LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
June 5, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JUN 06, 2024
Today the S&P 500, which tracks the stock performance of 500 of the biggest companies on U.S. stock exchanges, closed at a new record high of 5,354. The Nasdaq Composite, which is weighted toward the information technology sector, also closed at a record high of 17,187. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was also up, but not to a new record. It closed at 38,807.
That notable economic news got very little attention, likely in part because there is so much else going on.
Most dramatically, House speaker Mike Johnson elevated Ronny Jackson (R-TX) and Scott Perry (R-PA) to the House Intelligence Committee, giving them oversight of the entire U.S. intelligence community and access to the nation’s most sensitive foreign intelligence. The Intelligence community includes intelligence from the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Space Force, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Department, the State Department, the Department of Energy (which oversees information about nuclear weapons), the Treasury Department, and the Department of Homeland Security.
It also oversees the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and that oversight is likely a key reason Johnson put Jackson and Perry on the committee.
A former Navy admiral, Jackson was Trump’s White House physician. Trump liked him enough to try unsuccessfully to promote him into the cabinet and within the U.S. Navy, and then to back him successfully for Congress after he retired from the Navy in 2019. In 2022 the U.S. Navy demoted him from admiral to captain after a 2021 report by the inspector general of the Defense Department showed he had “disparaged, belittled, bullied, and humiliated” his staff and abused alcohol on at least two occasions when he was supposed to be providing medical care to government officials.
Perry is more problematic than Jackson. Cassidy Hutchinson, former aide to Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, told the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol that Perry played an important role in the plan to keep Trump in office after he lost the 2020 presidential election. She told podcast host Scott Lamar in October 2023 that Perry was “central to the planning of January 6,” and she has said repeatedly that Perry asked Trump for a pardon before he left office.
Federal authorities from the FBI seized Perry’s cell phone in 2022 as part of their investigation into the effort to seize the presidency; he is the only member of Congress whose cell phone was seized. Like Trump, who has attacked the FBI since then-director James Comey refused to drop the investigation into the connections between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russian operatives, Perry has complained bitterly about the FBI’s investigation of him.
Now, Perry will be on the committee that oversees the FBI. In a statement, he said: “I look forward to providing not only a fresh perspective, but conducting actual oversight—not blind obedience to some facets of our Intel Community that all too often abuse their powers, resources, and authority to spy on the American People.”
Former director of the CIA General Michael Hayden wrote: “That’s unbelievable. Both of them. Intelligence Committee? God help us.”
There is other news about the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election: yesterday Wisconsin attorney general Josh Kaul filed felony forgery charges against attorney Kenneth Chesebro, who planned the use of fake electors; former judge James Troupis, who managed Trump’s 2020 campaign in Wisconsin; and Michael Roman, a political operative who allegedly delivered the paperwork for Wisconsin’s fake electors to a congressional staffer to try to get them to Vice President Mike Pence.
On January 6, 2021, after the document was delivered, Troupis texted to Chesebro: “Excellent. Tomorrow let’s talk about SCOTUS strategy going forward. Enjoy the history you have made possible today.”
In Georgia, a court of appeals paused the case against Trump and his co-conspirators from proceeding until it rules on Trump’s appeal to disqualify Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis. It has tentatively set a hearing date for October 4, meaning that voters will not get to learn the outcome of the trial until after the election. If Trump is reelected, the trial will almost certainly not go forward.
The federal criminal case against Trump for retaining classified documents is also stalled. Judge Aileen Cannon not only has put off hearings, she has added a hearing on June 21 to consider whether Special Counsel Jack Smith was properly appointed in the first place. She is revisiting a decision already decided in the affirmative in 2019 by the Washington, D.C., Court of Appeals. She has also taken the highly unusual step of inviting three people not involved in the case to argue in that hearing: two will argue that the appointment is invalid, one will argue that it was done properly.
Meanwhile, there were signs over the past few days of the deeply different party principles at the heart of the 2024 election. At an event to reach Black voters in what Julia Terruso and Sean Collins Walsh of the Philadelphia Inquirer described as “one of the whitest and most conservative parts of Philly,” Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL), who is Black, illustrated the grip of a fantasy idyllic past on MAGA Republicans.
Donalds praised the Jim Crow era of American history—which was literally named for a vicious caricature of African Americans that helped to justify the lynching that characterized the period—because “during Jim Crow the Black family was together.” He blamed the Great Society programs of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, including civil rights and social welfare programs, for eroding family values.
On the House floor, Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) urged Donalds to “check yourself before you wreck yourself.” Democratic National Committee chair Jamie Harrison was less poetic but more succinct. He wrote: “These fools have lost their damn minds….”
In the Senate, Democrats forced Republicans to vote on advancing a bill to protect access to contraception. Republicans threatened a filibuster, meaning it would take 60 votes to bring the bill forward. And so the measure failed by a vote of 51 in favor to 39 against (Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer of New York voted no so he could bring the measure up again). Republican senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted in favor of the measure. All the other Republicans either voted no or did not vote.
All the Republicans running for reelection this year voted no: John Barrasso (R-WY), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Rick Scott (R-FL), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).
Some of them said they voted no because there was no danger that Republicans would attack contraception, claiming that Democrats were just “fear-mongering.” But in 2022, House Republicans overwhelmingly voted against protecting contraceptive rights, and in an interview last month, Trump said he was looking at restrictions on contraceptives before his campaign walked the statement back. Yesterday, in a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee on “How Abortion Bans Have Created a Health Care Nightmare Across America,” a Republican witness, Dr. Christina Francis, chief executive officer of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) took the position that IUDs and Plan B emergency contraception constitute abortion and should be banned. In the Senate itself, Jodi Ernst (R-IA) has already proposed getting rid of Plan B.
A February 2024 poll showed that 80% of American voters said that protecting access to birth control was “deeply important” to them.
For all their rhetoric about “America First,” MAGA Republicans are out of step with actual Americans. The Trump loyalists now in charge of the Republican National Committee also appear to be remarkably ill-informed about the country itself. Sam Brody, political reporter for the Boston Globe, noted yesterday that on their website promoting the Republican National Convention to be held in July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Republicans used a photograph not of Milwaukee, but of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City.

Instead of screenshotting my phone, here’s everything posted in one place!
Anime & Manga

* Juri Yubari’s first name comes from Digimon Tamers character Juri.

* Siegfried Rosenkreuz of the Sons of Salem gets his name from a boring filler arc villain from Yu-Gi-Oh.
* Demon detective Jubilee Jones’ name comes from Yubel from Yu-Gi-Oh GX, fitting since they have a condition that causes them to shift genders.
* There is a ridiculous amount of references to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure:
* Minor character Winston Alessi is named after minor villain Alessi from Stardust Crusaders.
* Rhapsody Von Braun’s first name comes from the Stone Ocean stand Bohemian Rhapsody.
* The character Kenzo gets his name from a minor villain in Stone Ocean.
* Silverwing Enrico Luna gets his name from Stone Ocean villain Enrico Pucci and his second Stand C-Moon.
* Sons of Salem member and ice skating spellcaster Giona Giovanni’s name is inspired by Giorno Giovanna of Vento Aureo, namely the fact he is also a “GioGio.”
* Giorgio Nero gets his surname from Risotto Nero, a minor antagonist in Vento Aureo.
* Hansel Armstrong partly gets his surname from the Armstrong family in Fullmetal Alchemist, who much like him are alchemists.
* Eve’s lover Remina gets her name from Hellstar Remina.
Comics
* In general, the use of alliterative names is an homage to the usage of such in comics.
* Remy Delacroix gets his first name from the X-Men character Gambit, though unlike Gambit he’s a complete asshole.
* Darkest Dawn member Todd Zsasz’s last name comes from a Batman villain.
* Sons of Salem werewolf witch Winnifred Sinclair gets her name from X-Men character Rahne Sinclair AKA Wolfsbsme.
* Cletus Booth, head of the Rebel Lodge, is named after Spider-Man villain Cletus Cassidy/Carnage.

Film
* Jojo Faust is named after the movie Jojo Rabbit.
* Damien Moonchild’s first name comes from the character from The Omen.
* Jason Leeds’ first name comes from Jason Voorhees, for no other reason than to make a corny joke about it.
* Blaire Williams’ first name comes from The Blair Witch Project. Get it? Cuz she’s a witch named Blaire?
* Gideon Golightly’s last name comes from the Cinema Snob’s last name, as revealed in his first movie.
* Iris Ravencroft gets her surname from Ben Ravencroft from Scooby Doo and the Witch’s Ghost. Her father, Nigel, is named after another role Ben’s voice actor Tim Curry played: Nigel Thornberry.

* Antoinette Leblanc’s last name is inspired by Benoit Blanc of the Knives Out movies.
* Silverwing Mickey Bishop is named after Mickey Knox from Natural Born Killers.

* Morag gets her name from the lake monster said to live in Loch Morar.
* Piper gets his name from the Pied Piper, who similarly controlled rats.
* Tyrfing gets his name from a legendary cursed sword.
* Eve’s name comes from the Biblical Eve, hence the strong connection with snakes and apples.
* Amon’s sister Eden gets her name from the Biblical garden.
* The Leeds family gets their surname from the legend of the Jersey Devil, AKA the Leeds Devil.
* Farrah Highgate gets her name from the Highgate vampire incident, which she was canonically involved in in-universe.
* Lazarus Lux of the Sons of Salem is named after the Biblical Lazarus.
* Nick Scratch, Sebastian Darke’s devil son, gets his name from two of Satan’s monikers: Old Nick and Mr. Scratch.
* Hansel Armstrong gets his name from the story of Hansel and Gretel, something that is commented on in-universe as he went through a similar experience as a child.
* Sebastian Darke’s merfolk daughter Charybdis gets her name from the whirlpool-creating monster of Greek myth, fitting for the queen of the Mediterranean and doubly so since she loves to create whirlpools herself.
Literature
* The hunter organization the Silverwings gets their name from the bat-themed novel Silverwing.
* Humbert Archambault gets his first name from Humbert Humbert of Lolita, though rather than being a pedophile he is only a horribly unpleasant person.
* Both in and out of universe, Dorian Ferris gets his name from Dorian Gray.
* Mina Lovett gets her name from Mina Harker from Dracula; by a stroke of luck, “Wilhelmina” is also a name attributed to Mrs. Lovett.
* Allen Lecarde’s name is obviously supposed to sound like “Alucard”—Dracula backwards. This is commented on in-universe.
* Arya Mournblade, the main character of an in-universe film franchise, gets her name from Arya Stark of A Song of Ice and Fire fame.
* Yorick’s witch coven member Red Death is a big shout out to the works of Edgar Allen Poe, from his moniker to his real name (Fortunato) to the name of his raven familiar (Lenore).
* Cyrus Lovelace gets his surname from the villain of The Amulet of Samarkand.
* Rose Milliner gets her name from the psychic vampire Rose the Hat from Doctor Sleep.
* The surname of the Cullens family is inspired by the family of the same name from Twilight.
* Vampire clown Wayne Nicol’s last name is a sort of twist on Pennywise from It; instead of a PENNY, he’s a NICOL, because as a good guy he’s worth more. Harhar.
* Sebastian Darke’s djinn daughter Shahrazad is named after the narrator of the Arabian Nights tales.
* Very weird case with Amalric Dracula; while initially he was meant to be a public domain crossover character, he changed so much and is so radically different (he’s a good guy, he’s not white, etc) that he’s really only getting the name from the famous vampire.
Music
* Sebastian Darke’s first name comes from the band Sin With Sebastian.
* Marianna Cross is named after the Ghost song “Mary on a Cross.”
* “Little Sunshine,” Darke’s pet name for Goldie Dawn, comes from the Ghost song “Call Me Little Sunshine.”
* Roxanne Sumner and all of her alters are references to Police:
* The name Roxanne comes from the song of the same name.
* Her surname is the same as Sting’s.
* The alter Stewart is named after drummer Stewart Copeland.
* While the alter Dolores’ name comes from the novel Lolita, it doubles as an allusion to an infamously clunky line from “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” that mentions “That book by Nabokov.”
* The alter Bottles is named after the song “Message in a Bottle.”
* The alter Frances is named after Sting’s ex-wife Frances Tomelty. Her moniker of “Breathtaker” is a reference to “Every Breath You Take.”

* Weston Love’s is named after the Iron Maiden song “Wasting Love.”

* Valentine Leeds’ name is partly inspired by My Bloody Valentine.

* Norman Grieves’ surname comes from the song “Mr. Grieves” by Pixies.
* Izzy C. Palazzo, the magical clown girl from the Sons of Salem, has the initials ICP, a reference to Insane Clown Posse.
* Macheath Sharpe’s first name comes from the song “Mack the Knife.” In addition, their father’s family name was Fleetwood, which technically makes them Fleetwood Mac(k).

The thread can be about anything you wish, but it must have at least 6 notes by the time it's due on July 19th at 11:59pm est. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Pairs are below the read more.
Note: Some pairs have a club beside their names. This just means that both characters have signed up for that club which gives the players a potential thread/connection idea.
Please like this notice once you've read it so we know everyone's on the same page!

ANNALIESE BLACKLEY is here. Turns out the 51 year-old used to be a pathologist, but now they contribute as a surgeon. Better watch it — they’re known to be both maternal and anxious. They’ve been around for four years, but we’ll keep an eye on them just in case. They remind me of muffled cries in the dead of night, working hard to avoid sleepless nights, a smile desperately trying to remain bright anyway. — raquel cassidy / she/her / cis woman
Tumblr media
Basics
Name: Annaliese Blackley Age: 51 Old Job: Pathologist New Role: Surgeon Gender, Pronouns and Sexuality: Cis woman, she/her and Bisexual Time in group: 4 years Family: Mother (Annabelle Blackley) deceased pre-apocolypse, Father (Andrew Blackley) deceased in the early days, Sister (Angela Blackley) deceased recently. Partner (utp) status unknown. Children? up for plotting.
Character Inspo
Elizabeth Waring (Raquel's guest chara in DCI Banks), Angelica (Hamilton), Emily Prentiss (Criminal Minds), Amy Santiago (Brooklyn 99), Martha Jones (Doctor Who), Lisa Cuddy (House MD), Marcus Bell (Elementary)
Biography
Annaliese, affectionately called Anna, was the eldest of the two Blackley daughters. She doesn't remember life without her little sister and from a young age she took great pride in the title of 'big sister. They were a close knit family and Anna always lived near her parents.
She was always very shy growing up, tending to stick to the sides if she could. A typical wallflower. Anna would have a few close friends though that she is extremely loyal too. Loyalty is still a trait she holds dear.
When time came for college Anna decided to go into medicine. She was good at science and wanted to help people. In the end though it didn't work out. Whilst she was good with her studies and even managed a suitable (if slightly serious) bed manner her anxiety worsened. She worried about hurting people or being unable to help.
In the end she became a pathologist, she was able to use what she learnt for medicine and still help people in finding closure.
She worked at a local hospital in Arizona when the virus began. Anna tried to help in the beginning but it spread so quickly. When her own father got bitten when she was away trying to find a group the guilt was too much. She and her sister left their home to find safety and joined the group that set up in the prison.
Anna is likely known by htose in the original group but she didn't take a leadership role like her sister. Shetreid to help anyone who needed it and settled into life.
She campaigned for the doors to be opened to newcomers, again she wanted to help.
Now though Angela died/turned under mysterious circumstances. She feels extreme guilt and grief about it all. She no longer trusts newcomers, unable to believe that the people she's lived with for years would hurt Angela.
Wanted Connections
Partner - can be any gender. Most details can be up for plotting but I like the idea that they are Anna's opposite mannerisms wise so quite outgoing and overly friendly.
Best Friend - Anna's really going through it right now, give her a ride-or-die friend who is by her side and understanding even when she's being rude.

💖 and/or 😈 for your ask meme if they haven't been done yet?
Thank you so much for the ask! <3 I’m so, so indecisive so I just kind of rabbled but THANK YOU for giving me an excuse🙏😂
For 💖:
I LOVE Alejo & Sofia! WNSD is really cool as a series in that the Gang seems to skew a little older so it’s fun to see the Gang with a friend who has a wife/son/family.
I’m also huge into Rufus & Phylidia. I wrote some meta on them in the tags of this post and I have to give them a shout-out. :)
Crystal & Whirlen and Calvin Curdles & Alma Rumblebuns have very adorable side romances in Abracadabra Doo. I enjoy Crystal & Whirlen individually and I think their interactions are so cute! The bg behind Alma and Calvin is perfect and v romantic.
Lena & Simone is !!!! SO MANY THOUGHTS ABT THEM <3
Mayor Nettles & Sheriff Bronson Stone are very adorable together. I also loved his dynamic w/Fred Jones Sr.
THE OG MYSTERY INC from SDMI. It would have been really interesting to see more background on Ricky & Cassidy & Brad & Judy & Professor Pericles. There’s so many interesting dynamics between the core group, especially concerning how everything fell apart. The way they came together only to fall apart later on has so many details that never got fully explored but would have been legit fascinating to see!!! I was also always curious about how the five of them connected to Fred Jones Sr./what that dynamic was like. :)
For totally platonic relationships: I love Crystal & Amber from Alien Invaders, Penelope Bailey and her dad from WNSD’s Recipe for Disaster, and for some reason the dynamics of the band from Simple Plan and the Invisible Man is cute to me. The relationships between the fathers and daughters in Ghoul School also always really warmed my heart (esp The Mummy & Tanis 🥰).
THE HEX GIRLS!! they really deserve the chance to be developed further and I would die and kill for a piece of media that’d get to explore their relationships with each other further.
Surprisingly, I was also pretty touched by Muttley and Dick Dastardly’s bestie-ship in Scoob!
For 😈:
Velma & Omar in Where’s My Mummy. ICONIC. They have my heart!
Captain Cutler from SDWAY!! (and him in BCSD, my little guy). He’s my fav of the iconic WAY villains. His outfits, his vibe, love it!
Bill McLemore ❤️ he is literally so dumb and weird and I have a million random thoughts abt him and how much he loves baseball
^speaking of shout to my other baseball boy Bob Taylor from The Unnatural. we love a villain who commits crimes out of love 🥹
Also: Steve from Stage Fright (just a goofy guy)! Captain Skunkbeard from Pirates Ahoy (very!! good design)! Marcy from WNSD’s A Scooby Doo Halloween (she is my always and forever Corn Princess 👑)! Meadow from Homeward Hound! Phylidia from Riva Ras Regas (I love women)! Headless Horseman from TSDS! Green Giggling Ghosts/Phantom Shadows (I actually think they are THE most iconic Scooby Doo villains of all time)! The Ghost of Mother from BCSD! and Marcie Fleach if you count her ofc 😌

Romantic connection
[EMERSON CASSIDY (DAISY EDGAR-JONES)] is looking for their [OLD CRUSH/BROTHER’S FRIEND]. They are [25-28], and look an awful lot like [LOGAN LERMAN, MAXENCE DANET-FAUVEL, THOMAS DOHERTY, MICHAEL EVANS BEHLING, ITZAN ESCAMILLA, DIEGO BONETA, JEREMY ALLEN WHITE, UTP]. Muns [DO] have to contact mun before applying.
Emerson grew up in Aurora Bay with her brother. Their parents were in and out of jail before ultimately passing away from drug abuse and in such a small town, the siblings were whispered about and treated like outcasts. While her brother Jameson rebelled, Emerson turned to books and became a bit reclusive, hiding behind the stories she could read rather than face reality. One boy didn’t treat her any differently though since he was an outcast as well. He was a friend of her older brother’s and what started as just seeing him at random around her brother became more and helped her get out of her shell. Emerson grew to really like him but never acted on her feelings, especially once her brother was sent to jail as well. She left town for college but is back now and is seeing her old crush for the first time in four years. tl;dr, give me the jess to my rory

JACKSON CASSIDY( JOSEPH QUINN) is looking for FOSTER SISTER. They are 25-28/ Witch/Human/ Shifter and look an awful lot like ZENDAYA, ANYA TAYLOR JOY, MAYA HAWKE, DAISY EDGAR JONES, TAYLOR RUSSELL, JASMIN SAVOY BROWN, COURTNEY EATON, UTP. Muns DO have  to contact mun before applying.
(TW: accidental murder and abuse)
Jackson had been abandoned by his parents and was sent to live in a series of foster homes growing up. After several tries he found success around the age of sixteen in the home where the connection had also been living. The pair got on incredibly well and became fast friends, to the point where the pair began to behave like they were actual siblings. He was also building up to tell her about being a shifter as well but never got the chance. The connection had been officially adopted by the foster parents and we’re going to adopt Jackson as well but when the connection's boyfriend grew abusive over time, Jackson stepped in and the pair got into a fight that escalated out of control and killed said boyfriend. Jackson didn’t want to cause any problems for his family or his sister and left before the cops could ask him any questions. He didn’t want to bring the bad name of his birth family into the home of the family that had welcomed him. After that he’s been mostly  MIA for over ten years and has been trying to hide or stay off the grid for long periods of time. However, due to the lack of consistent contact and the need to be near a pack for his mental health brought him out of hiding for the foreseeable future which led him to Sleepy Hollow. It would have been at least ten years since the lie crossed paths aside from a few letters he tried to send to her but they may or may have not ever been delivered.

Sabrina & Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine
Kali Fajardo-Anstine’s magnetic story collection breathes life into her Latina characters of indigenous ancestry and the land they inhabit in the American West. Against the remarkable backdrop of Denver, Colorado—a place that is as fierce as it is exquisite—these women navigate the land the way they navigate their lives: with caution, grace, and quiet force. In “Sugar Babies,” ancestry and heritage are hidden inside the earth but tend to rise during land disputes. “Any Further West” follows a sex worker and her daughter as they leave their ancestral home in southern Colorado only to find a foreign and hostile land in California. In “Tomi,” a woman leaves prison and finds herself in a gentrified city that is a shadow of the one she remembers from her childhood. And in the title story, “Sabrina & Corina,” a Denver family falls into a cycle of violence against women, coming together only through ritual. Sabrina & Corina is a moving narrative of unrelenting feminine power and an exploration of the universal experiences of abandonment, heritage, and an eternal sense of home.
Sorry for such a wide range of books, but I've been really excited about these titles and wanted to share them will y'all! Next week I'll try to do a specifically kidslit list.... maybe for Asian authors?!!

Zawe Ashton on Bringing Her "Quirky" Love Story to Life in "Mr. Malcolm's List"
Tumblr media
Zawe Ashton grew up a Jane Austen lover. Her gateway to the world of Regency romance? 1994's "Emma," starring Gwyneth Paltrow as the titular heroine.
"When you've loved a book and you see it being imbued with so much contemporary humor and with one of the biggest movie stars in the world at that time, it feels exciting," the actor tells POPSUGAR. It's appropriate that Austen's prickly Emma was Ashton's favorite, since her scene–stealing character in the Regency romance "Mr. Malcolm's List," Julia Thistlewaite, is, as she puts it, "so Emma-y." Plus, Ashton's middle name is Emma.
Ashton only had 24 hours to decide to sign on to the movie, directed by Emma Holly Jones (another Emma!) and based on the novel by the same name from Suzanne Allain, who also wrote the screenplay. "I read the script. It was the intersection of so many genres that I am passionate about, rom-com and this new wave of Regencycore that we're seeing," Ashton says. She fell in love with her character immediately. Plus, Ashton has a "very clear intentionality" about supporting first-time female and other underrepresented directors. It was easy to say yes.
Ashton explains about the film's premise, "We meet her four seasons into her unsuccessful matching with the husband. Just felt like something was very contemporary about meeting a woman at this point in life where society and her mother and all of this messaging is saying, 'For goodness sake, just make a match already, just marry yourself off.' "
But Julia, for all her wealth and snark, is still intent on marrying for love, a promise she made to her friend Selina (Freida Pinto) when they were young girls at school. "She's a woman who knows her own mind, and society isn't necessarily supporting that," Ashton explains.
Once Ashton arrived on set, she says it was easy to form connections with the rest of the ensemble, who she calls "glorious." There was, of course, the challenge of getting to know people when COVID-19 restrictions demanded they wear masks and shields most of the time. But she says that they quickly realized they had a lot of connections, and with familiarity came "effortless" chemistry. Her favorite scene to film was the big dinner party, for which most of the cast was together. "All of that fizzy energy was just really palpable."
"You're not supposed to say that," Ashton admits. "You're supposed to say, 'I worked very hard to establish the connections. I was working hard to pretend that I liked Oliver Jackson-Cohen.' Actually, we became best friends on day one. And the only challenge that I saw presented to me was how I was going to keep a straight face in doing a film with him."
Jackson-Cohen plays Julia's cousin Lord Cassidy, and the two are a classic, catty pair of friends. "We are very much hoping for a spinoff," she jokes. "So if you could just start that campaign, that would be wonderful."
Ashton's onscreen love interest is Theo James as the dashing and slightly ridiculous Captain Henry Ossory; viewers might not even recognize him with his resplendent mustache. "I'm looking forward to people seeing the blooper reel so they can see just how hard it was to not break character when I was with him," she says. "He's got such a wicked sense of humor."
"Theo's such a brilliant romantic, leading partner as well, because he was kind of the anti-hero," she says. "And it's just so much easier sometimes when you don't have to carry the central love story. You can be much more quirky, maybe a bit more acerbic. And that was just very, very fun to do with him."
The other relationship she loved playing out was that between Julia and Selina. "[It's] that push and pull friendship that has existed from childhood that feels so familiar and safe, that you can sometimes show up as maybe not the best version of yourself, but it will always hold you and sustain you," she says. Ashton explains that she's had similar "very long, fruitful female relationships" in her life.
Ashton hopes she's "quite different" from her character, though she loved diving into Julia's mind. "There's something about the way that she leans into high society," she explains. "Bless her, she's been really conditioned and trained to exist in that echelon of the world. And that was something that I really, really loved embodying and getting under the skin of. Because I personally am not about to go to the opera wearing a huge feather and have that be a status symbol."
Julia, she notes, also "finds it hard to let her guard down." "I don't struggle with that," she explains. "I let people in all the time. I don't have a guard. I need to build a guard. So it was very satisfying to play someone who has that edge to her."
Julia gets her happy ending, and it mirrors some big changes in Ashton's own life. On June 29, Ashton and her fiancé Tom Hiddleston went public with the news that they're expecting their first child. And her career keeps on rolling; in 2023, she'll appear in "The Marvels," the upcoming "Captain Marvel" sequel.
But it's not a happy ending for Ashton; she's just getting started. (x)
