Traditionally we are used to seeing buildings designed in 2D but with the introduction of BIM (Building Information Modelling) in the early 2000’s, 2D drawings have taken a backseat over the preferred 3D modelling of BIM. On screen you can still draw the wall in 2D but with the click of a button the 3D version is shown. Revit is far more intuitive than any 2D software that has been available for the Architectural industry to date. Elevations are also easily set up and viewed by double clicking on the elevation marker in plan view. This will take you directly to the elevation view without you having to draw it separately.

As a designer you are trained to see 2D objects in their 3D form but, think of your client who wants to see an end result and isn’t concerned with a series of single lines, arcs and text. In the past we spent endless hours collaborating with artists or investing time and money learning new computer software to produce an artist’s impression or artistic visualisation of a proposed building. By designing in Revit, you can produce a realistic rendered image in just a few clicks and furthermore by using cloud-based rendering you can produce realistic rendered stereo panoramas (click on the rendered image below for link to stereo panorama) which can be rotated and viewed using your computer screen or VR goggles.

Revit operability is dependent on using families. If you are an AutoCAD user, you will know what a block is; put simply families are Revit’s version of blocks. It is in their interest to be able to provide models of their products so they can be shown in 3D models. Many manufacturers already have comprehensive model libraries already available for download.

The main focus industries are Architects, structural engineers, mechanical & electrical engineers, contractors and designers. There is a full tab on the user interface dedicated to collaboration. From the collaborate tool which allows multiple team members to work on a project simultaneously to the copy/monitor tool which allows monitoring of any linked file so that if one team alters or changes their design, any other team with the file linked will be notified so they can change their design accordingly. There is also a very handy interference check which identifies invalid intersections between elements of different types whether within a project or between the host model and linked files. For example, a pipe running straight through a structural beam or a wall, without an opening, will be highlighted.

Finally, no drawing can be issued without a title block. All firms have their own title blocks which can easily been drawn up in Revit and placed in your template library for use in every project. Populating a sheet is as easy as drag and drop. Scales can be changed to suit and many different scales can be used on each sheet. Schedules can also be dropped on to a sheet and adjusted to fit.

Designed by Shay Cleary Architects, Blackpitts Student Accommodation / The Tannery is a complex urban student housing scheme, located in the Liberties area of Dublin 8 which is currently undergoing extensive urban regeneration. The site is bounded to the east by Blackpitts, to the north by a new pedestrian street which it shares with a new hotel and to the west by the boundary wall to the adjoining Warrenmount Convent.

The scheme provides 296 student rooms and associated communal facilities in a U-shaped perimeter arrangement enclosing a west facing quadrangle courtyard. The building ranges in scale from seven to four floors with six lift & stair cores serving forty-eight apartments each with communal living/dining spaces.

The cluster apartments range in size from three to eight bedrooms, with each bedroom provided with a study desk, ensuite toilet and shower pod. A two-storey gymnasium building adjacent to the boundary wall forms the western enclosure to the courtyard.

Through high quality architectural design, the building is visually and materially anchored in its context in this particular part of Dublin. One of the primary design features of the student housing is the incorporation of the generous communal courtyard which includes a specialist landscape design with trees, furniture and high-quality materials. The building is clad in Jura Beige limestone which provides an attractive and durable finish and helps to reflects light into the courtyard. Careful consideration is given to the durability and life spans of all specified products and materials.

The project is a BIM Level 2 project using Autodesk BIM 360 and Field tools to streamline communication of data and drawings and has been recognised as an Innovation in Construction Award Winner in 2018. The project transformed a brown field site to a green field footprint by creating large expanses of green using all sedum roofs, 85% green area ground landscaping, as well as ground water and rainwater harvesting tanks that can be used for maintenance of the green areas.

The overall design for the building placed great emphasis on the creation of good public spaces and orientation for natural light throughout the day – with effective design and construction, the building’s outcome went beyond the client’s brief.

The project was the recipient of the Student Accommodation Project of the Year Award at the 2019 Irish Building and Design Awards. Following this recent success, the project is shortlisted for an award at the upcoming 2020 Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Awards. Nominated in the category “Commercial Over €10m” in competition with 3 other major projects across the country, the shortlisting is a recognition of the architectural design quality of the scheme, the high standard of construction execution by BAM Ireland and the innovative nature of the BIM-enabled design and construction management which was employed across the project.

Job Description: The desired candidate has to work in tandem with drafting team and employ Autodesk software programs like AutoCad, AutoCad Plant 3D, Revit & Navisworks amongst others.

The candidate should take the responsibility to generate BIM Models & project drawings from Design through to As-Built phase by performing in cooperation with & under the guidance of the concerned engineers. The models & drawings will involve disciplines ranging from Mechanical & Civil to Electrical & Instrumentation works.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

The desired candidate should contain the following qualifications :-
