She whirled away and ran. She knew that the elevator wouldn’t come fast enough so she bolted for the stairs. Her room is in the eighth floor but she didn’t care, she needed her roommates, the safety of her bed. She sprinted up the flights of stairs, her feet pounding with the beat of her heart. At the seventh floor, she stopped to compose herself, vaguely noticing the taste of blood lingering in her mouth. Panting for breath, Agueda’s mind is racing for she still couldn’t fathom what just happened. How could something like this happen to her? She never thought herself weak, but at that moment she felt like a fragile glass ready to break. Her heart unceasingly hammers in her chest and the stinging at the back of her eyes intensified. Her breath pick-ups, her vision starting to blur. No, she wouldn’t let this get to her, not in this dingy stairwell.
In an effort to calm herself, Agueda started walking up the last flight of stairs in a pretense of composure. Heaving a deep breath to dispel the remaining tension in her body, she opened the room she shares with Joyce and Donna1 hoping they are already asleep. Assured that they are, she silently creeped to her bed to finally let this horrible nightmare end.
*
Walking in the dark with her phone’s flashlight2 as her only illumination, she sleepily approached the vending machine3 in the common room4. The reflection of her white camisole and pajama shorts on the glass of the machine is stark against the darkness of the room, reminding her of the horror movies5 she’s fond of watching. For a second, she considered going back to bed and wait for breakfast to assuage her hunger. She scoffed, thinking herself silly for entertaining such thoughts. Ghosts and monsters only exist in movies.6
She was fumbling with her coin purse when an arm suddenly wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her against a hard chest. She leaned back against the chest, finding comfort in its warmth in contrast with the chilly air blowing from the aircon vents. She looked up to see who it was through the reflection on the surface of the vending machine. Startled to see the malicious eyes of the devil staring back at her, Agueda screamed.
*
“Agueda. Agueda wake up!”, a voice insisted.
Gasping for air, Agueda sat up and frantically looked around the room. She was relieved to see the worried faces of her roommates crowding her bed. Her face is drenched in sweat, her clammy hands shaking in the lingering fear from the nightmare
“Are you okay? We woke up when we heard you screaming.”, said Joyce. “We thought someone came to murder you or something”, added Donna.
“Oh, uh, no, just a nightmare. That exorcist movie we watched last night came back to haunt my dreams. I’m good.”, Agueda lied.
“I didn’t take you for a scaredy-cat. I thought you love horrors!”, said Donna.
“I’m not! It’s not like I can control my dreams, you know. Imagine if the devil takes you, let’s see how brave you can be.”, replied Agueda.
“Ok, ok, you two cut it out. You sure you’re fine, Agueda?”, asked Joyce.
“Yeah, don’t worry, I pretty much forgot all about it anyway.”, Agueda answered flippantly.
“Alright! It’s 6 am and I can’t go back to sleep, wanna eat instead?”, Donna said.
Agueda distractedly wiped the sweat on her forehead, trying in vain not to let the awful memories from last night to surface. She didn’t even realize she fell asleep in the midst of the turmoil she was in when she got to bed. Should she tell Donna and Joyce?
“Nah, you guys go ahead. I need to shower and prepare for my 7 am class. We have a long test, so I can’t be late.”
“Oh, we’ll bring you yogurt and some granola bars when we finish, then. Taking a test with an empty stomach is never a good idea.”, Joyce said.
When Joyce and Donna finally left the room, Agueda collapsed in her bed with a thud. In the morning light, the incident last night does seem like a nightmare, distant from reality. Badoy, the son of their landlady, is a few years older and has always been a likeable guy. The few encounters they had in school and the common room of their dorms7 had been amicable and sometimes even exciting. Her friends usually tease her of having a crush on him because he is quite charming.
Looking back, she did notice the scent of beer in his breath when she faced him. He was uncharacteristically touchy and, though she didn’t want to admit it, she relished his actions. It wasn’t until his hands started to wander toward places she wasn’t ready for did she start to feel uncomfortable and tried to get away. But he wouldn’t let go and attempted to kiss her. He... he tried to force himself on Agueda.
Agueda heard someone sobbing, not realizing that it was her. Everything –-shock, terror, betrayal and hurt-– came back in a tidal wave of emotions, crushing her with the pressure of it all. But what could she do? No one will believe her, anyway. Everyone she knows likes Badoy and he is the building owner’s son. It would be his word against hers. Besides, her roommates might think her weak for letting herself be vulnerable to such advances. Maybe... maybe it’s better to let it pass. Nothing good will come out of telling anyway, she’ll just cause undue chaos. Agueda cried harder, a feeling of numbness slowly creeping into her heart for what she’s about to do --- what she’s decided not to do for herself.
1 Joyce and Donna – these names are popular during the 40’s when this short story was published. They are still common girls names in the 21st century.
2 Phone Flashlight – modern counterpart of the candle used by Agueda in the original story. This is used more often now in replacement of candles.
3 Vending machine
4 Common room – this is the counterpart of a sala in a dorm
5 Reference to a form of popular culture in the 21st century.
6 In the 21st century, people are more skeptical when it comes to paranormal/ supernatural aspects of the world.
7 Residential quarters for a large number of people usually in an academy or university for students. This is the best modern representation of Badoy’s house where Agueda and the other girls live in because dormitories usually houses single sex or sometimes co-ed clientele.
