AfDB President to grant $1.1 million to young African farmers
Tumblr media
Ten young African agric entrepreneurs are to benefit from a grant of 1.1 million dollars to boost food production in the region. The grant which will be provided by the President of the Africa Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwunmi Adesina, in his effort to contribute to  end hunger and malnutrition in the world. According to a statement released by AfDB, the effort is also would also help to achieve lasting peace in the world. Adesina spoke during the launch of fellowship for young African agribusiness innovators by World Food Prize and World Hunger Fighters Foundation, in Des Moines, USA. The AfDB President said “together, let’s end hunger in Africa. Together, let’s end hunger in our world. “When I won the World Food Prize in 2017 and the Sunhak Peace Prize in 2019, I pledged the prize monies and a few matching donations totalling 1.1 million dollars to the creation of the World Hunger Fighters Foundation. “This young crop of hunger fighters and agric entrepreneurs will pick up the baton and in turn, do great things across the world”. He said that 10 outstanding African youths out of 1,300 applications were selected for the 2019 Borlaug-Adesina Fellowship. They are Lourena Maxwell (Mozambique), John Agboola (Nigeria), Adonai Anna (Benin) and Olufemi Adesina (Nigeria). Others are Ifeoluwa Olatayo (Nigeria), Victor Mugo (Kenya), Emmanuel Maduka (Nigeria), Marianne Enow-Tabi (Cameroon), Solomon Nimako (Ghana), and Nicholas Alifa (Nigeria). Responding, 30-year-old Olatayo said that she aspired to impact more than 200,000 smallholder farmers across Africa in three years. “My rooftop farms are based in Ibadan, Oyo State in Nigeria. We use a vertical model to plant lettuce and cucumber. “Since we were close to consumers, we were able to sell to them with fast and easy access to nutritious foods while lessening the impact of transportation on the whole agricultural value chain,” Olatayo said. The World Food Prize Foundation and the newly launched World Hunger Fighters Foundation are partnering to provide year-long fellowships for young African food innovators and entrepreneurs. The World Hunger Fighters Foundation will award annual Borlaug-Adesina Fellowships to young Africans to develop new technologies, champion public policy, and develop viable businesses in the field of agriculture. The young leaders are expected to gain experience in international agriculture research centres, including food and agribusiness companies. It would be recalled that the late Nobel peace prize laureate, Dr Norman Borlaug, whose work helped feed one billion people, used his award to set up the World Food Prize Foundation. It annually awards the prestigious World Food Prize, known as the Nobel prize for food and agriculture. Meanwhile Felix Tshisekedi, President, Democratic Republic of Congo and a guest speaker at the launch of the foundation in Des Moines, Iowa, said that agriculture can be used to restore peace in conflict areas. “Agriculture can be the source of peace in Africa. “It can create jobs and act as a stabilising factor in countries witnessing conflict. “Agriculture is helping to disarm former combatants in my country, for instance,” he added. On his part, former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, described the hunger fighters’ initiative as critical to food security in Africa. “The problem of youth unemployment, criminality, and many other related problems will be solved substantially if we take agribusiness, food security, and social security altogether,” Obasanjo said. Four Apps That Could Change Smallholder Farming, Forever.
Tumblr media
The Food and Agricultural Organisation has launched (FAO) a new project called Agricultural Services and Digital Inclusion in Rwanda. The project starts with the greenlight of four mobile farming Apps. The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources identified how farmers have a lack of access to information in the agricultural and livestock sectors.
The four mobile Apps titled ‘Cure and feed your livestock’, ‘eNtrifood’, ‘Weather and crop calendar’ and ‘AgriMarketplace’ are centered around four themes. Nutrition and agricultural market, Animal health and feed, weather and climate change adaption services.
The implementation of the Apps is estimated to make a huge difference in the agricultural landscape of Rwanda, not just for the economy, but for the smallholder farmers in the country.  Farmers are considered the backbone of Rwanda, so it’s vital for them to be equipped with the knowledge and tools to beat climate change.
According to weather patterns (provided by the Weather and crop calendar App), farmers will now be able to access information on which seeds will grow faster and better. This means that during insufficient rain season, they may be advised to grow beans or potatoes that typically take a shorter time to mature. The App will continue to recommend solutions with the help of the Rwanda Metrology Agency, ensuring all information is updated.
Farmers will be able to get information on how to treat livestock disease, by simply typing in the sickly symptoms experienced by livestock. The application will then give guides on how to treat the animal back to health. However, if symptoms are severe this specific App will link with a registered veterinarian in the farmer's area.
The Apps promise to bridge the information gap, so the farmer is not only able to nurse his animals back to health, plant the perfect seeds for his climate – but also gain value for his money. Over the years, it seems smallholder farmers have been exploited by the middleman due to inadequate information on food prices and market links. This often results in low earnings, as farmers have not been able to break even on profits.
The Agricultural Services and Digital Inclusion project doesn’t only have a fancy name to offer. Should roll out be successful, it will improve farming on a continental scale.

The moment you cross the boundary of Shiwa Ng'andu Estate in Muchinga Province you feel as if you've changed continents. It's so hard to believe that this pastoral idyll with its whitewashed cottages and rustic fences is situated in Africa! #африкабываетразной #путешествияпоафрике #путешествияпозамбии #шиванганду #travellinginafrica #aroundzambia #muchingaprovince #mpika #shiwangandu #africanfarm (at Shiwang'andu District)
