I has 30 asks! :}}
@chickenmilk120
@cherrycreamfairy
The only thing that mattered to me in that trailer was Mario saying “I’m not afraid, I’ll do anything for my brother.” Their brotherhood is the only thing giving me hope for this movie-
That, and the blue shelled koopa troopa’s are interesting..
@sqirtle
The idea I had in mind is that they were magically transported to the Mario universe some how, where they ended up in the middle of a forest. They kind’a wandered for a while before finding the Mushroom kingdom. This was right after Peach was captured.
I was thinking that the toad people let them in to help them and later witnessed Mario using a fire flower. That’s when they knew these two were the hero's of legend and their quest began :0
Yes! They don’t have enough food to go around so they try to avoid waking anyone else up. That, and the fact that that Spy and Pyro don’t carry anything particularly useful to them. Nothing worth risking being seen by the camera at least.
In my AU at least, there is no Glamrock Ballora. Its just the main Glamrocks we’ve already seen. The original Ballora did exist though. :0
As for the tiger guy and mermaid gal? They are not in my AU either..
JSOKDFSLDFKMTHANK YOUUU
Not only would he not care and do it again, but he would attack Mario because he is in pain. He would take advantage of his vulnerability.
@bungerpogger
The plans I had for Luigi is that he dies to a Goomba. BUT WAIT HANG ON- THAT’S NOT FUNNY- The Goomba’s in my AU are real monsters. Luigi gets bitten by one and his entire leg gets shredded. Then the venom from the Goomba slowly makes Luigi rot from the inside out.
He rapidly begins to deteriorate over the span of a few days. Eventually he looses all his strength and is just laying on his death bed.
Mario is holding his hand and keeps telling him he’s going to be fine. Everything's gonna be okay, Luigi’s going to get better everything will be fine-
Luigi’s hand goes limp.
...
And then he gets revived by the 1-UP he had absorbed a couple of days ago. All better! :D
@genericstudios
Thank youuu!!! :DDD
I don’t take commissions or straight up “Hey draw this thing for me” stuff. Buuut, the other stuff sounds like it could be fun :}
@network-warrior-01
I think if a little kid came in and didn’t mess with anything and was just scared and crying. I feel like King Boo would show mercy and have his Boos kind’a guide them back out of the forest.
If its some bratty little kid well... I cant say he’d be patient with them.
@burgycreeper405-blog
I’m on desktop. If you click this little doo-dad here?
And then this one?
You can put literally as many pictures as you want. Its never stopped me and said there was too many images. Same thing with the orange photo option. When I fill up the 10 slots I just click the little grey camera and keep adding more drawings-
Yeah I remember trolls. Never saw world tour but I always intended to- here’s to hoping trolls 3 turns out good!
@ajthekingtheking
JSADNCTHANK YOUUUUAAAAAAA
I have! Such a bizarre game concept has no right to have such good animation and interesting (to me) character design-
XD My body is basically just grey and black goop. I can have as many arms as I want! I’ve just found having a 3rd arm to be rather convenient recently.
@crazy-scary-crazy
Thank you for understanding <:} It means a lot that even if some people don’t get it, they can still see my perspective and respect my boundaries.
@dongpuncher-666
The 1-UP has to be consumed before dying. So it wouldn’t work if you just shoved it down their throats after they died-
Also it works instantaneously. It could be literally 5 seconds before they’re about to bleed out, as soon as the mushroom makes contact with them, their body absorbs it and its energy is fully prepared to be consumed.
Also thank you! I’m glad to hear you like my content! :DDD
I’m not familiar with that character, so I didn’t write him into the AU.. <:/
@caronaro-flipaclip
OH MY GOSH I LOVE SPONGEBOB LITERALLY MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD SHOW--
Bowser wants Peach’s land. Because it is healthy and fruitful. But he has never be able to take it because Daisy and Peach’s kingdoms stand together. Its 2 kingdoms against 1.
But somehow he managed to kidnap Peach. Not sure how he did it but this meant he had the upper hand. He threatened to harm or even kill Peach if they didn’t surrender their land to Bowser.
Its right after this all starts that the Mario brothers show up and end up rescuing her.
Thank you! I’m glad you like my work! :DD But so far nah... I mostly just came back to goof around with the Octo-dads for a bit. Not much work being done on my Octonauts AUs...
When Foxy was reactivated he only went out of the basement for that first night. And Freddy guided him through blind spots in the cameras.
After that first night Foxy never left the basement. Neither did Bonnie. So Vanessa never saw Foxy and doesn’t know they’ve both been reactivated.
@multifandom-traveler
XD You can like what ever you want man! You’re never too old to enjoy your old comfort shows.
Also thank you! I’m glad you like it! :DD
aaaa thank you!!
Also its okay. Internets gonna internet. There’s always gonna be people who disrespect you for no reason. 🤷♂️
@livinwa
snffle.... t-tnk u
Awe you’re too kind, Thank you!
I have not :0 I’ve heard good things about it though!
@dumbfishiesparadise
Wow really? :0 That’s nuts!
@scrumpitouscollectorpuppy
Man, that’s an unfortunate way to find me. But its cool that you did! Also AAAA thank you!!! I’m glad you like my artwork!! :DD

Today's the anniversary for me! ✨
I know the Mario Movie was released on April 5th 2023, but back then I was seeing the Holy Week processions with my dad, so I didn't get to go to the cinema until April 8th, which was a Saturday, and that was when everything changed for me 😌💚❤️
This is going to get a bit long, personal and emotional, so it's totally fine if you'd rather not read it! 💖
As I've mentioned, this movie saved my life simply because I was in a terrible place when it came out. Admittedly, I had been feeling a bit better that week thanks to the fact I was going out every day and was distracted and such, but my mind was still not totally... fine.
Until, at 8PM, the Mario Movie finally started and I spent the next hour and a half with a silly smile on my face, feeling like a little kid again and experimenting lots of feelings and emotions I hadn't felt in many months. Happiness. Joy. Laughter. A warm heart. Tension. Pure emotion. Excitement. Nostalgia. The urge to cry, though not from sadness.
And the need to get those cute brothers off the screen and give them each a big bear hug.
(Posted this edit on my Instagram account last Friday.)
Mario and Luigi did really save my life. I had already fallen for them long ago, when I was 13 and played Superstar Saga on my GBA, since that was the very first game that made me see these two as endearing and charming characters with a beautiful sibling bond based not only on love, but also trust, laughter and comfort.
And, in all honesty, seeing this movie, seeing that bond translated into it, was totally a dream come true. Aside from the M&L games, we don't really get to see much of these two taking care of each other (please correct me if I'm mistaken!). Also, I'm a 90s girl, so I had been wanting a good animated Mario movie since... I honestly can't remember. All I know is I used to watch the cartoons (specifically the one based on Super Mario Bros 3), and then I ran into the live action movie from 1993 and... Welp. Let's just say I'd rather forget it 😬 (Sorry if you did like it, it simply was NOT my cup of tea.)
And then this movie was announced, and every new trailer made me feel more and more hyped, and reminded me of my love for the Super Mario franchise. I had already been hyperfixated on it back in 2013-2016, when I played Dream Team and fell even harder for them (especially Luigi), and when I finally got to see this movie, that obsession came back stronger than ever.
I felt like a little child again. I went back to play my old favorite games. I listened to the ost on loop for months, and it ended up becoming my most listened album on Spotify last year.
And I also felt the urge to write again.
Writing has always been an important part of my life. I started at 8 and I simply couldn't stop. To me, it is like breathing, so when I spend some time away from writing, I'm not exaggerating when I say I feel a physical pain on my chest. And due to the bad place I was in, I had been away from it for way too many months.
It turns out all I needed was a dose of brotherly love in order to feel my fingertips tingling again with the urgent need to start writing.
So yeah. There are many things I have to celebrate today and to be thankful for. First of all: I'm alive, and happy, and better than ever, still struggling with anxiety and fears but feeling way better than I'd felt in the years before this film came out. I feel emotion, and joy, and will to continue living and enjoying life and fangirling and being myself. I feel connected to Mario and Luigi and my heart simply warms up every single time I think about them (which is 24/7 tbh).
And I'm writing again! 2023 was the year I've written the most in my entire life, and I owe it to this wonderful movie, and so far I've continued to write this year too, and that's also thanks to Mario and Luigi.
And of course, and more importantly, this film has led me to meet all of you, beautiful people, and I honestly couldn't be more grateful 🥹🫂💖 With you I can fangirl and scream and cry and be myself, and that's why I felt like sharing this with you guys, because I know you understand and share the feelings I've experimented these months since I first saw this movie. I love each and one of you with all my heart 💖💖💖
And after talking non-stop, I believe I kinda feel like finally showing my face here (the real one, not this one 😂), so... Here I go! 🤭👇
This is me today! 🤭 With lots of Mario stuff as you can see, and I even painted my nails to match the main characters! 💅
The blue is for Toad, the pink is for Peach, green and red for Luigi and Mario (obviously) and black for Bowser since he was played by Jack Black! 😁
Admittedly, I'm not very good at painting my nails because I'm not into makeup and such, but I do like to see them all painted, I think they look beautiful 🥰 Last year I used to paint them red and green all the time since I went not once, not twice, but thirteen times to see this movie, and every time wearing a different shirt 🤭 Though the one I'm wearing today is the one I wore exactly one year ago, as you can see here! 😁
I literally cannot remember when or where I bought it, but it was simply PERFECT to wear to go see this movie 😁 And you bet, when the Toad guard said that quote from the first Super Mario game, I went all silly in the cinema: "OMG my shirt!!!!!" 😂😂😂
And here are some pics from some of the other twelve times I went, and you can get a look at some of the Mario shirts I own! I may go and show them all together in a different post, and maybe also the earrings since I own a lot: red shrooms, superstars, fire flowers, green shrooms... Would you like that? 🥰
Now that I see it, I look a bit scared on the first one 😂 The green shirt I'm wearing on the second one is pure GOLD, and on the third one I kinda felt like I was taking a picture with Mario himself 😂😂😂
I did own some Mario merch before the movie came out, but last year I went and bought tons of it, including shirts, earrings, and of course plushies! 🤭
They look like a cute little family OMG aren't they ADORABLE I love them all so so much 😭❤️💚✨
So this is it! This is my little celebration of the first year since I saw for the first time the movie that saved my life 🥰 In all honestly, I would've liked to bring a fic or something, but as you all know, I went through a very hard Holy Week and I'm still not feeling totally ready to get back to writing (even though I've gotten a couple new ideas, for which I'm deeply grateful).
But I hope sharing my experience and feelings (and my face! 😂) is enough for this year, and let's hope I can bring a new Mario story to share with you guys very soon! 🥰
I love you all so so so so so so so so so so much!!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖

mario movie predictions
(for context I’m writing this before the trailer has been released)
this will not be a “good movie”
unfortunately, it also won’t be bad in interesting ways
you’ll definitely be able to tell that many people who worked on this care about the source material. background details will be filled with deep-cut references to things from across the whole franchise, including things nintendo hasn’t acknowledged in decades
those will be completely overshadowed by the lore references in the script, which are the most Dorkly-ass nostalgia bait “hey remember Mario?” type gags a committee of soulless writers could come up with
it’s (at least partially!) an origin story, obviously, but they’re not allowed to deviate from established “canon” enough to come up with anything interesting. the best they can do is reference relatively lesser-known games like Wrecking Crew. they won’t reference Mario Bros. (Game & Watch) because they’re cowards.
it’s a comedy, but they only have like five good jokes. all five of those jokes will be featured in the trailer, so a bunch of people who don’t know how trailers work will think it looks good
the majority of the gags are jokes you’ve heard a million times before. peach sure gets kidnapped a lot! did you know mushrooms are also drugs? if you’re the Mario Brothers does that mean your name is Mario Mario? hey what if “cake” is a euphemism for something!! mario eats mushrooms he’s on shrooms get it
chris pratt’s mario voice is okay. it sounds kinda like mario’s voice in hotel mario, but with less personality
charles martinet’s cameo is as mario. the first time mario says something, it’s in martinet’s voice, then he clears his throat and has a more boring voice for the rest of the movie
princess peach girlboss moments
there’s a “mario is a bad brother” subplot. mario mistreats luigi consistently, and it’s not resolved by mario growing as a person it’s resolved by luigi doing something cool and “earning” mario’s respect
coincidentally mario DOES grow as a person, when he eats the super mushroom : )
in accordance with the Post-Frozen Law of Animated Villains, there will be a surprise bad guy reveal. there are several ways this could go:
bowser as a villain is played straight for the first act, then mario rescues peach and that’s the end of the Origin Story portion. afterwords, the REAL villain comes in, and the gang has to team up with bowser to stop them! and that real villain, of course, is
Foreman Spike, from Wrecking Crew
Donkey Kong
Yoshi (revenge for being thrown into pits)
Wario (wahahahaha)
Luigi (mario is a bad brother subplot final form)
Waluigi (featuring meta jokes about how waluigi hasn’t been in enough games)
Peach (girlboss moments)
ALTERNATIVELY, one of the above is the villain at first, then there’s a third-act twist that. bowser is the villain.
there will be one shot, somewhere, where the super crown powerup appears in the background along with a bunch of other items, and people on twitter will freak out about how this is a canon reference to bowsette

Best of 2023 Movies #3: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
In 2019 video game movies began their hot streak with Detective Pikachu.
Followed by Sonic and its sequel.
With another video game adaptation that will be mentioned later we now have to take a look at Nintendos Iconic Figurehead.
And what unexpected fun this ended up being and critics hated.
Brooklyn natives Mario and Luigi have started their own plumbing service, to the ire of their parents and relatives.
When opportunity knocks to get more notice, the duo would be sucked down a warp pipe and become separated.
Mario landing in the Mushroom Kingdom, land of the Toads and lead by Peach.
While Luigi would end up in the domain of Bowser, koopa shell icon and a master of unexpected talents and unrealistic crushes (which will also be explored later.)
Mario, Peach and the main Captain Toad set off to rescue Luigi all the while opening up as Peach Says “A Whole Universe”
One brings in Mario’s origin in the form of the Kongs, lead by Crankey and his son DK.
Going beyond what the first game based movie was, this kept things to the point where it was very simple in the end.
As Mario usually goes after Peach, switching this to Luigi elevated the stakes and kept things more contained.
Chris Pratt, was a mixed bag as Mario but the other 4 major players of Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan Michael Key as Toad and Anya Taylor Joy giving us a new side of Peach more than made up for it.
If anything, the Kongs were not needed, despite Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen giving it their best.
Though the same thing can be said about that Luma.
Still though first walkthrough and this amazingly works.
While unlike its predecessor actually sets up a sequel and expansion well.
A Galaxy worth of adventures and stunt casting for a certain mother of the stars awaits.
SUM 22: One of two video game peaks came from the brothers, the princess, the koopa, the toad and the troopers with this delight.

Thoughts on the Mario movie
THE PROS
--Stunning animation! I mean, Jesus Mohammad Christ, the lighting?! The facial expressions?! The textures?! The weight of things falling and hitting and cracking?! The translation of 2D side-scroller to 3D world?! J'adore!!
--Genuinely horrific intro to the Darklands. Like, I was actually terrified for Luigi, especially the last shot with the Shy Guys in the castle.
--The world designs! If there's anything Illumination excels at, it's funky little societies, and the Mushroom Kingdom is no exception.
--The Battle with Francis the Dog, not only for the fantastic facial expressions of Francis himself, but for showing off how Mario and Luigi interact when faced with a problem (Luigi holding up a mirror as a shield mirrors [ha] how he protects Mario at the end of the movie). Also, the placement of the opera music over the madness happening when the plumbing goes haywire was *chef's kiss*.
--Hair flippies <3
--"Peaches"
--The voice acting: Charlie Day strikes a very interesting balance between Luigi's game voice and a real person, which makes him feel familiar at the same time as adding depth. And of course, Jack Black sounds like he had a lot of fun as Bowser, and I got chills twice during his lines.
--Existential luma
--Mario and Luigi apparently dress the way they do as a way to brand the look for their new business, and I love that. They feel out-of-place in their world somehow and fit better into the Mushroom Kingdom (which may just be the fact that their designs were meant for that world, but ce la vie, that's how it felt).
--THE HUG. I did not want to see this movie at all until I started hearing people talk about the relationship between Mario and Luigi as actual brothers. I haven't played any of the games with story, so I don't know how the film's take compares, but I do have a little sibling whom I love dearly and would absolutely learn the physics-bending rules and fight the same battles as Mario does if it meant getting my sister back. Does it feel a little fanficky? Sure. But it works.
--Actually, the whole Mario family's dynamics work, and there were so many little details and interactions I caught just on the first watch that build so much character with only a few scenes of dialogue. Mario being athletic before the events of the movie, never knowing when to quit, being defensive about his career choices and how they affect Luigi, who would follow him anywhere; Luigi being the most supportive person, even singing Mario's praises in the face of a big scary monster, never losing hope even when things are looking dire; their parents being more concerned than outright disappointed in their choices, trying to be supportive but missing the mark.
--Speaking of Mario never knowing when to quit and Luigi being a supportive person, no one in this movie really learns anything... and that's okay! The feelings that everyone has about how things should be end up being what keeps them going until the world(s) agree with them. Peach, for example, cares tremendously about the Toads and will do anything to keep them safe, which she does!
--Bowser is actually terrifying! Sure, he has his silly moments, but the badassery absolutely outweighs them. I had no doubt that he would actually commit mass murder, especially toward the end of the movie when the anger from being turned-down really comes out.
--Peach running the obstacle course in heels and a full gown (I have done something similar in a full skirt and bodice, and it was fun to watch on screen).
--FUCKIN TEAMWORK, YA'LL
THE CONS
--How many times do they have to title-drop? After seven, I was really getting tired of it. Like, yes, we know it's the Super Mario Brothers, we are aware.
--Illumination has a brand of comedy, and it is not absent from the movie.
--I'm not too familiar with the lore of anything, much less Donkey Kong, but... he never struck me as the fratboy type?? Like, sure, the dynamic kind of works when he interacts with others, but it felt... off.
--The voice acting. I saw this one coming, honestly, and I think I blame the studios more than the actors (I can't help but have sympathy). Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong felt wrong to me. Same with Cranky Kong, as if something in the voice did not match the character somehow. I'm not sure how to describe it. There were times where the same issue arose with Peach, Mario, and the main Toad as well, like there's a disconnect.
--Lots of very bright colors in both Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom, which softens the blow of actually arriving in another world. I get that this is more of a children's movie, and children love bright colors, but do you know the feeling you got when first seeing Dorothy step out of the sepia-tone house into the technicolor Land of Oz? That feeling was missing here.
--Someone used a lot of the budget on copyrighted songs, and it gets distracting. ("Mr. Blue Sky" is already intrinsically linked with a complete other fandom in my mind, so its addition really threw me out of the story).
OVERALL
The Mario movie was good! I enjoyed it, even with its faults, and I would buy the DVD if only to admire the artistry that went into the animation and screenplay. There were still times I absolutely would have screamed "HELL YEAAAHHH!" had I not been in a public theater.
10/10 visuals
10/10 foley
6/10 voice acting
7/10 plot execution
8/10 characterization
Judgement: Would recommend, even if you don't know lore!

MY MAJOR PREDICTIONS FOR THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE (SPOILER FREE-ZONE HERE)
Hello everyone, today is the first week after the premiere of the Mario Bros movie that currently got everyone hooked on the brothers...now it’s time to give my predictions in order to see if I already got the plot right:
1. Mario and Luigi were abused by Foreman Spike, and after he threatened Luigi or Mario, they start their business and this is how Super Mario Bros plumbing is born!
2. Their business is not running well and try to go somewhere big to prove themselves and after finding the warp tunnel, the story begins proper!
3. While Mario is clearing the course and already surpassed Peach’s expectations, Luigi is trying to run away from Bowser’s minions within the dark lands controlled by none other than our villain Bowser! He gets captured and Bowser tortures him in order to find out who he is.
4. There is a whole prophecy relating to Mario and Bowser fears him because of this!
5. Mario reminds the Kongs of Jumpman, who once kidnapped the Elder DK and because of this, they want some revenge...DK also gets beaten by none other than Mario, who makes the platform explode and he falls down to the ground, thus the Kongs agree!
6. Bowser gets the news thanks to his spies and orders the lad Blue Spiny shell Koopa to intercept them, which he does. Also, the Spiny Blue Koopa is the most badass character in the movie and meneacing...I am terrified of this turtle, how he smiles....ugh, terror, sheer terror, BUT COOL AND BADASS AND PROND! I bet that he not only resisted Nastasia’s mind-control, but fought against Cursa’s forces until the bitter end, where she threatened to kill all of the brainwashed Bowser minions if he doesn’t surrender his free will. Being the champion he is, surrenders to Cursa and then dies to Bowser who gets mad at Cursa and swears eternal revenge...Ok I drifted up, anyway he is going to be big and speaking of him!
7. The whole Rainbow bridge attack is going to fail for the heroes. Mario gets blasted off by the Blue Koopa and lands somewhere beaten and demoralized after his first game over...DK might be knocked down as well... The Kongs withdrew their support and Peach is without soldiers...now she has to face Bowser on her own.
8. We get a flashback on Peach’s origins...either she was born within the Mushroom kingdom with Humans parents who died because of Bowser or was an adventuress who ended up in the kingdom and took it over in order to protect it. She believes that she has to do everything on her own and would risk her life defending the Mushroom Kingdom. She picks the Halberd and challenges Bowser to battle.
9. At the meantime, Mario gives up and doesn’t want to fight anymore, believing everything to be hopeless and that this is the end of everything, he will die as a failed hero who was just some unsuccessful plumber...that is until Luigi appears, who escaped Bowser’s cluthes either with the help of the Penguins or the Luma or even King Boo...anyway he encourages his brother to fight once more and Mario does so...they might find DK and these 3 fight together against Bowser’s minions who are about to take over the Mushroom Kingdom.
10. Peach nearly defeats Bowser in her fight against him, but he uses a Macguffin against her and she loses, ending up under his clutches just before he could held her captive and promises her that if she submits to his rule and becomes his queen, he willl spare the Mushroom Kingdom...we know how this is all wrong...but anyway, Mario and Luigi fight together against Bowser and with the help of DK and Peach, they defeat Bowser, he falls into Lava and thus Mario and Luigi start their new life as heroes within the Mushroom Kingdom, a happy end with a delicious Cake made by Peach!
11. Also as a side-note, Bowser is motivated by his desire to bring back the ancient rule of the Koopa, who once ruled over the entire world a Mustached Human ended their rule and this Human is the ancestor of Mario and Luigi...
12. Post-credits has Bowser Jr with the Koopalings plot their revenge against the Mario bros for killing their father and swear to defeat them!
How true will all of this be...I wonder as well. I will know the truth later and let’s a go!

Mario movie thoughts! Full of spoilers!
I want everyone to line up and lick my foresighting pussy. I was right about everything except for toad during training and dance party(thank god)
But okay, I'll analyze it in two ways, one as a mario fan the other as an average movie goer
As a mario fan:
10/10 WHAT A FILM! Seriously if you like Mario and his history enough this movie will be amazing. It's reference after reference + new stuff and it respects it's source material for like 90% of the time.
Mario and Luigi are actually brothers that care SO MUCH about each other, it's so cute. Their baby forms show up in a flashback and it shows how Mario always stood up to his bro. It's so adorable and "Mario is evil and doesn't like Luigi" has just been killed in the garbage, buried and had it's grave spit on.
Speaking of the bros, we see the Mario Family WHAT? AND THEY GAVE MARIO DADDY ISSUES? WACK. Like it's a stereotypical brooklyn-italian family, but nice to at least see their face. And it's so cool to me how Mario and Luigi are probably on their 20's, just beginning their careers and failing and be filled with self-doubt, it's nice...
Oh and Mario has a personality now, yeah he's very head strong, daring and brave, only being taken aback when he's in a real tight spot. And despite his chubby physique he's quite the athlete(wait we have seen this type of Mario in Luigi's mansion 3) it's really cool that it took 40 years for him to, for a large audience, develop a life of his own.
Next point: Peach
Yeah, girlboss, uh huh, an actual queen, yes... I actually really liked her in this movie, she is a capable leader that loves and appreciate her people. Her backstory, we see baby Peach, so cute and it actually reflects why she loves the Toads. Also yeah she's pretty strong and agile, but now thinking back I want to see some of her flaws in the (and it definetely IS going to happen) sequel.
Also her and Mario, so cute together, I want more of them...
Speaking of love... Bowser. Yeah he is menacing and a threat, if this wasn't a kids movie I think we would see more messed up things, there is only cartoonish violence which is okay I guess. However, despite being shown to be cruel and sorta of a mad king, he also shows a dorky side. Like "Why does Bowser want to kidnap and marry Princess Peach" It's because he likes her... What are you gonna do about it? He's charmed by her and I can't blame him..
And bowuigi... It didn't happen, yeah. Kinda mad because the fanart that would have been made if it had more than the scenes shown in the trailer would be insane. But also, I don't like it when corporations use gays ships for pink money(it's what would have happened). They did use bisexual light in his speedwagon-esque music number. And what a cool addition to Bowser lore, that he plays the piano.
Speaking of Luigi, he doesn't show up too much actually, he really gets imprisioned and stays imprisioned 2/3 of his screentime, waste of a character ngl, but next time we gotta see more of him. Maybe his lack of appearance makes sense to his shy demeanor.
KONGS. They were great! I really like how the movie made part their culture around kart racing, because as we all know, diddy kong racing for the nintendo ds is the greatest video game of all time. Donkey is actually a pretty cool character and he's really funny too. THEY MADE CRANKY HIS DAD BTW. AND HE ALSO HAS DADDY ISSUES, IT'S WHAT MAKES DONKEY AND MARIO BOND. When Mario Peach and Toad go to Kong Kingdom, they get greeted by a kong that (maybe it's because of the artstyle) looks a lot like DK jr... idk. ALSO DIDDY APPEARS THIS IS GREATES MOVIE OF ALL BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY ONE WITH DIDDY KONG.
Toad is also there, like it's a chef toad, but he doesn't have an interesting name like those chef toads from the first paper mario games. He's the comic relief, but everyone is funny in this movie so he's just here to be next to Peach. Speaking of Toads, Toadsworth is dead... yeah there is a group of advisors and they are just normal toads with different colors and a few clothing details. Which interesting because I could blame Illumination for this lack of creativity in character design, but I know by a fact that this was Nintendo's doing.
Kamek is cute also, the koopas and goombas and enemies designs were great. The art style of this movie was fantastic to me.
And with that I can conclude my view as a fan. Now to act slightly more mature.
If you're not a fan of Mario, this movie will be a 5/10.
It's pretty good™, and that could be seen as a positive but we all know a "good" movie isn't enough, specially in animation, specially in a blockbuster animation. Don't get me wrong, you can see that I fucking adored this movie. However, if you're going to watch it completely devoid of any facts about Mario and gang, it's another movie about believing in yourself, protecting those you love and standing up for what's right.
And I know Mario isn't known for it's complex stories and carefully thought out world building and lore, but you can find another movie just like this one. What I'm trying to say is there is potential in this galaxy they created for the movie, though it's not explored.
I watched it with a couple of friends and one them said that this movie is more for mario nerds that grew up with playing the games back when nintendo was accesible rather than current day kids that watch a lot of youtube and have other interests and understandably can't afford nintendo crap. And agree to disagree, I'm definetely proving her point with this extensive review about a property I played with when I was 8 y/o. However, there were plenty of kids in our session, and like I said this feels like a genereic kids movie, so this is a movie for children, no denial, but it also relies on older fans to really profit.
In matters of animation, it's pretty good, expected from two big names like Nintendo and Illumination. As I sais the art style is reely cool, I like how it adapted the Kotabe/Nakaue art style mixing it with the smooth illumination style, take that as you will.
And okay, Illumination kids movie, you know what that means, copyrighted 80's music, seriously, Mr. Blue Sky, Holding out for a Hero, Take on Me. My honest reaction to that:
At least they put the dk rap when dk is introduced.
Also there were a few problems in the story. This is REALLY FAST. Like they don't even have time to make a misunderstanding when Peach and Mario first meet. They're already telling the toads they'll try to convince Cranky to join their fight. Like slow down jeez...
And hey, How does peach know what a human is? She came to the mushroom kingdom when she was a baby. And how is New York after Bowser gets defeated? They just show the bros moved to Mushroom kingdom. Is there even a pipe anymore? And the pipes just take you to other worlds ig? We're working with little explanation, I see.
Also no Daisy explicitely, nor Rosalina, there was A Pauline second.
But yes, it's generic, but I couldn't ask for anything else. But they better step up their game if they really want to make any impact on Mario's history.

Now Watching: The Super Mario Bros. Movie!
Mario has been on a roll this year, anyone else thinking we should quit our day jobs and become plumbers? Between Universal Studios adding “Mario Land” and the movie debuting on 4/5 in theatres everywhere...don’t even get me started on the amount of games from the franchise that are selling hand over fist. Let’s talk movies!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
So, before I watched this movie-I have played the games for my whole life, my parents played the game before me. This game came out in 1985, which puts this on the radar of my parents growing up-and then on my radar in childhood. My nephew is avid gamer, who has done everything mario related. He has either played or watched youtube for gameplay footage, and even just went to Universal Studios. So, you have Mario on 3 generations. His current favorite game is Super Mario Maker 2.
This game, turned movie, can almost be too iconic to succeed. I meant what I typed, I know the phrase is “too big to fail”, but I mean what I type. One question I had before was: who was the target customer? Was it my parents who played the OG game? Was it me who played the current game with extended storylines? Or my nephew who has probably watched more people play it more than he has actually played it?
This is your spoiler alert. Here I will go into some things I loved and did not love about this movie.
There was so much movie in such a little time. While there are a lot of games in the franchise, from my knowledge of the mario universe-they covered the following game: Mario Kart, Super Mario Odssey, Luigi’s Mansion, Yoshi Island, and so many more. The movie is 1.5 hours long. Some references to the games were more subtly referenced, and others were like watching a video clip from the games.
The movie itself is well made, the actor list is not a bad mix. The story is not untrue to the base material. The mixture of real world and game world is a little odd, but kind of necessary. In game, there is no question of why you are there. In the movie they have to establish why humans are in the video game world. The movie needed to be a little bit longer to kind of establish the brothers. Yes you know the brothers, but when you are changing the story-you have to explain it.
While you are normally helping to rescue the princess, the tables are turned. I wonder if that would of been the case if we weren’t in a time of feminist trying to dominate the world. Music is all over the place, half the time it is video game classic tunes and the other half its oldies over the generation. There is even a beastie boys song in the movie!
There is a lot of movie, in too short amount of time. In my opinion, I don’t feel like Nintendo struck the “classic kid movie balance” in putting jokes for the adults but keeping the movie kid friendly. It was definitely more for the younger to youngest generation, the older generation is too busy adulting to keep up with the ever continuing story. For me, there are some things that are “classic mario” that I would of loved to see more. I did not see enough ghosts or yoshi’s. I know there is a lot of types of being in the universe and its hard to show them all in 1.5 hours, but if it was done differently-you could of slowed it down and maybe had a sequel.
While I do love this era of gaming turned cinema, not every game is successfully turned into a movie. I would say this game was middle of the road, while I have heard good things about D&D being turned into a film.
Did you know if you look up Mario games, there are 50+ games in the franchise? IMDb gives this a 7.5 out of 10, and a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes. Would I recommend this movie? It is not bad for older kids. Older people will not totally understand everything, but like anything that makes money these days-its about targeting kids and getting adults to pay for them. Have you seen this movie? What would you tell someone who hasn’t seen it? Inquiring Minds Want To Know.

Predictions for Terrible Mario Movie
I know this site is full of prophets, but this is just based on what I'm used to with CG animated movies starring celebrities nowadays.
1. There's going to be a scene where Luigi snaps at Mario for overshadowing him. It will lead to Mario being shocked and apologizing or the two brothers separating for drama until Toad or some other character gets them to reunite.
2. Peach is going to be #girlboss and #independantwoman. It will be incredibly performative and cringey.
3. Bowser will be the best part of the move.
4. Related to the last part, yet another boom of Bowser-themed naughty images will come after the movie's release.
5. There will be a "Your Princess is in another castle joke". It will be very wink wink and unfunny.
6. Mario will have get depressed at one point. I only say this because like every CG movie has the main character have to sulk around for a couple scenes after some kind of reveal.
7. Cranky Kong will in-fact be the original Donkey Kong from the arcade game and have a blood feud with Mario's father.
8. Speaking of, we will learn way too much about Mario and Luigi's past and there will be some stupid angst added. There's also a good chance Yoshi's Island is completely ignored.
9. There will be a dig at Sonic for no reason since the fucking Sega vs Nintendo shit hasn't been relevant in over ten years.
10. Mario will have a line referencing Go-karting, partying, and golfing. It will be shallow references just there to make people "hey he referenced a fucking game he was in"
11. It will do very well at the box office and prove once again that just having big names sells, causing me to get sad.

Mario Mario & Luigi Mario || Super Mario Bros.
The beginning of any quest has its starting pains. In the early 90’s, Hollywood set out to begin getting a cut of that sweet video game money. At the time, video games were mostly considered toys, and they were advertised as such. As the medium grew more adult, so did its films. Still, they had to begin somewhere, and why not with the biggest gaming property on the planet past and present: Super Mario Bros. This provided an unknowingly impossible challenge for creatives, one that is still a topic of intense discussion to this day. How does one balance the adaptation of a property from a completely different format into film? At the time, other films that looked similar to what Super Mario Bros would become had succeeded despite the challenges of adapting comics for film. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the first re-imagination of Batman since the 60’s went on to invigorate their respective properties. Today, comic book movie adaptations are the tent pole of every major movie studio. In the case of Super Mario Bros, despite its critical failure at the time, I honestly feel like the creatives succeeded. The ire this film would glean over time from both fans and the people behind the camera fuel its bad reception to this day. In my opinion, it is actually a success story in the world of video game adaptations, and a great place to start if you plan on watching every Hollywood attempt. I promise you this: it could be so much worse. And for later attempts, it was! But, does Super Mario Bros thwomp?
In my initial argument, I raised that these films should be broken down into categories including: Originality, Preservation, Construction, Delivery, and Fanservice. Originality and Preservation can be at complete odds with one another. In the case of Super Mario Bros, it turns out to be a good combination of both. They offset each other just enough to find a balance between the reality of our world and the fantasy of the mushroom kingdom. Sit back in your chair and imagine the real world of 1993, what films looked like back then, the landscape of video game culture. I think the creators had this very much in mind when they penned this movie. The very first thing that happens in the Super Mario Bros movie is the NES theme song with all the depth a stereo sound system can provide. It really sets your little gamer heart aflutter. It conjures up images of the brightly colored games. Using narration, they make promises of dinosaurs, meteors, and other dimensions. If you don’t think too hard, it kind of sounds like a version of Super Mario Bros that was advertised via the game manuals and cartoon show. If you are familiar with either, a pair of New York plumbers essentially get sucked down a drain pipe. This process is a little more drawn out in the film, but It turns out more or less exactly as good as could have been expected in 1993. In fact, the film really isn’t above sucking them down a drain pipe, they do crazier things, but I suspect that they wanted the plumbers to have a more direct conflict that would lead them to try and save princess Daisy.
The plot of the film is par for the course in a children's film and a direct consequence of the game itself, especially if you consider the 3rd entry. A good king and an evil military general, betrayals and coups, princesses sent to live in another realm only to return home with a pair of knights to dethrone the evil king. A tale as old as time, one that continues to be retold because it resonates with us. The filmmakers were really focused on this being a performance of realism meets fantasy This would come to be the major struggle that other video game movies would continue to have problems balancing. They took concepts from the game and gave them an original spin and most within the framework of the original work. Their creative license is often challenged for these choices, but in the context of making a live action Super Mario Bros movie in 1993, those challengers should check themselves. The real question you should ask yourself is, in this context, what would you have done differently? And would it really have been better? I struggled to find a way to truly make the concepts of this movie any MORE appealing, but it was surprisingly easy to make it worse. In one way, this film was a by the numbers kids adventure story, but it's being held to task mostly for failing to be a good adaptation of the game, a bar which didn’t exist when they made it, but one they set and cleared simply by attempting to do so much. All the Mario concepts are easily recognizable, which should be applauded, even in the face of them being a little wacky.
Despite its failings in authenticity, it actually packs quite a lot of fanservice into almost every frame. If you pay attention once they enter Bowser’s domain, the walls are littered with little ads and jokes all based on Mario properties. This is all in an effort to please fans, but the film does tend to leave these little things in the background, the camera more focused on the characters and plot, so blink and you miss them. If anything, this duty to fanservice seems somewhat creatively arresting. Had this film not been an adaptation of another work, they may have opted to skip a few things, like how Mario and Luigi employ the use of mushrooms. In the game, these would make the bros bigger, but this would have been a bit at odds with the backdrop of the grimmy New York City analogy they chose, not to mention technically difficult. People have been squashing miniatures for years, but I just don’t see this being a good use of the film’s time given every other decision. The film's overwhelming attempt to create entirely new flesh on the skeleton of an animated game is really only hampered by the audience's willingness to enjoy it for what it is, by questioning every creative decision. A lot of effort was taken to make the world feel cohesive, especially in its attempt to be parallel to existing New York City. They even take time on some more clever jokes that go somewhat unspoken. Everything in Bowser City runs on electricity, including the cars. The idea here is that fossil fuels do not exist because the dinosaurs of this world haven’t ever fossilized. Or maybe the dinosaurs knew it was bad for their planet? The film is constructed and delivered in such a way as to not take itself too seriously, but to appear parallel to something familiar to our own world in conjunction with the Super Mario world.
After having sat through the film with an earnest critical eye, I am not going to tell you the film is greater than the sum of its parts or that it's fantastic because it set out on an uncharted path. Instead, what I will attest to is that it was truly competent. It made every attempt to give you what you wanted and also took a few of their own twists on the formula. Bullet Bills turned into fuel for jumping, Bomb-oms wear Reeboks, shoes facilitate their ability to jump but also satisfy the boot you wear in Super Mario Bros 3. They even use the lightgun from the NES to navigate screens much like a mouse and the SNES super gun as a weapon! All this and still they found a way to make it all fit within the italian brothers from Brooklyn framing. Unfortunately, it would seem no one really learned anything from the success or the failures of this film. If the 90’s game films are any indication, the only thing they learned is that the box office is fickle and to double down on fan service even when it doesn't make sense, and in some cases, abandon everything about the game entirely and simply slap the name on a completely original film. And yet, despite all the bad press and internal struggles the Super Mario Bros production had, they came out the other end with an inoffensive, enjoyable film that both kids and adults can enjoy. Especially if they forgive the film any perceived sins, a gift that all film adaptations deserve, and just try to recognize what they really accomplished. Bringing to life a world that only existed in your Nintendo. It may not have been pretty, but damn if it wasn’t entertaining.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Which fighters are more anime?
You know, people often accuse certain fighters of being “too anime“. But does being Japanese-styled simply make a character “anime“, even if they’re not in any anime material? “Anime“ itself refers to the grand majority of Japanese cartoons, after all - it’s primarily in the animation. You wouldn’t call manga alone “anime“ because it’s not animated - it’s printed stills. In fact, why the H don’t people use the term “manga“ for these Japanese-styles?
Well, I say that’s not good enough. Plenty of “anime“-looking characters don’t even get their own anime stuff. So here’s what I’m gonna do. I’ll sort the fighters based on what anime material they’ve appeared in.
Higher-up tiers will take priority over lower tiers, so some fighters in the Anime (Series) tier may also be in anime movies, or anime-style commercials. I’ll give some mention to those if I can.
-= ANIME (SERIES) =-
- This tier is for series of anime episodes (at least 3) - each episode would of course need to be fairly long, like 15+ minutes.
- Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros.: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Koopalings
- Kirby: Right Back At Ya!: Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede
- Pokémon (anime): Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pichu, Mewtwo, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Lucario, Greninja, Incineroar
- Pokémon Origins: Pokémon Trainer (plus Charizard, Mewtwo, and others)
- F-Zero: GP Legend: Captain Falcon
- Sonic X: Sonic
-= ANIME (MOVIES) =-
- Next tier down is for fighters that appeared in anime-style movies or OVAs. I’ll mention some movies that above characters appeared in, of course.
- Super Mario Bros. The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach: Piranha Plant (also Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser)
- Fire Emblem (OVA): Marth
- Animal Crossing: The Movie: Villager (Girl)
- Mega Man: Upon A Star: Mega Man
- Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie: Ryu, Ken
- Last Order: Final Fantasy VII: Cloud
- Bayonetta: Bloody Fate: Bayonetta
- Dragon Quest Biography: Emblem of Roto: Hero (Arusu)
- Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture: Terry
- (also) many Pokémon movies: Pikachu, Pichu, Mewtwo, Squirtle, Charizard, Lucario, Greninja, Incineroar
- (also) Sonic The Hedgehog (OVA): Sonic
-= ANIME (PROMOTIONAL) =-
- This is for fighters in promotional material that was too short to fit the requirements for Series and Movie. Some series mentioned didn’t have long enough episodes, for example.
- Super Smash Bros. For: Goddess of Light: Link, Pit, Dark Pit, Palutena
- Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins: Fox, Falco
- Palutena’s Revolting Dinner: Pit, Palutena
- Medusa’s Revenge: Pit, Palutena
- (also) Super Mario Traffic Safety: Mario, Luigi
- (also) Super Mario’s Fire Brigade: Mario, Luigi
- ...There’s also a LOT of Japanese commercials for Mario games - and other Mario products - but I’m not sure I have the fortitude to hunt them all down...Still, I think in light of those, I should’ve moved Donkey Kong and Yoshi (who were in the Mario Kart 64 commercial), as well as Wario and Zelda (Famicom commercial feat. Wario’s Woods and Legend of Zelda) up to this tier.
- I was REALLY hesitant in putting Link here, since the justification I had at the time was for a Smash Bros. newcomer trailer. However, since he appeared in the aforementioned Famicom commercial, he’s probably safe. But then Dark Pit wouldn’t have any anime appearances if I went by that technicality...Though since I used it, maybe Byleth should be here, too?
-= ANIME (GAME CUTSCENES) =-
- This is for fighters who were in games with anime-style cutscenes and whatnot.
- Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi’s Adventure Land: Yoshi
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses: Byleth
- Wario Land: Shake It: Wario
- (also) Pokémon Channel: Pichu, Squirtle (in Pichu Brothers)
- (also) Sonic Riders: Sonic
- (also) Street Fighter 4 (all versions): Ryu, Ken
- (also) Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes: Ryu
- (also) Persona 5: Joker
- ...Actually, Chrom was technically in anime-style game cutscenes in Tokyo Mirage Sessions # FE. Not the same as the general Chrom, but...
-= NOT ANIME =-
- ...And now all the fighters that WEREN’T in any kind of anime. If I counted manga, then this would be pretty empty, but we’re focusing on anime here. So! Let’s see which fighters are NOT anime!
- Daisy, Dr. Mario, Rosalina & Luma (forgot their avatar), Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, King K. Rool, Sheik, Ganondorf, Young Link, Toon Link, Samus, Dark Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Ridley, Wolf, Ness, Lucas, Ice Climbers, Lucina, Roy, Robin, Corrin, Mr. Game & Watch, Snake, Olimar, Alph, R.O.B., Isabelle, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, Mii Fighters, PAC-MAN, Shulk, Duck Hunt, Inkling, Simon, Richter, Hero (Eleven, Solo, Eight), Banjo & Kazooie
- Ones that really are anime in hindsight: Donkey Kong, Zelda, Chrom
- Castlevania does have an animated series, but it’s being done by Americans. While the style is anime-inspired, it’s not officially Japanese-drawn or -animated (much like Avatar: The Last Airbender) ...so it’s not anime. Besides, I don’t think Simon or Richter have appeared in it. It’s mainly focused on Trevor’s time.
- The pseudo-3D anime style didn’t appear in Fire Emblem cutscenes until Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, which was after the release of Fates. This trend would, however, continue in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Ahem...so there you have it! Iggy is more anime than Shulk. Wario is more anime than Lucina. And Piranha Plant is more anime than three of the playable Heroes!
...But if you REALLY don’t want any more “anime” in Smash, then you better kiss Dante, Viewtiful Joe, KOS-MOS, Lloyd Irving, and Heihachi (and probably others) goodbye.

If you had a parrot, what would be the first word you would teach it?
Ha, my mom would probably be the one to teach it its first word cause she would think it was funny to hear it repeat a cuss word or something. lol.
What food have you eaten the most lately?
Wing Stop boneless garlic parm wings, pizza from my favorite local pizza place, and ramen.
Where you ever a Pokemon fan?
I was for a short time as a kid. I liked collecting the cards, especially. My dad worked in the mall at that time and he often would stop by the toy store to grab me a pack.
How would you describe the taste of water?
It’s so weird cause it’s typically described as not having a taste, but it does. I just don’t know how to describe it. If you know, you know.
Do you think books are going out of fashion?
No, but I do feel like people aren’t reading them as often now. “Them” as in an actual, physical book.
One thing you miss about being a kid :
A lot of things. I had obstacles and struggles then health wise, but I kid you not when I say those things aren’t what stands out when I look back on my childhood. I miss just being able to just watch cartoons and play Barbies all day, or play house and school with my cousins. I miss just having fun and looking forward to each day. I hadn’t been knocked down and drained by life, yet.
What is the best product made from milk?
Cheese.
How would you feel if your husband didn’t want to wear a wedding ring?
I don’t plan on getting married. I can’t even imagine ever being in the situation where it was a possibility, honestly. IF I ever did; though, I could see myself wanting to wear my ring and I’d want my husband to wear his, too.
Do you say Autumn or Fall?
I say both. Autumn sounds a lot nicer.
What is your biggest “what if”?
Ugh, there’s way too many of those. I can do it all day and they drive me insane.
What is the worst movie you have ever seen?
This reminds me of the ratings the new Grudge has received. The scores are lowwwww. Like, it’s apparently really, really bad. I actually wanted to see it, but now I’m like ehhh I’ll wait until I can rent it.
Have you ever spelled your own name wrong?
Probably when I was really little.
What do you want your wedding song to be?
I told you already, I don’t plan on getting married. It’s not something I envision for myself. It’s not something I even think about.
What is your favorite fairytale?
Hmm.
True/False : If it’s meant to be, it will be.
I think so.
What electronic of yours dies the quickest?
The Nintendo Switch has the worst battery life.
Do you think we learn some useless things in school?
Yeah.
Do you feel like your life would be better without a certain person in it?
No. The problem is me.
Who has influenced your music taste the most?
I got some from both my parents, as well as my maternal grandparents.
What did you get your mom for Mother’s Day?
We’re only in January.
You go to the restroom and you see a huge spider, what do you do?
Freak out and get the hell out outta there. haha. I’d get my brother or whoever was home to go kill it.
what’s something you want but will probably never get?
My depressing ass can come up with a lot of things.
Do you like reading scary books?
Yes.
Is there a game your addicted to you?
Currently, Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Do you get embarrassed when your stomach growls in class?
I was always so nervous about that happening, honestly. Taking tests or silent reading time was the worst time for me cause I’d be thinking about that. As if my anxiety over taking the exam wasn’t enough.
Do crying people make you uncomfortable?
Well for one, seeing other people sad and crying makes me sad and want to cry. But also, I feel very awkward around someone who’s crying. I don’t know what to do or say. I just sit there awkwardly, lol.
Would you ever marry someone your parents didn’t approve of?
Enough with the marriage questions. Anyway, I wouldn’t want to be in a relationship with someone my parents didn’t like. That would be very difficult for me. I want whoever I date to have a good relationship with my family and vice versa. That’s important to me. I’m very close with my family and spend a lot of time with them, sooo. My parents aren’t going to just not like someone for no reason, though. They’re really chill and my friends have always liked them. So, if they didn’t approve for some reason, they’d have a legit reason.

B-Squared’s Top 10 Games of 2019!
2019 was a year full to the brim of GREAT games, and as is the custom at the end of the year, people love to rank their favorites, so…I’d like to do the same! Of course my own tastes might be different from yours so if you don’t see a thing on here that you liked, chances are I didn’t like it…or more likely, there’s just too many great games out this year, and I couldn’t get to everything. I’d like to stress to that the rankings don’t really matter all that much, especially the farther down we go. Everything on here is an easy recommendation. Without any further ado…let’s take a look at my Top 10 Games of 2019~
#10 - River City Girls
I love action games, but 2D beat-em-ups never really clicked for me. They were largely before my time and I was thinking that it’d be impossible to get me into one in the current era of gaming. And then I saw Marian’s redesign for River City Girls and bought the game. What can I say? Abs are a great sales pitch. But seriously, getting Wayforward on the helm of a beloved classic franchise is already a great way to pique my interest, and while there’s SOME aspects of this game that I don’t quite gel with, it’s a fun, colorful romp through a ridiculous universe that I’d LOVE to see more of down the line. Featuring a role-reversal, with the girlfriends saving the boyfriends this time, River City Girls has gorgeous pixel art, an AMAZING pop-synth soundtrack that’s worth the price alone, and it’s a game that clearly had fun with the concept and that fun rubs off on you. From the stylish animated boss intros, to the co-op fun that can be had with a friend, everything in this game is brimming with charm. Basic NPCs have great designs in their own right, being able to recruit enemies as assists is a neat idea, and it all adds up to a fun, bite-sized adventure with a bit of depth under the hood if you’re willing to give it a look. Can the character designers get a raise for this game, please? And let Megan McDuffie just do all the songs from now on. ALL OF THEM.
#9 - Astral Chain
Most people assumed if we were going to get a Switch exclusive game by Platinum this year, it’d be Bayonetta 3 but instead Nintendo surprised us with Astral Chain, the anime cop action game we didn’t know we wanted. The game boasts great visuals and is probably the most content-rich Platinum game ever made for starters, but for me the true draw is in the combat. Playing as your police officer in tandem with an alien creature known as a Legion, this tag-team action game is unlike pretty much anything else on the market. While the game starts off very simplistic, the Legion itself moving and attacking with no input from the player, over time more and more options unlock and things get considerably more complicated. By game’s end, you’re drowning in options, and once things clicked, combat was always a treat. With plenty of enemies to practice with, Legions to master and a gigantic post-game filled with challenging encounters, I had more fun with the combat in this game than I did with a lot of other games this year. That said, I do feel that Astral Chain could have benefitted from trimming some fat or rethinking its overall structure. For being a new IP with some bold ideas, I’m willing to accept these as kinks that can hopefully be ironed out in a sequel. Oh, and add Lappy to Smash already. You know you want to, Sakurai.
#8 - BABA IS YOU
Puzzle games are hard sells for me, since I don’t like the frustration that often comes from being stuck. You feel dumb, you get embarrassed and turn the game off in shame, or at least that’s my experience. But then sometimes you get a game so clever, so…weird, that you can’t help but be sucked into it. BABA IS YOU is a block-pushing puzzle game, with the twist being that the “rules” of a particular stage are often physically present in levels and are in fact blocks that can be pushed and manipulated by the player. ROCK is PUSH, WALL is STOP, FLAG is WIN and BABA is YOU. But what if you can’t touch the flag because the wall is in the way? Well, make it so WALL is PUSH to move it aside, or maybe make it so that BABA is WIN and you become the win condition itself. As the game goes on, more modifiers and rules are slowly introduced and absorbed into your own internal logic of the game, logic that increasingly has to be broken and remade to suit your needs. It’s a very empowering experience when the solution clicks and the results can often be hilarious and surprising. This game also GOES PLACES the further you go in, and I’d rather not ruin that surprise for anyone who might be looking into the game. Definitely one of the most innovated titles I’ve played in a LONG time. BABA is GOOD.
#7 - Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid
OK, so…hear me out. Power Rangers was a franchise I was obsessed with as a kid, and while I don’t follow it anymore, there’s still some love for it flowing in my veins. So when a small, no-name studio puts out a Power Ranger fighting game that takes the simplified controls of Smash Bros. and the tag-team craziness of Marvel vs. Capcom and slaps it all together for a cool twenty bucks or so? Well you got yourself a purchase and it ended up being WAY more fun than I expected. Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is far from the best looking fighter on the market, it’s single-player content is lacking, and it’s roster, while interesting, isn’t as big as a lot of the competition, but damn if it isn’t fun to play. With characters taken from across the franchise’s long history, from the live-action movie reboot to the comic books, each choice has been inspired and resulted in an incredibly varied cast. With no crazy inputs for special moves, combined with a tagging system that lets you cycle through your three-Ranger team quickly, the game is the best kind of chaotic fun, but true masters can command that chaos and channel it into cool combos that make you want to say “Morphinominal!” Considering it’s a budget title, it’s also received a fair amount of updates throughout the year to pad out the roster with both free and paid DLC fighters, a full story mode and improvements to the netcode and overall presentation., so if you passed on it at launch, it’s much improved now. It’s not gonna be a fighting game on everyone’s radar, but I’d rather support it than the grind-heavy slog Mortal Kombat has become…Now just hurry up and add that monster that baked the Rangers into a pizza!
#6 - New Super Lucky’s Tale
If your name isn’t Mario or Sonic, 3D platformers are effectively dead. That said, there’s been a few up-and-comers in recent years that are trying to revive the genre. Hat Kid from A Hat in Time, the duo of Yooka-Laylee, and now Lucky from the folks at Playful Studios. The cute fox has quite the history, starting from the Oculus Rift title, Lucky’s Tale, to a full-fledged platformer on the Xbox One X, Super Lucky’s Tale and now the enhanced port/reimagining New Super Lucky’s Tale on Switch. Halfway between a full-blown sequel, and enhanced edition, the game takes assets from the Xbox original game, tweaking and refining everything from visuals to controls to level layouts. The result is a game that is incredibly well-polished. It looks great, Lucky is a treat to control as he moves from jumping, burrowing and sliding around fluidly, and the variety on display keeps things interesting. We’ve got full 3D levels, 2D levels, auto-runners, and even some marble maze levels and puzzles thrown in for good measure. It’s not a hard game, but it IS incredibly fun, and well made. We don’t get many 3D platformers these days, so cherish what little comes of the genre. I hope Playful and Nintendo continue to collaborate, as they really seem more at home here. Just…maybe don’t add more words to the title of the next game, guys.
#5 - Katana Zero
There’s no nice way to say it: there’s too many pixel-based, side-scrolling indie games out there, so the ones that DO stand out deserve to be celebrated. Katana Zero has a real ‘80s flair for starters, using bright neon, TV and VCR visual effects, and a synth soundtrack to give it some real style. When a game kicks off with you slowing down time and reflecting a bullet back at an enemy with your katana, you make a good first impression! Add in the trial-and-error that is planning the perfect route through a stage, the satisfying slicing and dicing of enemies, the unique, challenging boss encounters, and you have a game that was on my radar for a while, before I finally got into it at the end of the year. Its storyline is pretty interesting too, with some slight variances in how events unfold depending on your words and actions, though it ending on a bit of a cliffhanger is a bummer. That said, when a game leaves you wanting more, there’s worse problems to have. At the very least, there’s some DLC hinted at that might be interesting, as well as the implications that this is the merely the first in a trilogy, and at this point I’m game for whatever developer Askiisoft has in store.
#4 - Luigi’s Mansion 3
The GameCube was an odd era for Nintendo, as they attempted to innovate and try new ideas rather than rely purely on their old standbys. Case-in-point, rather than launch the console with a new Mario platformer, his second-banana brother Luigi got his first starring role in what would become the Luigi’s Mansion series. While not making QUITE as big of a splash as maybe Nintendo hoped, it’s garnered a decent fanbase, and when a sequel was announced for 3DS, people ate it up. Considering the gap between the first and second games, I think many people were surprised at the relatively quick turn-around for the third installment. I was also surprised at the overall quality and how much I enjoyed digging into it. For starters, Luigi’s Mansion 3 is easily one of the better-looking Switch titles, boasting some great lighting and particle effects, with some fun physics implemented for just about everything in the massive mansion. Luigi and company are animated with a lot of expressiveness that never gets old, and the music sets the tone perfectly too. From a gameplay standpoint, the toolset Luigi gains gives him ample options to poke at every nook and cranny, with the slimy doppelganger Gooigi being the clear stand-out. Some of the floors of the Last Resort hotel that Luigi must ascend are particularly massive and intricate too, some floors feeling like Legend of Zelda-style dungeons. While not a particularly challenging game, it’s still really satisfying to poke and prod at everything in sight, sucking in all the coins, gold bars and stacks of paper bills you can handle, not to mention slamming the ghosts around like the Hulk does to Loki. There’s also multiplayer! That I…haven’t really touched but…hey! More bang for your buck, surely!
#3 – Dragon Quest XI S
I don’t consider myself a huge fan of JRPGs. Or at least that’s what I thought before I tried out the Dragon Quest XI demo on Switch. I ended up falling for the game hard and bought the full release, carrying my demo data over and not stopping until I hit credits. Despite having never touched a Dragon Quest game before, outside of an hour or so of VIII, I was overcome with this feeling of nostalgia when it came to this game. That’s because Dragon Quest is THE quintessential JRPG game, the originator of all that we take for granted today. It was nice to feel right at home with a simple, effective combat system, rather than having to watch games re-invent the wheel in an attempt to stand out from the pack (sorry Xenoblade), and the story itself, while predictable and a little basic at times, was told well and told earnestly. It really nailed the feeling of going on a grand adventure, with enough twists on the formula to keep things interesting. The turn-based combat was elementary, but always presented me with fair challenges and lots of ways to solve the encounters laid before me, with enough quality-of-life features added in to minimize grind and make things more convenient. The Switch version of Dragon Quest XI featured a bunch of new content on top of a game that had more than enough going for it, and it’s clear a lot of work was done to make this port as faithful as could be, and it stands out not just as a great port on a system known for some shoddy ones, but as a title that’s brimming with as much polish and quality to rival first-party Switch titles. Don’t ban Hero in Smash and don’t miss out on this game if you haven’t taken the plunge already!
#2 – Devil May Cry 5
The Devil May Cry franchise has had its share of ups and downs over the years. For every game that’s considered a success, you have another game that doesn’t quite measure up. For years many thought the franchise was dead in the water after the attempted reboot, DMC: Devil May Cry failed to grow its audience, but when Microsoft’s E3 2018 show revealed to us a new installment, fans were ecstatic. Devil May Cry 5 boasts crisp visuals, deep combat and trims the fat, removing the wonky platforming and puzzles of earlier games to create a high-octane action experience that ultimately exceeded fan expectations. Its storyline firmly plants Devil May Cry 4’s Nero as a main character in his own right, wraps up the story of the Sparda brothers neatly, and if this ended up being the last title in the series, I think it’s that rare ending that ends up being totally satisfying. Combat is the real draw here though, the game giving players three distinct characters to learn and master. Nero’s robotic Devil Breaker arms allow him a decent amount of variety, while having a balanced, beginner-friendly combat style for new players. Dante remains the king of variety, having more weapons than ever before combined with his signature style switching, though the game is actually designed with all these options in mind so he doesn’t end up breaking the game like he did in 4. Newcomer V ends up being a breath of fresh air, controlling up to three demonic summons at once, forcing players to really think more strategically. The music is incredible too; Nero’s own theme, Devil Trigger, has been stuck in my head since last year and I don’t see it leaving any time soon. All things considered, Devil May Cry 5 might be the best game in the franchise, and a worthy contender for game of the year personally. Now if only we had a special edition with Vergil and the ladies playable…
#1 - Fire Emblem: Three Houses
I got into the Fire Emblem series with Awakening and really liked it a lot, however Fates, the next installment, left a bad taste in my mouth. I couldn’t really get into Echoes, itself a remake of the second game in the series, and I began to wonder if this franchise was really for me. I was willing to give Three Houses a shot, but I was not prepared for the game to blow past all my expectations. Fire Emblem: Three Houses isn’t just a good game, it’s a game that’s redeemed a franchise that’s stumbled a bit in recent years, and it likely cements Fire Emblem as a core Nintendo franchise for years to come. It has class, depth and real heart...with only minor creepy or pervy elements! Making a grand return to home consoles after more than a decade on handhelds, it goes big and it ultimately paid off, on track to become the best-selling entry in the series. The school setting might seem weird at first, and I wondered how well I’d adjust to it, but being able to instruct your units and influence their growth in battle was worth the learning curve. Things are introduced slowly enough that the flow of the game becomes relatively easy to manage, if a bit time-consuming overall. With four distinct storylines you can explore, TONS of character interactions and some interesting tweaks to the strategic gameplay the series is known for, I’m confident in saying that Three Houses is well-worth a purchase for newcomers to the franchise. Divine Pulse is a great quality-of-life addition that lets you undo mistakes, rather than force you to start over from scratch, and overall the UI and layout of the game gives you enough information to make informed decisions without overwhelming you. Makes me wonder how we survived before the games showed us who enemies would target on their turns before now. Admittedly, some aspects of the progression have some issues, especially at endgame, and visually the game really is not up to par most of the time, but these end up being tiny blemishes in the long run for me. They certainly weren’t bad enough to prevent me from starting a new path the instant I finished my first route. If I have one request…just make Claude a gay option. Give the people what they want, Nintendo!
Honorable Mentions
I’d like to add on some honorable mentions here before we close things out, though most of these are things I didn’t even get a chance to play, but they certainly might have made this list. For one, Resident Evil 2 Remake seems like a high-quality reinterpretation of the survival-horror classic, but I can’t do horror so I’ll likely pass it up. It’s also for that reason that I might not get to Control but I might try jumping out of my comfort zone for that one. The confusion surrounding both The Other Worlds AND The Outer Wilds is funny, but they’re both space-based games I’d be keen on getting to at some point down the line; the former is a great Western RPG by the folks who made the GOOD Fallout games, while the latter is an interesting space-faring puzzler with some interesting mechanics I’d rather not spoil for those not more in-the-know. Indie titles Sayonara Wild Hearts and GRIS definitely caught my attention with their great visuals, and in the case of the former, its soundtrack, even if the gameplay wasn’t quite there for me, and the weird fighting-game-but-kinda-RPG that is Indivisible demands my attention sooner or later. Bloodstained is the Castlevania follow-up I keep forgetting is out, and I hear great things about Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. The team behind the Yakuza series recently made a spin-off of sorts, Judgment that hit the West this year and while I like the Yakuza series for its quirky tone and fun combat, there’s still six other games I’d have to sift through, so going with Judgment, which is set to possibly begin a new franchise, seems like a good alternative. And how could I forget the likes of Shovel Knight as we finally receive the last expansion that’s been years in the making? I haven’t touched the King of Cards expansion yet, but I have the upmost faith in anything Yacht Club makes, so that’s surely a game of the year contender. 2019 was crazy good! Glad to close the year out with so much quality, and tons of great stuff to add to the ever-growing backlog.
Hope you had some good gaming memories made this year!

Steve sat in a chair with a book in front of him. His eyes were not on the papers, though. His eyes were across the lounge area where y/n was sitting on a barstool pulled up to the counter, reading a magazine.
"Man, you're starin' at her, again." Sam said, clapping his hand on Steve's well-muscled shoulder.
Steve looked down at the book he was supposed to be reading, but he couldn't focus on the words, looking at y/n out of the corner of his eyes. He couldn't help it that his eyes always seemed to linger on her. Her face was magnetic. Her smile, addictive. He, honestly, couldn't fathom what was going through Bucky's mind when he left her lying alone in his bed, probably naked and-
Steve closed his eyes and shook his head. He didn't need to think of her like that. That's his best friend's best girl.
"This is gonna be like Sharon, isn't it?" Sam brought attention to himself again as he sat in the chair across the coffee table from Steve. "You're not going to make your move until way late in the game when you know you ain't gonna see her again for a long-ass time."
"Sam." Steve quietly chastised as he closed his book.
"What'd Sharon say when you finally kissed her? 'Overdue'? And then you never saw her again."
He sat forward and lowered his voice, eyes flicking to y/n and Wanda. "She's Bucky's girl, Sam."
"Pretty sure she's not, Steve. Barnes left her. She's been raising his kid with her brother because he was too much of a bitch to Dad up." Sam leaned forward, too. "Look, I don't hide how I feel about him. He's an unstable, dangerous dickhead and he ruined my damn car, but that's not why I'm sayin' this. I'm sayin' it because your boy Barnes had a month with her and ran off after three weeks because he didn't want to deal with 'Goodbye', didn't step up when she tried to tell him about that kid, but you did. Man, you treat that boy like he's yours and you want to treat her like she's yours, too. I can see it in your eyes."
Steve sighed and shook his head. "She's still got a thing for him. When she talks about him..."
"Man, when you talk about him, it sounds like you've got a thing for him." Sam interrupted. "That woman is perfect for you and you know it. Do I gotta get Wanda to dig into your heads, pull out your desires so that you can see-"
"I don't need Wanda to show me what I desire." Steve sat back and let his eyes fall on her again. She was excitedly pointing to something in a magazine. Her smile was radiant. "But, what I want isn't what's important."
"What about what she deserves? An upstanding, righteous, good man who wants to take care of her and her son. A damn American hero. Not in 1945. Now. She deserves a man like you. She deserves you."
"But she loves Bucky."
"I don't think she does. I think she was infatuated, that she had a hero complex for him because he saved her life, but you don't fall in love over three weeks and a couple black and white movies. You fall in love over life. Real love takes time, effort, and overcoming obstacles instead of running away from them. Cap, you are all about time, effort and overcoming obstacles. Your biggest obstacle here..." Sam stood, forcing Steve to look up at him. "...is yourself."
Steve opened his book again and tried to read, but he couldn't. Instead, the argument started up in head again. He'd had this argument with himself a dozen times since she walked up to him and recited her name, just with slightly more emotional attachment to call on as the time went by.
One side of the argument said everything he'd just heard from Sam: Bucky left, didn't answer her, he was happy that she was going back to America and didn't even stay until the day she got on her plane. Bucky didn't want to settle down in the first place.
The other side of the argument was... falling apart the longer he spent in her presence: Bucky was his best friend. Bucky always had his back, even when he didn't want him to. Bucky fell off a mountain and was tortured and became the Winter Soldier because of him. It would be a low thing to come in while Bucky's in cryo and take his girl, the one he'd spoken so highly of. Bucky was most important, no matter how he feels about her, no matter how he feels about George. Heck, he could help take care of George without being with y/n, right? And that would be honoring Bucky, to take care of his son, wouldn't it?
Of course, it wasn't just about George and he couldn't lie to himself about that.
*********
You looked across the room at Steve, reading his book. "Someday, he's going to look up and see you staring at him." Wanda said, slipping onto the stool next to you.
You looked down, embarrassed. "No, I've got a plan for that. I just look away really fast."
"Why are you embarrassed that you're attracted to Steve?"
You could feel your face turn red. "I'd thank you to stay out of my head, Wanda." You said, flipping your Game Informer open to a review of the newest Nintendo handheld.
"I don't need to be in your head, Y/n. I have eyes." She sucked her bottom lip between her teeth and chewed on it for a moment, staring at you. "Is it because of Sergeant Barnes?"
"He's Bucky's best friend."
"So? Barnes isn't here, y/n. He didn't want to be. You were his ideal because you were leaving, because he didn't have to worry about anything real developing. As soon as you considered staying, as soon as you became real, he disappeared. Steve lives in the real world. He likes the real things. He likes being depended on. He likes problems because he likes overcoming them. The only fight he's ever backed down from was when he almost let Winter Soldier kill him in an attempt to jog Barnes' memories."
"And that says more about why we're not going to be able to make it past the obstacle than anything, because Bucky is the obstacle and Bucky is of utmost importance for Steve."
"I think, if you worked together, you could get past it." Wanda said, before pointing at the Nintendo Switch ad in the magazine. "I think we need one of these."
"That'd be awesome. We should set up a gaming room! I've got a bunch of board games in a box somewhere, and in another box, I've got a bunch of old video game consoles! Oh, my gosh! That's a great distraction!"
"PlayStation or XBOX?"
"Both, also Wii. I never bought into the whole console wars. I just waited 'til i could find 'em used or super cheap and bought all of 'em."
"Now you're going to ignore your feelings via video games." Wanda said, matter-of-factly.
"Yup!" You said, jumping down from the stool and heading to George's closet where your still-packed boxes were stored.
The next morning, you came into the kitchen with George in a baby sling and smiled at everyone. "I set up a game room yesterday. Cards, board games and 12, count 'em 12, different video game consoles. It's the room that was empty next to Georgie's, so... If anyone's interested..."
Clint walked out of the kitchen immediately, bowl in hand, spoon in his mouth. Natasha followed, calmly. You grabbed a pack of Poptarts out of the cabinet and headed back toward the game room. "Nat, I don't wanna be player two. Nobody wants to be Luigi." Clint's whining could be heard down the hall.
"Shoulda got here first."
"I did get here first! You stole the controller when I turned my back to put down my stupid cereal. Come on! Let me be Mario."
"When I die."
"You're a bitch."
"So are you." Natasha said, as Super Mario World music started to fill the room.
"Well, I didn't mean to start fights." You said, sitting at the card table and pulling open the Poptarts. "This was supposed to be fun."
"Oh, don't worry. You didn't start this fight. This is ongoing." Natasha responded, turning her head to look at you, but continuing to play. She jumped on several Koopa Troopas while her head was turned.
"Yeah. Every time we play anything, she's gotta be first. Shit, she's even Player 1 when we play Pong." Clint complained.
"You did all of this since last night?" Steve asked, looking around at the games and consoles. "You're amazing."
"I'm aware." You smiled, grabbing a box of playing cards and tossing it to him. "What kinda card games you know, Army?"
He chuckled. "I know poker." He offered, opening the box and sitting down across from you. He shuffled the deck easily.
"I've never played. Wanna teach me?"
"If we're doin' poker, we need to play with Monopoly money, 'cause we ain't having a replay of Cap's birthday." Sam said, dropping into the chair next to you.
"What happened?"
"Stark threw a July 4th bash and Maria Hill conned me into playing poker."
"She didn't con you, Sam. She offered, you accepted. She beat you, and me and Clint and Tony, fair and square." Steve responded with a smirk.
"Whatever, man. She hustled us." Sam said, as Wanda sat down with a fistful of multicolored dollars.
"Just because you fell for her saying 'What is a Full House again', doesn't mean she hustled you. You should have known she could play."
"I barely knew the woman! Whatever. Gimme some pink lettuce." Sam demanded.
Wanda handed out an even amount of Monopoly dollars to everyone, while Steve shuffled the cards. You lost. Badly. Between not knowing what you were doing, listening to Clint and Natasha bicker over the Nintendo, giving attention to the baby in the sling across your chest, and the nervous pit that grew bigger every time you locked eyes with Steve, Wanda and Sam cleaned you out of your play cash in no time. You bowed out of the game with a smile and headed across the hall to your room. About 15 minutes later, Steve was walking down the hall. "They busted you, too, huh?"
"I'm 90% certain Wanda's cheating. She's just too good, ya know." Steve smiled, leaning against your door frame. "Thank you for setting up that room. We haven't had much to do since we've been... criminals, and half of the comedy left when Scott did, so... distractions are welcome."
"That was the point. Crazy underground bunker gets a bit..."
"Yeah." He chuckled. "Yeah. Hey, uh, when you get a minute... I, uh, dug out some of my old sketch books, if you-"
"Definitely." You stood, quickly bending down to pick up Georgie from his bouncer. You followed Steve to his office, where a stack of books sat on his desk. Steve took George from your arms and you picked on up. It was full of sketches of the things and people around him, some very detailed and lifelike, some purposely cartoonish caricatures. "These are really good, Steve. You have such a mastery of shadow."
Steve blushed, but you barely noticed as you ran your fingers across an almost photographic sketch of Natasha's face. You flipped a few pages until you got to a picture of Tony Stark looking lovingly into Pepper Potts' eyes. "I really like that one. Tony looked so human in that moment. I had to sketch it." He smiled. "This was at the July 4th party. They didn't know I was watching. I took a quick picture with my phone and drew that after I got home. I was gonna give it to them if Tony ever got around to popping the question."
"You'll have to send it to them. It's perfect."
"Well, I don't know about 'perfect'."
"Please, everything about you's perfect." You said, nonchalantly. You continued through the sketches, studying your favorites before moving on to the next. When you got to the bottom of the stack, you looked over at him. He was doing 'tummy time' on the floor with George. "Are you not drawing, anymore? These books, the latest date is two years ago, almost."
"Uh, no, I-I am, it's just..." He got up on his knees and looked over at you. "The sketches in the new book are... not finished." He seemed unsure of that answer.
You chuckled. "Okay, well, when they get finished, you gotta let me see 'em, because you are so good at this."
"Thanks." He said, standing and stepping over George. "Means a lot." You just looked down and smiled.

"She's not going to make a move." Wanda said, her eyes on her cards.
"Neither is he. Thinks it'd be a slap in Barnes' face or somethin' to go out with the chick he walked away from. I dunno."
"Well, maybe they need a push." Clint suggested as Mario fell to his death and Natasha wrenched the controller from his fingers.
"This isn't a Rom-com, Clint."
"It could be." Clint turned around, looking at the two at the table, each trying to bankrupt the other of their fake money. "All that really requires is two clueless assholes who don't realize they're perfect for each other, an antagonizing force or event and a couple friends to set them on the right course. I'm pretty sure this is a tailor-made Rom-com situation."
"I'm all for manipulation for the sake of romance, but what could we possibly do to make them stop focusing on Barnes?" Natasha asked, eyes not leaving the screen.
"Well, we could tr-"
"Trapping them in a room together isn't going to work. They've roadtripped together. Twice."
"Okay. Fair point. What if we-"
"Telling one or both that the other is sick or injured would be cruel. They just got done dealing with Georgie's cancer."
"We could-"
"Cap can't get drunk."
"You know what, Nat?! You come up with one!"
"Babysitting." Natasha said, succinctly. "We convince Steve to take her out for some much-needed fun and we offer to babysit."
"Sure. If you wanna go simple with it." Clint grumbled, flopping back down on the couch.
"I'll talk Steve into it, later." Natasha finished.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I'm just sayin' she looks like she needs a break." Natasha looked up at Steve from her spot in his desk chair, her feet up on his desk.
"No, you're just saying that I need to take her out. I didn't take you for a bandwagon person, Natasha." He responded swatting her feet off of his desk.
She shrugged. "Only if the music makes sense, Steve."
"How does me courting Bucky's girl while he's incapacitated make sense?"
"He ghosted her. He left her, let her go through her pregnancy alone. He didn't want her or the whole family thing. You think he'd be upset that you took her out for some fun?"
"Okay, you weren't on our side in Germany so you missed the animated way he spoke about her. He talked about her like she could be his salvation, like she was everything he ever... I've never heard him talk about a woman the way he spoke about her. He 'ghosted' her because he was terrified for her, how his life might end hers. How could I even entertain taking the one thing he's wanted?"
"Easy. You take her out and ignore the frozen guy thousands of miles away."
Steve sighed, heavily. "Bucky's gonna wake up one day, Natasha. How would I explain that y/n came around looking for him and I was taken with her, so I took her from him?"
"You don't. You wouldn't have to. If he cared about her, he'd want her dating a quality guy. He'd want George around good people. If he cared, he'd want you guys together."
"I don't know. It just feels wrong."
"No. It doesn't and that's why you feel guilty." Natasha stood. "Ask her to dinner, Rogers. She's got a bunker full of folks who would love to babysit." She smirked as she walked out of the office.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You looked up as Steve walked into the game room. "What are you playing?"
"It's called Crash Bandicoot: Warped. It's... I don't even know how to describe this game."
Steve watched you for a few minutes, before clearing his throat. "So, I was wondering if... if you wanted to come to dinner with me tonight." You turned your head, staring at him in shock. The game over screen was suddenly on the screen because a boulder crashed into you as you stared. "Sorry. Didn't mean to get your... bandicoot killed."
"What did you say?" You whispered, dropping the PlayStation controller on the couch next to you.
"I asked if you wanted to go to dinner with me." He sat next to you, moving the controller out of his way. "There's a restaurant in the Bronx, the original owner was part of the 107. I saved him from HYDRA, so his grandson always has the Chef's Table free for me. We could go in through the back door. He makes the best burgers."
"Uh... are you... are you asking me on a date, Steve?"
He chuckled, running his hand through his hair. "I am. I think we need some time out of the compound and I'd like to spend it with you. If-if you wanted."
You bit your lip. "Of course. I would love to. But what about-"
"Natasha volunteered to babysit." Steve stood. "So... I'll pick you up at your room at 7?" He asked, with a smirk. You nodded, still a bit dumbfounded that he asked you out. "All right. I'll go make our reservations."
"And I'll... go take a... shower." You stood, turning off the PlayStation and heading for your room. Milo knocked on your door as you were trying to figure out something to wear.
"So. He finally asked you out?"
"It's not... I'm sure it's not like that."
"I'm sure you're lying to yourself. Captain America has invited you to dinner. Is not for no reason. Is because he likes you. You like him, too."
You shook your head. "Come on."
"When did you become a pussy?"
"Excuse me?"
"When I met you, you were going for what you want. You weren't lying to yourself about things right in front of your face. Did motherhood soften you so much or are you still holding out hope for James to come back when he ran away from you?"
You took a deep breath. He was kinda right. You wanted Bucky and you went for him. Why should you feel so bad about wanting Steve, especially when Steve obviously wants you, too. "Bucky's a good man. I might be pissed off at him, but what if that's why I'm so receptive to Steve? Maybe I like Steve because he reminds me of Bucky and-"
"You like Steve because Steve is amazing. You'll see after you go on this date with him."
"Maybe. I don't even know what to wear."
"Jeans and the purple blouse."
You sighed, looking at the outfit he picked. "I don't know if that'll work. I don't think it'll fit."
"It'll fit. You've lost most of the pregnancy weight. Go on. Try it on." Natasha showed up at your door. "I'll do your makeup, Wanda can do your hair."
"No. No, no. This is not gonna be a whole big-" You said, shaking your head at the Russian.
"It's a date. You oughta let us help you." Wanda said, pushing into the room with a hairbrush and a curling iron. "We know it's just dinner, but still. You want to look your best."
You took a deep breath. They weren't going to walk away on this. Stubborn Avenger friends. "Fine." You rolled your eyes and sat in your desk chair as the women started to attack you with hair brushes and makeup brushes.
