I've just finished making these ancient Roman inspired "laurel wreath" crowns out of jewel beetle shells and preserved 17 year cicada wings. I've done three of the jewel beetle ones, so one is in my Etsy (link in bio), the cicada wing one is one of a kind so far so I haven't listed it yet. I'm really happy with how these came out!

This year, the 13-year cicada and 17-year cicada cycles synch up in the US.
This has not happened since 1803.
There’s not a living soul who knows how loud this summer will be.
So good luck with that.

Me to my landlords, regarding the swamp that appeared in my bathtub two weeks ago: hello landlords, I think I should not have to have a swamp in my bathtub. I only have one bathroom, and it has a bog in it, which I think is not a good thing. Furthermore, there is mold growing on the top of the water (consistency of chocolate ganache) in my bathtub in my bathroom (the only one I have). Please kindly send someone to address this thing which I have been telling you about for ten or more days (hard to remember) (maybe from mold poisoning. I don't know) or give me a place to stay until you remove the biome from my living space please ☺️ if it's no trouble ☺️ thank you!
My landlords and maintenance: stupid little gay boy thinks he's too good for the bog? Little gay bitch idiot boy doesn't relish the sludge? Weak ankles homosexual. Splash around in it for a while why don't you?maybe you'll grow the fuck up.

Not account for the stasis making everything Funky, how does the lifespan of the average bug compare to the average human?
Depends on the species? Not all bugs age at the same rate, so like Cloth is technically supposed to be a cicada, but she buries herself which is something that cicada nymphs do since they spend the majority of their life underground before molting into 'adults'.
But also I see them as more of bug-like fantasy species than actual real world bugs which means I can freely pick and choose what traits to use. So an average Hallownestian beetle can live around a hundred years but can have different considerations between mental adult and physical adult phase in a bugs lifespan for species that spend most of their lives in a non-adult phase in their lifecycle. Otherwise it would really suck if you weren't considered an independent adult until the last stage of your life during the two weeks you were sexually mature.

I grew up holding a lot of bugs, I've held probably thousands of insects and spiders in my lifetime
But i was only a few years ago that at bird sat on my hand for the first time. It was just a cockatiel and idk what I was expecting bc birds have little dinosaur feet with claws but my first reaction was "this is UNCANNILY similar to having a large spider or cicada on my arm"

Real cicada wing jewelry! I just started making the clockwork wing earrings, and restocked a bunch of other cicada jewelry as well. No animals were harmed, all are made from 17 year cicadas (brood x from 2021) collected after their natural deaths.

This should be an interesting year for cicada-lovers. According to multiple sources (including the site linked here), the Spring of 2024 should see the emergence not only of 17-year cicadas (brood XIII), but also of 13-year cicadas (brood XIX). It’s rare for both broods to line up like this, occurring only once every 221 years, and last occurring in 1803.

how are we just supposed to keep going all the time? aren't you tired? I cannot just keep pushing away thoughts for the rest of my life and I certainly don't know how to face them and deconstruct them. When does me telling myself that I deserve good things actually become true?

Great news for anyone in the brown or light blue areas! You may be seeing a whole lot of cicadas in spring :)
Tumblr media
These 13 and 17-year periodical cicadas are in the genus Magicicada and will look just like those from brood X a few years ago:

Note: Some of brood XIII emerged early in 2020, so if you were in the Chicago area at the time, you may have seen some.
