2023 BOBABOARD GOALS (PART 1)
Today, let's go over the first set of challenges coming up for us in 2023!
🚀Outlining our principles for our main Galaxy
Realms are independent communities within BobaBoard, while Galaxies are collections of Realms hosted on the same server. Think of Realms as communities using the same top-level web domain (like bobaboard.com) which in turn marks the Galaxy they belong to!
Galaxy owners control onboarding for Realms in their Galaxy, and the common set of policies for those communities. As the owners of the first "official" Galaxy, 2023 will see us chart the way forward and define the structures for community-building and moderation on our platform.
🚀Finding skilled community leaders to launch new Realms
Later this year we will begin looking for new Realm owners to bring on board. But before that can happen, we're recruiting people with experience in (fandom) community management to join us as policy advisors. If interested, you can sign up using this form.
🚀Refine our Realms onboarding process
With help of our new allies, we will be able to refine the structures needed for community-building and moderation. Then we will plan how to bring Realms to new users!
Carefully considering the culture of our spaces is fundamental to our mission, even if it means a slower rollout of services. With everything going on in the online world it's SO temping to rush forward, but that's counterproductive to our goal of healthier fan communities.
...and that is all for today! Sounds pretty cool, right? If you want even more exciting details, they are available in our full 2022 Retrospective! If you want to support our work, head down to the "how to help" section to learn more about all the different ways to get involved.
Next up later this week: our 2023 goals (part 2). Previous post: our 2022 achievements.

2022 Retrospective
I usually don't like looking back on the year much, but 2022 was a busy year for me so I want to take inventory of everything!
For Gamedev in 2022 I:
Shipped "Lofty Quest", a solo developed hidden object adventure game.
Tumblr media
Started Development on Bombing!! 2: A Graffiti Paradise!!!!!!!! \o/
Tumblr media
Shipped "Ritual Roadtrip", an awesome narrative arcade roadtrip game as part of the Cartomancy Anthology!

Prototyped out a Vampire Survivors-like
Tumblr media
Talked about Queer Coding in games as part of this amazing Destructoid Article
Did my first ever (!) paid talk in my game development career
Gave two talks on various topics related to solo development and level design as a discipline.
Participated in Canadian Game Devs amazing Extra Life livestream
Got back into freelance writing some articles for Wireframe magazine.
Got to collaborate with really awesome and kind creatives throughout all of this.
On the personal side I:
Lost 35lbs
Played soccer for the first time in over a decade.
Got engaged!
Continued developing myself as a Human Being.
Made it through 2022
Thank you to all the amazing people I've worked with this year and special shout out to everyone who engages with my work - even just knowing people have played my games or watch my stuff is enough to keep me going day to day. I absolutely consider the fact that there are kind people on my Discord who are always supporting my various endeavours, and people like you who keep tabs on what I'm doing a small miracle and an immense privilege. It's something I never try to take for granted in the slightest, and I truly appreciate everyone's support!
Thank you all so much and I hope to continue making weird and fun things in 2023 :)

Everything I Managed to Watch in 2022
I might as well give you my thoughts on...exactly what it says on the tin. I'll try to keep things short and simple since I'm kinda tired and I wanna finish celebrating the year's end, lmao.
First up, the movies!
Top 5 Favorite Movies:
5. The Bad Guys
4. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
3. Rise of the TMNT
2. Pinocchio (Netflix Movie)
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Honorable Mentions (still love them!!):
Turning Red
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
Wendell and Wild
On the television side of things, Smiling Friends, Dead End, The Cuphead Show, and Super Robot Giant Brothers, were pretty good! The Cuphead Show got better after its rather mediocre first season and I grew to love it. Smiling Friends I was happy turned out good as I expected, and I'm excited for season 2. Dead End was a nice surprise, I grew to like the characters and I appreciated how it handled its LGBT and Autism representation. Super Giant Robot Brothers deserves more love, Reel FX did a good job with that one, had some dynamic action and fun character moments.
For decent stuff, the only one was Hamster and Gretel. Will get back to it, but I hope gets a better execution than Milo Murphy's Law, which I liked too but the second season wasn't so great, oof.
On the other hand, shows that didn't wowed me were Oddballs and sadly Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight. The former had some decent jokes and maybe a character that amused me like Max, but the other attempts at jokes fell flat and characters like Echo really annoyed me.
The Dragon Knight was like the biggest disappointment for me. As a huge fan of KFP, I was hoping it would turn out to be a good show, maybe a better outing than the last KFP TV show. But I stopped at I think episode 5 and lost interest all around. The animation was a bit unfinished, and the writing choices were kind of questionable. I am glad they brought back Jack Black as Po, but alas...
There's like other shows that aired this year along with new seasons of other shows I love, but I'll watch them for next year.
For the anime stuff, Demon Slayer Season 2 was great, same with Spy X Family and Attack on Titan. Really happy I managed to give it another shot. Chainsaw Man also aired and of course was incredible. I'm already caught up with the manga and I'm eager to see how they'll handle the rest of the story soon. Urusei Yatsura 2022 I also want to shout out. I need to get back into binging the original series, but so far, the reboot is neat!
And also, I made a list of Anime Openings I watched this year and fell in love with. Keep in mind, I haven't seen any of these anime yet based on this list, aside from the ones I just mentioned above and also My Hero Academia, but I lost interest for that series because of story problems lately, yeah...
I'll get the chance to watch the others soon, don’t worry!
So here's the Honorable Mentions first:
Honorable Mentions:
BNHA OP 10: Way better than OP 9 and the visuals were unique, but the song didn't worked for me
Spy X Family OP 2: Visuals and song are neat, but the first op is more stronger to me
Dr. Stone Ryusei: Visuals are decent, but the new version of the first OP song was just incredible
My Top 11 Favorite Anime OPs:
11. Kaguya Sama OP 3 10. Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War OP 1 9. Call of the Night 8. One Piece OP 24 7. Ya Boy Kongming 6. Urusei Yatsura 2022 5. Spy X Family OP 1 4. Mob Psycho III OP 3. Attack on Titan OP 7 2. Chainsaw Man 1. Ranking of Kings OP 2
Boom! That's it! Here's hoping 2023 turns out to be an even greater experience for me, and for the animation community as well!

2022 Retrospective: TV-Shows/Movies
I didn’t really watch any anime this year, so I took all the anime categories out of this retrospective, because I can’t just talk about Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man. So, instead, here are the 2022 shows/movies I watched quickly reviewed.
Zettai BL Naru Sekai vs Sekai BL Narutakunai ni Otoko/The Man Who Defies the World of BL Season 2
This show still is hilarious. I mean, sure, I was hoping for a bit more romance between Mobu and Kikuchi, because they are adorable, and I ship them so hard. But what we got was still good. The last episode of this season had me rolling in laughter and tears. The confession-scene in this show is one of my favourite BL scenes as of now and I rewatch it regularly. Now I only need a season 3 with some actual romance for Mobu and Kikuchi. Come on, don’t leave me hanging, please.
KinnPorsche the Series
Well, this is the big one. Mannner of Death walked, so that this show could run. Some of the scenes in this show are seriously close to pornographic. I still really enjoyed the show, though there were some moments where I thought that it dropped the plot. Mile and Apo are really great together though, so that doesn’t really matter. The fanfictions of this show are really great, and I hope to add some of my own in this new year (most likely not…). Though one thing that is a massive turn off for me is how the fandom baby meow meows Vegas and shits on Kinn. Like, why is there a “Kinn Apologist” tag? Do I really need to apologise for liking a fictional character who is supposed to be morally grey? No, I will not. Kinn is my favourite character, there, I said it. This show also has Jeff Satur in it which is always a plus. And this is also probably just the Ingredients fan in me talking, but wasn’t Gameplay supposed to play Porchay? Why isn’t he? I mean, Barcode is great as Porchay, but he and Jeff by far don’t have the same chemistry that Jeff and Gameplay have.
Old Fashioned Cupcake
Yeah, I think this is my favourite show of the year. The writing is amazing, the acting is fantastic, and the characters are great. The only problem I can see, is that there are only five episodes of this wholesome show. It tells you that even if you’re nearing 40 (which is apparently already considered old) you can always find yourself and that it’s never too late. Kouhei Takeda is absolutely stellar in this show. Funny thing about that is that I watched Kamen Rider Build in 2021, after watching Zettai BL 1 and now three of the main riders have starred in BL Shows and I can’t believe it’s a coincidence anymore.
Kei x Yaku
Another BL with Atushiro Inukai, who is on his steady way to become one of my favourite Japanese actors. It’s a mafia drama bromance, leaning more towards the mafia drama than the bromance. It’s basically Kinnporsche, but with more political intrigue and no porn. Well… on screen at least.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3
This whole season could have been solved in one episode if there were some communication. That’s the most I can say about the story. It’s good. I really liked this season. I really liked the Sparrows. Sloane is a cool character and I really liked Sparrow!Ben. He just such a petty gay throughout the entire season and I love it. The rest of the Sparrows were cool, though I would have loved to get some more development for them and not just meet them for three episodes. I’m really looking forward to the final season coming this year.
Sandman
Yes, this show is amazing, what else can I tell you? The characters are great, the writing is great, it’s a good adaption that uses it’s medium to its fullest. I mean, it’s written by Neil Gaiman, what more can we want, am I right?
Wednesday
Maybe Tim Burton is getting back on track. At least somewhat. There are parts of this show I really enjoy. Jenna Ortega is amazing as Wednesday and seeing her energy clash with Enid’s is one of the highlights of this show. They are cute and I ship them, and they should have been together, mostly because the rest of her love interests are boring guys. I really can’t imagine Wednesday with any guy. Or girl for that matter. I always thought she was Ace. But yeah, make them lesbians, Netflix. I also really like the aesthetic of this show. Though there is one aspect that I just can’t get behind: The rest of the Addams Family. Morticia as a character is fine, though she should have been played by Christina Ricci, it would have been a great nod. My problem mainly lies with Gomez. And no, it’s not because he’s not conventionally attractive. He’s just so slimy and pathetic and that’s not Gomez at all. He needs to be charming. Also, the Addams are not bad parents.
Usogui
I watched this movie on a 14-hour plane ride from Costa Rica back home, when I was unable to sleep. And for what it was, I really enjoyed it. When I got home, I googled the movie and found out it was a live action adaption of a manga. It didn’t dim my enjoyment. I watched the movie again with my sister just for this review and I have to say: For what it is, it’s not bad. It does condense about 100 chapters into two hours, so a lot of stuff gets lost. But, and this is something I can always kind off appreciate about Live Action Adaptions (except Death Note): Most of the time, they get you interested in the source material. I started reading the manga after watching the movie and I do not regret it. The manga is absolutely fantastic. Madarame Baku is one of my new favourite characters. And Ryusei Yokohama is a great actor to play him.

2022 took some getting used to. I had my contract end at my old Work From Home job that carried me through the pandemic, and ended up going back to work in the office for the first time since Covid (only to immediately catch it myself, smh). The shift from WFH has been... rough, but I've been learning to make due as best I can. Ended up buying myself a cheap android tablet during Artfight so I could draw on the go, and it's been pulling its weight; that said, I'm still having to figure out the best way to implement it into my workflow. Every piece these past few months has taught me a lot, and I'm hoping to use that momentum moving forward.
internet events were... something. It's not been a great year for artists online, but thankfully this isn't my main source of income. Moving back to Tumblr as my main social has been a lot of fun, and I don't regret my decision. I hope you all will enjoy the stories I'm working on in due time! In the interim, remember to support your art friends where you can; times are tough and the internet only ever seems to grow more hostile to our careers with time.
Anyways, 2023 goals:
-finish writing a short story featuring two of my characters (tentatively named Parti)
-wrap up initial design work on the planned major characters for my main story project
-improve my workflow and make art a more fluid process for me
-studies
-try out streaming and decide whether or not it's for me (pay no attention to April's art piece I definitely have not been sitting on this for 8 months)
Have a great new year, and I wish you all the best of luck with your goals moving forward. +)

last year, i wrote 97,540 words of fanfiction and posted it all to AO3.
this year, I wrote 10,797 words and will post another 10,000 (maybe more) in early 2023. Is this a significant decrease? yes. but i think i am okay with that.
i did the best i could and am giving myself the grace not to feel bad about it. because this year was a lot.
this year, 4 of my friends got married. which is great! don’t get me wrong. it’s just also expensive. my rent increased 12%. insurance didn’t cover part of my surgery due to a clerical error (which i’m still fighting after 9 months of constant health insurance hotline hell). i also started a new and kind of expensive treatment for my chronic illness.
3 of my family members entered hospice. 2 of them subsequently passed away. A family friend passed away from covid-19, and another college friend passed a few weeks ago after a long illness.
this year has been full of loss and grief, and a bit stressful financially. the fact that i still found the will to write at all shocks me. i was so busy trying to make it through the showers and the funerals and the work and the medical bills. how did i find the time to accomplish all of that and write on top of all of it?
looking back, it would be easy to focus on the bad things that happened in 2022. to use them as an excuse for not measuring up to 2021 me. but i refuse to do that. i still created for fun! I still did something that made me happy! not at my historical pace, of course. but as welcome to night vale likes to say, past performance does not guarantee future results.
my results are different this year. but it's not about the comparison.
i made it through this year and my tiny flame of creativity didn't go out. to me, that is enough. i am enough.

My 2022 Animation Overview
This last year was my first year getting into animation. While I’m not fortunate enough to be able to afford college to go the professional route of this kind of art career, I am lucky to have the support to try and push my way in as an amateur anyway. So now here I am, with eleven months of self teaching experience under my belt.
Tumblr media
I started back in February with this one here. My first ever animation (and first ever copyright strike, yay for youtube’s auto flagger not knowing how fair use law works ;u;). I’ve been lucky that this one is only one of two of my animatics that I’ve been able to spot a mistake in post upload.
Tumblr media
This one was a shorter one that I managed to get done in only a couple weeks, and probably the one I’m least proud of at this point from it’s lack of substance. Still, every bit helps me learn, and it was still cute.
Tumblr media
And now to my most popular animation so far! I was very happy so many people liked this one, especially since Vincent is my favorite character in VTSoM, I got to have a lot of fun making it- I’ll definitely be making more Vincent centric ones. Like the one I have in the works right now... ;)
Tumblr media
Ye ol classic meme animatic, The Hole. Everyone who watches meme animations for their fandoms has seen some variation of this one. This was mine. This was where I started using more repeat “assets” (read: drawings) for the sake of consistency and saving myself time, for the first time.
Tumblr media
And another classic meme approach, vines. I plan on making two more of these for VTSoM in particular, but I will keep them spaced out since they’re a little more exhaustive to make. A lot of unrelated scenes with so many different characters being drawn out over two or three months is, well, a lot!
Tumblr media
And finally something from a different fandom! ...listen, I am a fnaf fan on tumblr, Sun and Moon brainrot is par for the course here. This particular animatic was another short one that came after two months of bad art block and life stress and me getting sick back to back. I needed a simple thing to come back with. Not to mention, I got an art tablet as a gift during the holidays, which was a major upgrade for me, so I had to learn (and am still learning) to use a totally new animation program! Thus, this silly little thing.
And that’s all for ‘22!
If you read through this whole thing, thank you! I know I don’t really post my art as often as some folks so it’s harder to tell, but I do work hard and near constantly on creating things. Lately that’s been largely animations, so I don’t have a whole lot of time for other things. And while I’d love to do this all for free, we do live under capitalism and I have to be able to pay for vet bills and groceries. So if you’d like to and are able to yourself, please consider checking out my Patreon! I post weekly updates of my animation progress as well as occasional random WIPs and sketches. Anyway, thanks again, and happy 2023!

I’ve been thinking a lot, lately. This year has been one of the hardest since I left my childhood home (not great circumstances, tbh). Some traumatic shit happened that reignited trauma from events I thought I’d gotten over years ago, and that sent me spiraling for a while. I live in a house with a step mother who sees signs of things not being great under the surface and being condescending as hell about those not-great signs, even though she knows from her own experiences of her mother shaming her for her appearance that you can’t shame anyone into living a healthier life (which, “a healthier life” is often pretty subjective as it is).
And at first, I was pretty hard on myself for fighting this long to remain here and experience all I can, only to be in my mid-late twenties, working food service and living with my parents when my siblings, exes, friends, etc. are all bettering themselves.
But the more I think about all the apparently wild shit I’ve been through, and the fact that I’ve come out of that not only alive, but discovering a desire to be alive? That’s something to be fucking proud of!! I have fought tooth and nail to be here, clawed my way out of the depths of my darkest days, faced down my own worst impulses and overcome them.
And it’s like, yeah. A lot of my family disapproves of who I am and who I’m becoming. But honestly, I don’t even care anymore. I might not be as successful as I wanted to be at this stage, but my heart’s still beating and my mouth’s still running, so I’ve still got a shot at living a life I can look back on with not only contentment, but with pride.
