With songs like I woke up gay and Lonely lesbian, LGBT+ punk band Shh...Diam! is making a rare splash in Malaysia, using music to fight long-running discrimination.
The four-member group is a rarity in a country where gay and transgender issues are often seen as taboo, cross-dressing is illegal and sodomy is banned under a British colonial-era law.
Its name, which means “shut up” in the Malay language, is meant to mock critics for seeking to silence the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people.
“We never intentionally set ourselves up as an LGBT band,” lead singer Faris Saad told the Thomson Reuters Foundation before a performance on the outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur.
“But eventually your life experiences make their way to your music so you can’t help it. You’ve got to be honest — so that’s what we are with our music,” said the 34-year-old transgender man, who began transitioning in 2014.
Several incidents in the Muslim-majority nation this year have stoked concerns among campaigners that the climate for the country’s LGBT+ community is deteriorating further.
In August, government officials ordered the removal of portraits of two LGBT+ activists from an art exhibition and a transgender woman was attacked, sparking public outrage.
And in September, two women in the conservative state of Terengganu were caned under the Islamic Shariah law after being caught attempting to have sex in a car.
‘God’s orders’
Shh...Diam! had its unlikely beginning nine years ago.
The organiser of a lesbian pool party was looking for a band to entertain revellers, so aspiring musician Faris quickly assembled the group with some acquaintances.
Since then, it has built up a small but steady fan base among the LGBT+ community, producing two albums and performing in several European countries.
Raised in a Muslim family, Faris knew from a young age that the female body he was born with was wrong.
He decided to transition soon after turning 30. But to get the hormone treatment he needed, he had first to undergo a six-month psychiatric evaluation to be diagnosed with “gender identity disorder”.
“I feel more confident that I am now in my own body,” said Faris, adding that the band wanted to encourage other LGBT+ people to embrace themselves like him too, while changing the skewed perceptions toward the community.
“We have been vilified by the government. According to the government, LGBT people are perverts and paedophiles,” added the freelance journalist. “I want to change that.”
The recent surge in attacks on the LGBT+ community and anti-gay rhetoric from senior officials has dovetailed with what critics say is a rise in religious conservatism, which has eroded Malaysia’s traditionally tolerant brand of Islam.
More than 60 per cent of Malaysia’s 32 million people are Malay Muslims, but the country is also home to a large number of ethnic minorities who practise other religions.
Religious leaders are among those who have spoken out against the LGBT+ community, arguing homosexuality is forbidden by religious teachings.
“God has created man and woman and created them in pairs. We cannot go against this, it is wrong,” Harussani Zakaria, an outspoken mufti, or Islamic scholar, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
“We are not against democracy, we just can’t defy God’s orders. Even animals do not engage in homosexual acts,” he added.
‘Have fun’
Since Shh Diam! was set up, it has not had any run-ins with the authorities, and has stuck to performing in independent venues and in urban areas which its members see as generally accepting of their music.
The band’s music is a mix of metal, punk and jazz. Their songs also touch on topics such as housemates fighting, Bollywood movies — and even toilets.
The guitarist, who asked to be referred to as Yon, said the band aimed to give LGBT+ people a way to escape daily discrimination and just have fun through music.
“It’s our experiences and random things that we like which we put into our songs,” said Yon, who is bisexual.
“The main purpose of the band is to have fun. We love to play music, we play music, the LGBT activism that comes with the band is just a reflection of who we are,” she added.
Indie music fan Gary Tay, who was among the small crowd that showed up to watch the band’s performance, said he believed artists such as Shh...Diam! should be allowed to sing about what they believed in.
“I wish that one day in Malaysia in the near future, we can talk about these kinds of issues very openly,” Tay said. — Thomson Reuters Foundation

Doctor Albright Pharmacy Advices
Many companies have clearly stated policies that govern drug usage. Brand manufacturers suffered the steep investment costs innovating the drug so generic manufacturers do not have to go through the same. In fact, Consumer Reports has tested many of these products and found that paper towels and food storage bags perform the same whether they are generic or name brand. If you notice that you or someone else you know is becoming more tolerant of the drugs they are taking and require a larger dose, then that is a sign that they may have a dependency. Avoid taking iron supplements with milk products such as cow's milk, yogurt, chocolate, and cheeses, due it making the stomach weak which can cause diarrhea. Whether you have family members who have to take care of your health-related needs or if you just want to save some money, using an online chemists makes sense. The good news is that there are many great reasons to switch from your local chemists to an internet ordering. When they are improperly packed, they’re prone to damage in transit. Symptoms after being bitten are nausea, vomiting, headaches, stomach cramps, dizziness and possibly convulsions. If pharmaceuticals are not earmarked for Canadian citizens, they are not subject to the Canadian government's safety regulations. This yields greater social benefits and allows Canadian pharmacies to proposition these drugs to consumers at surprisingly moo prices. Consumers can save even more money on prescription medications. It is a shame when we live in the land of milk and honey yet many individuals cannot even afford life saving drugs. Oncologists and their patients may be more willing to try off-label drugs than other medical specialties. Try not to pass it on to other people. WHO sounds warning on coronavirus ‘second peak’: Live updates | News
The World Health Organization has warned of the risks of an “immediate second peak” as countries ease up on lockdowns, urging governments in Europe and the US to step up surveillance, testing and tracking measures to keep the disease under control.
Spain has revised its death toll downwards by nearly 2,000 people after checking data from the regions and discovering some deaths had been recorded twice while others had not been the result of the coronavirus.
Public anger continues to simmer in the UK over Dominic Cummings, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s chief political adviser, who apparently flouted lockdown to drive from his home in London to his parents’ house in the north when he suspected he had coronavirus. Cummings adopted a conciliatory tone at an extraordinary news conference on Monday but did not apologise.
Nearly 5.5 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed around the world, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 346,000 people have died, while more than 2.2 million have recovered.
Here are the latest updates:
Tuesday, May 26
06:00 GMT – Social distancing to be extended until June 29 in Germany
Germany plans to extend social distancing until June 29, newspaper Bild cited a draft document that still needs to be approved by the federal states as saying.
Asked about the report, a spokesman for the German government said talks were ongoing.
Bild said meetings in public places would be limited to a maximum of 10 people or members of two households.
Hello, this is Linah Alsaafin taking over the blog from my colleague Kate Mayberry.
05:30 GMT –
I’m handing over the blog to my colleagues in Doha. Before I go, an update of developments so far this morning. As more countries ease their lockdowns (Saudi Arabia is the latest to announce a relaxation), the WHO is warning again of the dangers of a ‘second peak’. On the medical front Japan’s tests of Avigen as a coronavirus treatment have been delayed while US firm Novavax has started phase one trials for its vaccine in Australia. Meanwhile, a study has found some 8,000 more people died in Mexico city in the first months of 2020 than the average of the same period over the previous four years.
05:20 GMT – Novavax starts coronavirus vaccine trial in Australia
US biotech firm Novavax has started trials of the novel coronavirus vaccine it’s developing.
It expects preliminary results from the phase one trial of NVX-CoV2373 by July.
The phase one trial is taking place in Australia. The second phase will include more countries.
04:35 GMT – Fujifilm COVID-19 drug research spills over into June
Research into Fujifilm’s Avigen drug as a potential treatment for COVID-19 will continue into June.
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had said he hoped the drug would be approved in May if its efficacy and safety could be confirmed.
“The company will continue research into next month or so, and if an application for approval is received from the company, it will be promptly reviewed,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a regular briefing when asked about Avigan.
Suga said trials of a coronavirus vaccine could begin as early as July, raising expectations about a candidate developed by Osaka University and biopharmaceutical firm AnGes Inc .
Avigan is the subject of at least 16 trials worldwide, though there is concern the drug has been shown to cause birth defects in animal studies.
Japan has given up on approving Fujifilm Holdings Corp’s anti-influenza drug #Avigan this month for the treatment of patients infected with the new coronavirus, health minister Katsunobu Kato says.https://t.co/katTFchGxm

03:50 GMT – Australia borders won’t open “anytime soon”: PM Scott Morrison
Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the country won’t open its borders “anytime soon” but the government was continuing to discuss a travel corridor with New Zealand.
“I was speaking with Prime Minister (Jacinda) Ardern this morning and we’ll continue to have our discussions about the trans-Tasman safe travel zone,” Morrison told the National Press Club in Canberra.
03:15 GMT – Doctors group in Japan warn against masks for infants
Children under the age of two shouldn’t wear masks because they can make breathing difficult and increase the risk of choking, the Japan Pediatric Association has warned.
“Masks can make breathing difficult because infants have narrow air passages,” which increases the burden on their hearts, the association said, adding that masks also raise the risk of heat stroke.
“Let’s stop the use of masks for children under 2-years-old,” the association said in a notice on its website.
It added that there had been very few serious coronavirus cases among children and that most kids became infected from family members, with almost no outbreaks at schools or day care facilities.
03:00 GMT – Mexico City registers more than 8,000 more deaths than usual
Mexico’s capital registered 8,072 more deaths in the first five months this year than the average from the same period over the previous four years, an analysis by independent researchers showed on Monday, suggesting a possible surge in fatalities to the coronavirus pandemic.
Health officials have reported 1,655 deaths from the virus in Mexico City, out of 7,394 deaths nationwide. They have also acknowledged that the true death toll is higher, but difficult to estimate because of the low testing rate.

02:50 GMT – Hong Kong airport to open for transit passengers
Hong Kong International Airport will open for some transit services from June 1, chief executive Carrie Lam said on Tuesday.
01:35 GMT – Saudi Arabia to loosen curfew from Thursday
Saudi Arabia will loosen its curfew for everywhere but Mecca from Thursday, according to the state news agency.
The curfew will be in force from 3pm (12:00 GMT) to 6am (03:00 GMT) local time.
From May 31 to June 20, it will also allow prayers in mosques with the exception of Mecca. The curfew and restrictions on prayer there will be relaxed from June 21, it said.
You can read more on that story here.
More:
01:25 GMT – South Koreans required to wear masks on public transport
South Koreans now have to wear masks whenever they use public transport or take taxis.
Health Ministry official Yoon Taeho says masks will also be required on all domestic and international flights from Wednesday.
South Korea was reporting 500 new cases every in early March before it largely stabilised its outbreak with aggressive tracking and testing. But infections have been rising slightly since early May, with more people going out during warmer weather and eased social distancing guidelines.
“Until treatments and vaccines are developed, we will never know when the COVID-19 crisis could end, and until then we will have to learn how to live with COVID-19,” Yoon said.
00:00 GMT – WHO warns of “second peak” where COVID-19 apparently in decline
The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning that countries in which coronavirus appears to be in retreat could still face an “immediate second peak” if they let up too soon on measures to halt the outbreak.
WHO emergencies head Dr Mike Ryan told an online briefing that, while cases were declining in many countries, they were still increasing in Central and South America, South Asia and Africa.
Ryan said there was a chance infection rates could rise again more quickly if measures to halt the first wave were lifted too soon.
“We need to be cognizant of the fact that the disease can jump up at any time,” he said. “We cannot make assumptions that just because the disease is on the way down now it is going to keep going down and we are get a number of months to get ready for a second wave. We may get a second peak in this wave.”
He said countries in Europe and North America should “continue to put in place the public health and social measures, the surveillance measures, the testing measures and a comprehensive strategy to ensure that we continue on a downwards trajectory and we don’t have an immediate second peak.”
Reopened shops in Europe eagerly await the return of tourism

Researchers from Imperial College London have found evidence that suggests that psilocybin, the psychoactive compound of magic mushrooms, might be useful in treating depression. Patients in the study were given two doses of psilocybin. The first dose of 10 mg was given immediately and the second dose of 25 mg was given a week after the first. The patients reported how they felt by completing clinical questionnaires. Each patient showed less depressive symptoms at the one week post-treatment mark. . “We have shown for the first time clear changes in brain activity in depressed people treated with psilocybin after failing to respond to conventional treatments,” lead author Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, head of psychedelic research at Imperial, said in a statement. A study of eleven types of mushrooms - some already used for medicinal purposes - found they increased the brain's grey matter by raising the production of a chemical called nerve growth factor (NGH). The findings, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, suggest mushrooms are a potential 'superfood' which could reduce or delay development of dementia. Researchers reviewed the scientific evidence with regard to their anti-Alzheimer's effects and found "they may fulfil a preventive function against the development of Alzheimer's disease”. Professor Vikineswary Sabaratnam, of Malaya University in Kuala Lumpur, said: "Regular consumption of the mushrooms may reduce or delay development of age-related neuro-degeneration. Adeline Joseph has been cancer-free for over 20 years and every year, after her annual doctor’s appointment, she is thankful that she still has her life. She was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in May 1995 when she was 33.
She was working as an administrative executive at the National Cancer Society of Malaysia’s (NCSM) clinic in Kuala Lumpur at the time and through her job, Adeline came face to face with cancer every day. She’d seen survivors come in for consultations and treatment and she learnt about breast health and cancer awareness and how it affects lives of women, men and their families.
She also saw that it was possible to not only survive cancer but lead a full, happy life post-treatment.
But, still, when she heard her own diagnosis, Adeline was shell-shocked.
“You can never be prepared to hear that you have cancer,” she says. “It was a blow. My immediate thought was whether I would survive this. But I was quite composed, maybe because I was more aware about the disease. Also, my sisters reminded me about all the stories I’d tell them about survivors who’d come to the clinic and how well they were doing. That gave me the strength I needed to believe that I could win this battle,” says Adeline.
You can never be prepared to hear a doctor tell you that you have cancer, says Adeline. Photo: FAIHAN GHANI/The Star
She found a lump in her left breast when she was performing a breast self-examination, something she’d started doing regularly after working at the clinic. On hindsight, she realises that being breast aware may have saved her life.
“I felt something different on my left breast. I asked my sister to check it, just for a second opinion. She too felt the lump and so, the very next day, I had a clinical examination and a mammogram done at the clinic. Because of my age, the results of the mammogram weren’t very clear, so the radiologist did an ultrasound.
“The ultrasound showed a lesion but there was no confirmation that it was cancer. I was advised to have the lump removed, which was about 1.2 to 1.5cm.
“At that point, I wasn’t worried. I thought the lump was benign. I went back for the results of the lumpectomy after a week and that’s when I was told that I had early stage cancer. I literally felt the fear of death hit me,” she shares.
http://www1.star2.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/breastcheck.mp4
Adeline had to decide between having a mastectomy or a lumpectomy. The doctor laid out the risks and then told her to go home and think about it.
“It was a really tough decision. I had so much support from my family and colleagues – some advised me against having a mastectomy as I would have to live my life with just one breast. At that time there was no option for reconstructive surgery. Others told me that it was better to remove it.
“I listened to everyone and then I deliberated. I was only 34 and thinking about settling down … would having one breast matter? In the end I decided to have a mastectomy. If I did meet someone, he would have to love me for who I am,” she says.
Adeline (in red) with her sisters Pauline (left) and Irene and her husband Mac at the Relay for Life event this year.
The surgery and treatment wasn’t easy, Adeline admits. She reacted badly to the chemotherapy and had to be given anti-nausea medication along with the medicine. And she had to go through six cycles of chemotherapy.
“It was bad. I was throwing up every day. I couldn’t even drink water and I really wanted to give up,” she says. What got her through it all was the support from her family, friends and colleagues. And although there weren’t cancer support groups at the time, a cancer survivor reached out to her and offered her the additional support she needed.
“I didn’t cry for myself but when I saw how my illness affected my parents, I felt really sad. They were so helpless watching me suffer the side effects of the treatments and I hated seeing them like that. My siblings were with me all the way – they were really fantastic and it made me realise how much love and support I had. But there were some fears that I could not share with them as I didn’t want them to worry.
“This survivor was really nice. She’d allocated time every day for me to call her. Twenty years ago, we didn’t have WhatsApp or social media, so I really appreciated that phone call every day,” says Adeline.
Now, to pay it forward, Adeline has spent the past 20 years or so of her life supporting other cancer survivors. She is the head of NCSM’s Resource and Wellness Centre that provides support for survivors and caregivers (not just of breast cancer), through their various activities which include wellness classes, talks, workshops and peer support group meetings. The centre also advises survivors on how to go about getting a fitting for their prosthesis or wig to help them cope with the changes in their bodies because of their treatment.
To pay it forward, Adeline has made it her life’s work to help others through their cancer journey.
Support, says Adeline, was crucial in her cancer journey. Apart from treatment, cancer patients need emotional and psycho-social support too.
“My work became a lot more meaningful. I began to speak to the other survivors more and patients who had just been diagnosed. That’s when I began my work in peer support. It was really satisfying because I knew how important support is to a patient. A cancer diagnosis is a big deal. It is like nothing you would have experienced before and often it leaves you feeling alone and helpless.
“You don’t know how to react or what to do. But when you talk to a fellow survivor … someone who has been through it and has come out of it, you feel better. You are motivated to get better. Ladies tend to want to share their emotions and men seem to want information. We try and help them all,” says Adeline.

(ts-24)

This is what women's pubic hair looks like around the world
http://fashion-trendin.com/this-is-what-womens-pubic-hair-looks-like-around-the-world/
This is what women's pubic hair looks like around the world
Personally, I’ve been grooming my downstairs department since the age of 15. Over that time, I’ve tried many different hairstyles. I’ve shaven, I’ve plucked. I’ve been waxed professionally, and amateur-ly (by myself and a lovely, but definitely not trained lady in Thailand). And now I’ve settled on a completely hair-free foof thanks to ice laser.
But one woman’s wonderfully smooth vagina is not all women’s vaginas. And if you’ve ever been curious about what’s going on inside the underwear of women in different corners of the world, you’ve come to the right place…
Our groins are the ‘most groomed’ area
According to Advanced Dermatology, 68 per cent of women groom the front area of their groin, a close second to our underarms, which sits at 67 per cent. The most popular method is said to be by using a manual razor every few days, a habit most of us started in high school.
Most of us prefer it trimmed and tidy
The same study revealed that when it comes to our style preferences, 47 per cent of us like to keep it at a ‘trimmed’ length. 29 per cent like to go the full bald eagle, 19 per cent leave it au naturale, and five per cent just like a little shaping.
We’re not so embarrassed by our bush
If embarrassment is ever felt for fuzz, it appears we’re pretty unphased about our vaginas. Women say hairy underarms, legs or the upper lip are the top three they tend to feel most self-conscious about.
Can you use threading to remove hair on your bikini line? We asked the experts
Worldwide waxing trends
You may be surprised by the different waxing trends that are emerging. But when it comes to the most popular in each country, we tend to keep it pretty traditional.
Cynthia Chua, CEO and Founder of Ministry of Waxing – a company personally responsible for pruning over four million bushes in twelve cities, says they’ve observed the following in their stores…
“Women in Singapore are very progressive; they have long moved from bikini to Brazilian waxing. And they have moved beyond waxing into vulva care. Rosebud Rejuvenation, a non-invasive anti-ageing vulva facial, is one of our most popular treatments in Singapore.”
“In large markets like China, local are now slowly gravitating towards bikini and Brazilian waxes, when before most of our clients were expats.”
As for dear old London town? Apparent we’re very similar to New York, in that we are mature markets when it comes to hair removal services, but we’re yet to embrace non-invasive vulva care solutions that appeal to the masses.
“We’ve also recently opened a store in Mumbai, and beyond the treatment, we notice that there’s an increasing want for a higher standard of service of hygiene, speed and quality. Consumers are looking for reliable brands with proven standards.”
“As for cities like Manila, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, we are receiving more customers interested in Brazilian wax.”
And now you know more than is really necessary about pubic hair. You’re welcome.
