Tamales House, 7622 Reseda Blvd, Reseda, CA 91335

This was the year that I planned to find the best tamales in town, but then I ate too many tamales and had to pause the quest. However, I couldn’t resist a place called Tamales House.

The tamales are made fresh daily by hand, with no lard, and no GMOs. They are also gluten-free. There were a dozen varieties, including beef, pork, chicken, 4 vegetarian kinds, and 5 sweet kinds. The pumpkin spice tamale was a seasonal offering. Meat and vegetarian tamales are $4.05 each. Sweet tamales are $3.01. Their tamales are larger than average and they come with salsa (red and green). They don't skimp on the fillings, the tamales are moist, and the meat is not dry.

Pumpkin spice tamale: The idea of a sweet dessert tamale didn’t appeal to me but I do like pumpkin spice. This tamale was moist and sweet, but not crazy sweet. It had pumpkin pie spices and pumpkin puree. Very nice with a cup of tea. I personally would have preferred a savory, spicy pumpkin tamale.

Chicken in green sauce: nice, moist, fluffy masa, lots of shredded chicken in a mild green tomatillo sauce. Chicken wasn't dry.

Pork in chile California sauce: I could really taste the pork and corn, the chile sauce was mild but probably so you could taste the pork. Shredded pork wasn't dry. Masa was fluffy and moist.

Beef in chile California sauce: Similar to the pork tamale, could really taste the beefiness of the shredded beef

Jalapeno & jack cheese: Lots of cheese, slightly spicy, very tasty, moist

Tamales House also serves Mexican food: tacos, tortas, burritos, quesadillas, flautas, nachos, breakfast plates, and menudo. You can get a breakfast tamale plate with two eggs. The meat choices are boring: pollo, asada, and pastor.

The restaurant looks like it’s been around a long time – no frills, in a working class part of town. There are five tables and the walls are a bright orange. The clientele seems to be primarily Mexican. Credit cards are accepted but if you pay with cash, you get a 4% discount.

Tamales House is in a strip mall with parking.

rewatching the scene in 2.08 where Abigail tells the story of Alfred Hamilton's murder to Flint and Miranda and two things stand out:

That Alfred Hamilton's ship was bound for Charles Town when it was fell upon by the Walrus and Alfred was murdered, and thus, Teach's prophecy in 3.01 that "everything moves towards it end" is fulfilled. Flint was never going to escape Charles Town. He was always going to be sailing that route toward a grim and tragic end. He was always going to be following the path of his own tragedy, trying to make things right and never ever succeeding.

That it was after the murder of Alfred Hamilton that Peter Ashe decided that he would "dedicate his life to eradicating [the pirate issue.]" This tells me that Ashe probably was not aware that James was "Captain Flint" before this point, but the fact that Hamilton was "hunted" confirmed his identity - and that made Ashe very scared for his own life. According to Morley in 1.04, Hamilton's ship was attacked "a number of years back" and so we can assume that Ashe has been living with this knowledge for at least five years, maybe more. He spent all that time trying his utmost to eradicate pirates all because he was afraid of one pirate in particular. He was afraid of his past misdeeds finally coming back to haunt him in the shape of Captain Flint, who would either kill him or expose him for the liar/traitor he was. I suppose that tells me the same thing that this first point told me - the ending was never going to change. Whether Flint and Ashe had met with Abigail acting as a buffer between them or not, it was always going to end with Ashe trying to exterminate Flint. I highly, highly doubt that he had good things in mind for Flint in 2.10 the way he claims that he does. He knew England would never forgive Flint for his crimes or for his sexual identity. But he knew he could manipulate the situation to where he could get rid of Flint, never had to fear for his life again, AND be hailed a hero for finally subduing Nassau. Reconciliation was never on the table, only Ashe's purely selfish motivations.

okay, i've got a couple. first is the one i would set to holy ground by banners, and i wrote a whole long post about it here, back in june.

other than that, recently, i had this vision of a romcom style kiss set to heal me by snow patrol. like i don't necessarily think it would play out like this (the other hc i linked i think is more likely imo), but god do i want it to.

basically, eddie is at home and something happens where he Realizes that he needs to confess and he needs to confess now. so he calls buck, who's just getting off shift, and asks "where are you?" and buck is like "on my way home." so, eddie rushes over to buck's apartment, and buck, who should have beat him there, isn't home. then, he calls buck again, and again, asks "where are you?" and buck answers, "home." then eddie starts to say "no, you're not i'm--" only for buck to interrupt him and say "no, eddie, i'm home." and that's when eddie finally catches on.

so he rushes home, and as he's pulling in the driveway, buck's opening the front door, leaning against the frame. while eddie's walking up to him, buck says "that was quick" and as eddie nears him, he replies "they finished construction on sunset, so no more detours." and then eddie reaches him, frames buck's face with his hands, and kisses him <3

Hello, sorry to bother you, but I was reading your older posts and now im so hyperfocusing on Dick Casablancas. He’s potentially the worst person ever, and I think I still really like him??? It doesn’t make sense, but he had so much room for character development!!! He had been through so much trauma and had a objectively pretty bad childhood/parents, and I think he could have been a really decent person if he was allowed to be anything other than the comic relief. Also I love your work.

this is literally the opposite of bothering me. you’ve given me the go ahead to talk about this piece of trash garbage boy as much as i want and for that you have my eternal gratitude!!

honestly, when i say i love dick casablancas, i’m talking about the version of his character that i have created in my head where s3 explored his trauma and he actually worked through his shit and became a better person. but alas.

the big thing to remember with dick is that he was supposed to be a minor character, but the writers liked ryan hansen so much that they started writing him in more until he became a series regular. so by the time they decided they wanted to write him as this funny, likable character, they had already set him up as a guy who treats women like shit and does creepy things with rapey undertones.

and honestly, this is understandable! they didn’t realize how fun dick’s character could be until they had already made him into a shitty person. the problem is that instead of addressing it, they chose to ignore it and hope the viewers would forget.

obviously the biggest problem with dick’s character is him encouraging cassidy to rape veronica as established in 1x21. the writers wrote it thinking that dick would remain an unimportant minor character and that the rape plotline would end with duncan, but they chose later to write dick a bigger role and retcon the rape, giving his actions real, dire consequences, and there was a conscious effort to make the viewers forget about the worst thing the character ever did. it’s a really shitty part of his character, and there’s no divorcing dick from his actions, but the writers could have acknowledged it and had him grow past it, especially after s2 when cassidy’s abuse came to light.

cassidy’s plotline gave them a perfect opportunity to explore dick’s shitty past actions and have him reflect!! sexual abuse thoroughly fucked cassidy up, and s3 could have been a great opportunity for dick to take a step back and see the effect that his gross non-consensual actions could eventually have on the girls he harassed, but the writers ignored it in favor of writing him as the two-dimensional comic relief.

dick had an incredible amount of potential after everything went down with cassidy, and we saw the writers tap into that a little bit with the scene in 3.01 where he shows up at logan’s suite and cries, the scene in 3.18 where he asks logan about what happened on the rooftop, and the scene in 3.18 where he calls his dad out on his bullshit (as well as the more subtle way they had him spend basically all of s3 drunk), but they could have done so much more with it and just didn’t!! dick is genuinely one of, if not the most traumatized characters on the show and we deserved to see that side of him much more than we did.

also like you pointed out, dick is the product of two shitty parents, and i think it would also be super interesting to explore his relationship with his dad a little more! because dick was his dad’s golden boy, but his dad also treated cassidy like shit, and to have dick deal with that and kind of start to realize the negative lasting effects his dad’s toxic masculine ideals continue to have on him would’ve been so interesting. so many of his shittier traits are learned behaviors, and that would have been so interesting to highlight

also. this is irrelevant but how fucked up is it that the only place dick had to go after he was kicked out of his dorm was to the building his brother threw himself off of??? how lonely is he that that is the only place he has to go??? and how hard is it for him to live there for at least a year??? the fact that he came to logan’s suite saying “i have nowhere else to go” ...the thing is he could’ve easily gone home because his dad skipped town and kendall’s dead but like??? he chooses the place his brother died over the place where he lived which is absolutely heartbreaking. like, the neptune grand is where cassidy left mac, tried to kill veronica, where he killed woody, and where he killed himself and dick still chooses to live there. and i’m definitely reading too much into it but part of me is gonna put his decision on the fact that he lived in his house with cassidy and didn’t notice anything when he was being abused/killing people/raping veronica and if he lived there alone guilt would definitely overpower him. but at the grand logan is there and dick’s not alone and yeah, it’s where cassidy died, but dick wasn’t there to witness everything that happened that night, and he really couldn’t specifically have stopped the actions of that night, but he blames himself for not noticing something was off with cassidy and bullying him and being home might remind him of that.

in conclusion: girls don’t want boys girls want a solid narrative arc that focuses on dick casablancas and his unresolved trauma. thank you so much for the valid asf ask.

MONTHLY MEDIA: January 2020

Hey here’s how I spent the start of this fine new year!

……….FILM……….

Parasite (2019) I was so focused on the plot that I don’t think I fully appreciated the beauty in this film. Watching this video helped a lot. One thing I admit (light spoilers to follow...skip past if you don’t want anything spoiled) is that I assumed there would be some sort of genre/fantastical element to the whole film. Because I’ve only seen The Host and Snowpiercer (loved both), I think I expected there to be a genre component to the whole thing. When they go down into the basement I really thought it was heading in that direction, and I definitely felt a little let down because of it. BUT after seeing the whole film, I feel like the themes and narrative were stronger because of how real it all felt. (END OF SPOILERS) I think it’s a film I’d like to rewatch to better appreciate the layers, but ho boy is it an emotional gutpunch.

Jojo Rabbit (2019) Just the best. The structure and (some) of the characters felt familiar, but it’s that comfort that makes the changes or introduction of an imaginary Hitler all the more interesting. Beautifully directed and the shifts in tone are so seamless that I really have a hard time pointing out where they happen.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) A little late to this but it was as good as I’d heard. It had the pacing, spirit, and lightness of late 90s/early 2000 adventure movies and I hope more films like this are getting the go ahead. Now to wait 3 years before seeing the sequel.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie (2019) A fun road trip movie that dips into scathing commentary on hollywood and talk shows? Absolutely. It worked well in building off of the webseries and the bloopers during the end credits really made it for me. Also I should’ve been playing Comedy Bang Bang Bingo while watching the movie. Anyway it does a great job of balancing the mean with genuine character moments and glimpses of sincerity.

The Bachelor (Episode 24.01 to 24.03) It started out so promising (with the Hannah Brown return) that I was really primed for a format-shaking season. Nothing can quite live up to that beginning and it’s doing the show a disservice. Maybe if they just focused on nice reasonable dates and women getting along it would feel more substantial than the contrived fighting and lies we’re getting. I still believe that the most engaging season will actually be the one with the least drama. Perhaps I’m in the majority for thinking this.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Episode 3.01 to 3.03) Reeeeeeally digging this season. Maybe it’s that there isn’t much relationship drama, or because the relationships play a part in the larger plot (as opposed to Riverdale...but that’s another can of worms). The Cthulhu and carnival stuff are offering a nice mix and we’re really getting lots of monster-of-the-week stuff so far. Hopefully there’s more to come!

Swamp Thing (Episode 1.03 to 1.07) It started out strong and moved at a nice pace, but it lost me. Some episodes had a monster-of-the-week, and those were fun but there was a lot more focus on the locals around the town instead of Swamp Thing. I appreciate a Swamp Thing-centric show would cost a looooooot more, but I also think that’s what most of the fans would want, right? Maybe if it was a 4-ep series it could really go all out and make a splash.

Dracula vs. Hitler by Patrick Sheane Duncan (Complete) The title and back cover allude to a different, pulpier story, and it takes a while to adjust to the less bombastic narrative. The alternate history you DO get is great, and I think it’s because I didn’t mind a story with a hint of vampire set during the second world war. I’d still love to read a pulpy vamps vs. nazis novel, so if you have one then let me know. This wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed it.

Head Lopper Volume 3: Head Lopper & the Knights of Venora by Andrew Maclean and Jordie Bellaire (Complete) There’s been a shift and a progression across the first three volumes of Head Lopper. It’s gotten more bold with its storytelling, a little more loose with its artwork (sometimes a hit and miss...I frequently go back because I feel like I’ve missed something in a previous panel) and the sheer scale of the world is expanding so quickly. It’s quickly becoming my favourite modern comic that captures the spirit of what I imagine pulp stories to be. Worth checking out vol. 1 if you haven’t already.

The Magicians: Alice’s Story by Lev Grossman, Lilah Sturges, and Pius Bak (Complete) If you haven’t read any of the Magician’s trilogy by Grossman, this is a great point of entry to see if you’d like the tone, characters, and general premise. If you HAVE read the first novel, this doesn’t branch too far the main narrative. I would’ve liked to spend a little more time with Alice on her own outside of what we see from the novel (and Quentin’s point of view) because what we do get is fantastic. I’m not sure it adds a lot of new elements to the novels but take that for what it is.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Legendary Edition  by Akira Himekawa (Complete) As far as a comic adaptation of a game, it really retains a lot of the core components. There are fun asides and elements get expanded further and it reads really well. Adaptations across media can be tricky but I think this is worth checking out if you liked the game. With that said, there’s a bonus story at the end that is so unrelated to the game and core world that it felt like a miss. It just felt like the author had a completely different story to tell and tried to shoehorn it into this property and it didn’t work. So if you pick it up, know that the best ending is the one you got in the game.

Yo, Is This Racist (Podcast) I’ve only recently started listening to this, but I really dig the format and the hosts are fun. Part reflection on current events, part interview, part commentary on society...it’s just all very good and funny and also good again.

Baby Is You (Arvi Teikari) Never have I felt more frustrated, rewarded, and impressed by a game. I originally thought it was a sort of “there are endless ways to solve each stage!” game but it turns out the later levels have very specific solutions and that changed my perspective. It’s challenging but fun and uses lots of logic and creative thinking and I just don’t know how to describe how great this game is. Playing it on Switch is nice for the ease of playing a level or two before quitting, but I’m sure it’s fun elsewhere as well.

Neverland: A Role-Playing Game (Andrews McMeel Publishing) So I wrote a setting based on J. M. Barrie’s works and it’s getting published! The weekly group is taking a break from the megadungeon to try this out and it’s been a lot of fun! I will post more in depth recaps of the party’s adventures but so far, they’ve found a small village and nearly died to crocodiles.

A Red & Pleasant Land (Lamentations of the Flame Princess) It’s been aaaaaaaages since this group has had a chance to get together but it’s always so fantastic when we can make it work. The game is really getting to the point where the party has done enough that their actions are having consequences and the group...is adjusting to this. Right now they need to investigate a murder that they themselves are responsible for and I’m VERY keen to see how they approach it.

It: Chapter One (2017) in s3, part one

“all the bad things that happen in this town are because of one thing. an evil thing.”

this whole season has been a love letter to stephen king, citing many of his works. it: chapter one was referenced heavily in 3.17 but it’s been in the mix since 3.01 (item 1).

in it, every 27 years an evil entity comes out of hibernation to torment a small maine town, stealing children and making adults blind to what’s happening. a group of kids, all bullied outcasts, decides they’ve had enough and try to hunt it down and kill it. that’s not easy to do when it knows all their deepest fears and uses these to trick, torment and hurt them.

in rd, people are also being shown things from inside their own minds; hallucinations of fear or guilt while under the influence of drugs (like the gk figure or dead midge). and, at the farm, dead loved ones (item 3).

in the same way that the presence of the evil thing in derry, maine, is signaled by countless missing children posters, the town of riverdale has been marked with threatening graffitied symbols of the gargoyle king. the creepy children’s tv program that brainwashes every derry household is similar to the g&g game and perhaps even to the farm’s infectious influence spreading through the township.

whether or not the farm and the game are connected, both subplots withstand comparison to the film. also, this season’s emphasis on the themes of lost childhood innocence and a little bit of exploration of a town’s past.

instead of following the same characters from childhood into adulthood like in the novel it, rd presents a narrative of evil confronted first by the parent generation and then again by their kids (item 4).

there’s also a parallel between the losers club’s blood pact and the midnight club’s spit pact. interestingly, these were completely opposite promises: the losers club promised to return to derry if it ever came back, while the midnight club promised to conceal what happened and never revisit it.
