Fooduary Day 6: Ice Cream Sundae
I might have gone slightly overboard with the amount of sprinkles… however she’s also adorable... so. Ice cream sundaes have a whole bunch of disputed origin stories which leaves us with a window of 1881’s claim of first invention in Wisconsin to 1892’s published advert in New York. I decided to go with 1881 because I enjoyed how the natural form era looked like an ice cream glass and the day gowns often had layers of ruffles and bows for me to work with.

You know me and yellow dresses. We have a thing.
This dress from the House of Worth has a whole lot going on. First, the sleeves are detachable so you can transform it as needed. This concept was quite popular at the time (this gown dates from 1888). It has lots of influence from the 18th century--especially with that pattern and the bodice--but employs more advanced tailoring and embellishments popular during its time.
Personally, I love the different yellows and browns and golds, all creating a luxurious narrative of silk. Since this is the Met museum, we have very little to go on in terms of specifics, but I think it's the kind of gown that just screams peak House of Worth. And it looks like something you'd see on the runway today. I especially love the train.

Silk, lace 1880s
As visits were usually paid before noon, the dress had to con- form to the norms of day ensemble: with no low décolleté or exposure of shoulders and hands. Visiting dress was always complemented with a hat and gloves.

Fooduary Day 17: Cream Puffs
Cream puffs or profiteroles, are small French pastries with a variety of possible fillings. While bread with fillings have been around in France since the 17th century, they weren’t officially choux pastry until 1870 and weren’t described as being filled with cream and glazed until 1887. Looking at both eras I found 1887 had better ruffle-shapes for my purposes.

Red velvet dress. Not to be confused with the cake. But just as yummy, yes?
I adore red velvet, and the deep crimson hue of this gown is no exception. Though it looks quite modern it's about 120 years old, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
You see, this dress had alterations. We know the original gown was from 1887, but in around 1902 the bodice and, likely, the skirt were updated to reflect the fashion of the times.
Silk velvet is just such a marvel, though. The way it absorbs light makes it hard to photograph, but when they get it right it's magical. Everything about this dress is just timeless. I especially love the contrasting taffeta on the hem!
From MFA Boston.
