On this day, 29 April 1992, following the acquittal of the police officers caught on film brutally beating Rodney King, an unarmed Black motorist, riots erupted across Los Angeles in the biggest urban revolt since the 1960s. Public anger exploded after the acquittal, which was the last in a long line of egregious, brutal, and racist practices by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Officers would openly use racial slurs over police radios, and would terrorise residents of Black and Latine neighbourhoods. Newsweek reported that the rebellion was multiracial: "Hispanics and even some whites — men, women and children — mingled with African-Americans. The mob's primary lust appeared to be for property, not blood. In a fiesta mood, looters grabbed for expensive consumer goods that had suddenly become 'free'. Better-off Black as well as white and Asian-American business people all got burned." There was widespread expropriation of goods, which many participants felt was justified. One former gang member named Will told the International Herald Tribune: "A lot of people feel that it's reparations. It's what already belongs to us." LAPD, federal law enforcement personnel, National Guard and US Army troops were brought in to suppress the rebellion. By the time it was over, more than 60 people had been killed, 10 of them by law-enforcement, and property damage was estimated at over $1 billion. Angélique Kidjo Enters A New Era With Sunlight To My Soul
youtube
Angélique Kidjo is back with the Diane Warren-penned "Sunlight To My Soul." Afrobeats producer Shizzi is also part of the collaboration, with his supply of traditional African rhythms and supporting vocals from the Soweto Gospel Choir. The video celebrates life with dancing, hugs, and plenty of smiles from Kidjo and her dancers. The international singing icon released her 15th studio album, Mother Nature, in 2021. She collaborated with young African artists on MH, including Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, and Yemi Alade. In 2023, she celebrated a four-decade career by kicking off a 40th-anniversary concert tour. Earlier this year, she debuted her new African Symphony project with arranger Derrick Hodge at the Kennedy Center.  "Sunlight In My Soul" begins a new era for Kidjo, who hails from Benin.  Kidjo is starting her next international tour on July 14th, which is also her birthday. Except for one show with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Meshell Ndegeocello will accompany her on select dates.

Mythique Rumba (Live at Muziekpublique)
Mythique Rumba set the Molière theater on fire celebrating the 1 year anniversary of the inscription of the Congolese Rumba on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. Artists of all generations performed an amazing set of rumba music with a live band of incredible quality! Exactly one year ago, on 14/12/2021, the Congolese rumba was inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. The cradle of rumba is, of course, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa) and the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), but some important pages of Congolese rumba were also written in our country. The Congolese group Mythique Rumba Congolaise International (MRCI), Mythique Rumba for short, is celebrating in the heart of Matonge and is inviting some of the most prestigious names in rumba for a first “anniversary concert”. The guests will be revealed on our website as they become available. Mythique Rumba Congolaise Internationale (MRCI) is an orchestra specialising in Congolese rumba. It is composed of talented performers, some of whom are internationally renowned. The orchestra never ceases to popularise the great classics of this mythical and danceable music that highlights the African scene and continues to conquer the world. It revives the work of such unmistakable artists as Kallé Jeff, Tabu Ley Rochereau, Franco Luambo Makiadi, Nico Kasanda, … Not forgetting those of subsequent generations: the Soki brothers, Nyboma, Pepe Kallé, Wuta Mayi, Papy-Tex and Josky. * Learn more about racist policing in the US in this book: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/products/the-end-of-policing-alex-s-vitale https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1975608825957591/?type=3

2021 AFCON poses massive challenges for host Cameroon
The Africa Cup of Nations, kicking off Sunday in Cameroon after a delay over Covid concerns, is also posing major security, political and organisational challenges for the host nation.
Some were fearing yet another postponement, with African football chief Patrice Motsepe saying late last month that the rapid spread of the Omicron variant in a country with a low vaccination rate is "an enormous challenge".
The African Football Confederation (known by its French acronym CAF) has set down draconian rules that may bar fans from entering stadiums en masse.
Spectators must be fully vaccinated and show a negative PCR test less than 72 hours before a match.
Stadium capacity is set at 60 percent though it will be increased to 80 percent when Cameroon's own "Indomitable Lions" play -- notably, in the opening match against Burkina Faso on Sunday.
Motsepe, a South Africa mining tycoon, has already acknowledged the risks presented by a proliferation of false tests.

Covid is already having an impact with Senegal delaying its departure for the tournament, after three players tested positive and tiny Gambia saying it is facing a "catastrophe" because it is not allowed to replace players hit by Covid.
Cameroon, a poor central African country of 27 million people, has officially recorded 1,840 Covid deaths from 110,000 infections, though experts warn of under-reporting.
Few people wear masks and only 2.4 percent of the population has been vaccinated in the country led for nearly four decades by strongman Paul Biya.
The authorities are also struggling with separatist gunmen in the west and jihadist raiders in the north -- and some fear militants will seize the country's turn in the sporting spotlight to launch attacks.
Security forces in the west are on high alert after armed groups sent threatening messages to teams in Group F, gathering Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania and Gambia.
The four teams are scheduled to play in the coastal town of Limbe, and their training site is Buea, a hotspot of separatist unrest.
"The threats are very serious," Blaise Chamango, head of an NGO in Buea called Human Is Right, told AFP by telephone.
'A POLITICAL TOOL'
Cameroon was chosen in 2014 to stage the African football showcase in 2019 but fell behind with preparations. Egypt stepped in at the last minute to host the event in Cameroon's place.
The 2021 tournament was postponed twice, first because of fears that torrential seasonal rains could affect the tight schedule, and then because of the Covid pandemic.
But major infrastructure projects were also at issue, with the flagship Olembe complex in the capital Yaounde still not fully completed.
Cameroon's hardline President Biya, 88, has looked to the hosting of the African football fiesta as a way to burnish his international image following his latest disputed election victory in 2018, handing him a seventh term.
Late last month, dozens of activists from the main opposition party were given prison terms of up to seven years for taking part in peaceful protests against his rule.
In Yaounde, Biya's portrait often appears besides ads for the football tournament.
"He has always used football as a political tool to rally Cameroonians and surf on their success," said Jean-Bruno Tagne, author of "The Tragedy of the Indomitable Lions."
Some in the opposition and civil society have also denounced "the indecency" of the cost of organising the cup in a country whose poverty rate has hit nearly 40 percent and a third of the population lives on less than two euros a day, according to the World Bank.
"If Cameroon wins, Cameroonians can forget everything. But if it goes badly, there will need to be scapegoats and heads will certainly roll," political scientist Stephane Akoa said.
