Song #148
Bang a Gong (Get It On) by T. Rex
It was released in 1971 in their album Electric Warrior
youtube
Fun fact: This was the song that virtually ended the once-solid friendship between Mark Bolan and John Peel, after Peel made clear his lack of enthusiasm for it on air after playing his advance white label copy. Bolan and Peel spoke only once more before the former's death in 1977.

174: NRBQ // Scraps
Tumblr media
Scraps NRBQ 1972, Kama Sutra
Not every record store clerk suggestion is a winner. I’m very much the Vince McMahon rising orgasm meme when it comes (yeesh) to like, folk albums recorded by cults or the Raspberries of Ljubljana, but I mostly couldn’t care less about mid-shelf early ‘70s white rhythm and blues. Still, I added this one to my stack on a recommendation, took it home, put it on the table, flipped it over, put it back in the sleeve, added it to the LP collection spreadsheet that stands between myself and enlightenment, put it on the shelf and didn’t listen to it again until this morning.
Scraps isn’t quite what I thought it was, but also is kinda what I thought it was. NRBQ sounds like one of those bands of professional sidemen, extremely good players fucking around and following through on the pet ideas they’ve come up with while waiting in the studio for the star to show up. Surprisingly though, NRBQ has been its members’ primary meal ticket since the late ‘60s.
If nothing else, the absence of a strong frontman or auteur songwriter means the guys are free to indulge whatever takes their fancy, and on Scraps they really do. “Magnet” is a perfectly pleasant dipshit alternative to early Steely Dan; “Howard Johnston’s Got His Ho-Jo Working” sounds like someone asked a music AI for “white ‘70s boogie rock” and it spontaneously recreated Three Dog Night; “Tragic Magic” is a clavinet-led instrumental blues because keyboardists are emboldened by democracy; "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive / Things Are Getting Better” jams together an irritating ‘40s standard with a Cannonball Adderley number.
youtube
Despite my tone here, Scraps sounds totally fine most of the time, even if it’s not as funny as they clearly think it is, and it does offer one near-perfect gem: “It’s Not So Hard,” a power pop nugget that is uncannily close to Big Star (whose classic #1 Record was released the same year to similar commercial indifference). Though NRBQ can’t touch Bell/Chilton’s harmonies, anyone who loves that band’s misty-eyed chiming would do to give it a listen.
