"A friend ... said, "You were healed by faith." "Oh, no," I said, "I was healed by Christ." What is the difference? There is a great difference. There came a time when even faith seemed to come between me and Jesus. I thought I should have to work up the faith, so I laboured to get the faith. At last I thought I had it; that if I put my whole weight upon it, it would hold. I said, when I thought I had got the faith, "Heal me." I was trusting in myself, in my own heart, in my own faith. I was asking the Lord to do something for me because of something in me, not because of something in Him." - A.B. Simpson

Living In Kingdom Power
Jesus tells us to pray for God’s Kingdom to be seen on earth. We want people to see our Heavenly Father in all His hallowed majesty and glory—not merely in the ways we attempt to “Christianize” life on Earth.
Listen to the podcast of this post by clicking on the player below, and you can also subscribe on Apple, Spotify, or Audible.  https://craigtowens.files.wordpress.com/2024/01/living-in-kingdom-power.mp3 Last week I shared a quote about this Kingdom Prayer from the YouVersion reading plan The Prayer That Turns The World Upside Down. Let me remind you of one phrase: “This prayer is dangerous,…

What Norse myth books have you read already? I need new recs x
I don't think any of these are particularly new. Trying to make a list of all I've read. And granted, my attention span has gotten worse over the years.
The first book featuring the norse pantheon in any form I read was Neil Gaiman's "American Gods".
There's Diana Wynne Jones' "Eight Days of Luke" which served as inspiration for "American Gods", according to Neil Gaiman. Children's book.
There's also "Odd and the Frost Giants" by Neil Gaiman and his "Norse Mythology" retelling. Children's book.
I LOVED Louie Stowell's Loki: A Bad God's Guide to Being Good, if you have children or trouble getting through books, get this! It's hilarious and smart. I enjoyed it as an adult. Diary of a Wimpy Kid meets Norse mythology.
I enjoyed the first two books by Joanne Harris as a teen, "Runemarks" and "Runelight." The first two (esp. the first) are fun and I love the Bart Simpson-esque portrayal of Loki. Unfortunately, the quality of later books focusing on Loki is terrible.
I unfortunately read Joanne Harris' "The Testament of Loki", first chapter is interesting, but he's unwillingly sharing a body with an annoying teen girl, and the way Harris deals with eating disorders is really bad. It's awful. Don't recommend.
I think Lyra Wolf's The Nine Worlds rising series are an easy read. I think she has a great comedic voice and the books are worth reading just for that, and I like the toxic Odin/Loki relationship. I do have complaints about them, such as the anachronistic language (e.g. Loki knowing what a Chihuahua is), and that Sigyn doesn't have flaws other than caring too much for her no-good brother. She also has the women are either saints or evil witches dichotomy going on in terms of portrayals of goddesses. I think the stakes are good in these books so that you keep reading them.
I enjoyed Cat Rector's "The Goddess of Nothing at All" A LOT. While it doesn't have my ideal morally gray portrayal of Sigyn yet, it did make Sigyn more complex than others have. I also like this book mainly because I am a sadist and I love whump and there's a lot of suffering on it. It's so sad you won't be laughing at the myth!Loki memes. I would avoid this book if you don't like whump. I do have criticisms about it, such as her Loki was a bit too nice for my taste and could have been worse (making him justified for cutting Sif's hair feels forced; he can still be a loveable and tragic asshole, you know?). But my tragedy-loving self loves this!
I was looking forward to Genevieve Gornichec's "The Witch's Heart", it has a cute start of Loki giving Angrboda her burnt heart, but she criminally made Angrboda and Loki boring as fuck. Angrboda conveniently doesn't remember anything and just fumbles her way inside a cave for a large portion of the book. And she is the POV we're following. WE ARE STUCK IN A CAVE SHE WON'T LEAVE. Loki's portrayal in this is one of the most cisheteronormative I've seen yet, and it's surprising the author managed this in a story where Loki is impregnated by a horse and wears a dress (he impatiently yanks off because he felt emasculated). The author thinks having a lean build and no beard=queer. Loki only shows interest in women and feels emasculated while wearing a dress. I also happen to hate Skadi and her weird castration fetish in this book. Bitch wouldn't shut up about it. The good thing about this book is that there's no anachronisms, and I liked Hel's portrayal.
So confession, I had Kindle Unlimited trial briefly, and I read a bunch of Loki books, such as Lyra Wolf's.
I think(?) I read A.B. Frost's "Father of Monsters". It was quite short, but has nice illustrations, and Loki's endearing, even if a little shit. That both takes one for the team and also endangers the team.
I read (partially) some book about Loki escaping his punishment early and rejoining the Aesir, but it was criminally boring (it never described how Loki got out of situations and the prose was incredibly VAGUE) and seemed geared towards Norse pagans(Which I AM NOT). Had a spiritual conflict-avoiding vibe. It was called "Loki" but forgot the author's name and I accessed for free by Kindle Unlimited. I also didn't like that it referred to cops as "Tyr's warriors". FUCK COPS.
I have not finished reading Mike Vasich's "Loki". I think the man thinks MCU Loki is accurate to Norse mythology, because that's the only Loki I could picture (and he was adopted by Odin). And man spent way too long describing sensing "power levels" that I ended up getting bored and stopped reading. I've also seen some amusing excerpt from another of his books I have not read. But, if you're an author, don't spend a lot of time describing power levels, FFS! You'll bore the fuck out of your readers.

J. O. Y. | Eric Gilmour [Psalm 128]
Let's talk about joy the Scripture tells us in Psalm 128 that you will be happy who fears the LORD. This is the way of life, of those who fear GOD—joy!
Joy C.S. Lewis said is the serious business of      Heaven; Martin Luther said I know how easily      one can forfeit the joy of the Gospel.
The Scripture tells us that the joy of men has withered away in connection with their disobedience—the first thing to go when our hearts go astray from GOD is joy!
You see, to entertain sin is to invite sorrow.
Mother Teresa once wrote:
One filled with the joy the LORD preaches      without even preaching; A.B. Simpson said      there is no time Satan in the world tempts      the heart so persuasively—as when it has      lost the joy of the LORD.
See an Angel comes to announce the Gospel & he calls it glad tidings! Good news of great joy & I believe that man is not qualified to preach the Gospel without joy!
He must first be touched with the goodness of joy before he can preach the Gospel of glad tidings. See one of the things JESUS could have done to prepare the Disciples to preach the Gospel is you know teach them some specific method or something..
But what happens is HE pours out HIS SPIRIT upon      them & we know that the fruit of the SPIRIT is joy!
youtube
2.] Wine Gladdens the Heart
HE came upon them, like wine!
Wine was CHRIST's chosen preparation for the preaching of the Gospel—we know in Psalm 16:11 | In the presence of the LORD is fullness of joy!
Not not just joy, but fullness of joy!
And at HIS right hand pleasure is forevermore!
It's unending joy! See we must happily submit      to GOD & find that in this, is the highest way of      life that a man can experience joy.
There isn't anything more joy-filled than being      filled with GOD—as C.S. Lewis also said:
GOD does not give joy, HE is joy
Praise GOD! See HE's with us in every aspect of our lives —to be joy in that, even joy in the midst of sorrow, even joy in the midst of pain!
3.] Joy Obliterates All Other Circumstances
Joy even in the midst of not knowing what to do!      because it's not based upon anything external HE      HIMSELF is that joy! In Ephesians 5:18, Paul likens      the SPIRIT to wine on the day of Pentecost.
The men are not drunk as you suppose, we see      that even in Song of Solomon that HIS love is      likened to this wine of the SPIRIT.
We know that in Luke 5:33-39 that the wine of the      new covenant burst the religious system; and we      know that in Luke 10:34 when we have the parable      of the Good Samaritan, the man is beat up on the      road, he's bloody & he's passed by a Levite & he's      passed by another…
But who is the one who bandages him up?
It's the good Samaritan & what does he use? He      uses wine! GOD does not heal us from being      battered & beaten in this life or by other people      or even by the Church in some circumstances..
He doesn't heal us by mere words or theology      alone—HE heals us with the wine of HIS presence      & HIS SPIRIT, which is inseparable from the heart      being made merry in joy!
The Scripture says in Psalm 104 that
HE gives men wine to drink to make their hearts      glad & their faces glisten with oil! Scripture says      in Psalm 47
YOU O GOD have put joy in my heart! Praise GOD      this is so important, we see also that joy isn't      taking refuge in GOD!
The Psalmist shows us obviously joy is in HIS      presence we see joy is resting in HIS victory      [Psalm 20:5]
4.] Joy is Our New Way of Life
We see that joy is connected to as we live      righteous, we grow in joy! We see GOD      HIMSELF is joy that there's joy in HIS rule.
There's joy in hearing HIM, there's joy in      repentance; there's joy in HIS shadow!!!
There's joy in HIS presence, HIS joy in the      springs of GOD! There's joy! HIS joy is our      satisfaction -- there is joy shed abroad in      our hearts by the HOLY SPIRIT.
Joy is our way of life.
...................................................................................      1 Thessalonians 5 16 joy in Nehemiah is      said to be strength, the fruit of the SPIRIT      in Galatians is joy! joy joy upon joy! ...................................................................................
This is the way of life in the Christian's life.
     Richard Raleigh writes that:
When he experienced JESUS, he says HE      became all his desire, all his joy — all his      consolation, all his strength!
So that his song was always about HIM & in HIM      all of his rest! See joy has nothing to do with      having or not having--joy has nothing to do with      being treated right or being treated wrong.
...................................................................................      Joy has nothing to do with any of these things;      it is the MAN CHRIST JESUS; it is the shadow of      the ALMIGHTY, it is the reception of the SPIRIT. ...................................................................................
Tumblr media
As I read a quote earlier that brown bread in      with the Gospel is great fair in other words      even if you have nothing—if you have the      Gospel, you have everything!
Tumblr media
And that Gospel is the glad tidings great joy!
     JESUS HIMSELF received & experienced.
Richard Raleigh goes on to describe his sense      of GOD's presence in this manner he says:
a certain sweet gift flows into the pure mind      & as if drunk with strong wine, we melt into      the pleasures of the CREATOR.
He also says this inebriated my spirit with the      burning wine of YOUR sweetest love—so that      forgetting all evils in all limited sites illusions      & images, I may exalt embracing YOU alone!!!
And I may rejoice in my GOD, my JESUS!
You see it is the Christian life experience joy as      we experience GOD, joy erupts on the inside      that we might leave the Sanhedrin rejoicing      with our backs bloodied!
Rejoicing because of the Name of the LORD!!!!
We see that choosing to drink the wine of      Heaven will make us whine for the Earth..
I remember reading Reinhard Bunkey said:
Tumblr media
Don't argue, shine & that shining is nothing      other than JESUS WHO is anointed with joy      above all HIS fellows!
Tumblr media
O a joy even in the midst of pain is probably the      greatest demonstration of GOD giving you a life      that is greater than anything that can happen to      you in this life!
Praise GOD you see the enemy is after your joy      —the lack of joy is an indication GOD no longer      is the source, but this ecstatic life..
This life of ecstasy in HIS presence comes from      a life of experiencing GOD & that is the joy that      we know! That's the highest joy that we're able      to know & I want to encourage you to live a life      rejoicing always, not just joy five days a week or      six days a week.
Tumblr media
But living in joy even in the midst of things not      going your way, or someone being mean to you      or things not happening the way you thought or      expected or things start falling down all around
Tumblr media
You grip on to CHRIST WHO is GOD's smile in the      heart—grip on to CHRIST WHO pours the SPIRIT      out without measure!
& let the SPIRIT HIMSELF fill your heart with the      love of GOD shed abroad! That great joy & love      in our hearts by HIMSELF.
I just want to encourage you this year there's probably all kinds of things going on in your life there's probably more things going to happen this year.
But this is certain, the joy of the LORD is your strength & that we can live in the shadow of the ALMIGHTY and rejoice there no matter what happens!
No matter what rain falls!
We have the pavilion of GOD ALMIGHTY & we can dance! We can dance in HIM & enjoy HIS presence!
Bless you guys!!
Joy upon joy be released upon you, wine of Heaven, Amen!

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional: October 18th
Tozer in the Morning A BELIEVING REMNANT
What is God trying to do with His believing people?-the Bible calls us a remnant according to grace, believers taken out of the great, teeming swarm of so-called religious people in today's world. I am inclined to join others in wondering if the Lord is postponing His coming because He is trying to get His Bride ready? For years it has been the popular idea in evangelical Christianity that the whole body of believers in Christ would rise like a flock of frightened birds when the Lord comes. But A.B. Simpson and William MacArthur and others in the past generation said, "Oh no! The Lord will take with Him those who are prepared and ready for His coming!" I do not presume to give an answer satisfying to everyone in our churches. But I know that many Christians are too smug about this, saying in effect: "I am converted to Christ through grace, so I can live as I please!" Of some things we cannot be dogmatic; but we know this for sure-God has no halfway house between heaven and hell where He takes us to fumigate us!
Tozer in the Evening Decisions or Disciples?
Today we need people who dare to question the status quo and say, "Wait a minute here. Where do you find this in the Bible?" The idea that all you have to do is to accept Christ and you are in is a great mistake. It leaves people with the impression that if they accept Christ they have no fight to fight, no warfare, no job to do and no temptations. They are just in. When you accept Christ rightly as your Lord and Savior you are in, but to be honest, you have just started to fight. People get converted and we do not tell them that they must fight all the way through to heaven because of the spirit of degeneration and the tendency to deteriorate. They must fight, pray through, suffer it out and live in praise and worship, because if they do not they will deteriorate. Read the history of the Christian church if you can keep your faith and keep from weeping.

sunday solice - our great opportunities
"hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, which I have reserved against the day of trouble?"  job 38:22-23
our trials are great opportunities.  too often we look on them as great obstacles.  it would be a haven of rest and an inspiration of unspeakable power if each of us would henceforth recognize every difficult situation as one of God’s chosen ways of proving to us His love and look around for the signals of His glorious manifestations; then, indeed, would every cloud become a rainbow, and every mountain a path of ascension and a scene of transfiguration.
if we will look back upon the past, many of us will find that the very time our Heavenly Father has chosen to do the kindest things for us, and given us the richest blessings, has been the time we were strained and shut in on every side.  God’s jewels are often sent us in rough packages and by dark liveried servants, but within we find the very treasures of the King’s palace and the bridegroom’s love.  — a.b. simpson
trust Him in the dark, honor Him with unwavering confidence even in the midst of mysterious dispensations, and the recompense of such faith will be like the moulting of the eagle’s plumes, which was said to give them a new lease of youth and strength.  j.r. macduff
if we could see beyond today as God can see; if all the clouds should roll away, the shadows flee; o’er present griefs we would not fret. each sorrow we would soon forget, for many joys are waiting yet for you and me.
if we could know beyond today as God doth know, why dearest treasures pass away and tears must flow; and why the darkness leads to light, why dreary paths will soon grow bright; some day life’s wrongs will be made right, faith tells us so.
if we could see, if we could know, we often say, but God in love a veil doth throw across our way; we cannot see what lies before, and so we cling to Him the more, He leads us till this life is o’er; trust and obey.
have you asked to be made like your Lord?  have you longed for the fruit of the Spirit, and have you prayed for sweetness and gentleness and love?  then fear not the stormy tempest that is at this moment sweeping through your life.  a blessing is in the storm, and there will be the rich fruitage in the 'afterward.' — henry ward beecher
the flowers live by the tears that fall from the sad face of the skies; and life would have no joys at all, were there no watery eyes.
love thou thy sorrow: grief shall bring its own excuse in after years; the rainbow! — see how fair a thing God hath built up from tears.

A.B SIMPSON
