if the only reason you're considering medical diagnosis or legal recognition of your disability is to feel less like a fraud, don't do it.
it's not worth the effort nor does it actually work.
i got my autism diagnosis so i could get PIP. i got registered sight impaired so i could get PIP as well as some other accommodations. i got my ADHD diagnosis because i wanted to try meds.
i got my PIP and the benefits. i found out i can't go on ADHD meds.
for a few months, a side effect of getting diagnosed/registered was feeling validated and more confident in these disabilities.
that did not last.
every now and then i still wonder if i'm making my autism sound worse than it is, if it's really autism at all, if i just accidentally lied to the assessor because i wanted to be autistic. same with my ADHD.
with my vision, my eye conditions are an undeniable, visible fact. and yet i still feel like i'm making myself out to be more disabled than i am. i still think "i can read normal print, large print is just more comfortable, so i'm not really that disabled". i still think "i actually can see lots of things around me, so i can't really be that disabled".
i still feel like a fraud for using large text, magnification, a symbol cane, stim toys, a sunflower lanyard, not reading physical books etc.
i still feel like a fraud despite having 30 pages of diagnostic paperwork and certificate of visual impairment in my drawer. especially with my vision because no other vision impaired person's vision seems to be like mine at all. i am alone.
so yeah, if the only reason you want to get diagnosed is for confidence in your disability, it's not worth it. the doubts will come back anyway.

We Saved Each Other (Part Eight)

Summary: you undergo an assessment for a learning disability and your mom helps you come to terms with the result
Word Count: 1.8k
Pairings: (Mom!Natasha x Kid!Reader) (Clint x Kid!Reader)
Warnings/content: Autism assessment/diagnosis (written from my personal experiences and research)
————
Today, a S.H.I.E.L.D professional is making their final assessment in wether or not you have a learning disability. Melissa had been following you for a few days now, watching your behaviour and assessing your ‘personality’. You were still a little confused as to why she was with you, Natasha had tried to explain but your little brain just couldn’t quite understand. Melissa had told you that it was important you just remained yourself and acted however you usually would, but you were a trained spy, you’d been taught to lie and manipulate, your little brain definitely knew that much. You had your guard up when you first met her but Natasha stayed with you the whole time and soon enough you were somewhat comfortable with Melissa. So far, Melissa had assessed you while playing with your toys and outside, she’d observed your interaction with the team and the Barton children and yesterday she had a meeting with Natasha to discuss your circumstances, something your mom found incredibly difficult. Usually an assessor would use any available documents to aid their diagnosis however there wasn’t much documentation on you. All you had were adoption papers and a birth certificate provided by Fury.
Today you were due to have a test with Melissa, and you were not happy about it all. “Sweetie I promise it’s nothing scary, it’s just to help you like we talked about remember?” Natasha said as she cradled you in her arms. You had hardly slept last night and now you were overtired and overstimulated “don’t wanna” you fussed “baby I know but this is so important, it means that mommy can take care of you properly and help you when you’re feeling different things, things that other people don’t feel” Nat cooed. “No!” You whined “it’s all gonna be okay y/n I promise” Natasha said “I just wanna be normal mommy” you cried. “Oh my sweet girl just because your brain works differently doesn’t mean you’re not normal, truth be told baby there is no such thing as normal” Natasha cooed “but why does my brain work different mommy?” You asked through your tears. “Y/n sometimes there aren’t any answers” Nat said softly “things just happen in our life’s and we can’t always explain why. I know this is scary but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing, if you do have a learning disorder that doesn’t make you any less amazing, I promise” she said as she gently brushed her fingers through your hair. “So do you think you can be a brave girl and see Melissa for your test?” Your mom asked. You wiped away your fallen tears as you sat up to look at Natasha “yes mommy, I think so” you whimpered.
You met with Melissa at the agreed time, Natasha glued by your side. Your mom knew you would have to go in alone with Melissa but she wanted you to know that you were safe. “Shall we get started y/n?” Melissa asked, you shook your head and hurried your face into Natasha’s hip. “Come on sweetie you can do it” your mom said as she crouched down to be eye level with you “you remember what we talked about? I know you’re nervous but I promise it’s all gonna be ok” Natasha cooed, urging you to follow Melissa through the open door. “M’kay” you muffled as you sceptically stepped towards the room. “Why don’t we get a snack first y/n?” Melissa asked, trying to calm your nerves “I’ve got some fruit roll ups, you like those don’t you?” She said. “Yes please” you said, taking a seat at the small table. Natasha took a deep breath when the door was closed, she wanted nothing more than to hold your hand through this but she knew you had to be assessed without her in order to get a correct diagnosis. Your mom had agreed with Melissa that she would be able to monitor you over the security footage, given your past Melissa understood why Natasha was scared to let you out of her side. The redhead had informed the assessor of your upbringing and as a S.H.I.E.L.D member she was permitted to have limited knowledge of the red room.
Natasha had asked Pepper to cook your favourite meal while she watched the security cameras, wanting you to have a comfort meal after your stressful day. You seemed reserved in yourself in the meeting but answered all of Melissa’s as best you could. She was great at distracting you and keeping you entertained as to not overwhelm you. The hour went by smoothly as Natasha was waiting with open arms when you came out of the room “hey baby girl, oh I’m so proud of you” she said as she scooped you up onto her hip. “She did so well Natasha” Melissa smiled “I’ll go over all the information I’ve collected today and I should have a confirmed diagnosis for you in a few days” she said. “Thank you Melissa” Natasha said. You waved goodbye to the assessor and cuddled closely into your mom “my brave little spider” she cooed “do you wanna have some dinner, Pepper’s made your favourite” Nat said. “Waffle fries?” You quietly asked “waffle fries indeed baby” your mom said as she headed towards the kitchen.
~~~~~
Natasha waited patiently over the next few days, checking her phone every few minutes in hopes of the call. She hid her anxiety from you through the sleepless nights that you had failed to settle. You had been much more secluded since your test, only wanting to be with your mommy. It took a couple of days to bring our your bubbly personality again and even then Natasha knew that you weren’t quite yourself. You were currently playing with your cousins in the common room, the Barton’s had come for a visit after Lila demanded she needed to see you and her auntie Nat. You and your mom had been staying at S.H.I.E.L.D HQ while you waited for your assessment results.
“Natasha?” Maria called around the door, entering the room “Melissa’s here” she said. Nat felt the anxiety rise in her chest as she rose to her feet “Clint could you watch y/n for me?” She asked “of course” he said. “Sweetie I’ll be back in a few minutes okay” Natasha said to you “ok mommy” you replied unfazed and happily continuing your drawing. Your mom met Melissa in a private meeting room to discuss your assessment. “Uncle Clint” you said as you climbed into his lap “yes little bug?” he asked. “Is Melissa here to talk with mommy about me?” You innocently asked. “Well yes she is” Clint explained “but not in a bad way, she’s here to help you remember? Are you nervous?” Your uncle asked, you nodded shyly as you leaned into Clint. “That’s okay bug” Clint cooed holding you tightly.
You stayed cuddled with Clint until Natasha came back into the room “hey sweetie, do you wanna go and get some strawberry juice?” She asked as she scooped you up into her arms. “Yes please” you politely said. Nat carried you through the hallway towards the kitchen where she prepared your strawberry juice in your specific strawberry juice bottle. It was imperative that your drinks and snacks where placed in the corrected cups and bowls, otherwise you would never eat or drink it. “Thank you mama” you said before taking a sip of your juice “you’re welcome baby” Natasha said “listen y/n, mommy needs to talk to you about your assessment okay? Do you think we could go and sit and talk?” Your mom asked. “Did I do bad in the test mommy?” You frowned “no baby girl of course not it’s just Melissa came to give me the results today so I wanted to tell you about it” Natasha cooed as she gently brushed your hair away from your face. “M’kay” you mumbled behind your juice bottle.
“Alright detka” Natasha said as she sat down on the bed with you “so do you understand why Melissa came to see us?” She asked. “I think so” you said “well she came to see if you might have a learning disability, which means that sometimes things can feel different for you. You remember when we talked about it?” Nat said, you nodded intensely remembering the conversation with your mom. “So Melissa found out that you have something called autism” Natasha said, cutting to the chase “it’s a type of learning disorder that means people can struggle to communicate and learn the same way as other people” your mom explained as best she could to your small brain “you know how sometimes you get upset at loud noises and bright lights?” She asked, you nodded along “well that’s because you’re autistic” Nat said. “Is that bad mommy? Do I need to be fixed?” You sadly asked.
Natasha’s heart broke, years of your father and then Dreykov’s words had convinced your small brain that you were a problem that needed to fixed. “No baby it’s not a bad thing at all” your mom said as she softly ran her fingers along the bridge of your nose. “There is nothing wrong with you y/n, you don’t need to be fixed because you are perfect just as you are. Having autism doesn’t make you any less perfect but it does mean that somethings might be a little more difficult. But y/n I promise you it’ll be okay, we’ll figure out what you need and mommy will be here for you always” Natasha said. “What will help me mama?” You asked “well we can get you some special toys to keep you calm when you feel nervous or anxious and we can make you a little safe space at home with no noises and keep it nice and dark. Everyone who has autism will struggle with different things so we’ll have to find out along the way what you need” Nat explained.
You looked up at the redhead, admiring her bright green eyes “are you still gonna be my mommy? Even though I have autism” you mumbled sadly. “Oh baby of course!” Natasha beamed as she picked you up and placed you in her lap “I’m always gonna be your mommy, no matter what, I love you so much y/n” she cooed “I love you too mama” you smiled. Natasha tightened her grip around your small frame and you tucked your face into her neck. You were still a bit unsure about what was going on but you knew that no matter what Natasha was going to be there. The road ahead was a long one and there were so many unknown things approaching but now you had an entire family behind you. Clint, Laura, Maria, Lila, Cooper and of course your mommy. There was a time you had no one and nothing but now you had everything you had ever dreamed of. Autism or no autism, you were going to be okay.
How does Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) provide a cost-effective solution over traditional educational pathways?
Are you thinking about levelling up your career with formal qualifications? If time or financial constraints are holding you back from traditional education, exploring Recognition of Prior Learning could be the solution. Let’s get to know more about RPL & traditional study-
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning is a process that evaluates your existing skills, knowledge, and experience. It assesses the individual through formal, informal, or non-formal learning. By doing this it determine if you meet the requirements for the qualification you are looking for.
If you possess the relevant skills and knowledge and can provide evidence of these competencies, you may be eligible for RPL. It will increase your chances of getting the job. It also highlights Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the individual.
How Does RPL Work?
Though it follows several steps, these are:
1.    Initial Consultation:
The journey starts with STUDYIN about your career goals. Through initial consultation, you will learn which qualification matches your goals.
2.    Free Skill Assessment:
Skill Assessment will evaluate your formal-informal learning, experience, volunteering and many more. This process will help you to understand the eligibility of RPL & connect with your current skills for future qualification.
3.    Portfolio of Work Experience:
Our consultant will guide you in creating a portfolio, which may include work samples, references, certifications, etc. To make it easier, STUDYIN will provide a checklist to help you gather all evidence of your skills & experience.
4.    Evidence Review by RTO:
Our partner RTOs (Registered Training Organizations) will assess your portfolio. They will make sure that your skills & experience meet the units of qualification. Also, if there is any gap in evidence, the assessor may require additional proof or training requirements.
5.    Certification Attained:
After meeting all the criteria, STUDYIN’s RTO partner will issue your certificate. Though it is the same certificate that students receive via traditional classroom, you’re going to acquire it through your proven experience.
Traditional Study
The traditional study continues to shape the academic scenario. However, it requires you to attend classes, follow a structured curriculum by the institution, complete assignments, prepare for exams, spend a notable amount of money and so on. Who wants to take that much hassle to get the formal qualification if you can get it in a smart way?
In simple words, RPL is more cost-effective than traditional study. In this article, we will learn how Recognition of Prior Learning beats traditional methods.
How RPL Beats Traditional Methods
·     Time is money
One of the biggest advantages of RPL is that it doesn’t require so much time. You don’t have to attend classes physically, whereas, with the traditional study method, it’s the fundamental requirement to attend classes either online or offline. In traditional paths, learners have to cover materials they may already be proficient in. However, recognition of prior learning also saves you time and recognises existing skills. Also,
·      Don’t have to start from square one
Traditional study methods typically involve starting at the beginning of the program, where it takes longer the duration of study but also incurs additional costs associated with tuition fees, course payment, course materials & so on. Although RPL recognise learners to capitalise on their existing knowledge & skills
·     Cost Saving
The traditional study method requires spending money on certain field courses where you already have knowledge or skills in that particular field. It increases the cost; on the other hand, RPL do value your existing knowledge & skills, and you don’t have to take courses from the beginning.
·     Support for Lifelong Learning
In the traditional method, there’s a very rare opportunity for lifelong learning. On the other hand, RPL supports a culture of lifelong learning by encouraging individuals to update and expand their skills continuously throughout their careers. It also shows the importance of ongoing personal & professional development.
·     Maximizing Return on Investment
However, RPL translates into a higher return on investment than the traditional study method. It is a process where it recognises existing experience & skills. Thus, Recognition of Prior Learning minimises the financial barriers to education and maximises the value of its educational investment.
RPL VS Traditional Study
Today, everything evolves constantly. Traditional study is no longer the only option; with the right strategy, the recognition of skills can be beneficial as well. The traditional study follows a structured curriculum in academics, whereas RPL acknowledges your existing skills & experience to formal qualifications. Eventually, the choice depends on the individual's preferences.
If RPL is the smartest way to get the qualification done, then do we need to do it alone? The answer is no; going through the entire Prior Learning Assessment process by yourself is quite stressful, and getting help from professionals such as STUDYIN will ease your journey.
Lastly, Recognition of Prior Learning is not a quick ticket to a qualification in a few weeks. It’s an extensive recognition of your experience & skills earned through your distinctive journey. Also, it's effective in maintaining the integrity and quality of education.
Are you considering RPL as a pathway to earning your qualification? Take the first step to your journey by checking your eligibility today with a 40-second skill check.
Lead Recertification: Ensuring Safe and Sustainable Practices
Why Lead Recertification is Important
Lead is a toxic metal that, when ingested or inhaled, can lead to severe health issues, including neurological damage, developmental delays in children, kidney damage, and in extreme cases, death. The risks associated with lead exposure are especially high for children, pregnant women, and workers in industries that handle lead-containing materials. Given the long-term effects of lead poisoning, strict measures have been put in place to mitigate exposure.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States has implemented the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule, which requires professionals working in environments where lead-based paint or materials are present to be certified. This certification ensures that they are trained in lead-safe work practices and understand how to handle, contain, and dispose of lead-based materials safely. Lead recertification is necessary to keep professionals updated on the latest safety protocols, regulatory changes, and technological advancements.
Who Needs Lead Recertification?
Lead certification and recertification are essential for contractors, renovators, painters, and other professionals who work on buildings constructed before 1978, the year when the use of lead-based paint was banned in the U.S. Additionally, those working in industrial settings involving lead products, such as battery manufacturing or recycling plants, must undergo lead certification to ensure they follow proper safety procedures.
Recertification is also required for risk assessors and inspectors involved in identifying lead hazards. Property owners, managers, and landlords of older buildings are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the certification requirements to ensure any lead-related renovations are conducted safely.
The Lead Recertification Process
Recertification for lead-safe work practices must occur every five years, or every three years for certified renovators working in states where the EPA has authorized their own programs. This process typically involves a refresher course that reviews key safety practices, any updates to the lead-related regulations, and the latest techniques for safely managing lead-based materials.
The recertification process can be completed online or in person, depending on the type of certification. Many training programs offer the option of an online refresher course, which is convenient and time-efficient for professionals who are renewing their certification. However, some professionals may prefer or be required to complete in-person training, Lead Safe Certified especially if they need hands-on experience with the latest lead-safe equipment or containment techniques.
Benefits of Lead Recertification
Health and Safety: Recertification ensures that workers are up-to-date on the safest practices for handling lead, significantly reducing the risk of lead exposure and its associated health hazards. This benefits not only the workers themselves but also the occupants of the buildings in which they are working.
Regulatory Compliance: Staying compliant with EPA or local regulations is critical for avoiding legal penalties. Lead recertification guarantees that professionals are following current guidelines, which helps businesses avoid fines or the risk of being shut down due to non-compliance.
Professional Credibility: Maintaining an up-to-date lead certification demonstrates a commitment to professionalism and safety, enhancing the reputation of contractors and businesses in the industry. Customers and clients are more likely to trust certified professionals with their renovation or repair needs.
Environmental Responsibility: Lead recertification emphasizes the importance of proper disposal and containment practices, helping to prevent environmental contamination. Certified professionals learn how to minimize the release of lead dust and debris into the environment, contributing to sustainability efforts.
