I watched X-Men 2000 tonight. Yup the Deadpool and Wolverine brain worms got me - at least for a little while - so I figured I'd rewatch the old movies that I havent seen in over a decade and have basically forgotten entirely at this point.
You know what really stunned me? Even more than the slow pace, serious tone, actual dedication to telling a coherent and interesting story with layers of meaning and social commentary attached to it, as well as a sincerity that's been missing from most superhero films since the MCU was born (thanks Josh Whedon).
Nope, what shocked me most was this:
Tumblr media
This is a perfect specimen of a man. Look at him. He's gorgeous. But look at his chest? His arms? He's muscular, he's pretty well toned, he's hairy. He's definitely got a six pack - but it's nicely covered by a healthy layer of fat. His skin is plump, he has a bit of squish to him. He'd probably be great to hug (Jean Grey certainly gives him a good squeeze lol).
When he sits down he looks like his stomach will roll just nicely. Like a stomach should.
I know my point here is obvious. It's just that scrolling the Deadpool and Wolvering tag is basically 50% "oh they definitely fucked in the Honda Odyssey" (yes lol) and the other 50% is just horny posting over Wolverine's topless scene like the entire site suddenly adopted Deadpools horny brain.
I gotta give props to Hugh Jackman for his dedication to turn himself into an actual comic book character - because that's what this new movie does. It gives us a comic accurate Wolverine in practically every way (except for his height lol) the suit is amazing, the cowl was a joy to see brought into live action. The body too though was straight out of a comic book artists male power fantasy.
What I wanted to emphasise was that this:
Tumblr media
Is extremely tough on the human body. What I wanna know is how long he starved and dehydrated himself for before filming this scene? How long before they shot this did he last drink some water? Because damn that must have been tough. The oil and the lighting probably help further emphasise the muscle, vein, and sinew definition. It's probably similar to how body builders prepare before a show.
Nothing about body building is healthy though. So in the coming weeks as the whole entertainment industry rides on the coat tales of this movies success, and everyone goes crazy over Hugh Jackmans physique, please don't feel pressured into thinking that his 2024 physique in the movie is remotely realistic - or realistically attractive. Like I get the fantasy sure, but come on. I'd personally rather lie on a cushioned bed than a concrete floor.
Deadpool may disagree with me, but he's a masochist lol.
Oh and whilst I stand by the shade I threw at the MCU above, I think Wolverine's different physiques in the movies is a good standard of comparison for how much superhero movies have changed. Because when superhero comics first started getting adapted I think a lot of the choices made were about how to bring them to live action realistically and believably and the attitude was to try not to make them look ridiculous. The first X-Men movies definitely do this.
It was about bringing the comics to life in a way that fit in our world. But over the years, as audiences got more and more used to comic book movies the movies became more and more like comic books and less like a realistic adaptation of a comic book. Does that make sense? So as the movies attempted to bring the comics to life in a way that was less realistic and more comic accurate, the demands on the actors to sculpt their physiques to meet the standards of comic book art became normalised.
I think Deadpool and Wolverine is the MOST comic book accurate of all superhero movies made in the past 2 decades. Half the time the images from the movie look like they could be literally pulled from the pages of the comic books. The story is convoluted and stupid, the plot is barely there and is full of gaping plot holes and elements that don't fit any past stories. The action is ridiculous, extremely fast paced, gratuitous, and violent to a hilarious level. But it's so entertaining, joyful, exciting, and laugh out loud hilarious throughout.
It reminded me a LOT of my attempts at reading through the Deadpool comics (I've read a lot of them but no where near all of them).
To sum up this rambling message with multiple points, I'll say that Deadpool and Wolverine is a really fun movie that I thoroughly enjoyed, but make no mistake there is nothing real in it at all. It is almost literally a comic on screen. Don't expect anything more than that and you'll enjoy the experience.

tuesday again 1/16/2024
did not commit fratricide this week but it got a little close there
listening
spotify tried to rec me some electro remix of this Eartha Kitt song i did NOT care for but i did enjoy the original Mink Schmink (YouTube). very similar to last year’s favorite Peel Me A Grape by Anita O’Day. this is a particular kind of oldies #girlboss song that i am super weak to
i also have an entire album to rec! spotify recced me a movie soundtrack by this artist and i went to check out their latest work. a very pleasant outer space themed saxophone-forward experience to enjoy while trying out a very slow video game! the opening track Chaldene will let you know pretty fast if you’ll like the whole album. bouncy, in the ways that saxophones are. very cowboy bebop soundtrack adjacent? i have a data entry playlist with many instrumental albums of long pieces for when i need really consistent vibes or vibes that change very slowly and this is going to be such a good addition
reading
feeling a little bit grim about the state of the world and long-tail reporting/continuity of knowledge, partially bc some friends got fired from the games industry and are throwing in the towel (do not blame them at ALL, also now this means i don't know anyone in the industry with more than three years of experience under their belt) and partially feeling a little bit grim bc i read an article FOREVER ago from the old motherboard team at VICE about how locations were being harvested from various religious and health apps, and FINALLY that data broker is starting to see some real consequences. the ONLY reason this reporter is still following this story/is still a reporter is bc after VICE summarily fired like half the site last year, he went off and started his own site.
grim! grim article, grim context, grim all around.
watching
i would love for my best friend's son to become obsessed with a different movie than pixar's elemental. but if this is the price of having an only semi-interrupted conversation with his mom then so be it.
playing
“sail forth” by developer Quantum Astrophysicists Guild and published by Festive Vector (pair of really killer names there) is the free epic game this week. i spent a reasonably okay hour with it but do not plan to continue further. the opening area has some problems that do not interest me in whatever this game does in the next area. tldr: the actual sailing part is fun, which is good bc it's a sailing game, but there isn't enough to Do in this adventure/exploration game and it's all really far apart.
Tumblr media
it has a particular sensibility married with its art style that makes me say “cozy game” (derogatory). your main character is named captain toot. everyone has funky sentence structure liberally sprinkled with nautical terms that come off vaguely nonsensical instead of piratical. there are a lot of almost-kennings like “deepblue” “moontiders” “fishfolk”. things of this nature. while i do love a kenning i don’t have a lot of patience for this. which is unfortunate bc this game tested my patience in several ways.
Tumblr media
the actual Sailing part is the best part of the game. there's some very fun weather-- i have seen light and heavy fog, light and heavy rain, and a full on thunderstorm. the fact that sailing is the best part of the game would be good except everything is VERY far apart, and while the call of a blank horizon is super important in an oceangoing game (i think) when it becomes more fun to just fast travel everywhere instead of sailing the long way, i think that’s where you have to refine some things in your game. this is less of an open world and more little pockets of things in between a truly ridiculous amount of empty space. i cannot imagine this runs in an acceptable manner on switch.
Tumblr media
the good parts of sailing are the thoughtful controls: the compass, the wind on the compass, and the little sail trim bar. you should also keep an eye on wave direction bc that will really impact your top speed. you CAN tack back and forth directly into the wind but this game will make you fucking work for it, which i do like. i also liked sailing with the camera zoomed all the way in, it felt very fast and dangerous on the very long wait to get to the next island. and then it was no longer fun on the very long sail to get to the next island. i am almost confident these islands are procgen, it’s possible i got a weirdly big seed but i don’t care enough to fire up a new save.
the general pace of the game/this first area feels a little underbaked or weirdly optimized. i got enough wood in the first hour to upgrade to the best available one-mast sloop, i fought a pirate which required a lot of precision seamanship with my one lonely bow gun, i did a race, i declined a target practice course, i poked my head into eight different map locations. despite this variety, it all felt very samey. generally the map locations have one or two things to do plus one resource (the precision seamanship required to collect resources is fun for the first two islands but then stops being interesting) or one collectible. no one island is particularly memorable. i really loved Sunless Sea, a game that also features a large map and very slow travel, but there’s a WAY more resource management and random events, and shit is simply closer together in that game.
if i was looking for a very slow podcast game and was 20% cutesier as a person this would be ideal, but for who i am right now? not for me.
making
my siblings visited! we did not kill each other, nobody had food poisoning, and nobody died! that's all i can really ask for. here's me and my sister looking at a big quilt at the 1940 Air Terminal Museum
Tumblr media
phil went to the emergency vet sunday afternoon bc her spay site was looking Gnarly. she either has an infection or a reaction to her sutures but the treatment is the same either way. the emergency vet said we could probably skip our normal vet visit on friday but, given that we discover a new problem every time we go to the vet, we will be keeping that appointment. all recent pics of her are smushed up on my lap at a goofy angle. have a pic of mackaroni and beans

Horror Movies: Something Old, Something New
Five double features, each matchup featuring a similar theme, plot, or style--but separated by at least twenty years.
Matango (1963, 1h 30m) and Gaia (2021, 1h 30m): Matango is the story of a group of boaters shipwrecked on a strange island infested with bizarre mushrooms. Based on a 1907 short story called The Voice In The Night (read it on archive.org here) and directed by Ishirō Honda, one of the directors and writers of the original Godzilla, it's spine-tingling tale. Gaia takes place in a South African forest, where a pair of forestry service employees discover that the forest is alive in a whole different way than they thought. Both stories deal with fungus, changing human bodies, and ecological disaster. You may want to avoid mushrooms and blue cheese for a bit after these.
The Red Shoes (1948, 2h 15m) and The Red Shoes (2005, 1h 45m): Both of these stories take their title and overall themes from the same Hans Christian Andersen story. You can read the story here. Separated by nearly sixty years and multiple continents--since the 1948 film was made in England and the 2005 film was made in South Korea--they're well worth comparing. Two different times and cultures tackle the same story, and come out with stories that are fully distinct yet strikingly similar.
Ghostwatch (1992, 1h 30m) and Late Night With the Devil (2024, 1h 30m): On Halloween night in 1992, on live TV, a BBC documentary crew enters a haunted house to witness a haunting, only for everything to go horribly wrong--or at least that's the premise of Ghostwatch. The BBC created its mockumentary using its established TV personalities and other added elements of realism, resulting in a War of the Worlds type of national panic. It's never been run on any UK TV channel again. Late Night With the Devil takes a similar spin, although it doesn't present itself as happening today: it's a documentary of events occurring on live TV in 1977. Despite that, watch the plot beats. See if you can spot Ghostwatch. I was able to predict almost the exact plot of the film once I realized what was going on (although it didn't detract from my enjoyment at all).
The Thing (1982, 1h 50m) and 30 Days of Night (2007, 1h 50m): Two different takes on "stranded in an icy polar wasteland," one taking place in Antarctica and the other in Alaska. In the first, the monstrous chaos comes from a shapeshifting alien, while in the second, it's vampires. However, as different as its monsters are, 30 Days of Night pays plenty of homage to The Thing. From helicopter sabotage to prevent escape to a striking shot that evokes the theatrical poster of The Thing, 30 Days of Night shows where it came from. TW for dog death in both movies.
Jason and the Argonauts (1963, 1h 45m) and Bonestorm (short film from VHS: Viral 2014, anthology runtime 1h 20m): Okay, so Jason and the Argonauts isn't exactly horror. It's a retelling of the myth of the same name, with Jason and his crew of heroes sailing to find the Golden Fleece. As much as it is heroic fantasy, it's also full of monsters--stop-motion hydras, harpies, and more created by the legendary Ray Harryhausen. The grand finale is a battle against a group of animated skeletons, which you can watch here. Fifty years later, the makers of Bonestorm revisited the same idea, as a pair of skateboarders battle cultists-turned-skeletons on a trip to Mexico.
Food for thought: Whether or not the more recent filmmakers were aware of the older movies is uncertain, but what can we as viewers draw from these strikingly similar works? Do the old-school effects hold up next to their modern counterparts? In the Matango/Gaia and Red Shoes double features, different cultures are also in play. What's the impact of that on the stories? What does it say about horror that we keep going back to revisit the same themes and stories?

After a hiatus, the Africa Twin made a triumphant return in 2016 with the CRF1000L, and has since garnered a dedicated following of adventure enthusiasts.
youtube
A Legacy of Adventure
The Africa Twin's history is steeped in adventure and off-road prowess. The original XRV650, introduced in Europe in 1988, was based on the NXR750 and NXR800 racers that conquered the Dakar Rally. It quickly gained popularity and evolved into the XRV750 in 1990, selling over 73,000 units before being discontinued in 2001.
In 2016, Honda revived the Africa Twin with the CRF1000L, offering it in both European and American markets. The following year, the Adventure Sports version joined the lineup, catering to riders seeking a more touring-focused experience. The Africa Twin has since become a staple in the adventure riding community, known for its rugged durability and versatility.
What's New for 2024
The 2024 Africa Twin models receive a host of updates and refinements, enhancing their performance and capabilities. Adventure Sports versions now feature a 19-inch front wheel and shorter suspension travel, optimizing on-road handling and maneuverability. Tubeless tires, previously exclusive to Adventure Sports versions, are now fitted on the standard versions as well, providing convenient repair options without removing the wheel.
The 1,084cc twin-cylinder engine generates stronger power and torque in the low- to mid-rpm range, thanks to a higher compression ratio and updated ECU settings. The Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) has also been improved for smoother engagement at low speeds. The Adventure Sports versions also feature three-stage cornering lighting for optimal illumination during different types of corners. With these technological advancements, the Africa Twin offers riders a seamless and connected riding experience.
Engine and Drivetrain
All versions of the 2024 Africa Twin are powered by a 1,084cc water-cooled, parallel-twin engine that delivers strong power and torque. The engine has undergone improvements, including a higher compression ratio, optimized ECU settings, and an updated muffler design. These enhancements result in increased performance and improved driveability across the rev range.
The Africa Twin is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or Honda's innovative Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The DCT version offers seamless gear changes and can be operated in automatic or manual mode, providing riders with the flexibility to choose their preferred shifting style.
Chassis and Suspension
The Africa Twin's chassis and suspension have been designed to handle a wide range of terrains and riding conditions. The steel semi-double-cradle frame provides optimal rigidity and flexibility for challenging situations, while the aluminum swingarm ensures rigidity and lightness. The standard Africa Twin models feature fully adjustable front and rear suspension, with long-travel Showa forks and a Pro-Link® rear suspension system.
The Adventure Sports versions are equipped with Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA™), which adjusts damping based on bike speed, stance, and fork behavior. This high-tech suspension system allows riders to customize their suspension settings for different riding scenarios, ensuring optimal comfort and performance.
Brakes and Safety Features
The 2024 Africa Twin models are equipped with advanced braking systems and safety features to provide riders with confidence and control. Dual front 310mm petal-style floating rotors and radial-mount four-piston calipers deliver consistent stopping power, while the rear rotor features a petal design for efficient braking. The ABS system is designed to adapt to different riding conditions, with separate modes for on-road and off-road performance.
The system utilizes information from the IMU to detect rear-wheel lift and adjust braking pressure accordingly. Riders can also switch off the rear ABS for more precise off-road braking. Additionally, Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) helps optimize acceleration performance by providing smooth slide control and wheelie control.
Accessories and Customization
Honda offers a wide range of accessories for the Africa Twin, allowing riders to customize their motorcycles to suit their preferences and riding style. From aluminum luggage to higher and lower seats, there are options to enhance comfort, storage, and functionality. Honda also offers accessory packs, such as the Rally Pack, Adventure Pack, Urban Pack, and Travel Pack, which provide a combination of accessories tailored to specific riding needs.
Whether riders are looking for added protection, increased storage capacity, or improved touring capabilities, the Africa Twin's accessories allow for endless customization possibilities.
The 2024 Africa Twin lineup represents the pinnacle of adventure riding, combining Honda's rich heritage with cutting-edge technology and performance. With updates and refinements across the board, these motorcycles offer unparalleled versatility and capability on any terrain. Whether riders are tackling off-road trails, exploring remote landscapes, or cruising on scenic highways, the Africa Twin delivers an exhilarating and unforgettable riding experience.
With its legendary status and the latest advancements, the Africa Twin continues to inspire riders to push their boundaries and embark on new adventures.

2024 Honda CB650R
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For 24YM Honda’s naked four-cylinder jewel evolves its Neo Sports Café style with a sharp styling update from nose to tail. A brand-new 5-inch TFT screen offers Honda RoadSync connectivity, operated by simplified new 4-way toggle switch. Engine performance is unchanged at 70kW power and 63Nm torque, with an A2 option. The CB650R - alongside the CBR650R super sports bike - will be the first Honda to be offered with the option of Honda E-Clutch technology, which gives the rider choice of automatic clutch operation by simply using the shift pedal. Chassis specification includes Showa SFF-BP USD forks, dual four-piston radial mount front calipers and 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 tyre combination. Two brand-new paint options and two new colour combinations strike a contemporary chord.
Tumblr media
- Introduction Honda has always thrived on exploring new boundaries – in design as well as engineering. In 18YM, the CB1000R, CB300R and CB125R brought a fresh identity to its naked motorcycle line-up, mixing café racer inspirations with a forward-looking ultra-minimalist look under the ‘Neo Sports Café’ design theme. In 19YM the CB650R joined the family and its combination of cool styling, exhilarating four-cylinder engine performance and light, versatile handling ensured immediate sales success. Building on the momentum, for 21YM it received a major front suspension upgrade, plus a range of detail improvements to enhance comfort, usability and practicality. 24YM is an important year for the CB650R and while updated style and functionality will get attention, this bike – alongside its naked sibling, the CBR650R – will go down in history as the first Honda to be available with Honda E-Clutch technology, which is designed to make motorcycling, from beginner right through to expert, even more enjoyable – and even more exciting. Valerio Aiello, of Honda’s Rome R&D Department on the Neo Sports Café design aesthetic: “The entire current Neo Sport Café range from Honda is the result of the CB4 Concept model presented at EICMA in 2015. Our desire was to explore the world of the café racer and reinterpret it in a modern key. We wanted to create neo-classics – that is, modern motorcycles showcasing classic design styles combined with modern techniques.  I used inspiration from outside the world of motorcycles, in watches. I’ve always liked their technicality and one of the key concepts used during the Neo Sports Café design was 'Mechanical Art'. This is the desire to show the beauty of the various mechanical elements to which Honda has always given great importance.”
Tumblr media
- Model Overview There’s a fresh look to the CB650R’s retro minimalism. A new headlight, radiator shrouds, rider/pillion seat, tail unit and taillight inject a more dynamic energy, while the fuel tank remains a strong presence above the beautiful inline four-cylinder engine. A new 5-inch full colour TFT screen is designed for readability on bright days and features Honda RoadSync connectivity. Managed by a new, easy-to-use 4-way lefthand backlit toggle switch the rider can now enjoy on-screen, turn-by-turn navigation in addition to other smartphone features. Performance is unchanged: 70kw peak power with 63Nm are fun figures for a naked bike,  and the classic in-line 4 cylinder ‘pick-up’ and high-revving top end power are longstanding Honda calling cards. A 35kW option is available for A2 licence holders. Available as an option on the CB650R, the new Honda E-Clutch takes away the need for the rider to use the clutch lever to make a shift either up or down the gearbox. The chassis is as before and a perfect package from city block to twisting back road. A steel diamond frame provides core rigidity while 41mm Showa SFF-BP USD front forks and Showa rear shock deliver high-quality suspension control. Four-piston radial-mount front brake calipers work 310mm floating discs and cast aluminium wheels mount 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 front and rear tyres. The 24YM CB650R will be available in the following colour options: **NEW** Matt Laurel Green Metallic with Matt Vulcan Silver Metallic details **NEW** Pearl Smokey Gray, with Matt Crypton Silver Metallic details Candy Chromosphere Red with NEW Matt Crypton Silver Metallic details Matt Gunpowder Black Metallic with NEW Matt Crypton Silver Metallic details
Tumblr media
- Key Features 3.1 Styling & Equipment - Neo Sports Café styling evolves dynamically - New 5-inch full colour TFT screen includes Honda RoadSync connectivity for on-screen turn-by-turn navigation and access to other smartphone functions - New, simplified left hand switchgear easy to use and backlit for night-time - All lighting LED; new slanted headlight matched by new taillight design Tightly wrapped, the CB650R’s Neo Sports Café style evolution features the signature compact ‘Trapezoid’ proportion of a new, sharper tail and short-overhang and new slanted LED headlight All other lighting is LED, and a new taillight tucks seamlessly into the new fairing. From the front, via the new radiator shrouds backwards, the overall look is sinuous, more dynamic and with keen sense of purpose. The long fuel tank remains a key motif of the family design; its smooth lines accentuate the solidity of real metal surfaces and crown the engineering of the four-cylinder powerplant. It also houses the ignition. A 35° handlebar angle makes tight, slow-speed turns and U-turns straightforward. The shape of the pillion and rider seats have been revised to match the new tail; seat height remains 810mm. There’s a USB Type-C socket located under the seat. Premium technology – in the form of a brand new, 5-inch full colour TFT screen – uses optical bonding to improve visibility in bright sunlight. By sealing the gap between the cover glass and TFT screen with resin, glare is reduced, and visibility improved. The display itself is customisable between ‘Bar’, ‘Circle’ and ‘Simple’ display patterns and also, for the first time on the CB650R, offers the smartphone connectivity of Honda RoadSync. Honda RoadSync – alongside a new simplified, easy-to-use, backlit 4-way toggle-switch on the left handlebar – allows straightforward, on-screen turn-by-turn navigation as well as the option (via a Bluetooth helmet headset) for the rider to make calls, listen to music or receive voice feedback of weather conditions. All an owner has to do is download the free Honda RoadSync app from either the Play Store or the App Store, connect to the CB650R, and go.
Tumblr media
3.2 Chassis - 41mm Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks  - Four-piston, radial-mount front brake calipers and floating discs - 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 front and rear tyres The steel diamond frame uses pressed swingarm pivot plates and twin elliptical spars with a rigidity balance specifically tuned (stiffer around the headstock and more flexible in the spar sections) to deliver excellent all-round handling characteristics with high levels of rider feedback. Rake is set at 25.5° with trail of 100mm and wheelbase of 1,450mm. Kerb weight is 205kg (207kg E-Clutch). Showa’s 41mm Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks offer high-quality reaction. A pressure separation damper in one fork tube and spring mechanism in the other deliver high damping performance and lighter weight. Together with the use of a larger sized piston, the result is increased feel, bump absorption and control. Adjustable for 10-stage spring preload, the single-tube monoshock operates directly on the curvaceous gravity die-cast aluminium swingarm. Four-piston radial-mount front brake calipers work 310mm floating discs, and are paired with a single-piston rear caliper and 240mm disc. The ABS is a two-channel system. Cast aluminium wheels mount 120/70-ZR17 and 180/55-ZR17 front and rear tyres.
Tumblr media
3.3 Engine - 70kW peak power with 63Nm peak torque - 35kW A2 licence option available - Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) The 649cc, DOHC 16-valve engine is unchanged for 24YM. It’s tuned to create the purest, most enjoyable mid-sized four-cylinder performance possible, with the classically fast ‘pick-up’ through the rev range and hard-hitting, high-revving top end for which Honda’s in-line fours are renowned. Peak power of 70kW arrives @ 12,000rpm with peak torque @ 63Nm delivered at 9,500 rpm. A 35kW option is available for A2 licence holders. Direct cam actuation makes for a compact cylinder head; bore and stroke is set at 67mm x 46mm with compression ratio raised of 11.6:1. Iridium spark plugs are employed and twin air ducts – either side of the fuel tank – feed the airbox and produce a throaty intake roar. Asymmetric piston skirts minimise bore contact and reduce friction. Ferrous spines on the outer surface of the cylinder sleeves reduce oil consumption (and friction) with improved heat transfer and a silent SV cam chain reduces frictional losses by using a Vanadium coating on its pins. Internal water channelling from cylinder head to cylinders does away with most of the exterior hoses. The engine uses a compact internal architecture, stacked six-speed gearbox and starter layout with the cylinders canted forward 30°. An assist/slipper clutch eases upshifts while managing rear-wheel lock up under hard braking and rapid downshifts. Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) manages rear wheel traction; it can be turned off should the rider choose. Fuel consumption of 20.4km/l (WMTC mode) gives a range of over 300km from the 15.4L fuel tank. EURO5 compliant, environmental efficiency has been updated with revisions to the ECU and catalyser, as well as the addition of an OBD2-2 sensor.
Tumblr media
- Honda E-Clutch - see separate post - World-first technology allows the rider to start, stop and change gear without using the clutch lever – just the shift pedal - Available as an option from new; system adds 2kg to kerb weight - Honda E-Clutch also allows normal operation of the clutch lever - Brings more enjoyment and flexibility across a wide range of scenarios, for a ‘next level’ riding experience Honda E-Clutch takes elements of the technology and performance of quickshifters, manually-operated clutches and Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission technology to create a unique blend of these well-proven approaches, opening up a whole new aspect of the motorcycling experience for riders of every type and experience level. The clutch and transmission hardware themselves are no different from a conventional motorcycle, with the ultra-compact system weighing only 2 kilograms. In operation, Honda E-clutch is simplicity itself, taking away the need to use the clutch lever to make a shift either up or down the gearbox. The rider simply has to operate the shift pedal for ultra-fast, consistent gear changes, bringing extra enjoyment to sporty riding. The clutch lever is also not needed when pulling away or coming to a stop. Becoming active as soon as the engine is switched on, the system manages both scenarios smoothly, while taking away the possibility of the engine stalling when in operation, providing extra convenience and peace of mind to town riding involving frequent starts and stops.
Tumblr media
In addition to enjoyment and convenience, Honda E-Clutch brings ultimate flexibility. Should the rider wish, they are able to operate the clutch lever as normal at any time. When the clutch lever is used, the Honda E-clutch system will re-activate after less than a second above a certain engine rpm; after 5 seconds at lower engine speeds. Should the rider wish to turn off the system for a particular ride, this is also possible via the switchgear on the left handlebar. The change to manual operation is indicated by a letter ‘M’ on the instrument panel. The Honda E-Clutch also allows the rider to select an ‘operation feel’ to set the strength of the force required on the shift pedal to make a gear change. Three settings are available: HARD, MEDIUM, and SOFT, each of which can be chosen independently for upshifting and downshifting. The technology will also advise the rider to shift down - via a symbol on the instrument panel - if it detects the motorcycle is in a high gear at a certain speed. The Honda E-Clutch manages clutch engagement and disengagement based on its reading of parameters including vehicle speed, throttle opening angle, engine rpm, pressure on the shift pedal, clutch motor reduction gear angle, engine countershaft speed and gear position. The clutch is operated through an actuator unit with two motors situated inside the right hand engine cover. As the clutch is engaged or disengaged, the engine’s ignition timing and fuel injection are also controlled, resulting in smooth, shock-free shifting in any situation. Junya Ono, Large Project Leader, Honda E-Clutch: “Our Honda E-Clutch is designed to offer motorcyclists a new kind of experience that can make their riding even more fun and exciting. It also adds peace of mind and comfort to town riding or the daily commute. We hope that many riders will try our new system to enjoy the unique mix of sportiness and flexibility it offers.”

2024 Aston Martin Valour Review: Boosting Appeal with a V12 Manual
One shift in the Aston Martin Valour and you're hooked. It's the nature of that shift that's key—a manual gear change connected to a V12 engine via metal and rods, all wrapped in a bespoke body, yours for £1.5m plus options. While Pagani initiated the trend with the Pagani Utopia's manual gearbox, Aston Martin's front-engine V12 setup offers unique bragging rights. The Valour, celebrating Aston’s 110th anniversary, is limited to 110 units, all of which are already sold out. Quick OverviewPros: Smooth manual gearbox, classic handling characteristicsCons: Polarizing design, outdated infotainment system What’s new?The design, inspired by the 'Muncher'—a unique Aston racer from the 1977 Le Mans—is certainly a talking point. While opinions in the CAR office are split, my take is that it looks stunning. The aggressive rear diffuser is tuned for road use, and the duck-tail boot lid helps reduce lift, though neither adds downforce. Built on the Vantage platform, the Valour features the previous generation's twin-turbo V12, now delivering 705bhp and 555lb ft, slightly more than the 2022 Vantage special edition. The 0-62mph time remains unchanged, which makes sense given the switch from an eight-speed automatic to a manual gearbox. The Valour retains rear-wheel drive and a mechanical limited-slip differential, while a new stainless steel exhaust with a 1mm wall thickness enhances its sound and reduces weight. SpecificationsThe Valour features bespoke suspension with unique adaptive dampers, springs, and anti-roll bars. It offers three drive modes: Sport, Sport+, and Track, which adjust throttle response and exhaust note. Suspension and engine mapping can be controlled via buttons on either side of the steering wheel. Aston Martin states that elements like the braced rear tower strut and fuel tank make the Valour stiffer than the standard Vantage. It also comes with standard carbon ceramic brakes. Driving ExperienceInterestingly, the Valour is not dominated by its V12 engine. While there's plenty of power to make it lively under full throttle, the V12's growl is not overwhelming. The engine is not peaky; the turbos engage from 2000rpm and become more engaging at 3000rpm, making it easy to utilize the torque in sixth gear. Despite its 705bhp, it feels almost normal by today's standards. What sets this car apart is its old-school charm rather than modern technology. It feels reminiscent of historic racers, with a pleasant roll around the corners that provides a sense of movement without being alarming. The balance and interplay of the systems make it appealing. The gearbox has a longer throw compared to the Honda Civic Type R, but this allows the turbos to spool up before shifting to the next gear. The Valour doesn't lead its class in any particular area, and that's part of its charm. Its electrically assisted steering doesn't match the feel of a McLaren, and its suspension doesn't offer the refined balance of ride and handling provided by modern twin-valve dampers. However, these aspects don't detract from the Valour's appeal. Aston Martin Valour: VerdictIt’s easy to be cynical about the Vantage, viewing it as an old car dressed up and sold at a high price. However, driving and experiencing it reveals that Aston Martin has made a genuine effort to enhance its appeal. It won't suit everyone's tastes, and there are certainly more advanced rivals on the market. Yet, as a statement and a glorious nod to the past, it stands out and is all the better for it. McLaren have voiced confidence over their chances of taking the fight to Red Bull in 2024, with the team “optimistic” that they can beat the world champions – at least on certain occasions – following their impressive development in 2023.
McLaren, one of the leading teams in Formula 1, is reportedly feeling optimistic about their prospects of challenging Red Bull in the 2024 season. Despite Red Bull's dominant performance in recent years, McLaren believes that their strong development rate will allow them to close the gap and mount a serious competitive challenge.
McLaren has been gradually improving their performance over the past few seasons, with key developments in their car design and engine performance. Their partnership with Mercedes-Benz as their engine supplier has also been a significant boost, as Mercedes has consistently produced some of the most powerful and reliable engines in Formula 1.
The team's CEO, Zak Brown, has expressed confidence in McLaren's ability to continue their upward trajectory and challenge for podium finishes and race wins. He believes that the team's strong development rate, coupled with solid technical leadership and a talented driver lineup, will be the foundation for their success.
However, McLaren recognizes the formidable challenge posed by Red Bull Racing, which has been the team to beat in recent seasons. Red Bull, powered by Honda engines, has had a strong car design combined with exceptional driving talent, resulting in multiple championships.
To bridge the gap, McLaren is focused on fostering a culture of innovation, investing in their technical team, and maximizing their resources. They also intend to capitalize on the newly introduced F1 regulations set to be implemented in 2022, which aim to level the playing field by introducing cost caps and aerodynamic changes.
While McLaren's optimism is certainly encouraging, Formula 1 is an intensely competitive sport, and success is never guaranteed. Nonetheless, fans eagerly await the 2024 season to see how McLaren's development progress comes to fruition and whether they can truly challenge Red Bull for the top spot on the podium.
McLaren's optimism stems from the steady progress they have made in recent years. After enduring a difficult period where they struggled to achieve their past glories, the team has made significant strides to rebuild their reputation as a frontrunner in the sport.
One of the key elements of their resurgence has been the strong collaboration between McLaren and their engine supplier, Mercedes-Benz. The partnership, which began in 2021, has already shown promising results. McLaren has benefited from Mercedes' expertise in engine development, which has provided them with more power and reliability on the track.
Furthermore, McLaren has been investing heavily in their technical team, bringing in experienced personnel and bolstering their resources. They have also focused on strengthening their aerodynamic capabilities, recognizing the importance of aerodynamic efficiency in maximizing their car's performance.
In addition to their technical advancements, McLaren boasts an impressive driver lineup. With the signing of Daniel Ricciardo, a proven race-winning driver, alongside Lando Norris, a rising star in Formula 1, McLaren has a combination of talent, experience, and youth that bodes well for their future prospects.
While Red Bull Racing has been dominant in recent years, McLaren believes that their dedication, determination, and continuous development will allow them to mount a serious challenge. Their optimistic outlook is fueled by the confidence that they can bridge the performance gap and fight for victories and championships.
Of course, Formula 1 is a highly competitive arena, and the landscape can change rapidly. Other teams, such as Mercedes, Ferrari, and even newcomer Aston Martin, will also be looking to assert their dominance. The battle for supremacy in Formula 1 is fierce and unforgiving, requiring constant innovation, agility, and adaptability from the teams.
As the 2024 season approaches, McLaren's fans eagerly await the results of their ongoing development and are excited about the potential to see their team take the fight to Red Bull and challenge for the top spots on the grid. Only time will tell if McLaren's optimism will prove justified, but their determination to succeed is evident, and their progress so far is certainly promising.
McLaren's confidence in challenging Red Bull in 2024 stems from their remarkable progress and development in 2023. Throughout that year, McLaren showcased their commitment to improving their car's performance and pushing the boundaries of engineering. As a result, they were able to narrow the gap to the front-runners, including Red Bull.
The team's optimism about surpassing the current world champions appears to be based on their continued dedication to enhancing their technical capabilities and maximizing their resources. McLaren has a history of being a strong contender in Formula 1, and their recent resurgence has solidified their position as a competitive team.
However, the statement implies that McLaren may not expect consistent victories over Red Bull but instead aims to challenge them on specific occasions. This acknowledges the excellence of Red Bull, who have established themselves as a dominant force in recent years. Nonetheless, McLaren's ambitious attitude suggests that they will seize opportunities to outperform Red Bull whenever circumstances allow.
It is worth noting that the Formula 1 landscape can be highly unpredictable, and various factors can influence team performance. Factors like driver skills, technical advancements, rule changes, and strategic decisions play critical roles in determining success in the sport.
Ultimately, time will tell if McLaren's optimism can translate into real on-track success against Red Bull in 2024. Formula 1 fans will eagerly await the upcoming season to see if McLaren can challenge the reigning world champions and bring about exciting competition at the front of the grid.
McLaren's optimism is not unfounded. The team has shown remarkable progress over the past few seasons, gradually climbing up the grid and reestablishing themselves as a formidable force in Formula 1. Their improvement in 2023 has been particularly noteworthy, culminating in impressive performances and solid results.
One of the key factors driving McLaren's resurgence has been their newfound stability and strong leadership. Under the guidance of CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andreas Seidl, McLaren has streamlined their operations, enhanced their technical capabilities, and strengthened their partnership with engine supplier Mercedes.
Furthermore, McLaren has managed to attract top-tier talent to their team, including standout drivers like Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. This driver pairing has proven to be a strong combination, bringing a balance of experience and youth to the team. With Norris consistently showcasing his talent and Ricciardo adding his valuable expertise, McLaren has a competitive driver lineup capable of challenging the best in the sport.
In terms of technical progress, McLaren has made significant advancements in areas such as aerodynamics, chassis development, and overall car performance. These improvements have resulted in a more competitive package, enabling McLaren to close the gap to the front-runners and challenge for podium finishes and even race victories.
While the statement suggests that McLaren may not expect to consistently beat Red Bull in 2024, it conveys their determination to exploit opportunities and capitalize on their progress. Formula 1 is an incredibly competitive sport, and victory is often determined by slim margins. McLaren's confidence in occasionally outperforming Red Bull indicates that they have identified potential strengths and strategic advantages to capitalize on during specific races.
Nonetheless, toppling a team as dominant as Red Bull will undoubtedly require sustained progress and continuous development. The fight for supremacy in Formula 1 is a relentless battle, pushing teams to continually strive for excellence in every aspect of their operations.
In summary, McLaren's optimism for challenging Red Bull in 2024 stems from their impressive development in 2023, their strong leadership, talented drivers, and technical advancements. While success against the reigning world champions may not be guaranteed, McLaren's determination, progress, and ambition make them a team to watch closely in the upcoming Formula 1 season.

Stephen Edelstein/Top Reviewing with regards to electrifying overall performance vehicles, Mercedes-Benz feels there’s no silver round. The automaker’s Mercedes-AMG overall performance unit has recently designed EVs like AMG EQE SUV additionally the S63 AMG E Efficiency sedan, a plug-in hybrid that sets electric help with among brand’s standard V8 machines. AMG’s newest electrified design — a hot-rodded form of the GLC-Class lightweight crossover SUV and a rival to show SUVs like BMW X3 M and Porsche Macan — sits someplace in between those extremes. Arriving in showrooms when you look at the last half of 2024 as a 2025 design, the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S E Efficiency, whilst’s officially understood, is a plug-in hybrid like newest S63 — but one which utilizes electrical power to pay for a radically downsized motor. In place of a large V8 like S63 and last-generation GLC63, it utilizes an even more affordable turbocharged four-cylinder motor. In place of managing electrification like essential medication, this AMG plug-in hybrid embraces its opportunities. Design and interior The GLC63 is applicable slight styling modifications to a currently slight redesign associated with the base GLC, which premiered for 2023 design 12 months searching just about like its forerunner. To that particular nondescript base, AMG adds a grille having its trademark straight slats, bigger front side atmosphere intakes, a rear diffuser, prominent tailpipes, many outside badging. Just real vehicle lovers will more than likely observe these variations, which provides the GLC63 some included cool element. Stephen Edelstein/Top Reviewing Like other GLC variants, the GLC63 is available in standard SUV and coupe body styles. The term “coupe” traditionally refers to a two-door car, but Mercedes and fellow German automakers BMW, Audi, and Porsche have stretched that term to include four-door cars with low, sloped rooflines. These vehicles are still true coupes in the sense that they offer less rear headroom and cargo space than old-fashioned SUVs. The GLC63 is applicable slight styling modifications to a currently slight redesign associated with the base GLC. In standard SUV kind, the GLC63 provides similar cargo area to similarly-sized deluxe SUVs like BMW X3 and Porsche Macan. That’s among advantages of an AMG Mercedes: under the overall performance improvements, it is nevertheless a typical vehicle. The inside employs a familiar but gratifying meal. Mercedes’ present home design motif seems razor-sharp. The angled dashboard, freestanding displays, and large round vents give the cabin an exceptional appearance and convey this is not a regular Honda or Toyota. AMG designs obtain the anticipated performance-car callouts, including a mixture of microfiber and Nappa fabric furniture and recommended recreation seating with additional bolstering. Tech, infotainment, and driver assist The infotainment system holds over from non-AMG GLC designs, indicating it provides a 12.3-inch electronic tool group and an 11.9-inch touchscreen. Both tend to be freestanding, aided by the touchscreen angled somewhat toward the motorist to produce an even more cockpit-like experience, based on Mercedes. Cordless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as well. Stephen Edelstein/Top Reviewing The screen setup and underlying Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) operating system are similar to other recent Mercedes models, such as the S-Class and C-Class sedans. As in those vehicles, it’s hard to find fault with the interface, which uses what Mercedes calls a “Zero Layer” arrangement that eschews menu pages for small widgets displayed side by side, or the graphics. Instead of traditional dials, for example, the instrument cluster uses a cool wave pattern for the tachometer. Mercedes’ voice control is also excellent, so much so that we ended up using it by default instead of fiddling with the touchscreen. It’s hard to find fault with the infotainment interface. The GLC63 also adds a
built-in data logger, dubbed AMG Track Pace, that can record lap times and data traces for things like steering angle and brake pedal use at racetracks. That kind of data can be useful for improving driving technique and shaving tenths of a second off lap times, but we doubt many owners will take a luxury SUV to a racetrack and make use of this feature. Like the rest of the GLC lineup, the GLC63 includes expected driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep help, however won’t get a hold of any cutting-edge tech like Drive Pilot system today moving call at minimal places in the Mercedes S-Class and EQS. This vehicle only is not about this. All the technology when you look at the GLC63 adopts making the driving knowledge much more concerning, perhaps not less. Driving knowledge A complex powertrain tends to make great usage of both gas and electrical energy. It begins with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor that on it's own creates 469 horse power and 402 pound-feet of torque, with a tiny electric engine to help keep the turbo rotating at power-producing rates. This will make it the absolute most effective series-production four-cylinder motor on earth, based on Mercedes. Stephen Edelstein/Top Reviewing The gas motor, which will be combined to a nine-speed automated transmission, can potentially run the vehicle on it's own, but Mercedes in addition included a power engine mounted in the back axle along side its very own two-speed transmission and a limited-slip differential. A 6.1-kilowatt-hour battery power permits 107 horse power of constant production with this engine, or 201 hp simply speaking blasts. Combined production is 671 hp and 752 lb-ft of torque, or 168 hp and 236 lb-ft above the final GLC63 got from the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Mercedes claims the GLC63 will achieve 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 3.4 moments. For research, the GLC63’s primary opponent, the BMW X3 M, gets 503 hp from a non-hybrid powertrain in top competitors kind. But despite an important energy benefit, the Mercedes is 0.3 moments faster versus BMW. Both have actually top-speed governors, aided by the Mercedes restricted to 171 miles per hour additionally the BMW achieving 177 miles per hour aided by the recommended M Efficiency Package. whenever unleashed, the GLC63 seems remarkable adequate to justify the AMG badge. Regardless, a sub-4.0-second operate from zero to 60 miles per hour remains impressive regarding car, aside from an extravagance SUV. Additionally impressive may be the selection of equipment Mercedes always result in the GLC63 manage less like an SUV plus like a sports vehicle. Transformative suspension system may be made luxuriously smooth or sports-car company, and a dynamic roll stabilization system keeps the human body from tilting over in sides. Rear-axle steering and beefed-up brake system (with 15.4-inch front side and 14.6-inch back rotors) come also. Between the mixture of gas and electrical power, drive settings, and specific configurations for such things as suspension system, steering body weight, and regenerative braking, this really is a vehicle of several characters. it is feasible to dial every thing down and produce an appropriate cruiser hardly perceptible as a performance vehicle, or drive-in electric mode with all the framework configurations in hardcore mode for a sporty EV-like knowledge. If you decide on the many hostile configurations, you obtain an eager, snorting pet that is like it is tugging at its leash whenever you’re obligated to trundle through a tiny city at reasonable rates. whenever unleashed on a twisty roadway, the GLC63 seems remarkable adequate to justify the AMG badge. However it’s nearly because razor-sharp as old-fashioned overall performance SUVs like BMW X3 M and Porsche Macan, which saps self-confidence. Others German overall performance SUVs feels smaller and less heavy than they really tend to be, yet not this Mercedes. And even though the
plug-in hybrid powertrain is a remarkable technical accomplishment, it is not really charming. Full-throttle speed does not feel because intense once the figures advise, and rather than the classic noises of an inside burning motor or perhaps the stark silence of an EV, the GLC63’s sound recording is an odd mixture of muted fatigue noises and whines and whistles from the a number of other technical elements. Gas mileage, electric range, and security Fuel economic climate and electric range quotes weren’t offered at the full time of book, nonetheless it’s safe to state the GLC63 is much more about overall performance than effectiveness. And as it’s really the only plug-in vehicle with its competitive ready, additionally the design it replaces had a twin-turbo V8 ranked at only 17 mpg combined, the club is quite reasonable. Safety rankings may to-be determined, once the Insurance Institute for Highway protection (IIHS) and nationwide Highway visitors protection management (NHTSA) hadn’t introduced any for newest GLC designs during book. Whenever those security rankings do come, it is uncertain if rankings for smaller GLC designs will carry-over into the GLC63. How DT would configure this vehicle Mercedes does not provide many choices beyond paint colors, rims, and carbon fibre trim, but that is perhaps not really the only concern to inquire of when contemplating an AMG GLC63. This will be Mercedes we’re speaking about, and this plug-in crossbreed overall performance SUV will share a crowded showroom along with other designs revealing some significant components. The exact same plug-in hybrid powertrain is employed when you look at the AMG C63 S E Efficiency sedan. Meaning you continue to get 671 hp, in a lighter sedan human anatomy with a reduced center of gravity. That sacrifices some cargo area, and rear-seat guests will undoubtedly be only a little less comfortable, nonetheless it’s the most obvious option with regards to operating characteristics. Stephen Edelstein/Top Reviewing By the full time the GLC63 achieves showrooms, Mercedes will have an AMG GLC43 design readily available. This really ditches the electric area of the GLC63 powertrain, maintaining the gas motor as a standalone energy supply. The GLC43 nevertheless boasts 416 hp and can do zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.7 moments, based on Mercedes. it is perhaps not area of the electrified zeitgeist, nonetheless it could be much easier to stay with versus dauntingly complex GLC63. The GLC63 presents a middle surface between AMG’s standard overall performance vehicles and EVs. Although it’s alot more entertaining than AMG’s just present all-electric SUV — the AMG EQE SUV — it is nevertheless perhaps not an upgraded to get the best internal-combustion overall performance SUVs. It monitors containers with a strong gas motor and plug-in crossbreed system, in an easy method that produces the GLC63 feel just like a placeholder until even more appealing all-electric overall performance vehicles arrive.
