An Exclusive Interview With Queen!
Music Life September 1975 issue
By Kaoruko Togo and Keiko Miyasaka
[Original text in Japanese, translation by deathtoming]
Around noon on July 14th, we left the hotel by car, and around two hours later we arrived at the beautiful Ridge Farm, surrounded by trees. We were blessed with clear skies on this day, and the blue sky and the greenery of the farm were almost blindingly beautiful. It was a bit past 2 o’clock. When we arrived in the main building, we were first greeted by a large dog, followed by a familiar voice from a room in the back. It was a large food hall, with Freddie, Brian, Roger, and John present.
When they see us, the four of them say, “Hello! You’re from Music Life, right? Welcome!” and greet us with handshakes. The four of them rented this Ridge Farm to focus solely on rehearsing for their next album. “We’re about to have lunch. Want to join us?” We knew we couldn’t work while hungry, so we accepted their offer with thanks. When the meal finished, we could begin our interview at last….
Music Life (ML): Are you in the middle of recording now?
Roger: No, we’re not recording yet. We’re all practising our new songs together. Once we practise them, we get an idea of how we should record them, I think.
ML: When do you think you’ll start recording?
Roger Maybe in about 3 weeks…
John: We might use Rockfield Studios in Wales.
ML: Do you always record there?
Roger: No, not really, although we did a bit of recording there for our third album, Sheer Heart Attack.
Freddie. We used around five studios to record that one. We’ll probably use several studios this time around, too.
ML: You’ll do a bit of recording in London, too, right?
Roger: Probably a little bit, yeah. We usually do our mixing in London.
Brian: But when we first record the backing track, it’s better to do it somewhere where we’re nice and settled, so it’s good to do it while we’re holed out in the studio. By doing that, we’re able to relax and do the recording.
ML: Can you tell us something about your upcoming album?
Freddie: Yeah, well we only have the rough framework at this point, but I think it will be our best work so far. We’re in the middle of creating the songs now.
Roger: Nothing has really come together yet, so it’s difficult to explain.
John: When we first came here we presented what songs we had written so far to each other, and we had about two albums’ worth, haha.
ML: I hear you’re heading to the US on tour soon.
John: Probably. Our manager is in the US now, and he’s apparently in talks with a bunch of people.
Freddie: We have to decide whether to record the album or go on tour in the US like we had decided during our previous tour.
ML: How long have you been working with your producer?
Freddie: His name is Roy Thomas Baker, and he’s been with us since our debut album.
Roger: We’re co-producing the album with him. Our next album will be with him, too.
ML: This Ridge Farm is such a beautiful place. How did you find it?
Roger: Our mixer, John Harris, found it. The owner often rents out this place to rock groups, apparently.
<At this point, an airplane flies overhead, making an extremely loud noise! Everyone shouts “Quiet!”>
ML: When you write your songs, do you do it individually?
Freddie: Yes, that’s right. Everyone writes their own songs in their own homes, and then brings it to places like this and we all work on it.
ML: How many songs will be on this album?
Freddie: I don’t know yet. Maybe around 12.
ML: When will it be released?
Freddie: That depends on a lot of things. But I want it out some time this year. It will probably be by the end of this year.
ML: What have you been up to since you came back from Japan?
Freddie: For several weeks, we kept on talking about our time in Japan, haha. We’d unwrap the presents we got from Japan. Please pass along our thanks to our fans in Japan, because we were really treated so kindly.
<An airplane makes another appearance. The four look up and protest again.>
ML: Is there anything that stands out in particular from your time in Japan?
Roger: Aside from the people we met, probably our final show in Tokyo. Something felt special. It was also our final show in Japan. The atmosphere was wonderful.
John: I also remember appearing in a kimono on stage for the first time in that concert.
ML: What about Japanese food?
Freddie: Like, tempura, haha. We went to a Japanese restaurant with our bodyguards in Japan. Oh that’s right, please send our regards to those bodyguards; we owe them a lot.
ML: What do you want to do the most the next time you’re in Japan?
Roger: I’m going to go shopping for sure, haha! Things like tape recorders and other things. Last time, Freddie bought lots of ceramics, and Brian and John bought cameras.
ML: Brian, you like cameras, don’t you?
Brian: Yeah, I do photography sometimes, and I have lots of other hobbies. Right now I’m really into audio.
ML: Since when have you been taking pictures?
Brian: Since quite a long time ago. But I only recently got a good camera. In England, cameras are so expensive.
ML: This is especially the case in Japan, but you have a lot of young girls for fans. What do you think about that?
Roger: It’s outstanding, haha! Japanese fans in particular give us lots of presents. We don’t get too many gifts from other countries, but it seems to be a part of the Japanese tradition.
ML: Among your young, female Japanese fans, there are some who say that Queen is their first encounter with rock music.
Roger: Great!
Freddie: That’s a good thing. It was really exciting when we were in Japan, and I think it was probably the same kind of atmosphere as it was for the Beatles in the ‘60s.
<The others chime in with comments like, “That’s really good!”>
ML: Were there any interesting gifts from Japan?
Brian: I received a lot of birthday gifts, so thank you very much to all of you for those presents. I received many works of art, and also things like dolls and traditional balls wrapped with beautiful string. We got lots of toys, too.
Roger: That ball with the string was hand-made, right? I got one, too.
<The plane flies by again, distressing the band.>
ML: In your free time, what kind of music do you listen to?
Roger: I’ve been listening to Led Zeppelin's first album.
Freddie: Lately, classical. Like, Chopin. Also things like Led Zeppelin and John Lennon.
ML: Freddie, you have a broad range of interests.
Freddie: Of course. I’ll listen to anything that I like. That said, there’s no artist whose album I’d buy as soon as it was released.
ML: Brian, what about you?
Brian: Pretty much the same as everyone else. I often listen to Led Zeppelin.
ML: There’s a place called “Rhye” in the lyrics for Lily of the Valley, but is that a real place in England?
Freddie: No, it’s a land from my imagination. It’s also mentioned in Seven Seas of Rhye, and I guess it’s like a fairy tale.
Roger: There is a place called “Rye” in England, although the spelling is different.
ML: Your songs’ lyrics seem to be influenced by classical poets.
Freddie: You’re referring to lyric poetry. I don’t think we’re influenced by that too much. Truthfully, I don’t have time to read. I just like expressing myself in that way. Those kinds of expressions are easier.
ML: Do the really passionate lyrics for love songs come from your personal experiences?
Roger: Ahhhh--!! Haha, yeah right! But I guess there’s, uh, a little bit of something in there.<Grinning> But Brian sometimes writes really passionate ones.
ML: She Makes Me is quite the song, isn’t it?
Brian: No, it’s not like that at all. <Acting quite bashfully> Although there are times when my personal experiences are expressed in song lyrics.
<The rest of the band hoot and holler at this!>
ML: The band does a good job recreating the sound from your records live on stage, don’t you?
Roger: We’re not trying to reproduce what you hear on the record exactly, though. Of course we want to produce a good sound, but on stage we also need to add an exciting mood to the quality of the sound. So that’s why it needs to be a little different from the album.
ML: Which do you like better, recording or performing live?
Freddie: I like both. They’re both interesting in their own ways.
ML: Do you use any special equipment on stage?
Roger: No, although Brian uses echo machines and such.
ML: Do you have a lighting technician?
Freddie: We do have one, but the band comes up with the idea, and our lighting guy -- his name is James Dann -- takes care of the rest. We’ve already come up with our next stage design and it’s going to be interesting.
<The plane flies by again. Everyone looks defeated.>
ML: Killer Queen was a big hit single; are hit singles important to you?
Roger: It’s not absolutely necessary. But we’ll keep on releasing singles. Of course we’ll only release ones we like, though.
ML: Which do you like better, singles or albums?
Freddie: Definitely albums! I think our music is geared more towards albums rather than singles.
Roger: Rather than releasing single after single, it’s better if there happens to be a song in the album that works well as a single, and we release it if the timing is right. It’s not good if we start thinking we need to release a single every 3 months.
John: On this upcoming album as well, we will record everything first, and then release something if it works well as a single. But we don’t particularly record only songs that would work as singles.
ML: Does it seem like you’ll have another song like Killer Queen?
Freddie: No, when Seven Seas of Rhye became a hit in England, the people at the record company wanted our next song to be like that, but we couldn’t do it. We go in the studio and record what we’re feeling at that time, and only after everything is finished do we decide as a group what to release as a single.
ML: So, you’re always looking for a new sound?
Freddie: It’s more interesting that way.
Roger: That’s why we come to places like this, and while we’re rehearsing we make a bunch of noise and form songs from that.
ML: Did someone serve as an inspiration for Killer Queen?
Roger: Freddie’s mom.
<Everyone bursts out laughing>
ML: Do you have plans for a British tour?
Roger: Yeah. Probably by the end of this year.
John: But first we need to record our album, and we don’t know what will come after.
ML: Which country’s fans do you like?
John: Japan’s, of course, haha!
Brian: <Speaking seriously> We were really surprised by the reaction of our Japanese fans. Honestly speaking, we didn’t realize it was at that level.
Roger: We thought there would be difficulties because of the language difference, but rock fans are the same around the world, in the end.
ML: Did you have a break after you came back from Japan?
John: Just a little. But we had lots of preparation to do, so it’s like we didn’t have a break.
ML: And uhh… now I’d like to ask about things outside of the music. It’s something Japanese fans want to know: when did you fall in love for the first time? What kind of person were they?
<Everyone reacts in horror, and they point at each other, with no one answering the question. Finally, Freddie speaks for the group.>
Freddie: Err… our first love is, of course, music, haha.
ML: Do you have any memories from when you were going to school?
Roger: I haaaaated school!
ML: What about you, Brian?
Brian: I went to an all boys school. I had no idea what girls were like, right up to when I graduated when I was 18. It was really a shock when I first got to know girls. But that’s the British school system for you. I was raised away from girls for so long that I was afraid to meet them.
Freddie: You’re still afraid of them, aren’t you? Haha. <This was a tough joke>
ML: Freddie, what subjects did you like in school?
Roger Oh, I know! ”Needlework”! <Everyone bursts out laughing>
Freddie: Art. I studied graphics and illustration at an art school for 3 years.
ML: What about sports?
Freddie: I did everything. Cricket, tennis…
ML: Do you still meet up with your friends from school?
Freddie: I often meet with around two of them.
ML: And, finally, are you married?
Roger: Japanese fans often want to know things like that, but I won’t say. <Roger winks mischievously.>
Freddie: We’re all single! But the Japanese girls have to find that out for themselves.
ML: Let’s get a message from each one of you to our readers…
And with that, the friendly interview came to an end. We were fortunate that the band talked to us in a relaxed mood while bathing in the bright sun.

Date Headcanons | Everyone
Thought I’d write something for everyone so that I can get used to it & you can see my style of writing.
- Nexus.
Joker { Akira Kurusu }
✧ Akira is definitely the type of partner who indulges in more casual dates. Although he has the money & resources in order to do something more classy due to his moonlighting as a Phantom Thief, he prefers more quaint locations where both himself & his partner can enjoy each other’s company instead of the location.
✧ He fundamentally believes that if he can enjoy himself around his significant other without needing to spend vast amounts of money, he’s found someone he can rely on for life. His life is naturally very very stressful so he finds solace in moments where he can simply be himself.
✧ During the date itself, he is the epitome of a gentleman { he does have max Charm, after all! }. Offering to pay for the meal; blatantly flirting but not crossing any unspoken boundaries; Casual touches of affection to fluster them. All in all, Akira simply enjoys having company that’s not related to Phantom Thief business & having someone who doesn’t only want to see him in order to seek out comfort.
Skull { Ryuji Sakamoto }
✧ Another one who likes casual dates. However, he is much less formal about it. Although confident on the outside, on the inside he is very nervous about a date. Ryuji is of the opinion that if he cannot be himself during a date, it would not feel natural. So, he takes his significant other places that seem like fun.
✧ Being the athletic type, Ryuji encourages his significant other to run with him. It is rather cathartic and good training. Starting out with shorter routes, they would be encouraged by him all throughout. Afterwards, there’s a high chance that the two of them would head out for ramen together as a ‘ treat ’.
✧ Other ideas would include the arcade or simply heading to his house. Introducing his partner to his mother is a key part of the relationship, since he desperately wants them to like each other { it wouldn’t be difficult, Ryuji’s mother is just as sweet as his son!! }.
Panther { Ann Takamaki }
✧ There are two types of dates with Ann: Food dates & Fashion dates.
✧ Food dates are usually more common. They consist of going to a restaurant she recommends or finding a dessert and ordering two. Ann encourages her significant other to try new things & expand their horizons much like how she’s trying to strengthen her heart.
✧ Fashion dates occur when Ann’s side job as a model comes into play. If she is in need of new clothes for a particular style or wants to try something new, it is likely to be turned into a date.
✧ Ann knows exactly what fits the body type of her partner & clothes that would make them look good. She wants them to be able to express themselves and feel good about it at the same time!!
✧ In return, all that is asked of them is that they honestly critique the clothing choices she has selected out for herself { she looks great in everything though }.
Fox { Yusuke Kitagawa }
✧ Yusuke’s interpretation of dates is... Strange. No matter what, it has to be visually stimulating & help inspire him in his career of art. He would die for art without a second thought and that reflects in his choices of location.
✧ For example, Inokashira Park is a perfect spot. It costs little money, has beautiful scenery & has a relaxing atmosphere. Throughout the entire experience, there is small gestures of casual affection. Not enough for people to be staring but just enough for it to be noticeable by them.
✧{ After his scuffle with searching for true beauty with Akira, he learns a little more about social ettique & how the boat ride they took could have been misinterpreted as a date. }
✧ However... Sometimes he forgets that going to places costs money. If a local art museum has a special showing, Yusuke will buy two tickets impulsively & invite his significant other to the event. Then he’ll be crushed by the reality of the train fares.
Queen { Makoto Niijima }
✧ At first, Makoto has no idea how to plan a date. She would definitely flunk a test about love, so to speak. However, it is very endearing. Study dates would be the most common, where they could go over any material either of them didn’t understand in classes. She prides herself over being able to assist her significant other.
✧ Once she becomes more adapted to stereotypical teenage life, there is a higher likelyhood of more outdoorsy dates. Her favourite spot is Chinatown because of all the vastly different stores and foods.
✧ She finds it a relaxing experience to people watch. Usually it’s done through the window of a cafe where she offhandedly comments about how different people are dressed & how they interact with each other. Makoto is very insightful.
Oracle { Futaba Sakura }
✧ Going anywhere is mostly out of the question. Futaba struggles with socialising & although she is trying her best to open up a little more, it will be an ongoing process.
✧ Playing video games until 3am or talking about the latest manga edition released from the comfort of her bedroom is one of her favourite things to do with a significant other. It is the one time where she feels comfortable to talk & even if they do not quite understand every thing she is saying, she is very happy to go into depth and explain.
✧ However, there would be one or two occasions where Futaba wants to push herself & go out somewhere. Beforehand, Sojiro would be lecturing her partner about keeping her safe & making sure she’s okay but wishes the two of them a good time.
✧ Although there’s moments where Futaba is overstimulated & needs a break, it is a fun experience! Akihabara is definitely a good place to start & buying a game as a reward for braving it will earn them a beaming smile of sunshine.
Noir { Haru Okumura }
✧ Haru has very few qualms about spending extravagant amounts of money on a single date. She thinks like a celebrity & aims to impress her significant other. Just because she spends a lot of money does not mean she is not thoughtful, though. Most dates will be something her significant other has mentioned interest in. She pays attention!!
✧ Throughout the entire outing, she is not afraid to initiate physical contact. Holding hands is a common & subtle gesture that she never really achieved with her previous marriage so she cherishes gentle intimacy.
✧ However, it eventually becomes known that she prefers cheaper & more heart-to-heart style dates. Making a picnic for her partner with the vegetables / fruits from her garden brings unparalleled joy. Especially when they give advice and talk about the taste & how they could improve. Her dream is to run a homegrown café after all!!
Crow { Goro Akechi }
✧ Akechi is either the most gentlemanly man anyone has ever been on a date with or he wants to unwind from a stressful day. Dates are few & far between with his particularly busy schedule, alongside the influence of his female fans bothering him particularly turns him off the idea most of the time.
✧ So, there are two solutions: Dates that are indoors so that no one knows where they are & incredibly extravagant dates that the media cannot gain access to.
✧ Indoor ones usually involve attending the Jazz Club in Kichijoji. It is a relaxing place with few people to bother his significant other, since there are few that know about the place. Throughout the entire occasion, he makes light conversation and is hesitant about accepting physical contact for fear of his reputation but eventually settles on taking his gloves off and interlocking hands with them.
✧ The other solution is usually reserved for special occasions. Although Akechi is wealthy due to his work as a detective, he is more deliberate with his purchases and understands the value of money. In these situations, he intentionally plays up his role as a detective prince & is even more suave than Akira. There is a lot of flirtation in a very polite manner, almost as if testing the waters.
✧ Although he genuinely enjoys these sessions, it is his job to play the role of a prince, even for his significant other. Akechi is practised at pretending.
Violet { Sumire Yoshizawa }
✧ Incredibly flustered at first, no matter what happens. Every step with her is filled with stuttering & a face the same colour as her hair but she’s willing to try her best!!
✧ Absolutely wants her significant other to come to her routines & competitions. If they are not there, she feels incomplete. It throws her game off which in turn creates more issues in the future.
✧{ At some point, her coach comes to speak to them and essentially demands they be at every session so Sumire can achieve her best. }
✧ Sumire also really likes different scenery. The aquarium in Shinagawa is a breathtaking sight from her perspective. No pressure to perform & the ability simply be herself allows for a much more natural date.
{ Yuuki Mishima }
✧ Mishima is much like Futaba in that he would prefer a date indoors. Although he is more confident after everything that happened with Kamoshida, he is still more shocked that he actually has a significant other.
✧ Most of his spare time when not doing schoolwork is spent on running the Phansite so when Mishima wants to spend time with them, he prefers low energy activities at home such as watching a movie with snacks or sitting & talking together.
✧ If he ever attempted to take them out somewhere, it would be adorable. There would be a lot of doting on them and ensuring that they’re having a good time & he needs this validation because of his self esteem issues. { Telling Mishima that the date was fun or that they enjoyed it will result in an adorable smile & red face }.
{ Hifumi Togo }
✧ Much like Yusuke, Hifumi enjoys dates with her significant other that are practical. If there’s a new book on some of the lastest Shogi techniques, she’ll take them to the bookstore in Jinbocho & make a date out of it.
✧ Although she sometimes struggles to articulate her feelings properly, it is often made up for with the purchase of a gift. Nothing expensive since she is still a high school student but instead something deeply personal that will mean a lot, such as a piece of jewellery or a particular book they are interested in.
✧ Also loves going to the church in Kanda for a practice game. Even if they are not very good at Shogi, she’ll teach them how to play and encourages them to develop their own style of play. After each game, she analyses all of the different moves used in that game & how they changed the game.

TMA x Persona 5 crossover
I’m combining my newest obsession with one of my favorite games ‘cause I love playing the game “what characters from X series would belong to Y category from Y series”
So...
Persona 5, but all the characters belong to different entities from the Magnus Archives (Note: this’ll be based off of the original game, as I have not been able to afford the new release of Royal, and so have not played it yet.) Main Cast: Akira/Ren: Beholding. I debated for a long time about what to pick. What fit the protagonist better? Did his attempts to appear harmless mean he was better suited for the Spiral and it’s deceptions? Or does the fact that he’s a Wild Card able to mold himself into anything his friends needs align him with the Stranger? Or does his anger at unjust treatment give him the greatest connection to the Slaughter, or the Desolation? In the end I went with Beholding not only because that’s what I made the Velvet attendants, but because the Beholding also witnesses all the other entities. It has ties to all of them, even the Stranger which is it’s antithesis along with the Dark. It would make sense that he would have access, have KNOWLEDGE, of all the other entities under this power. Ryuji: The Vast. I almost gave him the Lonely, as after Kamoshida broke his leg he was isolated from his peers, but Ryuji doesn’t WANT to be alone. None of the other entities felt right. The Flesh is too literal, the Web requires more smarts than this boy has, the Corruption makes no sense and so on. I eventually went with the Vast because Ryuji always talks about freedom, and how running made all of his worries fade away, how it helped him connect to his other teammates. Avatars of the Vast have a very laid back look on life and are by far some of the most friendly you can run into, though it doesn’t make them any less dangerous.
Morgana: Beholding. I was originally thinking about whether to make him a Spiral creature or maybe the Stranger, but I realized that whatever Morgana was, then the other velvet room attendants would have to be it as well. And Igor’s JOB is to know things and help guide the player without actually interfering. He can’t belong to anything BUT the Beholding.
Ann: The Stranger: I wasn’t super sure about this one, as the Stranger relies heavily on deception-which Ann is NOT good at-but looking back at all the statements that involve it, it’s evident that it doesn’t try to be GOOD at deception either. How would you know something’s not right if the act was perfect? And as a model, Ann needs to be able to put on different attitudes in order to have presence.
Yusuke: The Spiral. I wasn’t sure which one to give to Yusuke originally. Again, the Lonely was my original thought, as his eccentricities make it hard for him to connect to other people, but being isolated is something that happens TO him, not something he pursues. Yusuke says that he wants to inspire people the way the Sayuri did for him, wants to show the world in new ways. And what better Entity/Patron to follow then the one that does exactly that? The spiral is about fooling the senses, making you see things that aren’t there or perceiving things in impossible ways. What better way is there to describe how art is supposed to make people feel?
Makoto: This girl belongs to the Hunt. You might think the Slaughter because of the rage she feels at being treated like a doormat but nope! That’s her sister. Her sense of justice makes her pursue her prey. She stalks Akira, set traps for him and the Phantom thieves. Not to mention that she wants to be a cop-which tend to lean towards the Hunt due to pursuing criminals. Futaba: Beholding all the way. This girl wants to Know everything, wants to Understand above all. While her vision might have been clouded by grief after her mother’s death, she still Knew they were lying to her and pursued the truth relentlessly.
Haru: Slaughter. I don’t think I have to explain this one do I? Girl canonically has sadistic tendencies, and while one COULD argue that Sadism fits the Desolation better, she doesn’t destroy for destruction’s sake.
Akechi: Desolation. I was originally going to give this boy the Slaughter like Haru due to his anger, until I realized that the anger wasn’t the point. It was directed at Shido. At building him up as high as possible just to take it all away from him. That’s quintessential Desolation mentality. The Desolation is about loss more than fire, and Akechi is determined to make Shido lose EVERYTHING, and believes anything destroyed in that process will be worth it, just to see the expression on his father’s face as he pulls the rug out from under him.
Confidants:
Sadayo Kawakami: Victim of the Buried. Not just because of her debt, but also because of her guilt. The Buried can be metaphorical as well as physical, and Kawakami is an excellent example of that. Sae Nijima: Slaughter. Her anger and tendency to lash out at Makoto are what made me decide on this Entity. She isn’t an Avatar. Like Melanie, she was infected with it and was slowly becoming more and more angry and violent.
Sojiro Sakura: Hunt. He’s been out of the game for a while, so the instincts have largely gone away, but as Wakaba’s friend he learned a lot and that knowledge has helped him keep Futaba safe.
Munehisa Iwai: Slaughter. Former Yakuza? Of course it’s Slaughter; but taking in Kaoru and leaving his clan cut him off from the entity and nowadays he’s just a normal human.
Toranosuke Yoshida: Victim of the Lonely. Being evicted from congress isolated him and left everyone unwilling to listen to him.
Ichiko Ohya: the Dark. It doesn’t fit perfectly. The Dark is about hiding information, not publishing it;  but in game her abilities allow you to move around undetected, and her articles help your reputation. I almost went with the Spiral considering how she deceives people, but the characters don’t all need to be Avatars who symbolize their patron. I see it more likely that Ohya is a victim of the Dark, as Shido’s organization is trying to keep her from the truth.
Chihaya Mifune: Web. As a genuine fortune teller it only makes sense that she would be aligned with the Weavers.
Tae Takemi: The End. Enough said.
Shinya Oda: The Hunt. He’s always searching for weaknesses, whether that’s in his competitors or the enemies in game.
Hifumi Togo: The Web. Not only do her abilities allow you greater control over battes, but she’s also caught in the Web of her mother’s making when she’s trying to turn Hifumi into a model.
Yuki Mishima: The Corruption. Mishima uses his ‘position’ as the Phantom Thieves manager to try and gain others respect and take advantage of people. Corruption isn’t always about literal filth and decay, so I think this kind of moral Corruption would definitely put him under this Entities gaze.
Igor: Beholding. I explained this earlier in Morgana’s part, but Igor just fits the Beholding. He has knowledge that he shares with the player to aid in their journey, but he never interferes, never takes action.
Caroline: The Slaughter. I know I said that all the Velvet attendants would be beholding, but I thought that since the twins were two halves of one person, it would be interesting if their Patrons were different to reflect her broken nature. Justine: The End. I wanted to originally go for something different, like the Lonely or the Web. But Justine is a lot calmer than her sister, almost emotionless, and most of all she’s PATIENT, which is a trademark of the End.
Lavenza: Beholding. As a Velvet attendant, she shares the same Patron as Igor.
Palace Rulers: Kamoshida: The Flesh. At first I didn’t know which Entity to give him. Should it be the Hunt, considering his lustful pursuit of the girls? Or maybe the Buried as he tries to pressure Ann into sleeping with him, using Shiho to keep her at his side. I eventually settled on the Flesh because even though Kamoshida was willing to do anything to get Ann as soon as possible and hurt Shiho when she turned him down in retaliation, the Hunt will never stop their pursuit because THAT’S THE FUN PART. There is no end for them. Kamoshida did want to catch Ann.
Madarame: The Spiral. I was originally going to go with the Lonely since he isolates his students, but other than that surface comparison, Madarame has no connection to the Lonely. He relied far more heavily on deceiving his students and tricking them into thinking that they owe him their artwork due to his mentoring them.
Kaneshiro: The Corruption. I mean, he turns into a fly. What more is there to say, except that he possesses the same moral corruption that infects Mishima?
Okumura: The Buried. I originally went with the Flesh, but it felt far too literal. I eventually settled on the Buried as Okumura oppresses his workers and smothers them under exhaustion and debt to the company to keep them in line.
Shido: The Web. I thought about going with the Beholding as a sort of parallel to both the protagonist and Jonah Magnus from TMA, but Shido doesn’t want knowledge. He wants control, to exert his will on the masses, and that’s Web, not Beholding. Yaldabaoth: The Web. The ultimate expression of manipulation. Father of Puppets.

Are you surprised? After all you did kinda of break his trust of course he won’t want anything to do with you. And now you’re sicking sirene on him? You’re going to make things worse.
//Ok. Real talk time. I’m not usually one for confrontation but at this point I really can’t take it anymore. If I had known all of this would have caused so much trouble, I would have never sent that interaction to Togos and every single day I hate myself and regret that I did. Before I say anything though I will say this. Don’t any of you DARE send any hate to any other blog in this AU. Not to Makie, not to Lucy, NO ONE. In fact, I don’t want any asks being sent about what I’m about to say. I consider every mun in this AU to be a friend and what I’m about to say has nothing to do with any of them because like I said weeks ago, We are real people behind the screen and all we want to do is have fun. I’m going to explain Hana now though MY characterization of her, and explain her actions the way I see them. You can disagree, I just ask you to put away your opinion for a second to hear me out. Hana lost her parents a year ago, she lost her home, her family, everything. She was forced to move to a completely different country where she didn’t know the language or anyone but her aunt (yes the one that tried to kill her) with the only thing surviving from her old life being her mother’s necklace, her miraculous. For a long time she had no one until she found Fenrir and the villain family. When Hana met them, she felt like she could finally piece her life back together. Then her aunt, the one she trusted and loved the most, the one who was supposed to take care of her, tried to murder her over her miraculous. Togos was one of the reasons why she was saved (of course Fenrir was the biggest but there were others) when she went to Togos, she had no and I mean 0 intention of asking her to mentor her. It was an impulsive decision based on Hana’s desire to do better. (This will be explained further below) She realized after the fact the mistake she had made, how deeply hurtful and messed up what she did was to her family. She was overwhelmed by her emotions and of course Kintsugi happened. What she did was messed up, she broke their trust and trust is not easy to amend but it was an accident. Anon if you can tell me that you’ve never accidentally hurt someone before then I will accept that but Hana isn’t perfect, she is human and is going to make mistakes. Hana tried to apologize to Lukas, telling him that she knows what she did was messed up and she literally said to him that she understands if he hates her or doesn’t trust him anymore (and I can give screenshots if you want), she just wants him to be happy even if she isn’t in his life. She gave her miraculous to Lukas because dear god who else does she have to trust? Hana wants to focus on recovery and she wanted to make sure her miraculous was safe. Yeah maybe Lukas wasn’t a good choice but in her mind, he is the most trustful person in her life. Hana talked to Mei because Mei was going to lend her her miraculous which Hana was going to use to confront Lukas about what the anon said (not to have Sirène attack her like you think). Wouldn’t you want the last thing from a parent/parental figure back too?
The other thing I want to explain that might help explain (EXPLAIN NOT EXCUSE) her actions is that, I have Borderline Personality Disorder and as much as I have tried to not give Hana those same traits, I failed at that. Hana exhibits traits of BPD, mainly Abandonment issues, Unstable sense of self, impulsiveness, extreme mood swings/emotional episodes, and unstable relationships among other symptoms. Me (and her in the AU) are getting therapy for it. Honestly there is so much stigma around this mental illness that I was terrified to include this but I want people to know where I’m coming from.
This is my side of everything. I don’t care if I get hate for this, like I said my mental health has already been destroyed by this anyways. I honestly have been having a hard time adjusting to college and this AU used to be a release for me but with everything going on I just, don’t know what to do anymore. Like I said, keep everything here. Obviously I can’t control what Anons send or don’t send but let it be know right here right now that I don’t approve of that shit or hating on anyone or their characters.

okAY so fyi this is unedited for now and i might come back to switch certain things up but oh my god in bon voyage there was a part where yoongi got a strawberry milkshake and i stg this was in my wip waaaay before that so when i saw the gif i think i wailed a bit bc he made it literally canon my friends!!!! hope u enjoy this guys im chwishfsdkfhl
Tumblr media
Yoongi just wanted a god damn strawberry milkshake to release work stress. not to be grabbed by the arm by a stranger begging him to role play as some perfect boyfriend or another.
There are a variety of absurd experiences Min Yoongi has been unfortunate enough to cross within his current lifetime.
Thinking back, there was that time Yoongi picked up the phone to his childhood best friend Kim Namjoon, who thought he was being robbed by foreigners on the side of the street at one in the afternoon, and frantically asked Yoongi to please come save him by the way its the sidewalk on 44th street bring a gun!
“What kind of fucking robbers let you make a phone call, dumbass?” Yoongi barked into the phone, pretty upset that his afternoon nap was interrupted by some nonsensical disturbance.
“Oh shit Yoongi, you’re probably right,” Namjoon exhales and stays on the phone with him though, as he tries to solve the mystery of the tourists who just wanted to let Namjoon know that he had dropped a couple bills. They were discreetly carrying knives because they were opening a wood carving stand a block over, Namjoon explained later. Yoongi was quite the unamused listener.
There was another time in his already awfully long life when Yoongi himself was found caught in the middle of a fight between a Minecraft gamer and a ballerina carrying a flower vase, but that was a long story where it finally ended with him being released from custody as soon as the police had determined his innocence.
Or that other glitch in his simulation of a life when he had to bring nine cats home with him after work. Yoongi never knew he had a cat allergy, but he learned it the hard way that night as he sneezed so hard for so long till he couldn’t hear anything out of his ears.
So when Yoongi is feeling something in the air tickle his nugget of a brain that he should skip his ritual milkshake tonight and head on home right away to avoid whatever this coming disturbance is, Yoongi does what Yoongi does best, and he ignores his intuition because who cares, what Yoongi wants is his McFreaking milkshake.
Everything goes smoothly. Yoongi successfully orders a milkshake at the bar. He successfully receives the right order. He successfully starts to drink the milkshake in the quiet serenity of two am on a Monday.
But then he fails to leave as soon as she comes in the door, the same girl who legitimately flings the entrance open like some wild animal and he is so horrified he can’t look away from this scene and makes the mistake of meeting your gaze.
The damage is done, however. He knows you’ve selected him as your prey among the barren tables save for one lady picking up fries togo and the waitress staring at you in fear.
Tumblr media
“Lady, please get off me,” he groans, pulling your fingers off his biceps as if they’re blood hungry leeches. His arm is free for maybe a second before your fingers fly back, grip stronger than before and this time Yoongi really can’t do much with just the one tired, exhausted hand; the one that isn’t holding the milkshake glass.
He’s whispering a string of curses and damnations at One Week Ago Yoongi for slacking with working out. Or any of his past Yoongis, really. He rests his head on the tips of his fingers, weighing down on his elbow angled onto the table.
“You don’t understand,” you wheeze dramatically, eyes round with terror. Uh, hello? I don’t care enough to understand, Yoongi mentally comments. “My parents, they-“
Sure, you might’ve been exaggerating everything a little, but what’s a little show and extravagance when your damn life is on the line? A matter of life and death knows no tranquility.
He looks at you half lidded; boredom and ‘are you really still talking to me Ican’tbelievetheaudacity’ washing over his face doing a whole awful lot to create a grave aura around him. You can physically see the deathly ash gray energy come off him in waves like something from an anime.
At this point, Yoongi’s thinking he might just ditch you, make a run for it to never see your crazy ass again and the idea is so tempting but instead, he responds. He’s not too sure why, although it’s probably ‘cause he’s paid an awful lot for this deliciously overpriced milkshake that has yet to be completely consumed. But the fact of the matter is he does respond, even thought you’re clearly not in the right state of mind and he really should be telling you to go home.
“Listen, they’re not gunna care if your boyfriend’s a bum. It’s your life anyways, why would they care?” Yoongi notices he’s got about another sip or two of his milkshake and then he can hightail it outta this joint and a certain spazz grabbing onto him.
You let go of his arm, thinking maybe you came off a little too strong and run your hands over your hair to pat down the flyaways contributing to the messy, crazed look.
“Now, I really absolutely must get going… miss,” Yoongi has finished his drink with a content sigh, a little disappointed that the experience was partially ruined with your improv tug of war, but content nonetheless. “Don’t worry, I’ll go ahead and take care of your water,” he reassures you dryly and stands up from the bar’s long legged chair, grabbing his expensive leather jacket. The best purchase he’s ever made in his life, he tends to overshare this fact to anything or anyone with two ears and legs, seeing as how he wears it everyday through wind, rain and the scorching heat.
Your eyes flash in one last lunge of desperation and your integrity flies out the window and disappears into the sky like a balloon. Floating away… peacefully, gone forever till all that’s left is your soulless body embarrassing yourself like this on a Monday at two am.
“Please,” you choke out one last time and sincerity taints your voice, everything you’ve depended on relying on this thin line of his consent.
There’s something about it that Yoongi finds himself hesitating for as his mind reels from the way your fingers grip the end of his jacket sleeve.
“I really, truly only need your help for a couple days. I-I’ll even pay you.”
Your eyes dart to the floor from his face with your final push, unable to face rejection one last time from help you so ridiculously need. His body halts, and with this, you take it as a sign for your fingers to relax and stop holding his like some child refusing to let go of their lollipop.
There’s one thing the weary should know, and it’s that one specific thing hits a chord with Min Yoongi that makes him who he is.
Tumblr media
“Shit.”
Hana looks up at you in what seemed like concern and a bit of ‘damn, you live like this?’ tainting her face. You keep going back and forth between looking down at your most recent message on your phone and up to her face, still contorted in confusion unable to face the reality that is your life right now.
You’re not okay, this can’t be happening — everything you had worked up for up until this point, only to be destroyed by your parents’ wrath would be the endgame for your life. You need to lie down and forget this day even happened.
“Are you, okay?” She can’t help but emphasize the ‘okay’ with leaning her head in a tilt.
“Hana,” you squeak out, hands pressed against your eyes till you see stars. It’s late, you’re braincell-less from such last minute studying and you’re absolutely, completely fucked. And not in the nice way you normally would want to be.
“My parents are coming over and want to meet Jungkook.”
Hana lets out a strangled gurgle of terror from the back of her throat as she runs her hands through her dark hair and crawls over to you to peer at your phone screen. Now that she knows you’re fucked, you want to throw your phone out the window and run away. Or just throw yourself out the window. You stand up from your sitting position on the floor and take deep breaths counting to ten and back again.
“Oh my god,” she whispers. “You’re screwed.”
You twist your face and tell her, “Thank you so very much for the vote of confidence! I’ll just have to remember that while trying to explain everything to my parents.”
Hana’s pained smile emits an apologetic vibe as she continues to voice her thoughts. “Damn. Seriously though… what’re you gonna do, I mean. You still have… two days?”
“I don’t even know anymore,” you wail, falling back to the floor and hoping it’ll somehow open up, and take your body into the recesses of the earthy ground. “Is a day or two even enough time for him to come back from that trip?”
“Wait, you mean you would have your parents actually meet him?” Hana looks over at you incredulously. “Like, we’re talking about your boyfriend Jeon Jungkook, right?”
Backtrack – So, okay, yes maybe you had a few flaws. One of them was the fact that you were maybe a little too prideful. As in it’d physically pain you for your parents to know that your boyfriend was a bum who did absolutely nothing.
You had lied to your parents from the very beginning, pulling off the scam with a few explanations here and there saying, “Oh, no he’s too shy. He won’t take pictures!” when your parents wanted to see who this guy was. The occasional “He can’t meet up with us because he’s studying for his very big exam haha you know how these studious nerds are sorry!”
You wince from her tone, speaking as if he’s a demon sent from hell, and start collecting strands of your hair to comb through with worry.
“I mean, if he were here I could play him up as the guy I made him out to be,” you mused. “They don’t even know what he looks like. Probably think he’s afraid of cameras, poor baby.”
Hana looks slightly revolted from your gently verbalized “uwu” and snaps her fingers to garner your attention back onto the matter at hand.
“Wait- I,” you sat back up, all the blood rushing this way and that causing a weird feeling to consume you and you see black for a good three seconds before it dissipates. “Don’t judge me for what I’m about to say.”
“Done,” Hana nods. “I live with you and judge you enough already.”
You look at her unimpressed, lips curled into an unamused smile.
“How about I get a fake boyfriend? Like, right now?”
Hana doesn’t even know where to begin she laughs because she thinks you’re literally joking but then stops when she knows you’re not. “Uh, you do realize it is two am, Y/N. Where are you planning on going to look for an accomplice to role play your perfect boyfriend?”
“Honestly speaking, I’ll probably have to go to a bar or something.” Just saying this out loud was enough to acknowledge that you yourself were not thinking straight.
“You’re just going to walk into a bar and pick up the first dude you lay eyes on is what you’re implying…” Hana trails off, as she begins to re-evaluate the situation. “Are you okay?”
“No,” you sigh, brushing off your jeans as you stand up. “But this is my only option.”
“Well, you could always tell the truth to your mom and dad. You don’t have to be so full of it, Y/N. And listen, you’re 20 going on 21… how much longer are you going to hide this from your parents? You’re literally an adult.”
You frown and start walking out of the room, grabbing a jacket before you head outside and to the car. “I’m not full of it,” you defend your poor self. “I just need my parents to think I’m living my best life with the best boyfriend so they don’t rub in how they were right all this time or whatever overprotective shit they wanna pull on me.”
Hana holds up her hands as an act of surrendering and picks up your phone from the floor to hand it to you. Before it’s passed off however, a pinging sounds and she calls out the notification.
“Your mom texted you to say–“ Hana squints from how dark your phone’s lighting is. “They’re actually planning on starting to drive over tonight and should make it here by tomorrow evening?”
You start to panic, countless thoughts crashing the calm of your mind like stormy waves as you start to assess your problem at hand. You need to find a fake boyfriend, said fake boyfriend must learn what must be learned about you and said fake boyfriend will need to do a good enough job to keep your parents away forever and hopefully this will work because you don’t know what you’ll do the next time your parents come to “check up” on you because they think something’s fishy with this hypothetical fake boyfriend.
You let out what sounds like something between a sob and a groan as you snatch the phone from Hana’s hands and run out of the house, debating between driving to the nearest diner or running away from home.
See, the problem with your parents were that they were overbearing to the point that they even hated the fact you decided to attend college out of state. Mind them, it was only one state away, but it did absolutely nothing to soothe their constant fretting over your wellbeing and life. You were fed up with the relentlessly strict parental control and went crazy in college – finally dating, drinking and partying – although it was still at a good minimum.
To expose to your parents that you were dating an undecided major who spent the money he could scrounge around for on video games was a one-way ticket to hell so in order to save face and keep up the façade that you in fact were living your best life possible, you dreamt up of the littlest, white lie.
Your boyfriend was a perfect boy. One grade above you, one his way to graduating as a summa cum laude. He had an internship and was already guaranteed a job after college as a biomedical engineering major. You painted the perfect picture so you could present yourself in the best way possible to your parents.
The way your hard work was about to be shattered by the way so many coincidences piled on top of each other was a bit frustrating to say the least. You weren’t sure how you kept this a secret for so long and frankly, how your parents didn’t doubt you from the start but now they believed him to be a camera shy, facetime shy boy that only spent his time studying.
You didn’t even want to start on the numerous occasions you and Jungkook had ended a night fighting because of this ridiculous situation, that sure, you put yourselves in. You weren’t sure why you did this, but of course it wasn’t because you were too prideful.
Tumblr media
Yoongi never lets money slip out of his hands. Call him frugal, call him thrifty, he doesn’t care. He just knows that if it’s worth the price, he’ll do it.
“Fine. I’ll do this. But I want cash and I want half of the end amount right now,” he knows he’s being demanding and it does look like you reek of eau de poor college student but with the request you’re making, he thinks it’s only fair.
You look teeny tiny and exhausted from the way you crumple your body on the seat next to him and it’s annoying how much work you’re going through because of a simple lie, but you can’t back out now. The way you’ve been explaining the situation to him is really making you sound a little crazy but hey, you’re only human and this isn’t the weirdest situation Yoongi has ever been in.
“How is this even going to work?” Yoongi looks at you as if you haven’t thought this far ahead. “Haven’t they seen his face? Is he even okay with this? Are you running a scam show? If this turns out to be a mess, I want no part of the repercussions.” He squints at you and crosses his arms, eyeing you suspiciously.
“I’m not stupid,” you roll your eyes and scrunch your face from irritation. “They’ve never seen pictures or anything of his face. I’m thankful my boyfriend doesn’t have social media, but I mean, even if he did my parents are technologically inept, anyways.”
“This is so extra, this is like, almost kind of idiotically stupid,” with a snort, Yoongi continues to doubt you. “I can’t believe I agreed to this. You better pay me the remaining amount as soon as this shit’s done. I’ve got things to do.”
“I’m sure you have so much stuff to do concerning your things,” you bite back and have to hold steady the urge to punch his weak looking noodle arm. Just keep thinking about how grateful you are that this sort of handsome spawn of the devil is agreeing to save your ass and livelihood.
He huffs and has the audacity to look offended, loosely crossing his arms across his chest. “Whatever, run this by me again.”
“Okay,” you sigh. You nearly teeter off the edge of the stool from sleepiness, an untouched glass of water in front of you and you watch the droplets trickle down the sides of the condensating cup. “My name is Y/N and yours is Jeon Jungkook. I’m 20 and you’re 21…”
You start to list off factual information and the details get a little blurry as they re-enter his mind because now it’s almost 3:20 in the morning and Yoongi just wanted a fucking milkshake but now it’s like he’s in college all over again, cramming all the notes and tidbits of information he can into his mind to purge it in five hours on the dreadful test. Even though Yoongi’s suffering, he starts noticing these things about you that’s definitely a little confusing to him and gets him a little worked up but in all the right ways.
He pays attention to the way when you laugh you move to cover your mouth with your hand, it’s kind of endearing. Sure, he’ll admit he thought you were pretty behind the air of desperation and super strange vibes you let out when you first marched into the door. Like, perhaps very pretty. He’s not sure but it might be something to do with the shape of your eyes and the pink of your lips. But the tendency you have to tilt your head when you smile is something that Yoongi starts noticing too and–
Yoongi catches himself thinking these thoughts that are so out of bounds and unnecessarily loud. It’s okay, he mentally argues. These are fake boyfriend feelings and it is late. I am exhausted, I don’t know what I am talking about.
And there you have it folks. Yoongi solves this problem of the Case of Weird Emotions with a simple answer. He’s just a really good fucking actor and can get into character so well that he starts thinking the way his character would. That’s all. And now Yoongi is mentally punching himself because he sounds really fucking weird. And fuck, he needs to stop cursing because he needs to be a well polished, dapper, perfect boyfriend.
He shudders and you see it, not because you’ve been looking at him but because he does it in a really obvious way that calls for attention in your peripheral vision.
“Are you alright?” You ask warily, eyeing him because what if he’s having a spasm attack holy shit?
Yoongi grunts with his absurdly deep voice and says, “Yeah, go on.”
“I wish we had more time,” you whine, rubbing your probably bloated face with sweater paws and something tickles Yoongi’s heart from the way you look and speak although he does his best to ignore it.
“It’s okay, I’ll remember this, I’m pretty sure… let’s just try and come up with a code word or something for me. Like, if I don’t know something I’ll say or do something and you’ll cover for me.”
You nod your head and for the first time that night it seems like you really smile and it’s cute, but not cute enough to swindle Min Yoongi’s heart. Of course not.
“Do you know how to crack your fingers?” You ask after a few moments of deep contemplation.
Yoongi suddenly looks small because he’s shoving his hands in between his thighs to cover them from the cold and you almost coo as he nods his head yes.
“Great,” you look away from his figure to calm yourself. “Just do that and then I’ll fill in. That’s the signal.”
“Does this mean we’re done now?” Yoongi’s voice has gotten raspy over the span of time you’ve spent with him because of how he spent most of it just listening to you and barely opened his mouth.
“I dunno,” you nervously gnaw on your lower lip, another habit Yoongi has picked up on fondly. Or not fondly, not at all… at least only fondly with fake boyfriend feelings. “I’m really not sure how this is going to turn out. Thankfully my friend is going to stay at a friend’s house to avoid more possible complications.”
“Alright then, give me a call tomorrow morning and I’ll get over to your place by two in the afternoon.”
You shake your head, “No, come earlier. We need as much time as possible to go over this. Remember? They’re arriving sometime that night.”
Yoongi groans from the revolting sentence he has just been forced to hear and he cries, “But I can’t! You’ve kept me up for this long evil lady, I should’ve been in bed falling asleep hours ago!”
“I’m sorry,” you feebly offer. “But I really need to nail in a lot more with you.”
Yoongi grumbles a wide variety of things under his breath comprised of but not limited to, “You’re lucky you’re cute”, “Fuck, I need a good ten hours of sleep to retain all this information, though” and “Damn it, I want my money”.
“Fine– 11 is the earliest I’ll be there. And are you sure you’re okay with giving me your freaking address? You’re going to let a stranger know where you live and you’re fine with it,” Yoongi lowers his tone towards the last bit in uncertainty.
“I’ll be fine because my roommate is a police force trainee who has armed me with a panic button along with pepper spray. You’ve been warned,” you wiggle your brows. “Plus you’re my fake boyfriend and you want the money. I’ll see you tomorrow at eleven.”
You both get up from your chairs, leaving cash tips and Yoongi’s expression changes into one of respect and newfound admiration.
“Duly noted,” he chuckles as he holds the door open for you to walk through, the brisk, autumnal air enveloping you.
Outside in the parking lot you head towards your car and see only a couple other vehicles, one of them being a motorcycle and you don’t think twice about it till Yoongi is waving goodbye to you as he walks in the direction of it.
“Wait,” you call out and Yoongi immediately halts, turning to face you with an expectant raise of his brow. “That’s your ride?” You point at the motorcycle.
He smirks and shoves his hands into his leather jacket as deep black as the galaxy and his hair swirls around from the wind above his twinkling eyes.
“Isn’t she beautiful?”
You groan, wondering if you have enough money to fork up however much it would cost to rent a car. You’re pretty sure you don’t, but if it’s for this boy, the best you could pick out on a quiet Monday morning at two, the cream of the crop, you’ve really got no other choice.
You just hope this cream of the crop has a license to drive a car.
The next morning you wake up at eight, sitting up in your plush bed as memories of last night flood your mind in horror. Restless sleep tightened your neck through the night, stress eating away at you and your ability to sleep peacefully.
You groan, peeking at your alarm clock and take a deep breath before you whip your hair out of your face and harden your resolve by sheer will. You pull of the covers and step out of your room, trailing for the kitchen in order to brew yourself some deeply needed coffee.
“Coffee first,” you mumble. Priorities.
Hana is sitting in the living room, a mug on the coffee table in front of her. She looks up as soon as she sees you enter from the short hallway.
“Mornin’ sunshine, there’s some coffee left for you,” she chippers cheerfully. “You got up pretty early. You’re meeting the man of the hour soon, right?”
“Meh, don’t remind me,” you grumble, shuffling into the kitchen and from the coffee machine, you see her kick her slippers off and finish the last of her homework. You pour the still hot liquid holy grail into your Totoro mug and start to mix in cream and sugar seeing as how you’re not as abhorrent as Hana with her love of black coffee.
“But damn, you were just a wreck last night,” Hana teases. “I can’t believe you really got someone to do something this crazy for a girl they just met.”
“It was the money,” you point out, sipping the first few tastes of coffee. It needs a bit more sugar. “I’m so fucken exhausted! Listen, I don’t even have that kind of money to pay him.” You can hear your stash of hidden cash for emergencies underneath your drawer already crying for help. This could qualify as an emergency, you doubtfully suppose.
Hana is still recovering from the surprise of hearing your insane plan worked, even if she found out last night. You remember how you entered the house, satisfied with how quote on quote smoothly the ordeal went even if you were about to be $600 short on money and stressfully sleep deprived the next morning. Hana walked out of her room with sleepy eyes and a bit of bedhead to you getting ready for bed so early in the morning, although she gained a bit of consciousness after hearing how your plan had indeed, succeeded.
Now that it’s the morning and your adrenaline rush had bled away and you’re in a clearer state of mind, doubt starts to trickle in and you are wondering what in hell you were thinking in the first place. You shake the thoughts away and focus on the task at hand.
“I’ll be getting out of the house soon,” Hana comments, starting to pack up whatever textbooks and notes she’ll need for the next day or two.
“You’re the amazingest,” you gratefully smile at her and try to convey your upmost sincerity. As best you could, at least.
“Yes,” she agrees mindlessly. “I am, aren’t I? I am so amazing—so amazing that I am literally leaving the apartment that I share with you for you and the stranger to bond and learn how to role play as lovers. It sounds crazy, I know, but here we are.”
Your smile fades away as you look at her in playful disbelief. “Go to your room, pack your granny underwear and your granny clothes, and leave this household!”
Hana scrunches her nose in distaste, “They’re not granny clothes! They’re retro! And thongs or whatever strip of fabric you claim are underwear are so uncomfortable, literally leavemealonegoodnightDevil!”
You laugh as she prances to her room to stuff her duffle bag full of clothes she’ll need in order to survive for the time she’s gone and you glance at the clock to see it read 8:30, and you go off to your room to get ready for the very. Incredibly. Extremely, long day ahead.
It is at ten that you have finished cleaning up your room, taken a quick shower and waved off Hana out of the home you two share. You walk back inside after seeing her depart safely promising to text you when she arrives, even though it’s the daytime and she’s just a good ten feet away, you never know what could happen. Even if she’s almost a police officer.
Which, speaking of, she has reminded you countlessly about, telling you to pass on the message that she will personally come to fuck him up if anything happens to you. You appease her with saying you will, but you sure as hell don’t plan on doing so.
Closing the door, you sigh deeply and it leaves you a little lightheaded as you lean your back against the door.
“Oh, shit.”
It hits you then that this is really happening. Like, your idiotic plan your brain thought up of that you thought was foolproof was really happening. There were so many holes that could expose you in a second and the thought of you being ousted in front of your parents tugged at your pride riddled mind.
The anxiety twitches your fingers as you pull up your phone and it leaves you staring at his message from last night.
yoongi: see u at 10:30
You forget he suddenly promised an earlier time at the last minute and you reckon you’ve got yourself about twenty or so minutes for him to show up at your door. It’s enough time for you to beat your face with makeup and put on some presentable clothes.
At 10:30 sharp he arrives at the door and it catches you by surprise because he doesn’t seem to be an advocate for timeliness. You tug down at your cropped sweater one last time before you open the door to see Yoongi in all his slightly bloated, freshly showered glory.
He looks a bit nervous, seeing as how he kept worrying over this very situation he should never have gotten himself into over the night not to mention what if you sent him the wrong address. Yoongi’s eyes flit from your face to the room behind you but he manages to keep his jittery
“Hey,” you sigh in relief. “Thank goodness you’re here. And thanks for coming so early.”
Yoongi loses a bit of the nervousness in his system and seems a bit more relaxed than he was when you first met him, probably because he’s gotten a better grip of his surroundings than last night, when he was completely hit with a curveball. In the face. At 500 miles per hour. In the form of you. HIs face loses the tension in the muscles and his lips take on a nonchalant smile. You also notice he’s wearing the same leather jacket as last night and you wonder if he has anything else available to wear.
“No worries,” he says in that gruff voice of his but he clears his throat quickly and yeah, you notice he’s still pretty high strung. This whole tribulation is probably a first for him too.
“Come on in,” you gesture inside, and make space for him to make through. Not that he needed much anyways being the tiny man he is.
“Alright,” he mutters, stepping into the apartment and slipping off his shoes. He doesn’t really pay attention to the apartment anymore but rather your outfit. You wearing sweatpants that still hug your legs and figure looks really good with the bit of skin exposed under the hem of your cropped Adidas sweater and Oh my God shut up, he scolds his train of thought.
It’s just that psychology of attraction at first sight, or whatever. Sure, it’s not his first time meeting you, sure, but you two have only recently met. Yoongi is certain he is a man of strong will. He would never let himself start feelings these things for someone who is already in a relationship.
He tears his gaze away from you before you can notice his burning stare and starts to run his eyes over the layout.
“Well,” you laugh strangely, trying to cover your skittishness. “This is where I live. I guess we can run over what we talked about last night over there on the couch.”
You point at the black sofa and Yoongi nods, walking over to sit down stiffly.
“Did you want something to drink?” You ask, noticing the way he stays pretty quiet. This won’t do. Your fake boyfriend is a great conversationalist.
“No, I’m fine, let’s just go over what we have to. I don’t wanna mess up…” Yoongi trails off and a hint of concern tinges his voice as you smile.
“Sounds good,” you agree.
“Okay, first things first,” you start reciting the basics as you are sat next to him. Yoongi does a really good job of staying on task at first, he swears. He’s listening intently but all of a sudden he’s thinking about how sweet and pretty your voice is and next thing he knows he’s thinking about how hard it is to just even meet your gaze, because your eyes are just such a wonderful outlet of all your emotions it’s really hard to meet them and not just go on and dive into the pool that is you and then—
“We might have to gel your hair back,” you muse softly and Yoongi is shaken out of his schoolboy crush-like trance.
“Fuck no. No,” Yoongi is firm with his decision, holding his hand out to emphasize his stance. “The forehead stays covered.”
You can’t help but let out a laugh as you cover your mouth with your hand and say, “Fine.”
Yoongi notices once again how you have a habit of doing that when laughing and he hates how it’s pretty adorable.
“How did you get here, anyways?” You ask suddenly. “Not with your bike, I hope…?”
Yoongi grins at you and you notice that he’s one of those gummy grinners and it does a little something to you but you avoid it at all costs and swallow it down.
“I Ubered here,” he said simply. “I figured I could say my car’s in the shop if your parents ask.”
You widen your eyes and nod in approval. “Brilliant! That’s really good Yoongi, thank God I don’t have to pay for a rent a car.”
“Speaking of payment,” Yoongi is reminded of your debt to him at the passing mention of money but is glowing from your praise. “Need I say more? Don’t worry about the Uber fee, I won’t be holding those against you, call it service.”
“How kind of you,” you grimace, hearing the cries of your emergency money once more, as you tell him to stay put. “I’ll be right back with half of it.”
When you count out 300 and carefully tuck the rest away, you turn around to walk out only to see Yoongi peering in your door, arms crossed and looking quite interested.
You jump at the sudden intrusion-like non-intrusion and scowl, asking, “What are you doing here? You scared me shitless and you’re very lucky I didn’t shriek.”
He shrugged, tousling his dark hair from his eyes and replied, “If I’m gonna be your fake boyfriend, I should know what your room looks like. As your fake boyfriend, of course.”
You groan and tell him, “Get a good, quick look around, because here’s your money and now we’re leaving.” You slap the wad of cash onto his unsuspecting palm and push his shoulders out the door.
“I know you kind of know me because of all the information I might’ve been burning into your mind the past 24 hours about yours truly, but I barely know a thing about you and we’re really acquaintences at best, still.”
Yoongi lets you lead him out of the hall into the living room and with a quick look at your lockscreen, you see that it’s still only 11:14. He stuffs the money in the back pocket of his jeans, which fit him quite nicely around the thigh area, if you may say so yourself.
“Fine,” he mutters and you barely catch it with your already dull hearing.
“What’s fine?” You ask, sitting down on the sofa as he takes a seat as well.
“I said, fine. What do you wanna know about me?” He asks, finding interest in the boring coffee table.
“Uh,” you trail off, unprepared for this kind of a question. “Wait, do I want to know more about you? I should be thinking of you as my boyfriend Jungkook, putting history and information behind you would make it too easy for me to differentiate…”
Yoongi rolls his eyes with a condescending sigh that you somehow know isn’t very genuine. “Just ask three things about me, so we’re not complete strangers,” he offers a compromising deal.
You let it sit with you for a second. If you made a slip up would you be able to recover? It was already hard enough, calling him Yoongi—already so hard enough that it was weird to remind yourself you’d have to be calling him Jungkook in a few hours. Eh, screw it.
“Where do you work?” You ask your first question tentatively.
“I work as a part time server for now,” he replies as if it’s something of a bother. “At the barbecue place downtown.” You have a brief idea of where it is, having passed by it a few times while you were in the vicinity.
“Alright,” you huffed. “What’s your other part time?”
Yoongi looks a bit confused at first with the way you worded it, but he catches on quickly seeing as how he’s got a fast train of thought.
“Oh, yeah. You remember my bike? I wanna go into autotech service. Or something like that, like engineering,” he vocalizes his thoughts and grows a bit red.
“That’s really awesome,” you smile at him and he grows comforted by the idea of you approving his passion. Although he shouldn’t be so—
“Do you have a girlfriend?” This question takes you back by surprise too, and you swear it was a slip of your tongue.
“I—“ Yoongi wasn’t ready, didn’t even think you were one bit interested in his love life but he answers directly. “No.”
For some reason you like hearing that answer, something like satisfaction burns at your tongue and heart and you don’t understand why when you have a perfectly cute boyfriend named Jeon Jungkook (the real one) you can call yours.
“Sorry, I didn’t know where that came from,” you giggle nervously.
Yoongi brushes it off and breathes evenly. He’s not sure why he’s worked up uncomfortably like this and he wants to skip to the part where this is all over and he goes back to moping around, living out his normal, daily routine.
We are acquaintances, he keeps reminding himself.
You two end up talking about yourselves a bit more, because pictures of your dog reminds him of his dog and from there the conversation flows a little too perfectly because now you’re intrigued by the mystery that is Min Yoongi and you want to know more and everything about him. This goes on for the next six hours and it’s filled with so much talking and laughing and you’ve even cooked up lunch because oh my goodness you found ingredients to make pancakes.
Then dawn rolls around as if it’s only been a mere thirty minutes and to be honest, it feels likes you know Min Yoongi more than your own boyfriend Jeon Jungkook.
You shake that last thought off, startled from the way you so abruptly stated that. Internally, of course.
Yoongi’s barely opened his mouth to ask you another question when-
The doorbell rings and it echoes throughout the inside of your home and holy shit it feels so intimidating and loud and Yoongi just isn’t ready, but can’t imagine how you’re feeling right now if he’s this scared of what’s to come.
You glance at him almost as if you’re seeking refuge in someone’s comfort so he grits his teeth a bit because between the two of you, he realizes he’s got to stay the rock.
Yoongi narrows his eyes until they resemble somewhat to a feline’s. He’s the rock.
And not just in the Dwayne Johnson sort of way.

New7942 SmartTop, SnowdoniaSurf, United Kingdom, 6 hours ago What I find repulsive about Meghan Markle and Harry is that they use the Royal muscle with legal and the like to BULLY or “STRONG ARM” others. It is repulsive because they are not even using their own money. Funny Meghan Markle immediately started pushing “her weight around” but she is nothing more than a “TAKER” from the royal legal powers that be. New31291 Mythoughtsonthings, East Coast, United States, 6 hours ago Tourists never actually see much of the RF. I can’t imagine how much more money England would make if you got rid of the RF, opened up much more of Buckingham Palace and Windsor and other palaces. Keep the guard and the pomp and circumstance, but why taxpayers are funding these celebrity “royals” is beyond me. New22276 Janet, UK, United Kingdom, 6 hours ago She and Harry will regret not seeing him they had two years to meet him. I’m sorry, but I don’t get the fascination. Americans shouldn’t become royalty. We abhor to class system. Always have and always will! New28204 sweetsexything, vancouver, Canada, 5 hours ago You guys are right! The Queen cannot decide Harry’s bride. However, the British can decide which Royal Family needs to be supported. Harry and Meghan (who shows up at least £2k for an event) need to fund themselves. But this is only a dream. Queen Elizabeth has been supporting non significant royal family members such as the KENTS. And it is ridiculous to hear that someone suggested, support Doria and Mr. Markle living and house expenses. I hope the British is not supporting Doria. But…. but… maybe RF is already supporting her since she is not working anymore. Ridiculous!!! Sleeping Britain. New9208 Pgtips2018, Ashford, United Kingdom, 5 hours ago Rubbish! New12750 JR, San Francisco, 5 hours ago Great point, @Mythoughtonthings - whenever I’ve spent time in England it hasn’t been to “hopefully see the Royals”. Castles, museums, parks, cities, restaurants, etc will continue to exist with or without the RF, and I would definitely continue to visit. Over time, I’ve come to agree with folks who think that the Queen’s reign would be a good point at which to bring down the curtain on the RF, a fitting finale. What on earth does all those mean? New1682 UhOhGameOver888, Babylon, United States, 3 hours ago Bingofan, people support the Queen, that is who they support. She embodies the monarchy and that is who they are supporting in those polls. Charles on the other hand is without question despised widely and deeply. Go to YouGov . co . uk and look up Charles aggregated rating for public approval per many, many YouGOvv polls. It is -7. That’s right MINUS Seven! And Camilla’s is -20. MINUS Seven and MINUS 20 is ABYSMAL. Big Ears may go for broke and force through his coronation after HM passes but he won’t be on the Throne long. 24 August 2020: 11% of UK food is now bought online. John Lewis will go online first. Loyalty cards.
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter - it looks at what's happening in the internet/digital world and how it's relevant to the Co-op, to retail businesses, and most importantly to people, communities and society. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!

11% of UK food is now bought online
Tesco is hiring 16,000 staff in its online business: 10,000 to pick customer orders from shelves and 3,000 delivery drivers. Many of them will be “lockdown temps” already working for the company. This is Tesco’s answer to one of the big lockdown questions for retailers: would shoppers return to the shops as lockdowns ease, or would they stick with online shopping?
💥 Why this matters: the shift to online has been very big and very fast but hasn’t snapped back at the same speed as lockdowns started easing. This suggests that some shopping activity formerly done in store may have permanently shifted online. If so, the virus accelerated online shopping’s share of spend by years.
Three quarters of UK does grocery shopping online: “Waitrose polled 2,000 people across the UK and found that 77% now do at least some of their grocery shopping online, compared with 61% the year before”. If that’s how many people do *some* of their shopping online, how much of total spend is now online? The Office for National Statistics says:
“In July 2020, retail sales volumes increased by 3.6% when compared with June, and are 3.0% above pre-pandemic levels in February 2020. [...] Online retail sales fell by 7.0% in July when compared with June, but the strong growth experienced over the pandemic has meant that sales are still 50.4% higher than February’s pre-pandemic levels.”
Ocado thinks the shift to online is permanent, but that’s their business so they would say that! Research company Retail Economics thinks that “almost half of consumers feel that the pandemic will have a permanent effect on the way they shop” (link to that BBC story because Retail Economics’s site is paywalled).

Walmart sales up 6% but most of that is from online sales, which doubled.
“We expect John Lewis to be a 60% online retailer”
John Lewis plans to reinvent itself for an era of online, and Chair Sharon White sent a plan to partners (staff) in the group. “We expect John Lewis to be a 60% online retailer, from 40% pre-Covid-19; and Waitrose to rise above 20%, from 5%.”
One interesting part is a new “rental/resale/recycle” option for furniture in which furniture can be rented until purchased, or rented and then returned:
“The scheme means shoppers can use the service to try before they buy - payments stop if they reach the original purchase price before the end of the hire period, and they can keep the item or have it collected. After two 12-month rental periods the items will have been paid for outright.”
The other interesting bit is:
“Private rented housing: As we repurpose and potentially reduce our shop estate, we want to put excess space to good social use. We are exploring with third parties the concept of new mixed-use affordable housing.”
Loyalty cards, membership programmes and delivery costs
Tesco plans to add free grocery delivery to its Clubcard Plus service. Responding to Amazon including free grocery delivery in Prime for some customers, CEO Dave Lewis said:
“I understand the move [from Amazon]. The idea of Prime is very similar to where we are in Clubcard Plus, in terms of bringing a whole bunch of benefits together. So an opportunity into the future for us is to think about how we put delivery into Clubcard Plus. That’s always been the direction of travel.”
Elsewhere in retail, Walmart’s Prime-like membership programme Walmart+ is delayed.
💥 Why this matters: supermarkets are working out how they might recoup delivery costs. One logical end point might be the Costco model, in which the retailer sells goods at 0% markup but finds its margin in membership fees. A big risk is that if the retailer bundles too much or the wrong things into a membership whose fees keep increasing, it starts to look like poor value for money.
UK government and exam results: move fast and break things
The exams results controversy is an early and obvious example of what “life under the algorithm” would be like. Often painful. The problem they were trying to fix (standardised grades that made sense from one year to the next) ended up being a smaller problem than the algorithmic fix (moderating grades downward in a way that ended up disadvantaging pupils from poorer areas). The algorithm’s decisions looked unfair and capricious. The eventual fix was to revoke the algorithm.
Rachel Coldicutt’s piece is good on how the current UK government likes to dismantle things and move faster. It’s not clear that the answer is governance, in that Ofqual no doubt had endless governance process and documentation. Maybe the answer is making sure leaders are empowered to form teams that can achieve the desired outcomes, and held accountable.
💥 Why this matters: it would be good if algorithms were more open and opportunities for redress clearer. “Getting rid of the algorithm is v welcome, but not enough.”

Tautai First Friday Talks with Albert Wendt, Jasmine Togo-Brisby & perfomance by Sema
Tumblr media
As part of my daughter’s social studies class – they are required to do a presentation entitled “origins of me”.  On Wednesday morning she says “Mumma...what’s the quickest and easiest way to describe what a south sea islander is?”
I paused for a bit…this hurt...this is the question I have been trying to find the answer to my whole life…
I said “unfortunately baby, there is no easy way, but this is what makes us so special ey?”
She said “I guess…But I don’t want to tell them mum…not yet…Can I just say that we are from Australia and Vanuatu?”
I said “ok, and when you feel strong again, maybe on your next project then you can tell them about us ok?” She agreed and went back to writing.
She has never asked this before, you see my daughter knows who she is, she will proudly say she is a South Sea Islander the Australian born descendants of the pacific slave trade…but she also knows from her brief life experience that it doesn’t end there, that her identity will trigger an onslaught of questions that at the age of 13…at her new high school, she just doesn’t have the strength for… this week she doesn’t want to stand up in front of her peers and teachers and be the one to educate them on the pacific slave trade, to answer all their questions and have them probe in and out of our families history….and that’s ok cause sometimes at the age of 36 I don’t have the strength to do that either, it’s painful…it’s intrusive...it wears you down and sometimes you just can’t.
I often get asked in interviews “when did you first discover that you were a south sea islander?”….and I can’t help but wonder…do other artists get asked such stupid questions?  Do Samoan artists get asked “when did you first discover that you were Samoan??
I’ve tried to pinpoint a time… a distinct moment of enlightenment…but truth is I always knew I was South Sea.…I don’t ever remember not being south sea…some of my earliest memories are of my mum and my family calling us little south sea gals.  Perhaps I didn’t know exactly what it meant… but I knew it meant we were islanders…I knew it had something to do with the sugarcane plantations, and the pride that my uncles took in their cane knives. I knew that being south sea meant that we had great physical strength, whenever I would pick something up that apparently I shouldn’t have the be able to...my mum would sing out ey look at this proppa south sea breed, too strong!! I knew that our hair was propa south sea, and that I had to have ‘hand me down shoes’ from my uncles it was cause my feet were ‘propa south sea’.
We ALWAYS knew we were south sea…Me and my 3 big sisters were born in a tiny town of northern NSW, we lived in the bush and were pretty isolated from the world, no running water, self-sufficient, all that stuff.  So I was quite sheltered, I didn’t really know we were different until my first day of school.
I was following my big sisters footsteps in the puddles as we walked through the courtyard of the school grounds, the bell was sounding for us to go to class.  I noticed a group of girls perched under a building who appear to be looking at us, as we cross their path they began to call out ‘black kanakas! black kanakas!’….my sisters pace picked up and I had to run to keep up with her, we arrived at the toilets and she locked herself in a cubicle.  I was scared, I started crying, I didn’t say anything, I just waited.  The door unlocked, my sister appeared, tears streaming down her face.…“don’t you ever let them see you cry! Never!! Do you hear me??!!... I was 5, she was 7…
Kanaka or kanak the word taken from the islands used by the traders, plantation owners and authorities, in such a derogative manner that it became a synonym for nigger, and both words were used liberally throughout newspapers and documents in Australia when discussing us…’the kanaka problem’, over time we have reclaimed kanaka as our word once again and proudly use it within our communities.
I knew I was South Sea because people referred to me as such, but as a child I didn’t really grasp what this meant….not wholly not until I was about 8 years old.  We moved from the little racist town of NSW up to far nth QLD, we went to school with all our cuzzies, it was amazing, finally with our people, I’d estimate at least 75% of my school was indigenous population, it was deadly!
This was home, or at least it was the closest thing to it, yet I still had a very real sense that we did not belong. Most of my South Sea Island cousins are also of Aboriginal Australian heritage and they were able to tap into those roots to ground themselves and their sense of identity within Australia.  For me however, I didn’t have this grounding, and while, as kids, we never perceived or treated each other any different, there were constant reminders that me and my sisters were different. After school one day my cousin Izzy convinced me to an afterschool program with him.  As I entered the room the auntie running the program said “‘oh no, sorry bub, you can’t stay here, I know your mum, you’re south sea, you’re not murrie’, this is just for indigenous kids.”  I was so ashamed that I ran home and didn’t even say goodbye to my cousins.
My mum and aunties would always go into battle for us against the teachers, but it still hurt to be rejected by the community that I felt most at home with. Not black enough to be black, but not white either. Something else, something other. Other to the Other even. An in-between. The non-Australian Australian. The alien Australian. That is how I felt as a South Sea child in Australia.
That day when my mum returned from work, I asked her what exactly does it mean to be south sea…who are we? And why aren’t we indigenous?   You see, now that I am a mother, I understand the responsibility of dispensing this knowledge, that we have to guide and release the transferal of information with great care, our mummas know that our inheritance can be traumatic.  Postmemory’ is very real for our community it is connected to the past and not actually mediated by recall but by imaginative investment, projection, and creation…our identity was formed on these events it happened in the past, but their effects continue into the present and into the future.
My mum told me everything…at least it was everything that she knew…. the story of her great grandparents, that granny was 8 years old collecting shells on the beach of Ambae when a schooner arrived and abducted her, that she was possibly taken to New Caledonia where she was sold, then taken to Sydney where she was sold again to a wealthy family, where she was raised and groomed to be their servant.  Our great grandfather didn’t know how old he was, but he was abducted that same year 1899 from Santo Island and sold to the same family as granny and that’s how they met and fell in love and that’s how our Togo family began.  She told me that our family is still searching for missing pieces of our story, and there is a lot that we don’t know.
”our people were slaves’ bub! They were stolen and forced to work here on the sugarcane and in rich people houses"
I must have asked my mother a hundred questions that day, because the next day she arrived home from work and handed me this book…
”This is who we are!! …This is where we come from!!" She turned the book over and drew her finger along the map retracing her grandparents’ journey.   “You see we are not from this land…we were used for it”
I always wanted to know what that felt like…to belong to a land …to be indigenous to Australia…indigenous to anywhere really…to an 8 year old me that seemed much easier.  I wanted to be real…I craved to know our culture… our island customs, I was ashamed, to not fit into an essentialist ideal of what an islander is.  Our language, our art forms, our culture - stolen from us. Over the years I riffled through the pages of this book…images foreign to me, this is not what our lives look like.  No pictures of plantations, no images that resinate with me and what I know to be south sea. Over the years I have learnt to embrace our fractured culture and express it through my practice.  In an effort to re-claim or restore what was taken, my family often go back to Vanuatu and sit in the villages where they will learn how to make the sand drawings, weavings and learn the native language Bislama.
But our culture was created in in the holds of slave ships…that’s where it all started, down there...that’s our first place of transformation, many nations coming together in the belly of the ship, the initial space of rupture away from everything we had ever known.  We were born out of the ocean… and not in the poetic sense, not in the way that separates and connects in the way that the ocean was our prison, it held us there in those ships, there was no escape, the ocean was our graveyard.
The plantations are the reason for our existence, the homes of the wealthy, to serve them, to clear and toil the lands for this sweet substance that they desire so much. This is where we were born…this is where we died.   Today mass unmarked graves remain scattered across plantations throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales. Often dug up by accident, each discovery reopens wounds from a past that most Australians would rather forget. Upon arrival in Australia SSI’s faced poor living conditions. Lack of immunity to Western illnesses and harsh corporeal punishments dealt out by plantation owners lead to high mortality rates. With strong racial segregation heavily enforced in Australia during that time, respectful burial within city cemeteries was out of the question so plantation owners opted to dig large burial pits on the outskirts of their sugarcane.
I remember reading an interview a few years ago which still haunts me today, and often keeps me up at night. An interview conducted in 1978, The son of a QLD sailor in was retelling his mother’s accounts of plantation life for South Sea Islanders…He said “The whites treated them something shocking – they died of dysentery, poor food and all sorts of things. They died of a broken heart a lot of them did. Truly they did. And when they died, they just buried them in the cane field – they were just fertiliser. That’s what they were- that’s how it was
”WE were just fertiliser to them”
My community back home work incredibly hard searching council documents for names and making headstone for unmarked graves, this is imperative to us, to resect and honour our ancestors in the smallest possible way we can, to salvage, to reconcile the past and to help our community heal.
Our old people would never use the word sugar…because the substance was way more than just that, they wouldn’t say ‘pass the sugar’ – they would say - Passem hart work – ‘pass the hard work’…as though to use the word sugar would be to  dishonour our people.
Tumblr media
A year ago I was invited to contribute to an episode of the television program ‘Heritage Rescue’, this particular episode was based on an old ship wreckage at Port Chalmers near Dunedin, the ‘Don Juan’ which was involved in the Pacific Slave Trade and described as a 'Spanish slaver and pirate’ Its voyages took it from Sweden to South America and across the Pacific, before it found its final resting place in Otago Harbour in 1900.  It has been lying in a few feet of water ever since, slowly disappearing into the mud.
They tv program wanted my perspective as a descendant of the Pacific Slave Trade, as The Don Juan was the very first pacific slave trade Ship to arrive in QLD in 1863… 73 of our people were on board, one had passed away on the journey, they were shackled then forced to walk from Brisbane port to Beaudesert over 100 kilometres away, where Captain Towns plot of land awaited their arrival.  Towns had planned to establish one of the first qld cotton plantations, the cotton industry failed.  But the labour of our people was successful and so began the Pacific Slave Trade to QLD.   The Don Juan was the beginning…never in my life did I ever think that this ship would still exist, nor that I would be able to go see it and share space with it…with the ship that started my people.
I arrived on set at the Port Chalmers Maritime museum and was introduced to some of the crew and the 3 curators of the museum.  The curators were 3 older migaloo/palangi men, they were very enthusiastic about the ship and their collection of objects retrieved from it.  Their energy was excited, I could see they had taken a liking to the attention they were receiving from the film crew and my arrival bought a set off fresh new ears to hear all their stories.  They told me their memories of the Don Juan, as young boys they would swim in the bay, they would climb up the ribs of the ship and dive into the ocean.   The wreck was a childhood playground to all in the region.
They told me about how there used to be hundreds of sets of shackles salvaged off the ship but keen collectors throughout the region had snapped them up as soon as they were discovered.  They had a wealth of knowledge on the ship, and its captains the pirates, whom they seemed to admire and almost romanticise their lives, they didn’t really ask me who I was and that was ok with me. Eventually I was ushered into the next room by the producer for my interview… curators and crew looking on…
“So Jasmine you identify as a 4th generation ASSI can you tell us what that means what is a south sea islander?”
I give her the spiel… Between 1847 and 1904 more than 62,000 documented and many more undocumented predominantly Melanesian peoples were abducted and/or coerced from their homes locked in ships and sent to Australia and enslaved on sugarcane plantations and in wealthy aristocratic homes.   We are the Australian born descendants of the pacific slave trade, on the 25 August 1994, the Commonwealth Government officially recognised Australian South Sea Islanders as a unique cultural group with its own history and culture. The government acknowledged the injustices of the indentured labour system and the discrimination suffered by South Sea Islanders and their descendants.
The interviewer blinks…
Sometimes in an effort to help try and explain our complex identity– I’ve resorted to comparing Australian South Sea Islander culture to that of African Americans due to their vast visibility and understanding of their position as a slave Diasporas.… So you know how African Americans have their own unique culture & identity? Built from the foundation of slavery, segregation, displacement, oppression etc.…well Australian South Sea Islanders are similar, except the start of our slave trade was at the end of their slave trade... See worldwide supplies of sugar and cotton were impacted dramatically as the U.S civil war dragged on.  New areas of production entered these lucrative markets, particularly in the pacific and plantation agriculture grew substantially in areas such as Australia, Fiji and Hawaii. The trade was hidden under the guise of policy’s and terms like blackbirding and indenture labour. Also Australia had learnt a thing or 2 off the Americans, they didn’t want to be stuck with all these brown bodies in their new country, there was a lot of fear and outrage of the ‘darkening of the colony’.
So by 1901 the sugar industry was thriving, for more than 50 years the pacific was a highway to slave traders and it had served them well.  The new Commonwealth Government implemented the controversial ‘White Australia policy’ and established the Pacific Islander Labourers Act 1901 ordering the repatriation of South Sea Islanders to their home islands, but they didn’t always make it to their home land, and some not even to land, some met there fate by the way of mass executions out at sea.   This was the largest legislated mass deportation in Australian history, and also the most scandalous.   So basically what I’m saying is that racism that ended slavery in Australia.
The interviewer proceeded to ask questions, piercing in and out of my family history, questions about the family who owned my family, things I was not prepared to talk about, and certainly not on film, our stories are personal and painful, they are our inheritance, you can’t just take that from us.
The interview eventually concluded and we walked back out into the museum, they wanted some footage of me standing looking at the shackles…the shackles which held our people…They called them manacles - every time I called them shackles someone tried to correct me and called them manacles…I guess it’s a bit more palatable than slave shackles.
I’d been consciously dodging the vitrine holding the shackles all morning, I wasn’t ready…I don’t think I would ever be ready.  I looked down into the glass cabinet, I just stared in…I had no idea what I was feeling…I kept reading the museum label. “Shackles recovered from the hulk of Don Juan when she was broken up in 1902.  She was built in gavle, Sweden, in 1857, as the DANIEL EELFSTRAND PEHRSSON” I read this label over and over again, I don’t know why, I think I was trying to make sense of it, I think I was looking for us, some acknowledgement of why these shackles were on that ship in the first place.  But we weren’t there… I thought of the arms which had been held by them, how many lives had been restrained by this rusty chain…what happened to them? Did they make it home? I needed to get out of the museum!
The crew finally called it a wrap and they invited me go to lunch with them, as I was accepting their offer, one of the curators of the museum yelled out from across the room…across the shackles vitrine….“DON’T FEED THE SLAVE! Ha! With a smug, proud look on his face, the room went quiet, people put their heads down…no one said anything.
In my mind I could hear my big sister “DO NOT CRY!! DON’T EVER LET THEM SEE YOU CRY!!! Yet my stomach had a familiar calm feeling…I had felt this before, but not in this way, this was my granny…she only appears when she really needs to, and today she stepped in so I wouldn’t have to face them on my own.  She travelled from my stomach up oesophagus and from my mouth she spoke her words... “I forgive you! ….I realise your behaviour is generational and all that I can hope is that this shit dies out with you all!!” I gathered my things and I walked out.
That afternoon I went to the ocean in search of the Don Juan...well what was left of it.  I stared at it’s lifeless  remnants lying in the mud.  It kind of felt like the way you might feel  if you had been holding a grudge on someone your whole life and now they are on their deathbed, powerless and you have the revelation that your resentment to that person was to to your own detriment….at least I think that’s how I felt. I dunno. A year later and I’m still trying to process this, ALL of this…
Next month I will start my 3 month residency in Dunedin, I’ll be able to spend time and space with both the museums collection and the ship and hopefully come to terms with it.  In the lead up to the media release of the residency I have been asked what my intentions are, I catch myself saying that “I’ll be researching the Don Juan, retracing its steps, responding to the site etc” Which is so detached, so far removed from what it is that I’ll actually be doing. I’m NOT going to Dunedin to research and respond! I’m going down there to scream!…and to cry, to mourn for our people, to search for any trace of our existence, to use my voice for those who couldn’t use theirs…and then I will make something, I will create from our loss, something that they can’t take away or deny…to give us a place to exist in, if even just for this moment.
Tumblr media
This year will mark 25years of assi recognition from the commonwealth government, on the 25th August every year we celebrate our resilience, we honour and commemorate our ancestors.  I’d like to ask you all to note the 25th of August in your calendars, and include Australian South Sea Islanders within the broader Pasifika dialogue.

Ethiopian Airlines plane to Nairobi crashes with 157 on board
An Ethiopian Airlines plane which crashed killing 149 passengers and eight crew just minutes after take-off lost and gained speed dramatically in the final seconds, it has emerged.
The plane heading to Nairobi left Ethiopia this morning but came down within six minutes – 37 miles from Addis Ababa International Airport.
Within the first few minutes after take-off the plane’s vertical speed, the rate of climb or descent, varied from 2,624 feet per minute to -1216.
According to Swedish flight-tracking website flightradar24 the flight ‘had unstable vertical speed’ shortly after take off.
Aviation experts describe this as extremely unusual because once a plane has taken off the vertical speed should rise or remain stable.
Aviation expert Sally Gethin said this may indicate the aircraft stalled.
She said: ‘It’s the rate of climb or descent – the most critical phases of flight. Instability at that point e.g. too slow – could destabilise the aircraft, potentially risking stalling and other hazardous consequences. It might indicate the pilots had difficulty controlling the climb/ascent.’
An experienced pilot told MailOnline the activity was highly unusual.
The graphic shows how the plane fluctuated it’s vertical speed in the minute before it crashed 60kms from the airport

Family members of the victims involved in a plane crash react at Addis Ababa international airport Sunday, hours after their loves ones took off
He said: ‘A positive number indicates the aircraft is going up. After takeoff you would expect all these numbers to be positive as the aircraft climbed away from the ground, or zero if they are flying level. The small amount of data released so far indicates that after only one minute or so of the flight this aircraft started a descent at a rate of up to 1920 feet per minute down. If the data is correct that is extremely unusual.
‘The data then shows the aircraft going up and down until the data stops. That is why some people are referring to unstable vertical speed. You would not expect a descent unless you were immediately returning, and if that was the case you wouldn’t then expect the aircraft to climb again. After takeoff aircraft either climb or fly level for a period then climb again.’
Boeing said it was ‘deeply saddened’ by news of the crash and would sent technical experts to Ethiopia to help investigate the crash.
Seven British nationals were onboard the plane at the time, while there were eighteen Canadians, eight Americans and 32 Kenyan nationals.
As many as 50 delegates are believed to have been on the plane heading to the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, which begins tomorrow.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed there were UN staff on board, offering his ‘heartfelt condolences’ to their families.
The plane came down near Bishoftu, Ethiopia, 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of the capital. A witness told the BBC it took rescuers until 11am to arrive.
Witness Bekele Gutema said: ‘The blast and the fire were so strong that we couldn’t get near it. Everything is burnt down.’
Speaking at a press conference CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Tewolde Gebremariam said the captain of the crashed plane had told controllers at Bole airport that he was having difficulty and wanted to return – and had been given clearance.

The plane, a 737 MAX 8, is believed to be a new addition to the EA fleet having been delivered in July last year – and is the same model as the Lion Air plane which crashed in Indonesia in October.
Boeing issued a safety warning last November about its new 737 Max jets which could have a fault that causes them to nose-dive. The MAX-8 planes were launched in 2016 and are used by major airlines all around the world.
While it remains unclear what happened onboard, there was a an urgent investigation in Indonesia in November 2018 – calling for all MAX jets to be inspected after the crash.
The state-owned Ethiopian Airlines calls itself Africa’s largest carrier and has ambitions of becoming the gateway to the continent.
Relatives in Nairobi have said they have not been told anything – and that they only heard about the crash on Facebook – despite being at the airport waiting for loved ones.
Wendy Otieno told Reuters: ‘We’re just waiting for my mum. We’re just hoping she took a different flight or was delayed. She’s not picking up her phone.’
Peter Kimani told AFP as he sat in the arrivals lounge he was waiting for his sister who had been on a mission to the Congo as a nurse.
‘I am still hoping that all is fine, because I have been waiting for my sister since morning and we have not been told anything,’ he said.
A spokesman for the airline confirmed the plane had crashed while heading from Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. It was due to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at around 10.25am.
The airline’s statement said: ‘At this time search and rescue operations are in progress and we have no information about survivors or any possible casualties.’
One woman was seen in tears this morning as she waited for news of her fiancé.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta offered his ‘prayers’ to all the families and associates of those on board the plane.
‘We are saddened by the news of an Ethiopian Airlines passenger aircraft that is reported to have crashed 6 minutes after takeoff en route to Kenya,’ he wrote on Twitter.
Max Kingsley-Jones, group editor of online news site Flight Global, said Ethiopian Airlines has a ‘great reputation’ in the aviation world.
Speaking to the BBC, he said: ‘Ethiopian [Airlines] is really the jewel in the crown for Africa’s airlines. In fact, international airlines across the world look up to Ethiopian.
‘It’s got a fantastic network, it’s got a great reputation and it has a fleet to go with that operation.
‘It operates long-haul aircraft, all the latest technology… and then on short-haul it’s got [Boeing] 737s.’
Flights out of Addis Ababa were delayed or cancelled on Sunday morning, it has been reported.

Boeing 737 Max jets investigated after Indonesia plane crash:
Boeing issued a safety warning last November about its new 737 Max jets which could have a fault that causes them to nose-dive.
The special bulletin sent to operators was about a sensor problem flagged by Indonesian safety officials investigating the crash of a Lion Air 737 that killed 189 people just a week before the memo was sent.
Since the 737 Max was unveiled in 2017, 350 of the jets have been bought, with around a further future 4,761 orders placed.
More than 40 airlines around the world use the 737 Max, which has four kinds in the fleet, numbered 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Airlines such as Norwegian Air, Air China, TUI, Air Canada, United Airlines, American Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Icelandair and FlyDubai.
The 8 series, which was involved in the crash in Indonesia, has been flying the longest of all the Maxes.
Boeing said in November that local aviation officials believed pilots may have been given wrong information by the plane’s automated systems before the fatal crash.
An AOA sensor provides data about the angle at which wind is passing over the wings and tells pilots how much lift a plane is getting.
According to a technical log the Lion Air plane, which had only been in service a few months, suffered instrument problems the day before because of an ‘unreliable’ airspeed reading.
The MAX models  are relatively new but has already been investigated after problems reported. Pictured: Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 (stock image)
Minutes after takeoff the plane suddenly nose-dived hitting speeds of 600mph before slamming into the sea.
The warning issued today read: ‘The Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee has indicated that Lion Air flight 610 experienced erroneous input from one of its AOA (Angle of Attack) sensors.
‘Boeing issued an Operations Manual Bulletin (OMB) directing operators to existing flight crew procedures to address circumstances where there is erroneous input from an AOA sensor.’
As a result of an investigation into the crash the jet manufacturer is said to be preparing a bulletin to be sent to operators of the 737 jets warning about faulty cockpit readings that could cause a dive.
The notice refers to the ‘angle of attack’, which is the angle of the wing relative to oncoming air stream, a measure that indicates if a plane is likely to stall.
This angle of attack, which is a calculation of the angle at which the wind is passing over the wings, is used to be determined if a stall is imminent.

The Best Sofa In The World
The Best Sofa In The World

The Statement Sofa
Do you want a sofa that has something interesting to say?  A sofa that doesn’t just facilitate conversation, it IS the conversation!? The statement sofa is the main event in the space.  They are sculptural and different, they’re conversation starters, they’re friends with big personalities.
1. Bohemian by Moroso from Hub
The Bohemian range by Patricia Urquiola is a favorite of mine (let’s face it, everything by her is my favorite) because it ticks a lot of boxes.  It has a traditional element, with echoes of the old Chesterfield buttoning style but in a completely new way.  The Bohemian is the perfect fit for a formal room in a Victorian style space, but with an edge. We have specified this in a pink and blue armchair version (it takes on a whole other personality), and are waiting for the sofa in divine green leather to arrive for some very cool clients. It’s an investment piece, for sure, but I’m a huge fan of the Bohemian.
2.Agent 86 by Grazia & Co
I’m so excited to share this exclusive on The Design Files!  It’s the brand new sofa design from Grazia & Co.  It’s cool and low, bulky but light.  It doesn’t have legs as the seat floats on an upholstered base.  Actually, I haven’t seen anything like it and I’m really LOVING it.
3. DS-600 by DeSede from Domo
Yes, it’s slightly crazy but also incredibly clever and totally original.  Known as the never-ending-sofa, there is nothing else that even comes close. Each module locks then zips together forming a sofa that can gently bend and curve its way through the space.  It’s even a bit of a movie star, and has made a few cameo appearances in films such as The Hunger Games and more recently it made an appearance at Club Unseen by Studio Pepe in Milan.  Although it was designed in 1972, I feel it’s making resurgence right now.  If you were thinking that a leather sofa made in Switzerland sounds expensive, then you’d be right!
The Go-To Sofa
These sofas work well in almost any space.  They are great for family life, as the sofa that everyone including the cat wants to curl up on!  The go-to sofa has to work hard as well as look gorgeous.  We watch tv, entertain, relax, sleep, and sometimes eat dinner on them.  Fabric choice plays a big part in choosing a sofa that is the right fit for you.
These options tick all of the boxes of comfort, durability and quality.  They will last for years.
1. Phoenix by Arthur G
This sofa is a chameleon.  It is extremely comfortable and the fabric selection can really change the entire look.  For example, a velvet fabric looks luxurious whilst a linen fabric is more natural and casual.  The design is timeless and simple, it’s a great go-to and is exquisitely made in Melbourne.
2. Zaza designed by Charles Wilson for King Living
It’s pretty safe to say, that King is the ‘go-to’ place for sofas.  They know how to do them very well.  Within each range are a million different configurations and fabrics to select from.  When I first saw the new Zaza, which is to be launched at Denfair this week, I thought to myself, ‘Oh! I like what you did there with the folding armrest’.  I like the low back profile and that it’s a bit finer than some of their other sofas.
3. Wallace by Carmenes from Ajar
I first tried this sofa at Denfair last year and it was just divine!  Those armrests are like soft squishy pillows and provide the comfort, without the loose cushions that needs fluffing up. It’s so comfortable and always looks neat and tidy.
4. Wilfred by Jardan
The Wilfred looks so gorgeous and plush, but still has a light appearance.  The floppy arm-rest over the solid oak frame gives it a lot of personality and a casual vibe.  When it was released a few years ago, designers kind of lost their minds and we are still in love with this guy.  I’ve seen it ‘dressed up’ with a leather side and back detail by a very clever designer (Hi Gillian).  It’s incredible how upholstery selection can totally change the look.
Small Space Sofas
A lot of sofas are just ENORMOUS and they won’t fit in the living room of an apartment, that’s if you can even get them up the lift in the first place!  And let’s face it – apartment living is on the rise and just because it may be small in size, it doesn’t mean that your sofa can’t be extremely comfortable and gorgeous!  In fact, I would argue that because it’s smaller, more of the budget could be invested in a quality sofa and fabric, rather than something huge, just to fill a big space.
1. Togo by Ligne Roset from Domo
The Togo is having a bit of a renaissance at the moment as many designs from the 70s emerge.  These modular sofas are low, plush and extremely comfortable, they seemed to know how to relax back in the 70s!  A single section is perfect in a small space, but equally, two or more sections can be joined together to fill a much more generous space. The Togo is made in France by Ligne Roset and has a youthful vibe.
2. Camille by ANACA sTUDIO
The Camille is most perfectly proportioned sofa with a slightly playful vibe. Designed by Melbourne based French/Australian furniture designer Anne-Claire, there is something very cute and sophisticated about the Camille, maybe that’s a French thing?  Anyway, it looks gorgeous in upholstered in a plush velvet and it’s extremely comfortable!
3. The Offset by Menu FROM tHE aPARTMENT
What I love about this sofa is that it’s both delicate and boxy at the same time.  The fine arm profile is maximizing the seat space, which is perfect in a small space.  Designed by Norm Architects, its both homey and architectural at the same time.
The Modular Sofa
I am a bit conflicted about modular sofas. I get it, they are great because you can lie on one end and sit on another and some spaces just suit modular sofas perfectly.  However, they are just SO BIG!  I prefer two sofas and some armchairs for variety and interest.  Modular sofas should have a light, streamlined appearance so that they don’t completely overwhelm the space.  However, these modular sofas are absolutely gorgeous – they are perfect for Netflix binges, rainy Sundays and theatre rooms.
1. Tufty Time by B&B at Space
The Tufty Time is one of those sofas known by name.  It’s kind of famous amongst designers.  I would go so far as to say that it is a design classic of our time. It was designed in 2005 by visionary designer Patricia Urquiola.
It’s a modular sofa with the ottoman at the core, allowing for multiple configurations such as for the seat to be very deep, or the armrests high or low.  You can design some creative configurations perfectly tailored to needs of the space. It invites lounging however it always looks smart and the upholstered form doesn’t need plumping up. One to save up for!
2. Gentry Sofa by Moroso from Hub
This is the really the ultimate modular sofa that designers love to use.  Its refined shape, soft seat cushion, and elegant legs make it a modern classic.  It looks gorgeous in fabric and leather, even in quilted fabrics because the shape is simple.
3. Arkley by Jardan
The Arkley Modular sofa from Jardan‘s brand new ‘Art Series’ range launches TODAY! (It’s so new, in fact, that it doesn’t appear to be on their website yet… whoops!). An uncharacteristically curvy, retro-inspired shape ensures this eye-catching piece is destined to be a future classic. We love it in the smaller 3-seater shape, too! All Jardan’s pieces are made in Melbourne, which is always a plus.
The Cane Sofa
You know what I mean; it’s that sofa in the entry that you use to throw your coat on. Or the sofa in the bedroom that you bought with ideas to sit and read on, but you’ve NEVER sat on it, it just gets piled with clothes. This kind of sofa looks gorgeous, but comfort is not its most important function.
1.Belladonna by Sika from Domo
This rattan sofa is so sweet and romantic; it would add a touch of bohemian whimsy to any space.  It’s an iconic piece designed in Denmark in 1951 and is back in production in Indonesia where rattan is grown in abundance. Rattan is a solid fibre whereas bamboo is hollow, in case you were wondering!
2. Cane sofa by Curio from ClickOn
If you have been living under a rock these past few years, you may not have noticed that cane webbing is having a serious moment.  This cane sofa is refined and elegant and it would look perfect in a sunroom.
The Leather Sofa
I have a few rules about leather sofas:
1. Never have two leather sofas in the room. It will be too much leather and feel heavy and overwhelming. 2. Instead, one leather sofa and one fabric sofa, to soften the look and allow the leather to be the focal point. 3. Never, EVER use shiny leather. It needs to look natural with a matte subtle feel, not stretched tight and slick. 4. Leather looks gorgeous in an array of natural colours from cream, beige, tan, cognac, greige, light brown through to dark brown, even forest green. 5. I am not convinced that a bright white leather sofa is ever a good idea, and I’m yet to meet a black leather sofa that doesn’t look sleazy. If you know one, please introduce me.
There are so many gorgeous leather sofas out there, however I have narrowed this down to three.
1. Tiki sofa by Fogia from Fred International
So light and elegant with a slightly curved profile to the back and arms, the Tiki stands out from the crowd.  Designed by Norwegian designer Andreas Engesvik it’s a modern classic in my book, and a sofa I regularly covet.
2. Dawson by Arthur G
This sofa is absolutely stunning in person. What isn’t conveyed in the image is the open seam at the corners of the buttery soft leather, so you see the lovely raw edge of the leather. It just feels incredible and natural.  And because these sofas are made entirely in Melbourne, they offer the luxury of customisation. It’s always worth asking the lovely team at Arthur G if there are images of their sofas in other fabrics, as it really helps get the ideas going.
3. Klassik by Great Dane
With a slightly mid-century Scandinavian vibe, this is a true classic.  The high back makes this an extremely comfortable sofa, without being bulky.  It looks beautiful in leather, however there are some lovely fabric options available. This style is sofa can also often be found in vintage stores – try Grandfather’s Axe for similar secondhand options.
The Curvy Sofa
Curves are back baby! There are a few sculptural sofas that have been released recently and they make quite a refreshing change from the square bulky shapes we’ve know and love!
1. Julep by Tacchini from Stylecraft
This generously proportioned sofa is almost more like a sculpture than a sofa.  The Julep sofa is inspired by the Avant-garde furniture of the Fifties, I think its beautifully feminine and just gorgeous.
2. Stay Sofa by Gubi from Luke
What you see is what you get with a sofa like this.  This neat shape is always going to stay the same, no plumping, fluffing or faffing required.  This is a great option if you have a sofa in the centre of the room, as its curves look beautiful from every angle.
The Share House Sofa
Ok, so you live in a sharehouse.  This doesn’t mean that you have to sit on that skanky sofa that’s just always been there, but no one knows where it came from.  Get your housemates to pitch in to buy an affordable sofa.  Failing that, make them pay a price-per-sit fee (!).
1. Denver by Oz Design Furniture
This sofa definitely gives good bang for your buck!  It’s generous in size, so great for lounging with friends, but also looks contemporary and smart.  (And we’ve just noticed it’s on sale now!)
2. Como Sofa from clickOn
The fine arm profile of the Como sofa allows for more seat space, with those two little cushions included to soften the look.  A nice classic design and neutral colour options makes this such a neat, versatile little sofa with a neat little price to match!
3. The Hold from Curious Grace
Your housemates will be well impressed that you found such a cool sofa at a great price.  Although brown velvet sofas are fairly common in share houses, I would take a bet they don’t look as gorgeous as this! (It comes in heaps of other colours too!).
4. The Mellow from Curious Grace
The great thing about the Mellow sofa, apart from its affordability, is that it is robust and sort of ‘unflappable’. This is a sofa you won’t have to be too ‘careful’ with, if you know what I mean.  The structured design and smooth upholstery always looks neat, and if you select a dark colour like this, it will hide all manner of stains.
The Dream Sofa
These are the sofas that designers lose their minds for.  When we specify them for our clients, we get insanely jealous and possessive, we just want them for ourselves.
1. Maralunga by Cassina from Space
When I asked my designer friends what their favourite sofa is, the Maralunga (available at Space Furniture) came up more than a few times!  Another design from the 70s that is relaxed and instantly recognizable with its folding backrest.  If you can find an original in good condition, its better than winning the lotto!
2. Sesann Lounge by Taccini from Stylecraft
This sofa gives me that feeling of walking out of Baby Pizza wishing that I wasn’t wearing jeans, apart from that, I am in love with this sofa. Bulky and soft at the same time, the Sesann Lounge was designed in 1969 and later went into production.
3. Maker &Son
I am seriously concerned that if I sit in this sofa by Maker & Son, I may never be able to move again!  The commitment to serious comfort is just beyond comparison!
Constructed with pure comfort in mind, this couch is built in the traditional way, using materials like French jute webbing, traditional horsehair layered with soft clouds of cotton, wrapped in hessian and canvas all topped with feather and down plump cushions.  It means that there are no poly-materials at all.  This is a sofa that’s really going to look after you, and give you permission to just… flop.
4. The Cloud Sofa by & Tradition
If you ask me what my favourite sofa is, well it changes…. at home we have the Togo and it’s a great sofa for a young family.  It doesn’t need any plumping up and the kids can jump all over it, and it doesn’t matter.  It always looks good.  However if I had to choose another, the Cloud by & Tradition is a firm favorite.  It has the right amount of structure and softness, it looks good from all angles, and it’s comfortable and elegant.
And, if all else fails…
If all of the options above left you feeling a bit, meh….?  There is a secret weapon out there that allows you to have the extra deep seat if you’re tall, or the wider arm at the perfect height, so that you can rest your head and fall asleep within three minutes. Or the perfect fibre fill that you don’t need to fluff up all the time. Maybe you’re more driven by the things you don’t even see, like an all-natural fibre filling free of formaldehyde, that you don’t want to inhale.  You may need an extra hard-wearing sofa, which uses a luxury outdoor performance fabric such as the Perennials 100% solution dyed acrylic. These outdoor fabrics might sound a little but believe me they are GORGEOUS!
There is another world of sofas that are custom-made to your specific requirements, if you work with an interior designer to help realise your vision.
Beyond choosing a different leg or fabric, there are so many options out there that an interior designer can introduce you to. Interior designers have a wealth of resources when it comes to sourcing the perfect fabric, as well as furniture fabricator contacts that are trade-only (sometimes the ones who actually supply sofas to your favourite stores). It means that you will own a sofa that your neighbours won’t have… because your sofa is about what fits perfectly for YOU!

Warhammer 40K Dev On Xbox And PS4 NEO One Electricity Variances, ‘Numerous AspectsI Will
Court papers registered in OraclesHA patent infringement suit against Google and its Android systems that are operating demonstrate that the private coverage of Google is to let pick Android OEMs get chosen usage of the smartphone OS. The files exclusively report Motorola—the same Motorola Yahoo has reported it'll purchase—and Verizon, which could properly be used like a struggle of fascination by the different OEMs of Yahoo. I did sonot know if at this time he got the sport or just ready again there till I dropped awareness and gone aside. The complete sport somewhat emits a Mario Kart-like experience also, that is constantly a-plus, and the sport is quite wonderful. That being said, muchas I enjoy cell gaming, between battle-to-the-bottom, FTP and games being consistently broken by OS changes, we regrettably nolonger see it to be in a position to support the somewhat higher-budget advanced games later on and eventually exchange the infrastructure of portables. Be informed, there are several points in this game that may not be suitable for everybody!!! It keeps the fundamentals of games that are Pokémon past — catching Pokémon, battling at Gyms, using items, developing your animals — having an insane angle: You're all carrying it out all-in real life. The Samsung $649 ATIV 500T ($769 having keyboard connect), like different Intel Atom based drugs, could operate most Windows applications: meaning x86ANDWindows-7 apps much like another complete Windows pc. The latter is of attention to Zelnick, who wants to view parity across portable and system types, consequently to not present a weaker solution to smartphone consumers. I believe that desire is boiled down seriously to by the main distinctions between Android and iOS supporters. The Xbox One isn't simply able to create definitely better hunting games the Xbox you have on loads of situations made 1080p games. they appear to know once they reach that stage of the game although We never tell these difficulties to the venture communities. Course's developer,, is creators of the augmented-reality game Ingress on which Pokémon Go's engineering and layout is situated, Niantic, earlier an internal start-up at Google. The 3D method lets you view the whole ninety moments from start to finish as you are currently seeing a system sport doing his thing. You will be able to utilize simple time that is portable with single variety through the cell phones lifestyle. Different new features declared today are the capability to revise gameplay and sport economy parameters in games instantly without having to post a new type of an application to Yahoo Perform, as well as a new service that offers designers the ability to estimate which consumers are most likely to invest profit their games (or drop out). We looked-for an employee to available the shelving that were secured together with the game racks inside and walked straight to the technology division. Should the research work in their favor, the sport could possibly be involved in to a significant employment programme that provides 1,500 new hires to the enterprise each year. http://elveszettszepseg.info feel like unless recreation remotes for cellular became a convention or several new insight product that is groundbreaking were designed, anyone nevertheless will not get the type of finetuned rapid -response you receive from controller inputs that are console. Anyone got a spot there, if peopleis requirement is just a replicated of the initial game. This week I used to be floored by person movies regarding Stop Fort, a-game that could be just like Minecraft in visuals but has so much hidden range when I pick up an ipadmini that it will likely be my initial iOS DL week that was next. If having built in actual remotes Apple previously decides to produce a device I believe Mobile gambling will get a good possibility of being taken seriously. Stopper your Android smartphone in via Flash, when the files are in your Windows pc, where you can choose Available product to view information and you ought to get a pop up screen. As you Can easily see, there's plenty of fps togo about and also the recreation must manage effortlessly sufficient on low detail on the low-end equipment. I had been in the retailer considering Android drugs and there's about 500 of them, numerous using HUGELY different rates and unique UIis. Everyone cannot purchase mobiles that are pricey so each business generating greatest and low-cost phones, now in indian cheap mobiles marketplace very tuff. The rising star of mulitchannel retail is cell, according to your study of U.S. and U.K. people executed by way of a digital marketing class Econsultancy it is not a really stunning discovering — presented the capabilities and pervasiveness of today's smartphones — however the results underline the expanding role phones are enjoying in buyers' life. Felton Rezz in the activities that are first has-been updated to be the twin brother of Grimroth in the film. Worse, people linked to Stylish say, improvement on the recreation is consistently abandoned by Stieglitzis interference. Each one of these gives its own distinctive advantages to some child while holding mobiles are available in a variety of different requirements and sorts. After FIVE years (SIX in the event that you rely the original Intel statement), it is period the builders end horsing about and acquire their programs uptodate. It had beennever frustrating like many fatalities of Recreation of Thrones are, nevertheless it was however heartbreaking. I do believe LOTS OF activities would work great on portable with some adjustments for the podium. Should you pop in a brand new hard-drive, deploy Snow Leopard, while you explained subsequently import Your Own Time Appliance back-up, which should operate great also. Bingis risk is the fact that by determined by adopters to manufacture the components and adjust the OS, the user may derive not get themselves of Yahoo's sources and the OS for their private use. However it generally does not fit for the control, already tried with the PS3 my iPad and controller Sport!!! The point that set back out game one of the most was modeling and animating the Pokemon. Most TELLY string H five devices that are mobile are not low in excellent and facilitates dual-SIM (GSM) element. Well claimed, and I consider they presently do, using the expansion of mobile gambling in their home country. He once informed some kiddies when a game is preordered sufficient it often can come previously away. Besides Battlefield 1 because from your PlayStation age I can't consider that anymore regardless of this being World War 1 and till around three years into the Xbox 360 Console it had been nothing but World War Two shooters. Since the original was therefore without spirit it felt just like a deceased globe We'll also skip Watchdogs and also the hacking was extremely trivial however the additional activities you stated along with a collection that you did not we'm really getting excited about. Chances are there are still a number of Android coders who're utilizing the tools that are outdated to develop their software. Take me subsequently, presently eighteen, began computer, using game boy, ps1 ps3, received an iPhone and now an ipod itouch. Then a job is not as uncomplicated as it seems to be as it pertains to spying on others cell phone. It is not unimportant for one to decide that in which phone they or, she really wants to criminal on. In this page of today's, numerous traveler application exist on the market to criminal on telephones that are several. Many Sonyericsson cell phones have the standard attributes that are there-in all the mobiles that are other, however distinct mobiles get different exclusive marketing idea which make them differ from their competitors. Most of these activities even have before buying the version that is full free version which you may try out. The sport even offers a huge amount of new epidermis packs that you can obtain to improve your character's appearance. The 3DS offers probably among the finest sport libraries of any mobile era. Furthermore on these enterprise that was android differing additional companies and software physicians is possible. the sport recording app from Samsung is super-cool although I'm-not sure whether or not it's on the performs took nevertheless. Last year introduced that he strategies to quit operating After-Game of Thrones systems up because he does not appreciate it as much as they used to. They likewise really wants to create method for other hobbies - they traveled to help poor people this past year,. The 2 clubs include mentioned the game is going to be introduced concurrently on the consoles together with the Laptop, although it'sn't clear perhaps the recreation is only likely to be to the recent generation consoles or whether there may also be a Xbox 360 and PS3 type. Not or imagine it there's a middle-ground between a serious 50 hr game and a 5 minute sport that is relaxed. The games do not get the official release-date, but Nintendo has mentioned they will not be unready to play by the Holidays” of 2016. Sport Of Thrones is the world's most unlicensed exhibit This. Will most likely not help it to shed that identify. Anyone in that more cash doesn't imply quality that is better and I certainly agree; that is why we chosen if I acquired the decision I'd elect to enjoy with an excellent system game-over an iOS recreation. If anyone iPad or else has found a better strategy to prevent games proper sort their iPhone, be sure to let the responses are known in by me! In case you come across activities using violent information, attempt marketing them on a website like and By letting your children, activities that are right are chosen. I just want to buy a whole game and enjoy with it. That's it. Number money regarding health pills or improvement that is quicker.

‘Everything goes fast in San Francisco’: Volvo’s US CEO talks about the $300 million Uber deal and creating the safest car in the world
Paul Nudelman/Company Expert/Volvo Vehicles
Volvo US boss Lex Kerssemakers
For decades, Swedish Volvo has loved a conspiracy-like pursuing in america. Its style that was offbeat has appealed to affluent suburbanites who’ve liked its status for security. Volvo homeowners have now been more than simply clients like a long household.
A little but great force — such as the worldwide auto-industry —’s rest was struck hard within 2007-09’s Excellent Downturn. Honda, which bought Volvo Vehicles in 1999, offered the manufacturer that was hobbled to Geely Team this year.
Unlike now-defunct nameplates such as for instance Saab and Saturn, Volvo might control from the downturn. A multibillion-buck money infusion, plus one hit new-vehicle, assisted create 2015 an archive-busting year for Volvo. It offered greater than a half-thousand vehicles global for that very first time in its 89-year background. Which summer that was previous it introduced a $300 thousand ideal partnership to build up driverless vehicles.
Company Expert swept up to speak about this change that was amazing.
This meeting continues to be modified for duration and quality.
Bryan Logan: Most People Are referring to Volvo’s home-driving car task with Uber. Did the businesses meet up?
Lex Kerssemakers: Among The factors we’ve the assistance with Uber is the fact that we reveal exactly the same curiosity. We both possess the eyesight to create, the moment feasible, independent vehicles on the highway. We’ve lots of knowledge, they’ve lots of knowledge. It is developed by us but at the conclusion we shall influence our understanding as well as market it.
Logan: lots of automakers are developing independent-operating engineering. One objective, amongst others, would be to decrease traffic accidents’ probability. Therefore it seems like the Volvo-Uber relationship furthers your “Vision 2020″ strategy, your objective to get rid of traffic-incident fatalities by 2020.
Kerssemakers: We think it’s the only path to make the journey to our goal. [ CEO Travis ] thinks it’s the path to satisfy their business design, since we utilize comparable systems, however it suits perfectly.
Kerssemakers: We require kilometers. We have to learn how an automotive setting is operated in by the engineering. Volvo has been chosen by them since we’ve the electric structure to help their program. And at the conclusion, encounter is needed by us, and by this acquire experience. It’s a startup that is perfect — as well as for Uber, simply because they obtain an excellent, good looking vehicle by which their program can be simply planted within by them.
Samantha Lee/Company Expert
Logan: How did Volvo and Uber result in exactly the same space together?
Kerssemakers: We fulfilled this past year. Our CEO were there, and the group, Travis, the technicians were all there. Exactly the same vocabulary is talked by them. Uber is great, they’re really significantly. And do things and our technicians like to keep in touch with them. Our boss has got the same perspective as Travis. Everything, and it went quickly moves fast within Bay Area.
Logan: General Motors can also be creating a play within this room using its relationship with Lyft. And certainly a quantity are of buyer-backed startups attempting to carve a large part within this marketplace out. A number of them are shifting to change vehicle ownership’s thought.
Kerssemakers: Everyone does their factor. Your business design provides flexibility, and you will see a variety of transportation of mobility and ways. A car will be owned by individuals, people may reveal a car. At the conclusion, it’s area of the blend, of course if the mix is 10% below or 20% there, we’re starting this really open minded.
Logan: Tesla boss Elon Musk frequently calls Teslas a few of the best vehicles available due to the company’s Autopilot home-operating function. Does that shake you, comprehending that Volvo is typically referred to as the best car-on the road?
Kerssemakers: ultimately, we have to produce a culture wherever 33,000 people aren’t murdered [in car incidents] each year. For making secure vehicles, and so I can just only motivate him. I understand that will be we’re not likely to provide up that, and the best vehicle organization. This can be a long-term not “we’ve and journey surely got that year.” It’s a long-term and to get this season trip. Information collects from real world incidents, and we’ve got really a great idea how vehicles respond in incident situations that are various. Your group that is entire are data driven. They are able to design all that real world info in electronic and duplicate it within our crash test security heart.
Logan: the present XC90 vehicle, the brand new S90 full size car, and finally brand new Volvos is likely to be plug in compounds with four-cylinder turbocharged motors. What ideas have you got for completely electrical cars?
Kerssemakers: We started initially to discuss electrification in 2008 whenever we required your decision togo for four-cylinders. Fuel-efficiency is large , – electrification and tube turbos. Next, we move in 2019 or 2018. It’s the near future, let’s encounter it. The period of cylinders that are large has ended — individuals wish to have vehicles that are large, however they nevertheless ought to be effective.
Logan: Tesla is leading the way in which there. They just about shattered the judgment of the idea and also variety nervousness that electrical vehicles weren’t useful or fashionable.
Samantha Lee/Company Expert
Kerssemakers: They absolutely split up the notion. They did a work that is good.
Logan: you simply released the S90, the very first fresh full size luxury car from Volvo in ten years, and also the next brand new design because the purchase. What type of reaction have you been viewing in the market?
Kerssemakers: The need internationally — imaginable — everyone really wants to possess the vehicle. If we get vehicles to do this I really hope to market 3 this season.
Logan: what type of long term revenue objectives have you got for that S90 contemplating SUVs are regularly outselling sedans?
Kerssemakers: you receive less people, however the people who arrived at the shop, they’re really focused on purchasing one. It’s another kind of marketplace with clients that are various.
Logan: The XC60 — that will be really a little more than the XC90 — continues to be promoting constantly too.
Kerssemakers: They’re both succeeding. We simply released a four-tube with all-wheel-drive within the XC60, therefore we now have our fresh Drive E motor there likewise. XC90 and the XC60 are our best selling vehicles, also it lets you know anything concerning the vehicle growth that’s currently happening at this time.
Logan: You’re seeking to contend with BMW and Mercedes Benz, which, to become reasonable, have bigger design outlines than Volvo.
Kerssemakers: We’ve a little vehicle arriving, the XC40. All our fresh small vehicles — constructed about the Small Modular Structure (CMA) system — can come towards the people. Every vehicle we create is likely to be worldwide.
Logan: Therefore before all Volvo’s improvement in the last couple of years, the organization was ontherocks to get a tad. After which an Asian car company, Geely, walked in. What’s their state of this connection today?
Kerssemakers: Under Geely, Volvo works like a standalone company. [ founder Li ] offered Volvo period complete expert, and persistence. He purchased Volvo this year. The XC90, which represented was just launched in 2015 five decades later. Therefore he’s been hearing several others for five decades in AROW and also to me. Every time we confirmed him our improvement, he explained excellent, signal down it, and he’s views, but he respected Volvo. He offered us the expert to complete what we’ve completed since he’s an extended-term perspective.
Logan: in early stages, some Volvo followers were worried the organization might shed its Remedial identification under Asian possession. What’s your response?
Kerssemakers: I’ve had several conferences using the boss of Geely. A great deal is shared by us. Since that’s effective from the corporate viewpoint, we attempt to mix issues, but Volvo is Volvo, Geely is Geely. It’s worked very well.
Logan: People had comparable issues about Jaguar Landrover when India’s Tata Motors purchased the organization from Honda in 2008, however the organization appears to be flourishing today.
Kerssemakers: It’s too soon to commemorate triumph, since we’re nevertheless about the trip. But it’s these from Asia who got over Jaguar-Landrover, it’s these from China who got over Volvo, who’ve proven the world that is American it ought to be completed. We’ve observed several takeovers previously, plus all been effective is haven’ted by them. Each Tata and it’s an extremely fascinating tale, and Geely were really intelligent. Again , soon to contact it a triumph, but Jaguar-Landrover does perfectly and we’re improving every year. Food later on for thought.
Samantha Lee/Company Expert
Logan: You’re creating your first US-centered construction place in Sc. How is the fact that coming along?
Kerssemakers: We’re still on the right track. End-of 2018, we ought to be creating the S60 there. It’s really interesting. Creating a manufacturer, in my experience, is really awesome. And also the neighborhood regulators, the governor you will find therefore encouraging. It’s not necessarily about cash — it’s additionally about mindset, assistance the cash you will get, and bonuses in most condition. About how they approach things they’re It’s.
Logan: That places Volvo correct in BMW’s and Mercedes-Benz’s yards.
Kerssemakers: The South is smartly a great spot to be. We must be near to the ocean, therefore we move and could transfer components and vehicles. About people, it’s at the conclusion. Can there be a press, can there be an association? Do we feel comfy that people are likely to create the trip? We discovered that in Sc.
Logan: Getting it back again to Florida, a lot of carmakers have put up study-and-improvement modems in Silicon Valley. What’s Volvo planning?
Kerssemakers: We’re currently in Camarillo, within the La region, where we’ve the idea and style heart. We created, as well as CarPlay in Camarillo from our office. We caused Apple, and with Microsoft [ HoloLens ], we do some issues of course Uber. We’ve had great encounters that are such that people are determined we would like folks from the Region employed by us. Therefore we shall start an — they’re investing in the furniture today. We shall have about 70 technicians. We call it Florida. It’s one business with two practices. The one that is brand new is in Mountain-View.
That workplace may concentrate on operating that is independent infotainment, everything that’s occurring below. We’re an organization that is little with brief conversation outlines, making an impact. We don’t have 25 therefore we are able to do things extremely fast. We’re since normally we’re able to haven’t constructed fresh infotainment, those fresh systems, fresh factories electrification using on that today. We made it happen all-in five decades 000 technicians, with 6, so powerful. And vehicles.
