the post is from 2013, and I'm going to assume the theory still applies today unless someone who knows differently says something.

For your kicks 120-180 hz is where it's @. In most large PA systems energy in this range is generally covered very specifically by one driver/cabinet, often referred to as the 'kick' section. A good example is the Funktion one Res 4 cabinet, which has a kick section that extends from 114-445hz. This range is pretty important because it will contain a lot of the fundamentals of natural tones, as well as providing a sense of power and tightness in the system. It's of note that most PA's bass bins really don't put out that much power sub 40, often even 50hz. Funktion one are a good example of this - the F215 and F218 cabinets response tails off quickly beneath 60 hz unless they're used in massive stacks (where the coupling of the horn's mouths allows for greater low end extension). Even then they'll only get down to 45hz at -3db before puffing out entirely. It is of note that the frequency that clubs generally have a problem with leaking out is actually 80hz! Stuff above 100 (think kicks) is more readily absorbable - but what happened to all that sub bass? It was never really there! Some systems favour sub bass weight (martin audio's dual 18 inch reflex cabs for example), but I think that funktion one have the right of it - you don't need an insane low end spl to carry the drama of most dance music. In fact an overabundance of sub bass and lack of upper bass just makes everything sound muddy and undancable. That's because percussive transient bass sounds typically work their magic in the upper bass region and in most environments room nodes won't mess with your groove at these freqs i.e. you won't be facing time distortion from ringing in the low end - erk! I'm really not saying people should avoid using sub bass in their kick drums, or even that this 120-180 hz range should necessarily be emphasised tonally, obviously a kick should fit the track. But if you're looking for punch it should really be the range that sticks out in your mind. A kick drum is comprised of a falling tone, and paying attention to the timing of that fall, the harmonics within the sweep, as well as the shape of the decay of the tone will really pay dividends if you can get the kick to work in the 'kick' region.

Why bass cabs have trouble with drop tunings and 5-strings, explained.

So as many of you may have experienced, many bass guitar cabinets have a tough time with drop tunings and 5-string basses. They lack output in the lower end and/or get rather sloppy-sounding. Here’s why: So in this first plot, we’ll take a look at the transfer function curves (which basically show how the enclosure alters the basic response curve of the speaker in free air) for a rough analog of a typical 4x10 (yellow) and a 1x15 (cyan). The first thing to note is that the 4x10 shows an output of -10dB at around 45Hz. This corresponds with the low end of the published frequency range of an Ampeg SVT-410HLF. This is relevant to understand because it means that the cabinet will appear roughly half as loud at 45 Hz as it does an octave higher. And because low E on a standard 4-string tuning is actually at 41 Hz. At 31 Hz, which is the where the low B on a 5-string is, it’s off the scale. (It’s -20.6 dB, or ~ 4x quieter, in case anyone cares)

In this next plot, we’re looking at the SPL curve, which projects real world output levels in dB, measured at 1 meter distance. Here, you’ll notice that the difference in output levels between the two cabinets is considerably less than in the previous transfer function plot. This is a result of the difference in efficiency between the 10′s and the 15.

But it’s in this next plot that we begin to really see why bass cabinets tend to have trouble with the really low end. There’s three dynamics at play here. First, bass cabs are generally tuned rather high, on account of the woofers typically used having a rather high resonant frequency (Fs), and to minimize the volume of air space taken up by the ports. Ports get longer as either the cabinet gets smaller, tuning frequency gets lower, or port area gets larger. Second, universally, cone excursion increases rather sharply as the frequency extends below the enclosure’s tuning frequency, which will always be the point of lowest excursion. And lastly, the magnetic strength of the motor itself (BL) drops off rather dramatically as the cone moves away from its at-rest position. The red line in this plot represents the linear excursion limit, i.e. the point beyond which the voice coil will no longer fill the magnetic gap. That’s what causes your cabinets to start sounding sloppy at lower frequencies. In addition to the port no longer properly loading the woofer when playing below the tuning frequency, the woofer motor itself simply no longer has the strength to rein the cone back in quickly, resulting in poor transient response.

So how can we get better low frequency extension, given the limitation of the typical high Fs of musical instrument woofers, you may ask? Well, one thing we can do is just use more woofers! You’d think that means much larger cabinets, but that’s not actually the case. Orange, for example, famously uses in some of their cabinets what’s called isobaric loading, which is basically coupling two woofers together acoustically, either face-to-face and wired electrically out of phase, or one behind the other and wired electrically in phase. This has the effect of cutting the required enclosure size for a given output curve in half. But in addition to using it to make a much smaller cabinet, it can also instead be used to provide the woofers with much more effective enclosure volume, allowing better utilization of a lower tuning frequency. So in addition to the vastly increased low end output, this isobarically loaded 4x10 (green curve), using the same woofers (but twice as many of them), in the same size cabinet, will also have better sound quality in the lower range, because the lower tuning frequency facilitated by the isobaric loading shifts the increased cone excursion further down the frequency range, thus preserving more motor strength at higher output levels, within the frequency range we’d actually be using.

音ゲーを作る際の便利なツール・任意のビットクラッシャーやエンコーダー譜面を作る際のハッキング。 bit数を4~6bitにしてみたり、ビットレートを96kbpsにしてみたりと、あえて極端に音質を落とすことで拾う音をわかりやすくする。逆に音質落とした際にノイズに埋もれる音はキーで拾うのが難しい。・音圧チェッカーここでは T-RackS CS Metering を挙げたが、何でも良いのでラウドネスをチェックしておくべき、Peak, RMSは人間の耳を考慮していないので不十分。 ■ ■ ■ 詳しくはこちら ■ ■ ■ ・ダイナミックEQによるリズム確認出来上がった曲の各パートを聴き込んでリズム・音を確認するにはダイナミックEQを使って各バンドのみを聴くモードを使うと良い。何も持ってないひとはとりあえずTDR Novaを使えばいいんじゃないかな。自分の耳を信じるのと同時に、各種ビジュアライザーも信じよう！
