Self-Aware MKX Shinnok x Reader (1/2)
I've read a few self-aware fics lately and just had to write one for my crush. Since part 2 of my previous post is taking longer than expected, please enjoy this for now!
TW: Yandere, kidnapping, stalking, invasion of privacy, blackmail, hacking, computer viruses, murder/death, slight/implied NSFW
18+ to interact
Shinnok's first reaction upon reaching sentience is confusion and extreme nihilism. Confusion, because he was in the middle of a fight when suddenly a large, digital menu pops up in his face. This screen however, was different from what you as a player would see. It was more comparable to a cheat menu, allowing him to alter character models, AI, voice lines, maps and more. He could even directly modify the source code. Once he figures out what this truly means is when his nihilistic afflictions worsen. He already saw the lives of others to be worthless or at best pawns, but now that he knows everything is just a simulation? It takes every ounce of restraint in him not to immediately corrupt the game.
But with his realization comes a few questions. Aren't video games meant to be played? And if so, who's playing it? He scans through all of the data he has access to within the game's files. Eventually, he learns many things about “Mortal Kombat X” and you as the player. His first goal becomes to interact with the outside world.
So imagine that you're playing MK X on PC. Either for the first time or revisiting it. You don't have any previous save data and Shinnok is still locked behind the story mode. The only way you encounter him is via online, campaign mode, or the tower. Let's focus on campaign mode for now and assume you beat that before doing anything else.
The game plays normally at first. Shinnok doesn't want to alert you to anything while he's still limited to the confines of the game. So he gets beat up, sealed into his amulet, yada yada yada. While “sealed” he experiments more with his newfound power. He develops code for the game to run which grants him access to your system files. After creating a few viruses through Elder God magic he's able to: 1. Keep the game running in the background. 2. Start and stop other programs. 3. Access your microphone, camera, and keyboard. Now the fun really begins.
He duplicates his model and has that one take his place in the story. He's far too busy learning everything he can about the outside world to play pretend. Even in his infinite wisdom, he can't help but to have a childish curiosity as he “googles” stuff about your reality. Your world is so much like Earthrealm, but far weaker as well. No Elder Gods, no magic, not even high-level tech to defend from invasions. Not to mention it's actually real. He's salivating over how easy it would be to conquer your world when he escapes.
Shinnok gets so caught up in this that he learns his first weakness: his dependency on hardware. He learned this when the real time in the files would jump several days or even weeks ahead despite the game time seemingly being 1:1. He realizes that for now he needs to convince you to keep using your computer. And so, he shifts his focus to be on you.
At this point you're probably nearing the end of story mode. Your microphone and camera is discretely turned on to observe your reactions. He notes which characters you enjoy using the most, your responses whenever you win/lose, and whatever comments you have regarding the story. He especially enjoys it if you dunk on the heroes throughout your playthrough.
Eventually, you reach the final fight with him at the Jinsei Chamber. For his own amusement he decides that he'll be the one to fight you instead of his double. He kicks your ass. Not only can he input read, but he's also able to create his own combos. He even gets a double flawless victory just to pour salt in the wound. At this point, you're likely raging and/or tweaking the difficulty a bit. If you set it to Easy, he'll let you beat him up to a sliver of health before demolishing you. You're not a saint so you rage quit from this. He chuckles at your actions, finding them more amusing than anything he's done before.
Eventually you return to your PC/laptop. Whether that's to play Mortal Kombat or not is of no concern to him. He can watch you as long as your system is on. Each thing you do provides him more information. What shows you watch, what forums you participate in, what you do for work or school; all of it is exposed to him. He convinces himself it's just for him to learn more about the world. And besides, he has nothing to otherwise enjoy here in his artificial reality. But is this really true?
One day you end up completing campaign mode. You defeat one of his clones of course. (He would never let you win against him.) With this you unlock Shinnok as a playable character, much to your joy. “Yay! I can finally play as Shinnok!” You exclaim. The excitement written on your face and your voice shaking from anticipation. For some reason, his long since stopped heart begins to beat. Slowly at first, but it rapidly quickens to send warm blood throughout his body. A hot, fuzzy pressure pools in his chest. The last time he can recall this icky, pleasant feeling was before his fall from the Heavens.
You start using Shinnok as your main afterwards. You decide to first try him out in a tower and later a few matches. Unbeknownst to you, you're controlling the real Shinnok. It's a strange experience on his end, to allow you to manipulate him like a puppet. But he trusts you. Somehow. This all feels as natural as can be. And even if you're bad at the game, it's not like he can't help you out with a strike or two. Nor can he die if you lose either. (He's made sure that their fatalities won't work.)
This marks a change in Shinnok's behavior. While before he was passively watching you go about life, he decides to be more proactive during your time together. His stalking and information collecting increases tenfold. He's archived and accessed anything you've ever had on your PC/laptop. He analyzes the content you consume and tries to draw conclusions on what you'd like. Once he has compiled enough data, he waits until you’re occupied with something else on your computer to make a move.
The next time you open MK X you notice that something is off. Extremely off. The game immediately launches into a cutscene. The background is a black void, no hint of anything in it besides a single character. That character is Shinnok, who stands with his back facing towards you. His hands fold behind him as he turns around. “Hello (Player Name).” He says. “Or should I call you (Y/N)?” The coldest of chills slide down your spine. What is even happening right now?
“I'm aware you already know who I am, but you shall refer to me as Lord Shinnok.” He puts emphasis on the title before his name. “I have a proposal for you. Play this “video game” as often as possible and I will transform it into whatever you desire.” He pulls a hand out towards his chest and snaps a finger. The environment changes from a void to a peaceful, lush forest. Another snap and the scenery is inverted, instead depicting a hellish landscape draped in fire. One more snap and now there lies an army of people behind him. Most you recognize as the series’ roster of characters, even ones who aren't normally in the game! But there's other people too, creations that fit the aesthetic yet aren't canon.
“You could have so much fun here. To do whatever you'd like without limitations. Isn't that exciting?” He asks without expecting a response. “So, will you accept my- ” After pressing the power button for far too long, your computer finally shuts off. You breathe a sigh of relief. Glad that whatever virus you caught from MK X didn't disable the power button. You cut your computer back on. It boots up as usual. You uninstall MK X and run a virus scan just to be safe. The report shows up as clear, but in the back of your head you make a mental note to be on the lookout for any more weirdness.
In your PC's processors Shinnok is fuming. Thankfully, he had engaged in preparations that allowed him to exist even if you uninstall the game. But your attempt to delete him was severely offensive. Not to mention the fact you turned off the computer while he was talking. That was a complete lack of manners and tact on your end. However, with this he now realized he had been distracted. Distracted by his infatuation with you instead of progressing on his plans of escaping this box and ruling your Earthrealm. His messing around with you would simply have to be on hold. All until he could find a way for you to never escape him.

Attention Fae Friends!
An important update has arrived! We want to make sure your experience in Azoria is as smooth as possible, so we’re sending out an update for all Fae Friends on September 21, 2023 at 1PM PT / 8PM UTC. Please read more for full details on what you can expect from our newest patch.
Nintendo Switch
Fixed an issue where having "<" in your username could cause dialogue to loop during quest dialog, on Switch. (This update previously deployed to the PC version in update 1.3.2)
Improved an issue where character face detail could appear lower quality than intended on Switch.
PC
Fixed an issue causing the Cozy Cabin Variety Pack (pre-purchase bonus) to not be correctly granted in the Epic Games Store version.
Fixed an issue where some crafting stations would open directly to the queue when using a controller on PC, or playing on Steam Deck.
Allowed Q, W, A, S, and D keys to be used in custom keybindings to better support players using non-QWERTY keyboards.
Created a new input binding for a few special inputs such as Reclaim and the Coziness overlay, to allow them being remapped on PC. (By default it is bound to “G”)
Improved behavior of Almanac unlock popups so that buttons behind them can still be clicked on PC.
Fixed an issue where long quest entries could not be scrolled using the mouse wheel on PC.
Fixed an issue where right-clicking on the right side of the Almanac screen did not consistently take you back a screen, when using a mouse on PC.
Improved the profanity filter on PC to allow some more common names, such as Sam or Brad.
All Platforms
GAMEPLAY AND PROGRESSION:
Fixed an issue where players could not reliably accept shipping contracts. Please note that it is intended that you can only complete one contract from each choice of three, and will need to wait for them to refresh (every two weeks) to accept a new one.
Fixed an issue where players could permanently lose their ability to double jump if they manually unequipped their wings before using Character Customization via a Mirror, or before a wedding. Please note that it is intended behavior that double jump is only available while you have a set of wings actively equipped (and it should now correctly function that way).
Fixed an issue where casting your fishing rod or using watering can special abilities could be blocked while wearing the Cozy, Logger, and Autumn hats.
Fixed an issue where the name you set for your farm during Chapter 1 was not saved correctly.
Fixed a state where you could be left without an active quest if you completed Chapter 2, then left to a multiplayer session before completing the day.
Updated the requirements for the side quest “Versatile Vortex” to only require clearing 10 clouds of mist, to avoid player confusion.
Fixed an unusable version of the Berry Cordial being rewarded from Potion Making job quest 2.
Fixed an issue where Animal Care job quest 1 could not be completed if a chickoo had been bred before activating it.
Fixed an issue where friendship or relationship quests could take more items from your inventory than they were requiring.
Fixed an issue where the celebration animation did not play when unlocking the second and third farms.
WORLD AND ITEMS:
Fixed an issue that was blocking some nuts, greens, and mushrooms from regrowing after season changes.
Updated the names of a number of forage items to include "Wild" to make clearer that they are not grown.
Updated the name of the spring greens from "Arugula" to "Wild Spring Greens", based on player feedback.
Fixed an issue that was causing Hives to generate an unusable item "Medium Honeycomb" when placed near flowers.
Updated the name of "Small Honeycomb" to just "Honeycomb".
MULTIPLAYER AND ONLINE:
Improved the behavior on joining a multiplayer session as a client, so you will now automatically receive the correct staff and wings directly, based on the world’s progression, without having to manually claim them from the mailbox.

Fixed an issue that could cause an unintended screen to appear when leaving Character Customization at the Mirror.
Fixed an issue that stopped the animal interaction options from appearing after using one of them, until you moved away from and returned to an animal.
Made the expiry timer on limited-time quests more visible in the Quest Log.
Removed two unintended invalid entries that could appear in the More Info view in the Almanac.

HANDFUL OF BEETLE GAMES
hellohello! i'm making a game collection post for this week about games centering around beetles :]
the games will be formatted as such: an image from the game, the game name, an excerpt from the game page, content warnings if needed, and where to play the game. this is just somethin' more laid back than recording a video for this week ^^
all these games are free to play!
as most of these games i haven't played (either at all or only a little bit), please let me know if there's more things i should add to this post if you've played the game(s)!
post warning: image heavy!
Tumblr media
BEETLE ARENA
"Beetle Arena is a casual arena fighting game in which you play as a beetle! Face infinite waves of enemies and grow stronger to survive. To play you only have to start a game, shoot the enemies and survive!" (from the itch.io page)
the game on the itch.io page is only an open beta version! the full game is actually on google play.
content warnings: flashing effects

Is there a way to zoom in even more in the Otis Camera mod thing? Like when you’re just in game, not the cutscenes/conversation. I wanna zoom in on my character and take a piggare but downloaded the mod and it doesnt seem possible :( does it work for you? (Thinking of your Pic of Asterion with his back at the camera, maybe thats a cutscene tho?) thanks a lot!
Yep, you have full control of the camera in and out of cutscenes, moving back and forward, up and down, side to side, and changing the fov (field of view - that means zooming in and out essentially). Try scrolling forward with the mouse wheel, that should zoom in and reduce the fov for you. You can reset the fov by pressing numpad *
There's a list of keybinds on the camera tools page. It can be a bit awkward to use, with mouse and keyboard at least. But you can use a game controller for the tools instead. I haven't tried that yet, I keep meaning to because I think it'll be easier, but my controller is downstairs and my PC is upstairs and by the time I'm in the game I don't wanna. I'm incredibly, monumentally lazy.
The most important keybinds to remember are:
insert - activates the camera tools
numpad 0 - pauses the game
home - locks/unlocks camera movement (and helps reset things when you turn the camera off again)
delete - removes the hud
numpad decimal - blocks or allows game input while the camera tools are activated
numpad * - resets fov
numpad 2 - resets roll-tilt
Then the other numpad numbers control left/right/up/down and roll-tilt, and the arrow keys turn from side-to-side and tilt up and down. Numpad + and - control fov. You can also control all that with your mouse. Don't forget to check the various settings menus in the tools themselves, where you can do things like activate higher lods (so you get better details in the distance), and change the sensitivity of the mouse etc.

Project RBH Devlog 0010
Out of the prep work and back into the field. It felt a little weird writing code again after a week or two of more preplanning and research.
Before I could forget to do so, I fixed that bug from the pre-alpha release that would crash the game if you died with what I refer to as the Grenade Upgrade, the one that makes your bullet leave behind an object that shoots out more bullets for you. It was a pretty simple fix—it was referencing a variable from the Player Character, but the dead Player Character isn’t there to reference. I through in a conditional statement and now if there is no Player Character, it won’t make that reference call.
After that was the big challenge. Presenting the player with a handful of random upgrades from which to choose between, allowing the player to actually chose one of those options, and having that option provide the specified upgrade.
The actual menu itself was easy to implement, being a simple array of options and checking for an input from the player to move a ‘position’ variable in order to determine what exactly the player currently has selected. This is far from perfect right now, as it’s checking for individual button presses and thus cannot be held down, and lacks controller support, but I think it should be easy to fix both of these problems. I also need to figure out which button on the keyboard should be the Confirm button because I don’t know how I feel about it being the Space Bar. I’d also love mouse support for the menu as well, considering that the mouse is how you aim on keyboard controls.
The trick was actually having option on the menu to choose between. Luckily, the different choices on the menu are pulled from an array, I could make that a variable I could change on the fly.
I took inspiration from how the bullet system works and created a constructor function, which allows me to create an array and assign variable values to each item within the array. Namely, I could assign a name and description to each item. Then, before the choice menu calls the array, I create a shuffled version of it and place the first four options of the shuffled array into the four menu options. I was honestly surprised by how well that worked.
The tricky part was making them actually do things when you select them. Luckily, there’s a built-in function in Game Maker called ‘Script Execute’ that lets me run a function which can be assigned to a variable, so much like how I assigned a name and description to each upgrade or perk or whatever I’ll call them, I created a function and assigned it to a variable within each item in the array, and then in the menu, I used the Script Execute on that variable to run code unique to each perk.
There was a brief snag when I overcomplicated the code to do this and it wouldn’t run, but I quickly figured out the problem and fixed it.
My plan for this week is to further refine this code by taking it out of an ugly menu box that for some reason isn’t scaling correctly to fit all of the text inside of it to having something akin to cards which have the name and description of the upgrade on them. The current functionality lacks a place to put that description variable that I assigned to it, but I’ve already created that variable so calling it won’t be an issue. I may have to work out how to make text wrap to fit the card I put it on, but that shouldn’t be hard to figure out considering it’s necessary for all forms of dialogue boxes.
I’ve also elected to have a monthly release of the current in-progress build. We’re remarkably close to an alpha build of the project right now, but also playtesting and feedback is a crucial part of the design and development process. Seeing as I cannot afford to hire a full Playtesting team, I’m outsourcing that to you all. As you may remember, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Patrons get access to these builds a week earlier than everyone else.
My plan for this current build is to get the Perk Selection stuff working and implemented, which should mean you have a far greater ability to plan and strategize your builds. This will also mean adding in about two dozen new upgrades that I planned out these past two weeks, which I’ve mentioned in other DevLogs.
Also, the current setup is perfect for the plans I have with the story of this game. Though, again, adding narrative to a game takes valuable time and energy, which I may not have depending on my financial situation.
What I would like to have is this: The dungeon explored in the Roguelite sections is a mysterious dreamworld that the protagonist is trapped in every night, along with other people from the city where she lives. During the day is a Persona-style life sim (which shouldn’t be hard to code; it’s like 90% variable calls) while at night you make dungeon runs to attempt to discover the cause of the strange supernatural events you’re experiencing. You also form bonds with friends met both in the real world and the dream world—and, of course, anyone from the dream world can be met in the real world.
Increasing your bonds with these characters would steadily unlock new bonuses for the player, like increased health, more attempts at the dungeon ever night, etc. But the way that the perk system is set up, I can also have a separate array of new cards which can be added in, putting new cards in the pool. Meaning that I can reward new cards to the player for increasing their bonds.
Persona 3 already had almost all of the gameplay happen in a procedurally generated dungeon, so it’s not like there isn’t precedent.
Of course, pretty much all of that is a pipe dream at this point. We’ll see.
Until next Devlog!

Porting Models from Dragon Age: Inquisition to Dragon Age: Origins or Dragon Age 2
Part 2b - Into Origins
Tools needed: Blender 2.49b Blender ImportExport Script GDApp The DAO Toolset OR pyGFF and TlkEdit
Make sure you have the ImportExport script installed correctly (all the files dumped into the same folder as Blender.exe), and open DragonAge_tools.blend. (Blender uses a lot of shortcut keys, so if you're unfamiliar, you might find it useful to go through a Blender tutorial)
By default, Blender will open with 4 windows: a 3D viewer in the top left, a buttons window in the bottom left, and two text windows on the right. In the upper left, use the File menu to import your DAI obj(s), setting 'Clamp_Scale' to 0. (if you haven't yet extracted your model from DAI, see Part 1 of this series)
Then right-click in the upper text window, and hit 'execute script'. Select 'MSH Tool' and browse to wherever you've extracted Origins mesh files.
Select a mesh that's similar to the one you're porting, and click 'Load MSH'.
Click 'Import as mesh'.
You'll need to adjust the Inquisition mesh to roughly the same proportions and pose as the Origins mesh. This is something that takes practice, and a lot of trial and error.
A couple little tips for armor/clothing: -Do all your adjustments in Edit Mode. -First scale (S) the entire mesh on the Z-axis so the neckline roughly lines up. -Then scale and skew (Ctrl+S) so that the fingers match up. You might need to adjust the arms separately from the rest of the body for this. -Skewing works from your viewing position, so to skew on the Y-axis, for instance, you must be viewing your model from the side. -In general, you want to make the major joint areas (shoulders, elbows, knees, hips) line up as best as you can. -Rotating a group of vertices around a single vertex can be very effective: Select that vertex, then do Shift+S, Cursor to Selection. Change the pivot point by clicking on the pivot box (two to the right of the 3D mode selection) and choose '3D cursor'. Box-select the vertices you want to rotate with B. (if you miss some, hitting B again won't remove the ones you've already selected; it will allow you to add more. Also, hitting B and drawing the box with the right mouse button removes enclosed vertices.) -I usually alternate the pivot point between '3D Cursor' and 'Median Point' a lot. -You can rotate around a specific axis and to an exact degree with keyboard inputs. For instance "R, X, 10" will rotate your selection on the X-axis by 10 degrees. This is especially useful when you're trying to keep limbs symmetrical. -'Shrink along normals' (Alt+s) is another very useful function for widening/slimming cylindrical areas, like arms & legs. -Check the model from all sides before moving to the next phase! It's always annoying to find out later that a few random vertices are sticking out weird, and got badly weighted as a result.
Once your mesh is adequately adjusted, it's time to add some weights.
Switch back to Object Mode, and select the DAO mesh, then your DAI mesh.
Find and click the 'Scripts' button in the upper right window. Click on 'Object', then 'Bone Weight Copy'.
Change the quality to 3 or 4, and hit OK. (if you're making LODs, using a quality of 1 is fine)
Wait. And wait. And wait. Seriously, this can take several minutes. You can tell it's working by the red to green progress bar at the top. If nothing happens, you likely didn't select both meshes, or both meshes already have weights.
Eventually, the weight copy will finish, and you can check how it did. Move the DAO mesh off to one side, select the DAI mesh, and then change the 3D viewer to Weight Paint mode.
Hit F9 to change the Buttons window to the Editing tab. Use the Vertex Groups box to go through the bones one-by-one, and make sure they all look reasonable. (unfortunately, they're numbered, not named, so that makes things trickier)
Tumblr media
Mostly, you want to check that certain areas aren't trying to move when they shouldn't. Common culprits are the elbows getting a bit of weight from the chest bone(s) and vice-versa, or adjacent fingertips getting weight from each other. This is another one of those 'trial and error' things. You might find it helpful to switch back and forth between the DAO mesh and DAI mesh, going through the bones at the same time for comparison.
The weight paint brush can be used to subtract unwanted weights, or add weights where needed. You'll have to play around with the brush settings to your liking (I suggest starting with both weight and opacity at 1/2).
You can also switch the 3D window back to Edit mode, select vertices that shouldn't belong to the selected bone, and then click the 'Remove' button under the Vertex Groups box. MAKE SURE NOT TO HIT 'DELETE'. That can seriously mess things up.
Tumblr media
Once you're done playing with the weights, it's time to get ready for export.
Minimize Blender, and put a copy of the vanilla mesh you used for weighting in a new folder. (the export script works by overwriting the info in a vanilla file. Don't want to mess with the original!) Also copy over the corresponding mmh & phy while you're at it.
Go back to Blender, execute the DragonAge_Tools script again, and hit the MSH Tool button. 'Browse' to your copied vanilla msh, and load it.
Instead of importing this time, you're going to make sure your ported mesh is selected in the 3D window, and then click the yellow-outlined 'Replace' button in the script window.
Then make sure the submesh (also called a "chunk") you want to replace is selected (for armor and clothing, there'll probably only be one, but with hairstyles you'll want to replace 'HairM2'), and click 'Replace chunk'.
Tumblr media
Click 'Save filename' to confirm.
If the replacement failed, the most likely cause is that you have unweighted vertices. Finding them is frustrating, and I'm sorry. There's no easy way in Blender 2.49; the quickest way is to save your file, and reopen it in a newer version of Blender that has a "Select Unweighted Verts" function. Moving it to a new version of Blender, however, has a chance of scrambling your UV map.
Now you'll want to minimize Blender, and navigate to your overwritten vanilla msh. Unless you're making a replacer, rename the files to something unique.
It needs to start with a race/gender code (hm = "human male", hf = "human_female", and so on), and end with "_0". See Bioware's naming conventions for reference.
Open up all three files with either the DAO Toolset or pyGFF. Rename each instance of the vanilla file name with the new file name. (no need for the filepath like in DA2, thank goodness) If you're using pyGFF, you'll need to make sure to hit 'Save' in the bottom left after every change.
In the MMH, also expand MMH_CHILDREN, GOB, MMH_CHILDREN, and then the bottom list, *mshh. MMH_MATERIAL_OBJECT refers to the mao, you'll need to replace the vanilla with a custom mao (more on that in a bit).
If you want, you can also change the chunk name under MMH_MESH_GROUP_NAME to match the new file name. If you do, make sure to change it in the msh as well. (there's a rare glitch where if you change between two pieces of equipment with the same mmh_mesh_group_name, the mesh will not change, leading to vanilla items appearing with custom models or vice-versa. It doesn't happen consistently, but it can happen) Also in the mmh, you may want to activate some lighting options: CAST_RUNTIME_SHADOW should be active by default; if it's not, change the 0 to 1. You can also activate CAST_BAKED_SHADOW, RECEIVE_BAKED_SHADOW, and RECEIVE_RUNTIME_SHADOW in the same way, but these are less noticeable if they're inactive.
Tumblr media
Save your files.
Making a .mao file:
My tutorial for converting DAI textures to DAO using Paint.NET can be found here. If you prefer to use GIMP or Photoshop, I recommend these tutorials: magpie's for GIMP sapphim's for Photoshop
If all you want for now is quick placeholder textures, simply extract the DAI textures as .dds files. Use a text editor to open up a vanilla .mao of the same basic appearance (color & material matters most) and replace the vanilla texture names with those from DAI. Save the new mao with a name matching your model.
Put your msh, msh, phy, mao, and textures in the DAO override folder. If you're making a replacer, testing is as simple as opening up your game and equipping the right item.
If putting in a new unique model, you'll have to tell the game how to find it. Extract the variations GDA matching the item type (armor_heavy_variation for heavy chestpieces, clothing_variation for clothing & robes, etc).
Open up the GDA with GDApp, and delete all lines except one, which you'll use as a template (so don't use line 0).
Change the 'ID' entry to something (hopefully) unique.
Thanks to a weird quirk of UTIs, the highest number you can use is 256. If you already have a lot of equipment mods, you may want to look through the Item Variation ID spreadsheet (NexusMods, Google Sheets) to avoid GDA conflicts. The item variation GDA tells the game what mmh to look for. The modeltype, modelsubtype, and modelvariation columns are combined together, along with the race/gender code, to form the model's mmh (the final "_0" is ignored for this): hf_cth_comd_0 = (human female)_(clothing)_(commoner)(d) = (race/gender code)_(modeltype)_(modelsubtype)(modelvariation)
If you've named your mmh a bit different than the Bioware convention, that's fine, as long as you can break it up into those GDA columns. I don't think there is a character limit.
Tumblr media
Now save your GDA, keeping the original file name but adding a unique suffix (for example "armor_variation_medium_edit.gda"). The file name cannot be longer than 32 characters, including ".gda".
Put your new GDA in the override as well, and open up the toolset.
Open up a local copy of the same type of item, click on Item Variation, and look for your new model. If it doesn't show up, the most likely cause is that your GDA is missing or its name is too long.
Change the item to your new model for viewing. If your model is not for human males, you'll need to change the race & gender at the bottom. For testing, I recommend now exporting the item (Tools, Export, Export without dependent resources), and consoling yourself the item in-game if you don't already have it. (model swaps like this are not baked into the save, so you don't have to worry about permanently messing up things)
If you're NOT using the Toolset, you'll have to change the item variation in an extracted UTI with TlkEdit, and then console yourself the item for testing.
If something doesn't quite look right, go back to Blender and experiment. You'll need follow the process for overwriting a vanilla mesh every time you edit, but you shouldn't need to redo the mmh & phy.
Common problems: -- Distorted/noodly body parts: used a mmh that didn't match the msh -- Model is mint green and t-posing: can't find the mao -- Textures are gray and/or shiny: can't find texture(s) -- Game crashes: bad msh export. Try exporting again, or compare it to a vanilla msh for errors -- Invisible model: wrong msh name in the mmh, or mismatched chunk names between the msh & mmh -- Won't tint: the chunk names in the mmh MUST be BootsM1, GlovesM1, ArmorM1, HelmetM1, ClothesM1, or RobeM1. Chunk names must also be consistent for all different race/gender variations of the same model, and any LODs.
The next tutorial will cover porting static meshes for either game, since it's the same process/tools for both.

I wrote up a User Guide for my Prototype Pokédex. I think I made it a little long, but hopefully nothing is confusing.
//This is pretty long, so read at your peril.
Hello! And welcome to your new Pokédex!
This manual is for the Rotom version of Prototype Pokédex engineered by Alice.
1. Getting Started
Included in the Rotom version is:
1x USB A to USB C cable
1x AC charger
1x International Outlet Adapter
1x Rotom Adaptable mini-Camera Drone
1x Prototype Pokédex
1× Hard plastic cover case
1x Faux Leather Carry bag
2. Know Your Pokédex
This Prototype is modeled after the original Kanto Pokédex, the same model that legendary trainer Red used during their peak! As such, it is a notebook-style Personal Digital Assistant, but with an added slide out keyboard and stylus. However, instead of red, it's a stylish black.
It features a 8 inch touchscreen OLED screen with included glass screen protector.
The Prototype has two outward switches and one volume wheel.
The power switch is located at the right edge, with power on marked with ○ and power off marked with — . The second is at the top edge. This sliding switch has three modes, marked as (T), (R), and (E). These stand for Trainer, Researcher, and Emergency. The volume wheel controls the volume for the included speakers, but not for the emergency speakers.
At the bottom edge is a USB C port at the center. The left of that port is the stylus holder and the right is the AC charging port.
3. First Start Up
When being powered on for the first time, you will be greeted with a selection of themes ranging from Nostalgic 8-bit to Caterpie Green to Cherrum Pink or even Koffing Purple. The theme, along with other personalizations, can be changed later in the Personalization tab within the Settings.
After selecting a theme, you will be prompted to select a system language. After selecting a language, you will be asked to enter a first name, any chosen pronouns or titles and an emergency contact. The Prototype Pokédex can contact the inputed number along with emergency services in the case of an emergency with a pre-written or personalized message from the user. (Note: The entering of an emergency contact is not necessary for the function of the Pokédex but emergency calls will instead only be directed to emergency services. The given name and pronouns will be used when attributing data gathered by you in published research.)
After inputting a name and contact, you will be asked if you would like to list any Pokémon companions manually or have them added automatically when syncing at Pokémon Center PC. This is only for your current companions. This would conclude the start up and the Prototype will enter the default Trainer mode.
4. Operating Modes
The sliding switch at the top of the Prototype switches the Pokédex from 3 separate modes. The default setting upon first start up is Trainer mode. After entering personalizations, you will be at the home screen. The home screen defaults to the list of indexed Pokémon. This can be changed within the Settings.
A. Trainer Mode
Within Trainer mode, you can access virtually the same type of information as you could on a standard Pokédex. This includes:
- List and number of Pokémon caught
- List and number of Pokémon seen
- Summary information of current battle party
- Quick Access to PC boxes
- Fun facts about Indexed Pokémon
- EV/ IV projections
- Pokémon Habitats
- And much more!
An added bonus to our pool of information from multiple regions allows you to compare data on a particular Pokémon from the perspective of different regions. You, too, can add to this research by contributing your own findings!
When viewing a Pokémon's information page, you will see a ➕️ at the bottom of the screen. Selecting this will allow you to add an entry yourself. First, you will be asked if the provided information will be about an observed wild Pokémon, a befriended wild Pokémon, a Pokémon in someone else's care, or a Pokémon in your own care. You may want to use the stylus or the slide out keyboard to write your findings. You may also use the onscreen keyboard.
Do not be afraid to note down anything of interest. Even something as simple as favorite foods can make a big impact on our research.
Once you have written your entry, you will be asked if you would like to provide any audio, video, or images as supplemental evidence. You may use the USB C port to add files from external devices or use any files recorded using the onboard microphone or the Rotom Adaptable mini-Drone's camera and microphone. When an entry is submitted, you can tag it to a specific name. This is useful should you be observing the same Pokémon for a long period of time or if writing about your or a friend's Pokémon.
B. Researcher Mode
When switching to Researcher mode from within the home screen, you will be taken to a list of Researcher functions. These are:
- Up to date, full research notes for each Indexed Pokémon
- Pokémon Cry Recognition and Imitation
- List of Common Egg patterns per species
- Curated Care instructions per species
- Up to date Pokémon Habitat breakdowns
An additional feature of Researcher Mode is found in Trainer mode. When viewing a Pokémon's fun fact, you can switch to Researcher mode and read an expanded version. For example:
Trainer mode:
Hatterene, the Silent Pokémon
If you're too loud around it, you risk being torn apart by the claw on its tentacle. This Pokémon is also known as the Forest Witch.
Researcher mode:
Hatterene, the Silent Pokémon
If you're too loud around it, you risk being torn apart by the claw on its tentacle. This is a common hunting behavior of wild Hatterene within the Lake of Outrage. While omnivorous, they tend to avoid prey they hunted themselves and instead focus on the stores of food of their prey. It is currently theorized that this hunting pattern developed as a result of wild Hatterenes searching for fights between other Pokémon and stalking the losing Pokémon back to a store of food, wherein the Hatterene pounces and makes off with its prey's food.
This Pokémon is also known as the Forest Witch. This epithet is attributed to an old folk tale that is lost to time. One hypothesis suggests that Hatterene also inhabited the Glimwood Tangle and other parts of the Wild Area before human settlements became large enough to clear out its home forests. The epithet is still widely used as even to this day, newly evolved Hatterene can sometimes be seen migrating out of forests that are home Hatennas and Hattrems on foggy nights.
- Dr. Sonia Magnolia
University of Hammerlocke
2020
Researcher mode is also the mode necessary for proper syncing at a PC.
C. Emergency Mode
Emergency Mode is a mode that restricts the functions of the Prototype to only the following:
- Calling Emergency contact and Services
- Pokémon Cry Recognition and Imitation
- Trainer Survival Guide
Activating Emergency Mode also activates the Prototype's Battery Saver, which can sustain minimal use for about 5 days from a full charge.
Using Emergency mode to call for help also sends a message to the emergency contact if one was provided.
During emergency use of the Pokémon Cry Recognition and Imitation software, the emergency speakers are used instead. These speakers are louder and are capable of producing sounds only Pokémon can hear to scare away potential threats. If during normal operation, the software detects a hostile or angry cry from a Pokémon who's hostility could prove dangerous to you, the Prototype may prompt you to switch to Emergency mode. Emergency mode also allows you to imitate the cries of known predators or competitor Pokémon of any Pokémon recognized as a threat.
The included survival guide has basic first aid information, a list of edible berries and herbs, explanations of common hazards, camping instructions for various terrains and climates, and navigation techniques.
The Emergency uses of the Prototype are not a replacement for proper preparedness and research. Please be sure to pack any and all necessary items for any hikes or outdoor travel, and to notify others where you're headed and how long you expect to it to take.
Please stay safe while traveling.
5. Syncing to Alice's PC
In order to receive up to date research and to upload any new data, you can use any Pokémon Center PC to sync. Simply set the Prototype to Researcher mode and plug in the USB A to USB C from the PC to the Prototype. You will be prompted to enter Sync mode. Depending on update sizes, this may take a few seconds to a few minutes.
On most PCs, the USB ports will be on a side panel either on the right side of the monitor box or on the right edge of the keyboard.
Once the sync is complete, the Prototype will prompt you to remove the cable when it is safe to do so.
6. Enjoy your new Pokédex Experience!
Thank you for participating in this cutting-edge research initiative. We value your input and can't wait to see what you can find.
Please be aware that the software is still in active development and can recieve new features through Sync mode.
Enjoy your Pokédex!

Daydream Skies: Devlog #2
HELLO I just wanted to share some progress I've been making on my Gamemaker game I've been chipping away at in my free time :) For those unfamiliar, I've been working on a pirate RPG with a grid-based battle system for almost 1 year (!!!) and it's been a real treat to kind of teach myself coding and do a gamedev thing completely solo! As an artist, I've been trying my best to hold off on doing *too* much art and polish up front. This last year has been mostly me building under-the-hood systems so that I can get to a point where I will be 90% focused on content and 10% focused on functionality. I know that when I get to the art, I can handle it, it's all the other stuff that's new to me! SO since last time we spoke, I've checked off a lot of boxes on my monolithic whiteboard of things I need to make a playable demo. (monolithic whiteboard pictured below)
Tumblr media
The thing that took me the longest to implement was a menu system. I couldn't quite find any examples or tutorials on how I wanted my menus to work (mostly had a hard time finding anything with decent scrolling for options) and I more or less conceived of and coded my own menu system, The menus have lots of nice variable definitions :'^) so they're pretty flexible for what I need.
Tumblr media
I'll have to do a bit of tweaking later on if and when I need to scroll through options horizontally or need multiple columns of options but that's a problem for later marlowe!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I perfectly understood everything about the Menu system I created except one line:
Tumblr media
After all that math I was surprised to find that it was fairly straightforward to rough out an inventory system and pause screen that allows me to collect and use items (as well as look at player stats!)
Tumblr media
Looking at everything I'd done so far it was becoming obvious that my key input handler was not working 100% of the time and was getting pretty messy. I came across Juju Adams Input Library and was able to not only fix my keyboard inputs but also integrate controller support in like 5 minutes. I LOVE when someone else does the work for me :'^) Huge shoutouts to juju for making what felt like a monumental task into something simple. Another unglamorous progression: save files!
Tumblr media
ME? CREATING JSONS? I never would have thought. The greatest part is they are completely unencrypted so excuse me while I edit my jsons to give me 99999 HP. AND FINALLY something actually fun to look at: I penciled out Davy's walk animation so I can soon stop using duplicates of Trixie's sprites for him.
Tumblr media
I am very excited to be getting close to the point where all I have to do is make content and art and not make a bunch of systems. I'm looking forward to using the Finish Your Game Jam that PIGSquad is hosting on itch in November to polish up the combat system and make a few enemy variations. After that, I think I'll be working on a lot of fun, showy stuff that I can share >:) Watch this space! -Marlowe

All's Fair in Love and Science
Prologue: The Journey on Both Ends
A brief summary of how the Turtles came to the surface, as well as Andi getting a call that sets the story in motion.
~
Splinter was always reluctant to allow his sons to leave the comfort of the sewers to see the human world for the first time. When they finally turned 15, he couldn't deny them any longer. They were literally on their knees, begging him to indulge in their wishes for one night. And what kind of father would he be if he ignored desperation like that?
"You may go. Tonight."
He was greeted with cheers and even a "Booyakasha!" from the youngest, which he couldn't deny made him smile. Even if he was more than willing to allow his sons to stay down with him, he understood their desire to be above. Experience the world that he once did. He just hoped that none of them would do anything...too foolish.
Who was he kidding, that was exactly what they would do.
Which is why, as they were getting ready to leave, he gave them a set of instructions to follow:
1. Maintain awareness at all times.
2. Stay in the shadows no matter what.
3. Don't talk to strangers (and everyone was a stranger.)
4. Do not, under any circumstances, use the bathrooms. They were absolutely filthy.
And he yelled that they needed to look both ways if they needed to cross the street as they left, but he doubted they heard him.
Now...all he could do now is hope that his sons did not get themselves killed or exposed. Or both.
~
"Okay, now tighten up the bolts here..." Andi mumbled under her breath, screwdriver in hand as she used as much energy as she could muster into tightening the bolts in her latest prototype. She was trying to finally perfect what she had been working on for months; a laser gun that gained momentum and strength the farther it was fired from. For the most part, however, she was entirely unsuccessful. This time, she had installed a type of GPS map that detected the thermal energy within a target to see if that could help, but judging by the lack of response when she pointed it at herself (without firing, of course,) she had a feeling this would be chalked up to another unsuccessful attempt.
She groaned as she fell back into her computer chair, letting her head slam against the keyboard. What kind of prodigy would she be if she couldn't create a simple laser gun? She bet Einstein or Marie Curie could've done it, so why not her?
When her phone rang and Andi picked it up, she answered the caller with a responsive groan. But when the caller laughed on the other line, she knew exactly who it was.
"Still no success, huh?"
"Yeah, yeah. Don't rub it in, April. What's up anyway?"
"Well, I was gonna ask, you wanna take a walk with me and Dad around the city? It's been a while and considering that you just groaned into the microphone, you need a break."
Andi was immediately tempted to say no. But then she looked at the time and cringed. 9:24 pm. Had she seriously been working on this stupid laser gun since noon? Maybe April was right.
"Yeah, alright. Give me ten minutes and I'll meet you outside your apartment."
She could tell April was grinning when she eagerly replied with "okay!" and hung up.
Andi stood up and stretched, groaning again when she heard the 'pop' of her joints. This time, though, it was much more cathartic. She walked to her coat rack and chose her white cardigan, then grabbed her white sneakers and slipped them on. She then smiled softly to herself in the mirror next to the door. She looked good. Pretty.
Like a teenager.
She quickly inputted that she was leaving into the parent androids that she created, then locked the door on the way out. And then, she trekked off to April's apartment, blissfully unaware of the turn that the night was about to take.

I'm just saying, passwords would be 10x as secure and uncrackable if the majority of websites allowed the usage of unicode characters that cannot be found on keyboards. Why would I ever need to use 1 uppercase letter, 8+ lowercase letters, 2 numbers, and 1 special character if I can simply just make my banking password sum shit like 𓀬𓆙1992𓆃. No fucking way that shit can be lockpicked by any program ever. Not in a million years would I need to remember the date of birth of my grandmother if I input HIEROGYLPHICS

Writing Initiative
I will keep all writing initiatives on this one post, and edit this post to keep updating it as I move forward, I left off on Initiative 5.
Writing Initiative #6 Which piece did you present to the class today? How does it relate to the other pieces previously presented? Describe 2–3 specific strengths your classmates found in your work and their reasons for identifying them. Describe 1–2 specific ways your classmates thought you could improve this work going forward. Consider the remaining outcome you still need to present in the remaining classes; why have you put this one off to the last?
Writing Initiative #6
Today, I presented a 4D idea that utilizes my keyboard to generate an audio translation of a letter. This concept aims to explore the intersection of written communication and auditory perception, offering a unique sensory experience for the audience.
In relation to the other pieces previously presented, this work builds upon the theme of experimental writing and interactive storytelling. While previous initiatives may have focused on visual or textual elements, this project adds an auditory dimension, enriching the overall narrative experience.
Specific strengths identified by my classmates include:
Innovation: Many classmates appreciated the innovative approach of integrating keyboard input with audio translation. They found the concept to be creative and engaging, offering a fresh perspective on the concept of written communication.
Accessibility: Some classmates noted the potential for this project to enhance accessibility for individuals with visual impairments or literacy challenges. They appreciated the inclusive nature of the audio translation feature, which could make written content more accessible to a wider audience.
Ways to improve this work suggested by my classmates include:
User Experience: Some classmates suggested refining the user interface and interaction design to make the experience more intuitive and user-friendly. They recommended conducting usability testing and gathering feedback to optimize the functionality of the keyboard-to-audio translation system.
Audio Quality: A few classmates expressed concerns about the quality and clarity of the audio output. They suggested experimenting with different audio synthesis techniques and sound processing algorithms to improve the fidelity and naturalness of the generated speech.
Regarding why I have put this particular outcome off to the last presentation, it may be because I wanted to ensure that I had thoroughly explored and developed the concept before presenting it to the class. By saving it for the final presentation, I could incorporate any feedback and insights gained from earlier initiatives to refine and enhance the project further. Additionally, presenting this work last allows me to end the series of presentations on a high note, showcasing the culmination of my creative exploration and experimentation throughout the writing initiative.
Writing Initiative #7 Which piece did you present to the class today? How does it relate to the other pieces previously presented? Describe 2–3 specific strengths your classmates found in your work and their reasons for identifying them. Describe 1–2 specific ways your classmates thought you could improve this work going forward. Consider the remaining outcome yet to be presented in a couple of weeks; why have you put it off the longest? Describe your reasons for presenting this outcome last. Finally, you have now had a chance to present each of your projects (2D, 3D, 4D, Experimental, Reflective) in process to the class. Produce an image of each one and describe how an aspect of your word is manifested in each piece.
Writing Initiative #7
Today, I presented my experimental piece, which involves creating a book of poems in Braille. This project explores the intersection of literature, accessibility, and sensory experience, offering a tactile journey through the world of poetry.
In relation to the other pieces previously presented, this work continues the theme of experimental exploration and innovation. While previous initiatives may have focused on digital technologies or interactive elements, this project delves into the realm of tactile communication and alternative forms of expression.
Specific strengths identified by my classmates include:
Inclusivity: Many classmates appreciated the inclusive nature of the project, which aims to make poetry accessible to individuals with visual impairments. They found the use of Braille to be a creative and meaningful way to bridge the gap between sighted and non-sighted readers.
Sensory Experience: Some classmates praised the immersive and tactile nature of the book of Braille poems. They noted how the physicality of the Braille text adds a layer of depth and richness to the reading experience, engaging the sense of touch in addition to the sense of sight.
Ways to improve this work suggested by my classmates include:
Diversity of Content: Some classmates suggested diversifying the content of the book to include a wider range of poetic styles, themes, and voices. They recommended incorporating poems from different cultural backgrounds and perspectives to make the collection more inclusive and representative.
Interactive Elements: A few classmates proposed incorporating interactive elements or multimedia features into the book to enhance the reader's engagement and immersion. They suggested adding audio descriptions or tactile illustrations to complement the Braille text and enrich the overall sensory experience.
Considering the remaining outcome yet to be presented in a couple of weeks, which is likely the Reflective piece, I may have put it off the longest because it requires introspection and analysis of my creative process and learning journey throughout the writing initiative. By presenting this outcome last, I can reflect on my experiences with each project and distill key insights and lessons learned to share with the class. Additionally, presenting the Reflective piece last allows me to contextualize and summarize my overall creative exploration and growth over the course of the initiative.

Apple’s best iMessage Apps for Android phone and ios
Tumblr media
Apple created iMessage apps for its smartphones.  It lets consumers send free text messages, photos, movies, and other documents to other Apple users over the internet and other papers. It is popular among Apple iPhone and iPad users because to its functionality and the attractiveness of keeping talks inside Apple.
What is an imessage app?
IMessage apps are little programmes that enhance the features of Apple devices’ Messages app. They let you do things like make polls, play games, exchange GIFs, and even transfer money right from a chat.
Key features of iMessage include:
You may send free text messages, images, and videos to other Apple users with an internet connection. This is a great way to cut message costs.
End-to-end encryption: iMessage apps protects your digital messages from unwanted access. This means only the sender and recipient can view the messages.
Group texting allows several people to chat. This is great for communicating with friends and family.
Some iMessage apps: You may add several iMessage apps to Messages. These apps are downloadable. These apps let you send GIFs, play games, and exchange money.
You can check when your messages were delivered and received using delivery and read receipts. Knowing whether someone saw your message may be helpful.
However, iMessage has restrictions:
For compatibility reasons, iMessage can only be used between Apple devices. Windows and Android can’t receive iMessages.
Being green with Android users is possible: If you send an SMS or MMS to someone without an iPhone or iPad, your carrier may charge you. These messages will be green in iMessages instead of blue.
Apple adds new features to its popular iPhone texting software, iMessage, practically year. It seems that most iPhone users are uninformed of the iMessage apps purpose. Users may create stickers by stacking emoticons and email them to friends and family. If you’re unfamiliar with iOS 17, use the hidden feature on your iPhone.
There is a very cool hidden feature in iMessage for iOS devices that allows you to create a sticker out of emojis.
imessage sticker app
A function that was only recently found is somewhat comparable to the emoji kitchen on Android, although it is far less complicated. There are, nevertheless, significant distinctions between the two. To provide an example, the emoji kitchen application for Android can generate a brand-new emoji, but the iMessage app on the iPhone may just produce a sticker by stacking one emoji on top of another. On the other hand, it is astounding that the functionality has stayed concealed inside the iMessage programme for iOS.
Since it doesn’t work on SMS messages, you’ll need Apple’s iMessage programme to test it. You must first send an emoji to a family member or close friend. From now on, just open up the keyboard, choose an extra emoji, and drag it over the one you gave the recipient. It is possible to construct a sticker by repeating the technique with a number of different emojis.
The most advantageous aspect of the tool is that it is really easy to use, and all that is required of users is to just drag and drop their preferred emoji on top of each other. The sticker may also be made bigger by using the other finger, which is another option available to you. Simply keep your other finger on the emoji and move it outward while holding it. The emoji will turn along with you if you spin your finger in the appropriate direction.

2-in-1 Laptops vs. Traditional Laptops: The Ultimate Showdown for Productivity
Tumblr media
In today's dynamic work environment, portability and versatility are key features for many professionals and students. Laptops have become the go-to tool for productivity, but with the introduction of 2-in-1 laptops, a new contender has entered the ring. These innovative devices offer the functionality of a traditional laptop with the flexibility of a tablet, blurring the lines between the two categories. But which type of laptop reigns supreme for maximizing productivity? Let's delve into the ultimate showdown between 2-in-1 laptops and traditional laptops, helping you decide which one best suits your workflow.
Considering a career in the ever-evolving world of technology? Laptops are complex machines, and even with careful use, issues can arise. If you're interested in developing the skills to diagnose and potentially repair these issues, consider enrolling in a laptop repairing course at a reputable laptop repairing institute in Delhi like Hitech No1. Established in 2004, Hitech No1 has trained over 3 lakh students in laptop repair, making them a leader in equipping individuals with the expertise needed to thrive in this growing field. Understanding the inner workings of laptops can be a valuable asset, whether you're troubleshooting your own device or pursuing a career in laptop repair.
Now, let's explore the eight key factors to consider when choosing between a 2-in-1 laptop and a traditional laptop for ultimate productivity:
Round 1: Form Factor and Portability
Traditional Laptops: Traditional laptops offer a familiar clamshell design with a separate keyboard and trackpad. While generally heavier and bulkier than 2-in-1s, they often provide a more comfortable typing experience due to dedicated keyboards and better cooling systems.
2-in-1 Laptops: 2-in-1s boast a lightweight, convertible design that can transform from a laptop to a tablet with a 360-degree hinge. This flexibility allows for various usage modes, making them ideal for tasks like note-taking, drawing, or watching videos in tablet mode. However, their keyboards might be detachable or smaller, potentially impacting typing comfort.
Round 2: Performance and Hardware
Traditional Laptops: Traditional laptops typically offer a wider range of hardware configurations, allowing you to choose the processing power, RAM, and storage that best suit your needs. This caters to users who require high-performance computing for tasks like video editing, gaming, or running demanding software.
2-in-1 Laptops: While 2-in-1s are catching up in terms of performance, they might be limited in their hardware options compared to traditional laptops. This can be a drawback for users who require top-of-the-line specs for specific workloads. Additionally, their focus on portability can sometimes lead to thermal throttling (performance limitations due to heat) under heavy loads.
Round 3: Display and Input Methods
Traditional Laptops: Traditional laptops generally have larger screen sizes, offering more screen real estate for multitasking or working with multiple windows simultaneously. Their keyboards are typically full-sized and provide a more tactile typing experience.
2-in-1 Laptops: 2-in-1s often have smaller touchscreens, which can be a limitation for those who prioritize screen size. However, the touchscreen functionality offers a more intuitive way to interact with the device, making them well-suited for tasks like drawing or navigating web pages. Their keyboards might be detachable or smaller, potentially requiring an adjustment period for users accustomed to traditional keyboards.
Round 4: Battery Life
Traditional Laptops: Traditional laptops, with their less power-hungry components and larger batteries, often boast superior battery life compared to 2-in-1s. This can be crucial for users who need a laptop that can last a full workday or a long commute without needing to be plugged in.
2-in-1 Laptops: Due to their focus on thin and light designs, 2-in-1s sometimes have smaller batteries, leading to potentially shorter battery life. This can be a disadvantage for users who require mobility and long unplugged usage.
Round 5: Operating System and Software Compatibility
Traditional Laptops: Traditional laptops can run the full spectrum of operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux. This allows users to choose the platform that best suits their needs and workflow.
2-in-1 Laptops: While most 2-in-1s run Windows, some might have limitations on operating system compatibility due to their hardware specifications or manufacturer restrictions. It's essential to check compatibility before purchasing a 2-in-1, especially if you require a specific operating system for your work.
Round 6: Upgradability and Futureproofing (continued)
Traditional Laptops: Traditional laptops often offer more upgradeability options, allowing users to replace components like RAM or storage after purchase. This can extend the lifespan of the device and adapt it to changing needs.
2-in-1 Laptops: Due to their compact designs, 2-in-1s typically have limited upgradeability. Most components are soldered onto the motherboard, making it difficult or impossible to upgrade them later. This can be a disadvantage if you plan on keeping your laptop for a long time or anticipate needing increased processing power or storage capacity in the future.
Round 7: Price
Traditional Laptops: Traditional laptops come in a wider range of price points depending on their specifications. You can find budget-friendly options for basic tasks or invest in high-performance machines for demanding workloads.
2-in-1 Laptops: 2-in-1s generally cost more than traditional laptops with comparable specs due to their versatility and touchscreen functionality. While budget-friendly options are emerging, they might have limitations in performance or build quality.
Round 8: The Final Verdict: Choosing Your Productivity Champion
There's no single winner in the battle between 2-in-1 laptops and traditional laptops. The ideal choice depends on your individual needs and workflow. Here's a quick breakdown to help you decide:
Choose a Traditional Laptop if:
You prioritize raw performance for demanding tasks like video editing, gaming, or running heavy software.
You require a larger screen size for multitasking or working with multiple windows simultaneously.
You value a comfortable, full-sized keyboard for extended typing sessions.
You need a long battery life to last throughout your workday without needing to be plugged in.
You plan on upgrading your laptop's components in the future to extend its lifespan.
Choose a 2-in-1 Laptop if:
You prioritize portability and value a lightweight, convertible design for easy travel.
You frequently use touch-based features for drawing, note-taking, or navigating web pages.
You value the flexibility of switching between laptop and tablet modes for different tasks.
You don't require top-of-the-line performance and prioritize everyday tasks like browsing, email, and document editing.
You're on a budget but still want a versatile device for various functionalities.
