entering the top 5 now. Home stretch!
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is my favourite movie. And I think everybody should watch it because it's good and it's fun and it's heartwarming and I love it. This movie is the reason I got into Captain Underpants, one of the biggest sources of joy in my life. This one movie has done so much for me, has given me so much inspiration and comfort during the worst periods of my life, spurred me to join tumblr in the first place so I could share that joy with others who felt the same, led to me meeting people I now consider some of the best friends I've ever had. It means a lot to me is what I'm saying.
and even beyond that, it's just genuinely a fantastic movie?? The animation is gorgeously stylized and fluid, the comedy and heart are perfectly balanced, and the way it all revolves around George and Harold's beautiful beautiful friendship?? What do you MEAN this movie was less successful than Boss Baby?????? And god, oh my GOD, this is the movie that introduced me to my BOY, one of my favourite characters of all time, Captain Underpants himself. I could gush about him all day but I already have an entire side blog dedicated to gushing about him so I'm just gonna leave you with this clip and let you see for yourself 😚:
youtube
and also this clip because PLEASE, I need you to understand THIS MOVIE AND THESE CHARACTERS ARE SO SO GOOD PLEASE
youtube
so yes. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is one of the best movies Dreamworks has ever made. And I am very, very excited to see what they do with the Dog Man movie next year ♥️

I’ve always wanted to learn Welsh - it will be my project after I finish writing my dissertation. Do you have good recommendations for some favorite books I can try to read to pick up grammar and speech patterns? Duolingo probably won’t cut it. I prefer the fantasy genre as a whole.
Ah, you mean normal books, yes? Not grammar books?
My biggest recommendation is anything by Mihangel Morgan. They use him for GCSE/A Level second language learners, actually, because his language is incredibly clear and accessible, but his plots are batshit and interesting. He did a short story collection called Saith Pechod Marwol, where each story is based on one of the seven deadly sins - Gluttony is a bit fatphobic (although it's more about a creepy Norman Bates-flavoured murderer, but there are definitely fatphobic elements to it), but the rest are fab. Sometimes compelling social issues (Sloth and Greed in particular), sometimes gaudy sci-fi (Lust), sometimes batshit (Gluttony). But all are well-written, and as they're each short, it's a good intro for a learner. Croniclau Pentre Simon might be good for that, too.
When you're ready, Dan Gadarn Goncrit is his best. That's also my husband's favourite book of all time, in any language.
Um, otherwise... y Llyfrgell, by Fflur Dafydd, it won the Fedal Rhyddiaith in the Eisteddfod several years back now. Set in an alternate universe where Wales goes independent and wants to establish itself as Very Modern, and so bans all paper books in favour of digital - other than those kept under lock and key in the National Library. The main characters are twins who can read each others thoughts, but one twin is evil kind of. And there's a murder.
Lleidr Amser by - drum roll please - Terry Pratchett! Translated from the original English, obviously, but it's there! More advanced than the others, though. But, if you own the English Thief of Time, you could probably manage a readalong.
If children's books are easier to start with, my husband did the translations for Captain Underpants, on that note.
There will be others too, so probably keep an eye on this thread - I imagine people will share their own recommendations!

Today marks 7 years since the reawakening of my Captain Underpants hyperfixation, which had been asleep for a very, very long time.
I had first discovered the books much like any kid in the late 90s/early 2000s; at the Scholastic Book Fair. If I remember correctly, the first one I had found was the second book, Attack of the Talking Toilets. I remember thinking how silly the cover looked, and it drew my little elementary school self in like a moth to flame.
I had quickly read it and absolutely loved it, and like discovering a new favorite treat for the first time, I immediately wanted more.
I was able to find the first book in my school’s library so I was able to get the full story on the two best friends who pulled the ultimate prank by hypnotizing their grouch of a school principal, and how it immediately became the worst decision they ever made.
And I loved every second of it.
As the years went on, I eagerly anticipated the Book Fair’s arrival at my school and would beg my mom for a few dollars extra, just so I get my hands on the newest adventure.
I devoured every single story I could find and bought as soon as I could, and each one was more entertaining than the last. From alien lunch ladies and zombie nerds, to a megalomaniac professor with an incredibly silly name in a giant robot with charts that you could use to give yourself a silly name (mine is “Poopsie Bananachunks” BTW), to an insane hypnotized woman with Medusa hair that gave atomic wedgies.
The more I read and reread these stories, the more I couldn’t help but think that it would make a pretty fun movie, or at least a tv show.
These stories had been with me through a lot of ups and downs in my life, the biggest being my parents’ divorce. They were there to remind me that even when times could be tough, you can make it through and still be able to laugh at even the silliest of things, no matter how old you got.
By the time I was 10, I got my hands on the latest book in the series, The Big Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy Part 1. I loved it as always, but was shocked to see it ended on a cliffhanger. This had never happened before. I was anxious to see what would happen and how George and Harold would get out of this mess.
But… it would be some time before I got those answers.
Time went on, and my attention went to other things. I found new hyperfixations over the years, and while I didn’t have the 7th book at the time, I was eventually able to get answers thanks to the internet.
Eventually I entered middle school, and I found myself drawn to new book series that I grew to love, but Captain Underpants remained a big part of my childhood and some of its happiest memories. And for a while, I thought that was all it would be; memories to just fondly look back on.
But that all changed the winter of 2016.
It was the halfway point between Christmas and New Year’s, and I was gonna be 24 in less than a month. I was spending my downtime between holidays like any other bored 20-something year old; scrolling through Tumblr, of course. It was during that time that I stumbled across this post by @mondentertainment. It was photos of posters from a Licensing Expo, showcasing upcoming animated projects, be it films or series.
Among them were a few that sounded promising, others not so much.
But what caught my eye was this.
Tumblr media
A poster from DreamWorks with a very familiar face on it.
I could barely believe what I was seeing, and from the comments and reblogs on the post, neither could a lot of other people.
It was like a door that had been long locked in the back of my brain finally burst open, and all those memories came flooding back, particularly of a reoccurring thought that ran through my young mind whenever I would look at those illustrations every time I turned the page.
Could it really be true? Was one of my favorite childhood books finally getting a chance to truly come to life on the big screen?
It had already happened once before after I read Coraline in middle school, so there might be a chance.
As you could probably imagine, I poured my thoughts of hope and excitement into the tags as I reblogged the post.
Tumblr media
And when the trailer finally dropped three months later, it was like meeting that one childhood friend you never truly forgot all over again.
So much happened after seeing the movie on opening night, including meeting Dav Pilkey himself!
And all the great memories and friends I’ve made since rediscovering the fandom all lead back to that one moment on December 28th, 2016.
And I couldn’t be more grateful for that.

Random thought of the day: What if Melvin views George and Harold a similar way to how Honey Bees view Wasps?
If you think about it; Wasps are the biggest enemy of worker bees, they steal their honey; which is one the bees most prized procession.
Does that sound familiar to you?
From Melvin’s point of view, that sounds quite similar to his rivalry with the gifted two comic artists.
Just like wasps, George and Harold steal Melvin’s most prized processions [his inventions] they normally use it for a good cause (e.g: helping Captain Underpants defeat villains) Usually a wasp’s motivation for stealing honey is to feed their own hive as they compete for honeydew and nectar.
But as far as Melvin is aware; George and Harold are just stealing his honey inventions, exactly like a wasp does.
(I hope this makes sense because I’m really trying to make this thing understandable)

And round 2 is officially over!
It was very intense! Some of you wanted to (lovingly) hit me with something, but jokes on you because that only makes me stronger 😈
We had some real sweeps. Not whatever you call when your fav is losing, but actual bona fide sweeps. Congratulations to Howl's moving castle, A Goofy Movie, The Breadwinner and Wolf Children for obliterating their opponent. But specially to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, biggest sweep and most votes! *insert the evil has been defeated.jpeg*
We also had not one, but two ties! Kung Fu Panda vs Treasure Planet and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie vs Turning Red! All get to advance to next round, wohooo! And we had so many almost ties! I feel specially bad for the Lego movie which was slightly ahead when I checked an hour before closing time, but the fervor of mutant turtles fans is nothing to be scoffed at. Encanto, Tangled, Birdboy, Meet the Robinsons, Isle of Dogs and ParaNorman were also so close to making it! My biggest condolences to their fans 🙏
The Captain Underpants fandom, who managed to defeat another dog movie, entertained me a lot again, so I decided to bump the movie in my watch list and put it on top, see what all that love is about.
Speaking of watch lists, last time I promised I'd watch some movies, and I did! Here's some quick impressions of each:
The Congress: It was interesting. A bit too long for my tastes, specially at the beginning. Some things were a little too vague, I think. Can't help thinking not even animators would be needed with "AI". Reminded me of a sci fi story I read many many years ago and spent an hour looking for it. It was The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect, very similar concepts, go read it.
Waltz with Bashir: Another Ari Folman. The animation felt a bit too video game-esque to me at first, but you get used to it easily. This one is a documentary about the director's experiences in the Lebanon War, trying to find out his role in the 1982 Beirut Massacre. It's an exploration of memory and guilt and trauma. It's not easy to watch and it contains real graphic footage at the end. But if you can stomach that, go watch it.
The Fabulous Baron Munchausen: Available in the Internet Archive, which is lucky because I couldn't find it anywhere else. I guess it's not bad it lost because I'm not sure I could qualify this as animated.* I couldn't really get into the story, but the way it was filmed makes it a beautiful feast for the eyes.
Finally, you guys asked for a sideways map tree, also known as bracket, so now that we're down to 64(ish) movies I'll keep my promise and make it. That said, I expect to take a couple of days to organize everything and set up the polls, so we'll have a brief intermission. In the meantime, go watch some amazing animation shorts over at @best-animated-short-tourney
Keep sending those asks, it makes my day every time I receive one :D I love discussing the good, the bad, what you liked, what you didn't, all criticism welcome, but remember do not attack people over what they like!
*which does bring to question about what is or isn't an animated movie. We agreed Roger Rabbit could qualify, and of course CGI is a form of animation.... could it then be argued movies like Avatar (the blue ones) that rely heavily on CGI are animated? The film literally only has two shots with no CGI! Or the Disney "live action" remakes that are basically just CGI? Food for thought I guess.

$58m+ weekend estimate for KUNG FU PANDA 4...
That beats the openings of the other two sequels (using KUNG FU PANDA 2's $47m 3-day opening, not its whole Memorial Day weekend take), sits nicely below the $60m opening weekend gross of the first movie. All the way back in 2008, without 3D or DBOX or today's ludicrous ticket prices. Still, impressive!
Really held its own nicely against DUNE: PART TWO's second weekend, too. Packed showtimes yesterday at work, so packed that the other animated family film option - also a Universal movie, MIGRATION - was packed down to the front row as well.
Given how well it was doing, the estimates - some project - might be a little on the low side. If this indeed tops $60m, and maybe even KUNG FU PANDA's opening weekend gross... This will be DreamWorks' first film to top that amount on opening weekend since MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE'S MOST WANTED. All the way back in 2012.
As such, it is still the company's biggest domestic opening since HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD in 2019. COVID-19 really cut into some of the Comcast-era DreamWorks movies at the box office, and while theaters have been back for a while, a lot of DreamWorks' output now plays the same long game other animated movies have been playing as of late: Open small, have ludicrous legs. KUNG FU PANDA 4, being part of an iconic series that's over 15 years old now, obviously was poised to open a lot higher than - say - THE BAD GUYS. If DreamWorks fired up another sequel to an old favorite, like MADAGASCAR, I'm sure it'd open similarly.
(Remember when MADAGASCAR 4 was penciled in for a 2018 release over 10 years ago? Pepperidge Farm remembers...)
Also, I won't be surprised if - within a few months or so - KUNG FU PANDA 5 gets etched onto the schedule for a 2027 release.
Elsewhere in Universal and Jack Black animated movie land, it was announced today - MAR10 Day - that the new SUPER MARIO BROS. animated movie is in the works. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to the helm, to no one's surprise.
Tumblr media
An untitled affair, and described kind of as a new movie and not so much a direct sequel? Well, whatever it is, it's debuting April 3, 2026. Much like the first movie, an early April 2023 release that went on to become one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all-time... So we have a date for that, but not whatever studio Illumination is serving up in 2025. Maybe they'll take that year off? Who knows. We have DESPICABLE ME 4 this coming summer, and then there's a gap in the schedule til this new Mario movie.
Universal's animation schedule so far. Looks like a powerhouse!
7/3/2024 - DESPICABLE ME 4 (Illumination)
9/20/2024 - THE WILD ROBOT (DreamWorks)
1/31/2025 - DOG MAN (DreamWorks)
8/1/2025 - UNTITLED (DreamWorks)
9/26/2025 - UNTITLED (DreamWorks)
4/3/2026 - UNTITLED MARIO MOVIE (Illumination)
9/25/2026 - UNTITLED (unknown at the moment, likely DreamWorks)
Three DreamWorkses in 2025, most of which are likely outsourced to Sony Imageworks, that DOG MAN movie will probably be a Mikros collaboration like CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS was. Fitting, both being based on Dav Pilkey books. I have a feeling we'll get an Illumination in there somewhere, either a summer picture (SECRET LIFE OF PETS 3? Some original movie?) or a near-Christmas SING threequel. That is, if Paramount moves THE SEARCH FOR SQUAREPANTS from that slot. I don't know at the moment. We also have that third LEGO MOVIE still, that's got its directors, release could be anytime at this point.

I remember when I was younger, I wasn't the biggest fan for pinkie pie from mlp. I wanted to buy a fluttershy plush from BAB but they where sold out and pinkie pie the only one available so got her even if I didn't want her then fluttershy was back in stock the next day and I got really upset mostly at pinkie pie, but as the years have gone by and pinkie pie still sits on top of my art of the captain underpants movie book, I have grown to really love her, put her as my top 4 ponies with derpy and luna. Now I'm on ebay wanting buy a figure of her, I need the pink.

AJ the Very Whimsical, Ch. 6: Hug Thief!
To Lance
~~~~
AJ's one eye shone brightly, and her hands were clasped together in a pose that oozed excitement. Never before had this little, French girl seen anything so beautiful in her whole, entire life! Merci, God, for bringing the inventor of the shopping mall into this world!
Right in front of AJ was a shop window. And beyond that shop window was a neon sign reading "WONDERFUL WALLY'S TOY BARREL". And beyond that sign beyond that shop window was the biggest assortment of stuffed animals AJ had ever seen! Monkeys, frogs, giraffes, penguins, foxes -- you name it, they were all there. Any one of them would be perfect for the tea party AJ was planning for that afternoon (her pet turtle Surly, had chewed up Louis Lettucehead, so she was one guest short).
Drooling with lust, AJ unclasped her hands and reached slowly for the envelo-wallet ("envelope wallet") she kept in her boot.
"Must get..." the little girl thought as she opened her wallet to get some money out. "Must get a cute, stuffy an-e-mal..."
"AJ? What are you doing?"
The girl in question jumped upon hearing her name and nearly dropped her envelo-wallet.
Turning around, she found her mother standing behind her with her hands full of Rockin' Threads and ToolGrease shopping bags (the two reasons the Arquettes had come to the mall in the first place).
Not missing a beat, AJ walked right up to her mother and craned her neck so she could look into Blaze's face -- for Blaze was very tall -- with a cute, puppy dog-esque smile.
"Mommy," the little girl said sweetly, "may I 'ave a new stuffy an-e-mal, si'l vous plait*? I need one for my tea party zis afternoon!"
Blaze squinted at the stuffed animals in the store window. Next to them was a sign reading: "STUFFED ANIMALS -- $5.00 (EACH SOLD SEPARATELY)".
"Do you 'ave enough money?" she asked.
AJ opened her envelo-wallet and pulled out seven quarters.
"Eez zis enough?" the little girl asked, showing her change to her mother.
Blaze, who was a whiz at math, was already shaking her head within six seconds of seeing the quarters. "Je suis desole**, Crumpet, but zat won't even get you 'alf of a 'stuffy'."
AJ looked and felt as though she'd just been told she was on Santa's Naughty List.
"N-Non..." the silly girl said quietly, clutching her quarters to her chest. "Non! I can't 'ave less zan 'alf a stuffy! Zat'd be like eating only one 'otdog! Eet makes no sense for a girl my age to 'ave a tea party weeth less zan 'alf a stuffy an-e-mal!"
Her face softening, Blaze put her shopping bags down and bent down so she was eye-level with her daughter. "AJ..."
But the younger Arquette wasn't listening; too busy was she, with searching her tights, boots, and coat pockets for spare change.
But, unfortunately, all she found was a paper clip, her house key, and a piece of candy, much to her frustration.
"LE GAAAHH!" AJ exclaimed, pulling on her hair. "I need a stuffy, money or non money! Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine!"
AJ began running towards The Toy Barrel’s glass doors. Blaze picked up her daughter in an effort to calm her down, but AJ squirmed so much, she ended up kicking her mother's pants down.
"Le eeeep!" the elder Arquette squealed, dropping her child and squatting down to try and cover up her blue and orange polka-dot boxers.
Finally free, AJ ran inside the store before her mother had the chance to try and stop her.
Blaze, who had a firm grip on her trousers at this point, shook her head in disappointment.
"Oh, AJ," the elder Arquette tutted, "you 'ave non idea 'ow grounded you are."
Blaze tried to pull her pants up, but SHRIIIP! They split right down the middle.
"Oh mon orange!" the cafeteria lady gasped with surprisingly mild embarrassment. "My shoes don't match my underpants at all! Seelly me!"
Indeed, the purple hospital booties Blaze was wearing as shoes clashed horribly with her boxers.
"I knew I should've worn my Captain Lazerbeam undies today..." she remarked, sighing wistfully.
Meanwhile, inside Wonderful Wally's Toy Barrel...
AJ's hidden eyes lit up like bulbs on a Christmas tree as she looked at the toy-land around her. Toy guitars lined the walls behind the counter, while all the other walls were packed to five inches below the ceiling with shelves upon shelves upon shelves of toys of all other sorts, from cars to Collectible Carrie dolls to silly putty eggs to building blocks. In the middle of the store stood little islands filled with prank items like snapping gum and Chinese finger traps. Right next to the front counter was a large, plastic cactus with a coin slot on top of it and a sign nailed to its front that read: "ST. BOBBIN'S HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN: DONATE HERE". It was behind this charitable cactus that AJ had decided to hide.
"Le jeepers’ creepers," the wacky girl thought to herself with an enthusiastic grin. "I weesh I could live 'ere..."
So awestruck was AJ, she would have completely forgotten about her mission had her eyes not fallen on the stuffed animal display in the window.
"Oh, right!" she thought, feeling stupid. "I need to get ze stuffies!"
Rubbing her hands together greedily, the little girl tried to sneak towards the stuffed animals...but then her mother showed up and snatched her up.
"'Ey!" AJ pouted. "What ze applesauce, Mommy!? You know I ‘ate woman-'andling!"
"AJ, we've been over zis," Blaze responded sternly. She was now wearing a shopping bag as a skirt, which AJ felt strong urges to play with, laugh at, and/or add to her make-believe fashion line, "eet's not 'woman-'andling' eef ze women are een an emotionally 'ealthy relationship. Now, what ze applesauce are you doing?"
Snapping her attention away from her mother's weird skirt, AJ decided now was the time to start begging (mostly because thinking ahead and coming up with detailed game plans wasn't really her thing).
"I'm trying to get to ze stuffy an-e-mals!" the silly girl whined, pointing to the display window. "Si'l vous plait, Mommy, let me get one!!!"
The storekeeper, who had up to this point been reading a magazine behind the counter, fainted as a result of shock-itis brought upon by AJ’s whining. It took only three seconds for customers to realize something was wrong and start screaming and running out of the store, pushing the Arquettes out in the process.
Once they were outside the store, Blaze put her child down on the tiled hallway, adjusted her hearing aid (which had malfunctioned as a result of all the screaming that happened in the store), and crouched down so she was eye-level with her.
“Angel Kallie Arquette, Jr.!” the cafeteria lady said, making her child gulp and grimace. “‘Ow many times ‘ave I told you to wait until you go on ze date before you make a boy faint!? Eef you want to make a statement about ‘ow eet’s not just women ‘oo faint, zen, for Pierre’s sake, make sure you do eet right!”
“I-I deedn’t do eet on purpose, Mommy!” AJ sputtered in indignation. “Sometimes women’s rights statements just ‘appen, you know?”
Blaze inflated her cheeks, looking like she might explode for once in her 25 years of easygoingness, then she let out the air, grabbed AJ by the hand, and began walking down the hallway towards the outside door, informing her daughter they would be going home without any “stuffy animals”.
“WHAT!?” AJ  shrieked in a voice two pitches higher than normal (Blaze winced as her hearing aid malfunctioned for the second time that day, forcing her to adjust it again). “B-B-B-But Mommy! I need a new stuffy an-e-mal for my tea party zis afternoon! I can’t ‘ave one weeth only three guests! Zat would be dumb!”
Blaze gave a surprisingly sneaky smile as she dug through her shopping bag.
“Well, I guess eet was a good zing I peecked up some sewing supplies, zen,” she said as she pulled a new sewing kit and some material out of her bag.
AJ squealed in delight and hugged her mother’s waist (as high as she could reach).
“Merci, merci, merci!” she gushed, her voice muffled by Blaze’s shopping bag skirt. “Je t’aime***, Mommy! Tu gères****!"
Blaze smiled as she kissed her daughter on the forehead. “Je t’aime aussi, AJ. But I’m afraid you’re steell grounded.”
AJ looked up at her mother, her smile suddenly faltering. “Wait, really?”
Since almost everyone in the CU universe is in the Krupptoon!AU, what about those three skateboard dudes that got duded by Melvin with their dudeboards? Or are they also duded outta this AU?
Holy shit I forgot about those dudes! XD
I dont see why not.
For those who dont know what my dear friend kiki is talkin about, the dudes appeared in the 7th book. The book where Melvin and Mr.krupp switched bodies, but that also ment Cap was in Melvin's body.
Tumblr media
This is where we see the dudes, they replaced any adjective or verb with the word dude.
Tumblr media
Also heres an extra page just to see this mf beat the shit out of these dudes.
Tumblr media
Anyway, here they are (yes I know I kinda butchered their designs, but they look god dont they?).
Luke Warren (Luk-warm)
Absol utlee (absolutely)
Kevin T (Cavity)
They sabotage the Jerhome Industry so Moxie and Krupptoon try to get rid of them (and I dont mean kill them, because their too much fun to mess with), then a few arcs later they team up with Gregory and Tacos.
If you need any questions about them, just ask. :)
