#... do I have a fiber arts tag?
no one knows how much it hurts when a little thing dies. when a bug runs its fate is already decided. what made him know he could get away with hurting me? he made me small enough to forget i was ever a person. i forgot and forgot under his boot.

As requested, here’s the progress on one of my “completed” whales :) Naturally, I still have to edge it and attach it to the jacket, but it’s so sparkly.
You can also see my nice antique pincushion in the back :)

You have no idea
I did not actually make it out of this stall without yarn but I did manage to leave without spending ridiculous amounts of money on muskox fiber.
Though I must say of all the places on earth to be a livestock animal, Alaska does not seem like great luck. But yay for local fiber 🐏🧶🐑

WIP Wednesday
We're up to 22 leaves now. These take less yarn than I originally estimated, but I'm sticking with my original plan to knit leaves until I run out of this yarn, then attach them with scrap yarn from something else. I haven't decided yet if that's going to be the leftover bits from my socks, or a different yarn though.
This yarn had a very slight fade from a brighter green to a darker green, but I like the slight variety that creates in the leaves' colors!
Quite a bit of progress made on the second sock this week. I'm a bit ocer halfway through the foot. My goal is to finish that up this week.
I also restarted the cardigan this week! I ended up changing needle sizes, and then when I went to do the math (since my guage is now smaller than the pattern guage) I realized the size I was working on would have been way too big, so I didn't have to switch which size I'm following, just which needles I'm using.
I also did a bunch of swatches/mock ups, and I've planned out how to do the ribbing to make it look best when I pick up stitches for the button band, as well as how I'm doing the buttonholes and other small details.

The colors of the copper on blackberry dye seem to have shifted from maroon to a very rich milk chocolate brown--which I will hardly complain about, since that's a hard brown to get. I do hope I get something more permanently reddish/purplish with alum--that's what I'll try next. I'm just waiting for the 9 pounds of raw fleece to arrive.
Last night I carded a lot of that blackberry dyed fleece and then put it on the blending board with about half of the white (which was the previous distaff dressing) as a little stripe to one side. Idk, just curious how it'll turn out and seemed more interesting to spin that way. Carding first definitely helps with consistency--both colors were willowed first and put on the blending board, but only the brown was carded as well, and it is much easier to keep smooth and least kind of even.
The one improvement of this phone camera over my old one is that it has a timer setting, so I can actually show where my hands normally are (sometimes anyway). Fairly comfortable although my distaff hand is starting to cramp. Might just be one of those days or might be too heavy for me, but the shape at least is good.
You can probably see that the white is still all over the place, but the brown is pretty even, just with lumps still on occasion. Also, the new height of this spindle means it's perfect for lap spinning rather than impossible to lap spin with, so I'm very happy about that.

I have never knitted anything more complex than a simple scarf, and never used a knitting pattern in my life, but I am determined to learn more cool things. I have found a recipe for pretty braided gloves, I have read it, I understand it, and I am prepared to make the gloves.
once I acquire knitting needles.
and also a bit more understanding on knitting in the round I guess. The recipe didn't include the "how to transition from one row to the next" part.

I had to stand on my bed to take this photo, and I think that's iconic:
I still need to weave in the ends, but this is the back panel complete! I went through thirteen skeins (429yards/392meters/~9,806.94 Dinoponera Gigantea ants) to finish up this panel, but I'm only about 36% of the way through the recommended size.

Latest artfight! Tried something new with the beads and it went...okay? Was some Friendly Fire/Revenge!
Also this was the original design I was going to try for but I improvised due to available materials and the difficult in cutting the wings out of the fabric I chose and not wanting to waste it.
This is Kaolin of Alabaster by Araenu on Artfight and also @araenu on tumblr

Okay, because I'm allowed to be a little weird about puppets and dolls on here, I need to share the new crochet(/knitting was optional) stitch markers I just got in the mail, because I am SO FUCKING STOKED TO USE THEM. (Only had a knitting WIP to model them with, I haven't started a new crochet project yet.)
THE EYES DO THE DOLL BLINK THING!! SO COOL! And teeth are just so #aes (I'm always gonna be thinking about like collecting teeth in the Alice: Madness Returns video game I was obsessed with. [Maybe I can paint them gold, even? Just an idea.])
This seller has so many whimsical fiber art related things (along with really gorgeous yarn I'm lookin' at). Like two years ago, I bought a facehugger cupcake stitch marker from them (along with slasher movie knife stitch markers!) Where in the world else are you gonna get creepycute unique items like these for all your yarn craft needs?!
Seriously, these are so freaking fun, I love them SO much. I definitely recommend the seller SillySheepDesigns on Etsy if you're a fiber art person.

I'm not paid to say this, I'm just SO excited about having my weirdness needs met.

I’ve blocked out this scarf and I can’t get the diagonal ends quite straight but it feels nice to do. The problem with the fishnet pattern is because it’s essentially a grid it’s painfully obvious where I messed up stitches, and the other problem with the project in general is I didn’t realize that the two yarns I used had different elasticity. I would have liked to make it longer but it was hard to gauge length and how it might differ given what yarn im using vs what the pattern used.
But! We live and learn, and next time we’ll make sure to use the same type of yarn. So I’ve learned to pay attention to yarn when I’m using more than one yarn.
The other thing I learned is that god having wires for blocking makes things so much easier. I can’t believe I haven’t tried this before. Or using foam blocking boards instead of cardboard scraps. Sure it cost more but in the long run I’ll get way better results with wires and mats than trying to do my best freehand with cardboard.
I’ll get some better picks once it’s done blocking.y crafting area is in the basement where there’s not much light.

So in other news, I've gotten into handspinning yarn about three weeks ago, and I don't even remember how, but I've been having an excellent time with it!
How it's started:
some ultrafine merino combed top (meant for felting, technically) spun into a lumpy but nicely soft... Something... using the most hi-tech equipment imaginable
(click on the image for full-view; I didn't want this abomination of a DIY spindle to take up the entire post)
How it's going:
(the above yarn was still spun on the CD spindle from hell, btw)
somewhere in there, a friend gifted me a much nicer spindle I'd been eyeing, which I'm currently using to spin up a bunch of consistently thin singles to try and make 4-ply yarn with.
I've spun about 7 oz of wool into yarn so far, and I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I've got a few more small fiber testers to work through, and then it's onto about 4oz of Corriedale combed top - which means I have to start thinking about what kinda yarn I want out of that. Should be exciting!
(I may also be eyeing a few more kinds of fiber art, because right now my yarn options are knitting (badly), crocheting (mediocrely), and tossing yarn at a more skilled friend (this one's gonna work great but it's kinda missing the point x'D). Might try out tablet weaving or nålbinding next...)
