ok but it's 11x19, 'tribute'

emily is being haunted, ripped from her sleep by horrible nightmares of a dying woman, a beautiful woman covered in blood. mark, her boyfriend, tries to console her but she brushes him off, doesn't want him around for this. doesn't need his comfort. can't tell him how his touch makes her cold, makes her flinch.

flash forward to the bau working on this case. emily has always been overly emotion on cases, overly involved, its nothing new. it's a trait some of them share. but something about this one is different.

jj corners her. she's gentle but firm

"emily there's something you're not telling us"

emily shakes her head, tries to shake off jj like she shook off mark. that was never going to work. jj steps into her space, puts her hands on her arms, squeezes, reassuring her that there's nothing, nothing, emily can say that will push her away, that she always has and always will trust emily with everything, up to and including her life, and she just wishes emily could do the same. emily, full of sadness, full of shame, meets her eyes. and jjs heart breaks, because she can see it there.

"you loved her" the words are a whisper of both shock and of the obvious, because of course. "you loved her and you lost her"

and emily can't hold jjs eyes for any longer. she looks away, swipes at her nose with the back of her hand, anything to distract. "yeah"

and then jj understands. or, she thinks she does. and she doesn't tell the rest of the team.

what emily doesn't tell jj is that, ever since she's been back, it's jjs face haunting her nightmares. doesn't tell jj that its her she's been running from, for four years. longer, really.

and when the case is over, emily flies back to london, back to mark. she's always been good at being whoever people want her to be. that's not about to change 45 year in.
