1917 10 The golden triumvirate - Russell Smith
repost better resolution
Among the German Jastas, one of the highest scoring was Jasta 5, with over 250 victories to its credit. Three of its most notable pilots – Ltn d R Fritz Rumey, Ltn d R Josef Mai and Ltn d R Otto Könnecke – gained such a notable reputation that they acquired the nickname “The Golden Triumvirate.” Between them, these three non-commissioned officers scored 110 victories by the war’s end. Like all other German Jastas, Jasta 5 was based at several different aerodromes during the war. However, the unit is usually associated with with the Boistrancourt aerodrome, shown here. Boistrancourt was notable in that it was one of the only German Aerodromes to have hard, fixed hangars rather than the canvas tent hangars which were normally utilized. Behind the aerodrome was a chateau and a sugar refinery which added to its distinctive look.Pictured from front to back are: Ltn d R Josef Mai, 30 victories; Ltn d R Otto Könnecke, 35 victories; Ltn d R Fritz Rumey, 45 victories.

Albatros Dv-a, Germany WW I.
In both wars ingenious dazzle painting schemes were tested. Their success was never proved. WAK, 1/33rd, built by Zenon Krol.

Historical note: As weird as it might seem, the plane in the foreground  with the dragon insignia is historical, Albatros DV of  Oberleutnant Richard Flashar, commander of Jasta 5

1917 10 Triple threat - Russell Smith
As the sun peaks above the horizon, a trio of German Albatrosses patrol the skies in search of enemy aircraft. These pilots and aircraft are assigned to Jasta 76b, a Bavarian unit based in the Vosges region of France. The unit markings consisted of white spinners followed by white and bavarian blue rings. The horizontal stabilizers were Bavarian blue with white stripes one each side.
In the lead we see the Albatros DVa of Lt. Hans Böhning. Böhning began his flying career with Feldflieger Abteilung 290, but eventually found himself assigned to Jasta 76b in late 1917 where he would score his fifth kill. In addition to the unit markings , the front half of this particular Albatros was varnished wood while the rear half featured the white and blue Bavarian checkerboard pattern. A narrow black band separated the two sections. Böhning ended the war with 16 victories to his credit.
Next in the lineup is Vzfw. Siegfried Walther. Walther’s Albatros DVa carried the standard unit markings, but the fuselage was painted entirely red and marked with a white “W”.
Last in the lineup we see Lt. Walter Boening. Boening assumed command of Jasta 76b in October 1917. Here he flies a baby blue Albatros DVa marked with the standard unit markings. This aircraft also carried a white and bavarian blue band around the center of the fuselage. In May of 1918 Boening severely wounded below the left knee during and aerial combat with 70Sq RAF. Although he safely landed his crippled aircraft, his wartime career had come to and end. He ended the war as a 17-victory ace, having earned the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class, the Military Merit Order, and the Kight’s Cross, among others.

Albatros DV - in various versions (of which this a late model, probably dating the photo to late 1917 or beyond) the Albatros served from autumn 1916 till the end of the war - an exceptionally long period of front line use given the rapid pace of development in WW1.

Blue Max GDW box art
This is the illustration for the tabletop wargame from Games Designer Workshop. Unfortunately the German Albatros was modelled on a replica with an inaccurate paint scheme, it looks good, but the original, the Albatros DV of von Hippel, Jasta 5, was even more colorful, with a green tail and red lightning bolt on the fuselage, instead of black.
Also, there’s no such a gorgeous castle anywhere in France or Belgium, I recall it’s a castle somewhere in Spain, but not sure wich
