[I got this article from a post I reblogged from tumblr user meret118]
It's written from the perspective of a teacher who has noticed an overreliance on technology in general (specifically AI like ChatGPT and Grammarly) to complete writing assignments. The author goes to explain that writing as a skill is akin to thinking as a skill. These writing assignments, when completed as intended, help students learn to generate thoughts and ideas on their own. This is a necessary skill that aids them in their communication and enables them to make more well-informed decisions as they age.
"As a society, we’re not talking enough about what the long-term effects will be for our kids and what it will mean for an entire generation of students to sail through school and not learn the basic rudimentary skills that are designed to teach them how to think and problem-solve on their own."
With the rapid increase of ads and the push from algorithms to make shorter and more clickable content, social media's adverse effects are much worse than they were before.
"My [students] are constantly inundated with carefully curated messages that encourage them to be passive consumers in the classroom"
I also want to note that this person teaches high school and higher education. It isn't just young children and teens who are falling behind, it's adults too.
"And we’re not listening to the educators who are concerned. Seventy-two percent of college professors who said they’re aware of Chat GPT [and] are concerned about its impact on cheating, but many of us don’t know what to do about it and don’t have the support we need to push back against it. Meanwhile, educational institutions continue to uncritically embrace AI, moving at lightning speed to bring it into classrooms without thinking through its dangers, limitations and consequences. AI wasn’t designed for schools, yet we continue to operate as though it was."
If things don't change, who knows what the future of education, let alone the future of our society, will look like.
"If you believe, as I do, that writing is thinking — and thinking is everything — things aren’t looking too good for our students or for the educators trying to teach them"
I also want to point out a critically missing skill among students these days is the ability to save a document with an identifiable name in a retrievable location.
This sounds like it should be a non-issue, but this is a skill that is not being taught that is really screwing students over down the road. You need to keep digital copies off your own documents on a device you own. Overreliance on Autosave in general is keeping people from being able to use word processors in the very basic ways.
I frequently hear from students who have lost their own work because they did not know where it was saved and could not retrieve it again. You need to keep copies of your own work no matter what you're doing.

Have you played FIELD GUIDE TO MEMORY ?
By Jeeyon Shim and Shing Yin Khor

Field Guide to Memory is a connected path game about legacy, wonder, cryptids and the vastness of a human life, designed by Jeeyon Shim and Shing Yin Khor.
Your mentor, the beloved and illustrious cryptid researcher Dr. Elizabeth Lee, has been officially declared dead five years after she went missing in the field. You will end the game with a physical artifact you've created yourself - your journal - in collaboration with us: your own field notes and documentation of your relationship with Dr. Lee. You will continue her legacy.
