It's not specifically focused on the 1830's, but the podcast 99 Percent Invisible just released an episode on Parisian "chambre de bonne" apartments that seems like it might be of interest to you. Links aren't allowed in asks but it's the most recent episode on 99percentinvisible dot org, so it should be easy to find!
Ooh, thank you! That is an interesting little essay/podcast! Hausmann gets in everywhere, huh ><
Here's the link if anyone else wants to check it out!

The first designed object: Acheulean hand axe, a shaped rock thought to be a tool for preparing food. Another theory is that it was created as a way of showing off to attract mates. These theories based on function and emotion get to the core of great Design. Hear more in this entertaining 99percentinvisible podcast.

Happy #Vexiday! Here’s a repost from Roman Mars’ @99percentinvisible, way back in 2021 • The Juneteenth flag features a central white star, referencing the Lone Star State where the last of the country’s enslaved population finally learned of their freedom in 1865. Around that is another multi-pointed white star outline, symbolizing other states of the union. These stars are set against a red and blue background. The red arches up to form a symbolic “new horizon” where it meets the blue above. The red, white and blue communicate that the American Slaves, and their descendants are all Americans. The Juneteenth Flag was designed by Ben Haith, revision by Lisa Jeanne Graf. . #juneteenth #juneteenth2021 #flags https://www.instagram.com/p/CjMXTJyLxeU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Personally, one of my goals is to listen to more podcasts but I never seem to get to it. Here’s a list of ideas for when you can listen to podcasts!
when on the car/bus
when in a long line
when taking a walk (use your best judgement)
when doing mindless chores (eg. laundry)
when cooking
when cleaning
when journaling
when getting ready in the morning
when preparing to go to bed
when you have nothing to do
when surfing the web
when driving (use your best judgement)
when organizing
when exercising
when doing mindless work
when walking a dog (or any other pet that is walked)
when playing video games
when editing
when eating alone
when showering/taking a bath
when waiting for an appointment
You can try to fit in podcasts in places where you normally listen to music. If you have any other ideas, please comment to share!

For Places Journal, I took a close look at the politics of shade—as in, what’s under a tree, or an awning, or a bus shelter. As deadly, hundred-degree heatwaves become commonplace in Los Angeles, I make the case that civic leaders should come to see shade—something so simple and elemental—as a resource to be shared by all.
But Angelenos have a complicated relationship with shade. They show up at planning meetings to protest tall buildings that would block views or darken sunbathing decks. Police urge residents in high-crime neighborhoods to cut down trees that hide drug dealing and prostitution. Business owners, as you see above, try to build their own shelters for busriders sweltering in the heat, which the city then takes down.
You might trace this back to a cultural obsession with shadows and spotlights, drawing a line from Hollywood noir—in which long shadows and unlit corners represent the criminal underworld—to the contemporary politics of surveillance. This is a pretty long essay, so if you don’t have the time to read, I summarized the good stuff in a Twitter thread. Or you can listen to me blab about it on 99% Invisible, KCRW’s Design and Architecture, and Not Built For Us, a podcast about environmental inequality.

What style is that house?
A lovely article on the website of one my favorite podcasts, 99% Invisible, about the different architectural styles of homes in the United States.
