Origins of the Samadhi Fire and Timeline Bleed

So episode five is a bit of an odd duck. We have Pigsy having a crisis as MK's father, which fits because it helps him grow, shows more of MK's past and its importance, and makes things more of a gut punch later.

Mei's crisis of confidence does fit. She's been having these issues on and off, and like ninety percent its about the Shadowpeach parallels and she's living that Warrior life.

Then there's this guy.

In a season where they just cut out the dragon and tiger's trial, the fact this guy was around to be an Obstacle is rather weird. Unless, of course, the Red Son lore was more involved with the season than it first appears.

So as I spoke about in MK's First Dad, the world of LMK is going through its timeloops and NHD has been altering time. With the alterations happening, I believe timelline bleed is happening. Now what does this have to do with Red Grandson?

The reason why he was created. Red Son has a lot of odd things he says in combination. He says he's the creator of the Samadhi Fire. This we know. But then he goes and says he's looking into the origins of the Samadhi Fire. When, you know, he's supposed to be the origins. So for some reason, Red Son both acknowledges he's the creator, but somehow he is not the originator.

And then it became a rabbit hole because there are a few moments that are...odd in season three.

And what if the reason there is a whole Samadhi Fire doggy is to bring forth the fact there IS timeline bleed and stuff will come about because of that.

One of the things I always wondered in Season 3 was why did Mei and Red Son have their visions. In a way, the visions make sense. Red Son is the creator of the fire and Mei has a ring. It makes sense there's a reaction when they have contact...except Red Son and Mei had so much contact in Revenge of the Spider Queen. Why was it only when it was CLOSER to the Samadhi Fire being released was Red Son getting visions in contact with her.

In fact, why did Ao Guang? Mei touching the scroll would track to it making something go off, but why did touching her provoke something in him?

And then there is Tang. He spoke of using the scroll under Macaque's order as a thing of destiny. Why is this his destiny? Why is he so certain, especially when the only person who HAS had strong destiny feelings have been villains...and MK. Destiny has been shown to not be a thing to trust, and yet Tang does strongly and keenly in this moment.

Because he's done it before.

Mei has done it before.

Even Ao Guang has done it before.

And Red Son has done it before.

In the timeline without MK, the Lady Bone Demon is always released around this time. Whether by the Demon Bull Family, the Mayor, or Macaque, SOMEONE releases her. And Wukong can't ignore her threat. Wukong always goes for the Samadhi Fire. Which means collecting the rings.

Which means eventually collecting Mei. But his path until then is one he's doing alone. Macaque may or may not be a factor (I'm betting he's not always revived), but since he doesn't have to go save MK, he's able to get more distance before Macaque could potentially show up. He gets the other three rings, and he goes for Mei.

Which is when he meets Ao Guang, because this man has STRONG Samadhi Fire feelings, he likely knew something of what happened with Ao Lie and knew Wukong was coming. Likely there was a confrontation until they come to some kind of accord or Wukong just beats him.

Red Son likely gets involved because it is the Fire and he can't just ignore it.

And Tang gets involved because he was needed to activate the scroll.

Ao Guang remembers when he last saw his nth-great granddaughter. Tang remembers when he read the scroll before. Mei and Red Son have visions THIS time because now they're at the point in the timeline that it was happening and they were starting to remember.

But why? Why is this bleed so strong compared to everything else?

What does this have to do with origins?

Because the Demon Bull Family and Red Son especially are proof to the dramatics of NHD's alterations to the timeline and for one very good reason.

Red Boy is a goddamn PROBLEM for him.

Its no secret LMK has dramatically altered the DBF.

LMK DBK and PIF are couple goals. In the Journey, DBK leaves PIF to marry some pretty thing and breaks her heart.

LMK Red Son is still with his family and very proudly a villain. In the Journey, Red Boy was taken drafted by Guanyin as a new disciple after she bound him in a collar and manacles close to Wukong's circlet.

Now this gets interesting because LMK specifically REFERENCES the incident in season 2. The vase that absorbs the soup dumpling is used to contain an ocean to dump on Red Boy's head because it took a literal actual ocean to get the boy to stop setting everything on fire.

Which also brings up the interesting fact that Wukong has only gotten a definite victory over Red Son in season three when he sucker punches him into the building.

In the Journey, Wukong is brought to a stalemate with Red Boy. Red Boy can't fully drive Wukong away or kill him, but Wukong also can't get through the flames to retrieve Tripitaka after Red Boy kidnapped him. Wukong is running out of time before Tripitaka gets eaten, and all his clever plans aren't working, so he goes to Guanyin for help. And rat out that Red Boy pretended to be her to stop one of those clever plans, Red Son was always an arrogant little brat.

Guanyin was affronted enough and cared about Tripitaka enough to come herself. She dumps an ocean on Red Boy, and then tricks him to sit on a bunch of swords until he begs for mercy and when he still chooses to be a little shit after the pain stops, he's bound in the manacles and a collar.

From there, Red Boy lives with Guanyin in heaven, and becomes her disciple. He's still kind of a little shit, but he does take the teachings and such seriously. Red Boy REDEEMS himself.

But Red Son doesn't. The ocean incident happens. Red Son has his confrontation with Guanyin. But instead of being stuck in heaven, he's allowed to go home.

How? Why? What changed?

NHD did. But why does NHD care?

Because if Red Boy was a problem as a child, imagine how much of a problem he is if he grows up, WITH the fire, and is a dedicated agent of the Heavenly Host?

When NHD was changing timelines early, he wasn't as subtle. He tries to stop the Harbinger. He gets Wukong to help. He's disruptive. He's OBVIOUS.

And Heaven doesn't approve.

And Red Boy is sent to keep destiny on its path.

The Harbinger is difficult enough for Wukong to try and wrangle for when NHD chooses an aggressive approach. NHD hasn't had enough time to perfect his chaos powers either. If Red Boy gets involved, the Harbinger is in the pillar, things start again. (And maybe MK deciding Red Son is friendshaped is a lingering fondness.)

Plus there is also the possibility for what Red Boy can DO and likely why Red Son is experiencing the dimensional bleed.

The Samadhi Fire is the ultimate wild fire. It destroys, BUT when properly harnessed, it can also forge. The Lady Bone Demon believed this, and the lady is pretty smart. There is a very good chance that Red Boy was able to use the Fire at times to help weld the pillar together.

He isn't strong enough to FIX it, but he can give it a patch job.

Making NHD's plan harder by either way things shake out.

He tries to find a work around! And something odd he notices over time.

Every time loops, Red Son is forging the Fire earlier and earlier. He needs less training. He needs less time. The fire just comes faster and faster, and he struggles to control it.

So NHD decides to use that. He devises a ritual to remove the Fire and when Red Boy has a few too many outbursts, its decided to remove the fire.

....except then Red Boy just reforges the fire LATER when he has more control. Especially when he is recruited to train Mei in controlling the Fire after its reforged in her. An eon later, he's still a problem.

NHD realizes then, Red Boy cannot remain an agent of heaven. He must be removed however he can.

But at this point, NHD is still trying to be a hero so he can't just murder the kid.

However, Red Boy's control of the fire is slipping more and more each cycle. Easier and easier to create an outburst.

Part of DBK and PIF having a falling out is the loss of their son. It created a distance because PIF is not good at comfort, and DBK is not good at admitting weakness, and Jade Face Princess swoops in like a hussy.

NHD just has to ensure Jade Face Princess can't get to DBK and alters the ritual just a bit. Further define requirements to get both DBK there...and Nezha. Nezha with all his daddy issues.

Provoke enough outbursts from Red Boy before the distance can expand between DBK and PIF to get the ritual done quickly. The Fire is removed. DBK has his child. And Nezha, in a feeling of sympathy, allows for DBK to take Red Boy home instead of returning him to Guanyin.

And now Red Boy is Red Son, free to grow up with his parents until his father is sealed, and grows up with his mother, and becomes a lot more bitter about the world and distrusting of gods as a general rule, outside of the one who showed his family kindness.

And out of NHD's way.

It does bring up the interesting change of DBK always being freed, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't anything for NHD to worry about, and would become an important tool later.

BUT WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ORIGINS, YOU ASK.

Why was Red Son slowly losing control of the Fire?

Because of what the Fire IS.

The Samadhi Fire is a reality destroying weapon. Its a destroyer...and forger of reality.

Red Son doesn't know the origins of the Fire despite knowing he's the creator.

Because Red Son knows there was something WRONG in how he created the fire. It came too easy. Too naturally. Like it was always there, despite the fact its a power created.

That's because it was always there.

Red Son IS the origin of the Samadhi Fire.

He was just the origin a countless number of time loops ago.

The Samadhi Fire, once created, cannot go out. It can be smothered down to an ember, but the spark will forever remain. There is no way to be rid of it, only move it. Make it difficult to build the fire into anything dangerous by dividing that ember.

Red Son was losing control because he wasn't creating the fire through training, but by reigniting what was already in his soul.

Because the Fire IS part of his soul.

Samadhi is the final stage before enlightenment. Its the step in the path where one is able to conceptualize All Is One. This is probably why the fire is so dangerous and why it can't go out. It burns everything, not because its burning everything, but because its MAKING everything into ITSELF. And as such, it also cannot go out, because whatever the Fire is apart of, IS the Fire, and since there is no way to isolate the Fire into the literal void, there is always something for it to be the same AS.

And another note of Samadhi is, if achieved improperly, the person just goes insane. A necessary step before understanding All Is One is needed to understand that All Is Different. (Enlightenment is just like this, okay.)

Red Son's soul had achieved Samadhi properly to create the Fire, but his mind in each successive time loop hadn't. He didn't go full blown mad, but it was getting harder and harder for him to keep it at bay. Especially because he was young. His sense of self is ill defined and barely developed, which is terrible for seeing yourself as different from the fire that was telling you you're the same as it.

Luckily, for all of Mei's self doubts, she has an extremely strong sense of self, or else she really might have more problems with the Fire.

But to remove the Fire from Red Son, it means removing the part of his soul that hold the ember for the Fire.

A part he gets back again when the world resets.

Along with the Fire.

And he makes it easier and easier without knowing why.

So why does Red Grandson exist?

One is to potentially explain the dimensional bleed.

Or another, something is coming to fuck up reality and the heroes are going to need the tools to reforge reality to keep things from totally falling apart.

Because the Samadhi Fire can burn reality. Because it can never go out. Because it understands all is one and individualism is an illusion. The Samadhi Fire will destroy anything that attempts to be rid of it.

Or make it something new.

☆ namjoon: bull shark

one cool thing about bull sharks is that they can swim in both salt water and fresh water, super adaptable, super cool and hence why they’re namjoon. and in my humble little opinion, they’re just cooler versions of the great white 🧍🏻‍♀️ plus they’re like the big boy shark top of the shark food chain, perfect place for our favourite guy namjoon

☆ hobi: lemon sharks

i love lemon sharks because they have favourite humans, and love head pats, and form emotional connections with divers, and get jealous when their fav human being shows and attention to another lemon shark. 10/10 sociable shark, perfect for hobi

☆ jungkook: tiger shark

tiger sharks are just built different. and have probably had anything you can think of in their stomachs, they eat anything. they’re also known for having huge litters and after ‘seven’ and ‘3d’ 🤨 plus tiger sharks make it into my top 3 favourite sharks so maybe i’m a little biased

☆ yoongi: whale shark

whale sharks are gentle giants, and have been one of my favourite sharks since forever. and i think people think they’re scary because they’re huge, like school bus size. but they’re just cuties :( who eat lil shrimp and algae and have lil teeth and are so pretty. also random whale shark fact they can process more than 6000 litres of water every hour 🫡

☆ jimin: thesher shark

honestly just silly little guys 10/10 my favourite shark. they look like cuties but thresher sharks can stun their prey with their super cool tails, which i think if we’re looking at jimin and the sassy man agenda… don’t let cute looks fool you. also!!!! thresher sharks can jump out the water and do cool flips, comparable to jimin’s super cool contemporary dancing ☝️

☆ jin: hammerhead shark

a distinctive shark, and a distinctive face. hammerhead’s haven’t actually been around for as long as other species of shark, only existing for around 20-25 million years (where other sharks have been around since the dinosaurs), which may seem contradictory to jin’s age, however, this mf doesn’t age and has looked as young as he did the day he debuted

☆ tae: blacktip reef shark

black tip reef sharks are a little shy and skittish, and tae is often a little bashful, especially on live (in a very very taehyung way), so i feel they fit one another. however! that doesn’t mean they’re not social, which with bts and the wooga squad and everyone else tae meets, 10/10 black tip reef shark kinda guy

Humans were never meant to mingle with the gods. They were meant to be worshippers, dedicating their lives to these divine beings. There was no such thing as falling in love with one of them, or at least that's what you believed before you actually met one of them.

You were a marine biologist, the ocean's wonderful and mysterious animals the objects of your fascination and awe. You also loved the water, and could spend hours just swimming with the fish in their enclosures at the rescue center you worked at.

One of your particular endeavours, the one that actually caught the sea god's attention in the first place, was rescuing a baby tiger shark that was about to be eaten by fully grown bull sharks. You'd brought it to the center, nursed it back to health, and practically raised it until it was ready to be released.

You didn't ever think that would lead you to meeting a handsome stranger on the beach who had seemingly come out of nowhere, nor did you think that you'd manage to start and maintain a relationship with this man.

He was so kind, so gentle and he shared the same passion as you about marine life. You never suspected anything about who he really was, not until he took you aside the night after you both found out that you were pregnant.

"Look, uh...I know this isn't going to be easy for you," he started, a little nervously, "But there's something you need to know. Somethung big, actually, and I'm sorry I've kept it to myself for so long. But this time with you...it's been the best I've had in a long while. And I didn't want to ruin it."

You started getting nervous, wondering where this was going, "What do you mean?"

He took a deep breath, taking your hands into his larger and warmer ones, "It's okay if you don't believe me right away, but you'll see when our baby is born. They're going to be special, in a lot of ways you won't expect. Because I'm not just any ordinary human...I'm Poseidon."

Your jaw dropped, before you laughed nervously, "That's a joke, right? Cause of how much I love Greek mythology? It's really sweet that you're trying to make me laugh right now, but-"

"I mean it," he stated firmly, squeezing your hands. "I am the Greek god of the sea." To prove his point, the waves crashing against the shoreline outside the cabin died down, as if by command. "I didn't want you to know, because I was enjoying your company so much as an ordinary person. But now that you're having my child...he or she will be a demigod." He placed his hand on your stomach, and warmth spread throughout your body, relaxing your tense limbs. "I can't promise to be involved in the baby's life, but I will watch over you two."

You frowned at that, "Are you leaving? Before the baby is even born?"

He sighed, as if he'd been asked this many times before, "It's not the best idea to raise the child around me. They need to be sheltered, especially because of their attractiveness to monsters, and I will only get them killed."

That was his excuse, he didn't want to tell you that it was normal for a god to fall for a human, have a child and leave. He genuinely loved you, and didn't want to hurt you like that.

You tried your best to understand, you really did. You still felt hurt, not understanding fully why he couldn't be with you if you loved each other so much. But you had to move on, because he was doing the same, and you weren't going to let him think that you were weak, especially since he was a god.

You gave birth on your due date, a healthy baby boy who barely even screamed as he was birthed. He came out quiet and calm, much like a certain god who fathered him. As you held him in your arms for the first time, you understood what Poseidon had meant about him being different. He radiated a different kind of energy, and to you he seemed, and looked, very much like the sea god. He was different, he was special, but you would love him no matter what. He was your greatest gift.

And, as you would soon learn, your doom.

Because years later, when he turned twelve, the first monster attacked. He dealt with it okay enough, coming out with only a few bruises and one deep gash, but the ocean water healed that. Another sign he was different, the ocean was his safety, the source of his power and healing. He could control it, command it, and bend it to his will. He could use it to fight, to heal himself, and to do whatever he pleased.

This power went straight to his head, and left you wondering where in all the years you had gone wrong in raising him.

Your son was everything that Luke Castellan would become (decades later), multiplied by ten. Angry, vengeful, scornful of the gods because they weren't around. Because they abandoned their mortal lovers and children, choosing to keep to themselves and stay up in their palace.

The city was flooded. Buildings were crumbling. Cars were crashing. It was all happening too fast, too much all at once. You didn't know where to look, where to go. Your cabin had been flooded first, so you fled into the city hoping the tsunami wouldn't reach it.

But it did.

A tsunami worse than anything your city had ever seen before was approaching, looming over you all like a monster straight out of Tartarus. Every fire hydrant on every street had burst, soaking people, cars and stores alike as water just poured in from all sides. It was the worst sea storm in history, one that was brought forth and controlled by none other than your son.

The boy you had raised, was now destroying a whole city in his rage. Blinded by anger and scorn, by hate for the deity that brought him life, he took other lives. It was unlike anything the gods had ever seen, one of the worst acts of rebellion ever committed by a demigod.

You had tried to speak to him, tried to reason with him, but he was beyond saving. His frustration and resentment had built up too much and caused him to explode, in the most horrifying way imaginable. This was not your son, not the sweet little boy who used to giggle at stingrays and grab baby sharks with his bare hands. Not the sweet boy who used to wake up early on Mother's Day to make you breakfast and remind you that you're the best part of his life. Not the sweet boy who understood why his father wasn't around, before all the quests.

Quest after quest, he suffered. Mentally, emotionally, and it changed him. He got angry that the gods refused to help, even when he was put in extremely dangerous and life-threatening situations. Furious that his father would ignore him when he called on him for help.

You didn't want to, but you witnessed the heartbreaking encounter between your distressed son and his father, who finally appeared to him after all these years.

"Where were you?!" You could hear (son's name) scream, atop a massive wave of water. "Where were you all those times I needed you???" He kept on going when Poseidon couldn't find the words, "Not once did you visit me, NOT ONCE! You just left me, and mom! All those times I called for help, all those times we were having it rough, and you couldn't help in ANY way!" His voice was so agonised, you felt tears pool in your eyes.

Your poor boy...

"Son, if you stop this now-"

"DON'T CALL ME THAT!" Your son roared, the wave getting higher and more imposing, "I WAS NEVER YOUR SON! YOU NEVER ACTED LIKE IT!"

Still, Poseidon tried to reason with the boy. But when that failed, and the sea god met your eyes, you knew exactly what had to be done. You shut your eyes in pain, an overwhelming ache growing in your chest.

And when you opened your eyes again, Poseidon was in front of you, his face the saddest you'd ever seen it. Sadder than the day he'd left.

"You know what they're going to decide about his fate," that deep voice you missed so much boomed, trying to speak gently, "You know what's going to happen, and I...I can't stop it. I wish I could."

"I know," was all you could choke out, before his strong arms wrapped around you comfortingly, and you were sobbing into his chest.

And when your eyes ran dry and all you could do was sit at home and stare out the window, he had to go. He promised he'd try to come see you, try to make things right, but you didn't think that was possible anymore.

You just had to live with it.

And beyond the halls of the Olympian palace, you heard their decree. You heard the decision that would inevitably be broken decades later...

"Each of us, Poseidon, Hades and myself, Zeus, shall swear an oath here and now to never bear children again."

A/N: I hope this was what you had in mind, or at least similar! Ended up being sadder than I thought, broke my own heart writing this but I still hope it was good enough!

DREAMESCAPE: RE-DREAMED EDITION!

Hey punchy peeps, yup it's me again I present to y'all my pride and joy, the Dreamescape AU! This time, redone with an idea I originally discarded when I was first making the AU, but I ended up using for the revamped version! Let's get into the ✨ lore ✨

THIS AU DEALS WITH DARK THEMES! BE CAREFUL TRAVELLERS!

This AU takes place in the span of the 1920s. The Macs live with their single father, Jerome/Doc Louis, having a docile and normal life. Their father works tirelessly to provide for his sons, being a middle class worker. With familiar faces surrounding their everyday lives, the family is content and lives out their days in joy. However, over a tense and perplexing time span, many people in their community begin to pass away unexpectedly with little to no closure on some of their deaths. Hysteria rises amongst the townsfolk; hysteria of a supernatural curse of well known origin, rooted in folklore, that threatens the adult population. And by proxy, the children of the town.

It is the Constellation of Shadows. An arachnoid, nightmarish entity that targets children through the adults in their lives. It invades the dreams of adults while they sleep, and takes them into its dark abyss of a web. It then mutates them, reforms them for its own purposes. Then unleashes them like wild animals to murder the children in their sleep.

Very few families have survived the Constellation's insatiable hunger for terror and demise: there are only two documented survivors of the Constellation throughout the years. Those families were never the same, suffering long term effects that led to either tragedy within them, or them disappearing from the town, never to be seen again. Hysteria once again breaks out, with the message to stay awake and alert at all costs and protect your children, as the Constellation cannot attack if you are not asleep or drowsy. However, it was only so long before the Louis household succumbed to exhaustion, and entered a deep slumber.

However, there is one hope. Father Dream. Father Dream is another folklore figure who, once upon a time, constantly did battle with the Constellation in order to uphold the safety of all dreamers. However, the feast of fear supplied to the Constellation allowed it to best Father Dream and trap him within his own seemingly unending slumber. However, Father Dream was still in control of some of his power. He blesses Mac with a special ability: the ability to resurrect the dead. Now, the Macs must face monsters of familiarity in order to make it out alive. Kaiser - Kaiser’s somewhat anti-social personality did put some off from checking in on him too frequently, but they knew he was in and working when they heard the ticking of the clocks within his workshop. Concern arose when the ticking stopped. When concerned folks went inside the old man’s shop to check on him, They found him sprawled out on the floor, stiff. He was surrounded by clocks, all had their hands frozen at the hour of midnight. He represents Chronometrophobia.

Disco - Way too suddenly did Louie Brown's show get taken off the air. An announcement was made in the newspapers shortly thereafter that the host had passed away. Though they didn’t release details, he was found to have cords of recording machinery taut around his neck, still seated in the recording booth. And with the recording machine on, but thankfully not on the air. He represents Sedatephobia. Hippo - Hippo and his people (women, men and children alike) were quite sociable with the public. Seeing as they weren’t native to the town and after a great tragedy for the tribe, the king seemed to have a certain desperation to be accepted and gain a new home, considering what happened to them. However, the Hippoans were extremely generous and shared their culture with the townsfolk. But, they all just… vanished one day. It was presumed that perhaps Hippo had tried to guide them to live elsewhere, but no one can say for sure what happened to them. He represents Anthropophobia.

Hondo - Though nothing was visibly perturbing about him, laid on either a couch or his bed, his camera was in close proximity. When the photos recently taken on it were printed out, they showed cryptic, vignetted images of Hondo at angles that appeared as though another person had taken it. Though there were no signs that another person had ever been there. He represents Photophobia.

Hugger - He said he just felt tired, and was going to take the winter months to rest. No foul play, no signs of injury, no nothing. He just appeared to have passed in his sleep. He represents Nyctophobia.

Tiger - He was found with red scratch marks all over, which were initially thought to be self inflicted. However, the cleanliness of his fingernails and the angles of the markings made it almost seem like… something was trying to escape from his own body. He represents Rhabdophobia.

Don - He and his wife, Carmen, had been out all day on a lengthy fishing trip. Even when dusk had arrived and fog had started rolling in, the couple still hadn’t returned. Their fishing boat that came floating back to shore, belongings and equipment still on it, but they were nowhere to be seen. He represents Thalassophobia.

Aran - The last his coworkers saw of him, they say he was quietly sitting on the docks with his legs hung over the water. Something he readily instructed others to never do. The very next morning, he was gone. They never found him. He represents Megalohydrothalassophobia.

Soda - When the cold months came over the town, his charming little ice cream parlor closed for the winter as he said he was going to go for a trip to the mountains. After the winter was over, with no word or sign of the man, concern also arose for him. They discovered him a while after. He was completely encased in frost despite the warmth returning. He represents Cryophobia.

Bull - The toll of the church bells at night brought a sense of dread over all that heard it. He was found knelt in a praying pose at the front of the chapel. He was already dead, clutching the jewel of the necklace he wore in his hands. He represents Theophobia.

Macho - The singer known as “Deep Blue” by his many adoring fans had a dark cloud over his head. A rumor mill had churned much devastating gossip regarding his personal life. Some even say it drove him mad. Regardless of the true motive, the performer was found with a slit throat. Some suspect it was a suicide, as the letter opener that cut his throat was in his own hand. He represents Scopophobia.

SPO:

Gabby - Even though he was getting on in years, Gabby always said that there was never a time he felt alive, even since his youthful years, due to the plethora of health issues he had developed over the course of his life ever since he was born. “I don’t recall the last time I ever felt young and spry, if I even did in the first place. So, getting old really doesn’t feel any different.” As such, it was a well known rumor that Gabby read many books to cope, to feel some kind of whimsy in his ever shortening life. He was found dead in his sleep at his desk, an open book beside him. He represents Gentrophobia.

Hurricane - A thriving meteorologist, he loved the experiences of being up in the sky on hot air balloons. On an unsuspecting day during a storm, he suddenly fell unconscious mid flight. A bolt of lightning struck the hot air balloon he was riding and sent him crashing into a building. He died on impact. He represents Astraphobia.

Bob - An impoverished homeless man, he often wandered about with cigarettes on hand. He secluded himself far away from others while he smoked. No one has a clue what really happened to him, as he was discovered lying in the mud. However, it was suspected that he had asphyxiated. He represents Homichlophobia.

Dragon - The dragon dancer troupe traveled to the town from Hong Kong during Lunar New Year. He piloted the head of the dragon during the ceremony. How sadly ironic that such misfortune followed a dance meant to bestow luck. He was discovered slumped in a chair in the dressing room made for the dancers, with the headpiece of the dragon over his body.. and his own decapitated head in his hands. He represents Atychiphobia.

Muscle - He was alone one night, and that was all that it took. He was discovered in the morning with slit wrists, surrounded by blood soaked gauze. He may have tried to save himself. He represents Hemophobia.

Heike - The once aspiring dancer faced the Constellation's wrath despite being a child himself as well. His limbs were bloody and twisted, yet he still held his signature fan in his hands, and wore his signature performing kimono. He represents Pistanthrophobia.

Clown - The circus was never the same without him. His face was painted half and half with his two circus personas: Serenata the Opera Singer, and Burlone the Jester. He represents Coulrophobia.

Narcis - For the short period of time that night, while his servants were not overseeing him, the Constellation struck. Though efforts were made to enter his bedroom as the realization dawned that he was in danger, the door did not budge until it was too late. He was found with the skin of the left half of his face completely removed. On his fractured bureau, there was a message written in his blood: “The beauty of my heart was never reflected in my face." He represents Cacophobia.

Hoy - The death of the dragon dancer deeply wounded the old man, as he was quite close to him. He died of a broken heart. (Broken Heart Syndrome) He represents Philophobia.

Rick and Nick - It seemed like death wanted to keep them together forever. They were discovered seated on chairs next to each other, their left hands sewn together. It was noted that when there was effort to cut the thread, the fingers of the brothers would twitch violently. They represent Thanatophobia.

It's possible the Brotherhood, at least Yellow-Tusk and Peng, may not have been aware of Wukong's previous miscarriage. After all, it's hardly relevant knowledge to anyone except for Azure! So when Yellow Tusk has a small moment of privacy to speak to Wukong, he cannot help but ask

Yellow Tusk: I have never seen you so obedient, Sun Wukong. Tell me, why are you allowing yourself to debate yourself like this on Azure's whims!? Have you no pride?

And his answer is the furthest thing he expected. Wukong admits he doesn't like it, but pride is an inconsequential matter when one's cub is on the line. He tries to keep the fact that Xiaotian is his second child, that he'd lost hus firstborn to miscarriage during the journey, but despite his best efforts he accidentally reveals too much. Enough, at least, for a certain elephant to piece together that Wukong's demure attitude is the result of him fearing the loss of his child... and that it was a fear Wukong seemed familiar with in a way that goes beyond the fear all new parents hold when they behold their first child.

Form there it isn't hard for Yellow Tusk to figure out that Wukong had to have had a miscarriage at some point.

The Brotherhood had not known of the First Egg. Wukong and his kin had slain them before they could wonder about the empty look in their former sworn-brother's eyes.

It had been a boon to learn of Wukong's connection to the royal family, and more so of his condition - the weakened grandson (+great-grandson) of the Jade Emperor made for the perfect bargaining chip.

But something is... Off.

Something that only Yellow Tusk cares to investigate further.

Azure was quick to believe that Wukong held no more love in his heart for Macaque for his abandonment, and was won over by the idea of keeping little Xiaotian as an heir. Wukong had not explicitly said "I'm all yours", but had merely suggested things that he knew could get Azure to halt any rash actions.

The ladies in waiting that tend to the new "Empress" and help quell any further advances from Azure, are clearly women of status - not common celestial maidens. They are all sisters, a mixture of celestial tiger and snake and frog, and they smell heavily of peaches and dew.

Wukong clutches his newborn like he's afraid to let them go, even when alone.

Yellow Tusk is a smart elephant, and Wukong's reaction to his questions confirm his suspicions. This child isn't his first, but it's the first to live. Clearly "something" had occurred in the many years he and the rest of the Brotherhood were away, perhaps even earlier during the Journey.

Wukong is willing to wager the entirety of Heaven, and even himself, if it means that Little Heaven is protected from harm.

And with Azure's mind becoming corrupted from holding the unstable power of the Emperor, Yellow Tusk is becoming nervous that Wukong's protectiveness isn't warranted.

He sighs with relief when he see their former Brother Bull return, kneeling with a strange glint in his eye. Bull claiming that he and the wife he had abandoned them for have since separated (an idea that's easily believed, given Princess Iron Fan's casual appearance in the Celestial palace before the coup) and that he wishes to take his place by their side as their brother once more. Azure grasps Bull like he's a returned soldier from battle, laughing in an uproar how he must meet his new Empress and Prince!

Yellow Tusk notices Bull's smile drop when he sees Wukong again, and can just sense that their brother is there not for them, but for the monkey before them. He makes sure to converse with Bull once they can be alone - he's the only one the elephant can trust with this vital task, and the only one Wukong would consider.

Xiaotian is leaving the Celestial Realm as soon as possible.

Blake's Jungle Book

The Jungle Book is Blake's secondary allusion, which is used to describe our Cat Girl's political plotline, her relationship with the White Fang and her interactions in Menagerie (her personal Jungle).

A POLITICAL FAIRY TALE

Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book is a metaphor for the author's moral and political beliefs. Unluckily, these ideals are not that good, as Kipling is the author of The White Man's Burden, a famous racist poem. In short, Kipling believed it was the duty of the white man to colonize and educate the "savages" (ugh).

This philosophy appears in The Jungle Book, as well (luckily not as much and together with better themes). Now, RWBY counters this by turning Kipling's premise upside down.

Kipling's works often present the English Colonialism as positive and helpful

Blake's Jungle Book shows a discriminated minority fighting for freedom, conquering violence and helping the world

So, RWBY's Jungle Book becomes an answer to the original tale. It refuses its racism, but keeps intact the vibrating characters and the powerful themes of freedom and self-discovery.

SUMMARY AND KEY ELEMENTS

The Jungle Book is not a novel, but rather an anthology of short stories that often have animals as protagonists. Among these, Mowgli's fables are the most famous and the focus of this meta.

So, here comes a summary of Mowgli's coming of age journey, which is told in several separated tales.

One night, a couple of wolves (in some versions Rama, the father, and Raksha, the mother) find a human cub and adopt him. They call him Mowgli (frog) because he is hairless. Still, the tiger Shere Khan wants to kill the baby. The matter is discussed at the pack's meeting, where Akela (the leader of the wolves), Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther all defend the child. In the end, Mowgli is accepted into the group thanks to Bagheera offering a bull for him.

Mowgli grows like a wolf of the pack and lives several adventures under the mentorship of Bagheera, Baloo and later on Kaa the python. He follows the Law of the Jungle and feels part of the pack (the free people). Meanwhile, though, Akela grows weaker and Shere Khan spreads his influence among the younger wolves. He convinces them to antagonize Akela and Mowgli. One night, Akela fails to kill the prey, which means the other wolves can kill him. Shere Khan wants to use this chance to seize the position of leader and have Mowgli die. However, Mowgli steals a pot of fire (the so called red flower) to use against the tiger, has him run away and saves Akela. Still, the pack is left with no leader and Mowgli himself feels betrayed by the other wolves siding with Shere Khan. So, he leaves the jungle and goes to live with the humans.

In the human village he is adopted by a woman called Messua and starts herding the buffalos. One day, he is reached by one of his wolf brothers who warns him Shere Khan is coming to kill him. Mowgli decides to attack first and has the buffalos run over the tiger, who is stomped to death. A human hunter sees this and enters a fight with Mowgli over the tiger's skin. The hunter turns the other villagers against the boy, who is forced to leave. He goes back to the jungle, where he is now considered a king, as a result of him killing Shere Khan.

However, the humans think of Mowgli as a demon now and lash out against Messua. They have the woman and her husband tied up to be executed. Mowgli frees them and then decides to destroy the village. He asks for the elephants' help and has them stomp over all the fields. In this way, the humans are forced to relocate and the village gets engulfed by the animals and the vegetation.

Some time later, a new wolf pack is born, but they are soon threatened by the red dogs, who are very aggressive and kill everyone in their path. Mowgli decides to fight together with the wolves and asks for Kaa's advice. The python helps Mowgli lead the dogs where the bees live. The insects emerge from their nest and kill half of the group, while the other half is defeated by the wolves. In this fight, Akela finally dies and tells Mowgli to go live with the humans.

Years later in spring, Mowgli follows Akela's advice and goes to another human village, where he finds Messua again. He goes to live with her and says goodbye to the jungle. Bagheera kills a bull just like the one he offered for Mowgli's safety in the beginning. This is the panther's goodbye and he, Baloo and Kaa all bless Mowgli, as he leaves.

Mowgli's story deals with themes key to Blake's arc.

1- Freedom

Your hopes have become my burden. I will find my own liberation…

Mowgli's pack is called the free people and Blake's White Fang fights for the faunus's freedom. Not only that, but the jungle animals call each other's brothers and sisters, just like the faunus in Menagerie do.

Bagheera went on, "Open your eyes, Little Brother"

Ghira: It's your brothers and sisters.

So, both Kipling's animals and Blake's faunus explore freedom. On the one hand the jungle animals follow the Law of the Jungle and are noble and free because of it. On the other hand the faunus must decide if giving up their own morality is a price they want to pay for their liberation.

Does being free mean you chain someone else up? Or is there another path to freedom?

2- The animal/human dychotomy

Past Blake: It’s simple, really. You could just be human, or just a cat, if you wanted. Really, it’s up to you. Blake: Why would I do that? Past Blake: Like I said, it’s simple, much simpler than trying to be a bridge between Humans and Faunus. Why struggle with that responsibility?

Mowgli and Blake are both animal and human. This in itself is a double-edged sword. On the one hand they find friends and allies both among the faunus/animals and among the humans. On the other hand they sometimes feel they don't belong anywhere. This conflict is explored by them moving freely between the 2 worlds.

Mowgli goes back and forth between the jungle and the human village:

He grows in the jungle, but leaves after the fight with Shere Khan

He lives in the human village for a while, but things do not work out and he goes back to the jungle after killing the tiger

He becomes an adult in the jungle, where he grows powerful enough to lead his pack against the red dogs

He finally chooses to start a new life among humans

Blake goes back and forth between Menagerie/the White Fang and Remnant/team RWBY:

She grows with the White Fang (her pack), but chooses to leave it after Sienna Khan (Shere Khan) becomes the new leader

She lives at Beacon (the human village), where she hides among humans and tries to conform. Still, things don't work out and Adam and the White Fang (the jungle) catch up to her

She goes back to Menagerie (the jungle) and grows strong enough to lead her people (the wolves) against the White Fang (the red dogs)

She finally leaves Menagerie and the White Fang (the jungle) and starts a new life with her team (humans)

So, Blake's story can really be told through The Jungle Book. Let's see to what extent and how the faunus of Menagerie fit the jungle chatacters.

BAGHEERA VS SHERE KHAN

The Jungle Book starts with a disagreement between Mowgli's parental figures and Shere Khan. They fight over the future of the newfound human cub. Should he live or should he die?

This same conflict is present in RWBY, as well. It is just that here the ideological clash is not about a single human child, but rather on the human race, as a whole. Should faunus try to live peacefully with humans or should they fight them violently?

Two leaders come to opposite answers to this question.

On the one hand there is Ghira (together with his wife Kali):

Kali and Ghira allude to all of Mowgli's parental figures, who are:

Raksha - the mother wolf who finds and adopts Mowgli

Akela - the leader of the wolf pack

Baloo - the bear who teaches the little cubs the Law of the Jungle

Bagheera - the black panther who used to live with humans

Kali is loosely based on Raksha in the sense that she alludes to the Goddess Kali, who is worshipped in some areas (like Bengal) as Raksha Kali (Kali the protector). She is also Blake's proud mama wolf (even if she is a cat :P) and is ready to do anything for her daughter's sake.

Ghira instead shares traits with all 3 of Mowgli's fathers. He is the leader of the White Fang, just like Akela is the head of the pack. He transmits his ideals of peace and equality to Blake, just like Baloo teaches Mowgli the Law of the Jungle. Finally, he is the chieftain of Menagerie, just like Bagheera used to live in the raja's menagerie. This is also why the black panther knows more about humans than the other people of the jungle. Similarly, Gheera wants to co-exist with the human race.

On the other hand there is Sienna Khan:

Sienna obviously alludes to the tiger Shere Khan. She is a tiger faunus, who despises humans, just like Kipling's character. Moreover, her personality is on some level similar to Shere Khan's:

Sienna: I'm starting to doubt either of you fully comprehend what it is that I want. I want humanity to fear the Faunus, to know that we demand respect! I do not want to start a war with the humans that we cannot win!

Here, Sienna basically says she is not gonna start a fight she is gonna lose. This personality trait is confirmed by her semblance Grudge, which lets her grow stronger and faster when facing a weakened enemy. In short, she symbolically grows more aggressive and powerful against an opponent already on their last leg. This is similar to the tiger, as Shere Khan is famous for fighting mostly when he has the advantage.

What's important is that Ghira and Sienna's rivalry mirrors Bagheera/Akela and Shere Khan's. On the one hand Bagheera and Shere Khan are opposites ideologically. The panther respects humans, while the tiger hates them. On the other hand Akela and Shere Khan are political enemies, as they fight over the control of the wolf pack. Similarly, Ghira and Sienna embody opposite ideals and disagree on how to lead the White Fang.

In the end, the 2 characters' stories mirror those of their literary counter-parts.

Bagheera and Akela remain close to Mowgli, who keeps following their teachings. In particular, Akela loses control over the wolves, but he is saved by Mowgli who grows into a leader of his own.

Shere Khan briefly becomes the leader of the wolves, but is defeated twice. First politically, as Mowgli humiliates him in front of the wolves. Secondly physically, as he follows Mowgli to kill him, but ends up dead instead.

Likewise, Ghira gives up the leadership of the White Fang and retires. Still, he gets his daughter back and Blake becomes his political heir. Sienna instead influences the younger generation (Adam, Blake and Ilia), but is killed by Adam, who steps up as her ideological successor. Her death even combines both of Shere Khan's defeats:

Mowgli wins against the tiger by using fire, which the people of the jungle call red flower. Adam is the red flower (cursed red rose) who steals Sienna's support and organizes a coup (political death).

Mowgli kills the tiger by having the oxens run over him. Adam is the bull who stomps Sienna to death and kills her (physical death).

Ghira and Sienna leave behind two opposite political legacies, which are picked up by respectively Blake and Adam. So, the panther and tiger's ideological conflict goes on with the cat and the bull's antagonism.

BLAKE VS ADAM

Blake and Adam's conflict ties with The Jungle Book in 3 different ways:

Blake is Mowgli and Adam is Shere Khan - They fight for survival

In The Jungle Book 2016 movie Shere Khan is blind from one eye. The tiger is said to have lost it to humans and their red flower (fire). This is very similar to Adam's backstory. He was abused by humans and lost an eye to them. As a result, he gets corrupted by a metaphorical red flower (the cursed rose), which turns him into a selfish beast. Both the tiger and Adam are blinded by their hate and are defeated because of this.

Not only that, but Adam's personality is really similar to Kipling's Shere Khan (way more than Sienna's). Both are bullies, which turn a wound (Shere Khan's injured leg and Adam's lost eye) into an excuse to hurt others. Both are short sighted and short lived leaders. Shere Khan's status as chief ends immediately because of Mowgli and Adam's command is lost because of Blake. Finally, both follow Mowgli and Blake to murder them, but are killed instead. The way Adam dies even alludes to the 2 ways Mowgli wins against the tiger:

Adam loses because of his anger blinding him, just like a crazy bull. Mowgli uses the oxens' fear and anger to lead them over Shere Khan.

Adam is defeated by Blake and Yang's combined efforts. In particular, Yang is the fire that helps Blake win against her personal Shere Khan.

So, Adam and Blake's conflict really mirrors Shere Khan and Mowgli's, with Blake gaining two big victories against the tiger/bull. The first political (at Haven) and the second physical (at Argus).

Blake is Bagheera and Adam is Shere Khan - They fight over Mowgli

Blake and Adam inherit Ghira and Sienna's philosophies. Not only that, but they make these ideals more radical:

Ghira: She's learned a lesson that evaded me until I was much older: That there is strength in forgiveness.

Adam: We're better than humans. We have everything humans have and more. Humans shouldn't just fear the Faunus, they should serve the Faunus.

Ghira admits that Blake has already surpassed him in terms of inner strength, idealism and ability to forgive. Adam claims that Sienna is not extreme enough in her grudge against humans. Humans should not only fear the faunus, but also serve them.

Blake mobilitates the faunus for peace and love, while Adam invites them to war and hate. So, what was a political disagreement for Ghira and Sienna becomes a full out fight for Blake and Adam. Once again, we have a black cat and a red beast fighting over how to deal with humanity. Symbolically this conflict becomes about one simple soul:

Ilia can be seen as based on Mowgli, especially when it comes to her backstory and chameleon traits:

Blake: Why… why'd you join the White Fang? Ilia: Same reason as you. Blake: But… Ilia: But why fight when I pass for Human?

As Blake highlights, Ilia could pass up as human. In a sense, she is "hairless", just like Mowgli who is jokingly called by his friends "little frog". So, Ilia could easily blend in and this is at the center of her background:

Ilia: We lived in Mantle with the other Faunus working the mines. But my parents wanted something better for me. They managed to enroll me in an Atlas prep school. Imagine that - a little Faunus girl from Mantle going to the city of dreams. I felt like a princess. But I had to follow a set of rules. No bringing friends home, no talking about my parents…and absolutely, under no circumstances, was I allowed to change colors. No one could know I was a Faunus.

Ilia tries to integrate in Atlas (a human village) and perfectly follows her parents' rules (the Law of the Jungle). Still, things eventually do not work out and Ilia leaves Atlas disgusted and heartbroken:

Ilia: I lost control. Every inch of me turned blue as I wept. And suddenly all the girls that I'd laughed and played with… were scared of me. Blake: I'm sorry. Ilia: Don't be. I broke their teeth.

This story parallels and partly inverts Mowgli's. Just like the human cub, she finds herself adopted by people different from her. She feels part of the pack, but a sudden tragedy makes her realize this isn't the case. She is betrayed and leaves to go back to her people. She joins the White Fang, but finds a violent and controlling reality.

So, Ilia herself is the Mowgli Blake and Adam are symbolically fighting for. After all, she is a foil of both.

Just like Blake, Ilia is a young girl who finds herself in a toxic cult. She is confused and manipulated and can't really build up the strength to leave. Her arc also partly inverts Blake's. She starts by hiding her faunus heritage and goes on by joining a violent movement. Blake is initially a terrorist and later on covers her faunus trait. They conceal parts of themselves, both in the White Fang and among humans. Their goal is to be accepted for who they are.

Just like Adam, she is a faunus exploited by Atlas, who grows resentful towards humans because of the Kingdom's racism. They are also parallels when it comes to Blake, as they both fall in love with her. Despite their past feelings, they are also ready to hurt her. In particular, Adam comes up with the plan to kill Blake's family and Ilia takes part in it out of desperation.

In short, Ilia walks a fine line between Blake and Adam and can either turn a new leaf or spiral more:

Blake: That's what worries me about Ilia. She's not like Adam, not yet at least, but I don't know how long that will last.

Luckily, a happy ending awaits our chameleon Mowgli. The conflict between Bagheera and Shere Khan over her destiny is won by the panther and Ilia is happily adopted by the wolf pack:

She finds a sister in Blake and new parents in the Belladonnas. This fits Mowgli's story. Even if he buries his wolf parents in their cave (just like Ilia's die in a cave in), he finds happiness and an adoptive mother in Messua (and Ilia joins Ghira and Kali).

Blake and Adam are two Mowglis - They fight over the Jungle

Mowgli is a character with a duality to him. On the one hand he is honorable, loyal to his people and he refuses to kill humans, even if they treat him poorly. On the other hand he is proud, angers easily and he destroys a village for revenge. He is both respected and feared by his peers:

Blake: We were being treated like equals. But not out of respect… out of fear.

Blake and Adam embody these 2 different sides of Mowgli.

Blake is the Mowgli who fights for her family, her wolf one (Ghira and Kali) and her human one (team RWBY). She is mistreated by both the wolf pack (White Fang) and the human village (society). Still, she doesn't give up on either:

Blake: We're not going to destroy the White Fang. We're going to take it back.

Yang: But you never gave up on them (people). Even when they hurt you. You never give up. You know what matters to you.

Adam is the Mowgli out for revenge, who doesn't forgive either the faunus (the wolves) nor the humans (the villagers). He wants to be on top and relishes his enemies' pain.

Allusion-wise, this difference plays out in the aftermath of Sienna's death, which parallels that of Shere Khan's final defeat. As a matter of fact the tiger's demise marks the beginning of Mowgli's conflict with the humans. This happens because an arrogant hunter wants to take credit for the kill, so he convinces the other villagers Mowgli is a demon.

Well, Adam comes up with a similar lie:

Adam: Give our former leader a proper burial. All who were here tonight will claim that Sienna was murdered by a human Huntsman.

He uses Sienna's death to spread hate towards the humans and the Huntsmen. Not only that, but he manipulates the people of Menagerie into believing the Belladonnas are liars and enemies of the faunus:

Ilia: The Belladonnas are the worse kind of Faunus! They want us to work with the same people that are trying to hold us down! If you truly, truly want to help your people… now is the time to support Adam, not the Belladonnas!

The result of Adam's scheme, though, is that Blake unites the Menagerie faunus (the jungle) by her side.

At the same time, Adam takes up Sienna's mantle as High Leader by killing her. This is how Mowgli gains the other animals' respect after showing them the tiger's skin. By this point, the wolf boy has the jungle antagonize the humans, just like Adam plans a full out attack on Haven.

Both Blake and Adam become the leaders of the jungle and have it advance against their enemy, like Mowgli does. It is just that Blake becomes an inspiration out of love and trust, while Adam grows into a king through hate and violence. So, their collision becomes a clash between 2 opposite ideas of jungle (faunus).

TWO RED FLOWERS

Mowgli's duality is nothing, but humanity's double nature. He can be both a god and a demon. Similarly, people can be both heroes and monsters. This juxtaposition is well conveyed through the red flower aka fire.

On the one hand the red flower gives light and warmth:

Blake uses fire to symbolically draw Ilia into the light and force her to show her "true colors".

On the other hand fire destroys and burns:

Blake: Humans didn't do this. We did this: Faunus. We did this to ourselves.

Blake chooses light and a loving rose who is hopeful and idealistic:

Adam chooses destruction and a spiteful rose who consumes and burns:

Blake and Adam's different ideologies are well conveyed through their two war songs:

This time The ways of the past we'll get over We'll climb Enlighten a new state of mind And now I'll stand with you shoulder to shoulder Out of the ashes a new flame ignite Rise up from shadows and into the light We'll stand undivided Our futures aligned A new brotherhood This time

I'm here I'm your savior I'll be lionized I am the path to reclamation This world will have no peace til our dream's realized No mercy no compassion our fate's justified Time to turn the table on who's tyrannized

Blake sings together with others. This is a recurring motif with her musical themes. After all, she sings alongside Adam, Sun, Ghira and Yang. When it comes to "This Time", though, the use of "We" shows how much Blake's community means to her. She thinks of the faunus as her brothers and sisters ("A new brotherhood") and considers them as equals ("I'll stand with you shoulder to shoulder"). She sees her pack as a political movement made of free people, ready to fight as one.

Adam sings to others instead. He presents himself as a savior and a hero, some kind of chosen one. By doing so he shows he doesn't consider the people he is supposed to fight for as equals. Everyone is below him. This feeling gets clearly exasperated with time.

He starts his own short with this:

Adam: Now - it's time we got what we deserved.

And he ends it this way:

Adam: It's time I got what I deserved.

He goes from "We" (community/brotherhood) to "I" (individual/savior).

Basically, Blake wants equality ("It's time to save our fate and walk beside the human race"), while Adam wants a new hierarchy ("Time to turn the table on who's tyrannized"):

Blake: I never wanted this! I wanted equality! I wanted peace! Adam: What you want is impossible!

Blake thinks true freedom is realized when everyone is free and equal. Adam instead believes freedom is simply imprisoning someone else.

These two mentalities tie with the idea of fighting, which is found in both Blake and Adam's rhetoric:

No way to avoid the warfare No way to escape this strife Hear now-listen to me This time retreat Spells our final defeat We must win our life

Lead them to salvation and regain our lives Behold your flaccid leaders Too weak to take the prize Replace them with a warrior It's time we mobilize

It is interesting because Blake and Ghira are seen as pacifists and even criticized for this. Adam and Sienna instead present themselves as fighters who are not scared to spill blood. And yet, the Belladonnas are the ones asking their people to fight:

Ghira: To do this, I think the answer is clear, we must go to Haven and protect it at all costs!

Adam and the White Fang instead claim they will fight in the faunus' place:

Ilia: He (Adam) will bring about the future that you deserve. And if you are unwilling to fight, know that the White Fang will do it for you!

This is addressed in Blake's speech in Menagerie:

Blake: So why are we letting Adam do it for us?! By doing nothing and staying silent, we let others speak and act in our place. And if we're not proud of the choices they make, then we have no one to blame but ourselves. This is the message that Adam Taurus will bring to the world if no one stops him. But we can stop him! (...) I understand that to ask you to leave your homes and protect Haven Academy is asking you to put your lives at risk. But that's what's at stake.

To give up one's agency to another is the opposite of freedom. Blake wants her people to be active and to choose their destiny. Adam instead is happy with them being passive, so that he can choose in their stead. Blake inspires the faunus to take their lives in their own hands, while Adam convinces them they do not really need to. Blake truly wants people to be free. Adam instead wants people to be his subjects.

These are Blake and Adam's opposite political manifestos, which are conveyed through two different flags.

Blake's flag mixes the old White Fang's symbol with a new yellow one, as there is continuity between Blake's movement and Ghira's. At the same time, white and especially yellow are two colors linked to light:

Blake symbolically brings Adam into the light and shows his real self to the world.

Adam's flag uses a red symbol, which appears more threatening. Red is linked to blood, as his movement is way more blood-thirsty than the original White Fang:

Adam at Beacon is surrounded by destruction and red flames.

So, Blake and Adam's emblems represent the two different sides of the "red flower". One is a flame which burns gold and sheds light. The other is a flame which burns red and spills blood.

THE RED DOGS

The White Fang's red symbol brings to mind the Red Dogs. They are an aggressive group of dogs, which antagonize Mowgli's wolf pack in the second part of the story. This allusion is hinted at also by the Albain Brothers:

They are literally two red dogs and serve as Adam's most trusted allies.

In general, the short story Red Dogs describes Blake's conflict with Adam very well.

First of all, the war with the Red Dogs is in the second part of Mowgli's story and it marks a reconciliation between Mowgli and the wolf pack. Similarly, Blake and Adam's fight happens after Sienna's death and it ends with Blake mending her relationship with the faunus liberation movement.

Secondly, this story just perfectly fits Blake's plot-wise.

It opens with the arrival of a stranger. He is a lonely wolf (Won-Tolla), who has lost his family and a limb to the Red Dogs. He wants to fight the dogs for revenge, but advises the wolves to leave.

He loosely resembles a certain firecracker:

I am the golden one Who burns just like the sun Next time we meet is your disaster I'll bring the punishment Your song will be lament Revenge, my happy ever after

Luckily, Yang doesn't lose her loved ones to Adam (at least not permanently), but she still gets her arm cut and swears revenge.

Mowgli refuses to leave and urges the pack to fight. He says he is no part of the pack anymore, but that he will join the wolves for this battle. This is similar to Blake's speech to the faunus. She doesn't have to help the humans. Still, she is willing to and invites the other faunus to do the same. They shouldn't run away, but fight with pride:

Now is the time you must fight for your lives The battle is on you're already inside Don't turn back now There's nowhere to hide Nowhere to build a new world Nowhere to start anew Here. Now. Is all that we've got Ready or not There's a war to be fought Only one way through

Still, the real similarities between Kipling's story and Blake's struggle are found in her final confrontation with Adam:

Mowgli defeats the Red Dogs thanks to a well-thought plan, while Blake wins against Adam thanks to her bravery. Still, the two fights follow similar patterns.

Both Mowgli and Blake face their opponents in a forest and lead them to a rocky area above a river:

In The Jungle Book, this is where the murderous bees have their nest. Mowgli runs quickly past them and jumps in the river, where he is helped by Kaa. The dogs are instead killed by the insects and fall in the stream, which leads the survivors to the wolf pack, ready to finish them off.

In RWBY, this bridge over a river is where the bees (Blake + Yang) kill Adam:

Symbolically, bumblebee even falls into the water to show that it is in fact the bees' river.

There are also other similarities. For example, Mowgli cuts the leader of the dogs' tail and uses it to provoke the group and bait them towards the bees. Blake and Yang instead try to take away Adam's sword:

And Yang uses it to lead Adam to where Blake ambushes him.

Finally, Mowgli and the Won-Tolla kill the head of the pack together:

Sure, Won-Tolla dies, while Yang survives. Still, in both situations the emphasis is on the necessity to even the score:

You may have taken the lead but I'll even the score You won the battle you won't win the war Not now and Nevermore

Both the wolf and our golden beauty are able to pay their "blood debt" and find peace.

Kipling's story ends with Akela's death. The wolf is one of Mowgli's parental figures and his passing marks the end of the book and the beginning of Mowgli's new life. After all, he is the one who advises the boy to go back to the humans.

Similarly, Adam's death represents a new beginning for Blake, as it grants her freedom.

FREEDOM IS FINALLY HERE

Nevermore Will I be afraid Nor will I run away It's behind me Freedom is finally here

Throughout her arc, Blake grows close to several faunus, who offer different takes on freedom. It is thanks to them that our cat girl finds "her own liberation".

Initially, Blake wishes for everyone to be free and equal and yet she herself is a prisoner of her own shadows:

Blake: I joined the Academy because I knew that Huntsmen and Huntresses were regarded as the most noble warriors in the world. Always fighting for good. But I never really thought past that. When I leave the Academy, what will I - how can I undo so many years of hate?

She feels obligated to solve all of the faunus' problems on her own. Basically, she is ready to free others at the cost of chaining herself.

Adam is her opposite. He wants no limitations nor boundaries and is willing to enslave others to succeed. He starts with Blake herself:

Adam: What, do you want me to just abandon our cause? Like your parents? Blake: No! I'm not saying that! I… I don't know.

He traps her in an abusive relationship with no way out.

To escape Blake needs the help of a free spirit:

Sun alludes to the bandar-log (monkey people). They don't follow any rules, they often change their mind and they're unpredictable. This description fits our Monkey Boy to a tee. Sun is air-headed and does what he wants with no regards for rules. He is a stowaway who runs from the police and happily steals some food for him and Blake. This is similar to how Kipling's monkeys act.

It is just that in The Jungle Book these characters are framed as negative. They kidnap Mowgli and are eaten by Kaa the python. In RWBY instead, Sun is one of Blake's most trusted allies and the two of them defeat a giant snake together:

More importantly, Sun teaches Blake about freedom:

You're free to do the things you want But listen, so am I I've made my choice And now I'm making mine

Blake is free to make her own choices, but her friends are free to make theirs. She is free to leave, but Sun is free to follow her and to help her.

This mentality eventually gets through to Blake and even helps her save Ilia:

Blake: I'm going to try and help her the way you helped me. You showed me that sometimes you need to be there for a friend even when they don't want you to be. I was drowning in guilt and fear, I tried to push you away, but you didn't give up on me. And I can't give up on Ilia. It's about time I saved my friends for once.

Ilia is really the opposite of Sun. If Sun is free and believes everyone's free, then Ilia is trapped and steals others' freedom away:

Ilia says to a tied up Blake: We all have to make sacrifices for the greater good, no matter how much it hurts. (...) I was always jealous of the way you looked at him (Adam). I wanted you to look at me that way. But we can't always get what we want!

She represents the part of Blake who is a prisoner of the past. This is why Blake eventually frees her in two different ways:

Ilia: I still don't feel like I deserve the freedom you and your family granted me.

Ilia is given both physical freedom (she isn't arrested) and mental freedom (she joins a new liberation movement).

Going back to Sun, he helps Blake free herself and others. This may be why she decides to make the new symbol of the White Fang yellow (Sun's color):

Still, Sun's mentality is not perfect:

And his teammates already had plenty to hold over his head. He wondered when they were going to get over it. So what if Sun had gone off to do his own thing for a while? That was just the kind of guy he was; he had to go where he was needed. The gang had been back together for weeks now, but it still hadn’t blown over. Scarlet was acting bossier than usual, and Sage had been giving Sun the silent treatment. At least Neptune always had his back, but something seemed to be off with him, too, no matter how much he insisted that everything was fine.

Sun's refusal to apply any kind of obligations to both himself and others is healing for Blake, but it doesn't work for long term relationships. If you share a bond with someone, you have responsibilities toward them, like they do toward you. Sun has instead the tendency to run away from these kinds of duties. He is incredibly generous with Blake, but he also leaves his team with no warning.

His relationship with Blake is summarized by this line:

Blake: Be careful. Sun: No promises.

Sun isn't gonna ask Blake to make any promises. She can come and go as she pleases, but Sun himself can and will do the same:

Sun: I go where I'm needed!

This is very similar to how the bandar-log act. They do not follow the Law of the Jungle, which means they are not bounded by it. Still, this also means they can't build strong relationships with the other animals. Mowgli and his friends instead do follow the Law, which makes them truly free.

Sun is a great friend to Blake, but our cat girl's freedom isn't found in the absence of obligations. It lies instead in the choice to share a vow with a person ready to reciprocate it.

I made a vow I'm not alone Not dying now we're protecting our own

BY THE BULL THAT BOUGHT ME

Mowgli's story starts and ends with a bull. Bagheera offers the wolf pack a bull for them to accept Mowgli. This means the boy is forever in debt until another bull is sacrificed. This is why when Mowgli chooses to live with humans, Bagheera kills another bull. The panther is paying the debt, so that his friend can leave the jungle and be free.

Blake's arc starts and ends with Adam, a bull faunus. She is introduced at Adam's side and with time he becomes the main obstacle between Blake and her new life. In particular, Adam reproaches Blake for breaking her promise to him:

Adam: You know, she made a promise to me once. That she'd always be at my side. Heh, and look how well she's kept it.

Like Mowgli, Blake has still a debt to pay, which is addressed and solved in Bumbleby's fight against Adam:

Yang: Did she make that promise to you? Or to the person you were pretending to be?

Yang doesn't dismiss Blake's vow to Adam, but points out it isn't valid because Adam tricked Blake and did not reciprocate her promise. In other words, the relationship between Adam and Blake is unbalanced, which makes it unhealthy.

Blake and Yang's bond is different:

Blake: She's not protecting me, Adam. And I'm not protecting her. We're protecting each other.

It is a pact of mutual trust and love.

The metaphor is very clear. Blake's promise to Adam represents their romantic bond, which needs to be cut, so that our cat girl can start a new relationship with Yang. Bumbleby vs Adam being a chemical wedding just makes this symbolism stronger.

Blake disowns her vow with Adam and takes a new one with Yang:

Blake: I have people who actually care about me, and I promised I'd never leave them again. So I'm not dying now.

Just like Mowgli pays his debt to the jungle with the death of a bull, Blake is fred by her previous vow thanks to Adam's death. In this way, Mowgli can join the other humans in spring and Blake can start her new love story with Yang in Mistral (the Kingdom of spring):

Blake: I… I am not going to break my promise, I swear.

After Adam's fall, Blake affirms her promise to Yang once again. This is Blake's wedding vows to her golden beauty.

The end result is that Blake finds freedom and a new life full of gold and light by integrating with Yang (humanity):

At the same time, she is and will always be a faunus (a child of the jungle) and is not going to betray the spirit and ideals of her people:

Blake: A simple life wouldn’t be my life! My family, my friends, my culture. I belong to them, just as much as they belong to me. To give that all away wouldn’t be simplicity, it would be betrayal.

Just like Mowgli isn't forgetting the Law of the Jungle.

In conclusion, Blake's Jungle Book is a tale of freedom, both political and personal. Blake realizes she can't be free by imprisoning others, but also that she herself needs to be unchained to truly help people. She decides her own path as a bridge between humans and faunus and this choice itself is freedom.

Meet the Followers Part 1

Starting off with the first batch of followers in the Beyond the Shores au of mine!

Info below for each character

Collie: Collie is the yellow cat in this AU of mine and works on the farm for the cult. Collie has quite a plentiful amount of knowledge about anything vegetation and agriculture. He is quite a hard worker and enjoys the company of Leshy whenever he decides to come out of the ground after scaring his fill of the other followers. He originates from Darkwood and was rescued by "Lambert" before getting sacrificed for the bishop worshipped there, he doesn't know who was the bishop there however.

Samara: Samara, also known as Sam, is a Hyena-Tiger hybrid and was cast out from their home in Anura due to their appearance and was labelled as a freak of nature. Samara works mainly as a missionary and always comes back with the most amount of resources out of all other missionaries in the cult. She is an odd follower as she isn't much of a socialite nor does she wish to take part in any rituals that are occurring. She never worships either, and if "Lambert" tries to read her mind, they end up with blank results.

Victoria: Victoria is a hedgehog and is the best chef you can ever enjoy food from. She loves to cook but also loves to gossip about any drama or tea that is spreading around the cult. She is quite the strict and harsh woman in the kitchen and hates whenever anyone wastes food, so you better have an empty bowl before you can go back to work and worship The Lamb. She is also married to the cult's Bull, Benjamin. Victoria comes from Anchordeep and was rescued after her home was ravaged by heretics of the Bishop Kallamar.

Benjamin: Benjamin is the biggest follower out of all the mortal members of the cult. He works in the Lumberyard and is the most intimidating follower in the cult. Although he may be quiet and big, he really has a soft and cuddly heart when he opens up to any of his inner circle of friends. He always looks forward to when he can eat as to always enjoy his wife Victoria's cooking. When he lived back in Darkwood, he was the weakest of the bulls in the village and was captured by heretics because of it. Only to get taken in by The Lamb.

Franky: Franky is an albino rabbit and works in the refinery. They are a quick and hyperactive worker in the cult and one of if not the most colourful! They love to play around with their outfit and wearing the rainbow all the time. He always wanted to be more colourful like the other followers, so they started to apply colourful powders onto himself to use the fur he had as a blank canvas. They are quite the chatterbox and love to pick up any conversation with anyone, though they stay from specific followers either being scared or intimidated by them. He was rescued from Silk Cradle after almost being sacrificed by heretics of the Bishop Shamura.

Pontalo Continent AU Information

HydroWings full information (mostly based on the SeaWing wiki page)!

HydroWings, also known as sea/ocean dragons to humans (like the SeaWings) are the ancestors of the SeaWings and are a Pontalonian dragon tribe that currently live in their deepest palace Atlantis, in the waters near the (unnamed, but not a dragon continent) continent ShapeWing Queen Paradox fled to after the Great ShapeWing Genocide. Currently, they are ruled by Queen Dolphin, daugher of Paradox and Shape/HydroWing hybrid, and King Tiger Shark. They speak an ancient version of Aquatic and the Pontalonian dragon language.

The HydroWings fled to Atlantis after a BloodWing-controlled royal named Bull Shark caused The Great Royal HydroWing Massacre, the HydroWings realizing the full threat of the BloodWings. Only a few royals survived, including the current King Tiger Shark, prince at the time, who stopped Bull Shark.

Description:

Like their descendants, they are slightly shorter than the other tribes, with long, compact bodies and short legs. HydroWings have curved horns, a slender, curved snout, and two long barbels on the underside of their jaw. They can have forked or unforked tongues. They have huge webbed spines along their foreheads to the tips of their tails, as well as on their chests and backs of their legs, connected to their belly and tail. HydroWings have webbed talons with hooked claws, as well as long, powerful tails, with a fish tail that rapidly accelerates them through the water. They have gills on the sides of their necks that allow them to breathe underwater, although they can go deeper than SeaWings. HydroWings can also have darker striped/sea creature markings (like tiger shark stripes, orca, spots, etc.)

They usually have scale colors in shades of blues, greens, and grays. Although on some rare cases, purple, and pink scales, wings, or horns. Also, some HydroWings can have black spirals/stripe patterns like the SeaWing Nautilus. They usually have shades of blue or green eyes, and rarely purple.

HydroWings have glowing luminescent scales/stripes along their faces, bodies, and wings. All HydroWings have glowing spirals on the edges and starburst markings on the undersides of their wings, which royal SeaWings inherited, as they are the closest descendants to the HydroWings. However, non-royal Hydrowings have fainter markings.

HydroWing eggs are usually dark blue or green, and like SeaWing eggs, heavy, especially before they hatch.

Diet:

HydroWings eat fish, squid, whales, octopi, turtles, crabs, sea birds, clams, lobsters, sharks, dolphins, and sea snails. They can prepare soup, stew, roasted seagull, sushi, sashimi, and a variety of drinks.

Abilities:

They are able to manipulate water, have excellent night vision, gills, and can use their fish tails to create huge waves or to hit opponents. Burns and other physical wounds can be healed with ocean water, like SeaWings.

They use their bioluminescent stripes to converse underwater in an ancient form of Aquatic, as well as attract partners.

HydroWings dehydrate faster than SeaWings, and get driven mad faster, having no control over their state.

Animus magic:

Animus HydroWings are quite common, as animus blood is in the royal SeaWing bloodline. Most HydroWings don’t use their powers, and they aren’t very controlled closely, as most HydroWings are animus dragons.

Society:

HydroWings are considered intelligent and creative, and members have jobs like carving, weaving, hunting, gardening, dragonet caretaking, pearl-diving, and enlisting in the army. Writers also write scrolls.

Like the SeaWing council, there is a HydroWing council that meets regularly, consisting of the most trusted HydroWings and the remaining royals.

They can keep pets like squids, seahorses, sea dragons, cuttlefish, and turtles.

Names:

Usually they are named after shark and dolphin species, but some can be named after sea wildlife, shades of blue, gemstones, aquatic anatomies, or oceanic phenomena.

Trivia:

Compared to the SeaWings’ average 180 bioluminescent scales, Hydrowings have around 240.

They love sushi and sashimi!

They use toothpaste like the SeaWings in Darkstalker’s time.

"Melting the Ice" — (Alfie Solomons x fem!Reader)

SUMMARY — Modern!AU. Your insufferable neighbour is getting on your last nerve. You decide to give him a piece of your mind.

The bastard has done it again.

The loud music, the noises, the unmistakable sounds of a party held on a rainy Tuesday evening.

What kind of an arsehole throws a party on a Tuesday?!

The “your upstairs neighbour” kind, or so it would seem. You sighed and stubbed your cigarette out in an ornate ashtray your grandmother gave you. Antique and unusual, it was your favourite possession.

Two quarters of an hour passed and it soon became clear your quiet evening with a book would turn to nothing. The party was becoming too noisy, even for that mad bastard and his usual modus operandi. You decided to take the matters into your own hands.

As you grabbed the night robe and threw one last wistful glance at the detective story you were reading, something broke upstairs. Then a racket of girlish giggles mixed with men’s booming voices concluded the accident and someone turned up the music.

“Fuck’s sake,” you muttered under your breath and put an old cinema stub between the pages of your book as a makeshift bookmark. “I cannot believe him!”

The book, as expected, did not answer and neither did your cat, Tigerfish. He was another part of your grandmother’s inheritance, together with the flat, though while the real tiger fish, the Goliaths of the tropical waters if you will, would spent their blissful aquatic existence hunting, the feline Tigerfish preferred a quiet life of contemplation—taking advantage of your soft heart and your shared fondness for the fireplace.

Few seconds later, someone upstairs dropped a glass and then the music swelled. Cursing under your breath, you grabbed the keys and put on the first pair of shoes you had by the door.

The red pumps.

For special assignments.

Slamming your front door behind you made no difference, but it did make you feel a little better. As the elevator arrived on your floor with a preposterous ding, you decided to take it. The stairs were slippery after all and you did choose the least practical shoes for the journey.

“This the tenth floor?” the man inside the elevator asked and you shook your head before getting in and hitting the button for number ten.

Lucky bull’s eye you supposed, but you must have looked angry enough for the man to just chuckle and leave you alone. You gave him a once-over and a scoff when you noticed he was carrying a bag of ice. Undoubtedly one of the party guests and therefore your sworn enemy.

“Hm. Don’t suppose you smugglin’ a light anywhere in that outfit, luv?”

A little startled, you looked up and your eyes met the stranger’s. He was smirking at you in the most forward of ways, something you weren’t exactly expecting to see so clearly, for his beard was toeing the line between simply uncombed and downright unkempt.

“No,” you answered him sharply. “And for your information, I don’t smoke.”

“Right.”

“It’s a nasty habit.”

“That it is, yeah,” the man replied. “But it’s either that or dope, what can I say.”

“What?!”

The man shook his head as if you were the immature one and gave you another smirk. You arrived upstairs.

“Come on then,” he said and nodded at the door. “Can’t stand here all night, can we?”

To your dismay, he seemed rather amused by your tone and even opened the door for you—before you kicked it down with pure outrage alone.

The sounds of the party hit you with full force then; the laughter, the booming voices and of course the music, blasting at full force.

“Oi! Alfie!” someone shouted at you two as soon as the front door closed behind you. “Come ‘ere, meet Lizzie!”

“Right, yeah, got any light, mate?!” Alfie then yelled and suddenly the bag of ice was in your hands. “Here, luv, hold this for me, would ya?”

“You’re joking?!”

Alfie laughed at your shrill tone and stepped behind you, accidentally pushing you more towards the kitchen. Or perhaps entirely on purpose, who could even tell with a creature so impertinent.

You watched Alfie saunter towards the pair to get his cigarette lit by a short handsome man with a ridiculous haircut. Next to him stood a much taller, much more glamorous woman, and as Alfie squeezed her hand suddenly you felt very naked in your nightgown. This was supposed to be an in and out kind of thing…

“Right, ‘s a pleasure, Lizzie, really is,” Alfie said to the woman and took a long drag on his cigarette. “I’ll get back to ya, Tom. Got a situation in the kitchen, yeah?”

Tom and Lizzie looked then to where Alfie was pointing and your cheeks felt hot as soon as you realised that you were the situation. You hugged the ice closer, completely self-conscious and all of a sudden not so sure if you could berate the damn apartment owner quite as strongly as you had hoped to do. You were losing your nerve. Alfie made you lose your nerve.

“Right, I’m back now. Let me just put that away, luv,” he then said to you, the cigarette still hanging out the corner of his mouth. He outstretched his hand towards you and the gesture jolted you no less than the elevator had.

“Hm?”

“Yeah, the ice, luv, so kindly move your behind.”

“I beg your pardon?!”

“The ice. You’re meltin’ the ice.”

He pointed then to the plastic bag you were still holding and to you, completely blocking his access to the freezer doors.

“Oh,” you sighed and handed it back as if Alfie was inconveniencing you in the first place. “Fine! Now listen here. Whose party is this, exactly?”

“What?” Alfie crouched down to put the ice away and grumbled when he saw just how many bottles of vodka were stashed in the freezer. “Fuck’s sake, what a mess…”

“Whose party is this? I need to speak with him.”

“Yeah?” Another smirk, another huff on the cigarette. The smell and the audacity honestly made you crave one, too. “And why is that, hm?”

“That’s my business.”

“Right.”

“But I’m guessing you might just know who he is.”

“And why do you think so, luv?” Alfie grumbled when he stood up from down there.

You were pushed against him then by one of the partygoers who undoubtedly wanted access to the table with all the liquor.

“Oops! Sorry, Alfie!” she giggled then hysterically before bouncing off of someone else and nearly keeling over.

But Alfie didn’t really care about her. He caught you then just in time when you collided with the drunk girl. He held you by the elbow and looked into your eyes with that same expression he had in the elevator; that special blend of forward with brash on the side.

“Listen,” you said, doing everything in your power not to care about two things, specifically—how these dark blue eyes made you feel in that very moment and how bloody revealing your neckline must have been from where he stood. You had a sneaky suspicion, though, that a man like Alfie didn’t particularly mind either of your predicaments.

“I am, luv, yeah. Fully listenin’, aren’t I? I’m good at that sorta thing—”

“I need to speak to him,” you tried to command him again. “Right now.”

“You are.”

“What?”

“You’re doin’ it right now.”

You tried to get away and he let you, but not for long. He took a step forward right after you took one back; a fully choreographed dance that only one of you knew the steps to and one was doing everything in her power not to learn them.

“This isn’t funny.”

“Hm.”

There it was again. That damn smirk. You wanted to strangle him.

“I ain’t tryin’ to be, luv. But if ya want the owner of this place then you’re lookin’ right at him.”

You hit your back against the kitchen counter on the other end and Alfie winced a little, trying to see if you were hurt. He then did just about the last thing you expected him to do and when he finally stepped back and you wrapped the silk robe tighter around you, he turned around. You mistook that for some last shred of decency in the man, but then he held out a beer towards you. Not the strangest kind of peace offering one might encounter at a house party.

“Come on then, Forty A,” he said, his voice strangely low but still perfectly audible—even with the music.

You took the beer, more than a little stunned. You let Alfie open it for you but didn’t react when he clinked his against yours.

“You… You know who I am then?”

“’Course I do.” He took a swig of beer, still watching you closely. “Justice doesn’t happen every day, innit.”

“Justice?”

“’Cause there I was in the elevator, right, mindin’ my own fuckin’ business,” he took a pause to light another cigarette and to your surprise he handed it to you. You took it. “Yeah. And who else should come in but my sworn enemy, wearin’ her fuckin’ jim jams.”

You laughed at the description, because you couldn’t help it. Not when he was using a word like “jim jams”. You were just about fed up with yourself. The mad bastard was growing on you.

“You are the lousiest of neighbours, I hope you know that.” You took a drag on the cigarette then and tried to ignore Alfie’s self-assured expression as he watched you.

“You wanna get out of here?”

“But… It’s your flat.”

“So?”

You scoffed at his undeserved confidence.

“Come now, Forty A, you can trust me.”

“Oh, you just—!”

“Hm?”

“Bugger off!”

But he didn’t. And you did let him lead you to the rooftop of the building and you did let him put his jacket on your shoulders. The rooftop was by all means much quieter than the party, which you preferred, but then you wondered if Alfie took you here to push you to your death or to confess his sins. Confessions didn’t seem to interest you at the moment and fortunately Alfie wasn’t in the mood for murder.

Before you could even begin to question him how he managed to get the key to said rooftop, he kissed you. There was nothing soft about the kiss either, which you very much enjoyed. The scruff of his beard included.

You didn’t want to admit it, but the bastard did read the tension between you just right. And as he deepened the kiss and held you closer, you swore to yourself you’d berate the living daylights out of him as soon as you could.

Maybe as soon as you managed to catch your breath.

Later.

Much later.

For now, you were kissing your absolute arsehole of a neighbour and felt light as a feather in his arms. You grabbed onto his broad shoulders and coaxed one last self-assured smirk out of the man, which you promptly swiped off his face with another kiss.

Part of you hated Alfie still, but another part knew it was only because he knew how to read you. You were nothing but one of your favourite crime novels to the man and the knowledge frustrated you still. But as you two finally separated, you looked into his eyes and this time he let you take a minute. He licked his lips tentatively and didn’t smile or smirk or retort. He looked at you too and for a second you could swear a glimpse of doubt crossed his face.

“Alfie.”

“Hm.”

“You’ll need to promise not to throw any more parties on bloody Tuesdays.”

“Got your attention, didn’t I?”

Ugh!

The insufferable bastard.

But no matter. Two could play this game…

“If you promise…”

“Hmm.”

God damn him and that deep voice of his…

“If you promise, I’ll make sure to occupy your attention otherwise.”

Alfie pressed his lips together to hide his amusement. You tried to wiggle out of the embrace, suddenly back to self-consciousness. He wouldn’t let you.

“Yeah, like what?”

“What?”

“What’s the offer, luv. I ain’t the man to bargain over an empty barrel, right.”

Jesus Christ. Not only did he kiss like a gangster, he talked like one, too.

“I don’t bloody know, Scrabble?”

“Riiight…”

“I’m freezing my arse off, you insufferable bastard!”

“And whose fault is that?”

You raised one eyebrow and implied the answer. He chuckled and kissed you on the forehead as if you were the insufferable one.

“Yeah, alright. I’ll take it.”

You frowned, not trusting him in the slightest.

“Your loss really, sweetheart, ‘cause I’m a beast at Scrabble, right, my vocabulary’s—”

You weren’t exactly holding your breath to know what his vocabulary was. He had given you plenty of samples. You threw your arms around his neck and shut him up with another kiss. Alfie didn’t exactly complain.

Truth be told, you doubted you could even find Scrabble in your mess of a flat. Crime novels took obvious priority on the bookshelves.

“So I’m guessin’ you’re a sore loser,” was the first thing Alfie decided to tell you afterwards, but before you could scoff at him any further he pulled the sides of his jacket around you and buttoned it up to at least shield you somewhat from the cold.

“Come on,” he said then and you closed your mouth mid-insult. “I ain’t that bad once you get to know me, luv, I promise.”

“So you’re worse?”

Alfie laughed at that and it was the genuine kind this time—you had to admit you liked the sound of it.

“Yeah,” he admitted and brushed the flyaway hair from your face. “So how ‘bout it then?”

God damn that man… The moment he let his voice get so low and raspy again, you knew you were a goner—and all the stars above you confirmed it.
