The Birdcage (1996)
The best Comedies are the ones you can watch again and again, and the same jokes make you laugh every time. This is accomplished with excellent writing, a mix of physical and intellectual comedy, and a brilliant cast. One movie from the 90s that ticks all these boxes is The Birdcage. Released in 1996, the film was directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate) and adapted by Elaine May (Primary Colors) from Jean Poiret’s play, La Cage aux Folles. In The Birdcage, Armand Goldman is an openly gay nightclub owner whose South Beach drag show stars his effeminate and flamboyant life partner, Albert. When Armand’s son Val comes home and announces he’s engaged to the daughter of an extremely conservative senator, it throws Armand and Albert’s life into disarray.
The Birdcage is a tastefully done gay-comedy that features some of the best comedic dialogue ever written. It stars Robin Williams (Jumanji), Nathan Lane (The Producers), Gene Hackman (Superman), Dianne Wiest (Parenthood), and Hank Azaria (Mystery Men), all delivering some of the finest acting and nailing some of the greatest physical laughs ever directed. If you’re not in hysterics at what’s coming out of the cast’s mouths, your sides are splitting due to their facial expressions, exaggerated gestures, and pratfalls. Lane’s portrayal of Albert absolutely steals the show, and the dedication to one another depicted between him and Williams, is so sincere, the family that has the most fundamental values, ends up being the one the world disapproves of at face value.

Brian - ultramarines, the poster boys and always very strong

Armsmaster - iron hands
Eidolon - custodes
