BJP Prioritizes Ideology Over National Interest: Opposition Reacts to Lifting Ban on Government Employees in RSS
The recent central government order lifting the long-standing ban on government employees participating in RSS activities has ignited a political firestorm. Ahead of the Budget Session of the Lok Sabha, this move has been met with sharp criticism from opposition parties, while the RSS and BJP have staunchly defended it.
Tumblr media
The Controversial Order
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pension issued an order lifting the ban on government employees engaging in RSS activities. This ban, initially imposed in 1966, was deemed “unconstitutional” by the RSS and BJP, who argue that it should never have been implemented.
Silence from Allies
Allies such as the Janata Dal (United) and Rashtriya Lok Dal have remained silent on the matter. JD(U) national spokesperson K C Tyagi refused to comment, while RLD national spokesperson Mohammad Islam indicated he would discuss the issue within the party before making any statements.
Opposition’s Outcry
The opposition, however, has not held back. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh took to social media to highlight the order, pointing out the historical context of the ban, which was reinforced in 1966 despite assurances from the RSS after Gandhi’s assassination. Ramesh criticized the government, noting the recent strain in relations between the Modi administration and the RSS.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the order, stating it threatens India’s integrity and unity. He emphasized that the RSS has historically refused to accept the Constitution, national flag, and national anthem, making it incompatible with civil service duties.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi expressed concerns about the potential bias in government agencies, stating that the order allows officials to overtly display their RSS affiliations. She criticized the BJP for prioritizing ideological interests over national interests.
Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien voiced his disappointment, while BSP president Mayawati accused the government of appeasing the RSS for political gains, calling the order politically motivated and against national interests.
Defending the Decision
In contrast, the RSS and BJP defended the lifting of the ban. RSS publicity in-charge Sunil Ambekar argued that the Sangh has been a constructive force in nation-building and disaster response, making the ban unjustified. He claimed that the decision strengthens India’s democratic system.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya echoed these sentiments, calling the original 1966 ban unconstitutional. He highlighted the historical context of the ban following a massive anti-cow-slaughter protest and noted that even Indira Gandhi had considered lifting the ban in 1977 for political support.
Conclusion
As the debate rages on, the central government’s decision to lift the ban on government employees participating in RSS activities continues to polarize political opinions. While the RSS and BJP see it as a correction of historical wrongs, the opposition views it as a dangerous blending of state and ideology that undermines national interests.

BJP responds to the reappointment of Sam Pitodra as the Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress
On Wednesday, Congress party reinstated Sam Pitodra as the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress which got a strong strike from the Bhartiya Janta Party. The latter claimed that the entire process of removing and then reinstating Sam was just a political gimmick to fuel the elections.
BJP IT cell Amit Malviya was the first one to respond to the development. “The tormentor of the middle class is back… Congress hoodwinks India, brings back Sam Pitroda soon after elections. Hua toh hua,” he posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Earlier in May this year, Pitodra was in the limelight for his statements regarding the implementation of an inheritance tax law in India and making remarks about regional appearances. He suggested that South Indians “look like Africans,” those in the West “look like Arabs,” and those in the East “look like Chinese.”
“We are a shining example of democracy in the world... We could hold a country together as diverse as India, where people in the East look like Chinese, people in the West look like Arabs, people in the North look maybe white, and people in the South look like Africans. It doesn’t matter; we are all brothers and sisters,” he said.
As his statement faced protest, he resigned as the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress.
His ‘racist statements’ also attracted a great response from the Prime Minister who clearly mentioned the same in his campaigning speeches. “Congress has, time and again, proved that it is against the people of India,” he said.

"No Tie-Up With Congress": Mamata Banerjee's Bengal Twist Stuns INDIA Bloc
The Trinamool Congress will contest the elections for Bengal's 42 Lok Sabha seats on its own steam, and only consider a pan-India alliance with the Congress after results are declared, a furious Mamata Banerjee declared Wednesday. Ms Banerjee's words deliver what appears to be a final blow to hopes the two parties - widely seen as important members of the INDIA opposition bloc - will reach any agreement.
Tumblr media
"I had no discussions with the Congress. I have always said that in Bengal, we will fight alone. I gave them (the Congress) many proposals… but they rejected them. I am not concerned about what will be done in the (rest of the) country… but we are a secular party and, in Bengal, we alone will defeat BJP."
In further signs of fraying tempers, she also hit out at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and his 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra', which is expected to enter Bengal on Thursday but might skip Kolkata.
"They are coming to my state… but did not have courtesy to inform me, even though I am part of the INDIA bloc. So there is no relations with me, as far as Bengal is concerned," she told reporters.
Ms Banerjee has a good rapport with Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi, but her ties with Mr Gandhi are seen as strained. She has made it clear, earlier too, she is against allowing her 'ally' to contest in Bengal.
"INDIA will be present in India (but) in Bengal the Trinamool Congress will fight. In Bengal it is only Trinamool that can teach the BJP a lesson. It can show the country the path to victory…" she had said.
Minutes later the Congress responded through comms boss Jairam Ramesh.
Mr Ramesh, who is with Rahul Gandhi and the yatra in Assam, said his party "cannot imagine INDIA bloc without Mamataji". Mr Ramesh insisted "all INDIA partners will unitedly fight Lok Sabha polls in Bengal".
Ms Banerjee's announcement has drawn a scathing jibe from the BJP's Amit Malviya, who called it a "sign of desperation". "Unable to hold her political ground, Mamata Banerjee wants to fight all seats, in the hope that she can still be relevant, after the polls…" the BJP's IT Cell boss posted on X.
The Trinamool vs Congress squabble over seat-sharing, and the larger picture of how INDIA might defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP, has rumbled on for weeks with no apparent resolution, with neither side willing to back down. The Congress has, so far, ignored deadlines to close a deal.
On Tuesday Ms Banerjee criticised the Congress' "unjustified" demand for 10-12 Lok Sabha seats in her state; she had offered two, pointing to its' abysmal record. It won four seats in 2014 and only two in 2019.
A senior Trinamool leader, on condition of anonymity, told news agency PTI, "(Ms Banerjee) said, 'Don't think about seat-sharing with Congress'… she said she offered two seats but they demanded 10-12".
Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh last week warned the Congress against "unjustified bargaining".
Meanwhile, Ms Banerjee, in a show of strength, has directed party leaders in Birbhum and Murshidabad district to begin planning for the combined five Lok Sabha seats on their own. The latter is key because one of its three seats is Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's constituency of Berhampore.
Mr Chowdhury, the Congress' state unit boss, is fiercely opposed to sharing seats with the Trinamool, and has repeatedly attacked Ms Banerjee, despite efforts from leaders on both sides to stitch an alliance. He responded to the offer by declaring Ms Banerjee owed her success to the "mercy" of the Congress.
Rahul Gandhi, asked about these attacks, played them down, insisting "Mamata Banerjee is very close to me and our party" and that it is "natural", sometimes, for the two sides to criticise each other.
But they are not going to disrupt the relations between the Congress and the TMC," he insisted.
Meanwhile, away from Bengal, the Trinamool is also unhappy over the Congress' refusal to play second fiddle to regional parties when required. The Congress has already been criticised for this by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav after it refused to share seats for November's Madhya Pradesh election.
Ms Banerjee on Monday said the Congress was welcome to fight 300 seats on its own, but urged the party to surrender some seats to regional parties that will have the best chance of defeating the BJP.
"Particular regions should be left to regional parties. They can fight 300 seats alone… I will help them, I will not contest those seats… but they are adamant about doing what they want," she said.
"I have the power to take on the BJP, but some people don't want to listen to us about seat-sharing. If you don't want to fight the BJP, then at least don't give away seats to it," the fiery Trinamool leader said.
Ms Banerjee is one of the few opposition leaders to have enjoyed electoral success against the BJP in recent years, after orchestrating a statement win over the saffron party in the last Assembly election.
In 2019 too she ensured her party had an edge, winning 22 seats. That, though, was less than the 34 from five years ago. Ominously, BJP went from two to 18.

Amit Malviya vs. The Wire: What’s Happening?
This article on 'Amit Malviya vs. The Wire: What’s Happening?' was written by Akash Sharma, an intern at Legal Upanishad.
Introduction
The news website 'The Wire' was sued in October 2022 by Amit Malviya, the head of the Bharatiya Janata Party's IT department, who claimed that it had used "forged documents with a view to malign and tarnish" his reputation. The Wire had published a series of articles alleging that Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, had granted Malviya special privileges that allowed him to have posts removed from their platforms. The reports were based on a fabricated Instagram incident report, according to Meta. The Wire subsequently retracted the articles and apologized to Malviya. However, Malviya has maintained that the damage has already been done and that he intends to pursue legal action against the news website. This article attempts to analyse the facts, laws, and judgement of the given case between The Wire and Amit Malviya. Contact Us and avail the best assignment help for students available online!
Facts of the case
In October 2022, The Wire published a series of articles alleging that Meta, the parent company of Instagram, had granted Amit Malviya, the IT cell head of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), special privileges that enabled him to take down posts he objected to. The articles were based on a purported Instagram incident report that Meta said was fabricated. Malviya filed a criminal defamation case against 'The Wire' and its journalists, alleging that they had deliberately published false and defamatory information about him with the intent to malign and tarnish his reputation.
Laws Involved
The law involved in this case is Section 499 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with the offense of defamation. When someone publishes or makes an incorrect statement, accusation, or false imputation about another person, whether through visual cues, oral communication, words, or any other means, Section 499 of the IPC states the following: “Whoever, by words either spoken or intended to be read, by signs, by visible representations, makes or publishes any imputation concerning any person intending to harm, knowing or having reason to believe that such imputation will harm the reputation of such person, is said, except in the cases hereinafter excepted, to defame that person.” The legal issues involved in the Amit Malviya vs. The Wire case include defamation, criminal conspiracy, forgery, and cheating.
Judgements
The case is still pending before the Delhi High Court. However, in October 2022, the court granted Malviya interim relief, directing The Wire to take down the articles and refrain from publishing any further defamatory content about him.
Conclusion/ Analysis
This case raises a number of important issues related to the freedom of the press, the right to reputation, and the need to combat fake news. On the one hand, journalists have a right to report on matters of public interest, even if those matters involve criticism of public figures. However, this right is not absolute. Journalists must ensure that their reporting is accurate and fair, and they must not publish false or defamatory information with the intent to harm someone's reputation. On the other hand, public figures also have a right to protect their reputations. If someone publishes false or defamatory information about a public figure, that person may be able to sue for defamation. In this case, Malviya has alleged that 'The Wire' deliberately, with the intention of tarnishing and maligning his reputation, published false and defamatory information about him. If Malviya is able to prove this allegation, he may be successful in his defamation case. However, even if The Wire is found to have published false information, it may be able to defend itself on the grounds that it was acting in the public interest. The Wire has argued that its articles were based on a purported Instagram incident report that it received from a source. If The Wire can show that it reasonably believed that the report was genuine, it may be able to avoid liability for defamation. Ultimately, the outcome of this case will depend on the facts and the law. However, the case raises important questions about the balance between the freedom of the press and the right to reputation. The case of Amit Malviya vs. The Wire is still pending before the Delhi High Court. However, the case has already raised important questions about the freedom of the press, the right to reputation, and the need to combat fake news. The outcome of this case will be closely watched by journalists, public figures, and the legal community.

Ex MP Behind IAS Officer's Murder To Be Freed As Bihar Tweaks Prison Rules
Among those who will be released is former MP Anand Mohan Singh who was convicted in the 1994 murder of then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah.
Tumblr media
New Delhi/Patna: The Bihar government today notified the release of 27 prisoners, days after amending the Bihar Prison Manual that triggered a massive opposition backlash. Among those who will be released is former MP Anand Mohan Singh who was convicted in the 1994 murder of bureaucrat G Krishnaiah.
G Krishnaiah, then Gopalganj District Magistrate, was killed by a mob allegedly provoked by Anand Mohan Singh. The gangster-turned-politician was sentenced to death in 2007 by a lower court in Bihar. The Patna High Court, however, commuted it to life imprisonment; that order was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2012.
Earlier this month, the Bihar government had removed the clause which had forbidden the remission of jail term for those convicted of murdering a public servant on duty.
In its notification, the state’s law department said that the new rules were for prisoners who have served the actual sentence of 14 years or a sentence of 20 years with remission.
“In light of the Bihar state sentence remission council meeting on April 20, the decision was taken for the release of prisoners having served actual sentence of 14 years or sentence of 20 years with remission,” the notification said.
The change in rules and Anand Mohan Singh’s release has stirred up huge controversy, with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) terming the change in rules as “anti-Dalit”.
“The move by the Nitish government to prepare the release of Anand Mohan after changing rules in the case of the brutal murder of extremely honest IAS officer G Krishnaiah, who belonged to a poor Dalit family from Andhra Pradesh’s Mehboobnagar (now in Telangana), is being discussed for negative and anti-Dalit reasons in the whole country,” Ms Mayawati tweeted on Sunday.
She asked the Nitish Kumar government to reconsider the decision, saying that Anand Mohan Singh’s release would anger the Dalit community.
BJP’s IT Cell head Amit Malviya also hit out at Nitish Kumar. “Can someone who is leaning on a criminal syndicate, to hold on to power, be the face of India, even as opposition leader?” Mr Malviya tweeted on Monday.
The ruling Janata Dal (United) hit back at the BJP, with a “B-team in UP” jibe also at Mayawati. In a tweet, JDU leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh said that the change in rules was aimed at getting the common man and special prisoners on a uniform platform.
The change in the Bihar prison manual benefits Anand Mohan Singh, a Rajput leader with considerable influence on his caste voters.
For the last two years, several politicians from the Rajput community have been demanding Singh’s early release. Even Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has on multiple occasions hinted that he “stands by his former colleague”.
