I wrote a giant Raven Cycle analysis
Hi! Over the last year or so I've been working on a sort of essay about various themes in the raven cycle series, and I finally finished it a few weeks ago.
It is titled: "Why I love The Raven Cycle - An excessive analysis of the themes of friendship, queerness and growing up".
And since tumblr loves its meta (and bc I love peer validation) I've decided to start uploading it bit by bit here, making this the masterpost (if I can figure out the logistics of the linking lmao, bear with me)
(beware of spoilers up to greywaren starting at like 3b!)
Introduction
What even is the Raven Cycle?
Trust me, the characters are queer as fuck and I can prove it a) Blue Sargent b) Gansey c) Adam Parrish d) Ronan Lynch e) Noah f) Henry Cheng g) Honorary mentions
The Gangsey is a polycule
Analyzing the reoccurring themes a) Friendship b) Being a teen/growing up c) (Found) Family d) Magic (as a metaphor) e) Further themes I appreciate
Drawing a conclusion
Click here to start with the introductory parts!
1. Introduction
So here’s the thing: I love fiction almost as much as I love my friends. There’s something deeply comforting about the escapism, even if the book actually makes me want to scream and throw it on the floor (only one book has been thrown so far, I promise!).  Fiction is a healthy thing to occupy my thoughts with: headcanons! Quotes being on loop in my brain! Just fandoms!
And for me, if I am hooked on a book (series), it does not even need a good plot where a lot of things happen. In fact, I would say that my enjoyment of a book is made up of 30% plot and about 70% characters and vibes. If the characters are bland, if they do not make me feel much emotion, it likely won’t be more than 4 stars (additional info: I am way too nice rating books!). I really, really need to love the characters, to be able to relate to some aspects of them, or it just won’t become an obsession.
Since I have already started explaining that a bit, let’s look at this question: What is important to make a book special to me? 1. I need to cry reading it. 2. I have to think about it often, even weeks to months after having read it. 3. Obviously, I need to love the characters. 4. I need to be in the fandom! This can be hard with some books, but the internet is a whimsical space allowing you to find at least a small number of people who are obsessed with a work of fiction to a similar extent as you are.
Now, why am I elaborating on this so much? It’s because The Raven Cycle did all that for me. It is my favorite comfort book series at the moment, for all those aspects mentioned, but of course I cannot just leave it at that. No, I wrote a whole-ass analysis on headcanons and some of its themes. You’re welcome.
2. What even is The Raven Cycle?
The Raven Cycle is all I adore and live for (next to my friends). So, naturally, it’s a book series, specifically a four book young adult contemporary fantasy series by American author Maggie Stiefvater. The books in question are: The Raven Boys (2012), The Dream Thieves (2013), Blue Lily, Lily Blue (2014) and The Raven King (2016), and yes I will admit that the publishing dates are a bit of a red flag. There is also the very relevant follow-up series called The Dreamer Trilogy (Call Down The Hawk, Mister Impossible, Greywaren), but it’s a lot less easy to get into that here as I do not know these entire books by heart, so I’ll stick to the original tetralogy here.
To stick to red flags, the books are set in the fictional Henrietta, a rural town in non-fictional Virginia, US, in the 2010s. However, that doesn’t really say *that* much about the plot, so let me summarize that really quick, because I can do better than the official synopsis! (Or let’s pretend I can.)
Blue Sargent comes from a family of psychics, yet she does not have any powers of her own. Even worse, she is a bit of an amplifier for the others, meaning she is always somehow but never directly involved in the business. As if that isn’t enough for an identity crisis, every psychic she has ever met has told her that her kiss would kill her true love. Yikes.
But because she is that amplifier, she comes to a church watch on St. Mark’s Eve, where psychics see the spirits of those to die within the following year. It’s important business, but to her it’s really just staring into the dark. Until she does actually see a spirit: That of Gansey. Of course this is not a coincidence. No, to add to this teen’s mount of problems, there are only two reasons why a non-seer would see someone’s spirit: They are their true love, or they killed them. Or, in Blue’s case, maybe both.
The aforementioned Gansey is Henrietta’s Golden Boy, the son of politicians (read: he’s fucking loaded). He does not run with the Republicans though, he runs with dead Welsh kings, meaning he has been searching for the probably dead, presumably sleeping Welsh king Glendower (*1350; †1416; yikes) for the past like seven years. Why the fuck would he do that? Well, legend says that he will grant a wish to whoever wakes him, and our favorite PTSD-ridden guy really wants that favor.
Aiding him are fellow Aglionby students Adam Parrish, Ronan Lynch and Noah Czerny, plus Henry Cheng, though only a lot later in the series, but I really did not want to leave out that menace (affectionately) here. The paths of Blue and the boys cross because of Gansey’s search for Glendower, plus the fact that Blue works at a popular pizza place, but that’s a lot less whimsical. And, well, there’s the implication that Gansey might also be her true love, but perhaps she just kills him because of his bad fashion sense, it would be justified. Anyway, in true Famous Five fashion (Ronan is the dog; I won’t elaborate, the girls that get it, get it) they are of course not the only ones searching for the king, so it’s not completely a wholesome friend bonding activity all the way through.
Be prepared for: friendship and growing up, lots of treasure hunting, family mysteries, magical forests, illegal and slightly distasteful activities (our favorite of course), but most of all, heavily queer-coded (or even canonically queer) characters. Be Gay, Do Crime.

Hiro Hamada + Artist reader
Pairing(s): Hiro Hamada x Gn!reader (no pronouns used)
Tumblr media
He definitely asks you to draw him
Mostly to just get on your nerves but still-
He’d still want you to draw him even if it’s mostly all jokes and stuff
And if ur here reading this then ur most likely the artist of the family )
I see u
Anyway, he loves all your drawings
He’s always complimenting them and stuff
And if you’re into painting and stuff then he loves it even more
Honestly I kinda hc him as an artist too
And not like a young art prodigy way
But in a cringe 2012 tumblr art way
Just cuz he’s smart doesn’t mean he’s good at art 😭)
He mostly just draws mecha suits and his projects and stuff
He also just draws u and him with that one anime art style everyone had in the beginning of their art journey
Beautiful 😍/s
He always leaves these drawings in ur backpack/bag man
U just wanna open up ur binder or notebook? Well jumpscare cuz of the whiplash those horrendous ass drawing broski be making.
Most cursed thing ever…
U can never escape
Anyway
Going back to him wanting to be drawn
U do draw him at some point, just not w much effort
Atleast that’s the one you actually give him
And he put it in his phone case to display it😍
True romance guys
Anyway, he ended up finding out you actually draw him /srs and not /j
And bc he’s super nosey once he sees ur sketchbook he just open that shi up
So when he skips through a few pages
Low and behold those beautiful ass masterpieces
Either that or u unknowingly accidentally left a drawing of hiro behind and cass saw them
She was so proud and impressed by u that she showed hiro
Regardless of either scenario,
Hiro never thought he could be perceived as good looking but he’s not complainin
Then here comes living hell
He gets a huge ass ego and starts teasing u
Stops cuz u started ignoring him 😭
Eventually apologizes but only agrees to fully drop it if u give him one of those scrumptious drawings of him
He’s so annoying 😤(cute 🤭)
Eventually tries to casually bring it up but when u press behind his and knees and trip him randomly he knows to drop it
Embarrassing 🤭
But yea pookie bear loves your drawings
Real message sent to you by hiro, said in the third person)
Extra - def the type to draw cursed drawings of him as super buff or sum carrying u or vise versa w u as super buff and him all kawaii and shi
Timbers and shivered ✅

A/n: hope you liked :))

to celebrate 200 followers, here are some insane facts abt me
- one of my uncles was a prisoner of war during ww2, he survived and lived til like 2012
- toby fox (mr undertale) drew me a photo of frisk when i got all a's on my report card in 6th grade (drawing is lost to time but i promise it happened i think its cringe to lie on tumblr)
- when i had to get teeth removed for my braces, the doctors took out THE WRONG TEETH. my ortho was PISSED and we couldve sued for malpractice (house reference) but we didnt
- got a presidential award in like 5th grade so technically barack obama has in fact given me a gift (signed certificate + pin)
- im personal friends with 1) the guy who made the "somethiiiiings iiiin my ass" parody video of that one nirvana song in the batman movie. he also made "epic rap battles of history eminem vs ibs" and "dream im gay" 2) the guy who made that "spooky scary skeletons" dance that eventually got added to fortnite as an emote and 3) the guy who made the song monster energy gun (sansmoney on tiktok, minecrafter2011 on tiktok, and kevin kempt on spotify respectively.) if you dont use tiktok this means nothing to you im sure
- wilbur soot (😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬) rted a few of my tweets during the soothouse days, those r now deleted bc i tweeted them when i was TWELVE. wilbur is my sworn enemy now btw.
- my cousin passed away before her mother got to tell her she's adopted. said cousin also looks eerily similar to my mom. im actively choosing to not look into that.
thats all i can think of. thank u for 200!

Mystic Hands having a Bad Day™  This is a WIP (as in, not finished yet) of Mikey from #rottmnt. I wanna redo the shadow already xD
This is fanart for a Rise x TMNT 2012 fic I quite substantially enjoyed, Mystic Malfunction, written by Vanilla Vengeance on AO3. You can read it here (Actually, you are obligated to read it if you stare at this art): https://archiveofourown.org/works/44276971/chapters/111347485
~~~~~~~~
Mikey is stuck in the 2012 TMNT universe, alone and separated from his family, with the culprit behind his misfortune being none other than his own mystic powers. This is a scene from the early moments of the story, where he has just gotten himself set up in his own makeshift lair (because turtles gotta live in a sewer, duh). And yes, he is sad, sad Mikey is my spirit animal so this story connects with me.
This is my first time drawing one of the turtles, ever. I've drawn other things before but my brain has been snagged by TMNT lately so make what you will of that. I appreciate any tips on how to improve on this style by fellow rottmnt artists. I have been doing obsessive reference research and might have let go of my college exams (literally happening right now) to learn how to draw turtles! I am going to regret it later though, inspiration demands attention.
Thank you once again Vanilla Vengeance for motivating me to pick up a new art style (and my lazy ass) with your story. I will ink and color this over the weekend and hope you will see this. You have my gratitude.
I also decided to make a Tumblr blog because of this... I am not sure what that entails, I literally just started. I will use it to post my TMNT art only because that's what it started as. Any messages are appreciated and questions are appreciated. I have looked around the site and saw many other turtle artists so I will try to follow in their steps.
A comparrison from 2012, 2015 and 2023, the art is all me, I just worked my ass off to get skin rendering to the level that I’m happy with (and had to deal with epilepsy med shakeiness). I’m going to be limiting the sites I post on from now on, as I’m a bit over the accusations I’m getting on other sites. Tumblr and Instagram seem to be the only places where I have not received weird “fake” or “AI” accussations, so no changes here. I’ve been drawing since I’ve been old enough to hold a pencil, it’s one of the only things i’m any good at. And I’ve had enough.
i’ve been thinking about this for a few weeks now.
i think i’m going to take 2024 off from here. i think it’ll just be on main (i.e., my art blog nuagederose as well as feverinfeveroutfic and my healing blog theghostandthehealer will all remain active): i throw it out there every now and again (read: whenever tumblr introduces a garbage new feature), but i really think i’m going to commit to it.
i hate the overall attitude on here now, people on here acting like they’re better than everyone who doesn’t have a tumblr, you and your precious ~mutuals~. i remember the rampant irony about it all around here in 2013-2015, but everyone is so deadly serious now and it honestly sucks, like… give me something fun, anything, PLEASE. y’all are KILLING ME. and… you know. i’m not jewish. but the antisemitism around here is honestly flooring to me—it’s kind of what i get for lurking around jumblr, but it’s interesting to see what we non-jews don’t: it makes you go, “oh. OH. really? well, i’ll be damned, i’ll take your word for it, unknown friend.” in my opinion, after reading about israel and palestine some 6 or 7 times, you can’t be like “happy hanukkah” and then turn around and say you want to see israel destroyed, like… no. say “it’s complex and nuanced” all you want, it not only doesn’t make it any more true, but… if you ask me, it actually isn’t. i don’t want to be around a place filled with people who talk out of both sides of their mouths, be it about the jews, the palestinians, ukraine, animals, art, or really… anything. the takes on here honestly suck, like there’s no substance to any discussion and i can’t tell you the last time i saw a take that really made me think. and worse? none of it would be half as bad if no one prided themselves in this. why do you think we’re failing as a society (aside from everything around us failing as well)? i’m surrounded by idiots—mean idiots, too, like so many of you are almost bullies about it—and you guys are doing bupkis to save yourselves.
i can’t go through any tag anymore without seeing stranger things (which i kind of hate now), our flag means death (which i LOVE, but i’ll see it in a tag about autumn and i’m like why), good omens (which i don’t get the appeal of), or supernatural (which… i’m sorry. i have never understood the appeal of this show—whereas i adore sherlock and doctor who, so rest your sphincters, ghosts of superwholock). the only tags that don’t have those four are the lower tier thrash tags, any tags about food or baking, and pokemon if you can believe that: seriously, not even the cartoon tags are safe. the thrash tags are quieter than a graveyard, i have no idea what to do with food porn, and fuuuuck, it’s been a while, pokemon, should we catch up? it’s exhausting.
kinktober this year killed kinktober for me. congrats, nickybloodhead, i hope you’re satisfied with yourself as everyone has inexplicably kissed your ass and disregarded someone who’s actually kinky and made her feel so terrible about herself that she deleted her collection and wrote a horror story instead. i hope you’re happy, you now have blood on your hands.
my weight loss is bringing forth some really intense feelings (look no further than goretober; i made those drawings right as i was starting to lose), and i’ve said this before, too: i know i’m not welcome here or on ao3, anyway. i know no one likes me. i’ll just finish my wips and go, and you won’t ever have to see me again.
i have no idea what 2024 holds, anyway—and i’m a little wary of leap years now, especially after the last three have been particularly brutal. 2020, the infamous year of disease, fire, riots, and a boring white girl who clowned me and pretty much killed my career; 2016 was one loss after another and the never-ending election cycle hyped to the moon that did not end well; and 2012 was just a lonely year for me. 2024 could be the year that finally takes me out for all i know.
so… i think it’s just best to be away from the main channel and stay down low for the year. i’ll still be on instagram (badmotorartist) and *gasp* threads (badmotorartist as well), and like i said, the side blogs will be active still.
If you get this, answer with 3 random facts about yourself and send it to the last 7 blogs in your notifications, anonymously or not!
i just got so emotional over old ask chains bc of this, god you remember those days????? in 2012-2016 when this was a thing all the time and people had so much fun learning about one another and making friends??? i just happened to be looking at tags on my ollllllld second blog right before seeing this too. that feels a bit serendipitous, dont you think? :')
instead of just "3 random facts" i think i'll use this ask as a springboard prompt for a brief history of my time here on this website, since a lot of folks are returning and it might be nice to come out and see what some of my old lost chums might be up to now.
In mid-2011 i joined tumblr because i realized all my favorite dA artists were posting on dA less and on here more. I didn't do much here until i encountered a piece of fanart of a character from a certain webcomic, got curious about that comic, enjoyed it, and discovered that there was a big community on tumblr who liked it! my first ever URL was.... man i don't really remember! Maybe something reflecting my dA name at the time? But i don't remember what that was then either, having deleted that account ages ago. but i think my second one was "gamzeecryingalonewithpie" or something to that effect because the "laughing alone with salad" stock photo meme was big. It was so silly.
Eventually i trended into making all my urls/handles some sort of pun having to do with death, and some years ago i settled on my current url for a twitter handle because it really hit me in a place. My best friend and currently roommate @mossspores came up with it!
Anyhow, i basically spent all my time on tumblr being comparatively insufferable from 2011 to about 2017 before i migrated the majority of it to twitter. At the moment, I actually keep looking at all my archived posts from my old blog trying to find some old OC stuff and being ridiculously embarrassed at how silly (ignorant? abrasive? entitled?) my young self was. I'm not certain about sharing my olllllld URLs besides the one from before, but probably my most famous one was "ammodramus"--I was bestowed the nickname "Ammo" for the longest time and probably gained the most followers during the run of that one. I think the most followers i ever got up to was somewhere around 700 on my first blog and close to 1,800 on my second one. (funny now, i've had this particular blog probably the longest out of the three and barely have over 100. i like this better, though.)
Now for the BIGGEST thing i was part of....i was really into the whole once-ler fandom craze. yeah. i was there on the ground floor, and basically became one of the biggest enablers of the ask-blog phenomenon. i even tried really hard to make my own of the "personification" blogs eventually, but it fell down flat because i was in a dark place mentally on the side while also dealing with the gradual degradation of my physical ability to draw (aka painful arthritis). But i had the most fun i had ever had online before in the thick of it. i made toooons of friends and i even still keep in touch with a few of them. There were a lot of mistakes and upsetting blunders made by myself and a lot of people i knew, but these days i think i'm generally okay outing myself as having been a part of it. i mean, it's been ten goddamn years since that kicked off after all. lmfao. i was also an ignorant teenager.
Now you'll just see me skulking about on here vaguely while reblogging posts in short bursts because i still never took to figuring out how queuing posts works best. For a long-ass time i had a tagging system i took VERY seriously and trigger-tagged religiously. when i remade to my third and current blog, i gave that up and BOY did my mental health suddenly improve or WHAT. i realized i'd been absolutely running myself ragged with caring about appearances and making sure as often as possible to upset NO ONE with my posts. Basically, the way that simply analyzing every single post i shared and making sure to cover ALL my bases to make sure no one felt irked by my sharing of a post, was, uh. To put it mildly, fucking exhausting. And i posted A LOT. I can guarantee i had to have cumulatively reblogged nearly half a million posts between those two accounts. Last i checked on just my second blog, the pages went back into the 10,000s.
so yeah! hi to anyone who read through this whole thing who i knew way back when! I'm doing much better than i used to be, thanks to a lot of therapy and medication. i made it out of the house i grew up in, even the State i grew up in, and feel a lot less like i'm gonna die before 30! :') i've been chilling, playing final fantasy xiv, and eating lots of rice and vegetables. o/
thanks for the ask! <3
Homestuck crash course
In the mid to late 2000s a guy on the internet thought it would be fun to play a game with the forum he was in; he would draw an initial scenario and people would respond with What To Do and he would draw the result / explain with arbitrary game rules why they cannot Do That Thing. These came to be called MS Paint Adventures. Collected as the drawn results with links stating The Command, the whole thing kinda sorta looked like a webcomic with a specific narrative style, and eventually they were collected together on a website, mspaintadventures. The first one to actually be completed before being abandoned, and one of the best, was Problem Sleuth. It was about hard-boiled detectives, imagination, and fighting all sorts of weird beings. In April of 2009, Problem Sleuth was finishing up and the guy who did these began a new Adventure, about four kids who play a video game that has Extremely important consequences beyond our entire universe. While there were still some reader-submitted commands, this one was more plot-heavy and the author took more control of the narrative he wanted to tell, eventually outright closing the suggestion box but continuing to write the story in this Text Adventure Narration style. That new mspaintadventure became famous for its many characters, memes, distinctive speech, and multimedia usage. It was mostly still images and text, but there was also gif animations, clickable links, videos with sound, and whole-ass Flash Games. The adventure had highly-interesting game mechanics, as did the game the kids were playing, and something about the whole thing was a sort of perfect storm for Tumblr culture. Coupled with a really fast update schedule, and a huge wide open field of possibility for Canon and fic-writing it wasn't hard to see why fandom exploded. Yes, this was Homestuck. The webcomic itself ended in 2016, though a lot of its plot and hype happened in the first 2-3 years, which is why the fandom's heyday is more around the early 2010s and peaked in 2012-2013. TvTropes has more details but really that's the gist of "What Is Homestuck." For a lot of people it was Baby's First Serious Fandom; first time cosplayers, fic-writers, and musicians. Toby Fox's teenage and early adult years were spent in this fandom, including when he first reused Megalovania several years before Undertale. It was huge for early Tumblr and very intertwined with people's memory of cringe. It starts slow and gets Big and Confusing, fast. That's why attempts to Google it or asking someone who's read the whole thing could be overwhelming. There's a sort of Tumblr culture of refusing to explain because it's So Much (And I'll admit it's very funny when people are completely baffled as to what it could be) but you did literally ask for someone to explain so here you go
Thank you very much anon!
All I'd been able to gather previously us that it was a webcomic, and while that is true, your explanation is far more helpful in understanding why it was Like That. I very much appreciate the detailed backstory!
Best Friends Masterlist
50 notes to unbox (ao3) - dylaesthetics
never quite as it seems (ao3) - Ablissa
Summary: Phil has a unique gift that allows him to see something he never expected to see - his best friend Dan, meeting the person that would most likely become the love of his life. It hasn't happened yet, and right now, Dan has no idea what lies ahead.
When old feelings resurface and every choice may have a big impact on the upcoming events, will Phil be able to make the right decision?
Stars in His Eyes (ao3) - harleymoony
Summary: Once every week, Dan and Phil sneak out of their houses to go stargazing together. Tonight is Dan’s birthday, and Phil has something planned for that, of course.
The Idea of Us (ao3) - churchboy
Summary: OR.. "The five times Phil shut down the idea of a relationship and the one time he didn't."
The Road To Being Okay (ao3) - WaterHorseyBlues
Summary: All Phil wanted was for Dan to be okay.
Watching You, Watching Me (ao3) - Spring_Haze
Summary: Dan accidentally discovers his best friend and roommate pleasuring himself in the early hours of the morning and can't look away. In fact, he can't keep his hands off of himself. Phil is surprised by Dan's reaction, and two best friends make long-time confessions.
you only know you love him when you let him go (ao3) - orphan_account
Summary: Dan was sitting on his beanbag chair and nodding along to Phil’s story, tossing a ball into the air as he stared at his best friend.
While Phil continued describing how pretty Amanda looked and how amazing the movie was, Dan was focused on Phil himself. He let his eyes roam over Phil’s face, catching on shiny irises and sharp cheekbones and pink lips, and thinking of how much he’d love to feel those lips against his own.
And suddenly, everything made sense to Dan.
He froze, the ball falling on his head as his chest filled with terror. Phil continued with his story, delightfully oblivious to the panic attack Dan was two seconds away from having. He was attracted to his best friend, and big time, too, but Phil now had a girlfriend, and one he’d been wanting for over two years.
Well, fuck.
You're All my Reasons (ao3) - QueenKatelynTheAristocrat
Summary: "Phil wished he could think of the right thing to say. It would be nice if at times like this his English Language degree knowledge would kick in and provide him with the words to make Dan understand that he could tell Phil anything, that there was nothing he could say that would scare Phil away, but alas."
In which Dan's depression doesn't allow him to leave his room for two days, and Phil struggles to find the words, but what comes to realize is that maybe words aren't always necessary.
since I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately and I feel inspired by that old school tumblr lore post here’s some 2011/2012 portal fandom tumblr lore that is now somewhat incomprehensible and forgotten in this day and age:
Wheatley “hug line” (everybody drew a human Wheatley posing to hug the viewer)
wheatley fanart exchange
smerch giraffes (draw Stephen merchant as a giraffe)
”smerchettes” (not going to explain this one)
the entire LJ kink meme/the fact that it’s basically how portal developed a huge online fandom in the first place
”giant (human) Wheatley” comics with various fandom member’s “Wheatley designs”
Blanket Wheatley meme (draw Wheatley designs cuddling blankets)
Onceler fandom stealing the human Wheatley fanbase
”Wheatleycest” was extremely popular and very much predated Oncest and how it partially came about due to the popularity of askblogs being shipped together
the fact that all of this lore is Wheatley-based because that was the climate back then on tumblr and there wasn’t much for the other characters because human Wheatley dominated the tumblr fanbase so you saw it whether you liked human Wheatley or not
that time they named a star after Wheatley and it was a big deal for some reason
Fruital (draw the portal characters as fruits)
the mantis men fanfiction
the fanfic exchange
Blue Sky craze
people self-shipping with Stephen Merchant (no comment)
awkward audio clips of Wheatley’s infamous chapter 8 dialogue with edited in cheesy porno music
the attempted revival of the portal kink meme on dreamwidth
the Wheatley Wars
“lost to time” my ass I bear witnessed this and if I have to remember it bc it’s permanently burned into my psyche so do you 2011/2012 tumblr was a wild ride my friends
Thots on smerch in 2012 😈
oh god. don't remind me.. the origins of tumblr sexyman syndrome lie here, in wheatley the idiot orb TM. also my cringe ass nae nae days of 2012 drawing 300 different versions of the same skinny white dude either being a dick and or jerking it in a thinly veiled allusion to testing lie here and we arent going back to that. EVER
if oyu knew me back then no you didnt
and then people also wanted to fuck the voice actor because he looked exactly like the stock standard white man TM tumblr would later on focus on as their main source of tumblrsexyman-ness. i guess him being a brit helped that situation? there was lot of arguments about whether skinny white bitch whatley was a valid interpretation of his character and whether anything but drawing the og orb was a good thing or a bad thing and conversion gel and UGH
my thoughts on the situation boil down to something like, well, 2012 tumblr was a wild west of websides moreso than anything else and frankly anyone who claims that a character and or concept is a tumblr sexyman needs to go through a plinko machine made up entirely of wheatley humanisations based on some random british dude from 2012.
Disinterpretation
I finally finished the Sarah Z video about “pro vs. anti”.   It’s pretty long, and I ended up watching it in chunks over several days, but I think it’s worth watching, especially if you’re sort of partially connected to online fandom, but not enough to be aware of all the lingo.
As I expected, the whole thing was vague and confusing because the people involved in the conflict made it vague and confusing.   In theory, the full terms would be “pro-shipping” and “anti-shipping”, but it seems like it’s more about particular kinds of ships that could be considered controversial.  But that’s a slippery slope, and apparently the whole conflict mutated into both sides deciding that every hypothetical relationship between fictional characters is either equally valid or equally dangerous.
Long story short, it’s just purity culture, which was what everyone on Tumblr was calling it around 2012.  But now, if you’re a sane person who genuinely asks: “Who gives a fuck about Voltron?”, these people will jump your ass and accuse you of being on the side of their enemies.  “Children have died over the importance of Lotor/Hagger!   Your callous indifference proves that you yourself must have murdered children!”
I think what Sarah Z really hit upon in this video was that media consumption has become so ingrained in our culture that people feel like it has to go hand-in-hand with our morality.   That is, it’s not enough for me to watch Star Trek, I have to justify Star Trek as evidence that I’m a good person.  Maybe this is where the expression “guilty pleasure” comes from.   Conversely, it’s not enough for me to not watch Dr. Who, I have to somehow convince everyone that Dr. Who was invented by the devil.
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure the Reylo ship has a lot to do with this, since it’s kind of understood to be a dark, problematic concept, and fans either embrace its flaws or recoil in horror because of them.   Star Wars itself is a dumb story about space wizards, so people try to give the debate more weight by linking it to freedom of self expression and/or enabling real world harm.   Suddenly it’s not enough to just think two actors would look cute making out instead of fighting.   Now it’s this battlefield for the soul of civilization or something.
Tumblr media
I grew up in the 80′s, when “concerned parents” and grifters would accuse the Smurfs and metal bands of promoting satanism and witchcraft.   I used to hear stories of teens going out into the woods in the middle of the night to do occult stuff, and all I could ever think about was: “Why would anyone bother wandering out in the woods in the middle of the night?”  Which is why “concerned parents” turned their attention to things that were closer to home, like Saturday morning cartoons.   It had nothing to do with the content; it was just about finding a safe, accessible target for their hysteria.   Some people want to go on a crusade without leaving the house, so they pick a fight with Papa Smurf instead of confronting the real evils in the world.  Even as a kid, I knew this was a con, because I’d watched the show for myself and knew it was too saccharine to be threat to anyone.
The pro/anti folks have tried to disguise this with a lot of terminology.   I wondered why they seemed to reluctant to use the full terms “pro-shipper” and “anti-shipper”, and it’s probably a couple of things.   First, the word “shipper” is basically an admission that this is pointless bullshit that doesn’t matter, and they’d like to avoid that connotation.   Second, they seem to have decided that this goes beyond shipping itself, into practically anything else they want it to involve.  It’s all part of the con, which is to make you believe that it’s “us vs. them”, and you can be part of “us” by curating specific attitudes about Steven Universe.
Seriously, “about Steven Universe” is such an incredible punchline.  You can make anything funnier by adding those three words to the end of a sentence.   “Do not interact if you blog about Steven Universe.”   “Hey, what’s up, YouTube, this is SSJ3RyokoLover69, and this is going to be kind of a serious video about Steven Universe.”   “Mrs. Johnson, the results of your biopsy are in, and I have some bad news about Steven Universe.”   It’s a fucking kids show.   “Oh no, all the characters look like the characters in all the other kids shows!”   Yeah, that’s because it’s a kids show.   Marvin looks like Garfield, this isn’t new.
The common denominator here seems to be that both sides try to wrap themselves in the flag of vulnerable groups: impressionable minors, trauma survivors, harassment victims, etc.   The “pros” want to protect those people so that they can feel free to explore weird subject matter on their own terms, and the “antis” want to protect the same people from being exposed to weird subject matter that they might not want to see.   It’s all about establishing a moral high ground.   Back in the day, it was called “sanctimony”.
But people get roped into this, because at their core, people want approval, and this stupid conflict offers them a sense of community.  As long as you support the cause, whatever it may be, you’ll have this online friend network that appears to support anything you do.   But if you deviate from their norm, you’ll be cast out.    Does this sound familiar?
Tumblr media
To use a more familiar example, I still sometimes find people clamoring about Gochi vs. Vegebul.   I’ve never understood this, because both ships were canon, and I never saw much direct evidence of a war between them, but people would still talk about how crazy the Vegebul shippers were, and how crazy the Gochi shippers were, and it was like some huge thing going on just over the hills.   It’s the same idea, since the idea that you could like both or neither never seems to occur to anyone involved.   I never gave a shit, because I used to see the same dumb agendas in the Harry Potter fandom.
Okay, so let me take you back.  It’s 2005 through 2011, and I’m hateblogging all seven Harry Potter novels, because fuck you, that’s why.  The funny thing I encountered was that occasionally fans seemed to want to pretend like my bashing of certain characters was proving them right somehow.    They were like “See?  He hates Ron Weasley too!  That proves that Seamus Finnegan is the coolest guy ever.”   The Slytherin stans would do this all the time, because I would constantly take the piss out of the Gryffindor characters for being self-important dopes.   I think they just liked hearing it from an outside perspective.   But I had to keep reminding them all that I hated all of them.   Every character from Harry Potter sucks ass. Voldemort was my favorite, but only because he was the one guy who wanted to kill all of the others.   But he sucks too because he failed.
And the shippers were the same way.   I’d say something shitty about Ron, because Ron sucks, and some smartass Joss Whedon fan would be like “Yes!  Boost the signal!  That is why Harry/Hermione is the best ship!”  And I’d be like “No, Harry and Hermione suck at least as bad as Ron does.  They’re all terrible and I hate them.”   I really do think there was some sort of Stockholm Syndrome going on with Harry Potter books, where everyone secretly knows they suck, but the fans sort of latch on to one or two characters and go like “Well, he’s not as shitty as the rest.”   Like finding spaghetti in the trash and picking out the meatball with the least amount of lint on it.   Then you’d go and start a flamewar with some other starving person over whether your meatball is shittier than theirs.  This is what people mean when they say to read another book.
Anyway, the big thing I picked up from Sarah Z’s video is “disinterpretation”, a term coined by MSNBC columnis Zeeshan Aleem.   The Twitter thread is worth a read, but the short version is that he once remarked that a Julia Louis-Dreyfus routine wasn’t very good, and someone got mad at him for insinuating that women are incapable of being funny.    They just took his dissatisfaction with one performance by one comedian as being a universal condemnation of women comedians in general.  And this sort of thing is all over the internet.   Everyone sees what they want to see and then they take it as permission to overreact.
I ran into this myself a while back, because someone saw who I interacted with on Twitter and decided that they’re all bad guys and if I have any interaction with them, then that makes me a bad guy too.   At the time I tried to play it cool, but the more I think about it, the more it ticks me off.   And over the course of that conversation, it was said that I don’t talk about myself much, and that’s kind of funny, because all I ever do on social media is write long-ass blog posts like this one.  I don’t expect anyone to memorize them, or even read them all the way through, but when I write all this stuff and someone goes out of their way to say they don’t know anything about me, the message is that they just didn’t pay attention to what I was saying, and they didn’t bother to try.
So I’m a little jaded from that, because I got called out for a bunch of stuff I didn’t even do or say, and apparently that’s just a thing that happens.   People will reject you for completely arbitrary reasons, not because of anything you actually said or did, and you’re left thinking you made some terrible mistake.   Except, no, I’ve seen it happen to other people, people a lore more conscientious than I am, and if they can’t satisfy the bullshit purity standards, then I never stood a chance.   If the game is rigged so I can’t win, then I’m not going to play.
And it’s that same condition that probably draws people into these online holy wars, because if you declare yourself for the pro or anti side, at least then you’ll have a posse backing you up.   Only they don’t support you, they support your willingness to support them.    Once your commitment to their agenda wavers, even in the slightest, they will turn against you.
Sarah Z suggests that both sides of the war drop the pro and anti terms, since they lost all meaning long ago.   But that just invites a new set of useless terms to perpetuate the same cycle.   Her more useful advice is for fandom people to broaden their horizons.   She got a lot of flak for tweeting “Go outside” once, but the ironic thing is that it’s sound advice.   I had lunch with my mom yesterday and it was just nice getting away from things for a while.   People need to do that more often, and unfortunately it feels like it’s harder to do than ever before.
But “go outside” isn’t just a literal thing.   It can mean going beyond your usual haunts, reading the same books, watching the same shows, rehashing the same conversations.   I think the reason this stuff always revolves around “shipping” is because there seems to be this deep-seated compulsion to pair fictional characters off like this, and for a lot of folks it’s the only way they can consume a story, so they do.   And they do it lot, and there’s a lot of them, and they do it the same way every time, and lo and behold the same old conflicts start up.   So maybe “go outside” should mean “go outside of that cycle once in a while.”   Just a thought.
