I am officially giving in to my impulse to watch supernatural, but like I don't think i can do fifteen seasons, so I'm looking for advice. I watched the first couple of seasons like, years ago, but i am basically only coming back because of the deancas fandom on tumblr these past few weeks. do you have any seasons you would start with, any episodes i should watch, etc.
dkjasjldfdklsfdlk like 2 years ago i was working on a list of spn episodes that would omit a lot of the bad writing and filler. i only made it to season 7 but i’ll drop the draft under the cut and maybe i’ll finish the rest of it after the semester is over
seasons 1-3
ok so the thing about the early seasons is that spn is an evolving beast. this is part of what makes the show fascinating and compelling, but it also makes binge watching it weird as hell. it was a very different show in 2005 than it is today in 2018 (holy shit). the tone is different, the monsters are different, even the way the show LOOKS visually is very different. it’s also much less focused on an overarching plot and the episodes tend to be more self-contained, so you can safely skip many of them.
full disclosure: i actively dislike the early seasons because i think they’re dank and dark and ugly as hell, so i have little memory of the episodes i’m about to recommend to you here lmao. some people feel the exact opposite and will tell you that the only time spn was actually any good was in its first couple of seasons and it’s sucked ever since. and i will concede that the early seasons might, technically, be “good.” however, they are not valid. ahem. anyway:
season 1 - meet the winchesters
*1x01, Pilot. it sucks imo but it’s the pilot
1x09, Home. missouri mosely is in this one, but it can be skipped if you’re in a rush
1x11, Scarecrow. meg’s first appearance
1x12, Faith. this episode gets referenced often and is a significant one for The Brothers.
*1x14, Nightmare. sam has plotty visions
*1x16, Shadow. john returns and so does meg
1x17, Hell House. the tulpa episode and the first appearance of the ghostfacers. skippable, but why would you
1x18, Something Wicked. john is not a good father
the final three episodes of the season set up the plot for season 2, so they’re worth watching if you want to know what’s going on.
season 2 - a conga line of demon deals, part i
*2x01, In My Time of Dying. picks up where the final of season 1 left off. tessa’s first appearance
2x02, Everybody Loves a Clown. ellen harvelle’s first appearance
*2x05, Simon Said. sam’s powers are partially explained
2x08, Crossroad Blues. first appearance of hellhounds
*2x10, Hunted. continues sam’s psychic children arc from 2x05
2x14, Born Under a Bad Sign. feat. jo and meg. if you like jo watch 2x06
*2x15, Tall Tales. first appearance of gabriel, currently masquerading as a trickster god
the last two episodes make up a two-parter finale that pulls together the plot and sets up for season 3, so probably watch those
season 3 - a conga line of demon deals, part ii
*3x01, The Magnificent Seven. who let the demons out? (woof woof)
*3x02, The Kids Are Alright. first appearance of lisa braeden and ruby
3x04, Sin City. ruby antics; the colt is introduced
*3x09, Malleus Maleficarum. the ruby backstory episode
3x10, Dream a Little Dream of Me. the bobby backstory episode. if you like bela, watch 3x03 and 3x06 too, and make sure to hit up 3x15
*3x11, Mystery Spot. gabriel returns to torment the winchesters. simultaneously one of the funniest and most brutal episodes of spn, has been HEAVILY memed, definitely watch this one
3x12, Jus in Bello. bela is there, ruby is there. if you like henrikson, go back and watch 2x12 and 2x19
3x13, Ghostfacers. gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day
*3x16, No Rest for the Wicked. it’s the finale, duh
seasons 4-5
seasons 4 and 5 are when shit starts getting cosmic, with the show actively working towards an endgame. more episodes are tying into the plot as opposed to being stand alone monster-of-the-week. but the most important thing is that castiel is finally, finally gonna grace your screen
season 4 - gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day, part i
*4x01, Lazarus Rising. pamela barnes’ first appearance. cas walks in lookin like a bird of paradise
4x02, Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester. cas crashes dean’s dreams
*4x03, In the Beginning. a time travel episode; mary and john’s backstory
4x06, Yellow Fever. dean catches ghost flu and it gives him anxiety
*4x07, It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester. uriel appears, calls humans “mud monkeys,” plans to smite whole town
4x08, Wishful Thinking. the one with the teddy bear. skippable, i included it for the memes
*4x09, I Know What You Did Last Summer. anna appears
*4x10, Heaven and Hell. the angel drama from last episode continues
4x14, Sex and Violence. the one where dean is manipulated by a male siren. can be skipped but it’s insane so why would you
*4x15, Death Takes a Holiday. tessa and pamela return
*4x16, On The Head of a Pin. dean’s hell trauma episode. cas takes a step towards rebellion. definitely recommend watching this one, but big TW for torture
4x17, It’s a Terrible Life. the one where dean drinks health shakes
*4x18, The Monster at the End of This Book. the chuck episode
yeah, you’re gonna wanna watch the whole rest of the season, basically. it’s all relevant and for the most part pretty engaging
season 5 - team free will
*5x01, Sympathy for the Devil. cas’s first death, but far from his last. chuck returns and becky rosen the wincest shipper (yes, really) debuts
*5x02, Good God, Y’all. cas searches for god, the harvelles return
*5x03, Free To Be You and Me. funny and sweet, with cas and dean both showing their softer sides, destiel stans do NOT skip this one
*5x04, The End. absolutely depressing as fuck but you gotta. also, pink satiny panties
5x08, Changing Channels. the one with dr sexy. gabriel returns. as funny as mystery spot but less brutal, 10/10 do recommend
5x09, The Real Ghostbusters. the one where they go to a spn fan convention
*5x10, Abandon All Hope... crowley’s first appearance
*5x13, The Song Remains the Same. another time travel episode. anna breaks bad
5x14, My Bloody Valentine. equal parts goofs and tremendous gore, feat. naked cupid and a horseman of the apocalypse
*5x15, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. jody’s debut episode
5x17, 99 Problems. the whore of babylon and a drunk cas. lisa reappears
*5x18, Point of No Return. “i gave everything for you.”
*5x19, Hammer of the Gods. lucifer comes for the pagan gods, gabriel “dies”
*5x21, Two Minutes to Midnight. the conga line of demon deals marches on
*5x22, Swan Song. the apocalypse
seasons 6-7
the apocalypse has been averted, but the ever-present threat of cancellation hasn’t. spn attempts to find a new path after the conclusion of the apocalypse arc, with mixed results. personally i’m just glad the sets are properly lit now
season 6 - a burning ring of fire
there’s some shit with like.... the brothers’ grandpa in this season that basically doesn’t matter and is never mentioned again so just don’t worry about it
*6x01, Exile on Main Street. sets up the season, so you should probably watch
6x02, Two and a Half Men. the bros take care of a baby
*6x03, The Third Man. cas returns, we meet balthazar
6x04, Weekend at Bobby’s. not essential but a good episode that focuses almost entirely on bobby
6x07, Family Matters. watch to find out what the heck is going on with sam
*6x10, Caged Heat. meg is back and she’s hitting on cas
*6x11, Appointment in Samarra. ooooooooooo death
*6x12, Like a Virgin. introduces eve
6x15, The French Mistake. the one where they go to our universe and spn is just a television show. on par with mystery spot and changing channels, do recommend
*6x17, My Heart Will Go On. cas breaks all the rules
*6x19, Mommy Dearest. a plotty episode about eve and her diabolical schemes
*6x20, The Man Who Would Be King. “we can fix this, cas” “dean, it’s not broken!”
6x21, Let It Bleed. the dean/lisa subplot comes to an end
*6x22, The Man Who Knew Too Much. the one where cas becomes god
season 7 - gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day, part ii
*7x01, Meet the New Boss. cas fucks up big time
*7x02, Hello Cruel World. sera gamble fucks up big time. also, jody is back
7x04, Defending Your Life. watch if you miss jo
*7x09, How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters. the one where the leviathans are capitalism
7x10, Death’s Door. the one where bobby dies but won’t move on
7x11, Adventures in Babysitting. sam meets krissy chambers. skippable, but in this house we love & support krissy chambers
7x15, Repo Man. this one is technically skippable but it goes so hard and the twist is so fucked up i recommend it anyway
*7x17, The Born-Again Identity. cas returns to save the show from cancellation yet again. i actually kind of hate this episode lol but there are reasons why it sucks--the backstage antics behind it are insane and some... Things... were cut. i recommend reading what this post has to say about it
7x18, Party On, Garth. absolutely not required viewing but nice if you need some comic relief in this shitstorm of a season
7x20, The Girl With The Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo. charlie bradbury’s first episode!
*7x21, Reading is Fundamental, Kevin’s first episode. also features “crazy!cas,” a concept which is about as horrendously executed as you might imagine. just grin and bear it, it does get better
the final two episodes wrap up the season and set up season 8, so do watch them

Legacies 2x06 ending...
So I’m seeing a lot of people be very upset about how Legacies 2x06 ended with none of Hope’s friends coming to see her. (But we did get that Mikaelson reunion clip)
Not to be controversial but I don’t agree.
I’m not saying don’t be upset or whatever, I’m just saying that I don’t agree that none of Hope’s friends cared about her in the end of that episode because the way I saw it...everybody was kinda preoccupied.
M.G. - Was busy telling Lizzie that Sebastian was real.
Lizzie - Was having a heart to heart with Josie and learning that her mental state was fine (or at least better than she thought) by finding out Sebastian was real.
Josie - Was with Lizzie in that heart to heart, sorta met Sebastian, was sorting things out with Landon
Rafael - It’s a 50/50 on this because he’s clearly glad she’s back but doesn’t wanna be near her which...I guess I get but at the same time a complete cut-off is kinda extra Raf.
Alaric - Was busy not getting arrested with the Sheriff.
Kaleb - Was helping Alaric out with compelling the Sheriff and probably trying to get his sister home.
Landon’s the only one who has a valid argument but even then I don’t think it’s a matter of he wasn’t happy that Hope was back but more upset that she waited so long to tell him that she existed. And it’s so not a black and white situation because it sucks on both sides. For Hope it’s gotta be wicked painful to be forgotten by the world especially your friends, your family and your love especially when you’re a person that has a hard time getting close to people which she is. Furthermore, she had to watch said love of her life move on with a friend of hers but couldn’t really retaliate because no one’s truly at fault because no one remembers. But on the other hand, on Landon’s side, imagine because stuck with this random hole inside your heart, your brain, whatever and having no idea what is or how to fix it for months and by the time you’re starting to kinda be okay again (after continuously killing himself for half a summer mind you) a random chick that feels not so random shows up and turns out she’s the answer to that hole inside him and knew what they were to each other and still didn’t tell him which could be seen as some sort of rejection or something I don’t know but it doesn’t get any easier because there’s another girl that he was falling for only to get hit with all these feelings that he didn’t even know he had.
Just...yeesh. It sucks for both of them but that’s just my two cents on the whole ‘no one appreciates Hope’ thing. I don’t think no one appreciates her. But life has gone on without her (that’s the entire main plot of season 2) and remembering her wasn’t just gonna be like a reset button. It’s gonna be messy. But I have hope for them...pun not intended.

Just because I love your writing so much and I'm feeling soft, would you be willing to write a short little fic about Nicole taking care of Waverly on her period?
Tumblr media
These two went pretty well together, so I combined them.  I hope that’s okay.
I’m sorry these are taking me so long, but I promise I’m still working through all of them, however slowly it might be.
Also, once again, I demonstrated my inability to write a “short ficlet.”  This one is very close to 5k words.  WHOOPS.
—–
Set during Season 2, after the events of 2x06, but before the beginning of 2x07.
—–
“…right on my front lawn.”
If disdain could take a tangible form, Mrs. Berg would be dripping it all over Nicole’s desk.  She’s been carrying on like this for over thirty minutes already, and Nicole knows that Nedley recently reminded her about the importance of protecting the ordinary, innocent citizens of Purgatory, but she’s hard-pressed to believe that this is what he’d had in mind.
“And then…”
She continues droning on, but Nicole is no longer listening.  Waverly just entered the station, heading for the Black Badge office, and Nicole can immediately tell that something is…  off.  Setting aside the fact that she’s over an hour late, Waverly’s hunched forward as she walks, her eyes downcast, and the bag she has slung over her shoulder seems like it’s weighing her down in more ways than one.  Her entire body sags under the burden of it, and it looks like she’s dragging ass so badly, Nicole is sure she’s leaving tracks behind her.
There’s usually only one thing that can harrow Waverly to this extent, but given the recent pregnancy revelation, Wynonna has actually been on her best behavior the last couple of weeks.
That only leaves…
Nicole subtly glances at the calendar on her desk to confirm her suspicions:  it’s that time of the month, and from the looks of it, Mother Nature is dragging Waverly over the coals this time around.
All Nicole wants to do is go and take care of her disheveled girlfriend, but instead, her attention snaps back to Mrs. Berg as her spiel finally draws to a close.
“And that is why I’d like to file a formal complaint against Ms. Doucette and that…  that…  hell hound of hers.”  She clutches at her farmer’s market necklace as though it’s some heirloom string of pearls.  “Honestly,” she continues to mutter under her breath, “spawn of the devil, that thing is.”
It takes all of Nicole’s finely-tuned control not to roll her eyes right in front of Mrs. Berg, and Ruthie’s blatant snort from across the room is not helping.  Ruthie and Miss Linda have been friends for over sixty years, and Rosie – Miss Linda’s springer spaniel mix – is the furthest thing from a hell hound Nicole has ever seen.  And she would know, because she’s pretty sure she had a run in with a real hell hound out behind the old boot factory a couple of months ago.
Still, Nicole knows she has to keep a straight face and take this complaint just like she would any other.  Nedley told her he had big plans for her future, and part of being a good Sheriff is knowing how to keep the peace for all of her citizens.  Even the ones who think they’re somehow above this backwater town they’ve chosen to live in.  At least Waverly is teaching her how to master the smile and wave.
It’s perfect for situations like this.
“Of course, Mrs. Berg,” Nicole says patiently, letting her dimple show as she smiles warmly at the hag of a woman standing in front of her.  “If you could just fill this out for me.  In triplicate,” she adds, handing Mrs. Berg the complaint forms for Bylaw 23M2006, the Responsible Pet Ownership ordinance.
“You’re saying I have to fill out all of this paperwork myself?” Mrs. Berg asks, clearly offended by the notion.
“Oh, yes,” she answers.  Despite the fact that Ruthie is snickering from her desk again, Nicole manages to put on her best serious face.  “I’m afraid it’s protocol, ma’am.  All official grievances must be filled out and signed by the complainant, otherwise they’re null and void.”  She holds the forms out again, doing her best to hide the smug grin that’s fighting to break through.  “You can have a seat over there and use one of the clipboards if you’d like to get started,” she continues innocently, pointing at a row of chairs with cracked vinyl coverings lined up against the wall on the other side of the counter.
“I don’t have time for this nonsense,” Mrs. Berg scoffs, pushing the papers back in Nicole’s face.  She grabs her faux-designer handbag off the counter and practically stomps back down the hall to the front door, her high heels clacking dramatically all the way.
“Have a nice day, ma’am!” Nicole calls after her, unable to help herself, and Ruthie finally loses it completely.
“Well, that’s one way to handle the bullshit, kid,” she manages through her cackling, and Nicole doesn’t even try to stifle the little giggle that bubbles up as she slumps back in her chair, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Honestly,” she sighs.  “Rosie is the sweetest dog I’ve ever met.  The kids love her, the officers love her…  everyone loves her.”  She drops her hand and shakes her head, looking over at Ruthie.  “How could anyone want to file a complaint about Rosie or Miss Linda?”
She makes a note to bring some extra treats for Rosie the next time she checks in on Miss Linda.  Maybe even a new bandana for her to wear around her collar.
“Listen, Haught.  There’s something you’ll learn reeeeal quick about ol’ Laura Berg.”  She leans in, like she’s about to impart one of life’s greatest secrets.  “That woman is so full of herself, she’s nothing more than pompous old blowhard.”
Nicole snorts, not expecting that kind of candor.  Ruthie’s never one to hide her opinion, but she’s not usually so blunt about it.  Nicole raises a curious eyebrow, and Ruthie waves her hand dismissively.
“She’s been like this since we were in school.  Used to call her Hexie when she wasn’t around because she’s such a witch about everything.”
“Seriously?”  Nicole chokes out, unable to hide her laughter any longer.
“Still call her that most of the time,” Ruthie answers with a wicked grin.  “If you don’t believe me, just ask Mama Lou when you head over there to get your girl some coffee.”
“Wh-what?”  Nicole was certainly planning to run across to Mama Lou’s for some fresh coffee and maybe a snack, but unless she’s completely lost her mind, she’s pretty sure she hadn’t actually said anything about that yet.
“I’m not stupid, kid,” Ruthie laughs at the face Nicole is making.  “I saw you watching her from the moment she set foot in here, and she definitely looks like she could use a pick-me-up.  You know I’m not wrong.  I’ve told you before…  I know everything.”
“Right.  I’m beginning to believe that…” Nicole mumbles, her face burning red as she scratches at the back of her neck.  “Well, uh…  can I get you anything while I’m out?”
“Nah, I’m good.  Just steer clear of Hexie.  Wouldn’t want her to cast a spell on you,” Ruthie says, wiggling her fingers dramatically.
Nicole crumples up a Post-It and throws it at her on her way out.
//
“Mmmm…  You smell good…”
“Thanks,” Nicole chuckles, leaning down to kiss the top of Waverly’s head.  She’s been standing in the doorway to the Black Badge office for several minutes now, but Waverly was too focused on the books in front of her to notice.  “But it’s not me this time.”
“It’s not?”  Waverly finally looks up, confused.  Nicole can see the bags under her eyes, and immediately feels something squeeze in her chest.
“Well, I suppose it technically is,” Nicole considers for a moment before dropping a small, white paper sack on the desk next the coffee she just placed in front of Waverly.  “But I brought you some vanilla donuts from Mama Lou’s.  You looked like you could use them.”
“Thanks, baby,” Waverly says with a weary smile, sagging slightly against the desk.  “I’m just so exhausted lately.”  She digs into the sack, making an obscene noise when she bites into one of the donuts.
“I know.  It’s that time, isn’t it?” Nicole asks, taking a sip of her own coffee.
“Yeah,” Waverly sighs.  “But it’s usually not quite this bad.  I think I’m just rundown from everything else that’s going on, too.”
“Hey,” Nicole says gently.  “You’re allowed to need a break, baby.  Nobody expects you to go balls to the wall, twenty-four-seven.”  She places another kiss to Waverly’s temple.  “Can I rub your back for you?”
“God.  Yes.”  Waverly slumps forward, resting her forehead on the desk, exposing the litany of knots that run up and down along her spine and across her shoulders.  “Please,” she grunts, when Nicole’s fingers find their way to the small of her back.
Nicole spends the next fifteen minutes carefully working out the knotted muscles, the silence only broken by the occasional short gasp or drawn out moan.  She half expects Wynonna to come crashing through the door at any second with a smug look on her face when she thinks she’s performing another Wynonnus Interruptus.  For once, she’d be completely wrong, and Nicole would love to give her some shit for it.
“I hope you’re not drooling on that page,” she finally says after checking her watch.
Waverly grumbles and shoves at her playfully, but wipes the back of her hand across her mouth just the same.
“As much as I wish I could stay here and do this all day, I’ve gotta get back to work, baby.”  Nicole strokes her fingers through Waverly’s hair a few times.  “My break’s over, and I’ve got a lot to do before my shift is over.”
“Everything okay?” Waverly asks, suddenly concerned.
“Yeah, it’s nothing bad,” Nicole reassures her.  “Just Nedley giving me a few more responsibilities around here ever since he mentioned the…” her voice drops to barely a whisper, “…the Sheriff thing.”  She looks around before continuing, as if anyone else would be in the Black Badge office with them.  “I’m taking my new duties seriously.  I don’t want to let him down.”
“You won’t,” Waverly says, her voice going soft to match the look in her eyes.  She reaches out to take Nicole’s hand, squeezing it gently.  “I’m so proud of you, Nicole.”
Nicole melts a little at that, a warmth blooming in her chest.  She dips her head and smiles up at Waverly.  How did I ever get so lucky?
“I think we’re both the lucky ones, baby,” Waverly answers, still squeezing her hand, and Nicole realizes she must have said that last part out loud.  She blushes and moves to hide her face, but Waverly tilts her head up for a proper kiss, and Nicole could never deny her that.
“I’ll be right out here most of the day if you need me,” Nicole says when they break apart.  “Unless a call comes in, but Ruthie will know how to find me if it’simportant.”
“It’s okay, baby,” Waverly says, smiling softly again.  “Go be the best Sheriff-in-training you can be.”
“Shhhh…” Nicole giggles quietly.  “That’s not common knowledge, you know.”
Waverly grins and pulls her in for another kiss before shooing her toward the door.
“Gotta go make sure no one casts any spells on Ruthie and me,” Nicole says, letting a hint of conspiracy creep into her voice.
“What?  Someone’s casting spells?”  Waverly’s already half out of her chair before Nicole can raise a hand to stop her.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” she assures Waverly.  “There’s no spells.  It was just a joke we had from this morning.”
“You sure?”  Waverly narrows her eyes, but settles back into her chair.
“I promise,” Nicole says, making the Scout’s Honor sign.  “How long are you planning on working tonight?” she asks, her hand dropping to rest on the doorknob.
“I’m not sure,” Waverly sighs.  “Until I figure this out, I guess.”  Her eyes drift across the stacks of books spread out in front of her.
“Well, I don’t have any plans for the evening.  I’ll be back to keep you company when my shift’s over.”
“I’ll be looking forward to it.”
Nicole pauses in the doorway.  There’s more she wants to say, but they’re not quite there yet, so she hesitates for a moment and then blows Waverly a kiss as she pulls the door shut behind her.
There may be a lot of things she’s still learning, but there’s one thing Nicole knows for sure:  Her girlfriend works way too damn hard.
//
“I’m 10-24 from this last patrol, Ruthie.”
“10-4, Haught.  Everything secure?’
“All good.  You need anything before I head back in to call 42?”
“Negative.  Stanton is already 41, so you can do the handoff when you both get here.”
“10-4.  Mark me as 10-7 while I pick up some dinner on my way in, and then I’ll be there with these patrol logs.”
“10-4.”
Nicole had already called in her order before starting the walkthrough for the final security check on her list, so it only takes a matter of minutes for her to run in to Golden Moon, pay the bill, and pick up the brown paper sack full of fresh, hot Chinese food.
Her stomach rumbles at the smell, and she’s fairly certain Waverly hasn’t eaten anything since the donuts she brought her earlier.  She just wants this day to be over so she can get back to her girlfriend, and though she’s normally very by-the-book about these things, she allows herself to drive a little faster than usual on her way back to the station.
The handoff with Stanton goes smoothly, given that there’s not really much to catch him up on.  It had been a slow day – a rarity in Purgatory, which makes them all the more appreciated.  Nicole had not only been able to finish up several reports, but was also able to spend some time working on a list of guidelines for the new visibility directive that she and Nedley had recently discussed.  She’d even had time to complete the entire first round of security checks on the daily patrol log that she’d worked out with several of the local business owners.
By the time she’s finished filling Stanton in, Ruthie has already said her goodbyes for the evening, and Nicole pops her head in to the dispatch office to say hello to Cooper and wish him a good shift.  With all of that out of the way, she can finally sit down for some dinner with Waverly.
“Hey, baby.  I brought so–”
Nicole stops dead in her tracks, halfway through the door to the Black Badge office.  Waverly is still in exactly the same place Nicole had left her this morning, with several books open and spread out in front of her, and a pen in hand, poised above the pad of paper that she’d been scribbling notes on.
Except that she’s fast asleep.
Her other elbow is resting on the table, with her hand propping her head up, and she’s fast asleep.  Mouth hanging open, quiet little snores, and all.
It would be adorable if it wasn’t so goddamn heartbreaking.
“That’s it,” Nicole mutters, backing out of the office quietly, shaking her head as she hurries out to where her cruiser is parked just outside the door.  She slides into her seat long enough to secure the bag of takeout in her center console and turn the key in the ignition, making sure the heat is on and the vents are all pointed at the passenger seat.
Back inside, she kneels down next to Waverly, not wanting to scare her when she wakes her up.
“Hey, sleepyhead…” she says softly as she reaches out and brushes some of the hair out of Waverly’s face.
Waverly jerks awake with a snort, startled, eyes wide as she tries to place herself in her surroundings.
“Easy, baby,” Nicole coos.  “Easy.  It’s just me.”
Waverly’s body immediately relaxes at the familiar voice, her confusion melting into a sleepy smile.
“Hey,” she rasps, her throat dry.  She clears it a couple of times, grabbing the bottle of water next to her on the table.  It’s gone warm, and she frowns, wondering how long she’s been out.
“It’s time to go,” Nicole says, rising up to kiss Waverly’s temple before reaching out to close the musty tomes so she can start stacking them up.
“What?” Waverly asks, her brow furrowing.  “We can’t go yet.  I have so much work to do…”
“Not tonight, you don’t.”
Waverly opens her mouth, but Nicole presses a finger to her lips before she can say anything else.
“No arguments,” Nicole says firmly.  “All of this will still be here in the morning.  But tonight, I’m taking you home, and you’re gonna let me take care of you.”
“But, I–”
“Nope,” is all Nicole says before leaning forward to silence Waverly with a kiss.
Waverly allows herself to get lost in it for a moment, and when she finally pulls away, she nods breathlessly.
“Good,” Nicole grins.  “Now let’s get you bundled up.”
She grabs Waverly’s coat and scarf from the other chair they’re draped across, and once Waverly has found her feet and buttoned up, Nicole locks the Black Badge office behind them on the way out to her cruiser.  Waverly sighs happily when she settles into the passenger seat, soaking up the warmth from the vents that have been running this whole time.
Nicole rests her hand on Waverly’s knee, and smiles warmly when Waverly absentmindedly laces their fingers together.  It’s only a short ride to her house, and before long, she’s depositing the takeout on the kitchen table and hurrying back to help Waverly strip out of her coat and boots.
“Why don’t you head up and take a hot shower to loosen up those muscles a bit while I warm up our dinner?”  Nicole reaches out and takes Waverly’s hands in her own.  “You know where the, uh… supplies are in the bathroom, and you can grab something to wear from my dresser when  you’re done.”
“Are you sure?” Waverly asks, frowning slightly.
“Of course, baby.  Tonight is all about giving you a well-deserved break.”
“Thanks, Nic,” Waverly sighs wearily.  She pushes up on her toes to kiss Nicole’s cheek and then begins trudging up the stairs.  “I won’t be long.  I promise.”
“Take your time,” Nicole says, waving her hand as she starts back toward the kitchen.  “I’m not going anywhere.”
//
“Blankets, blankets…  Need more blankets…”
Waverly reappears on the stairs less than twenty minutes later, just as Nicole is finishing up her preparations for the rest of the evening.
Nicole loses her train of thought for a moment when she looks up and sees Waverly standing there in a baggy UBC basketball hoodie and pair of her old sweatpants with the waist and legs both rolled enough so that she’s not walking on them, still drying her hair with a towel and looking slightly more rejuvenated.
“Feeling any better?” she finally asks, shaking herself out of her stupor.  She’s seen Waverly wear her comfy clothes before, but it never ceases to have this kind of effect on her.  Every damn time.
“Just what the doctor ordered,” Waverly grins, padding softly across the floor to join Nicole at the end of the couch.  “What’s all this?” she asks, pointing at the pile of blankets on the cushion and the covered tray on the coffee table.
“Just trying to make sure you have everything you need,” Nicole answers with a shy half-shrug.
“You’re everything I need,” Waverly murmurs, stepping closer to pull Nicole into a tight hug.  Nicole’s arms immediately wrap around Waverly’s shoulders, cradling her as she buries her face in Nicole’s chest and stays there for nearly an entire minute without moving.  It makes Nicole feel warm all over as she rests her cheek on top of Waverly’s head.
When Waverly finally steps away, she settles into the corner of the couch, tucking her feet up under her.
“Whatever’s on that tray smells amazing,” she says, rubbing at her belly.  “I didn’t realize how hungry I am.”
Nicole lifts the cover to reveal a large bowl of sweet and sour soup with a little cup of peanut butter resting next to it.  There’s also a bowl of egg drop soup and an order of crab rangoon, all of which are producing little columns of steam that twist and curl around the lid in Nicole’s hand.
“I know soup is your favorite when it’s your time, so I hope this is alright for tonight?” Nicole asks hopefully.
“Baby,” Waverly says dramatically, her mouth watering.  “It’s perfect.”
“Good,” Nicole breathes, slightly relieved.  She hands Waverly a bottle of water and a couple of Midol.  “I’m just gonna go jump in the shower real quick.  Just long enough to wash away the smell of the station.  But you go ahead and get started, and I’ll be right back, okay?”
“I can wait…”  Waverly says, chewing on her lip.
“Don’t be silly.”  Nicole rolls her eyes and grabs one of the wooden TV trays she keeps next to the couch.  “I’ll just be five minutes.  Eat,” she says, pushing a spoon into Waverly’s hands after she’s taken the painkillers.
Waverly giggles as Nicole grabs the nearby blankets and wraps them around her until she’s just a bundle with arms and a face.  She sets Waverly’s soup on the tray in front of her, gives her a quick peck on the lips, and hurries up the stairs.
True to her word, she’s in and out of the shower in just over five minutes, throwing on her academy sweats and hoodie as she heads back down the stairs to join Waverly on the couch.  She pretends not to notice that one of her crab rangoons is missing, but Waverly teases that she took it as a “tribute.”  They make quick work of what’s left of their dinner and Nicole hops up to clear away the empty containers.
“Nooooo…” Waverly whines, making grabby hands at Nicole as she starts to walk by.  “I need my bonus blanket!”
“Your bonus blanket will report for duty in just a minute,” Nicole laughs, stealing a kiss as she goes.  “Just stay right there and don’t move.”
Waverly pouts, but acquiesces, and Nicole scurries off to the kitchen.  She sets some water to boil in the kettle and pours some milk into a mug and sticks it into the microwave.  It doesn’t take long before she gets a beep and a whistle in short succession.  She quickly adds her cocoa powder to the milk and leaves the marshmallows to melt across the top before turning her attention back to the kettle.
Nicole hates tea.  Hates it.  Most of the time, she can’t even stand the smell of it.
But Waverly loves tea, and Nicole loves Waverly, so she keeps an entire shelf in one of her kitchen cabinets stocked with all of the teas she knows Waverly likes, just in case she ever wants any when she’s over.
Tonight calls for something special, so she reaches to the back of the shelf and pulls out the small canister of Whittard Dreamtime instant tea she keeps hidden back there.  It’s one of Waverly’s favorites, and she orders it special from the UK, so Nicole started keeping a small stash of it on hand for special occasions.
Waverly told her once that the special blend of honey and apricot and vanilla gives it soothing properties, like a lullaby in a mug.  Nicole wrinkles her nose while stirring in the tea, much preferring her own French vanilla hot chocolate with marshmallows, but if ever someone needed a lullaby in a mug, Nicole figures Waverly deserves one tonight.
“I hope this was worth the wait,” Nicole says when she returns to the living room, carefully setting Waverly’s tea on the tray in front of her.
Waverly reaches forward to wrap her hands around the steaming mug and leans in to take a deep breath.
“You made me Dreamtime tea?” she asks, gasping slightly.  “Wow, you’re really pulling out all the stops tonight,” she grins.
Nicole’s shoulders sag slightly as she sets her own mug down.
“Sorry,” she mumbles.  “I was just trying to help.”
“Nicole,” Waverly breathes, reaching over and resting her hand on top of Nicole’s.  “Thank you.  I love it.  Everything is perfect,” she says seriously, her eyes soft and genuine.
“Yeah?”  Nicole looks back up of at Waverly, her cheeks red.
“Yeah.”  Waverly leans in and kisses Nicole, stroking her cheek gently in the process.
“I thought maybe we could just curl up and watch something tonight?”
“That sounds great,” Waverly says, leaning her head against Nicole’s shoulder.  “What do you want to watch?”
“Anything you want, baby.”  Nicole kisses the top of her head.  “I’m all yours.”
“Hmmm…” Waverly ponders, tapping her chin.  She takes a sip of her tea while she thinks.  “God, that’s so good,” she groans, her eyes slipping closed like it’s a religious experience.
Nicole can’t help but chuckle as she sips her own hot chocolate.  She reaches out and toys with Waverly’s hair, still slightly damp from the shower.
“Oh!” Waverly says, her eyes going wide.  Nicole jerks her hand away, afraid she startled Waverly or something.  “What about Big Little Lies?” she asks, her face lighting up with excitement.  “We keep saying we want to see that, but we never have time!”
“That sounds like an excellent idea,” Nicole agrees.  She loves watching shows that let her sharpen her deduction skills.  She loves them even more when she gets to watch them while snuggled up with her girlfriend.
Waverly sets her mug back down and claps gleefully while Nicole finds the remote and navigates the menus until it’s ready to go.  She glances at Waverly, who gives her an enthusiastic nod, and she presses ‘play’ before settling back into the couch next to Waverly.
They remain upright so they can both still enjoy their tea and hot chocolate, but Waverly shuffles closer until her leg is pressed along Nicole’s, and she draws random patterns on her knee while they watch the opening scenes of the first episode.
At some point, they finish their drinks, and Nicole sets the mugs aside and folds the tray down so it’s not in the way.  She has Waverly turn slightly next to her and begins running her fingers through her hair, gently parting the strands while they continue to watch.  By the time the first episode is finished, Nicole has folded Waverly’s hair into two matching French braids on either side of her head.
“Thanks, Nic,” she whispers, tipping her head back to kiss the underside of Nicole’s chin.  “Now where is that bonus blanket you promised me?”
“Bonus blanket, reporting for duty,” Nicole laughs, but stands next to the couch and holds out a hand to pull Waverly up next to her.  Waverly looks confused, but Nicole just continues to grin as she rearranges the blankets on the couch.
“How about this?” she finally asks, lying down on her back with her head propped up on the armrest.  She opens her arms wide, indicating for Waverly to join her.
Waverly’s smile could blind the sun as she climbs on top of Nicole, stretching out along her long body and resting her head on Nicole’s chest.  Nicole reaches over and pulls the blankets on top of them, making sure Waverly is completely tucked in.
“Comfortable?” she asks when everything is settled.  Waverly nods against her with a happy sigh.  “Can you still see the TV?”
“Yep.”
“Good.  You ready for the next episode?” Nicole asks, grabbing the remote.
“More than ready,” Waverly says, squeezing Nicole slightly in the best attempt at a hug she can manage from the awkward position.
“Okay, here we go.”  She hits play and reaches behind her to click the lamp off, leaving them happily snuggled up in the soft glow of the television.
Nicole keeps one of her arms wrapped around Waverly’s shoulders, making sure she’s still secure and not going to roll of the couch, and she lets her other hand gently rub soothing circles into her lower back.  Waverly’s body radiates contentment, and it’s all Nicole could have asked for tonight.
They start out discussing the episode as it plays, but it doesn’t take long for Waverly’s comments to peter out, transitioning into mumbles more than anything else.  The episode isn’t even half over before Nicole hears the first soft snore.
It melts her heart, thoroughly and completely.
She’s hooked on the show, but it’s something they really wanted to watch together, and she’d never keep going without Waverly.  Careful not to disturb the sleeping lump lying on top of her, she stretches out her arm toward the coffee table, just barely able to grab the remote with her fingertips without having to actually move from her position as a combination bed and bonus blanket.  She flips through the channels quickly until she finds the one she’s looking for.
At least the Raptors are playing tonight.

Supernatural’s Top Ten Scariest Moments
Supernatural is finally coming to an end next year. It seems simultaneously like a day that would never come and has been a long time coming. Since the first episode of this last season found Sam and Dean facing some of their oldest adversaries, we thought we’d look back at some of the original nastiest and spookiest happenings of the series as a tribute for Halloween. Seems appropriate, right? All of these moments are from the first five seasons of the show to pay homage to its planned original run.“Skin” (1x06): Learning that shapeshifters were real during the first season was cool, but it was also one of the most disgusting things we’ve ever seen on TV. That long, drawn-out scene where the shapeshifter, in the guise of Dean, of course, literally ripped all of his skin off, made all of his teeth fall out, and twisted and crunched his bones? Yeah. We could have lived our whole lives without that one.

“Skin” (1x06): Learning that shapeshifters were real during the first season was cool, but it was also one of the most disgusting things we’ve ever seen on TV. That long, drawn-out scene where the shapeshifter, in the guise of Dean, of course, literally ripped all of his skin off, made all of his teeth fall out, and twisted and crunched his bones? Yeah. We could have lived our whole lives without that one.
“Shadow” (1x16): One of the most violent episodes of Supernatural overall, we think. Literally everybody got their butts kicked and lost blood at some point in this one. Daevas are clearly nothing to mess with, not to mention Meg, who got her own temporary comeuppance during this episode.
“Something Wicked” (1x18): One of the most terrifying lore-based episodes of the series for sure. Not only did we learn more about Dean and Sam and John, but the idea of a creature that feeds solely on children to steal their life was appropriately heart-wrenching and horrifying.
“Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things” (2x04): Dean and Sam encounter a zombie under some unusual circumstances. Besides the vengeful dead girl whose injuries don’t heal, the fact that her best friend resurrected her because he still wants to bang her (yes, even though she’s dead), did nothing to make this episode less skeevy.
“No Exit” (2x06): Jo joins Dean and Sam for this hunt featuring one of the world’s most notorious serial killers turned ghost. All of the hiding in vents, cracking the ceilings, gross fingernails, and hidey-holes definitely made this episode scary. Plus the dead guy’s obsession with hair. What is it about that that freaks us all out so much, huh?
“The Magnificent Seven” (3x01): The Seven Deadly Sins made an appearance in very real demon form in this episode to rather gross effect. Particularly disturbing was the scene when they made another hunter drink drain cleaner until he died. Ew.
“Jus In Bello” (3x12): The episode when Dean and Sam get arrested and then face a police station full of demons is definitely one of the most nerve-wracking of the entire series. Perhaps what makes it one of the worst is knowing that everyone they saved in the station died when Lilith showed up later in horrible and far too prolonged ways.
“Time Is on My Side” (3x15): In pursuit of a way to save Dean’s life, Sam searches for Doc Benton, a man who discovered the secret to immortality by, uh, harvesting organs from others and replacing the ones in his own body. It’s gross, has a high body count, and honestly, it’s not a kind of immortality we think we’d be into.
“Metamorphosis” (4x04): This episode was particularly traumatizing. It showed us that anyone can become evil no matter how good their intentions are. In this case, a man became a flesh-eating monster by eating a lot of raw hamburger meat, going through some severe back spasms, and finally, yes, eating people. Blech.
“My Bloody Valentine” (5x14): Remember when Famine, one of the Four Horsemen, showed up? It got gross fast. Two people literally ate each other to death. We’re seriously still shuddering. Add in Sam’s detox from demon blood at the end and this was just an icky episode overall.

Fleabag 2x06 prediction
...what, I haven’t slept much in days, I’m allowed to be slightly delirious.
So, I said in this post that I thought the wedding would be inevitably ruined. And @morporkianhobbit just reminded me that Martin made a reference to FB fancying the priest back in 2x02.
So, what about this.
The wedding is the day after FB and the priest did the nasty. This is the same night Claire might have been off with Klare – and even if she wasn’t, she would have come home to Martin drunk, and asking where she’s been. He knows something’s up there because he confronted FB at the café, and left in a proper state.
So, what if they’re all at the church in the final scenes. We can remember 2x01, where Martin said he couldn’t wait to see how FB was going to make that family gathering all about her. And this being FB’s show, it’s pretty obviously all going to be about her at the end.
Think also to the wicked stepmother. She’s got to get her comeuppance, right? She spent all of S1 salivating over FB’s hot piece of stuff, and suggesting he was too hot to be with her. She spent 2x01 fluttering at the priest, but hasn’t even considered he might be with FB because she doesn’t see him as a man that wants anything human, he’s just the collar to her (though has definitely noticed he looks good in it). She will in no way expect her big day to be ruined by this total shagfest…and what’s more, she started it by bringing the priest into their lives to begin with. Hubris, pride before a fall, etc…because she doesn’t want to be married by a priest because she’s religious. She said at the start it’s because there’s something – I can’t remember the word, but the implication was that she just thought it was cute to have a priest officiating.
So tl;dr. Martin rocks up drunk after fighting with Claire. Or maybe Claire really didn’t come home, and he just finds her at the ceremony. Either way, Martin is the loose cannon of this series with his drunkeness and attempts at getting FB arrested. He shouts his accusation out about FB being there for the priest, not her dad and stepmum-to-be. Everyone’s like, ‘nah’…until they see the priest’s guilt, FB doing the >.> face, and Claire trying not to look mortified because she knows the truth.
Stepmum explodes in rage and jealousy, dad sees her true colours and finally sticks up for FB, saying ‘don’t talk to my daughter that way’. Stepmum pisses off and everyone’s glad, Claire has finally had it with Martin trying to ruin her sister and tells him to fuck off. Creepy Jake asks to stay with Claire (who probably also tells him to fuck off). Priest and FB are left facing the fact his career is ruined because he’s just been exposed in front of a churchful of guests…and then they go and shag again, because this is my random theory and I just want them to.
…okay, there is no way it’ll end that neatly, but I’d be okay with all of this. I would really love Flea’s family to stick up for her for once.
And I really want her to shag the priest again. Do it for us, Flea.

S01E01: Limbic Resonance.
Kalagang analyses per episode.
In the first episode of the show, we don’t get to see Wolfgang and Kala interacting yet, but we still gain a huge amount of details regarding their psychology and a pretty solid foundation for their character arcs. These retrospective, episode-by-episode analyses will not be only focused on their connection, but also on the individual transformation and path that both of them will face and overcome thanks to it. Full episode analysis is under the cut.
First of all, I want to begin with a bit of an introduction 1. by analyzing their names, the meaning behind them and what they suggest about the characters and 2. by pointing out their bond with water and what it represents to them.
Wolfgang: traditional German name made up of the words “wolf” (wolf) and “gang” (path, journey). It can be linked to the meaning “advancing at a stealthy pace” and to the image of a lone wolf preparing to storm into battle. Superficially, it refers to the closed, introverted nature of the character and the violent and dangerous environment he grew up in, which always forced him to conduct a solitary lifestyle. The “journey” he has to face is to learn how to have faith in himself and then open up and rely on others thanks to that. Kala is symbolically fundamental in making him understand that it’s not true that he “doesn’t need anyone” (2x05) and that he is unworthy of being loved. On a deeper level, though, it’s interesting to notice that the animal of the wolf has always been deeply misunderstood in cultural mythologies and depicted as a feral predator because of fear and superstitions, while in the totem tradition it actually symbolically embodies the traits of cordiality and generosity. This duality speaks also about the character very precisely: Wolfgang always gets easily judged solely regarding his external, apparent brutality, whereas his vulnerable and selfless inner nature always ends up being ignored or not acknowledged at all. Except for Kala, who can clearly see that he has “something good and beautiful” hidden inside of him that always becomes evident when they are together (2x01).
Kala: traditional Hindi name that possesses three different layers of interpretation fitting with the nature of the character. Its first meaning is “fine arts, lady, princess” and it obviously refers to the superficial display of Kala’s behavior and how she is commonly perceived by others. She has been taught her all life to behave nicely and pleasantly in order to evolve in a fine and proper Indian woman, even though this cultural indoctrination doesn’t provide her any happiness and undermines her self-worth. She constantly has to hide her true nature and conduct a life of fakeness by constructing the untrue image of an apparently perfect and socially-praiseworthy lady. “Fine arts” also gives the idea of her role in Wolfgang’s growth and gain of self-awareness: she becomes his emotional Muse. This concept is linked with the second meaning of her name: “sunlight”. Kala is often shown to be fundamental in restoring Wolfgang’s hope and appreciation for life. She enlightens his perspective and provides new colors and shades to his obscure and frightening world. In many occasions we can see her actively bringing him into the light, both physically (2x06; 2x10) and metaphorically (1x07). This lighthearted nature of her contrasts with what we learn with the third meaning, which is “dark blue, black”. Deep down, Kala doesn’t see herself as the kind of woman she pretends to be in public and has “something dark and wicked” hidden inside of her that can be freely and comfortably exposed only with Wolfgang (2x01).
Both Wolfgang and Kala also share a deep connection with water since their first breath. Water constantly brings them together. And since this trait of their connection is always present in their bond and recurring in many of their scenes in both seasons, I thought about giving a general explanation of what this element means to them at the very beginning of these analyses (so here) and then pointing out references every time water is involved in the future. This should save time and prevent unneeded repetitions from happening.
Water perfectly encapsulate the dualistic nature of their characters. It’s a transformative element that can be both clean, pure and soothing and dirty, destructive and devastating at the same time. It mirrors Kala and Wolfgang’s inner and outer personalities and reflects the contrast of “light” (limpidity: Kala’s outer and Wolfgang’s inner selves) and “dark” (turbidity: Kala’s inner and Wolfgang’s outer selves) that aesthetically and metaphorically concerns them throughout both seasons.
Water washes out the fake constructions and imperfections and reveals the true nature of things. It’s the source of a purification and healing process. Both Kala and Wolfgang are able to evoke their true essences only around each other; by triggering their connections, water symbolically leaves them naked of all their walls (cultural ones for Kala and emotional ones for Wolfgang) and destroys those fences with an uncontrolled flow. Water lets them create an intimate, genuine bond by connecting them while purified and exposed. It testifies the clean and transparent nature of their relationship.
Water is religiously associated to the gain of knowledge and wisdom. Both Kala and Wolfgang need each other in order to reach a new level of self-awareness because each of them provides the other of what they are lacking to evolve as people and characters. On many occasions they are shown to be thirsty of each other’s presence and of its empowering and enriching effect on them.
Water in many traditions symbolizes the moon. Both the water and the moon share a double face (always one side of the moon is illuminated and the other one is obscured). This is also interesting because the moon doesn’t have her own source of light but reflects the sun’s one. Which means that: the sun provides light to one side of the moon, and that side of the moon is the one that is traditionally believed to attract the howls of the wolves. The moon (water) acts as a mediator between the “sunlight” (Kala) and the howling “wolf” (Wolfgang) who develops a deep attraction to its bright side.
Water is also connected to fluidity and sexuality. This is very clear in a lot of interactions between Wolfgang and Kala where water is present in the form of sweat, snow or rain. They visit each other in the most intimate places and moments. They were both birthed in a water-filled environment and finally joined their bodies together in the same way. Also, as water, being a malleable element, can be prevented from flowing freely and be imprisoned by banks or canals, in the same way sexuality can be restrained by the nature of self or channeled in a precise direction. Kala’s demisexual nature provided a metaphorical drain through which water (sexual attraction) could be channeled towards Wolfgang only thanks to their connection.
Water grants eventually the access to a deep and mysterious underworld. The unknown and unconquerable nature of the ocean resembles Wolfgang and Kala’s impossibility of legitimately acting on their love. Their feelings are denied exposure and are conceived as a secret to be hidden in the abyss; their connection goes very deep and the more it escapes the surface, the more powerful and overwhelming it becomes, just as marine currents.
All that said, let’s finally dive into the episode (no pun intended).
We are firstly introduced to Kala when she is at her father’s restaurant. She briefly connects with Wolfgang and experiences thunder and rain. Their affinity to water is already established in this moment and will keep coming back in a lot of episodes. In Kala’s case, the actual external storm coming from Wolfgang’s sensations mirrors her internal struggle and unfavorable feelings regarding marrying a man she doesn’t love. Since, even if we don’t know that yet, she already unwillingly accepted Rajan’s hand, that storm becomes a metaphor for her emotional turmoil and the fear of letting her parents down on her hesitancy. So, Wolfgang’s physical rainy environment is symbolically conceived to have a deep access to Kala’s interiority and provide an accurate representation of her concealed, real thoughts about the marriage. From the very first moment, their connection is already intimate and self-revealing.
In this scene it’s also already clear that Kala loves her father so much that, in order for him to be really happy (since it’s clarified that this union to him is more satisfying and important than her work and studies), she’s willing to sacrifice her own happiness and keep this as a secret to him. This gesture creates a complicated dynamic in their relationship that will persist for all the two seasons. Kala behaves as it is expected from a “fine” Indian girl; by fulfilling a duty she doesn’t really desire just to provide happiness and pride to her family, she basically condemns herself to conduct a future life where her relationship with her parents will only be based on lies and dishonesty. This is why she ultimately finds comfort in visiting the Ganesha temple, because in this moment the Indian god is “the only one she can talk to”. This will be replaced in S2, where Kala won’t be able to access to the temple anymore and this role will be definitely taken by Wolfgang, “the only person she ever felt she could say anything to” (2x04). Kala’s fate, by accepting this unwanted marriage, is living a life where she constantly has to lie to everyone she physically knows. Wolfgang’s future sensate presence in her intimacy will be the only thing able to give her stability and the opportunity to give vent to her real feelings and free her real self from the chains of cultural indoctrination. In this moment, though, all she feels is that she is trapped and overtaken by both an actual and metaphorical storm.
In the next scene, we are introduced to Wolfgang, who is in the middle of a downpour. The funeral moment already highlights the contrasting essence of his bond with Kala. While she is willing to commit herself to huge sacrifices in order to ensure her dad’s happiness, he is shown to have had a horrible relationship with his own father, to the point that he has a pee on his grave. The look on his face in that moment is one of determination, fulfilment and challenge. What’s important to understand about Wolfgang is that he is living a kind of lifestyle he didn’t choose for himself. He needs to find a purpose capable of making him feel worthy and important, because he has been treated badly his entire life and therefore thinks he doesn’t deserve anything. He’s lost and trapped in a directionless and self-undermining life environment he can’t gain any happiness and satisfaction from. Kala will be the one finally providing him a purpose and a reason to truly appreciate life (this is why he will always treat her like the most important thing in the world, because to him she really is). But for now, the only thing he can do to prove himself that he has value and is not worthless is mastering what his father wasn’t able to accomplish. He wants to constantly show and testify that he is “not as stupid as my father” (1x05). This is why he feels the need to crack the same safe (S&D) his father couldn’t open on his own: 1. to remind himself that he didn’t turn out to be like him, but a better version and 2. in order for this brief success to fill the void of his pointless everyday life and make him feel as if he matters and his life has a meaning. He craves self-appreciation and proud because he was literally raised to believe he will never be enough or worth considering at all. It’s his coping mechanism.
The last Kala’s scene of the episode is set in the Ganesha temple. As I said before, it’s the only place where she can truly be herself, and this is why in S1 she will be seen here a lot. Ganesha, by being this silent and listening presence, provides her of assurance and understanding. It’s interesting to notice that, since the god himself clearly can’t answer and his statue is a projection of the character’s faith, Kala turns out to be not only her own moral persecutor, but also her own pressure valve. The process of conversing with Ganesha provides her the same venting, healing effect of writing on a secret diary. It’s her coping mechanism. Here she says that she is about to marry a very important man who everyone in her society thinks of as the perfect Indian husband, but that she actually doesn’t love. “How could I say no?” she asks nearly in tears, thinking about her parents “dancing around the house”. She develops an internal moral struggle that will be the source of her character’s essence for two seasons. She is not about to enter an arranged marriage, because the man who proposed to her wasn’t specifically chosen by her parents. This conscious decision on her (which is what led her family consider this as a “love union”, despite not being such) is not the result of an imposed coercion from the outside, but of an internal sacrifice that she experiences as a necessary burden thanks to the mentality she inherited from her culture. She is putting societal expectations and her parents’ happiness above her own because she believes that this is the kind of behavior that is excepted from her in order to be appreciated and judged as “proper” and “adequate”. It’s a matter of cultural indoctrination. She is consciously making a choice that she knows will only satisfy others. In this moment Kala is truly suffering and almost ends up crying: this is not a choice she’s making for herself. She is suffocating her real self and building a superficial, fake image of a lady she doesn’t feel comfortable being just because in her societal environment there’s only room for that lady.
The last Wolfgang’s scene of the episode features him performing a robbery. The really important moment here happens when he takes a break from trying to crack the S&D safe and turns on the tv. Despite knowing how uncomfortable he feels singing in public, he states that watching music competitions actually relaxes him (probably because, as we discover in the finale episode, he used to sing a lot with his mother when he was young, which likely was the only distraction they had from the violence of his father). Here, though, the singing competition becomes a metaphor for how Wolfgang feels internally, as suggested by the comparison between the girl’s performance and his own flashback. In this memory a young Wolfgang is shown being unable to perform on stage because of his father’s general presence ― that scares him, since he was constantly abused by him — and particular attitude in that moment — that makes him feel worthless and nullified. Felix’s comment about the girl being unable to win the competition not because of her singing talent but because of her physical aspect (i.e. something irrelevant to a fair and objective judgement) mirrors young Wolfgang’s feeling of being unable to sing not because of stage fright or failure worries (he actually enjoys singing) but because of the terror of being constantly ridiculed and put down by his father. He was traumatized. The fact that the girl in tv actually ends up losing the competition is a testament of Wolfgang’s permanent inability of recovering from his internalized childhood traumas that still torment him nowadays. This finale recognition is what ultimately forces him to fulfil the need of “cracking the uncrackable” and definitely release himself from his father’s mockeries. The satisfied look on his face, once he finally opens the safe, steams not only from the concrete opportunity of collecting the diamonds, but especially from the abstract gain of a new self-worth and praise that discredit what his father always accustomed him to think about himself. He finally proved his father wrong.
That’s all for the pilot. We’ll see in the next episode, where things start to get really interesting for Kalagang.

My Top 50 OUAT Episodes
And now, as a final goodbye to OUAT, I give you this list of my personal picks for the 50 best episodes in the series, listed in order of airing. Two-hour broadcasts are counted as one here.
1. Pilot - 1x01. One of the best TV pilots of recent years due to how quickly it grabs you and emotionally invests you in its magical atmosphere and the plight of its central characters.
2. The Thing You Love Most - 1x02. Best watched immediately after the pilot, as it deals with the same story but from the dark and twisted perspective of its villain, the Evil Queen.
3. Snow Falls - 1x03. Snow and Charming are, well, charming in their first adventure together and the start of their romance, as is sweet Mary Margaret in the present day.
4. That Still Small Voice - 1x05. Jiminy Cricket of all characters gets a surprisingly dark and emotional backstory that resonates with him in the extremely intense present-day scenario.
5. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter - 1x07. Jamie Dornan gives an incredible performance as the tormented Sheriff Graham / Huntsman, all the way to the episode’s tragic conclusion.
6. Desperate Souls - 1x08. We get our first true insight into the backstory of the enigmatic Rumpelstiltskin, and Emma becomes sheriff, making this a truly pivotal episode for the show.
7. Skin Deep - 1x12. A truly subversive, twisted take on the Beauty and the Beast story, with some unexpected layers added to Rumple’s character and Robert Carlyle’s performance.
8. Red-Handed - 1x15. Little Red Riding Hood IS the Big Bad Wolf. That is awesome.
9. Hat Trick - 1x17. One of the most terrifying, surreal episodes in the entire series, with the great Sebastian Stan knocking it out of the park as the deranged Mad Hatter, Jefferson.
10. The Return - 1x19. We learn why the curse was cast in a devastatingly emotional story that adds more to the characters of Rumple and August as the season enters its final stretch.
11. The Stranger - 1x20. August’s true identity is one of the best reveals in the whole series.
12. An Apple Red As Blood - 1x21. Part 1 of the season finale, as Regina in both the past and present gears up to finish off her nemesis, with the episode ending on a huge shocker.
13. A Land Without Magic - 1x22. Part 2 of the season finale, the best finale the show ever had, and quite possibly my all-time favorite episode. Almost everything about this episode is perfect and gives you the feeling of a story coming to its end as the threads come together.
14. Broken - 2x01. A solid season opener that sets the show on an exciting new course.
15. Lady of the Lake - 2x03. Things really pick up as Team Princess is formed, Cora is established as the new Big Bad, and we get some beautiful moments between Snow and Emma that make it all the more shameful that the show utterly ruins this dynamic later on.
16. The Doctor - 2x05. Dr. Whale is Victor Frankenstein. Did NOT see that coming!
17. Tallahassee - 2x06. The first adventure that “Captain Swan” (Emma and Hook) partake in together, while at the same time we finally learn about Emma’s sad past with her ex-lover.
18. Queen of Hearts - 2x09. A thrilling conclusion to the first arc of Season 2, where we finally learn Cora’s motivations and get an epic fight between the heroes and the villains.
19. Manhattan - 2x14. This episode is a real turning point, with Emma’s ex-lover being revealed as Rumple’s long-lost son, along with several new insights into Rumple’s past.
20. The Queen Is Dead - 2x15. One of the show’s most emotional episodes, in no small part thanks to Bailee Madison’s truly amazing performance as young Snow in the flashback.
21. The Miller's Daughter - 2x16. We learn about Cora’s fascinating backstory and the true nature of her relationship with Rumple. But then she dies, and the season totally falls apart.
22. Second Star To The Right - 2x21. Finally it feels like shit is getting done, and the concept of a terrifying re-imagining of Peter Pan in the flashback is immediately captivating.
23. And Straight On 'Til Morning - 2x22. The mess Season 2 became gets cleaned up in this gripping finale, with a brilliant new story set-up laid out to be followed in Season 3.
24. The Heart Of The Truest Believer - 3x01. OUAT is truly back at the top of its game here, juggling four different plot threads perfectly and introducing its greatest villain, Peter Pan.
25. Lost Girl - 3x02. The flashback here is meh, but the present day stuff is nigh-perfect.
26. Quite a Common Fairy - 3x03. For the first time, Regina’s potential redemption feels good and genuine, and Rose McIver’s re-imagining of Tinker Bell is a delight from the start.
27. Good Form - 3x05. Hook’s backstory is amazing, and Captain Swan truly begins here.
28. Ariel - 3x06. JoAnna Garcia Swisher makes a truly perfect live-action rendition of Ariel, and the interactions between all the characters in Neverland take a truly engaging turn.
29. Dark Hollow - 3x07. Belle and Ariel, on a mission from Rumpelstiltskin, team up to fight John and Michael Darling who serve the villainous Peter Pan. Only on this show, people!
30. Think Lovely Thoughts - 3x08. The “Nevengers” truly show how far they’ve come working as a group here, and we get one of the show’s most shocking and twisted reveals.
31. Going Home - 3x11. The perfect series finale that isn’t a series finale, with the action increasingly slowing down so that you can fully appreciate the emotions. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if the show had ended right here, I’d have been completely satisfied.
32. Witch Hunt - 3x13. Just plain fun and funny, with great dialogue and great character interactions that really get you re-adjusted to these characters and to life in Storybrooke.
33. The Jolly Roger - 3x17. Quite possibly the quintessential Hook episode, showing just what kind of a person he was and how he desperately wants to be a better man now.
34. Snow Drifts / There's No Place Like Home - 3x21 / 22. After the incredible letdown that was the climax of the Wicked arc, we get this two-part finale that really embodies the magic OUAT had and never quite will again, with Emma’s character arc coming to a fitting end.
35. The Apprentice - 4x04. “The Dark One lies. The Dark One tricks”. This episode does a perfect job at re-establishing Rumple as a true villain and a schemer to be reckoned with.
36. The Snow Queen - 4x07. Quite possibly the most heartbreaking villain backstory the show has ever had, plus riveting scenes between Elizabeth Mitchell and Jennifer Morrison.
37. Smash the Mirror - 4x08. It’s overlong and the Regina and Robin subplot is complete bullshit, but everything else in both the past and present is golden. The 4A arc peaked here.
38. Shattered Sight - 4x10. The boffo comedy in this episode is cringe-inducing, but all of the serious, emotional stuff centered around the Snow Queen and her family gets me every time.
39. Poor Unfortunate Soul - 4x15. Ursula’s backstory is kind of iffy, but the effect it has on Hook and his development here is really good, as are the villains and August’s return.
40. Sympathy for the De Vil - 4x18. “Evil isn’t born, it’s made”...except in this case, where it is 100% born and takes us on a twisted tale that could pass for a good Twilight Zone episode.
41. The Broken Kingdom - 5x04. The twist of the glorious kingdom of Camelot being a kingdom literally built on sand, and its monarch a disturbed megalomaniac, is a great one. Plus, Snow and Charming actually get do something heroic after a long period of inactivity!
42. Nimue - 5x07. The actors portraying Merlin and Nimue really sell the doomed epic romance between the two, as we get the most far-back flashback in the show’s entire run.
43. Labor of Love - 5x13. This episode can be summed up as “The Nevengers are back.” That alone counters the disappointment of how blandly Hercules and Megara are portrayed.
44. The Brothers Jones - 5x15. A touching tale of brotherhood, good intentions gone wrong, self-loathing and forgiveness, plus giving Hook closure with his big brother. I just love it.
45. Firebird - 5x20. The flashback is utter tripe, but the escalation in the present-day story, the performances, and Captain Swan’s True Love test makes this episode well worth it.
46. Last Rites - 5x21. Aside from that moment with Robin, this episode is awesome, especially the Underworld scenes with the duo I never knew I wanted: Hook and Arthur.
47. The Other Shoe - 6x03. This episode embodies what the show SHOULD have become: a more light-hearted series with adventures-of-the-day starring Emma, Hook and Henry.
48. A Wondrous Place - 6x15. Hook sails on Captain Nemo’s sub, the Nautilus, alongside Aladdin and Jasmine, meeting up with Ariel and facing down Jafar. Only on this show, people!
49. The Song in Your Heart - 6x20. Because really, who doesn’t love a Musical Episode? This one centering around Emma and her marriage to Hook makes it all the more special.
50. The Final Battle - 6x21 / 22. It’s got a LOT of problems, but the ending it reaches is truly one that fits the show, and we would have been better off if ABC hadn’t renewed it afterward.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
The Price of Gold - 1x04. Rumpelstiltskin’s first showcase episode, and he’s terrifying in it.
Dreamy - 1x14. Screw the haters, I really liked this episode! It was hilarious and sweet.
The Crocodile - 2x04. Our introduction to Killian Jones / Captain Hook. It’s a good one, and I’d have liked it better had Rumple’s role in both the past and present not been so disturbing.
Save Henry - 3x09. A tad anti-climactic and the Regina focus was misaimed, but still good.
New York City Serenade - 3x12. A damn fine start to a new beginning for the show.
Rocky Road - 4x03. Elsa and the Snow Queen are both fantastic characters, both shown well here. It’s held back by the introduction of Will Scarlet, who ended up being a waste.
Darkness on the Edge of Town - 4x12. This episode gives us the visual of villains on a road trip stopping at a drive-thru. You just gotta love that! Also, the Chernabog was awesome.
Operation Mongoose - 4x21 / 22. Despite Isaac’s (and by extension, A&E’s) terrible writing, the weird situations and performances from the actors makes this an entertaining finale.
Siege Perilous - 5x03. A good old-fashioned Camelot adventure is just what I wanted.
The Bear King - 5x09. Again, screw the haters. The show needed more episodes like this, a standalone where the plot takes a pause and the side characters are allowed to develop.
Broken Heart - 5x10. The present-day plot is absolute crap, but the flashback in Camelot is really well executed, and Colin O’Donoghue is clearly having a blast playing Dark Hook.
Souls of the Departed - 5x12. Not ideal for the 100th episode, but a good start to the Underworld arc, with a lot of familiar faces returning and a great new villain introduced.
Devil's Due - 5x14. Despite her fate in this episode, it’s great to see the writers presenting Milah more sympathetically than she was before, and Hades continues to be a delight.
Our Decay - 5x16. The first episode where Zelena feels truly human instead of the cartoonish psychopath she was before, with her and Hades’ romance being legit touching.
Sisters - 5x19. While I don’t much care for the subplot with Prince James, the main plot featuring the reconciliation between Cora, Regina and Zelena is great and beautifully acted.
Strange Case - 6x04. Oh, Mr. Hyde, you left us way too soon. The episode is sadly weighed down by Rumple’s textbook abuse toward Belle, which we now know is never truly punished.
Dark Waters - 6x06. A good bonding episode between Hook and Henry, plus a great new character from the Land of Untold Stories who is actually faithful to his source material!
Heartless - 6x07. For once, Lana Parilla actually gives us an old-school Evil Queen performance, where she’s scary and truly malevolent rather than campy and over-the-top.
Mother's Little Helper - 6x16. I really like the Dark Realm, and wish that more was done with it. The reunion between long-time rivals Hook and Blackbeard is also a lot of fun.
The Black Fairy - 6x19. The retcon that Rumple was born a Savior is ridiculous, but the titular Black Fairy’s backstory actually makes her an interesting character for the first time.
A Pirate's Life - 7x02. It was nice to see Emma again, and even better to see that the Hook in this arc is actually Wish!Hook rather than the original, who is still living happily with Emma.
The Girl in the Tower - 7x14. Robin and Alice are beyond precious as a couple in both the past and the present, finally washing away the bad taste left behind by “Ruby Slippers”.
The Guardian - 7x18. It may have been late in coming, but Rumple / Weaver actually becomes interesting here as we get to explore his relationship with his newfound friends.
Homecoming - 7x21. It’s good to see several old characters again, and even better to see all the loose threads from that abominable Season 6 Wish Realm two-parter finally addressed.
Leaving Storybrooke - 7x22. Except for Rumple’s end, most of what happens following Snow and Charming’s appearance is utter shit. But.....at least the show is finally over!

Marcus Kane: Sacrifice
Tumblr media
My thoughts on the self-sacrificing nature of Marcus Kane.
I can’t think of a single instance in which Marcus Kane has ever been truly selfish. Even his aloof, colder persona in season 1A was a result of years worth of participating in a merciless system he believed at the time was saving his people. It’s the code from which they’ve operated for generations and it’s tragic to think that in trying to save humanity, he lost his own humanity in the process. It scraped away his soul, piece by piece, punishment by punishment until he’s only a shell of the man he once was. He certainly didn’t carry out the law and perform those acts because it was personally gratifying. There was never a time in which Kane ever looks pleased with himself for what he had to do and he often preceded his actions with the statement that he was "given no choice”. His sorrowful demeanor before, during and after the shock lashing is evidence enough of this. He did it though, because at the end of the day, he wants to safeguard humanity and this is the only way he knew how at the time. A necessary evil for the ‘greater good’...
He clearly maintains a façade of apathy and confidence for others, but underneath it all is a well of feeling he’s been holding at bay for years, which finally spills over after the Culling. When he makes a mistake, miscalculates and hundreds die in vain, his mask crumbles. When the construct of the law that had been his constant guide and companion for years abandoned him, he abandoned it, beginning a journey inward to tear down the walls he erected (perhaps unknowingly) and rediscover who he was and who he truly is underneath the falseness of what he had become. By the end of 2x03, the last vestiges of his old, law-abiding self is truly gone. The law had influenced his decisions one last time, but no more. Things had to change and not just for him, but for all of them and this is the source of Kane’s change as a character, allowing the selfless man at his core to shine through.
SEASON 1:
In 1x11, we see the first clear start to the trend of risking his life to save others. In the chaos after the Ark goes dark, there’s no need to maintain that façade of authority and his true self is exposed. It’s our first true look at the real Kane - one not acting as an authority figure, but just a man wanting to save others regardless of the cost to himself. He stops at nothing to save Wick and any other survivors he can find before proceeding to stay behind to clear away debris to save Jaha and the others who are trapped. His actions inspire the others to stay behind and risk their lives to help as well. Almost immediately after successfully saving Jaha, Sinclair and co. they discover people may be alive in a remote vent and he doesn’t hesitant to volunteer himself to save them - braving the sweltering heat of the cramped space to try and find more survivors, rewarded in his efforts when he finds them and Abby alive and safe.
In 1x13, Kane attempts his first major sacrifice for his people by volunteering to stay behind to die on the Ark to ensure the others make it to Earth. It’s a decision that is foiled by Jaha, who has the same idea and beats him to it, but the intention still counts. If given the opportunity, he easily would have attempted to dissuade Jaha and take his place.
SEASON 2:
At this point on his journey, some part of him feels dying is a way to atone for his sins. Dying to save the people he believes he’s hurt the only way he can think to redeem his soul. I don’t think it’s completely guilt that drives him though. Instead, his natural motivation to help has just been bolstered tenfold by recent failures and the need to redeem himself. It’s a journey he takes for himself of course, and not for the benefit of being seen fondly in the eyes of others from his acts of heroism, but to genuinely help them and find peace with himself. At this point, he also believes he has no one and his death wouldn’t matter or affect anyone either.
Due to this, he continues to risk his life in season 2 as he ventures on a dangerous mission to try and contact the Grounder’s Commander and secure peace for his people, knowing full well what the natives are capable of and he may be walking into a trap. He does it anyway though to give his people a chance for a better future on the ground that isn’t under the constant fear of death. Imprisoned with Jaha in 2x06, they’re given the ultimatum that one must die for there to be a chance for peace and Kane, once again, doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice himself for that opportunity.
He was also willing to stay behind, buried and wounded after the bombing of TonDC, to suffer and potentially die so that Abby can spend her time trying to find and save others instead of him. He doesn’t want to come before anyone else and never sees himself as worthy of being saved. I love that Abby does offer him this though: validation that he deserves to be saved too and that he matters to her. It’s the first real occasion in which anyone has shown genuine concern for him and he looks stunned by her pledge not to abandon him.
SEASON 3:
His entire rebellion against Pike in season 3 was one big sacrifice. He knows the odds are stacked against him and that his efforts will most likely ‘go South’, but he does it anyway. He does it so that someone else doesn’t have to. If he’s going to be caught and executed, then better he die than another. If someone has to get their hands dirty to pull this off, better his hands are sullied than someone else’s.
At the beginning of 3x08, Kane turns down Harper’s idea to shock lash Pike and hand him over to the Grounders as it would be ‘murder’ and ‘treason’. In the end though, that’s the only option Kane has left and is forced to concede to regardless of how he feels about it morally. Pike’s hate-fueled actions were going to destroy everything he, Clarke and others have been striving for since they landed and the safety and security of his people comes before the life of one man who, at every turn, had proven he’s unwilling to change. When his plans do fail and he’s captured, Kane accepts it (knowing it was a likely outcome) and is willing to die publicly in the hopes that it could spark a fire of inspiration in others to continue what he started. He believes in his people to do the right thing when he’s gone.
In the precious few moments Kane and Abby were granted to say goodbye in 3x09, he cuts short so that he can spare the woman he loves any additional amount of pain he can, even though we can assume spending as much time with her before he dies is all he could ever want. He forfeits any underlying desire to touch her, hold her, kiss her, tell her he loves her before he dies, in an attempt to spare her the cruel agony of a loss all too similar to one she’s already suffered. His full dedication to her well-being is on full display here, even though it’s his life that is about to be unfairly cut short.
In what’s perhaps his ultimate sacrifice yet, Kane’s actions in 3x13 were the epitome of selflessness and love. To save Abby’s life, he doesn’t hesitate to give up his own: his freedom, body, mind and soul for her with no hope of being freed. He takes the chip and condemns himself to a fate worse than death so that his love may live, even if it’s only her body that remains and her true self - the beautiful soul he loves - will forever be lost. He literally loves her more than life...
All his great acts of sacrifice definitely leave an impact, even if he is oblivious to it. He continues to blame himself for everything that has gone wrong - regardless of how much influence he actually had on it - and is perpetually plagued by self-doubt and self-loathing, not realizing the things he did accomplish and inspire: those who took part in Kane’s rebellion - Lincoln, Sinclair, Harper, Miller - loyally followed him despite the risks because they believed in him and their cause and would willingly die alongside their leader. Before his tragic death, Lincoln mentions that his own sacrifice is something Kane would do as well - recognizing that aspect in him and knowing that to die saving others is an honorable end. Lexa could see the goodness in his soul - his pure desire for peace that led to the start of their official alliance with the Grounders. Those on the Ark who stayed behind with him to try to save others and honored him when he attempted to sacrifice himself for them. Good can and does come from some of his acts and I hope he gets to see that someday. He did affect people. He did make a difference. His efforts were not all in vain...
SEASON 4+:
At this point on his journey, his sacrificial decisions are not without the weight of added consequence. He’s not alone anymore and his death would now leave a much bigger impact in his wake. He’d be leaving behind Abby - the woman he loves and is finally beginning to develop a much-deserved future with - and the family he’s cultivated with her the delinquents. There are people he loves and who love him but, though he wouldn’t want to leave behind, he’d still continue to fight and die for them if needed. I’d love to see this addressed by his loved ones eventually, showing concern for his well-being and making sure he knows just how much he means to them. I definitely think that, given the nature of this season, that something along these lines will be addressed to some degree.
His actions in life can echo in his potential death. As much as I hate to consider it, if Kane ever did die, there is plenty of foreshadowing for it in the form of his many sacrifices, potentially indicative of a destiny to die saving his people. For him, what better way to die than to save those he loves and to ensure a future for his people he wants so desperately? It would be the most fitting send-off to his character should the situation ever arise. Here’s strongly hoping it doesn’t though. He deserves to survive and carve out a life with those he loves and reap the rewards of their hard work and many sacrifices...
Marcus Kane is one of the most selfless characters I’ve ever had the privilege of witnessing. It’s such a fundamental part of his character and given due spotlight on more occasions than I’ve seen of many others. Kane is a true, selfless hero who works tirelessly to save his people and loved ones no matter the cost to himself and I adore him for his courage, respect, kindness, compassion and fortitude. Even when his efforts fail and go unnoticed, he never stops trying to do the right thing. Marcus Kane is my hero...
