Today was hard enough as is; your boss was on your case throughout your shift, your romantic partner dumping you for your phony 'best friend' since early teenhood, & now, your car has been towed after your brakes had given out on you. So, to bring all of that to a tally, pesky boss, bad choice in people, & the universe has it out for you. Great. At least you still have your Yamaha parked at home to get to work once the weekend is over, for now.

You thanked the kind stranger for giving you a lift to your home far from the city before hopping out, dragging your feet to the main portion of your house for a quick change of lounge-worthy apparel. Your house wasn't unduly grandiloquent, but it wasn't a hovel either. Well, in your opinion.

Yours is a simple home, holding a whole bath, a half bath, three bedrooms (one guest room, one converted to an office area/boudoir, & the master bedroom), a kitchen/dining room, & a living room where much of your reading materials reside with a padded bay window bench. The storage part of said bench was filled with pens you'd use to fill your books with intimate marginalia, a habit you had formed in your preadolescence.

The mismatched bookshelves lining half of the room's walls, the same walls where a recently sold TV & its stand once stood & your dearly departed folks' (also sold) taxidermied 'trophies' hung creepily, held your numerous treasured tomes of precious comfort characters & scenarios. The hand-me-down couch never looked so welcoming in the time you've owned it, the cushions enveloping you with a loud creak of its aged springs settling after your weary body fully sunk into it. The take-out leftovers you were undoubtedly going to reheat & enjoy later. The garage's sounds never- Wait. What's making all that noise in your garage?

Clangs & clashes sounded from your side garage attached to your home via the pavilion-shielded walkway that practically hauled you towards them after you snatched up the lead pipe you had sitting beside the side doors in case of intruders or large animals. Another habit you formed over your time living alone aside from chronic lock checks & trail cams; inside & out. Your fluffy animal slippers squeak under you with each step but the metallic sounds overpowered them effortlessly. Whatever is in your garage making that commotion must be big. Upset, even.

Now, for context, you do not own just one garage, you just have an average-sized one that can hold two large 4x4 trucks & a normal car that is attached to your house while the rest is well hidden under many shielding. An unconventional, insistent want of your folks was a massive underground base-like bunker that was nearly forty feet high & a floor area of six or more professional football fields (give or take). You had stumbled in there once in your youth while your older kinfolk were working on some sort of immense project that they 'lost' a few days later after telling you it was a secret gift for a very secret friend that you'd never know of. Your memory is hazy, but you still like to go down there via the room-sized lift from time to time for a full disconnection.

The heavy, full metal door groaned in refusal to being moved from its closed position, though you needed to see what or who was causing such a racket; they might be robbing you or something! Most of your stuff was collected scrap parts to 'upgrade' your vehicles occasionally as a pass time & you knew you could replace most of what's in there, but you weren't as expendable as scrap. The noises stopped as bright yellow lights blazed over your half-shown self. Familiar feelings waved over you.

The blood within your body ran cold in milliseconds, goosebumps rose & hairs stood on their ends.

The dual lights flickered, no, blinked at your partially hidden form cowering behind the hinged barrier. You could only make out a hulking mass with the lights sitting where one would expect those of the optical variety to be located & a faint blue liquid around & on the being.

Whatever this thing was, it was a sturdy creature possibly clad in armor of some kind. A warrior, maybe? Your eyes adjusted to see a large gash on what looked like its 'waist' or 'abdominal' region, seemingly lethal. You didn't know much about the anatomy of your own species let alone an alien species.

When the visual hints halted momentarily, auditory ones took the wheel of thought. 'They're hurt!' you thought to yourself. Would this large entity let you aid it somehow, much less near its person? Is the liquid dangerous to you? All decent questions a person with a rational mind would think of in moments like this would have been thought of if your innately bleeding heart wasn't throbbing those reflections to pieces.

Those wide yellow lights seemed to widen as you slowly set the pipe onto the ground, holding your hands up to show that you were unarmed. Seem less intimidating. Try to be friendly in appearance. You smile faintly in hopes of seeming disarming to the hulking shape, speaking kindly to them before gathering metal of your own to introduce yourself.

"It's okay. My name is [Y/N]. What's yours?"

You knelt, holding an open palm out to the figure. Why? You weren't sure, but it felt like the right thing to do here. After a moment of tense silence, the silhouette spoke in a deep, though distressed voice.

"Optimus. My name is Optimus Prime."

Jeep Introduces Wrangler for MY21

2021 is a special year for Jeep as the brand marks its 80th birthday with a celebration of eight decades of 4x4 leadership, open-air freedom and adventure. While looking back at past endeavors, Jeep is updating the Wrangler for model year 21 (MY21) with the introduction of enhanced safety features, increased off-road capabilities and a range of new colors, as well as introducing the new 80th anniversary edition.

Jeep Wrangler MY21 For MY21, all Jeep Wrangler models will be fitted with the 2.0-liter 272hp Euro6D final petrol engine, combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission.  This new engine results in CO2 emission ranging between 243-251g/km, a reduction of 10g/km over the previous generation,  when fitted to the Sahara, Overland and the new 80th Anniversary models, while the off-road focused Rubicon emits between 261-271g/km CO2.

To assist on-road driving, enhanced additional safety features are now included as standard across the UK Wrangler range.  These include the addition of adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop and go, accident emergency braking (AEB) and auto high beam.

Off-road driving has also been enhanced with a series of new features added to the Wrangler range as standard, making it even easier to go anywhere and do anything.  Selec-Speed control, an off-road cruise control,  allows the driver to maintain a steady speed during rock crawling and other types of low speed maneuvering. A selectable tire fill alert can now be set through the 8.4-inch touchscreen. Ideal for off-road adventurers who deflate the tire pressures to get grip on off road courses when traversing mud and rocks, the system will give an audible warning when the desired tire pressures have been reached.

Exclusively available on the Rubicon, the new Off-Road+ (OR+) mode provides unique powertrain and chassis tuning.  Specifically tailored for high range ‘sand’ performance and low range ‘rock’ activity, OR+ adjusts the ABS, ESC, accelerator pedal, traction control and transmission calibrations . Sand mode is enabled when OR+ is activated while in 4H gear and  rock mode is enabled when OR+ is activated while in 4Low.

A new range of body colors, Hydro Blue, Snazzberry and Sarge Green, are now available on the Wrangler range, paying homage to the models history. Nacho will also be available as a limited run, exclusively on the Rubicon.

Jeep Wrangler 80th Anniversary The iconic Jeep Wrangler is also available as an 80th Anniversary special-edition model, featuring Neutral Grey Metallic grille, headlight and fog light bezels and specific 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels with Granite Crystal accents. Full LED high-visibility headlights with auto high beam control, body-cooler hardtop and the 80th Anniversary badge on the front wheel arches help to mark out this commemorative special-edition model, along with a commemorative plaque on the rear swing gate.

The interior features black leather seats with tungsten stitching and the 80th Anniversary badge, along with a leather wrapped dashboard featuring contrast stitching and Berber floor mats. Standard technology content includes the Uconnect 8.4 NAV system with 8.4-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7-inch TFT display and a 9-speaker Alpine audio system with a 552W subwoofer.

Standard safety features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear camera, front and rear parking sensors, Keyless Enter 'N Go, forward collision warning, advanced brake assist and adaptive cruise control with stop.

Like all variants in the Wrangler line-up, the 80th anniversary edition is Trail Rated – the brand’s guarantee of a model’s superior go-anywhere capability.  Featuring the Jeep Command-Trac four-wheel-drive system it uses the Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case to continuously monitor and manage the torque sent to the front and rear wheels to ensure the Wrangler can master even the most challenging off-road tracks.

A year of exclusive events and services for all members of the Jeep family This year will see the Jeep community come together with a series of dedicated initiatives and events,  bringing customers and enthusiasts even closer to the Jeep tradition.  The first such initiative is Jeep Wave, a new program offering Jeep owners exclusive services and special benefits to enhance their sense of belonging to the community at the heart of the Jeep experience around the world.

Included as standard on all new Jeep vehicles purchased or leased in 2021 by retail customers, the main benefits of Jeep Wave include the first three scheduled vehicle services , three years roadside assistance, access to a dedicated premium customer service call center and priority entry to brand events and partnerships.

Our last article involved the appearance of chess boards in publicity photos for Star Trek: The Original Series. However, those sets turned up quite frequently in TOS episodes.

Sometimes they were pivotal in the episode. In “Court Martial” Kirk was damned by the Enterprise’s own computer tapes that clearly showed him pressing the eject button. However, Spock played a hunch (yes, you know he did) and played chess against the ship’s computer. When he won several games in a row, he realized that there was reason to cast doubt on the prosecution’s main witness. As it turned out, Finney had reprogrammed the system, which included the memory banks. So we can claim that chess saved the day in this episode.

Sometimes chess may not have been a major plot point but it aided our understanding of a character. For example, in “Charlie X” we could see a side of Charlie’s nature no one aboard the Enterprise knew about when he melted several chess pieces in frustration over losing to Spock. And in “By Any Other Name,” Spock used chess to gauge how well Kirk’s strategy of frustrating the Kelvans was working on Rojan.

And even if we did not see a single chess set in “Whom Gods Destroy,” the game played an important part here as well. When Garth disguised as Kirk attempted to beam aboard the Enterprise to escape the insane asylum on Elba II, he could not give the correct chess move to counter Mr. Scott’s “Queen to queen’s level 3.”

Of course, there are countless other episodes in which we see the game either appear in Spock or Kirk’s quarters or in the rec room. It’s one of the most famous props used on the show. However, how much do we know about the background of this unique version of chess?

As we all know, the chess board used in The Original Series was often referred to as three dimensional or tri-dimensional chess. The actual board and chess pieces built for the show were in fact cannibalized from other game sets. For example, the chess pieces in the show were already in existence. They were part of Peter Ganine’s Classic Chess set, released in 1961. Ganine created several different versions of such sets and they were highly valued. A complete set of the same version above sold for $1250 on eBay in 2010. And that did not include the original board.  Today you may see individual pieces going for $25.  Btw, from here on out, my main source for this material comes information contributed by Gregory Schnitzer to several discussions on the Trek BBS. Schnitzer was the propmaster for Star Trek - New Voyages: Phase II for many years and was meticulous in his research and duplication of most of the TOS props used in that fan series. I will reference several of his Flickr collections at the end if you want to see detailed photos of his work.

Now the chess board has its own interesting story.  The three large main boards were taken from the then currently available Space Checkers, sold at that time by a company named Checkline. Even though the boards were originally clear, the alternating squares were painted red for the customized 3D chess version. The game of Space Tic Tac Toe itself seems to have made its first appearance in early studio publicity photos. The one on the right above appeared in The Making of Star Trek.

Another ‘60s game, Space Checkers, provided the attack boards of the 3D chess set. They were slightly smaller in size, which gave the Trek version a distinct look once both were inserted onto the metal base and frame. Normally there were four of the 2X2 attack boards that, when added to the three 4X4 main boards, totaled the 64 squares needed for a regulation chess board.

However, if you keep your eyes open, you will occasionally see a set with five attack boards, such as in the same scene from “Where No Man Has Gone Before” mentioned above. This set would then have a non-traditional 68 squares. (Btw, that is Eddie Paskey directly behind Kirk).

All three games often appeared in recreation deck scenes. The photo on the left comes from “The Conscience of the King.” Notice the Space Tic Tac Toe game on the table uses standard black and red checkers. Evidently, the original board pieces were missing. And we see both Space Checkers and 3D chess in “Charlie X.” Props like these, which were both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, added visual interest to the background in many episodes. And it deepened our understanding that even in the 23rd century, board games would still be popular as a way to pass time, keep one’s mind active, and form social groups.
