Fluffbruary 12: Incandescent
A continuation of the dream dates from Fluffbruary 2!
Find all my @fluffbruary ficlets on AO3 here.
Fandom: The Sandman (2022)
Relationship: Dream of the Endless/Hob Gadling
Hob realizes he’s dreaming as soon as he appears on the London streets. It’s dusk and the streetlamps begin to flicker on, the arc lights much dimmer than the LED lights he’s used to these days. He smiles, remembering his astonishment that no one had to light them. He looks down at his clothes, another clue to which period he’s in. Ah. The 1880s, before their meeting.
He’s dressed in a fine suit. The black wool of his trousers and waistcoat keep him warm in the brisk air and he notices a distinct lack of itchiness. Much higher quality than the suits he typically wore in these days. His waistcoat covers the edge of his trousers precisely, the contrast between its bright white and the trousers striking. Hob brushes his fingers over the mother-of-pearl buttons, their iridescence shining in the dim light. At last, he notices the fine cotton shirt, its stiff-winged collar brushing his jaw. He fingers the silk tie, its color and texture reminding him of someone’s skin.
At that thought, he senses someone behind him. He takes a step to turn and join them when he is stopped in his tracks. Dream is, quite literally, stunning. His suit is styled similar to Hob’s own, except he is distinctly missing the “white tie” portion of the dress. His waistcoat is a deep black, glimmering with stars, and at his throat is a crimson silk tie. Hob’s fingers twitch at the contrast between Dream’s skin and the tie. He moves his eyes higher, seeing Dream’s top hat. It is then that his head feels oddly light. Gathering his wits, he floats toward Dream.
“You seem to have forgotten something.” From nowhere, Dream pulls out a top hat to match his own and a pair of white gloves. Hob takes them from Dream’s hands, hidden away by his own black gloves.
“You know me,” he grins. “What would I do without you?” He perches the hat upon his head and slips the gloves on, offering a hand to Dream. “Shall we? Do whatever we are dressed so finely for?”
The corners of Dream’s mouth curl up in a smile as he delicately takes Hob’s hand.
“We are going,” he begins to walk. “To the opera.”
Hob chuckles. “I suppose that does make sense, considering the getup. And what show are we seeing, my dear?”
“Patience.”
“Alright, alright, I’ll wait. I’m sure the theatre isn’t far.”
Dream smiles, in the way Hob knows means he has something he’s not telling him. They make their way up the street until Dream comes to a stop in front of the Savoy Theatre. The lights inside are different from what Hob remembers of the theatres he visited in those days, but he can’t quite put his finger on it. Nonetheless, he follows Dream’s lead and heads toward the doors.
That’s when it hits him: Electricity! The incandescent bulbs emit a warm glow, casting the room in orange. He sucks in a breath and looks at Dream.
“You didn’t—”
“I think you will find that I did, beloved.”
He looks like the cat that ate the cream in this moment. Hob files through the centuries of history in his head as Dream hands the tickets to the usher. Dream tugs on his sleeve, bringing him back to the here and now. He offers his arm to Dream, who slips his hand through the bend in his elbow. Though he realizes it is a dream, Hob puffs his chest out as everyone turns their heads to look at the pair. It is satisfying to have the most beautiful creature in the universe on his arm, to know that everyone is jealous that he is his.
Dream is, of course, playing into Hob’s wish—his dream—that he could have taken Dream out on dates throughout his long life. In a blink, they are on the balcony overlooking the stage, in a private box. The orchestra is warming up, sounds of strings humming and musicians fiddling with their tuning pegs and slides. The pair settle in their seats, Hob finding Dream’s hand and settling on the armrest between them.
“Now will you tell me what the show we’re seeing is?” He looks at Dream. He is so beautiful in the dim light, the orange hue reflecting off his skin to make him seem to glow from inside.
“As I said before, Patience.” He produces a program. Hob examines it. The front page is busy: filled with flowers, birds, and a woman lying in the grass. The show is indeed called Patience. He flips through the pages, where maidens of all types decorate the page. He gets the idea that the show is mocking the aesthetic movement that was popular in these days. He sets the program on his lap.
“You tricky creature! I understand now.” He smiles at Dream. “Why this one?” “You mentioned taking me to historic events. I believe the first stage lit by electric light counts?” Dream rumbles.
“I suppose it does. Now come here.” He slips his hand free from Dream’s and brings it up to his cheek. He had forgotten how infuriating gloves were now that he cannot be skin to skin with his love. He leans in to kiss Dream gently, softly, keeping chaste but still impressing all his love into the kisses. He pulls back as the lights begin to dim.
A man comes out onto the stage with a glowing lightbulb. He welcomes everyone to the theatre and announces that tonight will be the first night the entire stage will be lit by electricity. Then, he breaks the bulb. The crowd begins to murmur, worried that the room would catch fire.
He smiles and says, “Completely safe! Now enjoy our show.” The orchestra begins to play the overture as he walks away.
Hob wraps an arm around Dream’s shoulders and presses a kiss to Dream’s cheek. This was going to be a fine night at the opera.
A/N: Man, I love doing a bunch of research to make my blorbos kiss in the 1800s times. Patience is a Gilbert and Sullivan opera that satirizes the aesthetic movement and pretentiousness. It opened at the Savoy on October 10, 1881 to an auditorium that was fully lit electrically, though the stage was still lit by gas lamp. On December 28, 1881, the stage was finally lit by electric light, where the owner really did come onstage and break a bulb to demonstrate its safety! The show ran at the Savoy until November 22, 1882. It's a pretty fun show, I recommend giving it a listen! G&S wrote entertaining music and a lot of patter songs (my personal fave in musical theatre).
The program I described can be found here. This particular example is from opening night, but from my research it looks like they used the same design (albeit with different color inks) throughout the show's run!

Tanna Talk: This Week in the Rogue Trader (Video Game) AO3 fandom (March 24- 30 2024)
Tumblr media
"Oh, yes, a dance was never just a dance. It was also a display of the soul. It was love, and war, and didn’t they say that all was fair in love and war ?" - Tapestry of Fate, Ch. 34.
Lots of new plot bunnies this week in the trenches. Anyway, this is user aylinvail reporting to you live over vox caster from the Starseeker Bridge.
Cool new fics
Maybe the fic did something new. Maybe it innovated. Maybe it's an entirely new concept we haven't seen yet. A non-comprehensive list.
Two sides of the same Aquila - An AU where the Warrant of Trade is held by two most incompatible individuals in the Koronus Expanse. A series of pivotal moments of their relationship where they need to learn to share the power, space and an Interrogator in order to make it out alive. BOY THAT IS FRESH @vitanithepure.
Eliminate - A fic about Epitaph and Calcazar telling Heinrix to kill you. Told in 500 brilliant bittersweet words. @pycnolite's masterclass in how to keep it short and sweet.
Omega von Valancius - OMG @pallysuune has finally brought us the first A/B/O RT fic. As an omega, Violet von Valancius wasn't fit to be the Rogue Trader, and everyone around her seemed to know it too. But no one was more vocal about it than her so-called-peer. Can her actions ever earn his respect, or will she forever be lesser in his eyes?
The First Engagement - I know, I know, but listen. Have you seen a Lord Captain Heinrix x Interrogator RT yet? No. Fits here. Anyway, if you wanted to see what Heinrix is like as a jackass who "summers" in Janus, here ya go.
Who updated?
Here are the longfics that updated this week.
Starseeker - Heinrix/RT intrigue rewrite of game events with Kunrad-related canon divergence. And a shoujo romance.
gossamer of starlight - RT/Yrliet. Yrliet watches her elantach's dynasty fall apart in slow motion. Non chronological.
Predator & Prey - RT/Marazhai. Aurelia von Valancius has a secret. Marazhai Aezyrraesh has a craving. They're perfectly matched opposites, so long as as they can overcome their differences.
Theatre of Hearts - RT/Nocturne of Oblivion arranged marriage. And from what I hear, getting really cultural difference-flavor of interesting.
Much ado about the Lord Captain - A Comedy of Terrors - RT/Heinrix. A retelling of Rogue Trader with tons of pining. A forest of pine trees. And smut.
Immortalium - RT/Heinrix. NEW! From @cawyden-gaming. The story follows Venria von Valancius on her journey of coming to terms with her past and present.
Iron Maidens - Multiship. An Iron Widow x Rogue Trader crossover.
Omnissiah Forgive Me - RT/Pasqal. Pasqal Haneumann owes his life to the Lord Captain, Kassard. When he joined the Lord Captain's retinue, Pasqal found he had got more than he had bargained for. For the Lord Captain was enough for Pasqal's faith to be shaken to its core.
My Knight So Daring - An Imperial Knight!Heinrix x noble!RogueTrader arranged marriage AU. And from what I hear, getting really hot.
Into Temptation - RT/Marazhai/Heinrix. Former Ministorum Priest now Rogue Trader Cassius Von Valancius must contend with his heretical desires for Marazhai. Matters become even more complicated as his feelings for Heinrix Van Calox deepen.
Edge of Daybreak Unbroken - RT/Heinrix. Heretic Rogue Trader gets brought back to the start of the game. Time travel shenanigans ensue.
Once we were - RT/Heinrix. A story following the events of the game, in which Imogene von Valancius allied her dynasty with Xavier Calcazar and brought peace and prosperity to the Koronus Expanse. But neither last long, and the line between hero and heretic is always blurred.
Domino Effect - Multi. Betrayal is terrible. It never comes from one's foes. But instead from those closest. It comes from a place of safety. Of love.
Addendums
they go here. for in case there are late night updates. im out of spoons bros.

the post is getting Too Long on my blog and it’s breaking my poor phone so. WHEE. new one!
gang sails off into the distance! and by “distance” I mean they’re high-tailing it into the Assassin servers in order to regroup and recuperate and figure out what the fuck to do now since. well. hey, they retrieved Desmond and they’ve kept him safe! uh. now what. if there were other Assassins’ memories in Abstergo, how long until they gain sentience as well? and how the fuck did Desmond and Jacob find a movie projector on the ship?
Desmond is still kind of reeling from everything that’s just happened, and to his surprise, despite the whole awkwardness surrounding Uh Fuckin Everything, the Kenways are willing to take him in, altho Edward somewhat morbidly jokes that their dysfunctional family being an improvement over his is really kind of sad when he thinks about it. then he offers to let him take a turn at the wheel—he needs to go see what they’ve done to the captain’s cabin anyway, he wasn’t able to since the collision and it’s probably messed with a few things.
they do need a base to operate out of for the time being. Davenport Manor is suggested, then somewhat reluctantly shot down bc of the two Templars around who are immediately like yeah uh No. Café Theatre is too cramped, although in a pinch it could do. the Frye twins’ train has little to offer in the way of bedrooms. Monteriggioni is considered and makes it into a top five list, only losing bc an entire town is a little too big and prone to glitches. (Desmond is a little peeved about it.) eventually everyone settles on finding a version of Great Inagua in the Assassin servers and regrouping there so they can figure out their next move. and maybe Edward is a little bit smug over it.
I do like the idea of Desmond teaching the gang how to really break shit in Abstergo, like—Juno is still in there, and there’s a possibility there might be more sentient data representations of dead Assassins (and dead Templars) rolling around now in the servers. Ezio shudders to think of Juno at the same time that Shay does, and they’re both concerned about the idea of Juno being able to simply possess somebody, and if she’s able to do that in the digital realm, there’s the lingering possibility of her being able to do that to an actual flesh and blood person. which nobody wants! so that’s on their priority list. and also all the other possibly-sentient people who might be running around the servers.
Arno and the twins and Henry listen to all of this, then sit in contemplation. then all three of them are like. oh shit we have to check on our simulations bc Lydia and Elise might also be gaining sentience and god KNOWS what they’re doing right now without us. who wants to come with, we’ve got spare clothes for you. (aka: how to justify the legacy outfits lol.)
The “Too Long Post” which was about the playable characters in Abstergo’s games gaining sentience for easy reference. (And considering we ended it after they got away, we can count that as Arc 1 XD)
Honestly, I think the only valid locations for their homebase would be the Great Inagua or Davenport Homestead because they also need to park their ship (depending on who you ask, it’s either called ‘Aquila’ or ‘Jackdaw’) and the Seine river would be hard to navigate while the Thames is chock-full of other ships and boats and the moving train means they can’t always get to the ship quickly. Also, they all try to fit in the mansion that Edward had ‘commandeered’ but it becomes clear that there is a division. Altaïr, Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton took the rooms nearest to Desmond. Haytham took the room furthest away from everyone and Shay took the room to his left. Shao Jun took the empty room nearest to Ezio while Aveline took the empty room nearest to Ratonhnhaké:ton. Jacob’s the only one who went ‘whichever room is free’ and Arno took the room furthest away from Shay which sorta put him between Jacob and an empty room that Evie took for herself. Jacob joked of Jayadeep just sharing a room with Evie so he took the room on the other side of Jacob instead, making Jacob roll his eyes. Edward just took his old room (which was the largest room). So… they might be in this together but they’re definitely not exactly the bestest of allies at the moment.
Desmond taught them what he knew, things he didn’t know when he was alive but he just… knew once he ‘woke up’. He doesn’t even know if these skills came from his memory of Clay or from his memory of Dionysus (holy shit, his Isu ancestor was the god of wine and debauchery? What the fuck???) but he wasn’t going to reject such a boon. He’s quiet about his life though, only sharing a bit if anyone asked about what they saw.
And the only one who asked was a worried Shao Jun because Shay was keeping his distance and the others either didn’t have such a bad memory to watch (Aveline, Evie and Jayadeep) or didn’t even see any memory (Jacob and Arno).
The ones connected to Desmond though… Desmond told them everything. Even Edward who was just in the room with the three people who had the biggest urge to find Desmond and Haytham who Edward believes had been affected just as much by the time they started to piece Desmond back together. Edward provided the alcohol back then (although Altaïr did not partake) and they finished more than five bottles of Edward’s hardest liquor. He was especially worried for Haytham who grabbed an entire unopened bottle and just started topping his glass with it and ended up finishing it and still requesting his glass to be filled afterward.
Are we talking about the Juno in Desmond’s dataspace or the real Juno in digital space? Because if it’s the real Juno and this is set after Syndicate BUT before the comics where she died, then Juno is out in the real world (which would give us an excuse to have our sentient Assassins travel into other corners of the internet XD).
However, I do like the idea that they’ve unintentionally created Juno 2.0 from Desmond’s memory of her (and also a bit of Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton’s memories). This also gives Ratonhnhaké:ton a reason to want to take her down since she… technically didn’t lie but she absolutely used Ratonhnhaké:ton and gave him the short stick in that deal. (With her past misgivings to Ratonhnhaké:ton, Edward would be on board and maybe even Haytham once he learned how everything had been set into stones because of the path the Isus have chosen the world to walk to, including how the Kenway family ended).
You know what would be fun? If they made the grievous assumption that the data are gaining sentient while they were gone BUT the real reason why they’re slowly gaining sentient is because all sentient data (them) are still connected to the virus that started this all. Now, the virus was fast-acting in Abstergo because it was meant to fuck shit up there but the virus also have a failsafe that makes it dormant when it knows it’s no longer in Abstergo’s servers. But… the virus itself might be dormant but constant exposure to it will still affect data.
… wanna make Arno have a bad time once more? Élise is slowly waking up and she starts remembering…
The many times Arno repeated her death, together with the pain and rage that consumed her during those days, not knowing Arno repeated that memory over and over again to try and save her.
You gotta wonder… if Élise would even be happy to see Arno once more when her most lived memory was her death.
(Also… Lydia would be fine being sentient since she loves her grandaunt and granddad who raised her but… remember… Jack the Ripper is also in the servers).

Callie blinks.
She bites her lip and averts her eyes, shifting uncomfortably in her seat. "I, uh- me? Me??? Really? You don't wanna direct it all at Volps?"
A muffled affirmative rings out from behind the fourth wall. Callie blanches. "Seriously. She's way more interesting. You'd get way more mileage."
A shaky hand runs through her hair- nails slightly sharp, skin slightly flushed. She inhales, then exhales. Her eyes dim and her jaw wavers. "I... guess I like to knead things when I'm stressed. And, uh, my favorite drink is milk? Does that count?"
Silence.
One second passes. Two. Three. Callie huffs and buries her face in her hands, drawing her knees close to her chest as she leans back rather precariously in her chair. "I don't- I don't know. I can't think of another one. I don't like talking about myself. I'm not half as interesting as you might think. Can we please move on now?"
-
Volpi grins and eagerly shuffles all the way forward in her chair, digging the edges of her prosthetic into cushioned fabric. She clicks her tongue and lays out both hands in a dramatic array- almost akin to a dealer spreading a deck of cards- then lowers seven fingers and counts on three.
"I used to dig random holes in the backyard for no reason when I was a kit. I'm the reigning champion at royal guard karaoke night. And," she pauses like a theatre actor, "I've beaten His Majesty King Altair Aquilae at chess no less than seven whole times."
She pauses once more after this. Clearly expecting applause. As though she's under the impression these are all amazing and jaw-dropping feats.
The only-slightly-metaphorical interviewer behind the fourth wall doesn't clap, but they do (presumably) act sufficiently awed. Volpi beams like she's the star of a show.
-
"Oh." Rin squeaks with her face flushed onyx. "It's my turn now?"
She tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear. One minute passes. Two minutes pass. Her tail twitches frantically against her thighs.
"I like drawing." she whispers so low it's barely audible. "And I made Volpi's scarf for her birthday a few years ago and she hasn't taken it off since. And- and, I, um, I think cats are really really cute?"
Silence.
She blinks frantically behind her glasses and seems to don the guise of a very shy weasel trying desperately to hide between her own fingers. "Did I do that right?"
-
Perci blinks like a lizard. Weird tongue-eye-licking and all.
He flutters his wings. He cocks his head exactly 30 degrees like some sort of strange feral parrot-shaped-like-a-child. He raps his palms against the edge of his booster seat in a manner not wholly unlike a spider. He opens his mouth and his every word comes out as illegible song.
He doesn't seem to really understand the question. Or maybe he does, and he just doesn't know how to put his answers into words mortals can easily comprehend.
....either way, that's probably all you'll be getting out of him.

I am reading old drafts of Star Wars Scripts and I suspect I have just run into the "original" Clone Wars idea.
From the first available draft of Star Wars, Scene 61:
61. MEDICAL CENTER BLUE - UNDERGROUND FORTRESS - AQUILAE The general enters a stark white waiting area filled with scholarly looking gentlemen. An attendant greets General Skywalker and takes him into a small observation chamber overlooking a large operating theatre. An elderly doctor greets him. DOCTOR Good to see you, General. I'm afraid we're not quite ready yet. Thank God you'll be the one taking them, though. An attendant brings in one of the scholars from the waiting area and places him on a large operating table surrounded by strange looking equipment. An ominous looking clamp is placed on the man's head. GENERAL How many are going? DOCTOR Thirty-three of the greatest scientific minds in our System…A high price for freedom. GENERAL Thirty-three scientists! Transporting a group that size, undetected… I don't… DOCTOR Don't worry, General. All you'll be taking are their minds. The doctor moves over to a safe-like cabinet guarded by two attendants. The doctor gingerly picks up a small clear vial filled with grey fluid. It has a label which reads: Faubun, Astro-dynamics…In the background the scholar on the operating table is undergoing a form of mechanized brain surgery. GENERAL "Bloodory's distillation?" DOCTOR Yes. It has been greatly perfected. The brain is condensed into five ounces of fluid. Cloning cell samples are included so that a structural duplicate of the scientist can be reproduced. When the duplicate child reaches the age of six, he or she begins a series of injections of the brain fluid. By the age of ten years, they have received all the knowledge and memory of an experienced scientist: an old mind in a young body. We have prepared a special shock-belt to carry the vials. In the background, the limp body of the scholar on the operating table is removed and another scientist is escorted into the operating threatre.
Sounds like a good way to start a Clone War to me. Especially if the Bloodory Distillation Procedure were to be used on someone very important. Say an Emperor. Who is entitled to the throne when some 10 year old shows up claiming to the former Emperor who should never have been replaced?
Also calls up a significant bit of Dune which Lucas has acknowledged as one of his major inspirations. Which is yet another alternative. What happens if the equivalent of Alia Atreides happens? One mind getting the "ancestral memories" of their adult predecessors?
I might be biased though. I admit, until Attack of the Clones came out, I always expected the Clones of the Clone Wars to be a relatively limited set of VIPs. A few elite Jedi or Sith warriors (again, such as the Emperor as in the Dark Empire books) OR very influential politicians or rulers (ditto).
While an entire galactic army cloned off of one person to do all the fighting is cool, it just never quite enamored me as much as that kind of idea of the Clone as an elite that caused the fight.

Library of Celsus
Ephesus, Turkey
2nd century CE
The Library of Celsus was built in the first quarter of the 2nd century CE to serve as a heroon, that is, a burial monument dedicated to Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaeanus, the Roman senator and proconsul of Asia. The construction was financed by his son, Tiberius Iulius Aquila, who also bequeathed a large amount to the city for the purchase of books. The architect of the building remains unknown. Its luxurious facade is the western boundary of the area of Low Embolos and forms an impressive architectural complex.
The Library of Celsus has an eastern aspect. A staircase with 9 steps led from the square of the Agora to the facade of the Library. The steps at the top of the staircase were flanked by two pedestals with erected statues. The facade of the building, 21 m long and 16 m high, was made from solid marble plinths positioned according to the pseudo-isodomic system of rectangular masonry. The architectural style, including protruding small temples crowned with triangular and curved pediments, was very common in the eastern part of the empire. There are two floors and each floor has 8 monolithic columns without ribs. The columns are made of marble from the imperial quarries of Dokimeion in Phrygia. The columns of the first floor have a smooth shaft and an Attic base, formed by two convex cymas surrounding a concave one. The columns are arranged in pairs, although each of them is based on a separate quadrilateral pedestal and ends in complex capitals, which combine the Ionic and the Corinthian order. The crushed entablature of the first floor, consisting of a three-banded epistyle and a cincture with relief decorative motifs of vegetation and concave-convex cymas, is based on the columns.
On the front wall there were three doors. The pilasters and their lintels were adorned with motifs of vegetation, relief figures and concave-convex cymatia. The central door was wider than the two side ones. Through these doors the visitors entered the interior of the monument. Above the entrances there were ‘windows’ lightening the interior of the Library.
On the front wall and between the doors there were niches surrounded by pillars. The pillars were richly adorned with relief motifs of vegetation and mythological figures: Bellerophon riding Pegasus and the whimsical couple of Eros and Psyche darting from acanthus leaves. Twelve relief fasces and some axes remind that Celsus was a senator. The central figure on the frieze of the epistyle is an eagle. Tendrils of grapevine and ivy are twined around the pillars of the upper floor, while scenes of the life of Apollo and Dionysus are depicted as well.
The interior of the niches was adorned with four statues representing female abstract concepts: Sofia (‘Wisdom’), Arete (‘Virtue’), Ennoia (‘Insight’) and Episteme (‘Knowledge’). They are personifications of the virtues of Celsus but also of the virtues the life of high Roman officials should have had. The statues are today exhibited in the Museum of Ephesus in Vienna, while the monument accommodates their plaster casts.
The arrangement of the upper floor was similar to the low floor. The pairs of the columns are based on the same oblong pedestal and had capitals of Corinthian order. The protruding small temples are crowned with triangular and curved pediments interchangeably. In the corners of the pediments there were akroteria, not preserved today, while at the far end of the small temples there were ‘windows’ corresponding to the openings of the low floor. Between the small temples there were pedestals with statues of the owners. In particular, three of them represented Celsus and one Aquila. Each end of the upper floor formed a protrusion supported by a column. The building gave the illusion that it was higher and wider, which must have been the aim of the architects. The rich architectural and relief decoration, the facade with the ‘prostyle’ small temples crowned with curved and sharp-topped pediments, the niches with the architectural elements and the statues, all contribute to the formation of a three-dimensional image and are strongly influenced by the facades of the stages of Roman theatres. It is worth mentioning here that the surface of the facade is much similar to the facades of the Nymphaeum of Miletus (69-96), the North Gate of the South Agora of Miletus (120-130) and the scaenae frons of the theatre in Aspendus (161-180). These are some of the most important monuments of Roman architecture in Asia Minor.
The external walls of the building, to the southern, western and northern side, were plain and made of bricks, based on foundations from architectural parts previously used in other buildings.
The interior of the Library, unlike the two-floor facade, had three floors. Its top view was rectangular (measuring 10.92x16.72 m), while the middle aisle, exactly opposite the central entrance, ended in a large apse that reached up to the ceiling of the interior. Under the central apse was the burial chamber with the sarcophagus of Celsus, accessed from the north and richly adorned with reliefs, which was not looted. A statue representing a man, either Celsus or his son, was found during the excavations near the arched wall and must have stood under the big central apse. The statue is now at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. It seems that the Library of Celsus was not the only monument that served as both a burial chamber and a Library. The burial monument of Trajan in Rome, although bigger in size, must have had both a Greek and a Latin library.

kristine froseth, cis woman + she/her | you know august james pettersen, right? they’re 25, and they’ve lived in irving for, like, eighteen years? well, their spotify wrapped says they listened to all these things i’ve done by the killers like, a million times this year, which makes sense ‘cause they’ve got that whole handwritten notes, messy ponytails, spontaneous midnight excursions thing going on. i just checked and their birthday is january 1, so they’re a capricorn, which is unsurprising, all things considered. ( tessa, 24, pst, she/her )
hey, babes! i’m tessa (24, pst, she/her) and i’ve been rp’ing on this blue website for way too many years. i’m stuck in this wonderful gossamer and wouldn’t have it any other way. anyway, below is august’s bio—she’s a newish muse, so i’m running with the vibe (for lack of a better word) and we’ll see how this goes! always feel free to message me to plot or chat here or on discord (swamp rabbit#1745). okay, let’s do the damn thing!
name: august james pettersen nicknames: aj, aug, a, james, etc. age, birth date: 25; january 1, 1996 hometown: irving, north carolina occupation: model sexuality: pansexual
growing up in irving
august james petterson is the daughter and only child of jameson and erik petterson. she’s the product of surrogacy, the men having sought out and found a lovely woman to help them have a child back in massachusetts where they previously lived. the hoops they went through to have their daughter and both legally be considered her parents were plenty, but with successful careers in architecture and publishing (think founder and editor and chief of something architectural digest-esque) they were able to commit the time and money to make it happen.
not a year after her birth, the three of them relocated to irving, north carolina to be with two of her grandparents whose health was rapidly deteriorating. having packed up their things and taken the short flight, they piled into the elderly couple’s sprawling home on aquila drive. ah, old money. sadly, they’d end up passing a few short years later, just before august started school. the family inherited great wealth and was left the house.
always a fairly quiet kid, august wasn’t the most social student in school. in fact, she spent much of her time with a small group of friends and, after branching out a small bit in high school, in the theatre department. long story short, she wasn’t a very popular person. in fact, with her apparent wealth and quiet demeanor, it wouldn’t surprise me if she was considered aloof, stuck up, or strange by her peers (but i’ll leave that UTY if they attended school together!). in earnest, she was just an observer and never enjoyed talking just to make noise. she liked having an intimate group and just doing what she enjoyed.
at the same time, the lack of a bursting social life and hijinks à la grease and clueless fed her early onset senioritis. she dreamed of and planned for getting out of irving. and when the time for college came, she did!
leaving home
we’d like to congratulate the senior class of 2014! that fall august moved to—drumroll please—new york city for college. what can i say, she’s an east coast babe. she got into NYU and studied english, thinking maybe she’d get into publishing down the line, because she’d always loved reading. truth be told, she wasn’t married to the idea. in fact, she wasn’t married to her education in the slightest. she’d chosen NYU purely based on location and, honestly, who can blame her (’:
her sophomore year of university one of her friends got it in her head to attend a modeling agency open call and, not wanting to go alone, convinced august to go along. while they weren’t interested in the friend, they did take an interest in her. and you know what? it made her feel special and wanted and admired. so she went with it and, with practice, became pretty damn good. her jobs, however, started interfering with her studies. so, without much convincing, she dropped out of school. she was making enough money to rent an apartment with a couple roommates in the village and made modeling her full-time gig. over the next few years her career began to take off a bit, with clients like for love & lemons and victoria’s secret pink (bc we have the real content, so why not use it?). probably a beauty campaign here and there. you know, commercial work etc. etc.
cue “dorothea,” you'rе a queen sellin' dreams, sellin' makeup and magazines
quiet, small town girl is on her way to making it big! whoo! right? well, there came a point where she became a total workhorse. august wanted to please—she wanted to find her place, her people—and, convinced this was it, she did everything in her power to keep moving up. she was a stray cat, she was looking to be taken in by anyone, praised and cared for for anything.
but that isn’t sustainable, and after a while she cracked a bit. ended up letting off steam by partying with so-called friends, picked up a small smoking habit she’s since been trying to kick since. befriended a band at some point (shout out to beau) and groupied the east coast leg of their tour for a couple weeks, because the front man asked and was charming and looked at her like she was exceptional. then the magic faded and she left to go back to her little apartment and next booked job. really, she was just going where she felt people wanted her and everyone kept telling her it was great! everything’s fine!
coming back // present
she realized after that that she’d fallen into this entire thing and, while she was grateful for much of it, she had to wonder if she even liked it. it really hit her one day smack in the middle of a job. that evening she went home, once again packed up her things, and flew home. a special kind of subtle chaos. a not-at-all-adventurous eat, pray, love.
i want to say her agents aren’t the worst people in the world and, while angered by her abrupt departure, realized she needed a break. like, a month-long visit home. it was the holidays and her birthday, after all! lol, oh, no. bets on when they start calling her like, ‘hey, where the hell are you, what’s the deal’?
now, after dropping out of school and putting her career on pause (?), she’s back living with her parents, probably looking at her savings account and wondering if she has enough $$$$ to rent an apartment or room [potential connection idea?] until she decides wtf she’s doing. she’s stuck between feeling like she’s backsliding and feeling like she needs to take the time to figure out what she wants.
personality // fun facts
+ lively, spontaneous, passionate, humorous (or so she likes to think)
- lost, impulsive, insecure in many ways
tiktoks for the vibe: 1, 2, 3
being an adult is a scam
*calls u dude and babe in the same sentence*
she wasn’t bored, she was just restless between adventures
the first person to laugh at herself.
let’s-screw-around-and-talk-about-nothing-for-hours-until-it-inevitably-turns-into-something-deep.
“i always feel like, when i meet people, they have a bigger impact on me than i maybe do on them.”
very honest. the girl isn’t messing around (unless she totally is)!! will ask you out as soon as the thought occurs to her, like, “hey, uh, we should go out sometime. (:”
very, very dreamy, but head not empty, head filled with the same bit of film dialogue on repeat over and over for, like, a week. head still processing the end of a book she finished two weeks ago. head making up prose about the faint freckles on the bridge of your nose and the way your hand’s moving about.
big music person, be it modern, classical, live, vinyl. attaches a lot of emotions and memories to songs. 98% chance you’ll find her at the nearest bar hosting live music, right up front.
her penmanship is beautiful, thanks to a love of the written word. she’d rather stick a post-it note on your door than shoot you a text. loves letters, postcards, etc.
does want to whisk you away on fun, spontaneous adventures, but will go by herself if for whatever reason you’re not available or up for it.

While the players who play a role in the film are referred to as actors (men) or actresses (women). There is also the term extras that are used as supporting characters with few roles in the film. This is different from the main actors who have bigger and more roles. Being an actor and an actress must be demanded to have good acting talent, which is in accordance with the theme of the film he is starring in. ❍❍❍ TV Streaming ❍❍❍
first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from broadcast tower starting in 1930s. Televised events such as 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, 19340 coronation of King George VI in UK, David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at 1939 New York World’s Fair in US spurred a growth in medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after war. 19440 World Streaming inspired many Americans to buy their first television set then in 1948, popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made move became first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle name “Mr Television” demonstrating that medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. first national live television broadcast in US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets.
first national color broadcast ( 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in US occurred on January 1, 1954. During following ten years most network broadcasts, nearly all local programming, continued to be in black — white. A color transition was announced for fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in first completely all-color network season.
❍❍❍ Formats Genres ❍❍❍
See also: List of genres § Streaming television formats genres
Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to wide variety of formats genres that can be presented. They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is case in situation comedy game shows.[citation needed]
A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. program follows their lives adventures. Before 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, main characters premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to characters’ lives during episode, it was usually undone by end. Because of this, episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since 1980s, many Streaming feature progressive change in plot, characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues St. Elsewhere were two of first American prime time drama television Streaming to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while later Streaming Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intended five-season run.[citation needed]

lmaooo oh you know at any given time i’m weaving this rich tapestry of continual frustrations lol.....i’d say i’m in an Upswing Period of [simmering frustration levels closer to the surface] lately too lol like earlier in the week i pushed through a day or two there more casually but then it was like ah jeez here comes the malaise. more specifically today, even just before sitting down to answer this, i emerged from the bathroom to find there was a “dog has pooped inside despite having been outside within the last 10 min” shituation, which was wonderful.....annoyed from Waking by “smh at not being able to adjust my nocturnality, still frustrated about the near success of last friday being thwarted by the dead of night hammering debacle,” & regular Antagonizing Audio issues, aka being stressed by both the [loud, alarming] type sound & the [gross textural misophonia hell] type.....earlier i was like “where is the dish sponge” (still don’t know) & went to get a new, packaged one which had been in a drawer, but that one was gone too, good that there’s no pressing need to wash dishes rn i guess.....still struggling with the “well i guess i’m trying to put myself out there Socially” attempt to find relevant public discords, being generally overwhelmed as actually talking to randos in a group is A Lot & in theory it’s like well you meet someone Specific you’d enjoy talking to & branch off from there but unfortunately you can’t just skip to that step, also i do not genuinely Expect to get to that step either way, also i am not easily finding servers in the 1st place b/c it’s like, well i talk about Interests but what am i interested in? who knows. don’t do art “seriously” enough to rly wanna discuss it much, thought abt Language Learning but one i found wants you to have a verified account lmao like, no thanks. in theory i enjoy Socializing some but in practice it is sure a trial & i have not said anything to anyone anywhere yet, just a “well, not sure what else i could do here situation,” in theory take up an In Person hobby / group to make it all easier but that’s not happening. which, i was also Frustrated remembering oh right i spent a year as measured by my personal age in 1 location, both Pandemic & other [society] problems, & speaking of Interests & Hobbies not having them, i was also >:| over something having kicked in my Math Sensibilities (aka that i like math) & wondering like, would i have enjoyed getting more into math / some particular application, who knows, same but also even more so re: other things i get the sense i’m quite Into, like learning languages & ~performing arts~, which, i at least took math / math related classes into college level courses, which is not true for those other things (took a Language Class: never, took a theatre / drama class: for 1/4 of the schoolyear in 7th grade, & prior to that, just did a scene or two of a play in english class 4th grade, & the approx decade extracurricular of ballet, which is related but of course a different thing. anyhow, annoyed that i Simply Do Not Know & hardly see opportunities to find out on the horizon, although who knows.....which is related to being frustrated about [Society] some more like, thinking about “boy how different would it be if people were guaranteed the right to Essentials For Life like housing, food, medical care, both electricity & the internet Now A Days...” like, agonizing What If there, it is all so unnecessary that It Is Like This......just now someone made an unnecessary Post lmfao thank you xkit.......oh right, i was Frustrated, with an emphasis In Aro / Ace, about Media & Life, what else is new & then, you know, musings on The Theoretical Future & One’s Personal Past that would become even more of a like, audioscape: therapy session topic, these are frustrating things. and all of this answer has been stuff i remember getting Frustrated about in the past 24 hours. Also!!! that last night i was like, i want to play scrabble, so i looked up an online game but the Computer settings are a nightmare like, as far as i could tell the Difficulty settings were mostly attuned to Average Word Length but it was like, yeah you’re playing against this opponent given this effective total familiarity with the most obscure / archaic shit in the scrabble dictionary, not even simply the like, q words / two letter words ppl might happen to know specifically for the purposes of scrabble. there was also no “new game” button?? just had to refresh the page? smh. oh lmfao! also! you Know i was frustrated thinking about Billions, the series / interest that antagonizes you, jokes on you when you hone in on the Quant where it’s like, is he just meant to be the guy who sucks, plus he’s got depression....suppose they do at least handle him w/some sympathy / nonzero Care for this Char acter, but smh at sighing about [bracing yourself for anything promising (cough riawin) to spiral into disaster one way or another, whether it turns into a joke or plot device or just something introduced / built up / demolished for ambient drama/conflict].....what else is new. the periodic cycles of Billions Thoughts lol. was just frustrated at a video’s Editing Cadence basically lmfao. i also find it grating when the word “the jab” is used in tweets re: vaccination, which i just saw, presumably in the same sort of way where i automatically dislike the phrase To Be Fair or referring to food/eating with “fill / filling” or any variants lmfao, or earnest use of the description “hearty”......some words i hate the sound of no matter what, some i hate to hear used in a particular phrase / context......need to simply stop doing things in the middle of answering this b/c it will inevitably involve Frustrations lmfaooo. oh also i was annoyed to wake up to a clear sky. where’s that overcast atmosphere
Moon- Are you currently reading any books? If so, what book(s)?
i am not, but i’ve been considering it! just inconvenient b/c a) i gotta like, choose what book/s to read, & b) i have to read via laptop, which is kind of a pain, & c) like with everything, i always tend to basically read stuff all at once, but i’m also a slow reader lmao, so it’s like, okay, i’m probably basically devoting days on end to Reading Through whatever.....
Pluto- If you could meet anyone, alive or dead, who would you meet?
another classic Fascinating Answer of “i dunno” lol, i’ve never really had a go to answer for this or anything that’s particularly leapt out.....plus re: how i tend to feel nervous with on the spot socializing, the concept of like “if you could have dinner with someone” is too much lmfao like, a waste of time, i’d simply Be Nervous my way completely through it. the only way i could think of things is like, here i go giving someone an interview, i guess, and whomst tf would i feel Prepared to talk to lmfao. relevant to interests it’s like well of course you could ask w. roland things the in depth secret jared questions, or Any questions about quant n billions, but then it’s also like, well, there’s the questions I already have an answer for lol & either you have the same answer or i have a mini monologue, not like i don’t speak in mini monologues all the time if i have something to say at all, and my Questions go like that too lmfao, a disaster already trying to ask people about pertinent Information......never able to think of things re: people who have died, i suppose there’s fun answers re: like, getting lost / unknown Historical Info......when it comes to meeting people i don’t really consider it much in advance b/c i am nervous about everything & aware that any interacting is a Challenge lmfao. whenever these things actually happen, it’s hardly always a disaster, but i’m just improvising in the end. also, i could meet people i actually know but have never met, i.e. you, who i talk to but we are Virtual & Pandemic’d & etc & so on. but i suppose that’s kind of a given lol
Aquila- Do you prefer to read books or watch movies?
i think movies are less Involved for me, like, even if it takes me 3x their runtime (or longer) to watch any videos thanks to getting distracted & stuff, still quicker than i read a book, & unless i’m watching something for the first time and/or really wanting to properly pay attention, i can do other things while putting a movie on, whereas if i’m reading that’s the One Thing i can be doing. but overall i’m like “media, what media” whichever format lol like. haven’t consumed things, don’t often think of specific works i want/plan to consume, don’t often get around to it, etc. classique.....
Protostar- Give a random fact about yourself.
speaking of classic, me struggling to recall 101 info about myself or answer not that out there Questions, but when it’s like “alright hater what are you disgruntled about now” it’s like, Deep Inhale lmfao, but [are you okay? Is Anyone].jpeg on that one as well, we are out here......uh i’m sure i’ve said it before but i’m around 5′11″? maybe 6 ft tall but that might be overdoing it. sort of Average Tall but i am always literally looking down on people lmao.....and bumping my head into a low hanging light fixture around here.....

(I did not mean to make Blue Angels. I was going for a WWII pacific theatre look. I think it’s the yellow stripes, but I’m keeping them. The rest will be weathered grey.)

Everything I love about Assassin’s Creed
1. Ezio da la la la
2. If you idle for long enough in Odyssey Ikaros comes and lands on Alexios’s/Kassandra’s arm and then alexios/Kassandra will greet him.
3. Edward’s outfit is by far my favourite Assassin robe. It looks so fooking cool.
4. Alkibiades
5. The first mission in Assassin’s Creed III. Finding the temple and it coming alive with all the lights and the humming was so fucking cool and the theatre with Haytham was such a good way to start the game, I loved the environment that went with the theatre and the parkour was really good too, everything was good even though I had no idea why we were there in the first place lol.
6. SHAUN HASTINGS
7. Edward’s tattoos being the only reason why I go whaling in AC:Black flag
8. The dynamic between Jacob and Evie, I’ve always wanted a twin duo in a game and Jacob and Evie Frye were awesome and y’all keep sleeping on them.
9. The different colour schemes in Assassin’s Creed 2 for the different cities gave the locations their own feel and vibe and it differentiated them from each other while also ensuring that the landscapes were utterly gorgeous. For example, Venice had cooler colours, very blue and silver while Florence was warmer, with more orange and brown thrown into the mix. It really gave those maps their own identity and it was great.
10. All of Lineage. all of it, it was flipping fantastic and I know it’s not a game but it was brilliant and the other Assassin’s Creed movie will never top it despite Michael Fasbender being in it.
11. That cutscene in Black Flag where Blackbeard lights his beard on fire, I love that historical accuracy because it was very likely true and it’s so SO bad-fucking-ass
12. Alkibiades
13. How quickly I fell in love with Frederico Auditore despite the fella only having about 5 lines.
14. Also just how quickly I came to love the Auditore family, that was how well written they were, that I fell in love after 30 minutes with them.
15. LEONARDO DA VINCI
16. Desmond Miles’s snark.
17. ‘Hey whatta matta with you altair,’
18. SHAUN HASTINGS
19. How buffy Kassandra is
20. The hookblade was actually amazing in Revelations and I’m in full support that it shouldbe brought back. The noise it made was also oddly satisfying too?
21. The Glyphs in AC2 were spooky and ominous and I refused to do the last mission until I had found all of them and uncovered the Truth. Because that entire side quest was full of anticipation and the creepy vibe the Glyphs gave off and how the footage of Adam and Eve was cut up and glitchy was just really interesting and it peaked with a climax.
22. LEONARDO DA VINCI
23. The golden beads in Alexios’s hair.
24. And Alexios just being an overall gorgeous human being who’s face was chiselled by the gods.
25. The flying machine mission in AC2 while really aggravating if you didn’t do it the first time was also really fun and getting to see Leonardo all giddy and happy made it worth it.
26. I don’t know if it’s just me? but Connor’s hair? like I know for a fact that I like men with long hair but something about his hair and the feather intertwined into it was just really appealing? and while I know why Connor shaved his hair I couldn’t help but screech when he did lmao but that’s because it’s obviously not my tradition and it’s abnormal to me. pfft
27. Revelations is one of the best AC games and I’ll fight anyone on this. It was phenomenal given how it finally concluded Ezio’s story (and remember Ezio was the face of the franchise for years and he was fan favourite and still is so there were some pressure and expectations) and how it also concluded Altair’s story.
28. Altair wasn’t that interesting in the original game but Revelations added depth and layers to his characters and made him way more intriguing. The game also gave this character important significance to the lore and I think that’s the perfect way to honour the guy who started it all. As much as we love Ezio, Altair came before and without him, Assassin’s Creed wouldn’t quite be the way it was today. (although it’s up to you if that’s a bad thing or not lmao)
29. And seeing Ezio old and matured, becoming this wise legend of a man was really cool and getting to play as him in his final journey was both heartbreaking but satisfactory.
30. I have to give a massive applause to Ubisoft for making Leonardo gay as well in Brotherhood prominently. I don’t think it was ever proven historically if he was? but it was rumoured? and yet Ubisoft went and made it canon giving that representation while also having Ezio outright say he’s okay with Leonardo dating men?! Like, in that time period if you were gay you could go to prison and the general view of homosexuality was that of disgust and yet Ezio is just here supporting his best friend? hell yes.
31. ALKIBIADES
32. I have certain feelings with Unity, but I won’t lie that the parkour was spot on in that game.
33. Gideon Emery....just Gideon Emery as Reginald Birch. The character’s a massive prick but god...that voice.
34. Connor mentioning his grandfather Edward as he’s sailing the Aquila.
35. Getting to see the wreck of the Jackdaw in Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry was gut-wrenching.
36. Finally getting to pet animals in ACIII.
37. Finally getting to feed pigs in a video game ^^
38. SHAUN HASTINGS
39. OKay, I like Shaun because the guy is really entertaining and he’s British like me and I need to see this fucker in future games again...because after Syndicate he just vanishes and we got...Fucking Layla ugh.
40. The Naval combat in Black Flag is unmatched, fighting other ships never felt like a chore and it was fun and thrilling and the rewards felt deserving. And the feeling of taking down your first Man’o War is RIVETING.
41. Rebecca calling the Animus ‘Baby’
42. She’s another character I want to see come back. And she and Shaun better come back and be alive.
43. Lucy being a Templar was a plot twist I never saw coming but I was all for that angst especially when it seemed like they were setting up what I thought was the inevitable Desmond x Lucy romance. But I guessed wrong.
44. Yusuf Tazim being the joy and light of Revelations. fuck you Ubisoft
45. Ezio’s family theme song is the most iconic video game songs ever.
46. The introduction of Alkibiades in Odyssey, what a great way to introduce a character. like seriously, I fell in love with that fucker the moment he started speaking and felt up Kassandra’s arms while being half naked and wasted.
47. Bayek being a breath of fresh air in wonderfully written complex characters whose story was powerful and tragic. He needs a sequel.
48. Assassins Creed Brotherhood’s trailer being iconic.
49. When returning to Florence to retrieve the apple and you bring Ezio back to his old home only to see the ghosts of his entire family waiting for him. I was gobsmacked when that happened and it’s such a beautiful detail.
50. Mary Read/James Kidd being one of the best characters in Black Flag and leader in the ‘did not deserve it’ club. Every minute of her was flipping terrific and her significance in Edward’s story as one of the driving points that turned him into a better man was great.
51. I cried at the end of Black Flag.
52. The little text about Shaun sobbing when you look at the database on Desmond the dog in Syndicate.
53. The lip scar being shared between Desmond, Ezio and Altair was a cool detail.
54. The interchangeable cloaks in ACII.
55. Henry Green was so soft, kind and lovely and I honestly adore him.
56. Cane swords in Syndicate WERE AWESOME
57. NO fall damage in Odyssey. Keep this feature I don’t care how impossible it is for me to survive a jump off of a giant statue of a naked god it’s cool and I want it for every other game about to be released.
58. If you walk through grass in Origins Bayek sticks his hand out like that scene in Gladiator.
59. The scene in ACII Where Ezio uncovers his father’s robes from the chest and holds it up, It’s an incredible scene and the music fits so well with it and if you’ve watched Lineage it’s all the more amazing.
60. Rosa being pretty and terrifying in ACII.
61. The Bleeding effect being that other thing in lore that is SO BLOODY INTRIGUING and I wish it was explored a bit more. Can you actually imagine having the bleeding effect? where you can’t tell the past and the present apart? where you see ghosts from the past and hear voices no one else hears? jesus,..
62. getting answers about Clay/Subject 16. Ever since he left that writing in the wall with his own blood I was hooked on his story and thank god we got answers and a face to the legendary name. I wouldn’t mind more of him though.
63. I’ve always been fascinated with Native Americans and finally getting to explore them a bit more in ACIII proved to be interesting and I hope it was satisfactory representation for Native Americans.
64. finally getting to play in the present day in assassin’s creed brotherhood and 3, like actually getting to run around and explore as Desmond.
(I did a post like this on my old blog and I’ve rewrote them on here but I also got some new things, I just like having a post like this on my blog and I like seeing people who also agree with these brilliant features in this franchise, you can pretty much tell which two games are my favourite lol, Black Flag and 2 will always have a special place in my heart,)

Hamlet by Aquila Theatre at Stockton College in Galloway, NJ
Something's rotten in the state of Jersey with Aquila Theatre’s touring production of Hamlet by William Shakespeare which stopped at Stockton College for a performance. This production directed by Desiree Sanchez brings something more than Shakespeare but the question of existence itself. Hamlet is the center of a 400 year old story of woe and intrigue. Someone has murdered Hamlet’s father. Gertrude, his mother, has married Claudius, his uncle. What's worse Horatio has seen his father’s ghost has come back from the dead with a message: “I have been murdered and you must avenge my death” Add in the schemings of Polonius who thinks Hamlet is just a lovesick puppy over his daughter Ophelia, the meddling of his parents who use Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to keep tabs on him, and the well wishes of his friend Horatio and you can tell that Hamlet is soon to be torn at the seams by everyone’s expectations of him. How is he going to fulfill every obligation? Does he even want to go on at all? Desiree Sanchez as director worked together with the cast and crew to bring something visceral to the play. When someone watches Hamlet it is easy to watch with your upper brain, the one that wants to dissect it as literature. But through skillful work with actors and long work with designers to shape sound and light she presented a piece that brought us back to the caveman’s campfire. We’re watching Shakespeare in modern dress but we're also talking about the oldest questions of life, family, legacy, and what would we do to preserve each if death were crouching just outside the light in the darkness. I think that she did a wonderful job bringing actors to that dark edge while still making it something that they can do over and over while on national tour. She also seems to curate the whole picture using physical bodies, light, set, and costumes to make the whole experience. Some directors you can tell whether they favor working with actors more or whether they are just putting bodies on stage under pretty lights. Sanchez rides that line down the middle and uses all the resources at hand. That's a perfect skill to have while designing a national tour.
Our cast of eight may as well have been a cast of thousands with the kind of energy they brought to the production. Lewis Brown (Hamlet) gives us a character of struggle. He brings the full body and voice into what he does. I once always thought that Hamlet’s soliloquies were purely verbal and mental but you could tell he was leaning his whole body into it. He turned the iambic pentameter into a physical effort and showed us not only struggle with people but the struggle between the forces in his head. Lauren Drennan’s (Ophelia) did something that I never knew could happen. She made me feel sorry for Ophelia. There is always a sense of naive innocence when you talk about Ophelia and in her voice and her tone she started there but then as things got real and her life started falling apart she turned that innocence into a train wreck. She melded her voice and her body and her energy to become something that made me shiver. During her talk about the flowers I wanted to look away but found I couldn't. I wanted to run onstage, scoop her up, and take her away. Drennan brought her whole acting training to bear to make a character that made me feel guilty for sitting still. Now that was talent! Tyler La Marr (Horatio) served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps and did two tours in Iraq. What better person to play a man do torn between duty to his country and duty to his prince. Immediately I found a man who was honorbound and struggling with those convictions usually willing to die for them but in his case brave enough to live for them. Kudos! My hat goes off to Guy de Villiers (Claudius) and Rebecca Reaney (Gertrude) who made me feel dirty as the king and queen. But it's also hard to play a king and queen that people hate but they still are captured by and have to take notice of onstage. There were times where I didn't believe their chemistry but I didn't know if that was because their characters literally had none in the story or if their performance was slightly off. I do feel however that it's something that is not as vague in most of their performances of this play. James Lavender played a host of characters from Polonius to the Ghost to the Grave Digger (as well as Osric). I want to focus on the work that he did as Polonius and the Ghost though. Playing both those fathers he brought forth the theme of legacy in the face of mortality. He brought a warmth to Polonius that I haven't seen and a tragic anguish to the Ghost that I've never seen. It really is a touching performance from such a versatile actor.
My hat is also off to Harriet Barrow and Michael Rivers who had to both play the parts of the players and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. I felt that they did the best that could playing two characters that seemed to have conflicting emotions. And motivations. In fact I don't know if the director made the right choice putting the characters together at all. But I so admire the actors for pulling off the feat this mashup presented. Barrow pulls off a wonderful performance as Marcellus and the priest. I feel that I loved Rivers’ Bernardo far more than I did his Laertes and I'm not sure that's supposed to happen. Rivers was obviously at home in Shakespeare and while one of his characters left something to be desired I truly admired his professional caliber performance.
I also want to give a lot of credit to lighting design by Joel Moritz, sound design by Andy Evan Cohen, projections by Lianne Arnold, and Lara de Bruijn’s work on costumes. Together they took a minimal touring production and made every little element have meaning. Even a shift in costume, a square of light, and a piercing shriek of sound could be a major change in psychology or plot. It's such a breathtaking piece of art that these guys have collaborated on and you must go see it!
When you're directing or producing Shakespeare you’re always wearing two hats. The first hat is the director who must become an advocate and lover of this story and bring together a team of artists on one solid mission to bring it to the stage. The second hat is one of an adaptor who must turn a five act Elizabethan script intended for an ancient stage into a two act piece of modern theatre. Unless you're directing museum theatre you're no longer performing Shakespeare in the way it was originally intended. Director Desiree Sanchez also wore these two hats and I don't envy her that job even while I celebrate her work. To adapt Shakespeare in one sense is to make no one happy. There is half the audience that is having flashbacks from years of English teachers shoving the bard down their throats and half the audience are Shakespeare devotees who have seen or read it several times and will swoon the minute they hear a soliloquy or get outraged the minute they see something they love get cut. But like I said earlier to produce Shakespeare today is to change it. So essentially half the audience won't care and half the audience wants to take you out back after the show and punish you for your “crimes”.
This is what made Sanchez’s adaptation so surprising. I first noticed something was awry when the first act was over and I saw some clamor amongst some audience members around us. The person next to me and my wife asked us “Did you notice that they cut “To Be or Not To Be”? My first reaction was to shrug and go “wait did they?” My wife, who is often far faster on the uptake than me snapped her fingers and went “that's what was missing!” The circle of humanity around us seemed a buzz. As if they were saying, “How dare they cut that one piece?” But I was desperately searching my brain trying to figure out where it was supposed to be. You have to understand that I'm a mixture of these two types of people in the audience. I was force fed Shakespeare in high school and then became a lover or him in college and grad school. I went from saying we should never produce Shakespeare again to saying we should desperately revive him and the old canon. The through line of this is that I've had to read, memorize, and discuss that speech my whole academic life. How could I have been watching Shakespeare so intently that I forget that soliloquy!
Right as the lights were going down for the second act my wife said, “We saw what they did with ‘Murder on the Nile’ I bet they’ll put it somewhere in the second act.” I was dubious but found myself silently rooting for her as the show went on. Then it came to the scene at the graveyard. We know that Claudius and Laertes have hatched a plot to kill him. We have already seen him hold the skull of a dear beloved Yoric in his hands. We see Hamlet and Laertes fight over the body of Ophelia. Most of us know the ending is coming. We know that most of these characters are not long for this world. We know that Hamlet will soon go to a grave of his own.
And then Hamlet comes on stage again with these images of life and death fresh in our minds. He comes onstage at a time where both of these predescribed factions of the audience know the plot and then begins to utter those immortal words. A silent hush fell over the audience. My wife grabbed my arm and I was shocked. Not by the audacity of changing the script but because how much weight those words had in that moment. In a graveyard of dry bones with murder plots abound where we know death is imminent Hamlet doesn't talk about life or death. He talks about existence and whether he wants to be on this or not. The sheer weight and density of that moment became so palpable that it lay like a heavy blanket over the whole audience. Sanchez didn't just awake our visceral selves in this play but got two steps ahead of our brains and played our emotions like an instrument. She made Shakespeare new to people who had seen it a million times. Maybe there were some people left in the torch and pitchfork contingent but the standing ovation at the end of the play tells me there weren't many. I got home home and looked up Hamlet and there it was in Act Three. “To be or not to be that is the question”.originally the lamenting of a young man (what my wife calls an “emo teen”) Sanchez made it into the heavy thoughts of a suffering adult. Hamlet seemed to grow up in this version. I also found a myriad of characters that I had totally forgotten were in the play. Aquila Theatre managed to make an old play, not one of my favorites even, and make it hit me where I live. Not only that it hacked my memory and made me watch the play with my emotions not my theatre degree. And for that rare and special gift I give them thanks.
