Loved it. Left with a big smile on my face wanting to see Backstreet Boys live again. Also would like to see this musical again. As soon as Larger Than Life started I was there, ready for the ride. Brilliant performances, Juliet (Miriam-Teak Lee) gave me chills with ...Baby One More Time. Romeo (Jordan Luke Gage) was inspired. What a douche. Romeo Who? The entire cast is brilliant and if you see anywhere near as many musicals as I you will certainly recognise some of this talented bunch. The costumes were a brilliant mix of contemporary street style and Elizabethan / Shakespearean ruff which really helped straddle the Shakespeare tale with modern songs. 90’s & 00’s nostalgia in abundance where songs take on new meanings and are reworked to fit the story such as Perry’s I Kissed a girl allowing for a bi-curious and a gender non-conforming character to express emotions. The musical features so much Britney it’s epic, even slotting in my absolute fave Ms Spears song in Stronger, sadly no chair dance but we can forgive that. And of course the only Kelly Clarkson song worth featuring in a Will Shakespeare rework / reimagining of Romeo and Juliet where Juliet doesn’t commit suicide but chooses life and herself over a boy she met four days ago; Since U Been Gone was a drop of pure genius and comedy gold. Ridiculous, fun, fresh, empowering and self aware what more do you want? The fact it took on C21st ideas of gender / sexual orientation was refreshing and the audience definitely appreciated it. I’m Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman really took on a whole new facet. The fact it made reference to memes like #ItsGonnaBeMay within the storyline was hilarious too.
