31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 30: Favourite Ship

When someone asks me about what my favourite Rammstein ship is, my standard answer is friendship. For me, that's one of the things that make Rammstein so special. They have stuck together for not just the duration of the band, but from long before that.

The majority of the band members have played in Rammstein for more than half of their lives. Some of them have played together in bands for close to 40 years. And still, they seem to have enjoy each other's company and have fun together on stage.

To illustrate this, I have picked the five photos Richard Z. Kruspe posted on his Instagram last June, with the following captions (inspired by Placebo's song Pure Morning):

Day 30 — Favorite Ship

My favorite ship is Tipaul 🥰

I love the relationship between these two ! Well ok they have chaotic energy when they are together. But I believe there is more. Till liked Paul (and Flake) right away, and it's completely mutual. I also think that Paul is very attentive to Till and his well-being, he seems to understand Till in all its complexity. He doesn't like to see Till hurting himself, we can see him worrying about him in some making of. And then they share moments together, like when they go swimming in the Baltic Sea in northern Germany. In addition, they both have a passion for small dogs.

I also really like Tillake 🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏻

Till and Flake. Flake and Till. The best duo of the band, always there for each other. A real love at first sight between these two ! And complete confidence. Flake is a real support for Till, he is also the one who is sent by the others when there are changes to be made in Till's texts. And Till is always there to protect Flake (or steal stuff for him). In addition they share almost everything together, their dressing room, the routes to get to the studios and a weird humor that they are the only ones to understand.

And finally, I like Tillchard ❤️‍🔥

Till and Richard is arguably the most canon ship in this fandom. They have been through so much together. Of course there is Rammstein, but before that there was poverty, the fight against the Nazis, the bond of the family and their children, the unfailing support, in particular of Till towards Richard. Till and Richard is solidarity, solidarity in the darkness of anonymity and solidarity in the lights of glory.

Day 27: Favorite Pre-Rammstein Photo

A long, long time ago, I used to be in bands with some of my friends in high school. We were never successful; heck, we never played anywhere other than the basement that was our "practice space," but it was some of the most fun I ever had.

And for some reason, those feelings resurface whenever I see pictures of Feeling B. Something about those days always struck me as special.

Honorable mention goes to Richard and Till. I always forget that the members of Rammstein have lived together at different points in time, but I always found the evidence to be kind of cute.

Day 6 — Favorite Member

Well okay for this one I didn't hesitate. I guess you know who my favorite member is. I've been telling you about him every day since 4 years now. 15 000 posts on this blog are dedicated to him. I am of course talking about Till Lindemann ! I already had the opportunity to say how much I admired him, how much he meant to me. Maybe I overdo it sometimes, but I can't help it. After all, everyone admires one or more people, it even seems to be rather healthy and very classic or common. And if it can reassure you, I'm not an erotomaniac and I'm not even sure I consider myself a groupie outside of this blog... I would never go as far as waiting for Till outside his hotel for example. I also know where the boundaries are.

I admire him a lot. I admire his talent, or rather his talents because he can literally do anything. I admire his strength to stand and move forward despite his broken heart and tormented soul. I admire his generosity, his originality, his team spirit and his curiosity that pushes him to reach out to people and take an interest in them. I wish I could tell him all this face to face, and tell him how much he means to me, that he has made me grow, that he has made me gain confidence, that he makes me dream and brings me happiness. During all the years I have "known" him, he has been a real emotional support when things went wrong in my life.

I hope that you too have found "your Till". If you have, keep him or her or they close to your heart. If not, I keep my fingers crossed that you will find this person one day. In the meantime, here is a flower 🌹 to thank you for reading me and to thank those who have the patience to follow and support me.

Day 27 — Favorite Pre-Rammstein Photo

I love the photos of the boys before Rammstein. We are lucky that they had photographers by their side during that time, whether with Feeling B or with First Arsch. I'm sure Matthias Matthies must have plenty of archives, a real treasure ! Just look at the Saddle Up booklet to realize that. And I'm not even talking about the private archives of the guys themselves !!

My favorite pre-Rammstein photo is this one (source), taken by Robert Conrad :

Till in 1987 rehearsing with his band First Arsch in a hall in Wendisch Rambow. Barefoot, shirtless, with only his pants and suspenders. And the gaze full of melancholy turned towards the window. What is this 24 year old young man thinking hidden in his corner behind his drums while the guitarists play ? To his daughter, who must have been only 2 years old at the time ? Writing a secret poem ? Who knows...

31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 26: Favourite Pre-Rammstein Photo

Picking a favourite pre-Rammstein photo is very hard. I am generally fond of photos. Many of the old ones are of bad quality, but for me, that's part of history. That's probably one of the reasons why I dislike AI editing so much. Sharpness of a photo, where an AI has guessed what a person is supposed to look like, does not equal quality. It sends me straight into the uncanny valley.

That said, there are many great photos from the pre-Rammstein eras as well. Unfortunately, very few of them are of Oliver Riedel. I guess it comes as no surprise that I picked a photo of him for this challenge: The Inchtabokatables by Richter.

This photo is spectacular as it's one of very few photos of Oliver with more than a tiny bit of hair on his head and no facial hair. As it was taken before the release of White Sheep, the first album Oliver participated on, he is most likely 21 years old in the photo. I love the few glimpses that exist of him pre-Rammstein.

I'd like to add a few honourable mentions: 1) The one Richard Z. Kruspe graciously shared with us on Instagram just after Till Lindemann turned 60. Unknown photographer. 2) Magdalene Keibel Combo on stage in Steinbrücken, from the book Freiheit Blues und Scherben (my scan). 3) And to get one of Schneider, too, a poodle haired drummer from the In Amerika documentary.

Day 11 — Favorite Live Video

There are many videos that I like to watch over and over again, and from all eras. I like to see how the band has become a heavyweight in the world music scene. Their evolution has been phenomenal. The way they've crafted their characters, their setlists, their choreography, their pyrotechnics, and their stages is great. You can tell they've thought of everything.

I like this video for several reasons :

First of all, Till's "what the fuck" entrance with the sparks hanging from the boots and the not at all risky jump (*irony*). It's actually on this song that he will get injured in 1999...

We can also talk about the make-up of the guitarists. The dark lipstick and the silver hair are everything... I'm not sure why but they made me think of The Rocky Horror Picture Show the first time I saw them.

Then there's Schneider doing weird things with his face during his solo. He makes me laugh so hard every time I watch this video.

Of course, I can't not mention Flake's crazy dance, with his long legs, mini shorts, long boots and long coat, he looks like a puppet who got tangled in his wires. What energy !

Day 13 — Favorite Picture Official or Unofficial

Another question about the photos. I like it. There are several official photoshoot that I like. I can mention for example Bryan Adams' photoshoot in 2015 for Zoo Magazine; Olaf Heine's photoshoot for the promotion of Reise Reise in 2004; again Bryan Adams in 2022 on the occasion of the release of the band's eighth album; Andreas Mühe's photoshoot in 2012 on the occasion of the US tour, one for SZ Magazin and the other completely naked; the photoshoot for the Untitled album in 2019 by Jes Larsen; Mike Hutson's photoshoot in 2001; Olaf Heine's photoshoot in 2016 in Brazil; Gottfried Helnwein's mythical photoshoot for Sehnsucht in 1997 and 1998; Eugenio Recuenco's photoshoot for the single Amerika or the album Liebe ist Für Alle Da. And I'm not even talking about Frédéric Batier's photobooks, Jens Koch's exceptional work or Matthias Matthies' all too rare ones !

In short, there are a lot of official photos that I love. Rammstein was lucky enough to work with some very talented professional photographers !

I have selected a few that I particularly like :

Photo taken in 2005 on the very famous Bernauer Strasse, a historical place that perfectly reminds us that Rammstein's history is intimately linked to Germany's. I really like Olaf. If Matthias Matthies is the one who has known the band for the longest time (even before its creation), Olaf is the one who has collaborated the most with Rammstein, be it for live photos or photoshoots.

A photo from P.R Brown's photoshoot at Tommy Guns Barber in New York City in 2010. I find them really beautiful, very classy. It's a bit of an unusual photoshoot, because usually you see the guys either in the studio, in "industrial" locations, or on or near the stage. I don't know the story of this photoshoot, why they took these pictures in this place with these outfits. But the rendering is very classy !

This photo is from Jens Koch's 2019 photoshoot for Rolling Stone magazine. I like to see the guys wearing something other than dark colours. In this case, we are served with this photo, they look (almost) angelic. I like this picture because it's been 4 years since the guys had a photoshoot and 10 years since an album promotion photoshoot. And yet, there they are on top of each other, still united. Well, Richard seems more united with his Till, even downright possessive, but they all seem happy to be together and that's what counts !

That's it for the official photos. For the unofficial photos, there are two that I love :

This one of Motor Vertrieb taken at a tug-of-war competition and featured in the late Gert Hof's "band biographical" book. Just because Till and Paul make me burst out laughing every time I see it.

And this one by Danny Uhlmann in 2017 at the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. It's so rare to see the six of them doing (off-stage) activities that it's touching. And I'm adding a heart to this photo for skin care !

Day 10 — Favorite Live Photo

Ah I love the questions about the photos! I love live pictures, it's one of my great passion in life ! I can't thank enough the professional or amateur photographers for the wonderful pictures they give us of Rammstein ! Thank you !

Some time ago, I already told you about my favorite picture of Till of all time. Well, he has a lot of pictures of Till that I like, on the last tour for example, I was completely obsessed with this photo :

I used it as a wallpaper for a while. I can't really explain why I like it... the arms maybe, I think I am an arm fetish... And I love black and white photos, I find that it gives something unique to a photo, especially tour photos, where sometimes it seems like all the photos look the same (because the shows are all more or less the same in terms of light and colours).

Anyway, this challenge is about the whole band, so I'm going to talk about my pictures of the guys on stage ! As you may have guessed, I am unable to choose just one so here is a small selection of photos I like to see.

First of all, what I like is when photographers capture moments of interraction between guys. How do you know a band is still alive ? When they are performing. How do you know a band is alive and well ? When they are having fun and enjoying themselves doing what they love. But there aren't many of those, I think it's easier to film than to photograph. And I feel that the bigger their scene, the more the guys feel the need to create interactions. But I like their moments of fun, of tenderness, when they reassure each other, I like to know that these moments exist. I was lucky enough to capture one of these moments myself last year. As I write these words, there are three pictures that come to mind instantly, here they are (attention spoilers of day 30) :

I also really like the panoramic photos of the stage. In particular the monumental stage of the 2019-2022 tour. But I must admit that the second and smaller stages are also very photogenic, and I'll give you two photos that really impressed me :

I also like the photos taken from the stage where you can see the audience. I find it really impressive. I don't know how the guys manage to get up on stage with all those people. I couldn't do it. But, it's a great view :

And finally, my favourite photos of the band on stage are the ones where all six of them are lined up, facing us, facing their audience. I like these photos because it shows their unity, a unity of the band, not in the face of hardship, but in the face of success. A success that could have torn the group apart. What are they thinking when they stand like this ? Are they enjoying the moment ? Do they realise how far they have come since Till had to record his voice under a blanket so as not to disturb the neighbours ? Anyway, I really like these pictures !

31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 8: Favourite B-side or Unreleased Track

Since my favourite single is Stripped, it is also my favourite B-side or unreleased track. It is a bit boring though to pick the same thing twice, so I'll list something else instead.

There are only a handful of tracks (15) to pick from, but there are several nice ones still. I thought about the full German version of Stirb nicht vor mir, about Kokain, and Das Modell, but ended up with Wilder Wein.

Wilder Wein is monotonous and gloomy. The vocals are a bit rough. Still, I really like the riff and the atmosphere of the song. I wonder how it could have turned out if Rammstein had made a studio version, and also, if they had worked on it when Till started singing more than speak-singing.

31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 29: Favourite Merch Stuff

I will admit that I have quite a bit of Rammstein merch. While I am sure I could have done without some of it (especially some of the stuff I got in the Christmas calendar), I'm generally fond of my Rammstein stuff.

For this challenge, I will pick the piece I use the most: My Messer und Gabel ring.

I bought this ring from a friend of mine who didn't use it. After getting a goldsmith to expand it so it fits my thumb, I have worn it every day. I love that it's silver and that it has the knife and fork on it as part of the decoration, because then it so clearly shows which era it is from.

Honourable mentions go to my Oliver hoodie and shirts. A wonderful friend of mine gifted me the Rosenrot hoodie. The Mein Herz brennt shirt is too small for me (why did they only make these ones in women's fit?!), but I bought it because I love the picture so much. The Reise, Reise shirt fits well, and I've even worn it to a Rammstein concert. Finally, I have the Rammstein football shirt with Riedel on the back.

My dream is to one day find a Sehnsucht shirt with Oliver on it.

31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 22: Favourite Reise, Reise Song

Reise, Reise is another strong album by Rammstein. It has monsters like Mein Teil and Ohne dich, which are both really good in their own ways. Dalai Lama is a highly underrated song, and a staple when I am out flying.

My favourite from this album though, is Reise, Reise.

The title song is melancholic, melodious, and I love how Schneider worked out a special drum pattern for it. Reise, Reise was a killer opener for the Reise, Reise Tour, and a perfect example of how Till Lindemann started singing more rather than just speak-singing. And even though I am not that fond of accordion in general, it really fits in this song.

Of course I also like how, in the Making of, Oliver was the only one who said he would like to call the album Reise, Reise. A little funny anecdote from Motor's interview with Richard and Schneider about the album shows how unsure they were about the album title:

What is the new record actually going to be called? Richard: Oh God! We had the working title: "Reise Reise". Then we went through all the old record titles again. "Herzeleid" - "Sehnsucht" - "Mutter" and then "Reise Reise"? That just sounds like shit. Then someone came up with the English translation: "Trip, Trip" (everyone laughs) - that's it! We don't have a title yet.

So yeah, Richard definitely wasn't sold on the title because of the English translation:

“The problem with that title is it roughly translates to ‘Trip, Trip’,” muses Kruspe-Bernstein. “We always base our album names on song titles, but I’m not sure if we’re going to use that. It might sound slightly stupid.”

I'm glad they listened to Oliver. As the bassist told Interia:

«As with our previous records, the title can be interpreted in any way possible. We also understand it in thousands of ways. We can travel by car, by plane. We die. Death is a kind of journey, too. There are plenty of possibilities to explain the title. First and foremost, it is a journey from beginning to end.»

31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 19: Favourite Herzeleid Song

I really like the Herzeleid album. It has a raw, unpolished energy to it, there is talent and ambition, and there are really good songs. This first album had songs that Rammstein had toured with and thus tested in front of an audience. When I listen to Herzeleid, I don't skip any song.

Among my absolute favourites on the album are Asche zu Asche (great example of how strong riff makers Rammstein are), Heirate mich (which for me got a renaissance after seeing it live so many times last year), and Das alte Leid.

Still, the song that is my favourite, is Laichzeit.

In the beginning the song actually sailed under my radar, however, once I started really listening to it, it stuck. The riff is powerful, the synth is great, and I love the energy of it. Too bad Till doesn't want to perform this song anymore, because I would have loved seeing it live.

31 Days Rammstein Challenge - Day 17: Favourite Live Moment

Rammstein is a fantastic live band, and they have so many memorable moments. Though my favourite moment has to be one that I experienced myself. Potential picks included the time Oliver Riedel came down from the stage and stood about half a metre away from me to give his pick to a little girl in the front row two spots to my right, and when Paul Landers came down to the front of the stage and I got to shake his hand.

However, I decided to go for the whole third concert in Gothenburg, 30.07.2022. This concert is the best Rammstein concert I have been to. I was there with so many good people, the atmosphere was fantastic, the band was in a great mood, and it was simply a wonderful experience.

Day 17 — Favorite Live Moment

Like the rest, there are plenty of little moments that come to mind when I think of Rammstein live. First, the noise. The band is not known for being discreet. Every time I saw them I felt the ground shake under my feet. I also really like pyrotechnic effects, one of the most emotional moments for me was in 2009 during the song Engel and the wings of Till, but I will come back to that tomorrow. I also like the little things, like the interactions between the guys, between the guys and the audience, if they don't give long speeches, they always find a way to have fun with us. Even if in general you have to wait to see the videos and photos to notice all these little gestures.

My favorite moment, a moment that I experienced live in Paris during the Made in Germany Tour, is Bück Dich. Everything was perfect !

When the perfect figure of Frau Schneider and her 4 puppies appear, it immediately puts you in the mood. The chills at that moment, everyone started screaming. And seeing them slowly cross the catwalk to join the second stage was an exceptional moment. Schneider was really scary, he took his role as Frau very seriously and you could hear his wand slamming on Till's ass. This entrance is monumental ! And then the song started and it was an electric energy that went through everyone. Bück Dich is a fucking banger ! And finally what everyone expects during this song: the little game between Till and Flake. As I was placed to the Paul side (like at all the concerts I do, Rammstein or not), I didn't always see what they were doing, but there are movements that can be recognized from afar, if you see what I mean.

And then there was Till's jet which sprayed the first rows and I couldn't take my eyes off this huge guy who was ejaculating on strangers ! Who do this ? It was so memorable, I loved that moment so much. And then the band went on another banger with Mann Gegen Mann and calmed everyone down with the song Ohne Dich. Then they returned to the main stage waving to us. So cute. I'm a bit sad they took that song and choreography off their setlist...
