Friends, I have failed you all. I've seen a lot of posts over the last week with a lot of great biographical detail about many of the flyers and aircrew who've been name-dropped so far in Masters of the Air - and I haven't seen a single thing about the one name that is directly in the center of this blog's lane.

In Part 2, returning from their mission to Trondheim, Cleven and Egan walk into the Interrogation hut and Egan accepts a cup of coffee from a woman he thanks as Tatty. Later on, at the dance, James Douglass remarks that he will be 'coming in hot' on one of the American Red Cross women on the other side of the room, and one of his friends asks "General Spaatz's daughter? Or the other one?"

Katherine "Tatty" Spaatz was a member of the American Red Cross Clubmobile service and the daughter of General Carl "Tooey" Spaatz, who commanded the Eighth Air Force on its move to England. (General Spaatz later moved to overall command of the entire Army Air Forces in the Europe Theatre of Operations, or ETO. He is, as the kids say, rather important.)

But we're not talking about him here. We're talking about her.

Katherine was 22 years old when she arrived in Europe with the Red Cross. (One of her traveling companions that trip was Kathleen Kennedy, daughter of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph P Kennedy Sr., also coming to serve overseas with the ARC.)

The American Red Cross's mission in Europe had many facets during the Second World War - in addition to activities we might think of today, like collecting blood, providing disaster relief at home and running first aid seminars, they were responsible for collecting and distributing packages for Prisoners of War.

They also operated large canteens like the Rainbow Corner club, a recreational facility in London where soldiers on leave could get a room for the weekend, a bite to eat, and a number of other amenities. Smaller clubs called Donut Dugouts provided a space where a serviceman could always be assured of a cup of hot coffee, a donut, and a pretty girl to talk to, specially recruited for being friendly, fair, approachable, and specially trained to be the girl next door overseas. In addition to these more permanent installations, they also operated the Clubmobile service, a mobile version of their popular Dugouts that moved operations into retooled Green Line Bus Company buses to take donuts and a taste of home to the front line.

Tatty, as she was called, worked on the Clubmobile "North Dakota" along with Julia "Dooley" Townsend, Virginia "Ginny" Sherwood, and Dorothy "Mike" Myrick. She also worked for a time in a more permanent post at the USAAF base at Snetterton Heath, and was later sent to France. This is Heinrich Wittgenstein, a German Night Fighters ace, timeline:

1916: He was born in Copenhagen

1932: He joined the Hitler Youth

1933: He became a Kameradschaftsführer (group leader).

1933: Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor

1933:  From Easter until fall of 1933 he led the group's military-sports activities as a Wehrsportleiter

1934:  He led the work unit 2/1/113 (Gefolgschaft) and received further pre-military sports training at the different camps of the unit 113 (Bann) and at the Regional Leaders' School (Gebietsführerschule)

1935: He received his Abitur from the Realgymnasium, a higher education facility, in Freiburg in Breisgau.

1937: Wittgenstein decided on a military career and joined the 17. Kavallerie-Regiment (17th Cavalry Regiment) in Bamberg.

1937: He transferred to the Luftwaffe in the summer and, in October, he was accepted at the flight training school in Braunschweig. 

1938:  He received his officer's commission and was promoted to Leutnant (second lieutenant)

1939: The Second World War began.

1940: Wittgenstein experienced his first combat action on the Western Front in the Battle of France and, later, during the Battle of Britain.

1940: He received the Iron Cross second class.

1940: He received the Iron Cross first class.

1940-41: Wittgenstein returned to pilot school and took his Luftwaffe Advanced Pilot's Certificate 2

1941:  In preparation for Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, his unit moved to Eichwalde in East Prussia.

1941: Wittgenstein transferred to the night fighter force. By this time, he had flown 150 combat missions.

1941:

1942: Wittgenstein had left KG 51 by January, after he had volunteered for the night fighter force and been appointed Staffelkapitän (squadron leader).

1942:  He claimed his first nocturnal victory.

1942: Wittgenstein received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes) on 7 October 1942, after 22 aerial victories.

1943: Wittgenstein was moved to the Eastern Front in February 1943 after he had been appointed Gruppenkommandeur (group commander) of the IV./Nachtjagdgeschwader 5 (IV./NJG 5—4th Squadron of the 5th Night Fighter Wing) on 1 December 1942.

1943: He was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of the II./NJG 3.

1943: Wittgenstein became the 290th recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves  after 54 aerial victories .

1943: Wittgenstein was ordered to take over command of the II./Nachtjagdgeschwader 2 (II./NJG 2—2nd Groupe of the 2nd Night Fighter Wing).

1944: He was appointed Geschwaderkommodore (wing commander) of NJG 2 ; he had already reached 68 aerial victories.

1944: He died on January 21st.

1944:  He was posthumously awarded the 44th Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.

On the subject of Terrible, But Great, I updated the first chapter with this information, but I think it'd be good to say it here.

This month, I came to the realization that TBG will have five arcs. We've finished Arc One, which I affectionately call "Dumbasses to Friends." It covers chapters 1 to 22 and occurs from August 30th, 1942 to October 31st, 1942.

We're currently in Arc Two (Falling For You), which covers chapters 23 to 49 and occurs from November 1st, 1942 to February 28th, 1943.

The following arcs are a little more iffy on the chapter count, but I know the conflict and the story that's to take place in Arc Three and Arc Four, with Arc Five still being fleshed out.

Arc Five: "Versus the World" | Chapters 96? to 118? | September 1st, 1943 to August 31st, 1951

I know the ending. I know the lines.

I'm driven and devoted to writing Terrible, But Great this year. I've already written 47,000 words this month and will reach 50,000 words by the end of the month - I completed Nanowrimo without even trying.

And I don't plan on stopping any time soon.
