Essay by author Megan Abbott and an excerpt from film scholar Marek Haltof’s 1996 book Peter Weir: When Cultures Collide
This sensual and striking chronicle of a disappearance and its aftermath put director Peter Weir on the map and helped usher in a new era of Australian cinema. Based on an acclaimed 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, Picnic at Hanging Rock is set at the turn of the twentieth century and concerns a small group of students from an all-female college who vanish, along with a chaperone, while on a St. Valentine’s Day outing. Less a mystery than a journey into the mystic, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society, Weir’s gorgeous, disquieting film is a work of poetic horror whose secrets haunt viewers to this day.

American Matt Quigley answers Australian land baron Elliott Marston’s ad for a sharpshooter to kill the dingoes on his property. But when Quigley finds out that Marston’s real target is the aborigines, Quigley hits the road. Quigley Down Under is directed by Simon Wincer and written by John Hill. It stars Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo and Alan Rickman. Music is by Basil Poledouris and cinematography by David Eggby. Plot sees Selleck as Matthew Quigley, a Wyoming cowboy and sharp shooting rifleman who answers an advertisement to go to Western Australia as a hired sharp shooter. If proving his worth, he’s to work for Elliot Marston (Rickman), but when Marston outlines his sick reasons for hiring Quigley, the pair quickly become on a collision course that can only see one of them survive. It was written in the 1970s by John Hill, where it was hoped that Steve McQueen would take on the lead role, but with McQueen falling ill and Clint Eastwood allegedly passed over, the project sat on ice until 1990. In came Selleck and the film finally got made. Just about making back its money at the box office, Wincer’s movie deserved far better than that. It’s competition in the Western stakes in 1990 were Costner’s beautiful and elegiac Dances With Wolves and the Brat Pack bravado of Young Guns II, both vastly different films from each other, and both considerably different from Quigley Down Under. If those two films contributed to the average response to the Selleck picture? I’m not completely sure, but viewing it now one tends to think that the 1990 audience just wasn’t ready for such a delightfully old fashioned Oater, one that features a straight and simple narrative to tell its tale. It’s safe to say that anyone after deep psychological aspects will not get that here. There’s some serious themes in the story, such as the horrid genocide towards Aborigines, while the deft kicks at the British are fair enough even to a British guy such as myself. But in the main this is old time Western fare, ...

But Tara Judah doesn’t stop there: by cutting and pasting snippets from various sources (from interviews with the director to the writings of Levinas), she assembles a short opinion on The Nightingale that is distinctly her own.
#The nightingale movie movie#
The desktop video format is the perfect fit for this kind of online discourse analysis, as it visualizes how a certain take on a movie can quickly proliferate and come to dominate the discussion of that film. We literally watch her (and/or her editor Peter Walsh) google her way through the online coverage of the movie. Judah chooses the format of the desktop documentary to examine the critical response to The Nightingale. The video essay in particular is very interesting. Both that text and video were posted online by Watershed (a film culture and digital media centre in Bristol, UK, which screened Kent’s film in November 2019). “It’s the film’s reception that should be viewed as controversial, not the film itself” – that is the starting point for her article and video essay on the movie. Those extreme reactions then became the focal point of much of the subsequent media coverage of the movie.īut that controversy, writes freelance film critic and cinema producer Tara Judah, is misplaced. The Nightingale brewed up a bit of a storm at several film festivals where it was presented – from walkouts to angry shouting. The period drama centers on a particularly violent episode in Australian history and takes as its protagonist a female convict who has to endure horrific violence herself. Retrieved April 27, 2021.Jennifer Kent’s 2019 feature film The Nightingale was not met with the same near unanimous critical acclaim as her 2014 effort The Babadook.

Universal truths in boy's own adventure
Tumblr media
By MICHAEL BODEY THE AUSTRALIAN 12:00AM AUGUST 25, 2010
TAIKA Waititi is still pinching himself at the success of his second film, Boy.
He concedes New Zealand films don't do as well on their home turf "as, I imagine, many Australian films don't do crazily well".
Boy doesn't exactly scream "hit", being a coming-of-age story set in 1984 on NZ's rural east coast and starring an unknown 11-year-old.
But Waititi's film is the highest grossing local film in NZ history. Its box-office take to date of $NZ9.3 million ($7.4m) surpasses Once were Warriors and The World's Fastest Indian, both of which earned more than $NZ7m.
"In my head I thought around $NZ2m would be nice, twice what my last film [Eagle vs Shark] made, and it's just kept going and going," Waititi notes.
"The feedback and response by local audiences is something none of us really expected."
Boy has been a success because New Zealanders want to see themselves on screen, but its tone is more tragicomic, self-deprecating and relaxed than audiences are used to. It focuses on universal themes of family and the insecurity, clumsiness and wonder of growing up.
James Rolleston is the Boy, a Michael Jackson-obsessed kid living on a farm with his Gran. He idolises his father, Alamein (played by Waititi), a man he imagines is a deep-sea diver, a war hero and a relative of Jackson.
The reality is underwhelming: his itinerant and unreliable dad has been "in the can" for robbery and is little more than a rebel biker without a cause.
"Anyone who has a parent can relate to this idea of not quite understanding who your parents are or making up stories about them," Waititi says.
"Then there are the realities of who they are and their secrets and [realising] they're not superhuman human beings."
Global audiences understand the film, he adds, even if some are surprised to discover it's not a family movie. A Hawaiian festival director programmed the film before seeing it. "Halfway through he asked me, 'Just out of curiosity, is there much more swearing or violence?' "
Australians will find Boy sweet, raucous and lovably NZ, with its recognisable cultural references, language and intonations. It won the audience awards at the Sydney Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival this year.
The film upends certain cliches about NZ cinema globally, although Waititi is still smarting from one US review, in trade newspaper Variety, that accused it of misrepresenting Maori culture.
"[The reviewer] almost took it personally that there weren't ghosts and people in villages riding whales," Waititi says.
Waititi played against local expectations, too, after winning an Academy Award nomination for the short film Two Cars, One Night. "Essentially that was a dramatic short and people assumed after that I would go down the drama road and make typical New Zealand films, dark films about kids who die," he says.
"So I ended up moving away from that and trying to inject some quirkiness and comedy. Maori get pigeonholed into the idea they're spiritual and telling stories like Whale Rider and Once were Warriors, quite serious stuff, but we're pretty funny people and we never really have had an opportunity to show that side of ourselves, the clumsy, nerdy side of ourselves, which is something I am."
Waititi is something more than clumsy and nerdy. The 35-year-old has a background in painting and photography, having exhibited in Wellington and Berlin. His acting and comedy emerged on the side, as he performed with mates including Flight of the Conchords's Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, directed episodes of their US series and gave popular stand-up comedy shows. The semi-autobiographical Boy was the first, tentative screenplay he wrote as he mulled the prospect of being able to move from shorts to feature films.
"I kind of freaked out a bit, I didn't want to leap into it because the transition between short films and feature films is the same as short stories and novels," Waititi explains. "Some people just can't write a novel and some people can't make a feature film, it's just the way it is sometimes. Maybe I couldn't have made a feature film."
Now that one's settled, Waititi is in the enviable position of being able to juggle directing and acting. He has just finished filming a performance in the big-budget studio superhero film, Green Lantern, and expects a sequel to follow.
"Yeah, for my film work I'm in a good position in New Zealand. I could probably make my next film pretty easily," he says with honest understatement. "You're always fine until you stumble and then obviously it becomes harder. The acting thing crept up. I'm not sure how much attention I'll give it.
"I'm lucky my main job now is filmmaking, so it's not like I'm rushing off to LA to do all these auditions and desperately trying to be an actor.
"I think I'm a better filmmaker than actor, so I already know that. That's OK, I can handle not being a famous actor."
He remains unsure whether he can sustain himself as a filmmaker in NZ, even though he doesn't appear particularly rushed to take up any international offers.
He believes he can remain in NZ "if you don't expect what we all thought was the high life of a film director in the 90s when people were being paid squillions of dollars just to do anything".
The money in filmmaking has dried up; today it really is just like any other job.
"The glitz and glamour has gone and you get paid a normal wage to do a job that isn't extraordinary," he says. "So it's kind of fair. I think people were overpaid for what the job is, having fun and telling stories and getting all this cool stuff."
Waititi appreciates that the films he wants to make won't generate the fortune of blockbusters such as Green Lantern, but he doesn't want dedicate two years of his life to a project he's not passionate about.
"The stuff I'm passionate about is what I write, it isn't multi-million-dollar franchise movies," he says.
But with the success of Boy, could there be pressure to create a sequel or franchise out of its characters? Waititi looks across to Rolleston and raises an eyebrow.
"Maybe I'll just make this into a franchise, do the Truffaut thing and just keep hiring him until he's 40."
Boy is in cinemas tomorrow. SBS One screens Eagle vs Shark on Saturday.

Best War Movies to Watch: A Complete Streaming Guide
https://ift.tt/32Bbpxh
Sadly, the human race has pretty much never not been at war. We remain an ever violent, combative crew. Hopefully one day that’ll change and we’ll enter an era of unprecedented peace. Until then though, we have the movies!
War might be hell, but war flicks can be pretty great at times! Armed combat and all the other various theaters and forms of battle makes for high-octane drama and gripping backdrops. And that’s pretty much exactly what we are looking for out of our drama films.
What follows is a (mostly) comprehensive list of all the war movies available with a streaming subscription on the major streaming services. If you’re interested in paying per movie, options like Amazon, Google Play and YouTube should help broaden the field. Otherwise, scroll below because the films here are all free with a log-in subscription to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, or HBO Max.
‘71
Available on: Hulu (US), Amazon Prime Video (UK)
An underrated British thriller from the last decade, ’71 turns “the Troubles” in Ireland into a pseudo-horror movie. At a mere 99 minutes, this is lean, economical filmmaking with a barebones premise about a British solider (Jack O’Connell) who gets separated from his unit during a Belfast riot in 1971—the height of British-Irish tension. His plight to survive the night is riveting filmmaking and a grim look back to still fresh nightmares.
The African Queen
Available on: Amazon Prime Video (purchase only in UK)
An unlikely war movie at first glance, The African Queen is very much the story of two middle-aged people caught up in the chaos of the First World War. It’s also a crackling adventure yarn about autumn romance between a drunken river boat captain (Humphrey Bogart) and a Christian missionary (Katharine Hepburn) who’s brother was just killed by Germans in colonial Africa. Both set out to get down the river, and away from the Germans’ reach, in this charming John Huston classic with still stunning location photography.
The Alamo
Available on: Hulu
As an ironically little remembered version of the Alamo siege from director John Lee Hancock, The Alamo (2004) is still the best film version of these events. With a refreshing eye for historical authenticity instead of Texan mythmaking, the movie unpacks the lives of David Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), James Bowie (Jason Patric), and William Travis (Patrick Wilson) with a warts and all approach. It also relays the events of the battle in its actual context at night, and in grim chaos, and gives needed attention to the overlooked contributions of the Tejanos to Texan independence.

But most significantly, it has a bittersweet soul as expressed in Carter Burwell’s score, which is at its most beautiful when Crockett climbs a parapet to serenade both sides of the battlefield with his fiddle.
A Bridge Too Far
Available on: Netflix (US Only)
The last of its kind, A Bridge Too Far is one of those old-fashioned all-star war epics about World War II that came into vogue between the 1950s and ‘70s. But this nearly all-British production is not about one of the Allies’ greatest triumphs, but rather one of their most disappointing defeats: the failure of Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands.
Director Richard Attenborough and screenwriter William Goldman try to squeeze it all in, which will honestly be exhausting to some viewers. For others, seeing a historically accurate (if too lighthearted) rendering of this battle with the likes of Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Ryan O’Neal, Robert Redford, and more will be enough.
Casablanca
Available on: HBO Max
Another Bogie movie where the war is adjacent to the central conflict, Casablanca is the best wartime melodrama ever produced. Some even consider it the greatest American movie for that matter. Actually made during the Second World War, there is a great rush of patriotic idealism and anxious uncertainty about its vision of a seedy Moroccan city that is ostensibly under free French rule, but is not-so-secretly being occupied by the Nazis. There everyone goes to Rick’s, a café run by a disillusioned American (Bogart) who sticks his neck out for nobody.

But Rick must soon pick up the fight again after an old flame named Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) walks into his gin joint, bringing with her a French husband, a freedom fighter who has the Nazis breathing down his neck. All three are going to make some tough choices, as will complicit French police officer Louis (a marvelous Claud Rains) as the forces of World War II finally start pulling.
Cold Mountain
Available on: HBO Max
An attempt at an old fashioned sweeping wartime epic, Cold Mountain still brings modern historical insight to the oft-mythologized Civil War. The film is about several people from North Carolina’s Appalachian region. Like many Confederate soldiers, particularly from NC, Inman (Jude Law) has no slaves and no real reason to fight for the Southern cause. So after hellish battle, he deserts and attempts to make a sprawling trek back home.
Elsewhere, however, his sweetheart Ada (Nicole Kidman) must make hard decisions of her own with the leering eye of the Home Guard peeking over her shoulder, especially as word of Inman’s desertion reaches the mountains. An odyssey of the Civil War from the vantage of the impoverished it rolled over, Cold Mountain is a refreshing melodrama.
Da 5 Bloods
Available on: Netflix
Spike Lee’s latest joint is also one that opened up wounds from the Vietnam War that never really healed. Set more in the 2010s than 1960s, Da 5 Bloods follows four Black veterans who’ve ostensibly returned to Vietnam to find the remains of their fallen brother (Chadwick Boseman in one of his final roles). But they’re also here to reclaim gold that was stolen back in ’69.
Something of a heist movie, Lee mixes genres yet never loses sight about the anguish of those who fought in a war, and the legacy it leaves even decades and generations later.
The Dirty Dozen
Available on: HBO Max
Even if you haven’t seen Robert Aldrich’s epic 1967 adventure, the term “dirty dozen” and the basic premise of the movie have found their way into popular culture over the decades and influenced recent movies like Suicide Squad.
A grizzled (as if there’s any other kind) Lee Marvin leads a team of prisoners–including Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, George Kennedy, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland and more–on a suicide mission during World War II, with full pardons as their reward if they survive. The results are explosive and, at the time of release, controversially violent. They also make for one of the great war movies of the era.
Enemy at the Gates
Available on: Netflix, Amazon (US Only)
Sniper versus sniper; eagle versus eagle. That is the basic appeal of Enemy at the Gates, the rare Hollywood World War II drama where America is not even present. Rather this is a film about the war of attrition between the German and Russian forces at the Battle of Stalingrad, the nightmarish conflict which began turning the tide against the Third Reich. The movie features an all-star cast, including Jude Law, Ed Harris, Rachel Weisz, and Bob Hoskins, but it’s the chilly environs of hell on earth which make this worthwhile.
Five Came Back
Available on: Netflix
A film told in three parts, Five Came Back tracks the singular, and now fairly astonishing, choices made by five A-list Hollywood directors: John Ford, Frank Capra, George Stevens, John Huston, and William Wyler. They all chose to leave Hollywood either at the peak of their careers, or at the beginning of it, to make films about the Second World War. Each ultimately served as an officer, and several were in the actual thick of combat to capture war footage (and propaganda) for the first time in history. It was a patriotic and revealing choice then and now, and it’s examined with insight by the likes of Mark Harris and Steven Spielberg here.
Flags of Our Fathers
Available on: HBO Max
Not as good as director Clint Eastwood’s companion film told from the Japanese perspective, Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of Our Fathers is nonetheless a worthwhile film. A rather skeptical look at the lives of American marines who were turned into an inaccurate legend by the U.S. military when they were photographed raising the American flag above the sands of Iwo Jima, the picture tracks the home lives of soldiers who did their job only too well and were then asked to return home as glorified heroes… and then live an ordinary American life.
The Four Feathers
Available on: HBO Max
One of the great British adventure films of the pre-war era, The Four Feathers is director Zoltan Korda’s sweeping reimagining of the A.E.W. Mason novel. Set during Britain’s colonial wars in Egypt and Sudan during 1882, the film tracks an English officer who only took a commission in the military to honor his family’s ancient war record. However, when the call of war comes, he fears he would not do his duty in battle and resigns his service… so his three friends and even a fiancée give him four white feathers: white for cowardice.

To redeem himself, he travels to Sudan and helps the British cause while posing as a local. Filmed on actual African locations and in glorious Technicolor at a time when American movies were afraid to leave California, The Four Feathers is a classic (and politically incorrect) throwback.
Gallipoli
Available on: Amazon
Australian filmmaker Peter Weir has directed just 13 films, but probably 10 of them are classics, and this 1981 drama is one of them. A 25-year-old Mel Gibson stars as one of several young men who enlist in the Australian Army during the First World War. They eventually find themselves on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, site of a costly and lengthy battle that ended in defeat, but marked a turning point for Australia’s perception of itself and its place in the world and a seemingly disinterested British Empire. It’s a harrowing tale about the loss of innocence, national character, and the price of war for both.
Glory
Available on: Netflix (US Only)
Arguably the greatest film ever made about the American Civil War, Edward Zwick’s Glory continues to shine like one gallant rush. Based on the lives of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry regiment, the film tracks the hard fight for respect—and freedom—endured by the first African American regiment in U.S. history.

With a still crackling ensemble that includes Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, Andre Braugher, and Denzel Washington in his first Oscar winning role, the movie both mythologizes and humanizes the 54th’s struggle as the American struggle. It also soars with James Horner’s most transcendent and ethereal musical score.
The Great Dictator
Available on: HBO Max
The rare comedy on this list, The Great Dictator was a film of political courage by writer-director-producer-and-star Charlie Chaplin. Filmed in 1940 when much of the world was already at war, but the United States was not, this Hollywood film made a farce out of the hatred and fascism of the Third Reich, with Adolf Hitler being especially skewered.

Inglourious Basterds and the Immortality of Revenge Cinema

In the film, Chaplin plays both a fictional barber and Hitler-like dictator who switch places in a Prince and the Pauper styled mix-up. Chaplin thus makes a still hilarious deconstruction of Hitler’s madness and insecurities at a time when most Hollywood studios chose to pretend there wasn’t a war going on. The film also concludes in one of the greatest anti-war speeches in cinema history.
Hacksaw Ridge
Available on: HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video UK
The rare film that is told in merely two acts, director Mel Gibson’s World War II drama is fairly underrated. The film follows the remarkable true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), an unlikely U.S. Army corporal since he was also a conscientious objector who refused to hold a gun. Nearly court-martialed for his defiance of orders, as a medic Doss insisted he could serve his country well by saving lives on the battlefield. He got his chance at the Battle of Okinawa when he pulled 75 lives out of the carnage, which is captured in grisly detail by Gibson. Likely the bloodiest WWII movie since Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge is also one of the best.
Hamburger Hill
Available on: Amazon Prime Video (US Only)
This 1987 film set during the Vietnam War recounts one specific mission: a 1969 assault by the U.S. Army’s 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, known as the “Screaming Eagles,” on a well-fortified North Vietnamese position near the Laotian border. Dylan McDermott, Don Cheadle, Courtney B. Vance, and Steven Weber all make early career appearances in the film as young soldiers thrust into a situation where victory almost seems more like defeat—as good a metaphor for the Vietnam conflict as any.
Hostiles
Available on: Netflix
Director Scott Cooper did the rare thing with Hostiles: He looked back at American history with nuance and sincere contemplation. This film is ostensibly about a U.S. Cavalry officer on his final mission, which is to escort a family of Native Americans across the last remnants of American frontier. But when that officer (Christian Bale) knows he’s escorting the dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) who led the doomed side of American Indians in previous conflicts—and alongside a woman (Rosamund Pike) who just lost her family to Indian attacks—the ghosts of America’s sins and recriminations walk with them.
The Hurt Locker
Available on: Hulu, Netflix UK
The film which won Kathryn Bigelow the Oscar for Best Director, The Hurt Locker is the first great movie about the War on Terror in the 21st century. Boiling down the madness of war to being like “a drug” for some soldiers, the film essays the high-stake tension—and adrenaline—of being an officer in the Army’s bomb squad who is responsible for disarming IEDs, bomb vests, and other hidden weapons of death.
It’s terrifying… and exhilarating as personified by Jeremy Renner’s addicted Staff Sgt. William James. Also with a career-making performance by Anthony Mackie and a pseudo-journalistic script by Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker gets under your skin.
Platoon
Available on: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video (US Only)
There were plenty of Vietnam War movies before Oliver Stone’s Platoon, but what shook audiences in 1986 is that this was the first time one was made by a Vietnam veteran. Not that Stone didn’t take liberties: He makes his soldier’s eye view of the generation-defining conflict a fever dream of America’s darkest moments in the shit.

But his lament for the soldier also brought a renewed sense of sorrow and regret to how veterans were treated in the aftermath. With a heartbreaking supporting performance by Willem Dafoe, whose demise in the film has become iconic, there’s a reason for many this remains the only Vietnam War movie of consequence.
Red Tails
Available on: HBO Max
Here is executive producer George Lucas and director Anthony Hemingway’s well-meaning but so-so aerial war epic about the Tuskegee Airmen. The real-life Black pilots, mechanics, bombardiers, and more made up a segregated flank of African American airmen (as well as flyers from Haiti, Trinidad, and other Caribbean nations) in World War II. This film attempts to honor them with a cast that includes Terrence Howard, David Oyelowo, Nate Parker, and Cuba Gooding Jr.
War Machine
Available on: Netflix
David Michod (Animal Kingdom) wrote and directed this Netflix satire set during the ongoing war in Afghanistan, eight years after the 9/11 attacks. Brad Pitt stars as four-star general Glen McMahon (loosely based on real-life general Stanley McChrystal), whose bleak assessment of the situation on the ground puts him at odds with President Obama and others. Like other less-than-reverent films before it, War Machine is interested in the sheer insanity of war: doing the same thing over and over again while hoping for a different outcome.

BUSH CHRISTMAS (Dir: Ralph Smart, 1947).
Set during the Christmas holidays in the small valley community of Mara Mara, Bush Christmas follows the adventures of five children: brothers John (Morris Unicomb) and Snow (Nicky Yardley), their big sister Helen (Helen Grieve), English evacuee Michael (Michael Yardley) and friend Nesa (Nesa Saunders). After some horses are stolen from their ranch home, the kids decide to take the law into their own hands and set out into the Australian bush in order to track down the thieves and rescue the precious animals.
Bush Christmas was one of the first feature films from Rank Organisation's Children's Entertainment Film unit; a department which would eventually evolve into the Children's Film Foundation (CFF).
Although low budget, it feels significantly more polished than the usual, appealingly amateur, CFF output. Director Ralph Smart keeps the action moving at a steady pace while cinematographer George Heath captures the locations beautifully. Filmed in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, the location photography is a definite plus and lends an atmosphere unique in family movies of the era.
Chips Rafferty, then Australia's biggest homegrown movie star, hams it up nicely as Long Bill, the leader of the horse thieves. John Fernside and Stan Tolhurst are his cohorts, alternating some broad comedy with the required menace, as they are outwitted every step of the way by the kids.
Performances from the youngsters, none of whom had significant acting careers as adults, are appealing and natural. Nesa, the only indigenous lad, is slightly stereotyped, perhaps to be expected considering the era in which the movie was made. However, I feel the stereotyping is more naive than negative; with his knowledge of bush crafts he is shown to be the most intelligent and resourceful of the gang.
Set during the Australian summer, Bush Christmas is not especially festive for western audiences and is suitable viewing all year round. It is a modest little movie, but an engaging one at that. Perhaps a mite dated, but with enough comedy and action as to make it a worthwhile watch, especially for those looking for an alternative to modern family fare.

Anton Corbijn – Photographer
Background
Anton Corbijn is a famous Dutch photographer, mainly known for his portraiture work, primarily with bands, over the last thirty years.
One of four children, Corbijn was born in 1955 in The Netherlands and is the son of a parson and a nurse.
Corbijn began his career as a music photographer when he saw the Dutch musician Herman Brood playing in a café in Groningen around 1975.
From the late 1970’s, New Musical Express (NME), featured his work on a regular basis, often using one of his images on the front page, including a portrait of David Bowie wearing a loincloth backstage in New York when starring in The Elephant Man. Corbijn was also a regular contributor to The Face, a glossy monthly post-punk life style / music magazine and made his name photographing in black and white.
Tumblr media
David Bowie, The Elephant Man, 1980
Tumblr media
Morrissey, The Smiths, 1990
Corbijn’s work
Corbijn has photographed Bob Dylan, Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, Björk, Robert De Niro, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Morrissey, Simple Minds, Clint Eastwood, Annie Lennox, and the Eurythmics, amongst others.
Perhaps his most famous and longest standing association is with U2, which includes pictures of the band on their first US tour, taking pictures for their albums The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.
Some examples of Corbijn’s work
Tumblr media
Nick Cave – 1996
This image is a very stark, serious and moody black and white portrait of the Australian rock star, Nick Cave. The subject is reasonably formal with a shirt and smart coat on and he is standing in front of a wall that has leading lines taking your view back towards the subject’s eyes that are looking intently to the left of the frame.
Tumblr media
Keith Richards – 1980
The image is a candid, editorial portrait of Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones. The use of black and white adds to the drama and shows the subject exhaling smoke while looking directly at the viewer as if in defiance. The pose is natural, uncompromising and informal and the low-key lighting shows the deep lines and shadows on the subject’s face.
Tumblr media
U2 – Death Valley – 1987
This image is of the Irish rock band U2 and was used for their 1988 album, “The Joshua Tree” as the cover. The shot is very posed with three members of the band looking directly at the viewer while Bono, the lead singer, gazes to the left of the frame as if deep in thought. The composition of the image helps show the vastness of the landscape, occupying over half the frame, while the band occupy the remaining space on the left of the frame.
Tumblr media
Henry Rollins – 1994
This portrait shows American actor, musician, comedian and media host, Henry Rollins. The image is both dramatic and alarming as the subject appears to be screaming directly at the viewer. The low-key lighting adds to the drama and accentuates the lines in his face and tendons in his neck. It’s a serious shot and the viewer is left somewhat confused by the reason for the subject’s anger.
Tumblr media
Clint Eastwood – 1994
This image is of the American actor/director, Clint Eastwood. The use of black and white adds to the serious mood of this image and Eastwood’s finger pointing at the viewer is reminiscent of the publicity shot for his earlier movie, Magnum, where his finger is replaced by a gun.
Tumblr media
Tom Waits – 2004
This image is of American musician Tom Waits. Leading lines take our eye along the bright sunshine on the railway tracks and our eye is drawn to the bright light behind Wait’s head and the white light bouncing back from the drum he is sitting on. The use of high contrast black and white add to the timelessness feel of the image.
Tumblr media
Depeche Mode – 1993
This image of English synth/rock band, Depeche Mode shows the band is sombre mood. As with the earlier shot of U2, the lead singer looks away out of the left of the frame, following the rule of gaze while the remaining band members looking directly at the viewer. The background is reasonably non-descript and adds to the gritty black and white image.
Tumblr media
Jonny Cash – 1994
This shot is of the American musician Jonny Cash and is a good example of reportage/pseudo paparazzi as the subject is looking out the car window, apparently oblivious to the photographer.
Film and video direction
Corbijn began his music video directing career when early eighties German band Palais Schaumburg, asked him to direct their video. After seeing the resulting video, the band Propaganda hired Corbijn direct the video for their track “Dr. Mabuse”. Subsequently he directed videos for David Sylvian, Echo & the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, Roxette and U2. His first video in colour was made for U2 in 1984 for their single "Pride".
In 1994 Corbijn directed a short film about Captain Beefheart for the BBC called “Some Yoyo Stuff”. He made his feature film debut with “Control”, a film about the life of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. It premiered to critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2007. “Control” was the big winner of the Director's Fortnight winning the CICAE Art & Essai prize for best film and also won the Michael Powell award for best new British feature at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

After serving as director of photography on dozens of TV shows and several films in Australia and the US, John Brawley did not hesitate when he was offered the chance to make his TV directing debut.
Brawley called the shots on an episode of the second season of 20th Century Fox’s medical drama The Resident, which follows the daily professional and personal challenges faced by doctors at an Atlanta hospital.
“I had wondered  about directing but did not really pursue it until the producing-director Rob Corn, who started the careers of many directors on Grey’s Anatomy, tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘I think you should direct,’” Brawley tells IF.
“I wasn’t going to argue with him. It was a great opportunity. It was like exercising a muscle I had never exercised before. As a DP I try not to tune too much into the nuances of  performances, mostly because I don’t want to confuse the actors.
“I want them to only get that kind of feedback from the director. So I had to switch that part of my brain on and turn off the visual part a little bit.”
Starring Matt Czuchry, Bruce Greenwood, Manish Dayal, Emily VanCamp, Shaunette Renée Wilson and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, The Resident screens here on the Seven Network. Brawley’s ep entitled Queens will premiere on Seven next Tuesday night.
He has been the DP on the show from the first season. The second unit DP Hilda Mercado stepped up to take charge of the main unit on the segment he directed and on another on which he did the prep. Phillip Noyce is an executive producer.
Finding crew for the series last year in Atlanta was a challenge as there were no fewer than 92 shows in production in the city, attracted by Georgia’s tax credits of up to 30 per cent for features, TV series, animation, music videos commercials and games.
An AFTRS graduate, he worked on numerous series including The Warriors, Hiding, The Beautiful Lie, Puberty Blues, Offspring, Party Tricks and Lowdown and the movies 100 Bloody Acres and Lake Mungo.
He moved to the US in early 2017 to shoot the USA Network drama Queen of the South, which starred Alice Braga. As a dual US/Australian citizen he did not need a Green Card. He got the gig after meeting the series showrunner Natalie Chaidez when they worked on Hunters, the NBCUniversal-produced sci-fi drama for US cable network Syfy.
Although he’s been offered the chance to work on a couple of US shows shooting in Oz, he wants to focus on doing more US productions for the time being. He misses working with Aussies but is heartened to see directors such as Kate Dennis (a fellow Offspring alumni) and Daina Reid are plying their trade in the US.
Has his experience on The Resident whetted his appetite to direct again? “I am very happy being a cinematographer. It was nice to dip my toe into the water in a very safe way,” he says. “If there are other chances down the road I will certainly jump at them. Longer term, I see my future in producing.”

4K Ultra HD Review: Mad Max
Tumblr media
Much like actors are prone to typecasting, so too are filmmakers often pigeonholed in the genre in which they first find success. When doctor-turned-director George Miller made his propitious debut with 1979's Mad Max and followed it up with two sequels over the next six years, he seemed destined to continue to work in action. Instead, the Australian filmmaker explored comedy (The Witches of Eastwick), drama (Lorenzo's Oil), and family fare (Babe: Pig in the City, Happy Feet) before returning to his roots with Mad Max: Fury Road, earning six Academy Awards.
Miller's skill in the visual medium was apparent from the start with Mad Max. Rather than highlighting Australia's lush landscapes, he and director of photography David Eggby (Pitch Black, Scooby-Doo) show a desolate, muted Melbourne. While it's often overshadowed by the ostentatious, post-apocalyptic dystopia of its sequels, the original film depicts a near-future that takes place prior to - but on the cusp of - the complete collapse of society. Miller and co-writer James McCausland maintain a sliver of normalcy, but an energy crisis has triggered the beginning of the end.
Tumblr media
Mad Max wastes no time getting to the madness, opening with a reckless, high-speed chase in which the unruly gang wreaking havoc on the streets of Australia kills one of the few remaining members of the disheveled police force attempting to uphold the law. Leather-clad lawman Max Rockatansky (a young Mel Gibson) joins the hunt, and it becomes personal when the gang's ringleader, Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne, who also plays the villainous Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road), targets his wife (Joanne Samuel) and infant son. The rage-filled Max takes his supercharged car and seeks vengeance against the leader and his loyal acolytes.
Mad Max may be tame by today’s standards, particularly when compared to the insanity that would follow in the franchise, but consider the context upon its initial release. This low-budget, independent film from a first-time filmmaker with an inexperienced cast and crew in Australia unexpectedly delivered 93 minutes of the most death-defying stunts committed to celluloid at the time. The cast and crew threw caution to the wind, resulting in a palpable sense of danger, while dramatic elements accentuate the action.
Tumblr media
Mad Max drives onto 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. It has been restored in 4K from original elements with Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range, resulting in a sharp, vibrant picture that blows the previous Blu-ray releases from Scream Factory and MGM out of the water. Three audio options are available: the original mono Australian track, a 5.1 lossless Australian track (in which the many explosions and crashes sound massive), and the American dub. A slipcover with alternate artwork is included.
Both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs include a casual, enjoyable audio commentary by Eggby, art director Jon Dowding, and special effects artist Chris Murray, while the Blu-ray houses the rest of the special features. Most notably, Miller sits down for a new, 30-minute interview about the film and its legacy. It's filmed via video chat due to Covid-19, but it's great to have the director's input, as he was absent from previous editions. He discusses the movie's origins as a contemporary story, being smitten by Gibon's audition, the guerilla filmmaking tactics, and more.
Tumblr media
Scream Factory's 2015 interview featurette with Gibson (who looks back on the film with fondness and honesty), Samuel, and Eggby is ported over, as are two mini-documentaries produced by MGM in 2002: Mad Max: The Film Phenomenon, a 25-minute piece about the movie's impact, and Mel Gibson: Birth of a Superstar, a 16-minute featurette about Gibson’s rise to fame featuring Eggby, actors Piper Laurie (Carrie) and John Jarratt (Wolf Creek), and more. Other extras include a trailer commentary by writer Josh Olson (A History of Violence), two theatrical trailers, three TV spots, and three radio spots.
Mad Max is available now on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray via Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

"ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE" (1969) Review
Tumblr media
"ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE" (1969) Review At least ten years or more must have passed since I last saw the 1969 Bond movie, “ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE (OHMSS)”. EON Production’s sixth entry in the Bond franchise has the distinction of being the only movie that starred Australian male model-turned-actor, George Lazenby. It was the first EON movie that did not star Sean Connery – already fixed in the public’s mind as the only actor who can portray James Bond. And it was the only movie that was directed by former film editor, Peter Hunt.
I first became aware of “OHMSS” back in the mid-1980s. I had seen it on television once, when I was a child. But ABC Television’s botched editing had turned me off from the movie. I eventually became a fan during repeated viewings of the movie during the mid and late 1980s. By the beginning of the 1990s, “OHMSS” had been fixed as my favorite Bond movie. For years, it remained in this position, despite repeating viewings of other Bond movies, the release of the Brosnan films and my own mysterious reluctance to watch “OHMSS”. It seemed as if I was afraid to watch it again, fearful that my earlier adulation of the film might prove to be misguided. And then EON Productions released “CASINO ROYALE” in the theaters back in 2006. "CASINO ROYALE" had impressed me so much that my doubts about “OHMSS” increased even further. After seeing “CASINO ROYALE” for the third time and 2008's "QUANTUM OF SOLACE", I finally decided to watch “OHMSS” for the first time in years. In the end, my fears seemed groundless. My latest viewing of “OHMSS” proved that I had every right to view it as one of my all time favorite Bond movies. After 41 years, the movie still holds up as one of the finest Bond movies in the entire franchise, if not the finest. And it also one of the few Bond films to closely follow its source, namely the 1963 novel penned by Ian Fleming. What makes the latter remarkable is that the previous Bond entry, “YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE” barely resembled its literary source, aside from a few characters and the setting. “OHMSS” picks up with Bond searching for Blofeld, now wanted by various governments for his past forays into international terrorism and extortion. His search leads to meeting the most important woman in his life other than Vesper Lynd – Teresa (Tracy) Draco di Vicenzo. Not only will his meeting with Tracy lead to a serious change in his private life, it will also affect his professional life, thanks to Tracy’s father, Marc-Ange Draco when he provides Bond with information leading to Blofeld. Of course, Draco was only willing to provide this information, if Bond courts his daughter. In the end, Bond not only tracks down Blofeld, but destroy the latter’s latest attempt to extort the United Nations. But as many know, Bond’s latest professional conflict will result in tragedy for his private life. I only have a few problems with “OHMSS”. One of them was the director Peter Hunt’s decision to have actor George Baker (portraying the real Sir Hilary Bray), dub Lazenby’s voice, while Bond is impersonating Sir Hilary at Piz Gloria. Why they had decided to do this confounds me. It seemed very unnecessary, unless the director was aiming for Sir Hilary to sound like a cliché of a British scholar. Another problem I had were some of the jokes that came out of Bond’s mouth. I consider this problem minor, since “OHMSS” – like many other Bond movies had its share of good and bad jokes. One particularly good joke was the St. Bernard who came to Bond’s “rescue” after the latter had survived his bobsled fight against Blofeld. And last, but not least, there were a few moments when the editing seemed a bit . . . questionable. A good example would be the scene that featured Bond’s first meeting with Draco. There is a moment when it seemed that Bond had asked Draco for Blofeld’s whereabouts. It seemed as if Lazenby had spoken too soon, cutting off actor Gabriele Ferzetti’s lines too soon. Another viewing seemed to reveal that poor editing might have been at fault and not Lazenby’s acting. And another review seemed to agree with my findings. Aside from the previously mentioned quibbles, I had no problems with “OHMSS”. In fact there is so much to enjoy about this movie – including the main star, George Lazenby. Many critics and fans either tend to dismiss his performance as wooden or give him minor credit for his valiant attempt at a decent performance. Frankly, I think that he was a lot better than many give him credit for. I must admit that he has a rather odd voice (which I suspect has been influenced by his Australian accent), but so did most of the other Bonds – including Connery’s tendency to indulge in pre-adolescent diction, Moore’s drawl, Dalton’s Welsh accent and Brosnan’s . . . well, I cannot really describe Brosnan’s voice. I just find it odd. But despite Lazenby’s odd voice, his acting comes off very natural and he seems to project Bond’s emotions with an ease that should not have come easy to him. But he does. And instead of portraying Bond as some kind of action/sexual icon, he portrays the character as very human. This is very obvious in the following scenes: -Bond’s growing impatience with Tracy’s antics -Bond’s surprise that M had given him leave instead of accepting his resignation -Bond’s breakthrough with Tracy -the Piz Gloria dinner sequence -Bond’s fear of capture during his escape from Piz Gloria -Bond’s proposal of marriage to Tracy -Bond’s quarrel with M over Tracy and Blofeld -Tracy’s death
Tumblr media
Personally, I thought that Lazenby really shined in the marriage proposal scene, those scenes that featured Bond’s quarrels with M and the Piz Gloria dinner sequence. Despite having his voice dubbed by George Baker in the latter, Lazenby managed to express Bond’s emotions during that scene effortlessly without having to say a word. The movie also benefited from the presence of Diana Rigg, who had recently left “THE AVENGERS” to begin a movie career. What can one say about the great Diana? Not only did she effortlessly combine all the complex personality traits of Tracy di Vicenzo – witty, emotional, sad, brave, determined, etc. Is it any wonder that Tracy is viewed by many actresses as the ultimate Bond woman? Even better, both Rigg and Lazenby managed to create great chemistry together as the romantically doomed pair. Not only did “OHMSS” benefited from both Lazenby and Rigg’s performances, the pair was ably supported by a fine cast that included the warm and charismatic Gabriele Ferzetti as Tracy’s father, the talented Ilse Steppat who portrayed the intimidating Irma Bunt shortly before her death (she never lived to experience the movie’s release), the always dependable Bernard Lee as M – giving one of his better performances, and the charming and fun Angela Scoular as Blofeld’s English patient, Ruby. Of course one cannot forget the legendary Telly Savalas, who became the second actor to portray Ernst Blofeld on-screen. And as far as I’m concerned, he was the best. He was not impeded by Donald Pleasance’s ridiculous scar and questionable accent or Charles Gray’s foppish portrayal. Instead, he radiated intelligence and menace, making him the only Blofeld (in my opinion) worthy of being Bond’s nemesis. I also have to commend Peter Hunt’s direction. “OHMSS” was his first time at bat as a director. Any other inexperienced director could have turned one of Ian Fleming’s best novels into a hash job. Fortunately, Hunt proved to be a talented director and did justice to the novel – although I did have a problem with the editing of a few of his scenes. Hunt was not only ably supported by a fine cast, but by screenwriter Richard Maibaum, editor and future director John Glen, and John Barry’s marvelous score and Hal David’s haunting lyrics to the song, “We Have All the Time In the World”. Cinematographer Michael Reed superbly recaptured the majesty of the Swiss Alps and the exotic elegance of Portugal with his photography. And one cannot forget skier Willy Bogner Jr. and Alex Barbey for creating the first and probably best ski chase in the Bond franchise. I could probably go on about how much I love “OHMSS”, but I do not want to sound repetitive. What can I say? After 39 years, I consider to still be one of the best Bond movies in the franchise . . . and definitely one of my favorites. And I am happy to see that “OHMSS” is finally being recognized by many as the fine film it is. If you have not seen this film, I suggest that you rent or buy it as soon as possible. Or else you might miss something special.

Russell Boyd’s Contributions to the Work of Peter Weir by Thomas Davant
In their first meeting, Billy Kwan, the avid record-keeper and introspective cameraman strikes a deal with Guy Hamilton, a journalist freshly arrived from the continent and adjusting to the boiling politics, poverty and rage steaming from Jakarta. The Australian is looking for the hard-hitting story to deliver to the folks back home. The road to that goal, however, is paved with red tape and competition. Kwan has the means, though. If the newcomer allows the native to shoot the story, they would make the perfect team. He reiterates: “You for the words, me for the pictures. I can be your eyes.” This small moment from THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY (’82) seems to speak to the relationship between director Peter Weir and cinematographer Russell Boyd. Together they brought Australian cinema to the forefront. That continent resting vast and sturdy on the bottom of the map was a land of staggering beauty and inexplicable mystery, from the deep forests of the north, along the mountainous coasts to the red desert of its heart. There was a vibration humming over the land. Together Boyd and Weir tapped into the pulse.
Boyd’s early life was spent outdoors in Victoria. Nestled in the southern corner of the continent, the region is a wild mix of grasslands, lush forest and snow-capped mountains. Looking for a job in news, he tackled the big city beat of Melbourne. He began shooting footage but was quickly turned off filming the aftermath of tragedy. After a few years turning out documentaries in Sydney, he helmed his first feature as DP in 1975. The up and coming Peter Weir was captivated by the cinematographer’s use of natural light and realized it would be the perfect fit for his next film.
Tumblr media
Their first collaboration was the glorious, haunting and wildly influential PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (’75). The opening shot—the titular land formation rising alien and ominous out of the fog—forever sealed the texture and mystery of Australia onto celluloid. What was to unfold in its running time was a painting come to life. It always strikes a chord of joy into my heart when filmmakers find inspiration in art. Boyd was particularly influenced by the Heidelberg School, a group of Australian impressionists working in the late 1800s whose work attempted to catch the essence and power of light on the vast stretches of their continent’s landscape.
With a palette awash in Martian reds, khaki browns and the occasional blue ribbon or pink bouquet, the cinematography services an intoxicating adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s novel. The disappearance sequence alone is worth a revisit: as the girls climb into the rock then point of view shots are interspersed with long shots of the land formation. The shots grow tighter as the girls wander through the sandy arteries between rocks. With the ancient hum of Gheorghe Zamfir’s pan flute and electronic vibrations, the blend of image and sound drifts into science fiction. The girls are lured in, lulled and swallowed whole. In a recent interview about Boyd for the ASC, Weir explained: “The movie required more than just beautiful photography. There needed to be a power behind the images. We needed to put a spell on the audience.”
Tumblr media
The same effect was achieved in their second endeavor, the mysterious and mesmerizing crime drama THE LAST WAVE (’77). Shots of rain pelting the red sands of the desert on a sunny day as school children run in a shock of confusion and joy carries you back to those summer afternoons when nature contradicted Herself and your reaction was one of slight hysteria in the face of a natural phenomenon. Another sequence of water filling every inch of a car will send your heart racing. Boyd glides between the afternoon and darkness, once again relying on as much natural light as possible. The results are images with a weight and texture. The film unfolds in a twist of shadows and shades of an impending apocalypse. The British set up Australia as a penal colony, but before that, the land belonged to the Aborigines (Weir’s use of aboriginal actors in this film was unprecedented). Boyd’s photography seems to draw from some mysterious spirit lingering beneath the city and emanating from the land itself.
Tumblr media
THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY brought Sigourney Weaver, Mel Gibson and the unrecognizable Linda Hunt before Boyd’s camera. Set in Indonesia on the cusp of political turmoil, the film plays like a shade of Graham Greene. Boyd’s photography is once again beautifully suited for the natural landscape: lush greens of the jungle, sweat beading on skin and the gradual accumulation of shadow create an atmosphere of danger, intrigue and sex. The sun filters through the bamboo in a green shimmer. There’s a way that beautiful cinematography takes you into the world of a film and makes you shiver with the echoes of sensation: you see the glass of beer dripping with condensation, you feel it in your hand and taste it upon your lips; you see the rain and feel the frustration of drenched clothes clinging to your skin before you give in and toss your hands out in acceptance. Maybe it’s the power of celluloid…
At the risk of appearing elitist, I make the statement that the average conversation about movies revolves around the following: who’s in it, what’s it about, who directed it? I would argue that the average film-goer knows the difference between a beautifully composed image and one that’s unexceptional. But for those of us who delve a little deeper into film-going, certain names carry a mystical, awe-inspiring weight. Storaro, Zsigmond, Nykvist, Almendros, Deakins…masters of light and glass, whose eyes and fingerprints elevate a film from mere moving image to the majestic heights of experience.
The American Society of Cinematographers honored Boyd with the International Award in February. Now is as good a time as ever to revisit the work of a master.
