27/09/19 Toucans at Parque das Aves

We’ve made it to Brazil, the second country of our adventure! We’ve seen the Iguacu falls from the other side, and met the best birds in Brazil.

The bus to Brazil yesterday did not go quite as seamlessly as we’d hoped. All was fine and dandy as we stopped to go through passport control at the Argentine border, drove over the bridge to the Brazil side, but then awkwardly sailed through the Brazil border without stopping. We’d read how important it is to get your passport stamped as you enter Brazil, to avoid issues at the airport when you try to leave, so Sam caught the bus driver’s eye in the mirror and looked back worriedly at the border office. The driver pulled over and let three of us off, then barked at us about our luggage. We had no idea what he was saying, but eventually it became clear that he wanted us to take our luggage as he had no intention of waiting for us, so we hit the pavement and he sailed away. We got our passports stamped, and then looked around feeling a bit lost. The other guy we were with spoke to the officers hanging out outside the office, but he was going up to the falls and not the town so not particularly helpful for us. We could have caught a local bus, but of course did not have any money in the right currency at this point, so we sat under a shady tree for an hour, very much hoping that the next bus from our Argentinian bus company would let us on it. Fortunately, it did, so we relaxed under a tree for a while until the potentially sticky situation worked out all OK, phew!

We got off the bus and sweated through the short walk to our hostel Melize's Garden, which was very lovely and the guy who checked us in was very nice to us, with lots of information about the right local bus to get to the falls. He also explained how to use the key which was helpful. We went for a swim and soaked up the last of the sunshine, then went for an evening walk round the area. Spoilt for choice for italian and pizza options but very aware of the cost of everything here compared to the cheapness of Argentina. We stocked up on food at the local supermarket and confused a checkout guy by asking about cashback, then he confused us by talking about loyalty card discounts (if that’s what he meant). Got cash out and went home to cook.

The internet generally agrees that Puerto Iguazu (Argentina) is a nicer place to stay that Foz do Iguacu (Brazil). We would agree that they are very different, and that there seems to be more to do on the Argentinian side, but Foz is definitely more of a real place. There are offices and supermarkets and real people doing normal things, whereas Puerto Iguazu oozes tourism from every inch.

 We woke up this morning, made sandwiches and walked down the street to the green bus stop to head up to the National Park. One of the girls we met in Argentina had said the bus cost 20reais (about ₤4) so we were smug that this was obviously a local bus with very few tourists and only cost 3reais. The bus drove past a big wax museum, a shopping centre where most people got off, loads of billboards advertising the duty-free free store across the border, and the airport, giving us pleasant reassurance that the journey tomorrow will be nice and straightforward. We also expected to have to get a bus between the waterfalls and the Bird Park, but the entrances are all in place so avoided some faff there.

The Brazilian side of the falls was very different from the Argentine side – After a short double decker bus ride (we managed to sit upstairs yay) there is just one short trail (only a few km) and it was heaving with people, so did not have the same feeling of being plunged into rainforest. The Brazilian riverbank is the steep side of the gorge, so not much space for lengthy hiking trails, but it did have amazing views across to show the full extent of the waterfalls. Towards the end of the route is a walkway across the river at a medium level, getting everyone close enough to the thundering falls to get soaked and get a great sense of the power of the water. The spray throws up intense rainbows, almost circular, and with a bit of patient queuing some fantastic photo opps.

We sat on a wall and had lunch, got the bus back to the park entrance, and wandered across the road to the Parque das Aves (birds). Sam bought some icy cold water from a street vendor which made us happy.

The Bird Park was incredible, exceeding all expectations and fully earning the great reviews it gets online. Aviaries are integrated beautifully into the rainforest, with many of the “enclosures” completely open to the surrounding forest, the birds presumably lured back with good food. There is loads of information about the conservation work they are doing, with breeding and reintroduction programmes for endangered species. We have become very fond of the Atlantic Rainforest, of which only 8% of the original area survives. The park has lots of walk-through aviaries, and a massive highlight was when a toucan flew down to perch and show off on the handrail right in front of us. It was huge, and it’s beak and eyes were so brightly coloured they didn’t look real. He sat there posing and strutting about for photos for ages, what a dude. As well as a multitude of brightly coloured birds – parrots and eagles and owls and flamingos – we saw more crocodiles, turtles, tortoises, iguanas, butterflies and a really cool massive spider. We also saw one bird sat on top of another, not in a sexual way but just chilling, very weird.

Eventually we dragged ourselves away from the park and caught the bus home in time to catch a bit of sun by the pool.

MAKE BARATINHA COM RESENHA DOS PRODUTINHOS MAIS EM CONTA DO MOMENTO Então, no vídeo dei uma breve faladinha sobre o que achei dos produtinhos, mas vou deixar o nome deles aqui, preço e minha opinião sobre cada um do que achei a longo prazo e depois de ter usado mais de uma vez. - Base Ruby Rose (cor L2), 17/15reais (não lembro ao certo, sorry): sobre a tão falada base, ela cumpre o que promete. Creio que vai muito de uma preparação de pele boa e de saber passar. No vídeo não gostei dela na hora, contudo mais pro meio do dia já estava satisfeita porque minha pele ficou mais natural e sem o craquelado de ressecada que tava antes, podemos dizer que ela demorou pra se adaptar. Fiz uma make em outra pessoa com ela também e gostei bastante do resultado. Ela é boa para quem tem a pele oleosa por ser matte, e pra quem tem a pele mais marcada e seca como estava a minha indico usar um hidratante antes da aplicação. Nunca trocaria uma MAC por ela, mas vocês podem conseguir bons resultados, e para as makes de dia a dia me deixou bem satisfeita. - Corretivo Ruby Rose (cor L1), 10reais: já o corretivo me deixou bem satisfeita de cara, uma cobertura melhor do que a que eu esperava e trabalhou muito bem com uma base de melhor qualidade embaixo. Acho um grande investimento, e ótimo custo benefício. Lembrando que corretivo é bom de usar 1 ou 2 cores menos que a base. - Lápis delineador Ruby Rose (preto), 3reais: um dos meus novos xodós. O preço é absurdamente bom e a qualidade também. Sou chata pra lápis de olho porque sempre borra ou não é pigmentado suficiente, esse promete ser a prova d'água e creio que cumpre, sua cor é super satisfatória. O nome é lápis delineador porém não uso para delinear, somente como lápis de olho. - Lápis Branco Luisance, 3reais: é um bom lápis, porém achei pouco pigmentado de for marcar a linha d'água no olho. Pelo preço é um ótimo quebra galho. - Rímel T&G 4D, 15reais: estou apenas chocada com esse rímel, ele é 2 em 1 e deixa os cílios maravilhosos, ele é um pouco carregado, usaria um pente de cílios para não grudar tanto do início e não sobrecarregar, mas todo rímel novo é assim. Esse com certeza foi meu preferido e voltarei a comprar. - Primer Panvel, 19reais: esse já sai das comprinhas do centro, porém usei pela primeira vez no vídeo, gostei do resultado e da textura, mas não sei se um hidratante há não aguentaria bem o tranco. Claro que são propostas diferentes, mas se estamos falando de preço, seria uma opção. Espero que tenha ficado bem explicadinho e se divirtam com essas novas opções de makes baratinhas pra gente parar de economizar na make.
