It’s so right that it goes wrong.
Tumblr media
In The Play That Goes Wrong at the Pieter Toerien Theatre, everything that can go wrong, does go wrong, and it’s so funny to watch.
We all know the old adage: The show must go on. Well, the new production at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino, The Play That Goes Wrong, takes that sentiment to a whole new level.
Written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, The Play That Goes Wrong, tells the tale of the fated production of “Murder at Haversham Manor” by the Northriding Polytechnic Drama Society. Director Chris, played by Russel Savadier, has put together a marvellous play, in his opinion anyway, and cast it with the best actors he has available. From the moment the production starts what can go wrong, does go wrong, which includes doors not opening, portions of the stage falling apart, actors ending up unconscious and with some serious concussions, I’m sure, a mishap with the drinks on stage, and a stage hand with serious delusions of grandeur. It’s a tour de force of every director’s worst nightmares, but, as the adage attests to, the show does, indeed, go on, regardless of the mayhem happening around them.
This is one of the funniest plays I’ve ever seen. Literally from the moment the curtain opens and Jonathan, who is playing Charles Haversham in the play, played by Theo Landey, is found lying dead on the couch in the middle of the stage, it had me in stitches, gasping for breath. Director Alan Committie knows all there is to know about comic timing, and it shows in his masterful crafting of this dry British madhouse. Comedy is incredibly hard to perform, especially on stage where you only get one take to get the joke right, but each and every one of the performers on the stage does a remarkable job of working well together, and with their props, to get the most out of each and every joke.
Tumblr media
Every actor does a great job with their roles. Landey’s cadaver, which keeps coming back to life. Savadier’s detective, who is trying to control things as the director, but slowly losing hope that the show might turn out okay. Robert Fridjhon’s overbearing soon to be brother-in-law, who spends a large amount of the play suspended from a falling balcony. Roberto Pompo’s butler, who has his script written up and down his arms, even though he can’t read half the words. Nicole Franco’s incredibly overacting fiancé who spends most of the time unconscious. Sive Gubangxa’s stage hand, who ends up on the stage, and enjoying it a little too much. Louis Viljoen’s other stage hand, who would rather text or listen to his Duran Duran Cd then actually do his work. They all do marvellous jobs in bringing these characters to life, but the star of show, for me, is Craig Jackson. He has, for me at least, the best character in the production. That guy that really cannot act, but just loves to be up on the stage, possibly a little too much. He is seriously funny and has a lot of the best comic moments in the show, especially his dance-a-long monologues that had the audience in complete stitches. Not to mention the dog that they couldn’t find.
The stage is also wonderful, becoming as much a part of the comedy as the actors themselves. I marvelled as things fell off the wall, then stayed on, just to fall again on que. The lift that blows up, twice. The balcony that collapses, on que, in the middle of the production, with three actors on it. It all lends to the comedy lines that the actors are performing, and really tickles the funny bone.
This play might not be for everyone, but if you’re are a fan of dry British humour, ala Monty Python, or a fan of comic greats like Charlie Chaplin, then you will find this play incredibly funny. The only problem is that you might not find out who actually killed Charles Haversham, because you’ll be laughing so much you might miss it.

Flip chart shenanigans and other Committie-isms
"Flip chart shenanigans and other Committie-isms", a review of 'Fast and (reasonably) Furious', with Alan Committie at Montecasino.
JUST me and my bike, Alan Committie in Fast and (Reasonably) Furious at the Pieter Toerien Theatre, Montecasino, until 3 March 2024. WHEN YOU HAVE the chutzpah to vroom, as fast as your thighs can push onto a largish stage to a live audience, mounted on a Checkers bike made for a toddler, you know that you will have your audience’s attention from the get-go. This is Alan Committie in his latest…

Laugh-A-Minute: Kings & Queens of Comedy announces biggest line-up yet
Kings & Queens of Comedy – Durban 9 February 2018 – Pretoria 10 February 2018
One of South Africa’s longest running flagship comedy brands, Kings & Queens of Comedy, is bringing its biggest line-up in six years.
Bringing world-class comedy to Pretoria, this comedy extravaganza sees comic giants from around South Africa entertaining audiences at the Sun Arena Time Square, Menlyn (the first comedic event at the venue) on Saturday, February 10th, 2018.
Shining their comical armour and sharpening their witty swords, the stellar line-up includes Riaad Moosa (MC), Alan Committie, Casper de Vries, Donovan Goliath, Gilli Apter, Hannes Brummer, Jason Goliath, Joey Rasdien, Khanyisa Bunu, Krijay Govender, Leeanda Reddy, Marc Lottering, Melt Sieberhagen, Shimmy Isaacs and Sifiso Nene, with a guest appearance by Morgan Beatbox.
“We pride ourselves on bringing world-class South African comedians to stages around the country.  You are getting a massive line-up of headliner comedians from start to finish.  We’ve picked the cream of the crop and we’re excited to bring an even bigger and better Kings & Queens of Comedy for the first time to the Sun Arena in 2018,” comments Osman Osman, MD of Blu Blood.
Introducing the stars…
Riaad Moosa returns to centre stage as the host of this royal affair.  He certainly seems to have the remedy for the nation’s ills – a healthy dose of laughter, straight up – hold the aspirin – as he gives the audience a snapshot into his life, a father of three kids, husband, comedian, actor and with all the current cultural and political issues thrown in.
Alan Committie
No end to his talents, Alan Committie, is one of South Africa’s leading award-winning stand-up comic performers.  He has travelled all over the globe sharing his hilarious brand of madness.
Casper de Vries has been at the forefront of the Afrikaans comedy scene for over 30 years and has developed a strong following with his witty, razor sharp humour and hilarious observations on everyday life.
Bringing a lot of character and energy to the stage, Donovan Goliath’s lively manner of storytelling has made him a prolific stand-up act who is set to get the laughs rolling in.
Gilli Apter (pronounced with a hard G), has worked as a comedy writer since 2005.  She has entertained audiences around the country with her unique style.
Hannes Brummer’s comedic style is highly energetic and physical as he goes on about his Afrikaans heritage, the battle of the sexes and becoming a dad.
Jason Goliath
Jason Goliath is larger than life (it’s all because his big personality won’t fit into a smaller body).  His infectious energy and laugh has made him one of South Africa’s most sought after comedians.
Joey Rasdien doesn’t need much of an introduction.  Instantly recognisable, his endearing stage person is intellectually absurd, physically hysterical and thought provoking.
Teacher-turned-comedienne, Khanyisa Bunu is a fan favourite.  She was the first woman to win the audience choice award at the Comics’ Choice Awards and has also made her mark on South African TV with roles in various series.
The beautiful Krijay Govender is a South African actress, director and comedienne.  She is a rare mix of brains, beauty and a comic genius on stage.
Leeanda Reddy is not only beautiful but she has a bevy of talents.  A familiar face on South African stages and screens, she has proved time and time again that she has a flair for comedy with her outrageously funny skits.
There’s no missing that trademark ‘fro’…  Hailing from Cape Town, Marc Lottering is one of South Africa’s top comedians and has been in the comedy industry for almost 20 years.  Marc is the consummate storyteller and continues to keep audiences in stitches across the country and abroad.
Melt Sieberhagen has a uniquely South African point of view and an inherent inability to sidestep touchy topics and ‘holy cows’.  Having been described as anything from ‘a slightly angry teddy” to a “really funny Dutchman”, he’s just a normal bloke looking at the funny side of living in a dysfunctional society.
Shimmy Isaacs
The hilarious award-winning Shimmy Isaacs looks at her journey as a confused coloured woman who comes into contact with all sorts of cultural dilemmas of her own race and others.
Off stage, Sifiso Nene is a man of few words,  On stage, however, telling jokes is the only place he feels completely at home.  His passion and determination, sprinkled with talent has seen him winning awards and winning the hearts of comedy fans around the country.
Always adding a spin to the Kings & Queens of Comedy events,  international celebrity beatboxer, Morgan Beatbox, makes a guest appearance.
Don’t miss the Kings & Queens of Comedy, 10 February, 2018 at the Sun Arena Time Square, Menlyn, Pretoria.  Tickets from R200 and are available through Computicket online and the various retail outlets.  The show starts at 20h00 and is rated PG16.
Another hilarious production brought to you by Blu Blood in association with Comedy Central Africa.
Follow Blu Blood (@BluBloodSA) or visit www.blublood.com for more information.

You, me; your wife, my husband
"You, me; your wife, my husband", a review of 'Same Time Next Year', at Pieter Toerien Theatre, Montecasino, until 8 October.
THE morning after: Doris (Sharon Spiegel-Wagner) and George (Alan Committie) in Same Time Next Year in the hotel room, replete with crooked painting, pouffe and corduroy, in 1970s style. Is it about the people you found yourself…

Alan Committie zooms back in Planet Mirth
Funnyman Alan Committie returns to Montecasino in the new year with his latest stand-up show, Planet Mirth, a funny look at everything … in HD!
Alan Committie in Planet Mirth
In this, his 20th one-man comedy show, Committie presents a docu-comedy in the highest definition and promises everything we have come to love about his brand of comic madness … infectious energy, physical hi-jinx combined with witty wordplay and hysterical observations. The show runs at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from 19 January to 25 February.
Planet Mirth is a comic look at … well … everything. Our planet has never been in a more precarious state and that makes it ripe for Committie to unpack how we got here, where we are and how the heck we are ever going to move forward.
Using stand up, characters and sketches, Committie will attempt to hysterically navigate through history, geography, science and even sport, but mostly it will make you look at the world around you and laugh till you cry. And then we will collect those tears and you can use them to water your parched gardens!
It’s a pleasure.
Our obsession with hiking, the science of sign language, the craziness of family gatherings, gallons of garnish and confusing astrology are just some of the topics he may (or may not talk about). I have no control over this fella. I simply write the media release…
There’s even a sketch exploring what it must be like to be a certain president’s therapist. It’ll trump all that goes before it.
It’s the perfect new year tonic to another mad year on this planet. Book now. Planet Mirth – comedy on a global scale!

Music, comedy take centre stage at National Arts Fest
A Midsummer Nights Dream The Ballet – Mahlatse Sachaneas Oberon with his fairies.
Arts and entertainment lovers should keep their eyes peeled for a series of early booking opportunities for this year’s National Arts Festival.
For the first time, popular shows will enjoy a limited release ahead of the 9 May online box office opening and full programme reveal. This will allow festival-goers a chance to secure some top shows and start shaping their Festival experience. Details will be released on social media.
National Arts Festival
To date the Festival’s main programme has been announced and fans are currently digesting numerous reasons to make 2017 a big Festival year.
SERIOUS ABOUT COMEDY The National Arts Festival is tearing up the comedy stage this year, starting with international comedian Stephen K Amos on the opening weekend. The globe-trotting laughter master will perform his new show WORLD FAMOUS on 2 & 3 July only. Tickets are now available so fans should grab them while they’re hot.
Together with the Brighton Fringe, the National Arts Festival has brought IT’S ONLY BIRDS to the 2017 Festival; Louise Reay’s trail-blazing language experiment in non-verbal communication. “You’ll understand it but won’t know why”, says Chinese-speaking Reay, who was recently won awards in Brighton and at other World Fringe Alliance events in Adelaide and Edinburgh.
Home-grown talents John van de Ruit (Spud) and Ben Voss (Beauty Ramapelepele) are reunited for a savagely funny look at all that is wrong with the ‘Rainbow Nation’ in MAMBA REPUBLIC. Topics such as fees must fall, state capture, online dating, the economy, sport, technology, casual racism, an alternative national anthem, and even the most unusual football match in living memory, are given the once over by the duo. Succeeding its predecessors Green Mamba (2002) and Black Mamba (2005), the show will run from 2-8 July.
Trailing endless accolades and endorsements from international festivals– including the Brighton and Cape Town Fringe 2016, the UK’s The Pretend Men will present POLICE COPS; an action-packed hour of adrenaline-fueled physical comedy, cinematic style and uncompromising facial hair. Runs daily throughout the Festival.
There’s also the return of the ever popular VERY BIG COMEDY SHOW (5 July), a one-night only comedy gala evening, produced and emcee’d by Rob van Vuuren. This year’s show will include Loyiso Gola, Tats Nkonzo, Mojak Lehoko, Alan Committie, Louise Reay, Nik Rabinowitz and Virgil Prins. Expect to see plenty more exciting comedy reveals and familiar names as the Fringe programme goes online.
MUSICAL GENIUS LIVE It’s an exciting year for music on the Festival’s Main stages as Featured Artist, Neo Muyanga, leads the charge through a programme filled with tradition, innovation and experimentation.
Muyanga’s solo work, Solid(T)Ary Work, promises a survey of the tradition of protest song in the global south: moving swiftly between the chanted chorales of Soweto and Salvador to the laments around the squares of Tahrir and Meskel, the presentation is a musical contemplation of modes of resistance in a world hit by flux. Muyanga will also present a collection of songs and music through a trio comprised of Andre Swartz, Peter Ndlala and Eastern Cape-born artist Msaki.
Msaki, recently nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA), also performs with her band the Golden Circle in PLATINUMb HEART, an exploration of trauma and its ability to ossify, alienate and elude one into thinking one is coping. “The heart merely becomes numb as we move on to the next #trending issue without a chance to mourn or the time to heal,” says Msaki.
THE STANDARD BANK YOUNG ARTIST FOR MUSIC in 2017, Abel Selaocoe, celebrates a much-anticipated return visit to South Africa after an extended time spent playing on top international stages. Abel’s Festival offering will explore the virtuosity of the cello and his diverse musicianship ranging from Debussy’s poetic and vivid Cello Sonata to James Macmillan’s spiritual reflective music – ending with foot stomping klezmer and African style inspired pieces. Catch him on the 5 & 6 July only.
Off the back of the release of their debut number 1 charting collaboration, Kahn Morbee and Karen Zoid will present one concert only (3 July) of WE COULD BE DIVINE their new collaboration and a song writing process Kahn describes as “organic and effortless”. Festival audiences are well advised to book now for what is sure to be an early sell-out show.
Another Festival favourite is the GALA CONCERT; taking place on the closing weekend of the Festival this year (8 July) it will feature the Cape Town Philharmonic, conducted by Richard Cock, with soloists Abel Selaocoe (cello) and Luis Magalhães (piano).
Double platinum selling a cappella group The Soil will present two concerts on 30 June and 1 July. Defined as ‘Kasi Soul’, their music is a blend of contemporary township style and an eclectic mix of urban contemporary, fusing beat box and soul. This show has been opened for limited bookings, visit the box office to check availability.
RAGTIME PLUS (1&2 July) is an informative and highly accessible programme about ragtime music. Presented in France and Switzerland to great audience and critical response, it’s an ongoing and ever-evolving project, which changes as creator Liza Joubert finds different pieces and new information to present to different audiences.
The debut production by the award-winning Charl du Plessis Trio, BAROQUESWING, returns from sold out tours in Europe and the Far-East, to perform in a series of Grahamstown concerts with famous melodies from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Bach’s Air on a G String and Musette and Minuet from Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena, amongst others (29 and 30 June).
THE CHILDREN’S CONCERT is a great way to introduce children to music and the orchestra with a relaxed and interactive concert of popular classics and South African favourites – children can meet the musicians in the National Youth Wind Orchestra, and a few familiar (or unfamiliar) instruments. Catch it on the 7 July.
Another inspiration to children – and adults – everywhere is Pendo Masote, a 13-year-old violinist who will play with a small string ensemble. Born into a richly musical environment, Pendo is proof that classical music has a bright future. See him perform on 29 and 30 June and 1 July.
Jimmy Nevis whose hit songs include Elephant Shoes, Heart Boxing, Balloon, 7764, Misscato, All About It, and his breakout new single Don’t Wanna Fight will perform on 30 June only.
A journey through time and place, exploring new genres for the violin such as film and gaming music, is how Naomi Tagg describes NEOLEKTRA. “I wanted to break away from classical ideas of the violin and to present it in a light that was accessible to many more listeners than just the classical world,” says Tagg. Made up of 5 string players, a DJ/synthesist and a percussionist audiences can expect a dramatic show, that pushes boundaries, and disrupts our ideas of where instruments traditionally fit in. Two concerts only on 3 & 4 July.
Together with the Standard Bank Jazz Festival, the National Arts Festival 2017 presents Desmond and the Tutus and Opposite the Other in a Double Bill. Desmond and the Tutu’s have been touring their infectious shape-shifting brand of kwela-indie-punk for just on ten years. The band’s latest album Enjoy Yourself won the SAMA for Best Rock Album in 2016. Other highlights on the Jazz stage include Judith Sephuma, James Morrison Quintet (Austraila) Estafest (Netherlands), Michael Pipoquinha (Brazil), Marcus Wyatt’s BOMB SHELTER BEAST, Africa Mkhize and Kyle Shepherd among others.
While front man Sam Burger has, over the past years, established a solid YouTube following with over 200,000 hits, the band Opposite the Other was only founded in late 2015. Since then their star has risen fast. Their performance at Rocking the Daisies 2016 saw them voted one of the Top 20 acts at the festival and their first single Ride Away organically reached the Top 10 on the Spotify Global Viral 50 Chart (peaking at #8). Notably it also made its way into the Top 10 in the US and Top 5 in both Australia and New Zealand.
The double bill with Opposite the Other is on 29 June, whilst Desmond and the Tutus play their own gig on 30 June.
Early bird shows now open for booking can be found at https://www.nationalartsfestival.co.za/events/

Tune in to Saturday’s Role With Reno: O Rolos Tou Savattou Me Ton Reno, Saturday mornings on The New Pan Hellenic Voice – Greek Community Radio 1422MW from 8am to 11am
On Saturday morning’s edition of Saturday’s Role With Reno, host Renos Spanoudes interviewed Alan Committie about The Play That Goes Wrong.
Alan Committie
The Play That Goes Wrong
The Play That Goes Wrong – described by Pieter Toerin as the funniest play ever, is currently on stage at Pieter Toerin’s Montecasino Theatre Studio, directed by comic actor Alan Committie.
When the accident prone, inept Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society receives an unexpected financial legacy, the amateur group decides to put the windfall to good use. But when they attempt to put on a complicated 1920’s murder mystery play, all hell lets loose. Everything that can possibly go wrong does so, to hilarious effect, and audiences find the resulting chaos so funny that the entire theatre ends up in complete, total, happy disarray, night after night.
