❣️ Between Us - this sure was a surprise for me because my expectations for this show were 6 feet under lmao. I don’t like New’s series and I wasn’t a fan of winteam in uwma so I was getting ready to take a quick peek and then drop it but,,,, yeah. it’s good lmao. they’re doing an excellent job at integrating it into the uwma timeline while giving us a vast amount of nostalgic moments. It’s a surprisingly good production and I’m very impressed. The cast has had a big glowup acting-wise which is amazing to see while still getting the familiar vibes from uwma. I love it so far.

seeing some confusion over why some UK productions are still ongoing despite the strike. there are two separate screen actors' unions at play here: SAG-AFTRA, which is the american union currently striking, and Equity, its british equivalent. any UK production which signed the majority of its performers under an equity contract (i.e. house of the dragon), is still good to go. american projects filming in the UK, such as the wicked movie, are being halted.

side note: despite the similar names, Equity is a distinct organization from Actor's Equity/AEA, which is the american union which covers performers who work in theatres, theme parks, or any sort of stage. they are also currently not striking but have issued a statement in solidarity with SAG, which is their sister union.

I don't really know anything about unions/contract negotiations, but if the iatse wins and gets what they want does that mean that tim can no longer get away with late scripts/last minute changes since those seem to be one of the causes for the long shoot days? Would the iatse somehow be able to hold him accountable?

Answering the second question first. Speaking from the world of theatre here, where I've worked with AEA contracts but not IATSE (our crew is IATSE, but working with their contracts is way above my pay grade), so there could totally be significant differences... but if an organization/production violates the terms of a contract, the unionized crew member would be able submit a complaint to their rep, which would lead to a follow-up investigation. If found to have violated the terms, the production/organization would have to pay a fine to the crew members represented by the union. It can get pretty costly.

Back to your first question now: I've heard of three terms that IATSE is seeking to gain in this contract negotiation, but there may be many more: guaranteed lunch breaks (many crews don't even get one), limits on overtime so that crews are regularly working 10-ish hour days instead of the 14+ that many currently do, and an agreement that no new scenes can suddenly be added to a shooting schedule on the day of the shoot (which often causes the workdays to be extended). Now, I may be completely incorrect on those terms, but those are the things that I've heard in the few articles and things that I've seen. *If anyone knows differently, please let me know and I will edit.

LA production person here! A lot of this is accurate - the other huge thing we’re asking for are weekend minimums of which there are none for IATSE (actors do get one which…lol) and which is how certain members of crew work 7 days weeks…. plus there’s a lot of stuff about wages and health pensions but that doesn’t directly affect 911 and their crazy schedules.. Seeing 911/LS work so many fraturdays (filming Fri PM into Sat AM) breaks my heart. Direct result of late scripts - thanks Tim! 🙄

With those terms in place, Tim would find it very difficult to do last-minute script rewrites and stuff that he currently gets away with; remember how 2 scenes were added to 2x12 during the filming period? And then one of those added scenes was still cut from the episode? Yeah, that would be less likely to happen under this new contract. The new contract will mean that Hollywood will have to significantly adjust how they produce TV and movies, and that they will want to have a really solid final shooting script before filming begins, unless they want to waste time shooting unnecessary stuff and have to extend the shooting period for each episode, which will ultimately cost them more money. Or, they could continue to do what they currently do, but pay heavily for it in fines. Either way, more money.

In many ways, it's a complete overhaul of the entire industry, but that is exactly what the industry needs.
