"In this time of social distancing, I’m thinking of those who carry sickness as a constant presence, and the disabled, chronically ill, and immunosuppressed folks for whom distance (social or otherwise) is part of their everyday experiences. Thomas Woodruff’s 1997 Wishing Well, which he painted in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, feels especially poignant this week as we think about how we care for ourselves and one another. The image serves as a reminder of the ways that healing and wellness take on different meanings for different people, and how they often reflect factors of race, gender, class, sexuality, citizenship, and (dis)ability."
