My Thoughts on WatcherTV

Hi, I am here to put away my meme-making skills to express my genuine thoughts on Watcher’s announcement; WatcherTV. Before I get into it, this is for any of those at Team Watcher who might be seeing this message: Just know we love and support everything you do for us. Y’all truly do not get the credit you rightfully deserve. I hope with this change to a separate streaming platform you guys can create the content you want to make, pull in creators that you’ve always wanted to work with, and share voices/topics that may have not had the chance to shine because of YouTube’s heinous algorithm. I know myself, and many others, are excited to see what WatcherTV brings. For instance, I already watched Road Files and the trailer for Travel Season on the new platform. And guess what? I love it! I just love BTS-centric shows and seeing the vibes established on Travel Season. Along with more Lizzie/possibly-more-sightings-of-other-Team-Watcher-peeps content?!? If this is what holds for the future of WatcherTV- oh boy, do you already have me more on board than I already was.
I also send my sincerest regards too. We all know that the internet can be a negative space with many sharing their uncensored thoughts, and I hope none of you take the hate to heart. I also hope you can take the weekend to breathe, drink some water, spend time with loved ones, and celebrate this huge step you all are embarking on. I am truly excited to see what is to come on WatcherTV will be there with each step to support.
Now to my fellow fans of Watcher. I understand the concern and it is okay to have concerns. It shows that you truly care for Watcher as a company and don’t want anything negative to come about with this decision. BUT on the other hand, spreading hateful messages? Not. Fucking. Cool. It is quite simple to express concern in an appropriate/respectful manner. Remember, this is a company full of living and breathing human beings. Trying to justify “who is to blame” and pointing fingers is just childish. Guess what? No one is to blame, it was a company-wide decision that they all made and spent months upon months to create.
Yes, it does suck to see content that was free for years be moved to a paywall, but remember they are independent artists that have to pay employees, freelancers, locations, and themselves! Have we not been advocating for fair pay among creative individuals when it comes to WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes and then AI art taking jobs away from artists? If this is what the company needs to do to survive while not sacrificing the high-quality content they make for us, then we should give it a shot! Plus with the current discount available, the subscription is not that pricey for the amount of shows they produce! Literally for January and a bit of February, they were uploading 2 podcasts and 2 separate shows… that’s a lot of content! If you have never sat down to produce, direct, write, perform, edit, and all other aspects it takes to make a fine-polished YouTube video, it takes a lot of work!
To add to this, Watcher already makes content that far expands past what is recognized as normal for YouTube. They build individual sets for each show that is produced, and they travel all over the place for Ghost Files and soon-to-be Travel Season. It costs money to produce content and YouTube?- It’s just not how it was years and years ago. Views on long-form content have been dipping and with the over-saturation of sponsorships, I am assuming they are not making enough profit to sustain the business on the current platform. Also, monetization on YouTube has been a killer for many channels because of vulgar language issues and just being demonetized for no rhyme or reason. By moving over to a streaming platform of their own they can continue to create what they want to create, and make it without any restrictions or rules holding them back. Too pricey? Find some friends who also like the content and split the pricing evenly. Only want to watch certain shows? Then make a monthly subscription for the time that show airs. There are many solutions that you guys see as a huge problem, and don’t get me wrong I have my concerns. I shared those concerns briefly in my theory post about them still being a young channel, but I’m also unaware of the actual analytics and revenue that is currently being brought in currently to the company from YouTube alone. 
It’s a huge step that has garnered negative feedback from those spreading hateful messages about the company and to other individuals for supporting the boys *cough cough I see your messages and comments cough cough* is truly uncalled for. I will be taking a bit of a break from my socials as I wait out the storm though if I have the energy, I might stream on Twitch again and talk through this with y’all if you can sit down and have a civil discussion. As for now, it’s your choice if you continue to support. My goal is to continue to make funny little memes, and if I am allowed to I will be working on a crack video pt.2 after Travel Season premieres. Remember to be kind and to put yourselves in their shows. Just the boys even though they are receiving the brunt of the hate, but for everyone at the company.

exempt the self-employed from national insurance contributions, essentially cutting overall income taxation by a couple percent

Dorian Bautista - Militech's Bloodhound

It's a rare shot of our grumpy Filipino-American corpo boy!
Born: 2045, Night City Age: 32 Occupation: Corporate Counter-Intelligence Officer
Dorian Bautista is an Assistant Director for Internal Affairs at Militech's Night City Office. This makes him equivalent in rank to his rival, Meredith Stout. They... don't get along.
What cannot be denied is that Dorian is effective and loyal to the company. Bautista never gives up, and always gets his target. He has earned a number of nicknames and epithets.
One particularly (in)famous one is 'Durian,' a play on both his given name and the infamous Asian fruit, known for its pungent smell. The idea was that nobody wanted to be in the same room as him, much like nobody wanted to be in the same room as an open durian.
The other is 'the bloodhound,' related to his legendary drive to hunt down and capture traitors, leakers and internal security threats.
Dorian has few friends inside Militech, and he doesn't particularly care about whether or not he's liked. He has nothing to prove to other employees, only the company.
Kaylee Andersen - Along Came a Spider...

Born: 2047, NUSA Age: 30 Occupation: Corporate Netrunner
Kaylee Andersen is a netrunner. A good netrunner. She should be, considering she's been doing it since she was around 12 years old.
Much like Lucy Kushinada of Edgerunners fame, Kaylee was selected by Militech for her aptitude and taken away by the company to receive training by Militech's electronic and cyber warfare division as a netrunner. Unlike Arasaka's techniques, Militech gave a pretense of humanity, paying her parents a monthly honorarium and a 5% discount on all Militech goods and services in exchange for Kaylee. For a poor couple barely making ends meet, it was practically a godsend.
Kaylee's training was centered around defensive cyber, defending against breaches by rogue AI, pre-DataKrash demons, and, of course, Arasaka netrunners. Using data collected from prior Arasaka attacks, instructors trained their students in a brutal manner befitting Militech, leading to many of the students dying from training accidents.
Kaylee survived to graduate, due to a combination of skill and guile, and a huge helping of luck.
Being raised in a secret Militech facility and being forced to fight to survive in cyberspace, where classmates died in horrific fashion, did little to advance Kaylee's social skills, nor her mental health. But she has never entertained leaving Militech. Why? Her employment in Militech ensures that her parents are able to afford food and rent and have a little left over for incidentals.
Her only friend is a man whose single-minded dedication to his work has led to people being repulsed by him and his determination. His name is Dorian Bautista, the Bloodhound of the Night City office.

i know absolutely nothing about 40K lore but like, space marines look like if buzz lightyear was about to call me a slur.
my cursory understanding of space marine armor is that it contains a slew of user-specific tech like kinetic sensors, automatic targeting systems, thought-control interface, and even life support (including food production? please don't tell me the suit has a toilet built in) and if that's true that's a BUNCH of technological real estate that accomplishes basically putting an iron parka on a bloodthirsty jarhead with a bigass gun. tactically, it would make more sense within the technological setting of 40K to have the space marine armor piloted by an AI/drone control system, and literally cut out the middle man.
aesthetically? the chaos marines have skulls and shit and it looks metal as FUCK and i appreciate the personality. blue space marines just look like they're going to harass a subway employee for their boot boy discount.

Wearing a baseball cap and thick, black-rimmed glasses, Cameron Chell is part defense contractor, part tech executive. His company, Draganfly, used to mainly work with emergency services in North America, selling drones and the accompanying software that could deliver medical equipment, or film traffic accidents from above. But since last February, the Canadian has pivoted his business to cater to a market more than 8,000 miles away: Ukraine.
Now, there are 40 Draganfly drones in Ukraine, repurposed for search-and-rescue missions in bombed-out buildings, landmine detection, and other military tasks that Chell declines to detail. The company has demonstrated its tech to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Ministry of Defence, as well as President Volodomyr Zelenskyy’s fundraising initiative, United24. “There isn't a branch of the government we haven’t worked with or interacted with in some way.” Sometimes he gets texts from Ukrainian contacts, saying a friend of a friend needs a drone for their unit, can he help? Draganfly obliges, of course, for a discounted fee.
Since Russia invaded, military aid has been flowing into Ukraine. The US has committed $39 billion since the war started, the UK $37.3 billion, and the EU $12 billion. Chell and his company are part of a scramble of international tech companies rushing into the country to try and benefit. Business has been so good, he’s set up a field office in Ukraine with four full-time employees. But Draganfly is operating in Ukraine not just to support the cause or to collect the cash. It’s also come for the data.
The war in Ukraine presents an unprecedented opportunity for military tech companies. The scale of the fighting and the sheer number of weapons systems and high-tech sensors deployed have created a vast amount of data about how battles are fought and how people and machines behave under fire. For businesses that want to build the next generation of weapons, or train systems that will be useful in future conflicts, that is a resource of incalculable value.
“Everybody could have the same AI engine. The only differentiator now is how good are the data inputs that you have,” says Chell. “Making sure that it's your sensors collecting that data, and feeding it into your software, is absolutely important. It’s more important than ever to be present.”
There is an old, much derided, cliché that data is the “new oil”—not only because of its cash value, but because of how it will fuel so much of the future economy. Just as large language models, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, are trained on hundreds of billions of words, AI products in the defense world also have to be fed vast amounts of data. A company selling drones that can autonomously identify tanks, for example, needs to train its software on huge numbers of images: tanks covered in camouflage, tanks obscured by bushes, tanks deep in mud. It needs to be able to recognize the difference between a military tank and a civilian tractor, as well as what type of tank it’s looking at, so it knows friend from foe. For a company like Draganfly, which is selling drones with landmine-detection software, staff need to train their AI on thousands of images, so their system can tell the difference between a rock formation and a modern mine.
“Ukraine is the only place in the world where you can get that data at the moment,” says Ingvild Bode, associate professor at the Center for War Studies at the University of Southern Denmark.
Draganfly is far from the only company to have noticed the potential of Ukraine to gather data. Chell is among a wave of international AI executives traveling to and from the conflict to test and train their products. German AI company Helsing says it has staff regularly traveling to the country. Data analytics company Palantir has opened an office in Kyiv and is offering its services pro bono. “You have to ask yourself, why are they doing that?” says Bode. “There are a number of reasons, and the value of the data will absolutely be one of them.”
Some international companies working in the conflict zone are using their experiences in Ukraine to refine the products they are selling back home. Seattle-based BRINC has designed “Lemur” drones, which are designed to be able to break through windows to access buildings. In the US, they’ve been marketed to police to use in active shooter scenarios. But in Ukraine, they’re being used to help search for survivors after missile attacks, according to the company’s founder, Blake Resnick. The company recently released its Lemur 2 model, which “does utilize some feedback that we've gotten from Ukraine,” he says. The new model can make floor plans of a building as it flies around and can maintain its position in the air, even when the pilot takes their hands off the controller. These ideas might have grown out of BRINC’s work in Ukraine, but according to the company’s YouTube advert, they’re now being marketed to police forces back in the US.
The “data is the new oil” cliché might illustrate data’s value. But it also speaks to the way data can be extracted from a country without benefiting the people who live there. In the first year after the invasion, Ukraine was so welcoming to American tech companies that even startups whose pitches had been rejected at home by the Pentagon got the green light to be trialed by Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines. But that warm welcome is starting to chill, as Ukrainian government officials recognize how valuable their battlefield data would be if it remained in Ukrainian hands.
“You can’t even imagine how many foreign companies are already using Ukraine as a testing ground for their products: AI companies like Clearview, Palantir; anti-jamming systems; everything that has a software component is in Ukraine right now,” says Alex Bornyakov, Ukraine's deputy minister for digital transformation.
Ukraine is very aware of the value of its data, Bornyakov says, cautioning that companies shouldn’t expect to arrive in the country and get access to data for nothing. “This experience we’re in right now—how to manage troops, how to manage them smarter and automatically—nobody has that,” he says. “This data certainly is not for sale. It’s only available if you offer some sort of mutually beneficial cooperation.”
Instead, Ukraine wants to use the data that’s being gathered for its own defense sector. “After the war has finished, Ukraine companies will go to the market and offer solutions that probably nobody else has,” Bornyakov says.
Over the past few months, Ukraine has been talking up its ambitions to leverage its battlefield innovations to build a military-tech industry of its own.
“We want to build a very strong defense tech industry,” says Nataliia Kushnerska, project lead for Brave1, a Ukrainian state platform designed to make it easier for defense-tech companies to pitch their products to the military. The country still wants to partner and cooperate with international companies, she says, but there is a growing emphasis on homegrown solutions.
Building a domestic industry would help protect the country from future Russian aggression, Kushnerska says. And Ukrainians have a better understanding of the dynamics of the battlefield than their international counterparts. “Technologies that cost a huge amount of money, made in [overseas] laboratories, are coming to the front line, and they're not working,” she says.
Brave1—which was exclusively open to Ukrainian companies for its first two months of existence—is not the country’s only attempt to build a homegrown industry. Kushnerska describes secret tech conferences, attended by Ukrainian tech executives and Ministry of Defense officials, where discussions can take place about what the militaries need and how companies can help. In May, Ukraine’s parliament voted through a series of tax breaks for drone makers, in an attempt to encourage the industry. Those government efforts, combined with the huge demand for drones and the motivation to win the war, is creating entire new industries, says Bornyakov. He claims the country now has more than 300 companies making drones.
One of those 300 companies is AeroDrone, which started out as a crop-spraying system based in Germany. By the time of the full-scale invasion, the company’s Ukrainian founder, Yuri Pederi, had already moved back to his home country. But the war inspired him to pivot the business. Now the drones, which can carry heavy loads of up to 300 kilograms, are being used by the Ukrainian military.
“We don’t know what the military are carrying,” says Dmytro Shymkiv, a partner at the company, who used to be deputy chief of staff for Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian president who preceded Zelenskyy. He might plead ignorance to what AeroDrone drones are transporting, but the company is collecting vast amounts of data—up to 3,000 parameters—on each flight. “We are very much aware of what's going on with every piece of equipment on board,” he says, adding that information about flying while being jammed, or in different weather conditions, can be repurposed in other industries or even other conflicts.
Aerodrone offers a glimpse of the future companies Bornyakov is describing. Armed with that data, the company sees a wide range of options for its future once the war is over, both military and civilian. If you can fly in a war zone, Shymkiv says, you can fly anywhere.

Today I found out that our company offers an employee benefit where they will reimburse us for citibike (nyc bike ride share service).
Lyft acquired citibike (and several other bike share services in other major cities) and you have two annual membership options:
1. Citibike membership $205 per year
2. Lyft Pink All Access (LPAA) membership $199 per year
LPAA has same membership benefits of citibike, plus you get some lyft benefits, plus grubhub/seamless membership, plus membership to all the other major city Bike share services, plus other random benefits.
If you’re a citibike member already you can also transfer your membership to Lyft pink for free to get those benefits.
So why does LPAA cost $6 less than getting citibike membership alone?
There’s an argument that if you have a discount that you might be more likely to use a service they you wouldn’t have before. Maybe I don’t use grubhub now, but because now I get fees waived I’ll start using it (or use it more).
There’s probably truth in that, but it seems odd that they’ve only priced at $6 difference.
Someone mentioned in a Reddit thread a much more likely reason: it will greatly inflate the metrics for number of Lyft Plus members, which will look great on annual reports and make it look like they are more attractive investments.
It’s amazing to realize that these are not profitable companies: Lyft spends about $4 billion each year to make $3 billion of revenue. That’s like having a business model where I buy cans of soda for $1 each and sell them to people for $0.75 each. That’s great for the consumer but not sustainable!
The original assumption was that AI would allow for self driving cars in the ‘next 5 years’ but it seems to be looking like this is increasingly becoming less likely to happen anytime soon (at least not without killing a lot of passengers and pedestrians).
Lyft and Uber aren’t startups anymore, they are publicly traded companies but they still receive capital either by taking in debt or from PIPE (Private Investment in Public Equity) and basically they’re in bite-each-others-dicks-off type fight for a monopoly- as soon as one grids the other into dust there’s the possibility of making a profit- by janking up the prices! If you think Uber/Lyft fares are expensive now wait until you see what they’d be like when there’s no competitors!
Despite all this analysts are still saying that Uber/Lyft are great investments to buy right now (Uber technically *has* made profits in the past).
It’s so weird to be living in late-stage capitalism!
