. There’s an urgency in my wanting to write about how I feel about Tasmania, because so much is written about it that’s on the surface and isn’t concerned with, nor bound up with, the heart of the matter.”
The heart of the matter is found in Tasmania’s disturbing colonial history — beginning with the transportation of English and Irish convicts to the settlement in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. “It’s a straight historical line that can be traced,” says Bird. “British and Irish prisoners were sent there for two reasons. One was to get rid of them. That, at least, is the popular line that had been taken on them. But reading between the lines it’s clear that there was a second, and real, economic reason for it. They were sent to claim and farm the land. Apparently it would have been much cheaper to keep them on the floating prison hulks in London.”
The birth of colonial Australia was brutal and murderous. A remote island situated at the bottom of a colonially unexplored land led to the basest aspects of human nature coming to the fore, which find their echoes in Bird’s fiction; “This very distant, very beautiful island — part of the Great Southern Land became the location of a contained form of cruelty and oppression. On top of that there was the massacre of the indigenous peoples who were all but removed. Because it’s an island, because it’s small, because it’s concentrated, and because it’s so far from everything, and hangs off Australia in the middle of nowhere going to the South Pole, it’s the perfect locus for dumping the darkness in the human imagination; particularly of the Western World. For a very long time it has literally been a location of horror.”
Cape Grimm delves into the dark side of that human imagination with the story of Caleb Mean — a cult leader and mass murderer. Caleb is the third protagonist in a series of books (the Mandala Trilogy) that explore the charisma of evil. “I did set up to write a novel about a charismatic evil man, and then a charismatic evil woman, and finally a charismatic evil child,” says Bird. The two previous books The White Garden and Red Shoes are substantial works depicting the seductive allure inherent in power, and the abuse thereof. Weaved into the narratives are fairy tales and classical mythology — stories of saints and madmen, little mermaids, and sleeping beauties.
Fairy tales have always been a strong source of inspiration for Bird; “I was much nourished and inspired by the Brothers Grimm, and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen — lots of Norse myths and the like. They were fascinating and troubling. These tales have lodged in my imagination and my heart and have informed much of what I have written ever since. When I was constructing Cape Grimm, and because so much of it is concerned with children, I felt I was allowed to include the whole narratives of those stories as something upon which my work floats.”
In Cape Grimm and Red Shoes Bird retells such tales in an appendix devoted to the myths, metaphors, and stories that inspire and bind the narratives of the novels. The connection to the fairy tale world and Tasmania — a place likened to such a landscape — is essential for the author. “The thing about Cape Grimm is that there is a place called Cape Grim in Tasmania. It has always fascinated me and I had always connected it to the Brothers Grimm, so I decided I would write a novel that made that connection… Ever since I was a child I have been alert to, and collecting, passing references to Tasmania in fiction and non-fiction. Such references characterise it the way we may characterise Timbuktu or somewhere as this weird, distant, funny, dangerous, dark nothing-place.”
It is Carmel Bird’s consummate skill that binds so many narratives and metaphors together to create stories of exquisite and visceral unease. Yet, within the stories lies a profound beauty and grace which she reveals with fine prose. Like the island of paradoxes that inspires her, Bird’s writing is filled with the dualities of dark and light, attraction and repulsion, and, most importantly — fascination.

OC-Tober Day 26: Costume
OC: Nadine Griffin
Fandom: Grimm
Pairings: Hank/Nadine
Warnings: None
@oc-growth-and-development
-
Her parents would be furious if they knew. Then again, she has no intentions of picking up the phone and calling them. Hank’s life is in danger, and she’s suddenly all too aware of how little she won’t do to save him. Normally she’d turn to Nick (or maybe even Trubel, though the girl still terrifies her a little) for this, but they both have emergencies of their own; neither one even picks up when she calls, and she knows this is up to her.
Technically, she knows it isn’t clothes that will make or break this, but she has a feeling it’ll help her with confidence, so she heads to the nearest thrift store.
The only combat boots they have are a size too large, so she buys some thick socks to go along with them. She debates for awhile between the dark jeans and the ripped ones, before finally grabbing the first; she can put a few rips in them herself. The shirt is less of a concern-she’ll stick to something in her closet, honestly-but the key is the jacket.
Thankfully, they have half a dozen leather jackets, in varying shades and sizes. She grabs a dark one decorated with metal links and spikes, and as a bonus, snags a pair of tight black gloves.
Perfect.
One more thing she needs: shades.
With her outfit put together, and a quick stop at the Shop, she double-checks the address on her phone, and heads on over, gathering her courage. She can do this. She can do this.
For a split-second, when she steps out of the car, she forgets to breathe altogether. This is a dangerous bluff, after all, and if she gets caught, she and Hank both might die. Then, she forces the thought from her head. It’s not a bluff, she tells herself, trying to coax herself into the right mindset. It’s true. And I’m very angry. And I’m going to go get my husband back.
She doesn’t bother knocking, just marches up to the front door and flings it open. It vaguely resembles an office, and two men sit at desks, typing away at computers. They look up at her warily, and one frowns.
“I’m sorry, but we don’t admit anyone without an appointment.”
“No?” She strides up to the desk, and the men lean back slightly. With a quick sniff, she realizes they’re Reinigans. Perfect. “Where’s Hank Griffin? I’m not going to ask you twice,” she adds sharply, when one hesitates.
The one who spoke to her before clears his throat. “Wh-who are you?”
She smiles, and it takes everything in her not to woge, to show her teeth. “Ever hear of a Grimm?”
(They take her right to Hank. He looks up at her blearily, the dork, and grins. “I like the outfit.”
She rolls her eyes. “Come on. Let’s get you out of here.”)
