Estimated to infect around 30% of people worldwide, Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread parasite with a peculiar life cycle: it reproduces sexually only in its main hosts, wild and domestic cats, but can also infect and replicate inside other species, including humans. The ensuing disease, toxoplasmosis, can cause flu-like symptoms before settling in as a generally symptomless chronic condition, although it becomes more dangerous during pregnancy and for patients with weakened immunity. Toxoplasma’s superpower is its ability to hijack the immune system, infecting macrophages, which normally gobble up pathogens, then altering their behaviour. Infection with Toxoplasma (pictured, in red), changes gene expression inside macrophages (in green, with nuclei in blue), reprogramming them to become more mobile, so they themselves help to spread the parasites. Recent research revealed that Toxoplasma uses a protein called GRA28 to re-organise DNA in the macrophages’ nuclei, suggesting a new target for scientists investigating potential treatments.

"Die Schlossfestspiele sind seit vielen Jahren ein wichtiger Bestandteil des kulturellen Angebots, weit über die Gemeinde- und Landkreisgrenzen hinaus", freut sich Fraktionsvorsitzende Simone Heitz. "Wir sind glücklich, dass es Staatssekretär Arne Braun (Grüne) gelungen ist, die Förderung im laufenden Jahr zu erhöhen!" Pro Wrestling Illustrated: Rookies of the Year

It’s Friday night and for some reason I got curious about the winners of PWI’s rookie of the year award, and whether the venerable wrestling magazine had a track record of being able to spot young talent that would go on to make a lasting contribution to the business. The answer: Kind of! 

1972: Mike Graham: solid midcarder, son of a famous wrestler/promoter, eventually a WWE agent

1973: Bob Orton Jr. / Tony Garea (tie): Orton was a solid midcarder and the son of a famous wrestler (and eventually the father of a yet-more famous wrestler); Garea was a solid midcarder who eventually became a WWE agent. Are we detecting a pattern?

1974: Larry Zbysko: Solid upper midcard guy who would have a very hot feud with mentor Bruno Sammartino. 

1975: Ric Flair: This was a solid choice

1976: Bob Backlund: Another good choice! 

1977: Ricky Steamboat: They were really hitting their stride at this point.

1978: Tommy Rich: He would burn brightly but briefly. This was not a bad choice for a Rookie of the Year.

1979: Sweet Brown Sugar: He’d go onto fame in the WWF as Koko B. Ware, where he was a ridiculous joke wrestler. In the territories, though, he was a bruiser who seemed like he could have been a near-the-top guy

1980: Terry Taylor: We return to the template of the solid midcarder who eventually became a WWE agent

1981: David Sammartino: lol 

1982: Brad Armstrong: A great “should have been” midcarder who had a lot of talent but was saddled with a series of terrible gimmicks. Another demonstration of PWI’s love for young wrestlers from established grappling families. 

1983: Angelo Mosca Jr.: This is even more egregious than David Sammartino. Who the hell remembers Angelo Mosca’s son? The runners-up were King Kong Bundy and Arn Anderson. Injustice. 

1984: Mike Von Erich: OH COME ON 

1985: Nord the Barbarian: This is like the inverse of their late ‘70s run of picking hugely consequential stars

1986: Lex Luger: The obvious choice that year, although Sting was a runner-up (and so was Tom Magee, shades of Wrestling Obsessive Twitter from 2019)

1987: Owen Hart: Yes

1988: Madusa Miceli: Bold choice! Not a bad one. She never got the opportunities in the US that she should have, but that’s hardly her fault. 

1989: The Destruction Crew (Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom): Haha, hoo boy. From the AWA’s circling-the-drain phase, this was Verne’s attempt to replace the departed Road Warriors. It was a huge success, and that’s why the AWA is still on top today! 

1990: Steve Austin: This is a pretty impressive pick, honestly. He hadn’t really done anything by this point (he wouldn’t even join WCW until 1991), but something about him must have stood out. It probably helped that the runners-up were El Gigante, Brad Anderson, and Chris Chavis. Not a deep year! 

1991: Johnny B. Badd: A less impressive pick.

1992: Erik Watts: Yeah, fuck off

1993: Vampire Warrior: YES! YES! GANGREL ABSOLUTELY WHIPS ASS! IT WAS TRUE EVEN THEN! 

1994: 911: I can’t believe this. I’m literally laughing out loud. 911! 

1995: Alex Wright: Not a bad choice in ‘95. He had a lot of promise but eventually got trapped in a downward spiral of bad WCW gimmickry

1996: The Giant: Solid choice. He went on to have a reasonably distinguished career. Rocky Maivia was a runner-up that year, which seems crazy in retrospect, but at the time it was the right call. It seems beyond ridiculous that the Trailblazers drafted Sam Bowie ahead of Michael Jordan (and Charles Barkley and John Stockton), but nobody knew Bowie had bad knees at the time or that MJ would be a player who redefined the game. 

1997: Prince Iaukea: Brakkus was a runner-up. Not a strong rookie class.

1998: Goldberg: No choice more obvious

1999: Shane McMahon: [pukes into a trashcan] 

2000: Kurt Angle: A choice as obvious as 1998′s selection of Goldberg

2001: Randy Orton: A rookie class that also included Lesnar and Cena. Stacked! Like the aforementioned 1984 NBA draft. Cena is the obvious choice in hindsight, but Orton’s no slouch. He’s the Hakeem Olajuwon figure here.

2002: Maven: Every runner up was also a Tough Enough cast member. Give me a break.

2003: Zach Gowen: Eh, OK

2004: Monty Brown: I can see what they were thinking, but: no.

2005: Bobby Lashley: Sure, fine, whatever

2006: The Boogeyman: Cody Rhodes was a runner up. This is not an “even in hindsight” thing, he was obviously better than gimmick-only Boogeyman in 2006

2007: Hornswoggle: I like Indie Swoggle a lot, but I’m dubious that there was no rookie wrestler better in 2007. This is the problem with being so WWE-centric.

2008: Curtis Axel: PWI sure loves wrestling families

2009: Mike Sydal: Not to be confused with his brother Matt

2010: David Otunga: First runner-up: Tamina. What a year.

2011: Ace Hawkins: In a Sam Bowie/MJ moment, Roman Reigns was the second runner-up

Hej, jetzt ist mein Besuch auf der Ambiente in Frankfurt schon wieder eine Woche her, wo ich mich in Sachen “Skandinavisch Wohnen” umgeschaut habe. Natürlich stellt sich dann immer schnell die Frage, was ist angesagt und was liegt im Trend? Ich finde diese Frage sehr schwierig, denn wir sollten uns doch nicht nach einem Trend richten, oder? Wir sollten uns unser Zuhause eher so skandinavisch einrichten, dass es uns gefällt. Und skandinavisch wohnen ist ja eh Imme angesagt. 🙂 Natürlich gibt der Trend uns bestimmte Farben vor oder inspiriert uns. Aber am Ende soll es uns doch selbst gefallen. Mit dieser Einstellung bin ich auch über die Messe gegangen. Ich fand viele Blautöne, viele natürliche Farben und viele Produkte wirkten trotz ihrer rauen Oberfläche sehr natürlich. Und ich habe wieder viele schöne Dinge entdeckt, die ich Euch in diesem Blogpost vorstellen möchte. Besonders angetan bin ich von den Geschirr-Neuheiten in Porzellan und Keramik aus Dänemark und Norwegen. Euer Stefan 

Skandinavisch Wohnen: Das richtige Geschirr

Na dann sollten wir doch auch gleich mal mit dem Geschirr anfangen. Geschirr begleitet uns oft drei Mal am Tag: zum Frühstück, zum Mittag und zum Abendessen. Und auch zu Tassen und Bechern pflegen wir oft eine besondere Beziehung, wenn wir unseren Lieblingskaffee oder Tee daraus genießen. Ich freue mich immer, wenn ich den Tisch decken kann und es am Ende einfach hübsch aussieht. Dann schmeckt das Essen auch gleich viel besser, oder? Wenn Du Dich zu Hause etwas skandinavisch fühlen möchtest, kannst Du das ganz ganz schnell und unkompliziert mit Deinem Geschirr schaffen. Dafür brauchst Du keine neuen Möbel oder musst die Wand streichen. Eine einfache, schlichte Tischdecke reicht oder Du nutzt deinen Tisch einfach so. Die Deko darf sehr reduziert sein. Vielleicht ein hast Du ein paar Wildblumen oder eine Kerze? Perfekt, um skandinavisch zu wohnen.

Völlig neu für mich war das Steinzeug-Service von Knabstrup Keramik aus Dänemark. Das Service gibt es in vier Farben. Olivgrün ist das Original von Johannes Hansen, was 1966 bis 1972 angefertigt wurde, und neu sind die Farben Weiß, Schwarz und Blau. Die Glasur ist seidenmatt. Der Keramiker hatte damals den Fokus auf die Formsache gesetzt. Das Service ist schlicht und die Kanten sind geriffelt. Ich mag sehr das blaue Service, da Blau eh meine Lieblingsfarbe ist. Knabstrup Keramik gibt es seit 1897 und erfindet sich ständig wieder neu. Neben dem Service gibt es auch Vasen, Reliefs, die Vasen Plateau und Leaf, Teig-Schüsseln und Töpfe. Und das Beste kommt zum Schluss, nämlich die Preise. Die Teller und Becher gibt es jeweils ab 14 Euro.

Ebenso aus Dänemark stammt Aida. Aida ist vielleicht vielen von Euch als Kreuzfahrt-Unternehmen bekannt, aber es gibt tatsächlich ein Label aus Dänemark, was seit 1953 eine große Auswahl an Geschirr, Glas, Textilien und Besteck. Besonders angetan bin ich von der RAW-Kollegion. Alles ist so roh, natürlich, nicht edel und wird per Hand gefertigt. Dadurch ist jedes Stück individuell und hat seinen eigenen Charme. Ich bin schon oft mit AIDA-Tellern in Berührung gekommen. Zum ersten Mal in Aarhus 2017 und dann letzten Herbst in Kopenhagen. Ich finde ja, dass das Essen besser zur Geltung kommt, wenn das Geschirr schlicht ist. So ist das bei der RAW-Kollektion von Christiane Schaumburg-Müller, die aus Handtüchern, Schüsseln, Brettern, Gläsern, Tellern und Tischsets besteht. Typisch nordisch und perfekt fürs skandinavisch Wohnen.

Wer Norwegen kennt, weiß, dass Norwegen eine unendlich lange und schöne Küste hat. Sie beginnt am Oslofjord, geht über Südnorwegen mit weißen Sommerhäusern hoch in den Norden, vorbei an schroffen Felsen, Fjorden und endet fast an der russischen Grenze, wo es im Winter immer dunkel und kalt ist. Das neue Geschirr Osean (Ozean) stammt von Wik & Walsøe und das Design von Linda Svedal Walsøe wurde eben vom Meer beeinflusst. Der Rand der weißen Teller ist Hellbau, wie das sommerliche Meer Norwegens im Sommer und in der Mitte werden die Teller Dunkelblau, wie das Wasser in Nordnorwegen im Winter. Während Wik & Walsøe sonst eher auf Wald und Fabelwesen setze, ist die neue Kollektion eine tolle Ergänzung. Darüber hinaus gibt es aber auch neue Weihnachtskugeln aus der bekannten Julemorgen-Serie, die neue Farbe Gelb in der Falla-Serie und neue Gläser mit Hirschen drauf.

Skandinavisch Wohnen – Für jeden Tag

Es gibt Alltagsgegenstände, die uns jeden Tag begleiten: Smartphone-Hüllen, Schmuck, Becher, Ladekabel, Laptop-Hüllen und Stifte. Das ist nur eine kurze Aufzählung aus der Design Letters Kollektion, die extrem wächst und somit immer umfangreicher wird. Wie cool ist es, wenn die eigenen Alltagsgegenstände nicht langweilig sind, sondern auch noch nordisch aussehen. Die  Zahlen und Buchstaben des dänischen Designers Arne Jacobsen werten jeden Gegenstand auf und verleihen ihm einen individuellen Touch.  Auf der Ambiente-Messe gab es so viele Neuheiten, dass ich wirklich nun mein Bestes gebe, Euch alles aufzulisten: Es gibt neue Smartphone-Hüllen aus Leder in braun und schwarz und kleine Sticker zum selber gestalten, dann gibt es ein längeres Ladekabel fürs iPhone und neue Stromstecker mit HEY und HELLO. Es gibt viel Neues in Sachen Schmuck und neue Thermobecher mit HOT, LOVE und TO GO. Das ist eine tolle Idee, denn ich habe noch neulich gedacht, wie cool es wäre, wenn es Thermobecher von Design Letters gäbe. Die Thermosflaschen gibt es in neuen Farben. Für unsere Laptops gibt es neue Hüllen in Nude und Schwarz. Wer seine Flasche kühl stellen will, kann den COOL-Kühler in Nude nutzen.  Dann gibt es noch neue Handtücher, neue Boxen, neue Schilder für die Wand und für Kinder gibt es nun Plastikgläser mit Buchstaben drauf und Trinkflaschen inklusive Strohhalm. Und das Beste zum Schluss: es gibt neue Becher mit HEY, HOT und PAUSE. Mit diesen alltäglichen Accessoires macht skandinavisch Wohnen Spaß, oder?

Auch aus Finnland gibt es neue Becher, die uns den Alltag verschönern sollen. Aus der Nordic-Serie von Muurla gibt es einen Becher mit einem Lachs drauf und natürlich dürfen die Mumins nicht fehlen. Für den grünen Daumen gibt es kleine Glasschalen für Pflanzen zum Aufhängen und ein Brett, was man auch als Tablett nutzen kann.

Skandinavisch Wohnen – Deko für Deine Wohnung

Natürlich kann man sich das skandinavische Lebensgefühl auch über Deko in die eigenen vier Wände holen. Dabei sollte man nur achten, dass die Deko nicht zu bunt ist, das Material natürlich ist und die Formen reduziert sind. Ein paar Beispiele habe ich Euch von der Ambiente mitgebracht:

In diese kleinen Spatzen habe ich sofort verliebt. Sehen die nicht putzig aus? Die kommen von Novoform.

Völlig neu sind die kleinen Figuren aus Beton von Korridor-Design. Ich kann mich nicht entscheiden welche Figur schöner ist. Der Elch oder der Dackel? Es gibt sie in verschiedenen Farben. Und alle fühlen sich auch “roh” an und machen sie durch so nordisch.

Von Kay Bojesen gibt es ganz neu ein Auto aus Holz und den Vogel Georg in Silber/Grün.

Dann habe ich mich gefreut, als ich auf dem Stand von By Lassen war. Das Label By Lassen stammt aus Dänemark und ich dachte bisher, dass es nur Kerzenleuchter von denen gibt. Okay, da hatte ich mich geirrt. Zur Kollektion gehören neben Haltern für Blumen und u.a. Stühle und Sessel. Cool, es ist immer wieder schön, wenn man dazulernt und neue Dinge entdeckt.

Was zaubert jetzt zum Frühling immer gute Stimmung? Na klar, frische Blumen in einer hübschen Skandi-Vase von Lyngby, die in der Herstellung sehr aufwändig ist, wenn man es oben glatt und unten geriffelt haben will, wie in dem neuen Modell.

Skandinavisch Wohnen – Natürlich schön

Seit Anfang des Jahres mache ich mir natürlich auch Gedanken, ob unser Konsum-Verhalten so weitergehen kann oder nicht. Die Antwort ist natürlich: nein, nicht! Wir haben viel zu viel zu Hause, es ist nicht Lagom und Plastik ist eh doof. Doch wie kann man anfangen sein Leben zu verbessern? Viele denken, dass man alleine nichts bewegen kann. Aber das stimmt nicht. Man wird sicherlich nicht von heute auf morgen Alles ändern können. Aber man kann Schritt für Schritt anfangen. Schon eine Plastiktüte weniger im Supermarkt, ist eine Tüte weniger. Und auch ein Hamburger beim Fastfood-Laden ist ein Burger weniger in Plastik. Es geht also. Warum sage ich das? Es gibt auch viele Gegenstände in meiner Küche und meinem Bad, die ich gern mal aus Plastik kaufe: Angefangen bei unserer Zahnbürste. Doch dabei gibt es viele Alternativen. Iris Handwerk aus Schweden bietet viele Utensilien als Holz und natürlichem Material an.

In dieses Konzept passt auch zu Lapuan Kankurit, die sehr hochwertige Produkte aus Finnland herstellen. Dazu gehören Kissenhüllen, Handtücher für die Sauna, Geschirrhandtücher und Decken.

The Ulm School (Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm, if you want to be really accurate about it) operated from 1955 to 1968. In that time, the Product Design department worked with Braun to design appliances, audio and film equipment, and personal care devices (shavers, hair dryers). The designs introduced a confidence with the use of mixed materials, combination of rational geometric form with organic form, mastery of sculptural and functional form language, and exploration of how products incorporating new technology can seem familiar and easy to use. Dieter Rams, Gerd Alfred Müller, and Fritz Eichler formed the core of a design department at Braun which created a standardized approach to process and aesthetic which defined Braun's output for decades. At the same time, new plastics and new manufacturing methods for plastics allowed designers to explore form in new ways. Designs appeared in the 1960's that were restricted not by the grain or malleability of material, but by the imagination. Designers challenged the limitations of plastic and molds by designing ever larger and more complicated objects. Plastic products began to flow into people's lives and import with them bright colors, shiny surfaces, and a sense of fun. Expanded plastic foam allowed new forms and products. Plastic was also introduced into humbler objects like food packaging, soda bottles, and plastic bags. The cheapness and novelty of plastic made it prevalent in every aspect of life around the world in the early 1970’s. creating entirely new behaviors and patterns of consumption. Along with all of the discarded bottles and broken toys came an understanding that the Earth, though rich in resources, was and is a delicately balanced system in danger of being overcome by the sloppy way we are living on it. 德國經濟部長本來想密會任正非 卻為何最終向媒體公開？

基民盟黨員阿爾特邁爾和任正非在一家美輪美奐的豪華酒店內共進了午餐。他曾經長期把特朗普作為德國國家安全最大的威脅者。而那天，坐在阿爾特邁爾對面的那個人，是他心中最大威脅者的“威脅者”——華為正在智能手機市場上蠶食蘋果的地盤。

阿爾特邁爾決定打破保密協議，把會談事實公之於眾，他自己其實對華為身處輿論漩渦的狀態心知肚明。他說，像華為這樣的一家大公司，在德國有巨大的商業利益，和這家公司總裁的會面，公眾有一定的知情權。

毫無疑問，聰明的阿爾特邁爾把皮球踢給了華盛頓：看好了，我和華為老總見了面，我們不會屈從美國方面的壓力。從今年年初開始，美國就一直威脅德國跟隨其他西方國家腳步——禁止或限制華為參與其國內網絡系統建設，為此還向德國電信巨頭開出誘惑條件。

阿爾特邁爾是以德國聯邦內閣重要成員的身份和華為接洽的。在中美貿易戰的背景下，華為這家通信巨頭處在了風口浪尖上，目前看來德國頂住了壓力，沒有和美國站在一起將其封殺，而且德國電信董事會說，5G網絡將首先在柏林和波恩提供服務，並且對私人用戶提供相應的收費標準。 6月中旬，在德國參與5G頻譜拍賣的4家企業以共超過65.5億歐元的出價獲得5G經營權，德國電信一家就拿出了20多億歐元。

德國總理默克爾的基民盟黨內同儕克里斯托弗·波恩史提爾（Bern­stiel），在阿爾特邁爾訪華之前去了一趟日本。他走訪了日本通信界的巨無霸日本電信電話公司（NTT），認為“如果日本可以不依靠華為就能建成自己的5G系統，那麼我們也可以做到。”表達同樣疑慮的還有不少其他的黨內高層。

就在德國聯邦議會夏季休會期前幾天，德國基民盟和其姐妹黨基社盟的一些議員舉行了一個秘密碰頭會，就德國網絡安全和數字時代的主權問題展開了討論。會議各方代表一致認為，以後如果再有類似會議，將會把相關部門的部長排除在外。

保守派陣營中很多人擔憂中國會通過網絡基礎設施建設對德國實施監控，甚至通過5G系統的鋪墊做某種遠距離的破壞。波恩史提爾說：“根據我目前所掌握到的情況，我會把華為排除在德國未來的網絡建設之外，即使這樣會付出巨大的時間和金錢成本，但德國必須要堅守自己的數字網絡主權。”

基民盟內部的情報主管森斯伯格（Sinsberg）毫不諱言：“美國和中國的供應商我都不信任，這兩家的網絡建設都和他們的情報部門共享信息，合作密切。所以說，所有參與德國5G建設的運營商都必須接受最嚴格的審查。”他認為，政府應該主動牽頭對這些企業做最細微的監管，督促他們遵守德國安全方面的法律，“我還是更傾向於德國本土的公司來負責鋪設基站。”

波恩史提爾還進一步強調德國必須要把對本國網絡建設對國外的依賴上升到政治高度：“為什麼不能建設一個歐洲網絡建設共同體呢？應該越快越好，就像當年歐洲各國合作搞空中客車一樣。”

在國會外交委員會任職的諾伯特·羅特根響應了波恩史提爾的倡議，他認為：“技術層面上的歐洲網絡建設如果立足於歐洲本土那是再好不過的，我能遇見到這會讓資金成本大幅上升，但相比國外的運營商介入，這會大大降低歐洲受到網絡攻擊的風險。”

德國聯邦政府目前的決定也是基於現實實用主義層面的考量，而非意識形態因素。目前德國有三大設備供應商：瑞典的愛立信、芬蘭的諾基亞和韓國的三星，這三家都長期和華為合作，使用華為技術，因為華為在5G技術中處於領先地位。

另一個在德國政府對華為立場決策過程中扮演關鍵角色的，是在聯邦資訊辦公室任職的阿爾內·紹恩波姆（Arne Schönbohm），他是信息安全組組長，坊間綽號“萊茵河的守夜人”。在他看來，目前使用華為的風險仍在“可控”範圍，並且強調所有的電信從業者都必須接受嚴苛的准入條款限制，如有出現了危險狀況，就要馬上踢出准入隊列。

是否要禁華為這樣一個關鍵性議題的辯論並非只存在於象牙塔中，關鍵問題在於德國在數字革命領域有多少自主性。因為德國對國外供應商的依賴並不僅僅是手機端，還包括雲儲存硬盤等一系列技術環節。德國IT協會Bitkom便多次向政府抱怨，在大數據儲存這些硬件方面，德國的信息細節掌握在諸如亞馬遜、谷歌或微軟等互聯網大企業的手裡。

德國總理府秘書長佈勞恩（HeLGe Braun）對這些潛在的隱憂心知肚明。不過他不認為還有可替代的選項：“5G技術不僅涉及到數據加密，而且還關聯著各行各業的信息共享”。唯一能讓他保持樂觀情緒的是從法律層面：“完全可以通過修訂政府信息安全法，加強對公眾互聯網安全的教育，保護公眾在虛擬世界中的隱私和資金轉移的安全。 ”

還有一種顧慮，就是不少德國官員擔心華為會把海外用戶蒐集起來呈交給中國安全部門。布勞恩否認了這種可能性，而且他從經濟層面論證德國的5G建設目前還離不開華為。

2008年至2018年，華為在德國的營業額平均每年增長26%，2018年營業額達到近27億歐元。截止到2018年底，華為已經為德國創造了3萬多的就業機會，與德國各個機構的合作非常緊密。

德國聯邦網絡安全白皮書的內容明白無誤地顯示，未來德國的互聯網建設如果和華為相切割，留給德國的只有苦楚。因為一旦雙方鬧的不愉快，齟齬將不僅限於網絡安全領域。比如澳大利亞曾公開表示把華為踢出該國的5G規劃，結果澳大利亞向中國出口的煤立刻增加了200%的關稅。中美貿易戰的大背景下，華為在美國的研究團隊Futurewei Technologies已經於6月底採取行動，將業務從母公司華為分離出去，美國也損失了相當多的工作崗位。

儘管德國政府內部呼籲增強“網絡主權”的呼聲一浪高過一浪，但這在5G科技領域看起來並不實際。杜伊斯堡─埃森大學5G技術專家格爾伯特（Torsten Gerpott）教授認定：“對德國來說，火車已經駛出站台了。他認為網絡基礎設施建設早已經全球化，關起門來做生意已經不可能了：“德國現在在的最大問題是規模化程度不夠，所以只能依靠海外的企業分一杯羹。 ”

所以這批專家不得不承認已經錯失5G發展的先機，但依然可以勉強保持樂觀：“搞一個網絡跨大西洋共同體依然是可行的，歐美世界可以聯手規劃這個大工程。德國現在就應該把眼光佈局到下一代通信技術革命的建設了，那就是6G。”

SnK Names - Manga

Warning: I may be reading a bit much into this.

We’ve known for a while that the names and surnames in SnK are not randomly distributed, but the recent revelations about Marley and Eldian history encouraged me to look further into the matter. So here we go.

Jaeger: German/Ashkenazi Jewish - hunter.

Ackerman: Acker is German or Old English "ploughed field", making Ackerman "ploughman". Also a common Ashkenazi Jewish surname of Yiddish origin.

Artlert: Presumably an alternate spelling of Arlet, Old German/Anglo-Saxon Name derived from Ernault/Arnolt, of which the elements are "arn", meaning an eagle, and "wald", to rule. Arnoldt/Arnolt appears to also be an Ashkenazi Jewish name, but don't quote me on it.

Reiss: Old German, most commonly used by Ashkenazi Jewish people.

Braun: German and Ashkenazi Jewish nickname derived from German braun (brown) or from the personal name Bruno.

These are the names that stood out the most. Eren's surname is rather obvious, particularly with its use in the first opening of the anime, but the fact that it (like the others) was used by Ashkenazi Jewish people is what I wanted to highlight.

I think everyone's drawn parallels between Marley and Nazi Germany by now, but the three most prominent families/character affected having Ashkenazi Jewish names makes it a lot clearer, and I thought to point it out in case anyone else wants to add their meta on top of this.

My main point of interest, however, is Arlert. If my assumption is correct and the name is a variant of Arlet, which it seems to be, it could be a hint added to the Uri/Armin parallels we've already noticed and highlighted from the manga. I won't come out and say "Armin is definitely part of the royal family", but I personally believe that theory and this possible meaning of his surname supports that.

His appearance has been directly compared to Historia's in the past, we have seen panel parallels between himself and Uri, his family is mysterious and his parents somehow successfully made it outside the walls (a potential threat to their peace) while Uri was King and had Kenny to execute troublemakers. Maybe the last part is overthinking it, really - but it's worth considering.

Triple H may have been right about Roman Reigns

A few weeks ago, Triple H took part in an interview with Sports Illustrated, claiming Roman Reigns was already the top heel in WWE, and calling the requests (including mine) to turn him heel both misplaced and laughable. I largely rejected H’s assumption, and in one key area, I still do, but he’s not entirely wrong. Romey gets heat for being who he is as an employee, rather than the perceived construct of a screen villain. The disdain shoved in his direction emanates from something completely real, and what could be better for a character than legitimate negativity from a crowd that isn’t going anywhere? Does he move merchandise? Yes, and he wouldn’t move anywhere near as much of it as a heel, because almost no one sells gimmicks as an asshole like they do as a buttercup. Does he sell tickets? Not to the level a top guy should, but I can’t tell you how many Reigns signs I see at buildings, and if you attend house shows, the families and the kids are often there strictly to see The Big Dog. Are his matches main event caliber? Absolutely, and it’s inarguable. He’s held his own with AJ Styles and he’s helped ensure Braun Strowman looked good while in the learning phase. He somehow had a great match with the old, overweight Big Show, and he tore the house down with any number of others. By the metric that counts, you may not think he should be in the spot he’s in, but it’s not your decision to make. What power you have resides in your mind and in your remote control. If you stop watching, if you stop paying attention, if you stop going to shows or supporting WWE, maybe you can change the internal paradigm. But even then, it’s a maybe. It can’t just be you. It has to be you and a million of your acquaintances in the WWE Universe. And that’s not happening. He gets booed out of nearly every building he steps in, and as he’s leaned into it a bit more, it’s working well. His attitude in the lead-up to WrestleMania became increasingly arrogant, and his reaction Monday night was basically a middle finger to the smart community. So, in that way, Triple H was accurate in his assessment. Where my problem originally lied with H’s comments is in how Reigns has been booked as this “top heel.” If he’s the lead antagonist, he should be used to elevate top protagonists. When he’s pitted against heels, it defeats the purpose. The concern is Roman Reigns isn’t creating new stars, because he’s written like a conquering babyface, despite generating a heel reaction. However, think of who he’s been working as of late. Is Braun Strowman a heel? I don’t really think so. He doesn’t generally cheat. He’s just presented as the big and scary monster. Even so, many fans like him and have embraced that character. Certainly The Undertaker wasn’t a heel, and Reigns played the jerk during the entire angle. Was AJ Styles REALLY a heel? He was, but he still received beaucoups of cheers, because he’s AJ Styles. While Roman isn’t working Sami Zayn and The New Day, perhaps WWE has been a little craftier than we’ve given them credit for as of late. Roman isn’t working against pure heels and he isn’t working against pure babyfaces. He’s working against rising or existing stars. He’s performing alongside others who generate mixed reactions, but are top flight talents in the WWE hierarchy and mindset. So what’s the real issue here? I think I’ve figured it out. Listen carefully. Are you ready? Here comes some education for you. There isn’t one. Roman Reigns is exactly who and what he should be. He doesn’t need to “turn,” he just needs to consistently toe the line and be this guy. He’s generating massive reactions and the known fact that Vince McMahon is so infatuated with him provides more heat than anything that a mediocre writer could put together on a script. As long as Roman continues to be the superstar he’s been over the past six weeks, he’s golden. He’s going to piss a lot of people off and dazzle others. When he works Brock Lesnar next year at WrestleMania, unless the plan changes again, both will receive plenty of love and plenty of hate, but it will feel like an enormous event. The hate for Reigns may have made sense at one point, but it’s now utterly insane. He may never cut a promo like Arn or be as varied or crisp in the ring as Kurt. He may not fly like Ospreay or sizzle like Nakamura, but in WWE, he’s cast perfectly. I’ve never been a “shades of grey” fan, or haven’t been since Austin took his last bump, but I see the value in toying with marks who think they’re in the know, and using their naivete and emotional outbursts to create buzz. If Amway had gone silent on Monday night and Roman walked to the ring in an atmosphere where we could actually hear each step he took, the contingent of “too cool for school” fans might have actually landed a blow. But what actually happened was the exact opposite, and it backed up each of the five words Reigns spoke ten minutes later. “This is my yard now.” Yeah holmes, it damn sure is. Truer words have never been spoken. And we’re better for it.
