Homemaking tip:
Make your bed first thing in the morning, open up your curtains/blinds, and open the window if weather allows (even if it’s not great weather ideally you should have all the windows in the house open for at least five minutes). This is cliche advice, but it truly does make a difference. It automatically makes the room look cleaner, and gives you the signal that it’s time to start the day.

Today we celebrate the martyrdom of the Hieromartyr Lucian of Antioch. Saint Lucian was orphaned at the age of 12 and so he distributed all his possessions to the poor and sought guidance from the confessor Macarius in Edessa. Here he learnt the scriptures and the ascetic life. Having excelled in virtue and preached the gospel to the Jews and pagans, he was ordained a presbyter (priest). He opened a school in Antioch which taught the Holy Scriptures and how to live a virtuous life. He even corrected mistranslations and heretical additions to the Greek Septuagint. During the persecution of Diocletian, Saint Lucian was taken prisoner for 9 years where he encouraged his fellow prisoners not to give up the good fight. Just before his death, the holy presbyter wished to receive communion for the last time, and so, bound to a spiked bed in chains and shackles, he performed the Divine Liturgy in the prison, using his own chest as the Holy Altar. The day after when the soldiers went to see if the Saint was alive, he confessed three times, "I am a Christian" and then his soul departed to the Lord. The soldiers threw his body into the sea, however two dolphins miraculously brought it ashore where a pious Christian took the body and buried it. The Honourable Saint Helen built a church over where his relics were buried. May he intercede for us all + #saint #lucian #presbyter #antioch #antiochian #lebanon #martyr #hieromartyr #confessor #ascetic #asceticism #virtue #spirituallife #spiritual #septuagint #prayer #holy #venerable #helen #sainthelen #sthelen #dolphin #dolphins #miracle #miraculous #communion #holycommunion #martyr #martyrdom #orthodox #saintoftheday (at İzmit-Kocaeli) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjtO0XUL6wd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

apolytikion for righteous john cassian the confessor (28 february)
the image of God, was faithfully preserved in you, O Father. For you took up the Cross and followed Christ. By Your actions you taught us to look beyond the flesh for it passes, rather to be concerned about the soul which is immortal. Wherefore, O Holy John Cassian, your soul rejoices with the angels

Update: Over on Orthodox Twitter, OrthoX, whatever we're calling it, they're STILL arguing over whether unbaptized babies are damned. Someone shared a screenshot from an Antiochian Archdiocese's website where it explicitly says Orthodoxy does NOT teach that unbaptized babies immediately go to hell, and there are Orthobros straight-up responding like, "Well, that's wrong."
I just...there are no words. Why even be Orthodox at that point? Why not be Protestant if you're just going to ignore everything bishops and priests have to say on a subject whenever it disagrees with your personal opinion?
Plus, there's something really deranged about gleefully arguing in favor of innocent babies burning in hell. This is a good lesson for all catechumens out there to not go looking on social media for your theological education.

M*A*S*H characters & their religious affiliations
Despite never having been particularly religious personally, I'm a sucker for religious themes in media, and M*A*S*H is absolutely full of them. To that end, I set out to compile a list of all the main characters and their religious affiliations (or lack thereof). I started writing this as a reference guide for myself, but I thought it might be handy for other people! I tried to be as comprehensive as I could, but I wouldn't be surprised if I missed a line or two somewhere in the 100 hours of TV or the novels I've only just started reading (or some real-world context that could fill in the gaps), so if anyone has anything to add here, please feel free! Shoutout to the MASHoles Discord server for catching a couple of these!
This is a long one, so I'm putting it under a cut.
Hawkeye: Agnostic. In the original novel he was stated to have been raised Baptist, but this is never brought up in the show. Popular fanon holds that TV!Hawkeye was raised in an either Jewish or interfaith household, based primarily on his frequent use of Yiddish, and I'm partial to that headcanon myself, but I admit it probably wasn't intentional. Though if it is the case, it seems that his family never kept kosher (and he certainly doesn't as an adult), as he mentioned his father cooking bacon for him as a child in Sons and Bowlers.
Trapper: Either agnostic or atheist, but heavily implied to be a lapsed Catholic (in the show, at least. It's made explicit in the novel.) I have a whole separate post with screenshots related to this here.
Henry: Not much to work off of here, but we know what he's not, as he states in Life With Father that his country club doesn't admit Catholics. I couldn't find any strong evidence pointing to any particularly likely Protestant denomination for him, but Methodist, Baptist or Lutheran seem to be the most plausible based on the general demographic data I was able to find.
Radar: Stated to be Methodist in Dear Sis.
Margaret: Even less to go off of than Henry. Her family is implied to be Irish, but there's never any suggestion that she's a practicing Catholic, which seems like something that would come up at some point if it were the case, so I would say she's likely Protestant of some description. As an army brat, she doesn't have a hometown I can look up the demographics of.
Frank: Definitely Protestant (he refers derisively to a Catholic living across the street from him in Hot Lips and Empty Arms). No indication that I can recall of his particular denomination, but Indiana has a strong Evangelical tradition, which tracks for him.
Mulcahy: Catholic, obviously, but we can narrow that down, as he specifically mentions attending Jesuit school in Dear Dad... Again. Catholicism is considered a single denomination unto itself, but the order he belongs to is an extra degree of specificity (and quite possibly the same tradition Trapper was raised in, as his middle names, Francis Xavier, come from one of the co-founders of the Jesuits).
Klinger: Is stated multiple times to be an atheist. There seems to be a bit of contention as to his religious background, but for my money I think the most likely answer is that he was raised in some Orthodox denomination. Some point to his use of the name Allah in Run for the Money as evidence that he was raised Muslim, and that's not out of the question, but that's just the Arabic word for God, and is also used by Christians in the Arabic-speaking world, which Lebanon has a large population of. Conversely, his statement that he "gave up" atheism for Lent in The Kids makes me more inclined to believe that he was raised Christian. It's also worth noting that a lot of details from Klinger's life were pulled directly from that of Jamie Farr, who was raised in the Antiochian Orthodox Church, so in the absence of anything more concrete I don't think it's too much of a stretch to assume that the same might be true of Klinger.
BJ: Makes a reference to losing his faith since coming to Korea in The Winchester Tapes. Klinger refers to him as having "Presbyterian features" in Fade Out, Fade In, which is as close as we come to any actual indication of what denomination he belonged to. Hawkeye refers to him as a WASP in Death Takes A Holiday, so definitely some Protestant denomination.
Potter: Stated to be Methodist in his debut episode.
Charles: Stated to be Presbyterian in Dear Sis. This actually struck me as odd, as Boston Brahmins as a class have strong ties to Anglicanism, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have returned back to the faith after a lapse in my youth (was raised Antiochian Greek Orthodox from a mixed Arab Asian household) and have found such joy and comfort in your tumblr along others. I was wondering if you recommend any good audiobooks regarding learning more about one's Orthodox faith outside of church. I have a visual reading issue so audiobooks or podcasts appreciated. God bless you ❤️
A precious lamb has returned to the flock. It is meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost and is now found. Glory to God!
Some of my favorite audio and video Orthodox resources are the free audiobooks recorded in St. Anthony Orthodox Monastery in Arizona. (<- that is a clickable link) They have audiobooks in a multitude of languages: English, Greek, Russian, Arabic, and Romanian. I highly recommend the book about St. Joseph the Hesychast. He is my spiritual father’s spiritual father’s spiritual father. (lol) So he is like my spiritual great-grandfather? It’s a very interesting and lovely book, although I think the recording for it is not yet finished.
I also LOVE watching the lives of the saints as presented by Trisagion Films on YouTube! Youtube is trash so use an adblocker, BUT Trisagion Films makes great edifying content. They sketch Byzantine style drawings of the saints and scenes in their lives and animate them, adding music and narration.
One of my favorite videos from them is about the life of St. Gabriel the Fool-for-Christ. (link) He was a saint of recent times, most famous for when he burned a large portrait of Lenin during a communist rally.
They also have one for the life of Saint Porphyrios, another recent saint. The video is pretty much the summarized version of the book about him, which we read in the book club. St. Porphyrios, although blind, was a clairvoyant saint who was able to see with his spiritual eyes.
One of the priests at a monastery I frequent actually met Saint Porphyrios. He told me that Saint Porphyrios was so well aware of his surroundings, that the priest I know didn’t learn he was blind during their meeting until somebody else told him later on after they met.
If you would like, you can join Panagia’s Garden Book Club too! We would love to have you. We share Orthodox Christian books, hymns, and currently we are trying to read the Gospel of James before Christmas. Send me a message and I will send you the Discord invite link.
God bless you, dear friend. Please tell me your name so I can add you to my prayers.

Chronicon Romualdi II, archiepiscopi Salernitani, p. 16
Beatrice was born around 1135 in the county of Rethel (northern France) from Gunther (also know as Ithier) de Vitry, earl of Rethel, and Beatrice of Namur.
On her mother’s side, Beatrice descended from Charlemagne (through his son, Louis the Pious), while on the paternal side she was a grandniece of Baldwin II King of Jerusalem (her paternal grandmother Matilda, titular Countess of Rethel, was the King’s younger sister). The Counts of Rethel were also vassals of the powerful House of Champagne, known for its successful marriage politics (Count Theobald IV of Blois-Champagne’s daughter, Isabelle, would marry in 1143 Duke Roger III of Apulia, eldest son of King Roger II of Sicily).
In 1151, Beatrice married this same Roger. The King of Sicily was at his third marriage at this point. His first wife had been Elvira, daughter of King Alfonso VI the Brave of León and Castile and of Galicia, who bore him six children (five sons and one daughter). However, when four of his sons (Roger, Tancred, Alphonse and the youngest, Henry) died before him, leaving only William as his heir, Roger II must have feared for his succession. In 1149, the King then married Sibylla, daughter of Duke Hugh II of Burgundy. She bore him a son, Henry (named after his late older brother), and two years later died of childbirth complications giving birth to a stillborn son. As this second Henry died young too, Roger thought about marrying for a third (and hopefully last) time.
It is possible that Roger’s choice of his third wife had been influenced by the future bride’s family ties with the Crusader royalties as Beatrice was related with both Queen Melisende of Jerusalem and the Queen’s niece Constance of Hauteville, ruling Princess of Antioch. Constance was also a first cousin once removed of Roger, who had (unsuccessfully) tried to snatch the Antiochian principality from her when her father Bohemond II was killed in battle 1130, leaving his two years old daughter as heir.
Beatrice bore Roger only a daughter, Constance, who was born in Palermo on November 2nd 1154. This baby girl (who would one day become Queen of Sicily) never knew her father as he died on February 26th.
Nothing certain is known about her widowed life, although we can suppose she took care of her only daughter. Beatrice died in Palermo on March 30th 1185, living enough to see  Constance being betrothed to Emperor Frederick Barbarossa’s son, Henry.
The body of the Dowager Queen was laid to rest in the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, together with her predecessor, Elvira, and her step-children, Henry, Tancred, Alphonse and Roger. Through her daughter, Beatrice would become Emperor Frederick II’s grandmother.

Today, on the fourth Sunday of Lent we celebrate the Venerable John, Abbot of Sinai and author of the Ladder of Divine Ascent (or the Climacus). This indispensable book stands as a witness to the great effort needed for entrance into God’s Kingdom (Mt.10: 12). The spiritual struggle of the Christian life is a real one, “not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers of the present darkness the hosts of wickedness in heavenly places” (Eph 6:12). Saint John encourages the faithful in their efforts for, according to the Lord, only “he who endures to the end will be saved” (Mt.24:13). The troparion of Saint John is chanted by St. Kassiani Antiochian Archdiocese Choir of Australia.
