SURFIN’  ‘CUE - S - A
Every so often I’ll search Memphis barbecue images online to see what’s out there. My latest excursion found this photo, and a name I wasn’t familiar with.
Tumblr media
By the picture, it was an old Loeb’s, in one of their trademark convenience store/laundromat/barbecue shop developments of the 1960s. This one was across from Graceland, and is long gone.  So, it was off to the Central Library for another dive into the Loeb’s chain and its aftermath.    The Graceland Loeb’s (3795 Elvis Presley Boulevard) first appears in the 1974 phone book, toward the end of the Loeb’s barbecue run. It’s still a Loeb’s in the 1976 city directory, but there is also a Hickory Log on Knight Arnold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A year later, the city directory reflects the change of  the Loeb’s to Hickory Log, as Loeb’s is beginning to move out of the barbecue business.
Tumblr media
Bonnie Burnett and Steve Marion continue to be listed as the owners or managers of the Hickory Log shops through to the 1979 city directory, but Marion has branched out into a new business.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A digression: The Hickory House listed on North Graham is also an old Loeb’s, and part of the Lois Pit Bar-B-Q story that I put up here a few years back. And the Tasty Burger Inn on McLemore, just down from Stax, has also been discussed here.
Tumblr media
Alphonia Alexander, who ran the Tasty Burger Inn, later moved into a former Loeb’s on E.H. Crump. I didn’t eat any of his barbecue, but his burgers were as advertised. Last year I found a revived Tasty Burger Inn on Brooks Road.
Tumblr media
The owner said he acquired the name and recipes from Mr. Alexander. Still a tasty burger. A guy at an adjacent table said it was the second-best hamburger in the city. I asked him what the best one was, and he said it was the one he just ate. Some serious fans.      Anyway, my camera died on me in the 1979 city directory, so it’s narrative from here on out. By 1981, the EPB Hickory Log had a new manager, Kathy Burnett (don’t know if she was related to Bonnie Burnett; the city directories had no addresses listed for either Burnett or Steve Marion) and the Knight Arnold Hickory Log had morphed into the Hickory Chip. Both were gone after another year. By 1982, Steve Marion continued in the doughnut business, and had added a bar – Steve’s Place, on North White Station in a Loeb’s complex, next door to the old Loeb’s ‘cue shop at 793 N. White Station – and was also listed with Tiny’s Family Restaurant on Winchester (another Tiny’s was at 3465 Cazassa, in – yes – a former Loeb’s barbecue restaurant. Lacking any information to look for Steve Marion or Bonnie Burnett, I didn’t look past 1982.
TWO BIGS
Tumblr media
Earlier this month I finally walked the Big River Crossing, and it’s simply terrific. The distance suits me just fine, and the views are spectacular. Yes, you’ll probably have a freight train or two pass by less than 10 feet away, but it’s over soon enough. The power of the barge tow was more impressive. It passed beneath me at a deceptively fast pace.    So, having worked up an appetite, I decided to visit a new restaurant in an old ghost pit –
Tumblr media
It is one of the former Neely’s that were run by the TV Neelys, and the new owners (among them the Central BBQ folks) have done a great job transforming the place on Jefferson. It’s a night-and-day difference literally, with the front windows (actually, a garage door) letting sunlight finally come inside.
Tumblr media
The menu is varied, to say the least, with such things as breakfast tacos and an Asian rice bowl that is apparently quite popular, plus pancakes and an omelet. They also have a long list of biscuit “sammies.”    I’m pretty much a traditional breakfast person – not into breakfast sandwiches and definitely not “sammies” – and the menu serves up tradition as “the kitchen sink.” It’s one of about every option you would find on a regular breakfast menu – eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, hash browns the size of the dinner plate they come on, and a biscuit. I couldn’t finish it; the sausage and hash browns, which I never order if I don’t have to, were too much. It was OK, but I have two or three other places I like better, and for less $$. Coffee is self-serve, and good. And good for them for opening at 5 a.m.   The best part of the visit came as I crossed the parking lot to my car. I saw a guy working on the old barbecue pit,
Tumblr media
so I went over to see what was going on. Turns out, it’s pits, as I saw a second one on the back that I didn’t know was there. The pits are gas-fired.  He was cleaning them out, and didn’t know what the plans might be for them.
Tumblr media
ANOTHER YEAR
Thank you to everyone who has found this site and deemed it worthy of following. May your holiday and new year be filled with peace and joy. Two of our food traditions – Dino’s ravs and gravy and a Showboat Barbecue smoked turkey—are in the house.    Merry Christmas from the GPC home office (David Barrett, I’m still waiting to hear from you).

Overcast Burger Battle 2019 Round 11 - The Guv’nor Inn
When you enter a contest like this in multiple years, the toughest challenge has to be that of coming up with an original burger that uses as many locally-sourced ingredients as possible. The Guv’nor did a great job last year of essentially putting a Newfoundland brunch on a burger, but this year’s offering did far less to inspire me on paper.  A seasoned beef patty with Canadian back bacon and deep fried cheese curds, smothered in our house BBQ beer sauces (made with Split Rock Brewing Co. Red Rye Ale) served on a rosemary bun. OK so a slightly modified BBQ cheeseburger?
It’s not impossible to wow me with a basic burger, and the addition of cheese curds and back bacon were something of a twist at any rate. Would it be enough though?
Tumblr media
Let’s break with (recently-established) tradition and talk about that BBQ sauce to start us off. All three of us (Andrew joined me and Sarah for this burger) raved about it, and the perfect combination of smoke and sweetness it provided to what was otherwise a bacon cheeseburger with a twist. The bun was also really good; I never new a rosemary garlic homemade bun would be that tasty and hold up that well, but it did. I also really appreciated the local greens being a mixture and not just lettuce.
The patty was a bit hit or miss with us. Mine was beautifully done, giving a nice char taste without being too dry. That said it was pretty close to that point. Sarah was even further down the dry road and Andrew likened his to sand. The cheese curds were good and tasty (and unlike Gypsy Tea Room, they were recognisable as such) but the uneven distribution did hurt the overall flavour somewhat. The inconsistencies seem to be a running theme this year, as there has been something off or wrong with one of our burgers at multiple stops.
I can definitely recommend giving this one a try. The sauce alone is worth the visit. I would recommend eating in as the kettle chips do not hold up well in styrofoam, but otherwise this is a solid offering.

It has a great atmosphere and is the perfect place to get ‘the craic’ with the staff and other guests. The Eagle also has rooms if you are looking for a bed for the night.

Idaho's food scene is about so much more than potatoes.
You might not realize it, but Idaho is one of the culinary gems of the Pacific Northwest. Although the state is mainly known for its potatoes and even has an entire museum dedicated to the spud, Idaho has a lot more to offer than just starch. From Boise to Idaho Falls you'll be able check out all of the best eateries and bars that made it in our second-annual direct to the best food and drink in each state.
The state with a bed and breakfast shaped like a giant beagle boasts a farmers market with fresh fruits, vegetables, and homemade goods that covers over half a dozen blocks; Sugar Rush Cupcakery, serving ome of the best cupcakes in the region; and of course some of the best French fries not just in the area, but in America.
Here are best restaurants in Idaho Falls. And if you’re looking for lodging suggestions, read on to the end!
1. Best Airport Restaurant: Parrilla Grill (Boise Airport)
You'll not expect to appreciate tasty Mexican cooking in Idaho, but at Boise Airport, you'll be able do just that. Order fresh and grilled marinated meats and vegetables accompanied by delicious salsas, sauces, and dressings made in-house and served in steamed tortillas.
2. Best All-You-Can-Eat Deal: China Grand Buffet (Boise)
Going strong for more than 10 years, this beloved Boise institution serves all the Chinese and Japanese classics, more than 200 items in total. Along with just about every Chinese-American dish you can dream of, the restaurant also recently added a hibachi grill as well as a full-service sushi bar, which would effectively be worth the cost of admission alone: Eight bucks for lunch, and $11.25 for dinner.
3. Best Bar: Pengilly’s Saloon, (Boise)
Although it was actually opened in 1976, Pengilly’s Saloon has an early-twentieth-century theme that features pool tables, mounted animal heads, vintage wallpaper, and pool tables. Found in the Old Boise Historic District, its 114-year-old hardwood Brunswick bar serves all kinds of drinks. Tabs are rung up on a turn-of-the-century National Cash Register, adding to the old-school vibe. On most nights, there is no cover charge for the live music.
4. Best Beer: Lost Continent Double IPA, Grand Teton Brewing (Victor)
If you want hops on hops on hops, you need to try the Lost Continent by Grand Teton Brewing. With Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe and tons of Bravo hops, this beer has a strong foundation of dank tangerine and grapefruit flavors. The result could be a double IPA that's some place between an American and British brew, making this beer’s title quite appropriate.
5. Best Brunch: Fork (Boise)
“Loyal to local” is the motto at this hip farm-to-table Boise hotspot run by the husband-and-wife duo of Cameron and Amanda Lumsden. Much of the ingredients are sourced from local Boise and Northwest farmers, ranchers, bakers, producers, and cheese makers, and the end result is an brunch menu that highlights fresh ingredients from local farmers markets. Start with a trip to the Bloody Mary bar, and follow that up with a house-baked cinnamon roll, Dungeness crab scramble, braised short rib hash, local corn-crusted trout withpoached eggs and polenta, day by day tacos on local tortillas, a wide assortment of locally-sourced salads, Double R Ranch Prime ribeye sandwich, a Cuban sandwich, and a custom-ground burger.Save room for the butter cake!
6. Best Burger: Bittercreek Ale House (Boise)
This bar and restaurant has been going strong for 22 years, and has attracted legions of regulars thanks to a huge selection of craft beers and insanely delicious burgers. Just about every item on its wide-ranging menu is made with high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients, and that pertains to the burgers as well, which are made with 100 percent grass-fed, house-ground chuck and brisket and served on locally prepared potato buns. You can have yours topped with cheese or bacon (or both), or you can opt for the popular Huntsman burger, topped with English Cheddar, Stilton, pickles, lettuce, onions, bacon, and special sauce.
7. Best Chinese Restaurant: Wok-Inn Noodle House (Boise)
The owner of Wok-Inn, named Chan, has been manning the wok at this Boise institution since the day it opened in 1983. Today he’s 74 years old and is at the helm of the best Chinese restaurant in the state. The menu here is smaller than what you’ll find at most Chinese restaurants, with a smattering of spot-on interpretations of classic dishes, including made-to-order egg rolls, chow mein, fried rice, fried chicken with ginger and garlic, Mongolian chicken, and a couple of Thai-inspired curries.
8. Best Chocolate Shop: Weiser Classic Candy (Weiser)
For over a decade, Weiser Classic Candy has been making a name for itself in Idaho thanks to their irresistible chocolates. This spot is best known for its signature melt-in-your-mouth mint velvet bites, but also serve some fabulously creamy homemade ice cream.
9. Best Coffee Shop: Big City Coffee & Café (Boise)
Big City Coffee is known for their in-house baked goods, such as their Cherry Pie Scone and Pumpkin Chai Muffin. Of course, their coffee is fantastic as well; try the Bit O' Honey Latte or their iced orange coffee. The eclectic interior gives it a super cozy, local feel that makes the whole experience even more enjoyable.
10. Best Cupcakes: Sugar Rush Cupcakery (Boise)
After a decade of serving a few of the best wedding cakes within the region, Family Ties bakery birthed Sugar Rush Cupcakery in arrange to bring all the deliciousness of the huge cakes to a more reasonable portion size. Plus, it added some truly outstanding flavors! Whether you go with a safe bet such as peanut butter banana, s’mores, or rocky road or a wild variety such as spiced chai latte, pink Champagne, or even tomato soup, you’re sure to get a satisfying sugar rush. A lot of their cupcakes are made without vegetable oil as well, which is perfect for customer with soy allergies.

West Cornwall Beer Guide
Last part of our series finds us in the West of Cornwall.
While there may not be any brewery tours to do down here there certainly are enough breweries to try.
Tumblr media
Number 2 on untappds list of best English breweries is Verdant Brewery. They are currently building a new brewery but they have opened up the Seafood bar in Falmouth. Serving fresh tasty seafood (the crab toast looks amazing along with the posh fish finger sandwhich) along with 8 taps of the freshest Verdant beer. Fresh fish and fresh craft beer, what is not to like? (Try whatever is most fresh)
If you want to carry on with craft beer in Falmouth then Hand beer bar is the place to go. If real ale is more for you then The Front is where you need to go. Not far from Verdant Seafood bar and it is the Cornwall Camra pub of the year. They have around 10 ales and 4 ciders on most days.
If the sun is out in Falmouth and you want some food and drinks then head a little out of town to The Boathouse. Under the Greenbank hotel there is plenty of room so you can sit by the river.
Tumblr media
Not far from Falmouth is Ponsanooth. This small village has 3 breweries with Treens, (Try Sunbeam) Dynamite Brewing Co (Try Pioneer) and Woodmans wild ale. There is a beer cafe held each Saturday where you can drink beer and eat street food. Treens you can find around the county on draught, Dynamite in bottles in shops but Woodmans wild ales can be a little hard to find. Woodmans Wild ale are worth a try If you find them because there aren’t many beers like them. Often the ingredients are foraged while on walks around Cornwall and they donate some of their profits to wildlife charity’s.(Try Mermaids Kiss)
Tumblr media
Further down the Coast is Penzance. Head to The Star inn at Crowlas and you will find Penzance Brewing Co (Try IPA) Penzance also has Cornish Crown who do bottles and draught beers (Try Honeyfuggle)
Quick shout If you are getting the ferry to the Isles of Scilly then look out for Ales of Scilly,Britain’s most Southwest Brewery (Try Schiller)
Back to the mainland other breweries to look out for are Keltek Brewery (Try Magik), Blue Anchor Brewery (Try Spingo), Lizard ales (Try Kernow Gold), Cornish Chough (Try Serpentine), Granite Rock (Try Penryn Amber) and Coastal Brewery (Try hop monster)
We finish up our guide with a trip to St Ives. Home of St Ives brewery they have their brewhouse where you can have a beer and some light food while checking out the great views (Try Boilers)
The town has Beer and Bird which serves fried chicken and has a choice of around 100 beers. Local craft beer as well as beers from around the world (Try Pulled coq burger, the beers are always changing!)
Tumblr media
These are just ideas so let us know what beers you find and like by tagging us in and using the hashtag #cornishbeerclub
Found a bar or pub we have not mentioned? Please let us know it so we can go test it out 😉

Gay-friendly Illinois: Five Romantic LGBTQ Getaways
Illinois is home to a number of romantic, LGBTQ-friendly getaways within easy driving distance of Chicago, from kick-your-feet-up spots where you and your partner can take a breath, to hipster beer-and-bike meccas where y’all can let loose.
Galena: Vintage Shopping, Vintage Setting
Just three hours west of Chicago you’ll find Galena, a small but vibrant town known for its immaculate nineteenth-century architecture and bustling arts and shopping scene. For you antiquey gays who can’t get enough small-town charm, Galena is for you.
Plan to arrive early and check in to The Aldrich Guest House, a queer-owned five-bedroom B&B that’s hosted President Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Owners Doug and Robert have warmly arranged and decorated each room with comfy beds, high-end linens and personal touches.
The Inn at Irish Hollow is another gay-owned B&B, an aspirational place to stay. From the cozy interiors, the three-course weekend brunch, the seven-course dinners, and the lovely and welcoming gay hosts, this is one of our favorite places in Illinois.
The gorgeous Jail Hill Inn is another option. A 135-year-old, four-story brick gem of a hotel perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway. The hotel was rated the number 1 B&B in the United States on TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards.
Once you’ve dropped off your bags, head out to explore the small-town charm of Main Street, strolling hand-in-hand along the dozens of quaint shops nestled in historic, red-brick buildings. If you and your partner are looking to feather your nest, stop in at Pinder Pottery, where a small handful of local potters are spinning beautiful and functional pottery. At Common Cents Resale, old housewares and vintage furniture are restored, restyled and sold at reasonable prices.
After some light browsing, grab lunch at One Eleven Main, a farm-to-table hotspot with a seasonal menu featuring locally-sourced ingredients. But if Galena’s historic sites have you in the mood for something more traditional—or you’re trying to turn up the romance—try Fried Green Tomatoes. Despite its name, the restaurant serves up traditional Italian fare with a farmhouse chic ambience. Before you leave Main Street, pick up a bottle (or three) at Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery.
Spend the rest of your evening relaxing back at the hotel and wake up to their award-winning breakfast (with coffee brewed from a local roaster!) before heading home (or continuing on your Illinois journey!)
Galena remains one of Illinois’s top LGBTQ friendly cities, a charming, artsy, welcoming place that’s as quirky as it is inclusive.
Instafamous in Pontiac
For Route 66 fanatics, your trip begins on Michigan Ave. in Chicago and stretches for 300 miles, filled with some of most interesting and ‘grammable spots throughout the state. Somewhere in the middle of the historic highway, you’ll find Pontiac, a small town hidden gem central to American culture, literature, and industry, from the Grapes of Wrath to the Beats and Disney-Pixar’s Cars.
You’ll want to book a room in The Three Roses Bed and Breakfast, situated in a pristine Victorian in the center of town. Or, if you’re looking for something a bit more modern and chic, check out the ACRESinn LOFT—an 1,800 sq.-ft. loft overlooking downtown Pontiac. Both options are relaxing, romantic settings close to all attractions including the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame & Museum. Be sure to peek around the backside of the building where you’ll find one of Illinois’s most iconic Route 66 murals (and unofficially the state’s selfie capital!).
You can have an early breakfast at Three Roses or take a short walk to Edinger’s Filling Station, a favorite diner among locals, with a vintage Route 66 ambiance serving homemade American breakfast and brunch dishes. They’re famous for their homemade pies, so save room for a slice.
After breakfast, stroll with your better half down Main Street and pose in front of the many ‘grammable murals depicting Americana (including Coca-Cola, RCA Victor and the iconic line of Pontiac automobiles).
Beyond Pontiac, Route 66 extends down through Springfield and takes you through Alton, where Illinois meets Missouri. If you’re up for a classic American road trip, fire up your playlist and keep on truckin’ along Route 66.
Springfield: Love in the Land of Lincoln
Since this is the land of Lincoln, why not stay at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield – a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel? It has a great location right in the center of town. Breakfasts here include house-made baked goods like blueberry muffins or buttery, flaky croissants.
In the morning, stroll past the cute, gay-owned Cardologist (a little greeting card and knick-knack shop perfect for sending postcards!) before settling in for a tasty meal at Incredibly Delicious, a locally owned French Bakery and Café located in the historic Weber House near downtown Springfield, Illinois. Founded in 1995, they specialize in artisanal breads, traditional croissants, handmade pastries, specialty cakes, and desserts. Their breakfast and lunch menu changes daily and pastry selections change seasonally. Be it savory or sweet, you will find your new favorite treat behind their doors.
Afterward, head just one block north of the hotel to the Dana-Thomas House — a Frank Lloyd Wright landmark — to tour its ornate, yet still-modern-feeling halls and rooms.
Continue your architecture lovefest with a guided tour of the recently-renovated Governor’s Mansion. Built in 1855, the mansion’s renovated exterior showcases the styles of the different governor’s that called the mansion home over the years. Tours usually last just over an hour.
For even more woodworking artistry, head to Sangmon Reclaimed, where local firefighters and veterans take the wood from torn down barns and reclaim it, rework it, and reimagine it as new pieces of art, architecture, and furnishings. A fascinating look at the Midwest traditions.
Once you’re up to the gills with house envy and dreaming of a nest with your partner, take a short cab ride or a decent walk (25 minutes or so) up South 6th Street to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The library is mainly intended for researchers but the museum is a must-see for anyone, and particularly appealing to children if you’ve brought the family. Another short cab ride will take you to President Lincoln’s (and his family’s) final resting place, a monolithic, granite tomb in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
For dinner, consider the upscale American Harvest Eatery, serving up familiar dishes with twists, all artfully plated and made from fresh Illinois ingredients. If you and your partner are looking for a night cap, hit up the Station House, a queer bar and dance club spinning great tunes.
Pontiac maybe be small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in friendliness, local vibes, homecooking and history.
Urbana-Champaign: Beers, Bikes, and Beers
Millennial hipster queers will fall hard for Urbana-Champaign. Just over two hours south of Chicago, this college town is home to a variety of breweries, eateries, and arts and culture gems. Plus, there’s dockless bike sharing in the area so you’ll burn off those calories as fast as you consume them. (But, please, no drinking and biking!) Can it get more romantic than good food, delicious beer and (sober) biking?
If you’re looking for a charming, Southern feel, stay in the queer-owned Champaign Garden Inn. The Victorian Queen Anne-style mansion, surrounded by lush gardens, is a short walk (ahem, stumbling distance) from downtown Champaign, which makes it a safe bet if you’re planning to brewery hop.
Kick off your brewery crawl at the Riggs Beer Company, The Blind Pig Brewery, or Destihl Brew Works, recognized as three of the top breweries in Illinois. Wherever you go, do not skip the Sipyard, a beer garden in downtown Urbana operating out of a shipping container in the middle of an outdoor graffiti gallery.
For dinner, go big at the Black Dog Smoke & Ale House. While not romantic in the most traditional sense, nothing brings a couple closer than sharing a rack of ribs. They also have spicy southwest potato salad. Enough said.
One of Illinois’s most beloved twin cities, Urbana-Champaign is the future of the state, with a nod to the past, it’s always looking forward, whether it be art and breweries, or welcoming festivals and queer-owned hotspots.
Alton/Elsah: Charm on the Mississippi
Alton and Elsah are small-town twin cities along the Mississippi River on the Missouri border, about four-and-a-half hours south of Chicago. Their scenic, down-south feel and pace are well worth the trip on a long weekend—especially if you and your partner are looking for a respite from city life.
Nestled in the bluffs below the Great River Road, The Green Tree Inn in Elsah is a charmer, with hospitable hosts who’ve held numerous gay weddings at their property. Next door is a quaint general store stocked with incredibly hard-to-find sodas, sweets, cakes and any toiletries you might need.
Once you’re settled, drive the majestic Great River Route along the Mississippi River. It’s beautiful and relaxing—perfect for cranking some music and soaking in the views.
After your drive, ward off the afternoon sleepies with some award-winning espresso from Maeva’s Coffee, one of several community-oriented businesses in a former schoolhouse in Alton. Maybe split a piece (or heck, just get two slices) of their famous quiche while you’re there (there’s a vegetarian option, too!).
Then, for lunch, check out Weezy’s Bar & Grill for some good ol’ Route 66 kitsch. This roadside diner is a legend, and you’ll love their classic burger and fries while you snap pics of the Route 66 memorabilia that adorn the walls here.
But small towns don’t necessarily mean small nightlife. Bubby & Sissy’s is the big, gay exclamation point on Alton’s after-dark scene. The welcoming bar is known for its drag performances on weekends with special performances from the famous Shelby Right Back.
Elsah and Alton are quite the pair — so different with a shared sensibility and easy-going charm. There’s history here, but the towns also look forward, always evolving, always innovating, always welcoming.

Types of Bars and Venues. To DRINK, DANCE or RELAX
First what is a Bar?
Well a bar is just that, a bar that you can walk up to and get a drink. In the old days drinking houses or alehouses were meeting places for people to talk and try the latest batch of ale, these went on to become pubs and taverns. The word bar was just a word for the bar of metal or wood the poorer stood behind.
The word bar then stuck and any place that served beer behind a bar was called a bar.
Over the years 100’s of different types of bar concepts, styles or specialties have popped up. Some due to laws, environment and others just because someone had a crazy idea.
When you are choosing a concept and a name for your bar make sure you understand what type of venue you are creating.
Plus when you are looking for a new place to go for a drink it is good to know what you are walking into. Below we will talk about the main types of bars, the ones that stuck.
Pubs, Taverns, Inns and Hotels
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK if there is a dance floor Dance as well, some pubs and taverns have nice quite beer gardens or garden areas they could be Relax too.
Bar Advisor Venue Type – What ever is in your name. Pub, Tavern, Hotel
There are many differences with the history of these 4 types of bars, but they all generally offer the same sort of thing. They are big, clean bars with plenty of low seating area for people and families to enjoy a beer and a nice, but not overpriced meal. Most do not have seating at the bar they are designed for people to seat or stand in groups.
Pub (Public House) is normally the smallest of the 4 and normally due to the fact they did/do not have accommodation.
Bar Advisor Favourites – The Oaks Hotel, Ferry Mans Tavern and the famous Temple Bar Pub
Irish pubs
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK if there is a dance floor Dance as well
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Irish Pub, plus you could tick pub as well
Irish pubs are types of Pubs that have separated themselves from the classic pub and are now know as a place to go and party. With live music, lots of beer and good people.
Irish Pub is not your normal, family friendly pub. It gets loud, entertaining and crazy.
Bar Advisor Favourites – the famous Temple Bar Pub again, PJ O’brians, Paddy Whelans
Public Bar / Dive Bar
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK if there is a dance floor Dance as well
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Dive Bar
The simplest of them all. The classic Public Bar was a dirty place back in a day and definitely not luxurious. It was for the working man and did not have all the bells and whistles. Now dive bars have sort of taken the place of the public bar. Dive bars are know as no concept bar, just good priced drinks, simple interior, maybe some food and maybe music on weekends.
Modern Dive Bars
The modern dive bars have now become a concept/theme bar as people are building bars to fit the dive bar concept. Modern Dive Bars normally call them selves something like Jim’s Dive Bar. They are spending lots of time working on the interior to make it look well dirty.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Okay Bar , Delirium and Swan Dive
Brew houses, The New Beer House?
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Bar
With the popularity of craft brew we are seeing a movement towards a version of the old beer houses from the 1830’s. The Old beer house was just a house that sold only beer, but this was because of the laws and the time.
Now due to the popularity of craft beer we see brew houses re-enter the market. These are just small bars that just server their own brewed beer or other local craft beer. They serve food, but it will normally be more like small pub food or finger food.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Clocktower, The Brewdog chain they have bars all over.
Gastro bar
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Bar, restaurant
Gastro bars are the luxury Brew houses normally serving great food and expensive or unique beers and cocktails. These venues are more known for their food and being very good at a specific meal. Example: really good burgers,  it’s pretty much a fancy burger joint that serves beer.
Plus it’s a placewhere people will hang around after their meal and be social.
Bar Advisor Favourites – The Clock tower, L’Atelier des Artistes and Chelsea Gastropub
Hotel Bar
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK and/or Relax
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Bar, restaurant
Yep you guessed it, it is in a hotel. Hotel bars come in all shapes and sizes. Good way to figure out the price at a hotel bar is to look at who the clients are and the price of the rooms.
If they cater to business people or the elite maybe look at a different bar to get a beer. But if they are a family hotel you will probably find some good food at a inflated, but not ridiculous price. Remember if you’re staying there you will not need to pay for a cab home.
Some hotel bars have live music normally something more peaceful than EDM or heavy metal.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Gallery Bar & Cognac Room at Biltmore Hotel, Alibi Bar & Lounge at the Liberty Hotel
Sports Bar
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK and if there is a dance floor Dance
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Sports bar
Wings, burgers, beer and noise they do not fit in the RELAX category. Sports bars are for people that love and want to watch sports. There are plenty of variations out there. Some even turn into nightclubs once the game is over.
Sport attracts normally loud, social people what creates a great atmosphere. Some sports bars cater to just one type of sport and others just promote any sport. They normally serve basic, not the healthiest, but tasty food.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Our favorite chain is Duffys, Trademark, Deuce’s and Diamond
Specialty Bars / concept bars
Bar Advisor Category – Drink, dance or relax depends on your bar, most will probably fit in Drink.
Bar Advisor Venue Type – We have a couple of different options or if not there just choose other
These are bars that are based around a specialty like Cigar bar, Martini Bar and now the modern type of specialty bar the boozy ice cream bar. You can pretty much have any type of specialty bar you want if you like Margaritas you can have a margarita bar. The main thing about the specialty bar is you need to be good at your specialty. If you make horrible margaritas and your margarita bar that’s not very special.
You also might find the specialty is more of a theme or concept. They might love the aliens movie and build a bar around that.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Typsy Scoop, H.R Giger
Lounge bars / Cocktail bars
Bar Advisor Category – Drink and/or Relax
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Cocktail lounge or just lounge
The historic lounge bars/cocktail bars were very different to the modern day. Now they are normally thought of as the same thing,  they are places that are quiet and relaxing.
They are places where you would take a date or go for cocktails with the girls. They are normally more expensive and their food options are unique.
Some venues are confusing the lounge part and adding lounge to their name just because they well have lounges. Nightclubs do this a lot. We do not agree with this as is makes it confusing for everyone, but hey what can we do.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Cabana Bar, Redquare rooftop, Manly Wine
Nightclubs
Bar Advisor Category – DANCE only
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Nightclub and/ or Danceclub
Well, I think everyone knows what a nightclub it. If not it is a club that is open at night. Nightclubs are normally just places to go and dance to music. Normally EDM (electronic Dance Music) or something played by a Dj.
They have loud music and open from 10pm – late most nightclubs are only open Thursday – Saturday, but some are open all week. Nightclub can loose their following very quickly if they do not stay current.
A good nightclub is classy and clean and most importantly good clubs only use top/current DJ’s.
One thing to watch out for is that in Europe strip clubs/ brothels  are called nightclubs as well. Which can be confusing when you have had a few.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Tao Las Vegas, Infusion Lounge, Love Nightclub
Day clubs / Pool Bars And Beach Bars
Bar Advisor Category – Most Clubs will fit into all categories and other will just be RELAX
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Beach bar, beachclub, dayclub what ever suits
Day clubs are the same as a nightclub, but open during the day.
Day clubs are normally at beaches or poolside locations. They have DJ’s and music all day long. Some day clubs are only clubs on the weekend. In the week they are pool bars or spa’s just places that you can relax and have a cocktail.
Beach bars may not have the DJ’s but they still have the view and the drinks. Once again lots of beach bars turn into day clubs
Bar Advisor Favourites – Nikki Beach, Moseley Beach Club, The Cove
Live Music Venue
Bar Advisor Category – DANCE
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Live Music
Live music venues focus on music. Do not go there to drink or eat, but go there for the band you like.
Some music venues allow underage and have a separate bar for people that want a drink. The bars at live music venues are not the center of the venue, the bar is tucked in a corner away from the dance floor. Live music venues will normally have a night when Dj’s play, but most nights it will be bands or singers.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Oxford Art Gallery, Black Bear Lodge,
College Bar
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK and if there is a dance floor the Dance
Bar Advisor Venue Type – College bar
These are normal bars that target college kids, they are normally a bit childish with games and pop music.
You will find them where the college is. The college bar does not normally have any history or story it is just there to keep college kids happy and spending money. If you are after a good happy hour check them out.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Potbellys, Wild Onion
Beer Gardens and Garden Bars.
Bar Advisor Category – DRINK or RELAX depends on your patrons
Bar Advisor Venue Type – Beer Garden
Beer gardens have been around forever.
The beer garden is just an outside area where you can have a beer when the weather is good. These are normally attached to pubs and taverns.
Garden bars are a little different sometimes seasonal, but they are bars that are in gardens, normally there is no big building supporting the bar. They normally just have a small booth or van, when the weather is bad they are closed. Garden bars have unique feeling and normally are for a more relaxed cocktail, while enjoying your surrounds.
Bar Advisor Favourites – Alma Tavern, Truck Yard, The Oaks Hotel
What is in a name
In the end these names and styles really mean nothing, unless you agree to the definition.
These are our definitions and understanding of the titles. If you see it differently it might be because they are called different things in your area. Please let us know in the comments below.
A bar owner can name their bar whatever they want, using whatever label they want.
If a person wants to open a sports bar called Johns Dance Club. Or if Jill wants to open a nightclub called The Cocktail Garden they can and they will probably loose business because of this. If you confuse your market before they get in they might be disappointed. Want to find the perfect name for you bar? Click Here
These terms are just a guide to what you want to do and what to look for.
Hope this classification helped,  let us know in the comments below. Visit Bar Advisor to find bars and nightclubs.
