Aspen to Denver
We drove incessantly from Aspen to Denver
How far is Denver from Aspen? If you can make this trip without stopping, the answer is fast.
Continuous driving: 198 miles or 319 km
Driving time: 3 hours 28 minutes
In fact, you may want to add a buffer for the holidays, gas, or food. To get a better idea of how long this trip will take, figure out how many hours it will take to scroll down and get to the stop.
Aspen flights do not stop in Denver
Now you think you have a private jet and can fly the fastest direct line between Aspen and Denver, Colorado. Due to the curvature of the earth, the shortest distance is in fact the distance from the "big circle" or the distance from the "flight in the snow", calculated according to Vincent's formula, which is repeated.
Flight distance: 105 miles or 169 km
Flight time: 24 minutes
The direct flight distance is 93 miles less than the highway, so the driving distance is about 1.9 times.
Your plane flies faster than a car, so flight time is 1/5 of the time you have to fly.
It is a relatively short flight on a private jet, but you may plan to book a commercial flight. In this case, how many minutes do you have to drive to the local airport, wait for safety, wait for a taxi on the runway, land at another airport and get to your destination? Scroll down to see more realistic calculations that incorporate these factors into accurate real-time flight scheduling.
 Aspen - Denver Road
Let’s say you plan a trip to Denver and you want to stop exploring. If it is a real trip, you can visit places of interest or dine at the best restaurants. Trippy helps you discover your travel plans thoroughly.
Departure: 1-day drive
Once the route is fully developed, we can estimate the total travel time for that trip.
Driving time: 5.5 hours on the side of the road
Aspen - Denver Airport and Aviation
Assuming you have a private plane to calculate the above performance, we want to know the time spent in the air from one city to another. But for the most part, we fly with commercial airlines (either by first-class or by bus). So, in fact, we have to wait for our flight before we reach the airport and spend all our extra time at our destination. We created flight routes to various airports to enjoy a real tour. Finally, you can customize this plan by selecting these airports and flights. But for now, here are some examples we have selected to give you an idea of how working between airports works.
Departure Airport: Aspen Pitkin County (ASE) Airport
Airport: Denver International Airport (DEN)
Based on the selected airport and the distance from the airport to the city, we can estimate the airport and the time of arrival at the airport.
Arrival at the airport: 11 minutes
Arrival point: 56 minutes
Now let’s take a look at the ASE-DEN demo flight and see how long it takes to get a taxi running.
Commercial flight time: 40 minutes
We now get an overview of all travel times from Aspen to Denver, including airport round trip, airport waiting time, and 2 hours airport waiting time with security phone and door. The actual flight itself.
Total travel time: 4 hours

Getting Pets to Okinawa
I went through so much stress while trying to figure out how I was going to get our two dogs over to Okinawa by myself. I wrote down my whole personal process of flying Air Mobility Command (AMC)/Patriot Express so I could ease the minds of any others who have to do this!
Obviously my experience is unique to me, but for the most part, I hope that my advice and experience can be useful for others during their process.
To start, click here if you need to learn all of the required steps and documentation needed for your pets: Importing Pets to Japan and also a cheat sheet: Importing Pets Sequence
** One thing that these documents don’t tell you, is that if you are flying AMC/Patriot Express, you do NOT have to submit an advanced notification form to Japan. Some people recommend it anyway, because it can’t hurt! In case something were to go wrong and you end up having to change your flight plans to a commercial flight, submitting the Advanced Notification Form would be beneficial. That being said, I didn’t submit one but that was my personal choice! **
** There are several different names for the military flight that you will take, AMC or Patriot Express, are what I most often heard. For this post, I will be referencing the flight as “AMC” because that is what it is labeled as and referred to at the airport. **
The AMC flight only leaves from the Seattle/SEATAC Airport in Washington. I did delayed dependent travel due to finishing school in Minnesota. Since I was flying after my husband with our two dogs, I had to travel solo and figure this out. We couldn’t afford to commercially fly our dogs from Minnesota to Seattle, so I rented a car and drove out there.
***If you are in this situation (with pets + luggage), you NEED someone to come with you to help! I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the help of a friend who came to assist me.
If you are renting a car: The car rental return location is not connected to the airport. It’s not far, but still...after returning your rental, you will need to take the shuttle bus from the car rental return location back to the terminal. I had a friend who lives near the Seattle airport, meet me when I got to the terminal to help me with my unloading process (two large suitcases, a carry-on, two large dogs + their two large kennels!) - Picture will be seen below -
Once at the departure location, I asked one of the volunteer workers for a large cart to load up my dogs kennels and luggage on. My dogs are large so I needed a longer cart to fit both kennels on and then I loaded my suitcases on top. After unloading my car, my friend stayed at the terminal with my dogs and luggage while I went to return my rental. Just follow the signs for “car rental return” out of the airport and it’ll lead you right to where you need to go. I just had to pull up, tell them my name and they asked if I wanted a printed receipt or email copy. Then I walked to the shuttle bus to return to the terminal.
While I was doing that, the volunteer worker at the airport terminal led my friend and pushed my cart of belongings to the USO. This is where I met them when I got back to the terminal.
Tumblr media
The USO is on the Mezzanine level, just one level up from the ticketing/check-in counters. If you don’t know what the USO is, in basic terms, it’s a lounge for military members and their families to stay while waiting for flights or travel arrangements.
There are elevators or stairs that you can use to get up there. The USO is on the complete opposite side of the airport than the AMC departure spot is. When you drive up to the departures, AMC is the very last drop off spot at the end. The volunteer workers work for tips so I gave the guy $10 for pushing my things up there. Once at the USO, my friend left and I checked in at the front desk. All of the people working there are so friendly and helpful to answer any questions.
I arrived at the airport really early, I checked into the USO at around 6:30pm Wednesday night. (With the flight not leaving til 0850 Thursday morning).
Since it was a “flight night”, the lady told me that I wouldn’t be able to store my dog kennels in their luggage room because there would be so many people coming in that will need to store their luggage in there. So I left my dogs in their kennels right outside to the left of the USO entrance and sat with them out there on the bench for pretty much the whole night.
The nice thing about where the USO is located, is that there really wasn’t anyone up there in the hallway unless they were other military members/families coming in. So it was pretty quiet up there and I was able to leave my dogs out there if I wanted to go into the USO to get some food or drinks.
Side note!! I believe that at certain times of the day/night on overseas flight nights, the USO limits the people allowed in. So if you’re not active duty or traveling on orders, you might not be able to come in.. just so you know! Some people got turned away when they came by due to flight delays for their leisure travel and just wanted somewhere to hang out while they waited.
I was able to let my dogs out and just have them hang out with me outside of their kennels as long as they were leashed. This was nice, so I could let them stretch out and interact with them before the flight where they’d be kenneled for long hours.
There are two locations, one on each end of the airport outside the check-in counters, to let your dogs go to the bathroom. It’s a very tiny area it was mostly dirt/rock with bushes on it so it’s not the nicest place. But luckily my dogs aren’t too picky on where they go potty, so they were fine. There is a poop bag dispenser and garbage can put there in case you need to pick up after them!
While I was waiting, I decided to go down to the AMC (Air Mobility Command) office which is located against the back wall on the baggage claim level. There was a lady named Heather working and she gladly looked over my dogs’ paperwork to make sure I had everything I needed. That gave me piece of mind to know I would be okay.
0200 was when the check-in process started. One of the USO workers was directing people to make their way down to the check-in desk. I went down at about 0300, and again I needed a cart for my dog’s kennels. The USO has carts that you can use but make sure one is available for you. The airport worker wouldn’t let me keep my original cart upstairs with me, so I had to find a different one for checking in. At that time of the morning, the airport volunteers are not there, so it was really hard for me to find another cart (since they lock them all up). So if a USO worker can save a cart for you, have them do that! That will make your life easier if you have big kennels to haul.
Once I got downstairs with my dogs in their kennels and my luggage stacked on top, there was a lady specifically checking pet paperwork and kennel requirements. I hadn’t even gotten in line yet and she came to me to take my pets’ information.
This is the information that she needed from me:
Passport (the one issued by military aka No Fee Blue Passport)
Copy of official orders
Web orders (USMC)
Area clearance
For my pet paperwork, this is what she asked for:
Health certificates for pet (copy)
FAVN report for rabies titer (copy)
Rabies certificates signed by vet (copy)
**She did not want my dog’s original signed paperwork, she wanted COPIES ONLY**
Make sure you have several copies of everything. I had 5 copies of each piece of paperwork, plus the originals. Also, double check to make sure all the information about your pet matches correctly for each piece of paperwork. Make sure the microchip numbers are correct on each document!
She provided me with a plastic sleeve to put the pet documents in and it sticks to the top of the kennels. I had brought with gallon sized ziplock bags for this reason, but they provide you with them. I guess it doesn’t hurt to be over-prepared!
The price of taking your dogs is supposed to be determined by their weight... well, all she did was ask me how much each dog weighed with their kennels. So I gave my best estimated guess (100lb & 80lb) so it was $250 per dog for me.
From the AMC website, this is what the pet travel fees are:
A combined weight ≤ 70 lbs will be charged as one piece of excess baggage ($125).
A combined weight of 71-140 lbs will be charged as two pieces of excess baggage ($250)
The lady took my credit card right there and came back with my receipt to sign.
The AMC website can tell you all necessary requirements for your pet travel either in cabin or cargo. If they are traveling cargo, here’s what I found:
hard sided kennel
Ventilation on at least 3 sides (I purchased my kennels from Amazon) Link here: Aspen Pet Porter
The size I got for both of my dogs were the 70-90lb size, so they have enough room to stand completely up with 3 inches above their head/ears, lay down comfortably and to turn around in the kennel. Those are requirements from AMC when choosing a kennel. My shepherd/lab mix is a little bit too tall for the 70-90lb kennel (she fit fine, but did not have enough room above her head when she stood up according to the AMC requirements). So, instead of paying twice as much for the next size up in kennels, my dad helped make a kennel height extension with some 2 by 4 pieces of wood! We saved a lot of money by doing this.
Tumblr media
More requirements:
Metal bolts to fasten the kennel together (my kennel came with metal bolts but plastic nuts that screwed on.. so I went and bought my own nuts and bolts at Home Depot.)
Make sure you have a bolt for every hole! The only issue I ran into during my pet check-in, was that she told me I needed a bolt in each hole in the back of my one dog’s kennel (Picture below).
I had a bolt in the two outer small holes, but not in the middle one... I figured it would be fine, because it’s not like my dog was going to escape! Lol. But luckily I was overly paranoid about things going wrong, so I had packed extra nuts and bolts! Phew! :)
Tumblr media
Zip ties - they require you to zip tie the doors of the kennels before flight (I bought the reusable zip ties, so they don’t have to be cut... but they cut them off anyway when we landed in Yokota, so it doesn’t have to be the reusable ones!)
**please confirm with AMC to make sure what the up to date requirements are!! What I am listing is from my experience, and I have not recently looked what the updated requirements may be!**
Things that were not technically required, but recommended (and everyone with a pet had these) are:
Clip on dish that went on the inside of the kennel door. Link: Clip on Dish
Large non spill water containers that I zip tied from the outside of the kennel doors (giant hamster water things) I got mine at Walmart! Link here: Pet No Drip Water Bottles
Puppy pee pads - set on the bottom of the kennel and then a blanket on top (also bought at Walmart). In case your pet does have an accident, you can take these out when you stop and hopefully it will soak most of it up!
Once the lady took my paperwork and I paid for the dogs, I went in line for the luggage drop off. There is a separate line for families and for single military members during the check in process. I probably waited in line for an hour and a half. They weighed all of my bags, my carry on and personal item together and then my two check bags together. You are allowed two large checked bags not to exceed 70lb each. The weight of your carry-ons doesn’t matter, just the dimensions. I was told my carry-on needed to be no larger than 9x14x22” for total of 45inches. He also asked me how much I weigh.. lol. I was told that they just want to know the estimated weight of the plane when they get done, I guess?
Once I got my bags taken and I was checked in, I was told to keep my dogs with me until 0600 and I was to bring them back down to that same location where I checked in. So for the time being, I pushed them back upstairs to outside the USO and just hung out again until I had to bring them back.
At about 0530, I let them out to go potty one last time, and then pushed them back down to the check-in place. There are workers there to direct you on what to do. At this point is where I put the zip ties on and sat with them until they told me we could go. It was time to say goodbye to my pups until our first stop :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the lady said we could go to the security line. The line wasn’t too bad. There are multiple security checkpoints. The lady told us to go through the security line near Jet Blue, which is towards the middle of the terminal.
Once I got through security, my gate was S12. (I don’t know if this is where the AMC flight leaves every single time or not, but this is what my experience was). You need to go downstairs to the tram that will take you to the S Gates. After getting through security, you will be at the A gates, the tram first stops at the B gates from there (which is where the AMEX Centurion Lounge is right across from gate B3.. for any of you AMEX platinum card holders! You can get into the lounge for free and get free food and drinks!) The tram then next stops at the S gates where you will get off at.
We started the boarding process around 0800. My flight was scheduled to leave at 0850. They boarded families with small children first, then higher ranks, then they called people by rows. Service members need their ID and boarding pass, family members needed their passports and boarding pass.
Flight:
The first flight is about 10 hours. After not sleeping for like 24 hours, I was ready to sleep on the plane!! The seats are nice and they recline significantly so you can relax. They have little TVs that you can watch movies or shows on and they provide you with: pillow, blanket, ear buds, two meals and drinks.
I slept for the first 7 hours of the flight lol... so I missed the first meal but the second one was good. I ate the chicken parmesan with noodles and vegetables. Also they had bread and butter, crackers and a cheese slice, potato salad and cheesecake! It wasn’t too bad considering it was prepackaged airline food!
We landed in Yokota first, we got off the plane as they told us to, right off onto the tarmac. Once inside the small airport they gave us directions of what to do/where to go and what time to be back. They then let us pet owners let out our pets for about a half an hour. There is a small fenced in grassy area that you can put them in to go to the bathroom and stuff. They also provided water in bowls which was really nice!
You can leave your stuff on the plane, bring any money or whatever if you want snacks at the vending machine inside. Not much for options. For pets - just bring their leashes and extra zip ties to re-fasten their kennel when you put them back in. I gave my pups plenty of water and a small amount of food to hold them over for the remainder of the trip. They did really well! No accidents in the kennel and they both seemed happy and normal! Phew!! What a relief, they were my number one concern in this whole process!
Tumblr media
The layover was about 2 hours and then we boarded again and headed to Iwakuni. This flight is only about 1 hour and 45 min. I was surprised because we were able to let our dogs out on this stop as well! For over an hour! They had a grass area outside for them to be at and a spicket to give them water.
There was a Japanese man at a food truck outside so you could buy some food and drinks. I got myself a hot dog and a soda :)
Then off on our last flight, to land in our final destination: Okinawa!
We landed on Kadena Air Base, went through customs and then to the baggage claim. My dogs were already there waiting for me. You will see a counter where the pets are, with base veterinarian staff. I handed the base veterinarian staff my official paperwork for them. This is where they take the original copies of everything, including your pet’s Health Certificate. They will have you sign some forms, and tell you everything you need to know. You have 72 business hours to take your pets into the vet on Kadena Air Base to get looked over.
I landed in Okinawa on Friday night, so I didn’t take my dogs in until Monday morning. They have specific walk in hours for people who are there to have their pets get their initial inspection done. There is a long wait time, so get there early if possible! You’ll need another set of copies of your paperwork for the base vet as well. Make sure you have plenty of copies!!
My pups are now officially done with quarantine and they are doing well.
Tumblr media
It was a lot of stress to deal with, but so worth having them out here with us for these 3 years! I hope this post helps anyone who is stressing about the process of PCSing with a pet!
Thanks for reading!

Private Jet Charter: Tips on Traveling to a High Traffic Locale
Tumblr media
High traffic is inevitable at private airports during popular events or holiday seasons (think Super Bowl or winter in Aspen). With that in mind, we have put together some information and helpful tips to ensure that your private jet charter travel to bustling airports is both relaxing and stress-free.
"What is an STMP?" Special Traffic Management Programs (STMP's) are implemented for special events that attract thousands of people and aircraft to participating airports. The FAA requires users to make arrival and departure reservations to and from these airports to manage the flow of arrivals and departures for these events.
Tumblr media
"What is a slot time?" Slot times refer to airports expecting high traffic volume due to special events or seasonal activity. Slot times are issued to stagger incoming flight traffic to relieve air traffic control duties. Slot time reservations are typically available 72 hours before the estimated time of arrival.
Tumblr media
Private Jet Travel Tips:
• Be flexible with your departure time requests. Allow a window for departure times. Slot times will not be assigned more than 72 hours in advance of the flight departure request.
• Avoid changing flight dates & times. Slot times are valuable and go quickly, so try to stick to your flight schedule to avoid conflicts.
• Arrive on time. Particularly in mountainous areas, weather can change rapidly. The closer you leave to your intended time, the better opportunity you have to guarantee your arrival time. So if your slot departure is 8 am, please allow time for boarding so the jet will be ready and in position for an 8 am departure.

Travel Experts Reveal 10 Ways To Save On Travel
We’re not mathematicians, but we’re pretty sure the following theorem holds true: There is an inverse relationship between how badly you need a vacation and how comfortably you can afford one. That is, the more you need a vacation, the less likely you are to be in the financial position to pull one together. That’s what it feels like in our experience, anyway. Call it the algebra of exhaustion.
Tumblr media
iStock But what if there’s a tricky workaround? What if you could take that sorely needed week away and come home to a livable bank account? We reached out to a handful of travel agents and vacation writers to see if the dream is achievable—and it turns out, it just may be. If I had had to pay for hotels, vacation rentals or even hostels in each of these expensive cities, I would never have been able to afford the trips. Here’s what we learned, all boiled down into 10 thrifty tips that’ll save you hard-earned cash on your next getaway:
1. Remember the Rule of Tuesdays.
Tuesday is an important day of the week in the world of air travel. If you can travel on a Tuesday or even Wednesday, you’ll probably get the cheapest flight of the week. Generally, people do their traveling on Thursday, Friday, or over the weekend. Demand drives prices up, so you’re more likely to find a cheap flight during off-peak times—usually a Tuesday or Wednesday.
Tumblr media
iStock At least, that’s what we’ve always heard. But is it really true? Yes, according to news outlet CNBC. While there’s no magic day to purchase the best deals, the cheapest days to travel are Tuesday, followed by Wednesday, and then Saturday. Airlines use algorithms to determine prices, and these are constantly being updated based off of sales and availability, says travel writer and vice president of travel company Pruvo, Doron Nadivi.
Tumblr media
iStock.com/scyther5 “There is also an old myth about ordering 57 days prior to travel. Both of these suggestions are not true,” Nadivi tells us. “Last year I booked a flight from Costa Rica to New Zealand…, returning from Bangkok to Costa Rica months prior to travel. I put an alarm to check 57 days before departure and the exact same flight number, same route, same website cost four times more.” Of course, there are always the many price tracking sites out there. Some sites even show long-term price estimates for flights, so you can plan your vacation around your budget.
Tumblr media
iStock Still, the real trick when purchasing a flight is to follow through when the price is good. If you see a great deal, get it, now. Chances are it’ll be gone in a few hours. The “book on Tuesday six weeks out” rule may be inaccurate, but there’s plenty of technology available to get you where you want to be for the best possible price. Use it.
2. Hit the shoulder season.
What’s the shoulder season, you ask? We explain—plus give you a few quick tips on how to avoid the tourists and get affordable flightsin the video below:
3. Be a little impulsive.
There are pros and cons to this tried-and-true technique for a quick escape from the day-to-day grind. But asking for a “cheap ticket to anywhere” doesn’t work like it used to.
Tumblr media
iStock Once upon a time, you could walk up to a ticket counter and get a cheap, last-second deal for an undersold flight. It was great if you didn’t much care where you were going. But those days are over. Today, most flights are overbooked, and last-minute flying can actually be more expensive, not less. Still, the days of the 11th-hour deal aren’t over entirely. It’s just that you have to use technology to take advantage now. Try signing up for your favorite airline’s email list. That way you’ll see any last-minute specials, and you can easily build a trip around what’s cheap. You can also check out coupon sites like Groupon, or LivingSocial for luxurious, planned getaways for a fraction of the normal price.
Tumblr media
iStock To improve your odds of scoring a deal, try to visit less popular cities. For instance, Aspen, Colorado is a beautiful ski town, but it’s also busy and expensive. Why not hit the slopes in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, or Brian Head, Utah, instead? You can beat the crowds, save some cash, and discover new places with this tactic.
4. Ditch the hotel.
Hotels are great, but with a new generation of travelers hotels have taken a hit. Just like Uber and Lyft are changing the world of ground transportation, Airbnb and VRBO are laying siege on the hotel industry.
Tumblr media
iStock Through these and similar services, you can find great deals on short-term house rentals instead of booking a bunch of hotel rooms for larger travel parties. There are also smaller sites in most every major city that will have a listing of units that are available for travelers to rent. Do your research and you’ll find the options are practically endless—and very affordable. You can also use home-sharing apps and basically stay in a new city for free “in exchange for caring for someone else’s home and pets,” says author and world-traveler Kelly Hayes-Raitt, who traveled the world for four years straight while reporting her book, Living Large in Limbo, and racked up quite a few tricks during the process. “I get unpaid accommodations, a kitchen to make my own meals and other homey perks like free cable and DVDs, use of a car, and no nickel-and-dime fees hotels tack on.”
Tumblr media
Nishant Choksi for The New Yorker There are sites to set up accommodations for travelers to house-sit, or to actually swap homes for a period of time. This is a great way to get to know a new city without spending a ton of money. “During the past eight years, I’ve house-sat in London for two months during the Olympics, Berlin, Amsterdam, Hanoi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Osaka,” Hayes-Raitt tells us. “If I had had to pay for hotels, vacation rentals or even hostels in each of these expensive cities, I would never have been able to afford the trips.”
5. Get off the plane.
If you have some wiggle room for your travel plans, let the gate attendant know. That way you can be put on the short list if they need volunteers. If you’re flying on United or Delta, you can bid on how much money it’d take for you to give up your seat. After the David Dao debacle of 2017, United Airlines has raised the cap on how much they’re willing to pay for passenger seats on overbooked flights to $10,000. That would make for some vacation.
Tumblr media
iStock In the moment, there’s often the panic-induced sense that all you want to do is reach your destination, but if you psych yourself up to sit around the airport for a couple of hours to make some serious miles or money, then you’ll be good to go. With everything going on after the United incident, you should know that airlines do have the right to remove any passenger (except for people with disabilities and unaccompanied minors).
6. Brown bag it.
We know a granola bar isn’t the same as that breakfast burrito you could buy at the airport, but it could save you a good chunk of change. Airport food tends to be more expensive than the already-pricey food at professional sporting events and theme parks, so if you have some time to spare, make yourself a meal and bring it. Some food is okay to pass through security, and if you have kids, you can always bring powdered milk and make them a drink in the airport instead of hitting up the terminal’s Starbucks. If you don’t have time to make something yourself, you can still pass over the expensive airport-specific restaurants.
Tumblr media
iStock One of our favorite options is going to Subway and getting a footlong sandwich, then eating half at the airport and half on the flight. You can save yourself some good money this way. (Just don’t get the tuna; your fellow passengers won’t thank you for that.)
Tumblr media
http://istock.com/amriphoto After you arrive at your vacation spot, take advantage of any local grocery stores and cook for yourself. Purchasing food, even pre-made meals, at a grocery store instead of eating out all the time will save you a fortune while you’re traveling.
7. Hydrate on the cheap.
Everyone knows you can’t bring liquids through security, including water. But you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it at a water fountain or fill station.
Tumblr media
iStock It’s crucial to drink up on the plane; people tend to get really dehydrated when they travel because of the recycled air, the altitude, and the fact you don’t really drink a lot of liquids while you’re in flight (no one likes asking people to get up so they can use the restroom). This will keep you hydrated and save you from buying a $4 bottle of water.
8. Find new ways to get around.
Asking a friend to pick you up from the airport is almost as bad as asking them to help you move. Nobody wants to do it, but most people don’t feel like they can say no. However, in most major cities, there is public transportation that can take you to and from the airport.
Tumblr media
iStock If you don’t have easy access to public transportation, you can try to take an Uber or Lyft, which will often save you some money compared with a taxi, which may overcharge via a large airport tax. Be aware, though, that in some cities, Uber and Lyft cannot pick up passengers from the airport.
Tumblr media
iStock Do some research on your destination’s transportation before you go. Both the Google Maps app and the Citymapper app can provide you with information and schedules for trains, busses, and more. Where possible, take the monorail, subway, or bus instead of a taxi. Alternatively, you can always take the opportunity to explore the city on foot and walk to your final destination.
9. Take a cue from extreme couponers.
There are coupons for literally everything. If you know you’re going to be in a new city, take advantage of the ones that are for first-time customers only. Apps like Groupon and LivingSocial have deals for activities and food that could cut your costs in half.
Tumblr media
iStock Another way to go about saving money on food is searching hashtags on Instagram for specific locations. If you find food pics that look appetizing, get in touch with the restaurant and see if they have any special deals or happy hours.
10. Book directly.
Airlines often offer more flexibility and cheaper fees than third-party sellers. A lot of websites will scour the internet for the best deals—which is great if you’re short on time or organizational skills—but then you usually get stuck with few options and little flexibility, since you’re booking through a third party.
Tumblr media
iStock The best thing to do is use a search site like Skyscanner or Google Flights to find the cheapest flight, then head over to that airline’s website and book directly through them. When you book direct, you’ll get cheaper flights, and usually more flexibility and options for your trip.
Tumblr media

Is there a cost effective alternative to the Garmin 770?
For years, there were only two choices for a retrofit multi-function GPS navigator—either Garmin’s GNS430 or GNS530—or the current GTN650 and GTN750. Bendix King offered the KLN94 standalone GPS, but it wasn’t an all-in-one WAAS navigator with an open architecture. It also lacked a comm and nav radio and it didn’t have any multi function capability.
These are all the features the KSN770 was supposed to have when it was announced several years ago. It’s no secret that the KSN770 stalled in the R&D phase and essentially became obsolete before it was even brought to market. But a partnership between Bendix King and Aspen Avionics ultimately advanced the product to the certification stage.
Hybrid Control
Bendix King believes that many pilots aren’t entirely sold on a total touchscreen interface, so they designed the KSN770 with a combination of touchscreen and hard buttons and knobs. This hybrid interface arguably brings the best of both worlds, especially for pilots that prefer to interface with the unit the old fashioned way.
“You can interface with the unit using knobs, touchscreen, onscreen keyboard control, or with the joystick. Old grey-beards may still prefer to transfer the radio frequencies from standby to active using a familiar transfer key, so we added it to the KSN770 bezel,” said Bendix King chief test pilot Doug Hawley during our recent demo flight.
Tuning the radio frequencies on the KSN770 can be accomplished with an onscreen touch keypad but you can still twist, turn and tune the radios with a familiar concentric knob and adjust the volume with a familiar round volume control. The comm radio frequency window is strategically positioned in the lower left corner of the display, in close vicinity to the tuning knob and frequency transfer button. The nav radio—including glideslope receiver—is tuned in similar fashion and has a dedicated frequency window in the upper left portion of the screen.
Since the user interface was mostly designed by Aspen Avionics, users of the Aspen Evolution PFD and MFD products will recognize the color and format of the KSN770s onscreen hot keys. There’s also an eight-position joystick—another way of entering data and manipulating the map screens. This joystick also serves as a cursor control device (CCD). The CCD trickles down from jet FMS systems, including the Honeywell Apex integrated avionics suite that’s in the Pilatus PC12NG turboprop.
You could also enter data in a QWERTY pop-up window. The screen is resistive, which means putting pressure on the surface with your finger or an object commands a given function on the screen. Bendix King says the touchscreen will easily work with gloves. What you can’t do is pinch zoom with two fingers as you would on a tablet display. Instead, the joystick is used for map panning and dedicated map zoom soft keys are placed on the left side of the bezel.
The 5.7-inch active matrix LCD screen is full VGA and has a 640 by 480 pixel count. The unit stands 5.25 inches tall, which is slightly larger than Garmin’s old GNS530. If you’re moving up from a GNS530, we will need to restack the avionics rack. Still, it shouldn’t require nearly as much work as fitting a Garmin GTN750. It requires a full 6.0 inches of vertical height.
The onscreen hot keys carry over from Aspen’s Evolution flight displays. They sit along the right side of the screen and are aligned with and displayed adjacent to their corresponding soft key. As an example, when configuring the map, hot keys and the corresponding soft keys are used to turn on and off various information overlays for each map. The best way to grasp the concept is to understand that hot means active, so the hot keys activate a function and turn green to indicate that the function is active.
VFR, IFR or Both
“The KSN770 was designed to give both VFR and IFR pilots tremendous amounts of information. You can customize the displays for the way you think and display as little or as much information as you want at one time,” said Hawley. You can configure it for single-screen or split-screen view, add a single thumbnail view of traffic, for example, or two thumbnails for displaying both traffic and terrain, while also displaying the map page as a third screen. The map can be configured for VFR or IFR (low or high airways) while traffic, terrain and weather—including XM data from Aspen’s EWR50 datalink receiver can be overlaid on each. The system is also compatible with the L-3 WX500 Stormscope. Georeferenced NACO charts—including taxi diagrams—come standard and are provided by Seattle Avionics. Navigation data is loaded through a USB port on the front bezel and the data is purchased through Honeywell’s WingMan Services data subscription division, via download.
The system can display a variety of TCAS, TAS and TIS systems, including Garmin’s GTX330/33 and Avidyne TAS. Traffic is displayed on a dedicated traffic page, in a thumbnail, and as a pop-up during traffic alert conditions.
Standard is an advisory terrain function with typical terrain coloring that’s displayed on the map page or on a dedicated terrain screen. The system also interfaces with the Bendix King KGP560 EGPWS.
Real-Deal FMS
At the core of the KSN770 is Honeywell’s WAAS-enabled GPS and FMS (flight management system). VFR pilots will find that single-point navigation is simple, especially with the Direct key on the bezel. Here you can select airports and navaids using the onscreen QWERTY keypad or by scrolling with the joystick. Point to point navigation is about as simple as it gets, in our view.
On the other hand, IFR pilots who aren’t familiar with operating a FMS will have a lot to learn when it comes to building flight plans and loading procedures. That’s because the KSN770 is a true FMS and you can create and load an entire flight from departure to approach before you even leave the ground. Users that are familiar with the KLN94 GPS (and Garmin’s GNS and GTN navigators) will recognize the Procedure hot key. It brings up a menu for loading departure, arrival and approach procedures.
There’s also an onscreen FMS function that’s referred to as “graphical flight planning”. The flight plan window has a dragbar that you slide with a finger to view the way points in the flight plan (or you can use the joystick). As you scroll though the flight plan, the flight plan way points are identified on the map screen, so you can watch the construction of the route.
Open Architecture
Impressive is the KSN770s ability to interface with a variety of remote systems, including new and older navigation displays. For instance, not all aircraft will be equipped with an integrated PFD, but the system is compatible with some traditional analog CDI displays, including the Bendix King KI209A and KCS55A HSI system. It also interfaces with many existing analog and digital autopilot systems—providing GPS roll steering and full nav tracking capability. The KSN770 is fully compatible with the Aspen Evolution PFD and MFD and with the Bendix King  KI825 electronic HSI.
The system will also interface with the Honeywell RDR2000/2100 and RDS84-series weather radar. The weather data can overlay on the active flight plan and display on a dedicated weather radar screen.
The unit does display ADS-B data to include Aspen’s ADS-B receivers. The KSN770s WAAS GPS is an appropriate source for ADS-B Out and can feed the KT74 1090ES transponder.
Back in the Game The KSN770 came to market on the heels of two other newer products from Bendix King: the KT74 Mode S ADS-B transponder and the KMA30 audio control panel (a product that’s made by PS Engineering but wears a Bendix King faceplate).
With a list price of $14,141, the KSN770 may not attract the lower end of the market that’s been waiting for the low-cost alternative products that Bendix King initially promised. It is however a powerful FMS that can hold its own against the Garmin 750 that is 30% cheaper and plays well with other legacy components in your aircraft without costly patch units.
“The KSN770 is the first of many products that Bendix King is developing as we move toward the future. It’s the cornerstone of the diverse product line we plan to build going forward,” said Roger Dykmann, Bendix King’s director of  product development.

The Overhead Compartment with John Brenkus
Shining a spotlight on celebrities and athletes who love to travel. Created and developed by Stacy Steponate Greenberg.
Sports and Science: who would have thought those two could ever come together as seamlessly as, say, chocolate and peanut butter? One man did, and his name is John Brenkus. The creator of the popular Sports Science features on ESPN, Brenkus has captured audiences across the country and beyond by relating scientific facts to sports in an informative and entertaining way. Brenkus can do more than just talk about sports, he has also competed in numerous Ironman Triathlons around the world, allowing him a first hand understanding of what it takes to be an elite athlete. Now, his latest endeavor, “The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus,” will explore the moment his guests credit with changing their lives forever. The Overhead Compartment was glad to visit John in his laboratory to learn more about sports and life through the eyes of a unique broadcasting talent.
The Overhead Compartment with John Brenkus starts now…
OC: You’re the creator of the highly popular Sports Science features, where you take the scientific angle of how world class athletes do what they do. What sport does science prove has the most gifted athletes?
JB: It depends on how we’re defining “gifted”. Elite athletes in every sport are truly “gifted” in that they have the talent, focus, desire and coaching to allow them to excel. If we’re talking about the traditional definition of “gifted athlete” where we factor in strength, speed, coordination, agility, etc. then I would say the NBA has the highest percentage of “gifted athletes”. However, that doesn’t mean the NFL, NHL, MLS, MLB don’t have the same kind of athletes. The NBA just has a higher percentage.
OC: What is the most common misconception about the athleticism of today’s players?
JB: The most common misconception is that elite athletes simply roll out of bed and are just awesome. The truth is, the difference between good and great comes down to desire…the willingness to work harder and to be smarter than everyone else. At the elite level, all the athletes are amazing, but the best of the best simply work harder and understand the game better.
OC: Could science tell us who is better, Lebron James or Michael Jordan?
JB: They are two totally different players. Lebron is more versatile (he can literally play all 5 positions on the court), but everything MJ touched in the basketball world turned to gold…he had that intangible factor of always making everyone around him better and breaking new ground in what we thought was athletically possible. When it’s all said and done, I’m sure we will be putting both on an equal pedestal.
OC: Which findings you’ve made over the years have come as the biggest surprise to you?
JB: The biggest surprise is how many truly elite athletes are my size (or right around my size). I’m 5’9’’ (average weight) and there are a ton of athletes in the NFL who play receiver, running back, and DB…there are even some QBs who are right around my size. In the NBA, Isaiah Thomas is dominating- and he and I literally look eye to eye at each other. MLB, MLS are full of athletes whose frames are almost identical to mine (except they are much stronger)! Everyone always says “Man, those athletes in the lab are total freaks).” I like to comeback and say, “You’d be shocked how many are just average in size (like me). Those are the athletes who impress me the most.”
OC: Over the many athlete interviews you have done, which was the most memorable?
JB: We are now in season 10 and have done around 1,500 segments for ESPN alone, so it’s always hard to pick one. The truth is, we have the world’s greatest athletes doing crazy, cool experiments that illustrate how amazing they are. All of them are incredible!
OC: What is your favorite sport to watch?
JB: I watch the NFL and NBA the most…but I have to be a consumer of all of them:) I was born in the DC area in 1971, so I grew up with 3 Super Bowls with the Redskins, an NBA Championship with the Bullets and even a World Series with the Orioles! So I was a HUGE sports fan growing up…and it’s never left me.
OC: You are now launching a podcast called The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus, which explores the moments a guest might credit with changing their life forever. What was your Brink of Midnight?
JB: I was traveling with a business associate from Aspen to LA, and we had to change planes in Denver. There was a ticket mix up, so on the leg from Denver to LA we got separated. On that plane, I sat next to the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen (Lizzie). It was literally like God was shining a light on her! It was a classic love at first sight, and fortunately for us, we had to get off the plane because of a mechanical problem and, when we were exiting the plane, I went up to the person I was traveling with and said, “I’ll give you $100 to stay away from me ‘cause I just met the woman I’m going to marry.” Lizzie and I spent the next 5 hours in the Denver airport…and it felt like we had known each other our whole lives. When we landed in LA and exchanged information, it turned out that we lived 2 blocks away from each other on the same street in Brentwood! Lizzie called her parents and told them she just met the guy she was going to marry (even though she and I were dating other people at the time)! We got married a few months later in The Vatican and, needless to say, we’ve been together ever since with two beautiful children. Sometimes, God throws you a softball:)
OC: What is the hardest thing about interviewing famous people?
JB: I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve had to interview “famous people” my whole professional career. The one lesson that I learned early on is to treat everyone with the same amount of respect. That way, when you interact with someone who is “famous”, they can feel that you’re not changing your behavior. They (the “famous” people), just want to have real interactions and be treated like a normal human being.
OC: Who would be the number one dream guest for the The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus?
JB: Two dream guests would be President Obama and President Trump. They BOTH created a “Brink of Midnight” moment for our country and I’d love to hear their own personal stories regarding the moments that fundamentally changed the course of their lives.
OC: You’re an athlete yourself and have competed in many Ironman triathlons. Is there a science behind people who can do that type of extreme activity?
JB: Yes. They are very stubborn…in the best way possible:)
OC: Those triathlons took you all over the world, what was your favorite place to visit?
JB: I did my first Ironman in Taupo, New Zealand in 1998 and the experience was truly magical. The Ironman event wasn’t nearly as common and commercial as it is today, so there was this very pioneering feeling about the whole thing. The people in New Zealand were incredible and the scenery is among the most beautiful in the world!
OC: First thing you do when arriving at a hotel in your room?
JB: Throw my suitcase on the bed and race to the bathroom. It’s become pavlovian at this point: walk into hotel room, race to the bathroom. They go hand in hand.
OC: Complete the following sentence: I never leave home without:
JB: Being grateful for the incredible life Lizzie and I have been able to create together. I also never travel without my prayer book. My mother gave it to me when I was 7, and I’ve always packed it ever since!
John Brenkus, please use care upon departure as items may have shifted in The Overhead Compartment during our journey. Thanks for choosing us for your travel tips! Have a wonderful day!

These 10 U.S. Airports Challenge Pilots Most
Emergency crews investigate the wreckage of a Bombardier Challenger 600 that crashed in Aspen, Colorado in 2014. The approach at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is among the most challenging in the nation. Leigh Vogel / Associated Press/The Aspen Times
Skift Take: Some airports are more challenging than others, but the good news is that just about every U.S. airline, even the smallest ones, employ professional pilots capable of successfully navigating the trickiest approaches.
— Brian Sumers
For a commercial airline pilot, some landings are a relative breeze—think airports with long, clear runways on flat land at sea level, with benign weather and modest traffic.
We’re here to discuss the other kind.
The final approach and landing represent the most challenging aspects of a pilot’s workload and come with the most accidents. Consider airfields where congestion, geography, winds, altitude, and other factors can make the approach a bear. These airports can also test a pilot’s judgment and willingness to abort a landing and go around.
Honeywell Aerospace, a major aircraft avionics producer that’s part of Honeywell International Inc., compiled some of the most challenging U.S. venues. The list isn’t ranked by difficulty, but Aspen/Pitkin County is widely known to pose a massive workload for aviators and got a special nod from more than a dozen Honeywell pilots who were polled. Among others where the approach and landing can regularly be a hassle: Juneau, New York’s LaGuardia, Washington’s Reagan National, and San Diego airport.
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, Aspen, Colo.
Few airports challenge a pilot to the same headache-inducing degree as Aspen, playground for the rich and famous. The approach involves descending into a narrow space surrounded on two sides by mountains and frequent cloud cover. On top of that, the winds can shift rapidly and gust wickedly. The Aspen approach is “like shooting through a mine shaft” with little margin for error, one pilot told the Los Angeles Times in 2001.
In March 2001, 18 people died when their Gulfstream charter jet from Los Angeles, flying off course, crashed into terrain short of the runway. Investigators cited numerous pilot errors during the nighttime approach. A private jet pilot also was killed in January 2014 during a failed approach. In the winter ski season, pilots must keep close watch on the minimum approach conditions, as weather can deteriorate rapidly. Here’s a regional jet performing a “textbook” approach and landing in a winter snow.
Bert Mooney Airport, Butte, Mont.
This airport is largely surrounded by steep terrain, and it doesn’t have a control tower. Bert Mooney also has cold-weather restrictions, requiring operating adjustments when the temperature drops to -2 Fahrenheit. One other note to pilots: There are a lot of deer around.
Juneau International Airport, Juneau, Alaska
Surrounded by mountainous terrain, Juneau wins raves as a picturesque city but occasional jeers from pilots. The area also has an abundance of cloudy, drizzly weather, with low cloud ceilings. Here is a Microsoft Flight Simulator video of a typical approach into Juneau.
LaGuardia Airport, New York City
Ten miles east of Manhattan, LaGuardia sits beneath some of the world’s most congested airspace, with two major international hubs just a few miles southeast (John F. Kennedy) and southwest (Newark Liberty). It also has a high-density flow of traffic—roughly 17 hours per day—owing to its location as the closest of all three to Manhattan. If you’re flying into LaGuardia, grab a left-side window seat—that’s where to get the better look at the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan on approach. Grab a right hand seat in the summer time and you might get a way-too-close-for-comfort look at sunbathers on Queens rooftops just before touchdown.
Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport, Bullhead City, Ariz.
This west Arizona airport has mountains on three sides—north, east, and southeast—including what pilots call “terrain” on both ends of the 8,500-foot runway. As a result, departures require a steep rate of climb. Laughlin/Bullhead landed commercial service last month with a daily flight from Phoenix, so more pilots—and passengers—are holding on tight.
Mammoth Yosemite Airport, Mammoth Lakes, Calif.
Mammoth Yosemite lies in a box canyon hard east of several major peaks in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, including the namesake ski resort. In winter, the season that garners most of the commercial air service, inclement weather can present a perpetual challenge.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Arlington, Va.
The District of Columbia has plenty of restricted, heavily guarded airspace. Veer off course or ignore air traffic control near the Capitol and you’ll quickly find a fighter jet on your wing. These defenses also require some sharp 30-40-degree turns along the Potomac River when flying the “River Visual” approach to Reagan National Airport. (Passenger tip: Sit on the left for views of many of the major national monuments.)
San Diego International Airport, San Diego
Pilots report frequent gusty tailwinds that can require quick adjustments on approach. Arriving flights typically land to the west, which means passengers get a view of downtown office buildings and parking decks. Peer out the window when flying into the former Lindbergh Field—it’s a landing you won’t forget.
Telluride Regional Airport, Telluride, Colo.
At 9,070 feet, Telluride is the highest-elevation commercial airport in America. It also features 1,000-foot cliffs on both ends of the runway and strong vertical turbulence during winter months caused by the mountain winds. There are several videos of the approach into Telluride showing the sharp plateau on which the strip is perched. “Nothing you want to do tomorrow is worth risking your life and the lives of your passengers today!” the Telluride airport says in a notice to pilots.
Yellowstone Regional Airport, Cody, Wyo.
This airport has a few mountains in the vicinity but no control tower. It also requires pilots to perform what is called a nonprecision approach, a standard procedure for a pilot but one that doesn’t offer any vertical guidance, requiring the aviator to calculate the rate of descent.

We explain—plus give you a few quick tips on how to avoid the tourists and get affordable flights—in the video below:
Tumblr media
iStock.com/YakobchukOlena These tips won’t just save you money on vacation. They might bring down the cost of a trip just enough that you can safely afford it in the first place. Follow our experts’ advice, and you could balance the equation that allows for a truly restorative—and much-deserved—adventure. Read the full article
