sorry for speaking my truth it will happen again. i think my main issue with valax’s redemption arc is literally just that there’s never a moment where the mc gets to actually talk to her about what she did—there’s not really a cathartic conversation, so valax and mc moving past what she did to them feels less like forgiveness and redemption and more like an agreement to ignore the elephant in the room

like sure we got to talk about our trauma (in chapter 17 of 20. lol. lmao, even) to the party, but valax wasn’t present for that?? and like, sure, she says once that she is sorry “for the pain she caused [them]”, but there’s a difference Tew Me between “sorry for hurting you ig ✌️😗” and actually being like “yeah, i abducted you and forced you into a magically induced coma and stole your blood and robbed you of a full year of your life and repeatedly tried to murder you, to say nothing of the grief i caused your loved ones. i did all that shit and i’m sorry for it and deeply regret it, and i acknowledge that you don’t owe me forgiveness, but i will spend the rest of my life working to build a better world for my people instead of being my mother’s pawn”, and a difference between “my mother is unhappy with me for saving you :(” and actually like, giving the mc space to talk about the impact of her actions towards them. like girl you are not getting out of this shit with one sentence’s worth of apology and a sex scene lmfao!!!

during the first half or so of the book the focus for mc is not falling the fuck apart bc they have a friend group to tentatively piece together and they’re averse to showing fear in front of valax, so they’re repressing all their trauma—and by the time valax joins the party, the narrative has gone full Valax Cool And Good mode, and fully allows you to flirt with her and tease her and generally stops taking her seriously as an antagonist. which would be all fine and good if we had actually at any point gotten to be like, “hey, you abducting me and keeping me in a magically induced coma and stealing my blood and trying to kill me has actually caused me a lot of lasting fear and pain,” followed by some set of choices wrt forgiving or not forgiving her for all that in light of the revelation that she did all that shit bc her mom tortured and brainwashed her

Although I'm excited with the new pokeani protags, I'm a bit sad that Ash won't be able to meet Nemona. These two adore battling so much, I feel like they would get along so well.

I bet Nemona and Ash would share the same braincell, meanwhile Arven and Penny are just tired of their shenanigans.

Dates Read: 09/10/23 - 09/20/23

"A girl can dream. A princess cannot.” • This was such a fun read!! The excitement didn’t falter from beginning to end, starting with demons attacking the high school prom to liberating a magical city from tyranny. The concept of different realms warring with each other for power was fascinating and I’m excited to find out how the political aspects thicken in the rest of the series.

Valeria is not only sassy and badass but kindhearted and righteous. She is both a fierce warrior and friend. While she’s still young—only 18—and her naïveté gets her into trouble sometimes, she doesn’t let that deter her from trying to do right by those she loves. And even though dark forces attempt to take advantage of her temper and lure her away from her true self, she’s not afraid to stand up for what she believes to be right in the end.

Perhaps my favorite part was the number of different possible love interests. I was never certain who Valeria would be tangled up with next! Whether it was the friends with benefits high school boytoy Mason, the dedicated blonde dreamboat Gideon, or the charming demon lord Vemdour, I loved them all. Although the bonded soulmate was everything the perfect love interest should be (a loyal and loving savior), it was the dark villain who was my favorite. Despite his trickery and deceit, Vemdour was really funny and generous and taught Val much about her own powers and who she wanted to become.

I’m really looking forward to reuniting with this cast of characters in the sequel and learning more about the magic system and the war between the realms. I have a sneaking suspicion there are many more secrets to be revealed. I’m looking at you Mistress Marjorie!

Ash never went to stay Alola. Couldn't bring himself to, he's that shaken from Kalos. Sure he's interested and all but ultimately decides that he doesn't want to stay, so he returns back to Kanto after dropping off the egg at the school. Kukui takes his class to Professor Oak's ranch and meets his assistant. A trainer who just might be able to help him, help Lillie. Only it isn't that easy, the kid is also heavily traumatized.

Mio had stayed at the party just long enough to place her vote in the contest, almost out of courtesy, but she didn't feel compelled to stick around for the results. After all, she had somewhere else to be. Somewhere more important. Her breath had long since evaporating into puffy clouds by the time she arrived at the pizzeria; although she'd booked a taxi from the mansion, it hadn't been heated at all and the jacket she'd brought with her didn't often as much warmth as she needed, although it matched her outfit perfectly. The soft orange glow oozing out from the glass planes of the pizzeria's door were terribly inviting, and the warmth of the interior and pleasant smell of bread and garlic as she pushed those doors open were just as welcome. She looked around but it hardly took her much time at all to spot Mindy amongst the tables; the place was hardly packed this late at night and, besides, nobody else here was dressed like a pirate. Well, besides Ash anyway; Mio didn't know him all that well.

She approached the table slowly and quietly, before hopping right up to it and letting out a semi-hushed "Boo!" — not scary by anyone's estimations but apparently startling enough for Ash to start choking on a mouthful of his orange soda. "You guys look so good!" Mio exclaimed, although not after throwing Ash an apologetic grimace. "I'd show you my outfit but I'm gonna wait until I stop feeling like a human popsicle. Brrr." Call her immature but the thought of whipping off this jacket and showing off her little goth look to Mindy had her feeling positively giddy. She just figured it wouldn't work so well if she was shivering the whole time. Besides, it was a good excuse to steal a longer look at Mindy's own outfit; it turned out the pirate look really suited them. Or, maybe, Mio was simply more than a little enamoured. Surely, the shades of red dusting her cheeks were just from the cold, right?

She slipped into the seat next to Ash, directly across from Mindy, and let out a sigh, as though there were no greater comfort in the world than the stuffy heating of a family restaurant and the company of a very hot pirate. She'd already managed to forget there was a third person sat next to her, furiously rubbing water from his eyes. Indeed, Mio was lost in the sphere of fascination that was Mindy. "You should have come, it was super fun. I bet you would've gotten a lot of votes in the contest," said Mio, burying her chin into her palms. She had no clue how narrowly she'd avoided disaster. Maybe later, she'd come to see this rendezvous with Mindy as a rescue. "Sooooo, what were you getting up to without me~?"
