Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
~Admin V
Hyunjin sighed in frustration, and you couldn’t really blame him. You too were frustrated with yourself.
The problem was keeping count. It was a very new concept for you, but as an experienced dancer, Hyunjin just couldn’t understand why you couldn’t grasp it.
Even warming up wasn’t regular stretching like you thought it would be. It was quick movements that followed counts. Counts never started on one. They started on five or two. And then when music was added, it was hard to keep track of the count.
You’d been in a spare dance studio since 8:00 a.m. with Hyunjin and though 11:00 was soon approaching, not a whole lot of progress had been made.
He was trying to teach you the same routine both Yeji and Changbin already knew so well, and part of you wished you’d just kept your big mouth shut and let Changbin perform with him at his audition.
He stared at you, impatiently, as you showed him the steps he’d just taught you.
“Do you know the moves?”
“Yes,” you exhaled and wiped sweat from your brow.
“Then sharpen them. It looks sloppy and careless.”
Sighing in exasperation, you let your arms swing down.
“What?” he huffed. “You thought you only needed to know the moves? This isn’t a school dance. It’s an audition. It has to be polished.”
“I’m not stupid. I know it has to be polished. But considering I’ve been a dancer for all of three hours, silly me, I assumed I could learn the moves first then work on sharpening them after.”
“We don’t have time for you to fix it later. If you know the move, do it full out.”
Gods why did Yunho have to have classes now. At least if he was here, he could give some much-needed encouragement.
With no choice but to grin and bear it, you did the moves again, stronger, tighter like he wanted. But, you also had to remember other things he’d told you throughout the morning, like not leaning back, but lifting your frame so you weren’t hunched forward, and keeping your shoulders down.
He didn’t say anything, but as his hands swept through his hair, you knew he was unhappy. He lifted his hand and motioned with his finger for you to go to him. “Come here.”
Hands on your hips you walked towards him.
“You’re thinking too much.”
You wanted to slap him. “Could it be that it’s because I’m doing and learning things I’ve never done before and I’m trying to remember everything? Counts, moves, positions my body should and shouldn’t be in?”
“Just listen to me. The steps aren’t enough. You have to feel the music.”
Maybe your head would explode from information overload and that would get you out of this mess. It felt impossible just keeping count and making sure your frame was how it should be. Not to mention actually knowing the steps, and now you had to feel the music?
Thankfully, Felix and Yunho walked in.
“How’s it going?” Yunho smiled at the two of you. His smile fell a little when he saw there was absolutely no cheer from you to be had.
Neither you nor Hyunjin said anything, which is when Felix cleared his throat.
“Hyun, we have class in about ten minutes. I was just making sure you hadn’t lost track of the time.”
He looked to the clock on the wall. “Yeah,” he mumbled. “Maybe a break would be beneficial.” He looked back to you. “Can you meet back here at 2:00?”
Did you have a choice? No one had contacted you about catering or dining hall duty, so you were free and clear. “Fine,” you grumbled back.
Hyunjin nodded to you and to Yunho, then left with Felix.
Once he was gone you screamed in annoyance and threw your hands in his direction.
Yunho’s smile was back. “Going that well?” He reached for you and loosely held onto your waist.
“How did I let myself get wrapped up in this? I agreed with him when he said I wasn’t really a choice to be his partner. And yet, here I am, like a big idiot.”
Chuckling, he pulled you into him. “You’re not a big idiot. You just have a big heart and wanted to help.” He swayed with you as he hugged you against him. “It probably doesn’t help that you’re stubborn and don’t like being told what to do, and when he said you couldn’t do it, you had to prove him wrong.”
“Well I’m proving him right,” you mumbled against his shirt. “I can’t do this, and both of us are painfully aware of it.”
“You’ll get the hang of it. No one is perfect right off the bat.” He stopped swaying. “Your energy is probably flagging. Let’s go get some food.”
You grumbled against him and hugged him tighter. You didn’t want to move.
Laughing softly, he pushed you back and lifted your chin with his fingers. “You’ll feel better with food in your system. Isn’t that what you’re always telling me?”
“Why must you be so reasonable?”
Grinning, he took your hand and led you back to the instructors’ offices. He shared pasta salad with you, and he let you eat most of it.
His next class wasn’t until 2:30, which gave you time with him before Hyunjin returned.
While the two of you were digesting lunch, he did simple stretches with you. When you felt comfortable, you showed him the moves you learned, or at least remembered.
Unlike Hyunjin, he didn’t snap at you or get irritated. Even when he knew you messed up, he was patient and asked you to try it again.
Once you were finished, instead of dictating what you did wrong and how to make it better, he came behind you and helped you move into each step. He explained the movement and how your body should feel doing it.
You felt better with him behind you, holding your hips and moving with you. It was more comfortable knowing he was there to help you if you goofed a step. After practicing with him a few times, he asked you to try it on your own. Some of your confidence deflated, but you felt like it was an improvement from the morning with just Hyunjin.
Before long it was 2:00 and Hyunjin was back in the studio. Seeing him, any confidence you’d gained dancing with Yunho left.
You asked Yunho if he’d dance with you first to show Hyunjin. He agreed, and to your surprise, you actually saw what could be considered approval on Hyunjin’s face. Nerves kicked in when you had to do it alone, but Yunho stood next to Hyunjin with a reassuring smile.
Closing your eyes, you exhaled slowly and imagined Hyunjin wasn’t about to scrutinize your every movement, but instead it was only Yunho watching you. When you opened them, you did the part of the routine you knew. There were still a few mistakes and missed timing, but overall, it was your best performance yet.
Hyunjin actually smiled and clapped Yunho on the shoulder. “Now I know how you got your reputation.”
Yunho laughed easily then looked down at his watch. He had to get to the other studio for his class. He patted Hyunjin back on his shoulder. “Go easy on her.”
You scoffed. There was zero chance of that.
The next moves you were to learn involved spinning and height changes. Hyunjin started out calmer in his instruction, seeing how you did better with Yunho’s praise rather than criticism. But once you seemed to grasp the new steps, he wanted to see everything together with music.
Overwhelmed with just how fast everything was, you easily made mistakes. Hyunjin tried to stay calm and just told you to start over and do it again. Unfortunately, you suddenly felt pressure and the blunders only increased. You were getting worse. Taking a break would be nice, but considering the long break you had while Hyunjin had class, you doubted he’d agree to it. The stress you had from the morning was now back in full swing.
Trying to keep a level head, Hyunjun decided he wanted to dance with you. Not like Yunho helping you, but he wanted to try dancing his part with you. Maybe having someone with you would help.
In the beginning of the routine, you were supposed to spin yourself ahead so you were standing in front of him. Him dancing with you and you still attempting to remember everything, you confused yourself and did the wrong move. This unfortunately left you with your leg out and Hyunjin tripped over it and fell.
“Are you trying to kill me?”
You offered to help him to his feet. “Sorry.”
“You have to concentrate! Is this your idea of fun?”
All of your frustrations came to your mouth. “Why yes, yes, it is. I’m trying to learn the same fucking routine that Changbin already knows, when I don’t know a single fucking thing about dancing. Maybe you should call him and go on a date with him after all to build some chemistry, ‘cause what I really wanna do is drop you on it.”
Hyunjin looked a little stunned. Quickly composing himself he nodded to the door. “Let’s get out of here.”
Thinking he meant you were finished for the day, when you were outside the building, you started walking towards the guest accommodations. Hyunjin grabbed your wrist so you’d follow him and led you to the parking lot. He stopped in front of a black car and motioned for you to get in.
The thought of asking where you were going arose, but after spending time with Hyunjin, he’d most likely just ignore you.
In the car, Hyunjin was searching for something, but not seeming to find it.
“What are you looking for?”
“The keys.”
“You don’t keep them on you?”
“Changbin usually just leaves them in the ignition.”
Your mouth dropped. “This isn’t your car?”
He continued his search.
“Our car is also in the lot. If you give me ten minutes, I can go get the keys from the house.”
“We’re already here.” He bent down and reached under the dashboard until he pulled out some wires.
Your mouth fell again. “Are you hotwiring the car?”
Before he could answer, the car’s engine came to life. Hyunjin glanced to you. “Buckle up.”
As he drove the car, you couldn’t help but stare at him. He noticed and looked back to you. “What?”
“You’re wild,” your voice was quiet, still in disbelief.
“What?”
“You’re wild!” you said louder, laughing a bit.
This caused him to smile and laugh, too. It was your first time seeing him like this. The sound was cute and unexpected.
Reaching for your phone, you began texting Yunho.
“What are you doing?” Hyunjin quickly glanced to you then back to the road.
“Letting Yunho know you kidnapped me, you know, since we’re in a stolen car and there’s a chance I may end up dead in a ditch somewhere.”
He rolled his eyes, his easy smile completely gone.
“So, do I get to know where we’re going?”
As suspected, he kept his eyes straight ahead and didn’t answer.
After about thirty minutes, you were thankful to arrive in front of a building. You had half been expecting him to take you to some backwater wooded area.
“Wait a sec,” he said after pulling into a parking spot. He popped the hood of the car and got out. You couldn’t really see him with the hood fully opened, but suddenly the engine died and the car was turned off. Closing the hood, he walked to your side of the car and opened the door for you.
“What did you just do?”
“Unplugged the battery.” He offered you his hand then helped you out of the car.
You wanted to ask more about his knowledge of apparently stealing cars, but you weren’t sure he’d answer. Your focus turned to the building he brought you to. A big black sign on the front read Saloon. You stopped in your tracks. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Nope.” He grabbed your elbow to keep you moving.
The atmosphere inside was a little bit like a bar, dark and dank, except for the dance area which was the littlest bit more lit up. On the floor were people line dancing.
Suddenly you felt nervous. You didn’t know any of those dances or steps. “I can’t do this.”
Hyunjin gestured to the people dancing. “Straight white men can do it. Trust me, you can, too.”
You didn’t feel reassured, and he could see it on your face.
“You’re too in your head in the studio. Dancing isn’t just about the counts and movements. It’s a feeling . . . a heartbeat.” He brought his hand to his chest and tapped two fingers against it, then mimicked heartbeat sounds.
Unconsciously, you brought your hand over your heart and did the same.
He shook his head and took your hand, placing it over his heart. He tapped his fingers against it, once again imitating heart sounds.
You followed him when he started dancing, your hand still on his heart.
After a few moments, his hand still held yours as he pulled you to the dance floor. He leaned over towards the DJ, but with the music you couldn’t hear what he said. The DJ nodded and spoke into a mic. “Cupid Shuffle.”
The crowd of dancers cheered as the music changed.
Your nerves were increasing, but Hyunjin didn’t let go of your hand.
He gave it a squeeze. “I won’t let go. Just feel the music.”
Watching the people around you, you tried moving to the music. Then Hyunjin pulled you four slow steps to the right. He then pushed you for four steps to the left.
“Kick out your feet.”
You watched him kick four times, but you didn’t do it yourself.
“Now turn to the left.” Turning the same amount as the people around you, Hyunjin let go of your hand and held onto your hips. Once again, he pulled you four steps right, then four left. You tried kicking this time, and when you turned, you took his hand in yours.
After the next round when you turned, Hyunjin spun so he was facing you. “You know the moves now, yeah?”
You nodded.
“Close your eyes. You’re not just doing the moves, you’re feeling the music, the heartbeat”
Still a bit in your head, you were worried about the moves and counts. When it was time to turn, you opened your eyes. Hyunjin was no longer next to you. As you looked around you didn’t see him, but the crowd was moving and you had to move with them. Watching a girl in front of you, you could see how she was feeling the music. She was doing the steps, but her hips swayed and arms moved to the beat.
You understood why Hyunjin wanted you to close your eyes; it was easier to be in the moment when it felt like only you were in it. Closing your eyes again, feeling confident about knowing the movements, you tried feeling the music. You let your butt shake a little more and shoulders dip. Your arms lifted in front of you moving to the flow and rhythm.
“Yas, girl, get it!” sounded behind you.
Opening your eyes, you looked to see if someone was dancing in a special way to cause that outburst.
You locked eyes with another girl, who then nodded at you. It was you she was cheering on.
Blushing, you couldn’t help but feel embarrassed and let out a nervous giggle. But somehow the laughter made it easier to dance.
You put more of yourself in the dancing until the music changed.
Panic came to you as you recognized the song from the party you carried the watermelon to.
“Wobble,” the DJ announced.
As memory served, it was a bit more complicated than Cupid Shuffle.
Hyunjin weaved his way back into the crowd and stood in front of you. “You can do this one, too. It’s also four counts, but just a few more steps.”
Nodding, you bit your lip feeling worried again. Hyunjin wouldn’t let you look like a complete fool, right?
As he watched you, he shifted his weight, moving his feet back and forth.
Heartbeat you reminded yourself. Allowing yourself to feel the music, you swayed your hips in time with Hyunjin’s motion.
Suddenly he grabbed your waist. “Jump forward.”
The two of you jumped together. “Now, shake your ass.”
The blush was back in your cheeks, but you watched him and tried to copy him.
“Jump back and shake again.”
As you jumped again, you could feel the counts following the beat of the song.
“Now we’re going to body roll to your left.”
The panic was back. He pulled slightly so your hip was angled to the left. You watched as he gyrated his pelvis. Essentially, it was humping the air.
“Same thing, right side.” You tried the body roll. It felt awkward, but Hyunjin grinned. “Good, that’s it. This next part is hard.”
Instead of giving directions, he squeezed and pulled on your waist to get you to step. The moves were quick, but you stepped right foot then left forward. He pushed so you stepped right then left back. He squeezed so you stepped forward, but you started left then right up, and left then right back.
“Now we turn.” Just like the song before, you turned to the left. “And back up four counts.”
Still standing in front of you, Hyunjin held you and helped you with the moves two more rounds. As you backed up for the third time, he reached for your chin so you’d look him in the eyes. “You feel good about the steps?”
“Yeah,” you nodded.
He nodded back and let go of you. He didn’t leave the dance floor like he did before, but stood next to you and danced with you. As you watched people around you, you saw during the body rolls some moved their arms in a rolling motion, and tried it. It was actually fun and made it easier to roll your hips.
Your arms moved on their own fruition when it came to the forward/backward steps.
As you turned, you didn’t move as Hyunjin backed up toward you, and grabbed his hips. You held onto him for the next round of dancing, easily moving in the same ways as you could feel him.
Two rounds later when you stood in front of him, he did the same of grabbing you, and you couldn’t help but laugh and feel the joy of dancing. Were you actually having fun with Hyunjin?
When the song ended, The DJ called out, “Cotton Eye Joe.”
Before new terror could set in, a smiling Hyunjin pulled you off the dance floor. He found a high-top for you to sit at while he got you both some water.
As you waited you watched the crowd of line dancers moving their feet quickly to the song. You bet Yunho would love to come here and learn all the dances.
When Hyunjin handed you the bottle you downed half of it at once.
“Thank you,” you breathed.
He smiled, sipping from his own bottle.
You couldn’t help yourself from watching him. He’d always been so stoic, serious, enigmatic. Even when he was pole-dancing with Yeji, he kept a straight face. But now he was finally showing that he had emotions.
Noticing your stare, his smile fell as he looked at you. “What?”
“I’m just surprised you are able to express feelings like joy and fun.”
His smile returned. “You thought I was just a coldhearted bastard?”
“Oh definitely.”
His mouth dropped in mock-offense. He grabbed a napkin from the table, balled it up and tossed it at you. “You weren’t supposed to agree with me.”
Your eyebrow raised. “You do realize how you’ve been in any single of our interactions? Coldhearted bastard pretty much sums it up.”
The smile fell again. He was quiet for a moment. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be. I’m just generally really focused on what I’m doing, be it dance or art, or even walking one place to another.”
“I can see that.”
“But you,” he nodded to the dance floor, “You really opened up. You had both dances by the second chorus.”
“Well it was fun when you weren’t examining every step under a microscope.”
He had no response to that.
An uncomfortable tension was building, and you didn’t want to piss him off, but you figured this would be the best mood you’d ever find him in.
“Hyunjin, if your heart is really set on doing the routine you have, I do think you should ask Changbin to be your partner. Otherwise, I think it would be better if maybe you changed the routine.”
His stern expression was back. “Why?”
“Changbin is clearly the better, more seasoned dancer who can pull off the moves. Surely it would be easier for y’all to find chemistry with each other than teaching me.”
His face fell in disappointment.
You knew speaking would bring down his mood, but you reached for his hand. “Look at how different everything just was when we were doing line dances. If the goal for this audition really is chemistry, why aren’t we at least looking at each other. We should be showing the connection. And that dance you’re making us do now doesn’t.”
His serious, grump face was back. You figured it was best to let him mull it over, so your attention went back to the dance floor.
Finally, he sighed. “I know you’re right.”
That was a shock. “You do?”
“It’s why I asked your opinion about it in the first place.”
“I don’t want to make you angry, so please don’t take this the wrong way, but how did that become the routine for chemistry in the first place?”
He brushed his fingers through his hair. “I was trying to create subtle chemistry, make it artistic. I didn’t want to blatantly throw it in their face.”
“I mean, isn’t that what they want?”
“But as an artist, I want to give them the unexpected.”
“So subtle it couldn’t be seen to the naked eye.”
He chuckled with you. “So what? You think we should be ballroom dancing? Doing the mambo?”
“I’m not the dancer, I have no idea what you should do.”
“You know if I create a whole new routine, you’re gonna have to work twice as hard, because I will, too.”
You smiled before finishing off your water. “I wouldn’t expect anything less, Captain Coldhearted.”
He gave you a playful glare.
When the two of you were cooled down, you went back to the car. You were still in awe when Hyunjin hotwired it. Would he tell you how he knew to do that if you asked?
“Can I ask you something?” It was him who asked first.
“Sure.”
He glanced between you and the road. “How did you end up with Yunho if you don’t dance? Like, how did that happen?”
You couldn’t help but smile thinking of the first time you’d met Yunho. “He got me fired from my job.”
Hyunjin looked at you with his jaw slack. “What did he do? What did you do?”
“We went to the same university. I worked in the campus library. He came in one day asking for help about a book and then didn’t stop talking to me. Even after my boss scolded him to let me get back to work, he didn’t, and since I wasn’t working, they fired me. We’ve been together ever since.”
“Let me guess, after you got fired, the only available work-study was food service.”
“Yup,” you brushed your hair behind your ear. “Can’t say it’s always enjoyable, but if you’re friendly with the chefs and managers, you can move up quickly and make money.”
His gaze fell on you for a moment. “That can’t have been your dream though, to stay in food service while Yunho dances. What did you study?”
“Economics of underdeveloped countries.”
His mouth was slack again, which made you laugh a little.
“I know. I wanted to go to the peace corps. Vastly different from the glamorous life of catering.”
There was a bit of silence for a while before Hyunjin spoke again. “I heard Yunho saying that you two are saving up to buy your own studio. How does that fit into your peace corps hopes?”
“You would know better than anyone that dance changes lives.”
The expression on his face made you chuckle, clearly confused.
“I got Yunho to volunteer at Boys and Girls Clubs and show the kids how to dance. If we open our own studio, I know how to get grants and make it a non-profit, so anyone who wants to learn or get off the streets can come in. No money needed.
“After we’re established and have some workers we can trust to keep the place open, we can take some time off to go into the peace corps together.”
“That’s actually pretty cool,” he nodded while driving.
“So,” you turned in your seat to better face him. “Do I get to ask you twenty questions now?”
His easy smile was back. “What do you want to know?”
“How did you get into dancing?”
The smile fell and he became serious once again. He didn’t answer you for a while.
Figuring you hit a sensitive topic, you turned back in your seat and looked out the window.
“I’m sure you could guess from my abilities to start cars without the key, I wasn’t always the most well-behaved kid.”
Looking back at him, he didn’t look at you, but stared straight ahead.
“A lot of the reform programs I was mandated into revolved around art; drawing, painting, writing, acting, and dance. The idea is refocusing our energy into positive, creative outlets.”
It was cool when you thought about it. Yunho was on the side of wanting to help and Hyunjin from the side of needing it.
You didn’t press him further, knowing this was a very personal topic for him.
Neither of you said anything, but there was a shift in the atmosphere between you; like you were no longer butting heads but understood each other.
Back at the campus, just like at the saloon, Hyunjin made you wait in the car as he shut off the engine, then got the door for you. The two of you walked together into the school grounds until you had to part ways.
“So, see you bright and early again, Captain?”
“Probably not.”
Your smile fell. “Why not.”
“You just convinced me to change the entire dance routine. That means I need to figure it out before I teach it to you. And since you’re not a dancer, I don’t want to start teaching you something and change my mind, and make you confused.”
“Wow. That is actually considerate and thoughtful. Who knew you had it in you?” Your grin was back.
“Anyone ever tell you, you’re a brat?”
Your smile grew, “You could still get Changbin back.”
He grinned and shook his head, then quickly became serious. “If you happen to see him, maybe don’t mention that we borrowed his car.”
Saluting him, he nodded in return and you parted ways for the night.
