Day 8

My goodness, time really does fly when you’re having fun.

Today was/is our last day up in the sticks with Grandad - we head back to Nairobi tomorrow to catch a plane down to the coast.

Slow morning (what’s new!) and we spent some time packing our cases and sorting out what we want to take with us down to Malindi. It’s a medium size plane down to the coast, so we can only take a certain weight down with us. We’ve all downsized drastically and are just taking a weeks’ worth of stuff in two cases rather than all our stuff in four. We’re going to pay a bit more so our nice taxi man tomorrow will drop the spare cases at Brenda’s Nairobi apartment to keep safe.

Once we did that, I was going to shower, but apparently we had to leave for 11:30. No one told me anyway.

This time, we turned right on the main road to Naro Moru village to visit St Phillip’s church, just up on the hill.

This was the spot the late Majesty Lizzie prayed at and planted a tree, three days before she became Queen after the death of her father when she was visiting Treetops in 1952 - another famous landmark but wasn’t on the list this time. It’s the big one just to the right of the door.

Any other time, it wouldn’t necessarily be top of my list of things I’d want to do or see, but given recent events, it felt like something special to go see.

Anyways, we got there and the gate was shut. Wicked.

Managed to get a few pics through the hedge while Grandad and Foy looked at the car engine. Apparently the engine temperature gage is also now playing up and was telling us it was about to explode. False alarm though!

Turned around and went back up towards Nanyuki to our favourite watering hole, the One Stop, for lunch.

Most of us had lovely curries and a chicken pie.

Foy, in true Foy style, had pancakes and honey - I think this is the third time he ordered pancakes for lunch and the waitresses thought it was hilarious. But hey! If it ain’t broke!

To be fair, he did also get a salad to take home. Glad he’s getting some vitamins in somewhere.

Back to the house for 3ish, and in good time too, as the heavens opened. It’s been very very very dry here recently, more so than usual, so the rain was very welcome and helped freshen the air.

We got some ice cream from the shop on the way home too and invited Muthoni and her two children to join us for a sweet treat!

The kids are so lovely, and I gave them a few bob each for doing such a good job of looking after my Grandad. I have it on good authority it’ll mostly be spent on sweeties and colouring books!

Rest of the eve has been spent showering and sharing what last cans of White Cap Lager and Savana Cider we have left in the fridge.

I had a chat with my bestie Anya (shout out to you hun!) for a while and gave her a virtual tour the house, and we even managed to play a few games of Rummikub with Grandma online, who’s back on Anglesey - the magic of technology will never cease to amaze me.

Early night for us today, alarm set for 5.15am🤮

Hm. Probably some place where you can think about being stabbed in the back a bit less than in any other places. Paranoid sith is so paranoid. And where you can leave your shnacks and there is little chance it will be poisoned after or eaten shortly afterwards. But I think she is not really sure what does it mean to her. She get something she could call home only when she get a Fury and for majority of her life… More likely a line of a “safe spots” to catch a breath. Not real homes.

So talking of homes, she lived on Fury with her crew and some sith warrior and his crew and occasionally some other persons (and still spends there a lot of time, because important business and all that stuff)... Long story. A lot of reasons. After becoming Councilor she in addition get nice apartments in Kaas City where couldn’t possibly feel safe and “in her place” so she sold it and spend money on a reconstruction of an old temple on Yavin’s moon where finally felt good. And at her place. With all that ancientness around. Also – no noisy and annoying neighbors.

For Moru her childhood is one big worst memory usable only for channeling hate, I guess. Because being slave is a rather shitty childhood. Well. At least she wasn’t an alien slave. It could gone even worse.

She hardly has any memories about her parents (they for sure existed and she spend some of her childhood years with various persons who knew them as a marathon stick to be passed), nor even sure what happen to them and not really want to know, I guess. Burn the bridges, cut the ties, kill the slave girl and ascend to being something far more.

And a best memory… Not sure she will try to find there something. Just one big black stripe on a zebra of her life.

And friends. What is that? Why she needs it? Friends from the crew is her first friends. Well. At least the first one she considers as friends in return of them considering her a friend.

Evil fuzzball loves to eat and eats a lot. Also souls of the innocent, but it was already told in one of asks response about Moru (this one - X), so in general and in a blitz way.

No, she didn’t had enough of food to at, because you know, than slave part of her life. Though, she eated enough to do not really starve. Not enough for normal, but not hard starving. No allergies or intolerances. At last found by now. Disorders… Can her constant chewing of something be related? Considering her putting a lot of “energy” into all that fancy force-powers, running and fighting and connection of her eating to her soul-eating. And memories. Probably souls. For various reasons. Let’s say, when you want to be something rather unusual and standing out of frames and something just… different, standing out from the crowd – eating souls is good way to do it. And felt good about being very special little fuzzball.

There are also several botanical extracts such as green tea, sacred lotus, and mistletoe which provide hydration and antioxidant benefits.

How I Use it:

I like to use this essence twice a day. Once in the morning and then in the evening. I enjoy layering this product as well. I pour a couple drops (about 6) onto my palm spread it and then pat it into my face and neck. I wait for it to absorb and repeat twice more. It has a thick, fluid consistency and absorbs quickly into the skin. It doesn’t have a scent. It feels very hydrating and it helps my next products penetrate deeper into my skin.

2020/07/21, 12:30 - Day 7 They’re eating! And pooping! Yesterday I was worried because they seemed to instinctively climb up, so about 2/3 of the litter gathered on the lid while the food is at the bottom.

I fed them 3 different plants: Morus, Trimezia steyermarkii, and whatever the unidentified Bignonia they were laid on. Seems like they preferred the tender Trimezia and left the others untouched (or maybe their bite marks on the Trimezia are more visible?)

Today, I also released a few babies that were clinging to the dead leaves I gave them before. I think this is a good way to thin the litter.

Brandade de Morue (Codfish Potato Bake)

We’re not travelling too far this Tuesday, unless it’s in mine and Jules’ school-days memories, and incidentally, to her birthplace. You see Brandade de Morue, a codfish and potato bake, originates from Southern France, Languedoc, Roussillon, were my sister was born. It was also, in the nineties, a frequent staple of school lunches, and back then, there was not so much interest about using good, fresh produce to make school dinners, and it was always industrially produced, often both too salty and bland.

As Winter is settling in firmly, with temperatures dropping below zero when the sun disappears (sometimes even whilst it shines), I thought a potato and fish casserole would be a warming and comforting dinner. When I announced it to Jules, though, she was skeptical. I held my breath when she ate the first spoonful, but she deemed my Brandade de Morue “very good indeed”, so all I say is, you should try it!

Ingredients (serves 4):

400 grams/ ounces salted cod fillets

770 grams/ pounds potatoes

1 teaspoon coarse sea salt

nutmeg

1 large garlic clove

1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

a buch of fresh chives

1/3 cup olive oil

The day before, place salted cod in a large bowl and cover with cold water. Drain, rinse and cover with cold water, every couple of hours, about four times.

The next day, peel and cube potatoes into a large pot. Add coarse sea salt, and cover with water. Bring to the boil, over medium-high heat, and cook, until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.

Meawhile, bring water to the boil in a medium saucepan. Once water is boiling, add de-salted codfish and boil, 5 minutes. Drain thoroughly and let cool completely. Set aside.

Preheat oven to 205°C/400°F.

Grease baking dish with olive oil. Cut the garlic clove in halves, and rub one half all over the baking dish; set aside.

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them and mash them thoroughly with a potato masher. Grate in about 1/4 teaspoon of the nutmeg. Mince garlic and add to the pot, along with cracked black pepper. Finely chop chives, and add to the pot as well. Flake in cooled codfish. Give a good stir, with a wooden spoon, to combine. Then, stir energetically as you gradually pour in olive oil in a stead stream, to emulsify. Potato and codfish mixture will become paler, almost white, and smoother.

Spoon potato and codfish mixture into prepared baking dish, levelling with the back of the spoon, and place in the middle of the hot oven. Bake, at 205°C/400°F, for 25 to 30 minutes, until just golden brown on top.

Serve Brandade de Morue hot, with dressed lettuce and Croûtons.

Abstract

The root-knot disease of mulberry (Morus alba L., Cv.‘S1’) caused by Meloidogyne incognita Kofoid & white, Chitwood is very wide spread affecting more than 80% plantation in different parts in India. This disease reduces plant growth, leaf-yield and leaf-protein content significantly. The use of chemical pesticides may achieve a measure of control of those mulberry diseases but there remain the problems. To move forward, it will require new and more efficient solutions, technologies and products. Our best endeavor is to focus on the Cowpea plants which may have important economic implications for sericulture in future. Cowpea (Vigna ungyculata L.) cv.5269 and mulberry were alternately grown together along a ring in a large circular vessel; M. incognita larvae (J2) were applied as an inoculum at the center of the ring so that all the plants were equidistant from the larvae. A control vessel containing the same plants without inoculation was maintained simultaneously. Plants were harvested 70 days after inoculation. Of the two plant species; Cowpea received maximum infection in terms of root- gall number, root protein content, and nematode population in root and plant growth parameters. Thus, Cowpea could serve as highly effective cover crop protecting mulberry from invading larvae. This way Cowpea could serve as highly effective Climate Friendly Catch Crop protecting other crops from invading larvae and increase soil fertility. The farmers would be benefited double; by controlling root-knot nematodes in the naturally infected sericulture field and by buying and selling the cowpea fruits regularly from the intercropped sericulture field by enriching soil nitrogen and improve environments also. Intercropped cowpea also improves the plant growth by effectively which directly increase photosynthesis rate and significantly reduce CO2 in the environment and it would not only be easier way, easily available, cheap but also conserve our biodiversity which will contribute towards “Global Green, Growth and Green Economy i.e. Sustainable Climate, Health and Development by controlling root-knot diseases which is sometime devastating to all kinds of natural and artificial vegetation”.

Introduction

The use of chemical pesticides may achieve a measure of control of those mulberry diseases but there remains the problem of residual toxicity in the treated plants and this toxicity results in reduced palatability of the leaves to the feeding. silkworm larvae, reduction in growth of the larvae and in silk production as with the nematicide furadan @ 13kg/ha [1,2]. A number of plant bio-nematicides though effective and easily biodegradable [3,4] are not easily available in large quantities from natural sources and isolation of only a small quantity of an effective metabolites requires huge quantities of plant materials. This would result in rapid depletion of natural resources, particularly in tropical regions. Indiscriminate use of plant resources has already created problem of biodiversity conservation in these areas [5]. Bio-nematicides from animal origin (nematode extract) reduce Meloidogyne incognita infestation in different plants and root callous by using their defense response against M. incognita infection. But it has some problems about collection of large quantity of M. incognita females, preparation of nematode extract (NE) and some limitation in field application. To overcome these situations, primarily we have already observed that cowpea could serve as highly effective cover crops protecting other susceptible crops from invading larvae [6,7]. The objective of the current study is to observe the relative attractiveness of two plant species; mulberry and cowpea for M. incognita, which would help in identifying the more susceptible plants for possible use as cover crops.

Materials and Methods

Preparation of soil

Two circular concrete vessels of 68cm diameter and 22.5cm depth were filled with a mixture of sandy soil and yard manure (2:1 vol./vol.). Vessels were placed on polythene sheet before filling the soil. The vessels were then treated with boiling water five times for denematization.

Plantation

The vessel was planted with mulberry (Morus alba L) Cv. ‘S1,’ cutting (10inch length and 12g weight) collected from Sericultural Composite Unit, Sriniketan, Birbhum, West Bengal, India. Seeds of Cowpea (Vigna ungyculata L.) cv.5269 were germinated aseptically and planted to the vessel alternately with mulberry in a circle of 36 cm diameter around the center of the vessel. There were 20- plants; 10 from each species of plants. Though Cowpea was a fastgrowing plant, it was planted 15-days later than the mulberry plant because mulberry cutting took some days for developing its root system which maintained the plant growth as uniform as possible and at the time of cowpea plantation all the plants of mulberry were pruned. A duplicate vessel containing the same plants were maintained as the control. All the plants were irrigated every morning and evening with tap-water.

Inoculation

The plants were inoculated at the day- 30 from mulberry cutting plantation when they were 6-leaf stage. At the center of the vessel a hole (1.5 cm wide and 4cm deep) was produced. Inoculation in the form of 3,40,000 J2 in 10- ml tap- water was applied in the hole which was immediately covered with soil.

Harvesting

Seventy days after inoculation all the plants were uprooted from each vessel and the following parameters of growth and nematode infection were recorded: shoot length and weight , root length and weight, root-gall number, nematode population per 2g root and 200g soil, root and leaf-protein content and the leaves per plant. Three samples of root and leaf from each species of plants were taken at random and the total protein fraction in each sample was estimated [7-9]. Data were analyzed by ANOVA. The experiment was repeated five times with similar results and all the data from the third experiment reported here.

Results

All the data are expressed in the form of a ratio; Control / Test and presented in Table 1. Cowpea showed maximum in growth with high intensity of nematode infection. Cowpea was more susceptible than mulberry in terms of root-gall number, root population of nematode, root- and leaf- protein content and the number of leaves per plant. Further, mulberry plants showed comparable growth, root-and leaf- protein content and the number of leaves per plant between the control and inoculated vessels. It has also the lowest root–gall number and root population of nematodes (Table 1).

Discussion

The result of the vessel experiment confirmed our earlier observation [6,7,10-14] that nematode infected plant showed reduced growth, leaf protein content and leaf yield and the root protein content at mulberry plants did not increase as in other vegetable crops [6,10-14,17]. It is evident from the observation that cowpea was more susceptible to M. incognita than mulberry. This does not mean that mulberry is resistant to root-knot nematodes. In contrary, mulberry is a very good host of this nematodes. However, root-knot nematodes preferred to feed on cowpea rather than mulberry when it had a choice. It can be assumed that the relative size and biomass of the two root systems are responsible for the difference in susceptibility between the two plant species. Here the Cowpea root system colonizes and occupies the large area, it is likely that the plant parasitic nematodes will preferably be found in its roots [6,10-13]. And the positive effects of growth of both mulberry and cowpea plans may be responsible for defense resistance against other plants pathogens and induced growth in all parameters [6,10-13,18].

It may also be assumed that the critical role of biological nitrogen fixation and the amounts of N transferred to associated non-leguminous crop- mulberry determines the extent of benefits. It is also reported that in intercropping, land equivalent ratio (LER), benefit cost ratio (BCR) and monetary advantage index (MAI) are used to assess the productivity and its economic benefits [19]. Choosing of the right crop combination is very important in intercropping systems due to the fact that plant competition could be minimized not only by spatial arrangement, but also by combining those crops best able to exploit soil nutrients [20]. Plant density has also been reported to influence N2 - fixation, but total N2 -fixation activity on an area basis appeared less variable [21].

We have already observed that cowpea was more susceptible to M. incognita [6]. The present vessel experiment further showed that cowpea was more susceptible to M. incognita than mulberry plant. This does not mean that mulberry is resistant to M. incognita. Rather mulberry is very good hosts of this nematode [1, 2,3,7,10,18]. However, M. incognita preferred to feed on cowpea than mulberry when it had a choice. Thus cowpea could serve as good cover crops there by reducing M. incognita infection of other vegetables and they can also be cultivated as intercrop with many highly economical plants where chemical control possess health hazard to many economically important larvae , herbivores, soil micro and macro fauna, and man due to residual toxicity in leaves and soil. In the latter case cowpea could be harvested at frequent intervals to keep the nematode population to a minimum level. Thus, cowpea could serve as highly effective cover crop protecting other susceptible crops from invading larvae and the farmers would be benefited by shelling the cowpea fruits regularly. In this way we not only protect our environment from pollution but also conserve biodiversity [23].

Conclusion

Thus, Cowpea plants could serve as a good catch crop there by reducing M. incognita infection of mulberry. It can also be cultivated as intercrop with many highly economical plants as substitute for chemical control as this possess health hazard due to residual toxicity in leaves and soil to many economically important larvae, herbivores, soil micro- and macro- fauna, and man. This system is useful in terms of increasing productivity and profitability, water and radiation use efficiency, control of weeds, pests and diseases. It is noted that the inoculated ones are as good as control in all parameters for the critical role of biological nitrogen fixation and the amounts of N transferred to associated non-leguminous cropmulberry determines the extent of benefits in intercropping, land equivalent ratio (LER), benefit cost ratio (BCR) and monetary advantage index (MAI) which are used to assess the productivity and its economic benefits. The principal reasons for smallholder farmers to intercrop are flexibility, profit maximization, risk minimization, soil conservation and improvement of soil fertility, weed, pests and diseases control and balanced nutrition. This way Cowpea plant could serve as highly effective Climate Friendly Catch Crop protecting other crops from invading larvae. The farmers would be benefited double; by controlling root-knot nematodes in the naturally infected sericulture as well as agricultural field, and by buying and selling the edible fruits regularly from the intercropped field. We easily enrich our economy, protect our climate from pollution, conserving solar energy by photo synthesis of plants, reducing CO2 by increasing O2 which resist global warming, and also conserve our biodiversity. These cost-effective eco-friendly cowpea plants are easily available, high environmental tolerant, biodegradable, non-phytotoxic and non-pollutant. It can be used as Cover plant. It conserves our biodiversity contributing towards “Sustainable Climate Health and Development i.e. Global Green, Growth and Green Economy” and it is the most appropriate, economic and sustainable solution in the recent time. And finally, Cowpea plant may not only have important economic implications in sericulture but also in agriculture to fulfill its Food and Nutrition requirement”.

Aside from canon ones, there aren’t many divergences in resources. Well. She has a damn lot or persons whose help she can use if get in situation when her knowledge is not enough. Even if it some kind of creepy af spiritual or Force matters. Like. That constant hunger. Never satisfied. Even by darthburgers with triple, well, cutlet or how meat part is properly called, and all extra toppings. Moru hasn’t any pets or animal mounts due to her starting to happen problems with animals. Ya know. Dark side, bad for aura, especially if you are her kind of a sithy sith. Though it is not RUN BOI RUN, what is tend to be with animals when they are near Vit. Yes, there is some critters that are yaaay about darkside, but not, she hasn’t any. Maybe some day. Rideable terentatek. Dreams, dreams.

And prized possessions. If I get right what is it. Her prized possessions are various artifacts, books, items from excavation sites, items related to Kallig’s heritage, and all that. Most of them are somewhat valuable, historically or just, you know, cost a damn lot of moneys. Some also dangerous, for example her “dark books of dark arts”.

Moruhin is a quenya themed construction, referring to Moru, name belonged in Tolkien’s works to the precursor of Ungoliant. Evil spirit that used to appear as a something spiderlooking and done many shits by herself and in company of a Melkor-Morgoth, the shittiest shit of a whole Arda. Moru by role is a lot alike to her. Precursor simply, though there are differences. Nevermind, not sufficient to now.
